The moon is out. Have sweet dreams.
Dreamshaper!Felix drops on Beacon Hills
Permalink Mark Unread

In a moment Felix was simply enjoying flying through the many portals of the Shattered Skies. Then a flash of bright light and then he isn't in the Shattered Skies anymore.

Instead he is above a town, no portal in view. He checks his cellphone and... no signal, this is likely a kind of pocket dimension.

Feeling confused and lost, Felix flies down, searching for people or a place where he can use a phone.

Permalink Mark Unread

And while Felix is going through that, a tiny shard of gray quartz crystal manifests above the forehead of a sleeping teenager, making contact.

Permalink Mark Unread

The sleeping teenager wakes- but not in his house.

Elsewhere:

This town is fairly quiet, but there is a powerful force nearby. It's coming from the forest.

Felix can sense it, in the way that he might sense the hot breath of a predator on his neck, or hear the shrieks of monkeys with a new target to play with.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, god. It's one of those pocket dimensions. The creepy ones. Well, caution. Felix will not be a horror movie protagonist and go check the weird forest thing. He will go around town...

...a town that looks fairly modern, maybe this a new pocket dimension? Or one recently created by the dreamshard and that they missed? Well, Felix will just investigate further... maybe talk with one of the locals if they look approachable enough. If everything else fails he will just fly towards the dimension's edge and contact Fenris.

Permalink Mark Unread

The locals are probably quite friendly.

The tree is screaming now.

The locals don't seem to notice.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay... Well, Felix is worried now. He will try something that is probably not stupid for a immortal.

Felix lands and searches for a local to talk to. Ready to take flight.

Permalink Mark Unread

No locals seem to be paying attention to him.

The locals do pay attention to the growing winds, which blow harder as the scream gets louder.

Many run inside homes and stores to avoid the storm.

The wind howls, and it starts to rain.

And the rain begins to follow a path through the town, carried by the wind.

Felix feels a gust of air behind him, urging him to follow.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, so weird weather, meet this skymage. What happens when Felix tries to counter the wind and rain?

Permalink Mark Unread

The rain fades away. The wind calms.

Yet a swirl of water and wind remains, despite the clearing sky, marking out a clear direction.

It leads further into town, towards the residential area.

Permalink Mark Unread

What if Felix tries to focus on the water? What if he heats up the air where the water concentrates?

Permalink Mark Unread

The water evaporates instantly.

The wind stops.

Nothing interesting going on here, really.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay... Felix will pay attention to the wind in case something weird happens again.

It looked like it was moving with purpose. Can Felix identify a likely destination?

Permalink Mark Unread

It could be this house. Something in the house is like the tree.

The boy on the couch, maybe.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay... Felix knocks on the door.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Who could that be? Scott, did Isaac say how long he would be out?"

The sound of footsteps.

The door opens.

"Hi. Are you one of Scott's friends?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. I know this will sound weird, but there might be some kind of magical emergency. There was this weird weather thing coming straight to your home until I dissipated it."

As he says this, Felix absently stretches his wings, they sure look real.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Look, I don't know what religion you're selling, but we're fresh out of faith. Come again later."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...What? I am not a Mormon or anything. I was flying, notice some weird scream coming from the forest, then there was some weird obviously magical weather coming to this direction and I stopped it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh huh. Let's see this 'magic' of yours."

Permalink Mark Unread

Does she think I am a random person with wings instead of a Skymage?

"...Okay," Felix says taking a step back.

He decides against demonstrating fire, instead he makes a whirlwind in the frontyard, helped by some fog to make it more visible.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Real wings, real magic. Why do you think the magical emergency is in my house?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"As I said, there was some weird screaming from the forest, and weird magical weather coming at this direction. Maybe it wasn't coming towards your house, but it was obviously in the way, and warning you felt like the good Samaritan thing to do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You wait here. I'll be back with my son."

She closes the door.

A few minutes pass, and it opens again.

"Everything seems fine, he's just sleeping. Whatever magic storm you're worried about probably passed over us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay... Do you mind if I use your phone? Or at least could you tell me where I am? I got lost."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, come in."

Felix can see a boy sleeping on the couch, and he can see a crystal lying on the floor next to it.

"Here's our phone. Try not to make any international calls."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix picks up the phone and starts dialing.

"I am not entirely sure how I got here but..." Felix starts saying when he spots the crystal.

He dashes forward and grabs it like someone's life depends on it.

Then he takes a closer look.

Then he glances at the boy.

Then he glances back at the Crystal.

"Fuck."

He tries waking up the boy.

Permalink Mark Unread

The boy is already awake, and he's very busy. He wants to be left to his work.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What is it? Is something wrong?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix looks at her nervously. "Your son isn't waking up and... huh, pretty sure this thing is the reason," he shows her the gray quartz shard.

Ouch, Felix feels a pang in his chest, but... let's ignore it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is there something you can do? Does this have to do with the magic weather?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, yes. But it would be so awkward to explain.

"Maybe, I still should make that call if you don't mind," Felix says picking up the phone anyway.

He dials Fenris' number... "Fenris? Huh, no? Sorry," He tries again, "...ah, sorry again."

Then he turns back to the woman, "Silly question, but am I still in Florida?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Still? My house has been in California for a while now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Urgh, I will deal with that later," Felix tries another number.

Then he feels a strong pang of pain and flinches and almost falls to his knees.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you alright? Do you need anything?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. I honestly don't know what just happened..."

Oh, here is the pain again. And again. non-stop.

Felix does falls on his knees now. And starts coughing up blood.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you need medical attention? Has anything like this happened before?"

Melissa gets out a first-aid kit, ready to apply whatever needs applying.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix is too busy to answer because he is coughing up blood, and just now he coughed up a pebble.

The blood covered pebble doesn't hit the floor, it instead floats up to Felix's eye-level. He still too busy still coughing up blood.

Permalink Mark Unread

Melissa doesn't look at the floating pebble any more than she has to.

