She leans her chin on one hand.

"That is a way of putting it."

"Yeah, but is it an accurate way," Mab says, not really expecting much of an answer. They open their mouth, then stop. "I... have completely forgotten what we came here for. In my defense, it was really good food."

"There's nothing to remember. I simply wanted the chance to speak with you."

"Yeah, but presumably there was a reason to do that here, instead of-" They don't have a good name for it; instead they wave in the direction of the tower they came from and ad lib, "-back there. Not that I don't appreciate it!"

"I didn't want to block the stairwell."

"You can all fly," Mab points out dryly and with humor. "What's special about this place, though? And where did this food come from?"

"I live here, and now you're closer if I want to show you off."

Mab can't deny the little thrill at "show you off," but they also have a lot of practice not letting it show too much. "Show me off to who? ...whom? ...wh- whatever, you know what I mean."

"The other bonded, Aiden. I think he'd like you, though he's quite busy at the moment."

Mab thinks back to what they'd gotten out of Reverb, information-wise. "Bonded...? Is he mortal?"

"He used to be."

Mab picks their words carefully. "What exactly does... bonding involve? Should I talk to Aiden?"

"I plan to introduce you, though he is no more an expert than I."

"Okay, but you're pretty clearly leading up to telling me who the expert is, so...?"

She laughs.

"It is not a subject that requires expertise. Aiden and I are both the Bonded of our lord."

"Okay, but, so, what does that actually involve?"

"An oath, one you can not swear without true intent, and the power of a fay lord."

"That's not an answer," Mab points out. "What's the oath? What happens after that? What are you working so hard to avoid telling me?"

"Only my lord can make the offer and I should not make it in her place."

Mab pauses. "That's fair," they say, and force themselves to calm the fuck down. "Sorry, I'm - I can get a little too curious sometimes."

"Curiosity has its advantages, but also its dangers and I suspect the dangers are greater here then they are in your world."

"Yeah, I'm... kinda getting that sense." They glance around, grasping at conversational straws. "Who are you showing me off to?"

"Aiden first. I think he misses other humans sometimes."

"There's, uh. Definitely a bit of a cultural gap, yeah," Mab agrees. Included in that gap is the very deep part of Mab that they keep silenced almost always, the part that wants to be owned and kept and cared for, that wants to worship in ways a church would not approve of, and the fact that that seems to be more acceptable, here. Not as frowned upon as they're used to. It makes them want it, badly, the way the scent of cooking meat makes them salivate. "Lead the way?"

"As I said, he's occupied at the moment and he sometimes minds an audience."

She tilts her head and looks at Mab.

"But not always. Would you like that? Watching?"