She helps Felix re-adjust his body so he won't swallow the blood and choke.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix stares at, his face shows absolute confusion.

Because that wasn't supposed to happen, the only way it was supposed to happen is if his connection with the... original one was broken. But he is in Florida... Fenris was certain that thing could surpass the speed of light and the barriers between pocket dimensions and the larger universe...

...there was one situation, which Fenris hypothesized that could make the connection break, but maybe it is some weird magic, there is obviously some weird magic at play here.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, just sit down, stay calm. Does this have something to do with that crystal? Do you want me to get it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I... my brother..." Felix coughs some more blood, "I need to contact him, but all the numbers aren't working."

Permalink Mark Unread

Melissa tries to wake Scott again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix cries a little... he can't be... that can't be...

...right, there is a poor mother concerned with her kid right in front of you, Felix, go help.

"I will, I have a weird request. I need a place to sleep," pause, "I mean, what I am going to do to help your son needs me to sleep briefly, at least for thirty minutes I think..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Take his bed."

She holds him as she half-leads, half-carries him to Scott's room upstairs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix is half-led, half-carried to the bed. He rests his bed and tries his sleeping exercises...

He feels with his dimension and he can tell there is one pocket dimension in the area, no others... that is not unusual, so Felix doesn't despairs, instead he builds his own pocket dimension and creates a couple of portals.

...after what must have been at least less than half an hour, Felix wakes up.

Permalink Mark Unread

Melissa brought food!

It's pizza, apparently recently delivered.

"You hungry? Scott's clearly not having any."

Permalink Mark Unread

Man, this woman is chill about things or what?

"Huh, no. Thank you. But I need to do something else to help your son waking up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is it more magic? Just what we need. Okay, what can I do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Feix walks downstairs, followed by the floating pebble, which looks larger than she might have remembered.

"Yes... too complicated to explain. For now, you should do is look after your son. I am not entirely sure how long this will take."

Assuming she doesn't ask more questions gets out of the house and takes flight to go through a portal to his dimension and then, after parking his floating pebble, to go her son's dimension.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not many questions.

"Do you need some food? Magic is hungry work. It is right? Seems like it should be."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, it is very considerate of you, but I need to go help your son first."

Plus Felix could make an entire mountain of pizza if he felt like it.

Up, up and away.

Felix created one portal high up in the sky, so no one would stumble upon it. This portal, like all portals, only opens or closes under certain circumstances, called Keys. To open it, Felix simple creates a small flame and moves it downward. The translucid portal appears mid air and Felix goes into it. Then Felix closes it, by making another small flame and moving it upward.

He created a small house in this dimensional space. Felix's pebble is parked in the backyard. It will eventually grow and get bigger than the house.

Now, Felix moves towards the second portal, this one connects to the young boy's dimension and was created pretty close to it's center.

Felix opens it (fire moving in a spiral) and walks through it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix finds himself standing under a tree.

It seems familiar, though this version is a pale imitation of the one that called to him earlier.

To one side lies a town, the same one he just walked through.

To the other side lies a forest.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ok, Felix gets away from the creepy tree and circles around in a spiral, searching for the teenager.

Permalink Mark Unread

There are lots of people in the woods.

Very few in the town.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix lands and talks with the first person he sees. "Hello, what is your name?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aaa! Why do you have wings? What's going on?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix blinks.

"Kato?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What the hell is a 'Kato'."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry, you reminded me of someone I knew. Anyway, are you in danger?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, everything's fine. What are you doing here? We don't get new people around here a lot."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I need to rescue someone, a specific person," Felix gives him a description that might be quite familiar.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, you can't go just like that! Don't you want to like, seduce me with your wiles so I'll tell you everything you need to know? I'm sure you can be very wily."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh... I am certain you are very... nice, but you look too much like somebody I used to know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I could just pretend to be him, that could be fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

By all the worlds, let this not be a dimension of nymphomaniacs. Specially, Kato-shaped nymphomaniacs.

"No," Felix says firmly, "do you have a place to stay? And do you know where the person I am looking for is?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Scott probably doesn't want to be bothered by random angels, he has people to take care of. He'll be in the woods somewhere."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, Scott. Thanks for the name. Do you want to come? I would rather not leave you alone in the woods at night."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's okay, I'm pretty sure I'm not real! Good luck."

He walks away, hands in his pockets, whistling.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, this was weird, even for the standards of newly created dimensions... Felix decides he needs to find Scott first, so he takes flight and continues his search.

Permalink Mark Unread

The boy defending some young children from a snarling wolf might be Scott.

It probably is.

Felix can always ask.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix will ask! First that wolf can be scared off by a small of fire between it and the group.

"Scott?" Felix says after landing near them.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's me. Who are you? Where did you come from?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Felix. Felix Dalkaila," He looks around for more signs of danger, "are you and everyone with you alright?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They're safe now, thanks to you."

Scott takes the hands of the girls and walks with them through the woods, helping them through tough areas.

"What do you want with me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Some heroic fantasy dream?

"I need you to come with me..." Felix says. "Do you mind if we talk privately for a moment?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They need my help. I can't slow down."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I want to help them, but I would rather they didn't listen to what I have to say, at least not now. But I need to tell it to you if anyone here is going to be safe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Help me get them to the lodge, then we can talk."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright," Felix says, he can't do much without cooperation, "so, what is going on here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There are a lot of dangerous things in the woods. Werewolves, lupines, draugr...it's not safe."

Scott walks further into the trees, and it gets darker as the sunlight is obscured by leaves.

Permalink Mark Unread

Urgh, not a monster-creating dimension.

"What are those? Are we far away from the lodge?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks at the girls, who are playing with each other slightly ahead.

Then he turns to Felix.

"This is what werewolves look like."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, okay. Are you one or some other kind of creature?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm a werewolf. Lupines are those things you chased off earlier. They're predators. Not very malicious, but if they see a weak target... and there are draugr, the undead. There are other, rarer things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I didn't see any of those up in the sky. And even if they do show up, which should be unlikely, I can just scare them off."

Please, believe this. Felix isn't sure if your belief will make things easier, but let's hope it does.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. We can talk more when we get there."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix follows. He observes the children Scott is protecting, just in case they are disguised monsters or act... off, sometimes dimensions produce weird things like people-looking facsimiles.

Permalink Mark Unread

They mostly seem to be scared little girls, though their expressions aren't quite right.

Probably not real, but also probably harmless.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, Felix will guide them through the forest for now. How far until the lodge?

Permalink Mark Unread

Nearly there now. There's some blood on the ground but Scott doesn't seem surprised.

The girls look scared, but holding his hands seems to stabilize them.

Permalink Mark Unread

...

Okay, scared girls, will you be less scared if Felix holds your hands? He doesn't need them to fight.

(Also: aww, Scott. This would be kinda of adorable if it was just a dream.)

Permalink Mark Unread

They go inside.

The lodge is a bit messy, and the wood has begun to rot, but they clearly are doing their best to keep things sterile.

There are lots of people on beds.

There are more people injured and dying than there are places to put them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Scott hands the girls off to someone else and turns to Felix.

"We should step outside."

Permalink Mark Unread

...

Shit.

He pulls Scott into a corner. "Please, listen to me for just a moment."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fine. Talk."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix says quietly, but quickly. "Okay. There is a weird magic going on. This isn't your regular town, but a pocket dimension and this isn't your real body. The real body is asleep in your house right now, your mom is looking after it. Furthermore... while these people are likely real, they are being created because you are asleep. I need to make you wake up and the only way is if I take you out of the dimension through a portal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What? Why would you expect me to believe that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't say I expect? But I need your cooperation. If you don't wake up more and more of these people will be created."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What happens to them if I wake up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, they shouldn't be harmed. They might or might not be actual people, but if you don't wake up their numbers will grow continuously until your real body dies."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They'll keep existing, though?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, the place and it's contents are real," Felix reassures.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Okay. What do I have to do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Literally, just come with me to the portal and walk through. Then you will wake up and we can come back and bring these people to a hospital."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's do it."

He follows Felix.

Permalink Mark Unread

Unless they have a random encounter with some monster, they should be able to get back to the super-creepy tree.

Permalink Mark Unread

There it is!

The winds whispers gently, wrapping around Felix like a blanket.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's wake up."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix opens the portal and conducts Scott through it before going himself.

Permalink Mark Unread

Scott wakes up, clutching his head in pain.

He whimpers and waits.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix shows up soon enough.

"Are you okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I'm fine," he says, gritting his teeth, his eyes yellow.

"I think I'm supposed to go back to the tree."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think, the best thing right now is if I create a couple of portals so we can evacuate the people from your dimension and take them to a hospital."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I should have thought of that. Those poor people! Have they only existed as long as I've been asleep?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. They still exist now, the pocket dimension is still out there, but they are only a few hours world. You likely have the power to create more, but only on purpose, needless to say, is a disturbing ability."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds awful."

He might be distracted by the wind blowing outside, beckoning him to go to the tree.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, it is. But people are complicated enough that you can never do it by accident."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Am I going crazy or there is a tree calling me from the woods?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh? Oh, yeah, that's just the Nemeton. I'm surprised you can hear it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am surprised everyone else can't. What is it? Should I be worried?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. It just does this to us ever since we died. Stiles and Allison sometimes hear it too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...You died? Does it do that with anyone that had an death experience?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe? I thought it was because we sort of sacrificed ourselves to it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"..."

Felix shakes his head. "People, we have to save people... I need to sleep to create a portal to the lodge. Do you happen to have some sedative on hand? If you don't I can retrieve some from my own pocket dimension."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, maybe you can provide the sedative."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay... Do you want to go back there and help them out? I am not entirely sure how much difference you would make on a fight against possible monsters in the woods."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can handle them. I always have."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Always meaning, however long I've been sleeping? Uh, this is weird."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You have no idea. I will need to carry you to the portal that connects Earth to my pocket dimension, are you afraid of heights? I didn't want people or things wandering through it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, it's fine. Maybe flying is kind of cool."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Flying is the best."

Assuming Scott doesn't have better ideas, they can leave, Felix can carry Scott in his arms during the short flight through the portal. Hopefully, Scott will have fun.

Permalink Mark Unread

Turns out flying is not as fun as he expected, but it's at least faster, right?

Are they there yet?

Permalink Mark Unread

It will takes a few minutes, sorry, Scott.

He creates a flame and moves it downward, portal mid-air opens, they go through, then they are flying above a small house in the middle of a familiar forest. There is a much larger building off ways in the distance and Felix moves toward it.

"Are you alright? This is my dimension. I created that place over there in case we need emergency housing, but I also added ambulances for the ones that need to be moved to the hospital. There is a portal there that leads straight to the lodge."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks. I should be fine. Let's focus on this. Take us through the portal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay."

Eventually they land and go inside the building there is a room with a lot of stretchers to one side. Felix opens the portal with a single spark of flame and the lodge's interior is in the other side.

Permalink Mark Unread

Some of the people seem to be healing unnaturally fast. Others are covered in bruises, bleeding gashes, and in some cases, a disease that results in pus-filled- it's not pretty.

There are plenty of kids Scott's age and younger tending to them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Scott steps forward.

"Everyone, listen up. I know things seem grim out there, but help is finally here. The man with me is called Felix, and he brought us ambulances. Anyone who wants out has their chance. Take it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Are the people that heal unnaturally fast behaving oddly? Are the diseases identifiable?

Permalink Mark Unread

The diseases look like many things he's seen before.

They seem to take random symptoms from most real, contagious diseases he's heard of. A rash here, coughing fits there.

No one is behaving very oddly, except for some growling.

Permalink Mark Unread

Growling? Well... he guides people that want out through the portal, helping with the stretchers and the like.

When there is a free moment he asks Scott, "have you noticed some of them growling?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, yeah, that's just the werewolves."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, um. The dream werewolves are a little different than real werewolves, but there are some who work at the clinics and there are also the ones in the wilds that kill people. These are ones that I know, don't worry about them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure... but what do you mean with you know them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I feel like I've known them for years...maybe I don't?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix puts a hand on his shoulder.

"I haven't heard of the Dreamshard doing something like that with the dreamshaper, but it doesn't sound impossible... we can keep an eye out for weird signs, but we should take care of these people and then we can investigate their identities better."

Permalink Mark Unread

So they take care of these people.

Scott picks up a few people and carries them the waiting ambulances, and he keeps a lookout for anything that tries to take advantage of this opening to attack.

Permalink Mark Unread

Important logistic problem: How many people here are actually capable of driving ambulances? Because Felix certainly isn't one of them. They might need to take turns, enlist Scott's mom help or get the hospital's ambulances to meet them here.

Permalink Mark Unread

Most of the people here are not licensed to drive ambulances.

They are quite willing to try.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix knows nothing about driving, his wings made it unsuitable, anyway, they can send the worst case with the licensed to drive and them have a (not-)crash course on driving ambulances with the others?

Permalink Mark Unread

It turns out alright!

Nobody crashes, anyway.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, he will go back to Scott's house and retrieve the Dreamshard from there, so he can store it on a safe.

Permalink Mark Unread

Scott eventually makes it back.

"I think everyone's going to be okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is great. Uh, if they need a place to stay I can provide it..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I am a skymage. I don't suppose you know what that means."

He is quite shaken.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. Is there anything a skymage needs that humans don't?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He is human...

"No."

It is all he can say before crying.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh.

Hug?

Scott attempts to hug Felix.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix accepts hugs. There is some work around the wings, which is solved by having Scott being enveloped by very soft red-orange feathers.

Felix isn't being talkative for a long while.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's okay.

They have time, now.

It wasn't real. Everyone's safe.

Permalink Mark Unread

Suddenly, Felix gasps in shock.

"I forgot one! There was a kid in the forest and I thought he went with the ambulances, but he didn't! I am idiot! We need to find him!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. What can I do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Help me find him? Cover more ground? Can you track people? Now that I think about it, there might be more? There won't be new ones unless you decide to... make, but we should have made a sweep of the entire thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can smell them. I can still smell, them, right? If I could while I was dreaming? I can in real life."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You should, yes."

Does Scott minds being flown again?

Permalink Mark Unread

Not at all!

A little.

He finds Stiles by his scent quickly, directing Felix where to fly.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's Stiles, leaning against a wall in town.

He seems pensive.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix lands near him.

"Are you alright?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Apparently I'm not real. I thought that, but I didn't really believe it. Figured I was being paranoid."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, you are flesh and blood, but you are... new, a few hours world actually. Do you have a name?" Felix says, briefly turning to Scott. "Oh, I am Felix, I forgot to introduce myself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I went by Stiles. Am I still Stiles?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh...I think other Stiles might want to stay Stiles."

Permalink Mark Unread

So... not only this guy looks like Kato he also has his very own Arthur. Felix refrains from cussing out loud.

"I am so sorry, this must be really confusing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Got any good ways to shorten 'Stilinski', besides Stiles?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh... Sky? Not exactly right but you are allowed to pick something better. Do you want to come with us now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

'Sky' grimaces, but nods.

"Yeah, let's go."

Permalink Mark Unread

Since "Sky" is the only one that is an average human being, Felix should carry him to safety. Scott can patrol for more lost people.

He looks just like Kato and is a dreamborn too.

this gonna be weird.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sky thinks flying is great, and doesn't comment on any weirdness.

"Flying is so cool!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is isn't it?" Felix agrees.

Felix will go straight to the portal so he can get Sky to safety, are there any signs of someone or something below?

Permalink Mark Unread

Just a boring town and some woods.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix lands next to the portal near the creepy tree, he opens the portal.

Is Scott around, yet?

Permalink Mark Unread

Scott is hanging out by the creepy tree.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix lands depositing Sky on the ground.

"Hi, Scott. This is Sky. Can you sense anyone else in the woods?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, everyone else must have gone through."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, we should go through the portal then. Figure out what else we can do."

Felix steps through the portal waiting for them to come as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

Most of the immigrants are settling in comfortably, though they seem nervous and twitchy at fast-moving vehicles and at dogs.

Some of them might need therapy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Therapy, legal identies, ways to fulfill whatever dreams they have.

How is Sky doing? How about the ones sent to the hospital?

He pulls Scott aside. "Do you think you have any... Influence on these people?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Influence? You mean because of the dreamworld?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They are created by you, sometimes this makes them start existing considering you a friend, sometimes an enemy. I was thinking what we are going to do with them, in no small part because they have their own desires and goals that might not be agreeable with keeping this whole mess a secret."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can talk to them. If we have to, we can just let them tell. I'll try to keep them from talking about you too much."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks," he says deflated. He doesn't look like he is going to cry, and that is the best thing you can say about his apparent state of happiness right now.

"Well, I can't really come with you. Do you think the situation here is stable enough that I can retreat for a couple of hours while you go talk to them? We should talk before you go sleep again."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. I'll handle everything else, you rest."

Felix "rests" for a while, which involves crying, eventually it does involve actual resting and sleeping until Scott returns. Since he is asleep Felix dreamshapes, expanding his dimension in subtle ways, he creates a remote server and puts as much information he can pour into it, the magic and history of both universes, so he can check it later.

Permalink Mark Unread

Scott talks to the dream-immigrants.

Some of them are doubles of people, and for now, Scott can only provide them living arrangements.

Others are completely new, unique people. Trying to make a place for them in Beacon Hills will be hard. Scott considers trying to make the dream dimension more livable. He'll have to ask Felix for advice on how to 'influence' it, if he even can.

By sunrise, people at least have places to sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix forces himself awake and goes to search Scott by then. He looks disheveled, his hair a mess and his clothes the same he slept in.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey. How are you doing? I'm sorry about all this, I know you didn't ask to be here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I... thank you. So, I think I should just outright say I am from a different universe entirely. Get that out of the way in case... I don't know, I do something that is offensive for this culture."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Another universe? Are we...part of someone's dream universe?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think so? Have reason to be certain actually. I think your world is an alternate history version of mine, nearly identical but you guys didn't have pocket dimensions until the dreamshard got in here. Or if you do they are way more discreet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How exactly does the dreamshard work?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do you mean exactly? It activates whenever it touches someone that is sleeping, they become a dreamshaper. I don't remember the numbers, but I think it would take thousands of years to create a planet worth of pocket dimension. He points at the horizon who seems to go on for miles. It might not look like, but if you walk long enough things start getting fog and gray and that means you are reaching the dimension's edge. If you continue you will disappear for a few minutes and reappear either back here, or on Earth or another pocket dimension that is close enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Am I a dreamshaper?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yup. Since I managed to wake you up, you now have control over the ability and how the dimension grows and can open or close portals to and from it. But only when you sleep. There are others aspects of it that you might be able to control, but it varies for each dimension.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can make it safer. They could go back and live there, if they want."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You will only be certain after sleeping and taking a 'look'. You won't sleep normally anymore, instead you will... experience expanding the dimension as you sleep, under your control. They can live in mine if yours isn't amenable to live in. I already know that I can create nearly-arbitrary stuff."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I probably shouldn't sleep just yet. We have to figure out how to get in touch with your home."

Permalink Mark Unread

It's like Scott punched Felix in the stomach.

"Don't... don't stay up for me. That is going to take a long time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure we can figure it out, together. Dreamshaping got you here, right? Do you have some other way to accidentally travel dimensions?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No way to travel between universes like that. What happened was unprecedented. I was visiting a place called the Shattered Skies -- in the fifties there was a weird chain reaction of portals off the coast of Florida, they burst open - the portals started to produce this weird threads of energy and one struck me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The other reason I am not very hopeful it will be easy is that, I... I am immortal, and my immortality connects me with a floating rock from which I can be reborn. When I got here it broke the connection and it gave me another rock. The connection is extremely and redundantly strong. For it to break it can't be easy for me to find a way back."

"There will be a copy of me back there. They won't know that I exist."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry. I can at least help you adjust to living here, until we find a way. There has to be something. I can talk to Dr. Deaton, and maybe the Nemeton could make a difference."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you," that does make him feel a little better, he should have at least considered the local magic before despairing so much. "Who is Dr. Deaton? And what is Nemeton?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dr. Deaton is a druid. If there's magic that can help you, he'll know about it. The Nemeton is a local source of magic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Druid? Like the Dragons and Dungeons thing that does nature magic?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe? Ask Stiles- or Sky, I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix shakes his head. "Maybe? He looks a lot like... somebody that I used to know," Felix says regretting because that song is going to get stuck in his head, "are you going to introduce the two...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, I can do that. Who do you think would be easier to meet first?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, I mean introducing them to each other. Why you want to introduce me to Stiles? Is he your friend? I already met Sky."

"I could be there, it might help if you have someone to reassure Sky's personhood."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sky is dream Stiles, I guess?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, the one that you dreamed by accident! ...How do you think that is going to go? Between the original and the dream one? Not to mention" he doesn't want to use a pronoun that erases Sky's relationship "...the family?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He and Stiles will like each other, they just won't trust each other."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why not?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They're not generally very trusting people. If Sky is as much like Stiles as I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That might vary. I am not entirely sure how you can like a copy of yourself while trusting them. Anyway, are we going to keep Sky a secret from his relatives? Like I said I can house them just fine, but that is a different thing from providing them with family."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Did he have parents in the dreamworld? I remember thinking he did, but I don't know if I can trust my memories of that world."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unless we missed them in our search they didn't exist in the sense of being... made of atoms or anything. There could've been memories of them, without they themselves being manifest."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I remember them, and Sky might remember them, but they might just not exist? That's awful!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah... Any chance Stiles' parents and or siblings would accept Sky in the family?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's just his dad. I don't think he'd reject him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Any way to easy the blow?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"As long I introduce them and not Stiles, it should be fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ok, any reason we should do this now? Or we can have you take a nap and see what your dimension feels like when you are actively dreamshaping it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can try that. Do I have to do anything different, or do I just sleep normally?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You will fall asleep normally, then you will find yourself... Out of body experience doesn't really cover it, but it is close enough, you will be able to expand your dimension and feel it's properties and limitations vaguely like you can feel your own limbs. The dimension is a sphere right now, but I'd recommend that you expand it towards the sky. You can't dream and it is easier to wake, but the passage of time is kinda of finicky. You might be able to manifest a projection of yourself, kinda of an avatar, it can't leave the pocket dimension but it can interact with things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Let's try it. I just fall asleep..."

He looks for a place to lie down.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's like being bodiless adrift in a sea of energy and power, going through and around him. The energy wants to take shape, and if Scott pushes just the right direction he can consciously influence what the magic will create.

Permalink Mark Unread

...

Would he need to use a portal to get to the original world he made?

Is he going to accidentally create new people? He should have asked.

Can he force himself to wake up and ask?

Permalink Mark Unread

In a sense, Scott is now the world he created.

He can't create people by accident, the option is available right there as a option.

Scott can force himself awake if he has more questions.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure. Bodiless. Fun.

Can he try to find the woods and the monsters from before? Empty houses?

Permalink Mark Unread

Not quite. it is like trying to feel out something in his back without using his hands. There is a sense of what is there, but very vague, he could point out where the houses or trees are, maybe even get a vague sense of things moving but not what is moving.

Permalink Mark Unread

So the stuff he saw before in the dreamworld is still out there, he just can't see it.

That's good.

What if he adds a fence around the woods? Can he find where to put it?

Permalink Mark Unread

He can't change already existing things, but he can expand around what he already created with high quality fences.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good. That will slow down their encroachment.

Can he make plants that will feed the magical creatures of the forest?

Even though they mostly eat humans?

Permalink Mark Unread

He can create normal orchards with edible plants, he can add normal animals to the forest. His power even provides suggestions for what kinds of plants and animals he should make. Creating things that aren't proper for the climate feels.... not hard but slightly less automatic.

Permalink Mark Unread

How dumb can the animals be?

He doesn't want to create things just so they can suffer.

Permalink Mark Unread

He can give the animals all sort of genetic disorders, including various brain diseases and the inability to feel pain.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's not quite what he was hoping for.

...

Can he just make mindless animals that still sustain the monsters that eat them?

Permalink Mark Unread

To create something truly mindless... he can create dead animals, who were never alive or conscious, but are still warm and fresh enough to be eaten without problems.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dead without spending any time alive?

He'll take it.

Suddenly, dead animals in the forest. Lots of them.

Permalink Mark Unread

The creatures of the forest can eat animal flesh just as well as human, and well-fed, they won't attack any townsfolk.

Permalink Mark Unread

Suddenly his hold on the dream dimension is shaken and he might even think he lost control of it entirely...

...but no, Felix is just waking him up.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's going on?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We are suppose to check everything is right with your dimension... So, is everything right with your dimension? What can you do with it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh yeah. I can make things happen now, I think I stopped the monsters from wanting to attack humans, so people could move back in if they want. They might not want to, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. It might be a good idea to move the monsters instead? At least the ones that can't be reasoned with."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They live in the forest. I guess I could move the forest?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can't change or move things that are already there. But we could expand the forest away from the people and attract them there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. I'll get them to move elsewhere so people can use the woods for whatever they want, and create some kind of barrier between them. Maybe a lake."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix smiles. "That works, we can ask people's opinions and see how much space we are going to need."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Let's talk to them."

Scott follows Felix eagerly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You... should get some actual rest, unless werewolves don't need to sleep. They should be set up and this is a logistical problem that isn't going to be improved by drowsing people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can last longer than humans, but you're probably right. You'll be okay in your dream world?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll don't worry about me," it's not Scott's fault he is here, "when should we meet again? Also, have you explained things to your mom?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not yet. I'll talk to her. We can meet tomorrow for lunch, if you want to do that sort of thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, yes. I can bring conjured food if you are curious about caviar and the like."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you can just make it out of nowhere, yeah, sure. Should we do that in your dream world?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The proper term is pocket dimension. And yeah, it is effortless. Until I manage to set up ways to donate things, I quite literally have more things that I will know what to make with."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How officially do you have to set up donations? Can I start that too, for when you go home?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix flinches when he says 'go home' but then says: "Consider the amount of sheer mass we can do there might be some legal complications. I don't know the local laws, but I fully endorse you using your new powers for good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can be subtle about donations at first and still do good! No one will question food and clothes if we do it carefully."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix smiles warmly. "Of course. I bet some of the tricks I did back home can generalize to your universe."

"But after we have some proper sleep."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I should have been in bed already, probably. Have a good night."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good night."

Felix goes to bed...

...his new room is comfortable and luxurious and feels so very lonely right now.

Still he manages to sleep with minimal amount of crying.

As a means of distraction, since actually dreaming is no longer an option, Felix decides to create some outrageously luxurious food for lunch with Scott and his mom: beluga caviar, lobster, foie gras, kobe beef and white trufle are featured. Felix decides to skip the fugu.

Permalink Mark Unread

And the next morning, after he wakes up, Scott tries something.

He hits the snooze button, and tries to enter his pocket dimension.

Permalink Mark Unread

He is back there as soon he is back to sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

Can he make a portal from here to Felix's dimension that needs permission from both sides to work?

Permalink Mark Unread

To create portals he needs to...

...it's weird to put into words, but basically he needs to fold a point of tridimensional space and shape it in a tunel like way through a fourth spatial dimension until it connects to another section of tridimensional space (in this case Felix's dimension).

Also he can sense "points" that represents the circunstances which the portal will open, close, lock and unlock. Scott can pick those circumstances as long they are related to taking care of things. He can set it up, so both sides of the portal require it to happen.

Permalink Mark Unread

Weird and a little confusing, but he'll figure it out.

He starts trying to help the forest grow, creating natural barriers between the beasts and where the humans will live.

Fences made of vines and ivy, made of thorny bushes and thick trees, and a portal in the tangle.

Permalink Mark Unread

He tries the portal.

Permalink Mark Unread

The portal is created!

Permalink Mark Unread

Well. Scott steps through the portal, and looks around.

Permalink Mark Unread

...He wakes up.

Permalink Mark Unread

Right, okay.

He wishes he'd paid more attention to what Felix had been saying about all this, but he'd been more focused on keeping him from crying.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe he should have taken notes.

Anyway, he is awaken now.

Permalink Mark Unread

So he is.

Can he try to find a portal? Is that how this works?

Pocket dimensions are kind of confusing.

Permalink Mark Unread

He could search for the portals he went through last night, Felix left a few in case people wanted to go through and from his pocket dimension.

Permalink Mark Unread

So if he tries to take a portal like the one from his own pocket dimension, and put one inside his house, can he use that to let people into his?

Permalink Mark Unread

If he can use dreamshaping to do something like that while awake it isn't very intuitive.

Permalink Mark Unread

So he finds one of Felix's portals and goes through.

Permalink Mark Unread

Now he is standing on Felix's topiary garden, he saw this area during the night and is even prettier during the day. Felix's house is pretty close, he can even make out the shape of something with large red-orange wings sitting on the roof, facing away.

Permalink Mark Unread

That won't work.

"Felix?" he calls out softly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix can't hear that.

Permalink Mark Unread

He approaches the house.

"Felix!"

This time a bit louder.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix is startled, but then flies down and...

Permalink Mark Unread

...forces a smile for Scott. "Good morning. Are you adjusting well to sleeping while dreamshaping?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm learning. Thanks for all your help so far."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My pleasure. Do you have any questions?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do dreamshapers do in your home? Are they specialists people go to for help? What did you do before you came here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, while pocket dimensions are publicly known, the fact that dreamshapers make them is a secret. I don't know why. The last batch of dreamshapers was created by a really evil bastard that was using them to get rich. Me and my twin," there is a brief pang of pain in his face, "helped put the bastard down and have been recently used the powers for various charity reasons. Fire doesn't consume or harm things here in my pocket dimension, so we set up a power plant that provides energy at extremely low cost while I also secretly conjure things to donate to anonymously to various charities. The current arrangement between dreamshapers was not to go public, at least not yet. Most are traumatized after being basically enslaved and so had issues before... they were picked among people that wouldn't be missed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry. Dreamshapers in this world can be something good, from the beginning. We can make sure of it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you," Felix smiles more sincerely, "do you know of more specific ways to help? Maybe things that your world is likely to need? We don't have werewolves where we are from, except in legends or very specific wolf-related magic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The people here probably need the same things: food, shelter, clothing, medicine...werewolves don't need anything extra."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see... Actually, now that I brought it up. What is up with werewolves? I mean, what can you tell me? I checked your internet and... why are they a secret? How dangerous are they? Powers and abilities, that general thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mostly they're secret by choice. Packs keep themselves in check, but if there are omegas, they sometimes have trouble with control, and then they start hurting people. Hunters step in, and so it's easier if we regulate ourselves."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix blinks. "...Hunters?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. They hunt werewolves who can't control their violent urges and start killing people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And hunting is an euphemism for tracking them down and arresting them?" Felix says with edges of both hope and hysteria in his voice.

Permalink Mark Unread

"If they're part of a pack, yeah. They'll let alphas that can handle their packs the opportunity to resolve things internally. Omegas are different. They're alone, and out of control, and humans can't contain werewolves easily, without killing them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What they do with the omegas?!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They kill the ones no one can take responsibility for."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh my god. Oh my god," Felix repeats, "there ought to be a better way than that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry. It was hard for me seeing it, the first time. Hunters try to keep people safe. And any werewolf can be dangerous, they're not wrong to worry about those of us without packs."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then they should go to the government. Despite it's flaws any governmental justice system is likely to perform better judgement calls than a secret conspiracy that kills people as a form of justice. At least there ought to be more resources to contain instead of killing omegas! Who even becomes a hunter? Do these people also wear white hoods and burn crosses in the werewolves lawns?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The packs try to stay hidden from the government. The hunters didn't start that. They're not targeting us for no reason; werewolves are dangerous. They're wrong to kill us, but they're not wrong to think we might hurt someone."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why the packs stay hidden from the government?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some of them like toying with the local humans, some want to live separately from them, some are afraid of what the government might do to them- registration, experimentation- there are a lot of reasons to want to hide."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Urgh. That still sounds like something that is better handled without a masquerade, but I understand that shouting from the roof tops isn't a solution for the current state of the world. Do the packs at least do something with the werewolves that toy with humans? Actually, how many werewolves are out there? How do they evade human notice."

Pause.

"Are werewolves actually non-human?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's some debate. We can start off as humans, like I did, but some are born that way. We all look human sometimes, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix is deeply troubled like this. "I understand that this isn't my universe, but this kinda of... terminology is deeply troubling for me, I don't have the option to not look like a skymage, but this doesn't make me any less - or more - human. Historically implying otherwise didn't had nice implications. The fact that you have some werewolf-killing secret police doesn't help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think of myself as human, but Derek only sometimes does, and others like him, other born werewolves, seem to have the same attitude. They think that they're different than humans, and mostly better than them."

Permalink Mark Unread

Now Felix looks disgusted. "Who is Derek?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Former alpha, kind of a decent guy now. Still thinks being a werewolf is a gift, though he's nicer about pushing it."

Permalink Mark Unread

So many questions. "Pushing it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He doesn't target scared and isolated teenagers and offer them the bite. I guess he can't now, but still, he's changed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have so many questions that I don't know where to start? Could you give some context?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Derek was an alpha, and they can make more werewolves by biting or scratching people. He wanted more wolves, and he wanted a pack to help him fight another pack that was coming to town."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, tell me in what ways this is different from recruiting teenagers to a gang?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ask Derek. He doesn't do anything like that anymore, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I just might. How did the fight turn out? Are there causalities? Permanent damage? Is this kind of inter-pack conflict common?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not uncommon. I haven't faced another werewolf pack since then, but that's because they usually move around and share hunting grounds pretty fairly; there's usually enough food to go around."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You didn't answer my other questions..." Felix points out wearily.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's been a while, about a year. Stuff like that happens all the time around here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Scott," Felix says smiling with a desperate edge to it, "how many of the teenagers that Derek recruited died? How many did he recruit?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Three, that way. One who wanted it desperately, and blackmailed him into getting it. He's alive, and so is one of the ones he targeted. I can't do anything about Boyd or Erica, anymore than I could when it happened."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix hugs himself.

"I suddenly regret being entertained by every bad masquerade-having story that I have ever read," Felix says with a tone is both self-deprecating and miserable.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not that bad. We take care of each other."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix takes a break from being shocked to give him a "Are you serious?" glare at Scott.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry. I don't know what you need me to say."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry. It's just that this place is fucked up in a way that sounds horrible to fix."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not about fixing it. I don't have the power to do that, and it's a thorny situation. It's about keeping as many people alive and safe and happy as I can."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I understand, and I am not even... advocating to do throw yourself at the problem without thinking, but it is a very problematic situation one that I am likely to be around to deal with in the following centuries."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Centuries? Usually we plan based on years."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I am going to plan more on years, but I am immortal so planning on centuries isn't completely invalid. But what I mean is that, this kind of secret will eventually come out and I am going to be around to deal with the aftermath anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not immortal. If there's anything you think we can do to make change come more easily, I'm all ears."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would need more information. I suppose I could use my awesome conjuration abilities to bribe various packs into peaceful luxury or make ethical scientific experimentation with werewolves so the government and various organizations don't have to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bribing packs might help, hunters would have less of an excuse then, and we could trust that the ones who keep going aren't in it to protect people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The hunters really bother me in this set up - too many red flags - but I could have ways to bribe them, at least I can offer alternatives to killing, equipment aimed for containment, prisons that can be designed around the concept of building budget."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That might work. I'll ask Chris what he thinks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Please, thank you. Chris is a hunter?" Felix shuts up before asking how many people did he kill?

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Chris Argent. Part of a family of hunters, though there aren't that many of them left, anymore."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Should I meet him? How do you think he is going to react to me?" the supernatural being that he can't kill.

Permalink Mark Unread

"He won't know what you are, but you're not a werewolf and I can vouch for you, it shouldn't be a problem."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, anything else that I should know about him?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't talk about his family. It's a sore subject."

Permalink Mark Unread

Did werewolves killed a relative and he vowed revenge or something? But Felix doesn't actually ask. "How do hunters become hunters?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mostly it's a family business."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix wrinkles his nose. "Alright. Who else I should meet? Any other people... with influence in the supernatural underworld?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There are some friends you should meet. But besides them, no, just him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, they me more about them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, there's Stiles, we should really figure out what's going on with him and Sky..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah... There is a chance that Sky is just a superficial copy of Stiles, like if we ask him question, specially a not-you person, the answers will diverge between the two. And even if they are the same... Well, that is still a complicated situation."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. Maybe you and Stiles should talk to him. I guess first I should introduce you to Stiles, properly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That would help. Does he already know about Sky?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I explained it to him. He mostly thinks it's cool to have another him. He seems pretty sure that's what this is, even though I said it might not be."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We won't really know until we test it, let's hope they will both like each other and keep being friendly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't see how you couldn't get along with yourself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know! I am a twin and it is the best..." Felix voice loses the excitement as the words go by.

"So, where are my manners? I completely forgot to offer your something to eat? Are you hungry? Have you eaten breakfast eat?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not yet. Anything is fine. What do you like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's try the all American eggs and bacon," Felix says, leading Scott to the kitchen.

The kitchen is overly decorated (the entire interior of the house is) and the equipment is borderline futuristic.

Does Scott wants to help Felix to cook breakfast?

Permalink Mark Unread

He definitely does.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then they will have delicious breakfast in no time. Felix also serves fruits, toast, milk and the like if Scott wants.

Permalink Mark Unread

Scott will enjoy whatever, as long as he can help make it.

"Being a dreamshaper must be great. Being able to help people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Helping people is the best thing. I don't know why more people don't do it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Whenever you're ready."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix digs in. It is delicious.

"So how do you think your other friends will react to Sky?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know if I should introduce them right away. I should wait until I talk to him and Stiles. We can do that next."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix nods. "What are their names? And what are they like? I suppose we should be introduced as well..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's Stiles, obviously. Allison, Lydia, Boyd, Isaac. Maybe Derek."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are they werewolves too?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Boyd and Isaac are. So is Derek."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And Allison and Lydia got in the supernatural mix how? Are they anyone's girlfriends?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Allison got involved because I was her boyfriend, but her family were secretly hunters. I don't think she would have stayed out of it. Lydia isn't anyone's girlfriend."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix swallows deliberatively while processing this. "Her family... do you mind me asking why you two broke up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Derek...scratched her mother, defending me, and her mother did what any good hunter would do if she might become a werewolf; she had her husband help her kill herself. Allison was hurt, and her grandfather helped turn that against Derek and his pack. She started hunting them for destroying her family. When she calmed down, and realized how hypocritical he was to suggest that, she stopped, but she was ashamed of herself, and she decided I was better off without her."

Permalink Mark Unread

What kind of mess did he land in?

"Did you two had to hide your relationship?" Felix asks suddenly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"After her parents found out I was a werewolf, yeah. We pretended to break up, and then her mom saw us kissing and didn't take it well."

Okay, scream about taunting murderers by dating their daughter isn't going to help here.

"You do realize that they are major racists, right? Either that or you are not establishing properly how dangerous werewolves are, except that even then one has to wonder why keep them around unchecked anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Werewolves aren't a race. We're people, but we're not exactly human. I started that way, but Derek didn't, and we're violent in a way that humans can't be, even the really bad ones. Weapons make a difference, but werewolves are...casual about violence."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I used the word racist because I assumed that if I had used thaumotophobe, you would look at me confused. Regardless, then I ask what being 'casual about violence' means?"

Not to mention what sources do you have to back your claims, Scott, because this entire thing is smelling of hearsay, anecdotal evidence and superstition stewed on prejudice. But Felix doubts anyone went as far as compare a single werewolf to a single human under controlled circumstances, much less a randomly select group of each. Urgh, he landed on a Urban Fantasy novel without behavioral scientists.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're more aggressive, we lose control around the full moon, we have claws and teeth and when we don't focus, we shift forms, and we're always more dangerous when we shift. You have to take this seriously, this isn't some story, this is real life."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix sighs, he is less angry, but visibly not calmer, definitely tireder. He thinks for a minute.

"I know very well what real life is about, you think everything is sunshine and rainbows to magical people back in my universe? A lot of your situation sounds right out of the type of bad book that I like to read, except that is in fact real life and what I've know from real life is that people will be terrible prejudiced. They don't want to be bad. They don't know any better. I know.

And all that adds up to me thinking the situation is not acceptable as you present it. If Allison was in reasonable danger because she was dating you, then you failed to make it clear that you made a mistake in dating her. But even if it was a mistake you just presented me the reasons why I think the entire system is a mess:

There is a family of hunters that, finds death preferable to lycanthropy. Allison's parents decided that all the hurt it would cause her daughter, her family, all the pain, all the lost moments they would never have, they decide that was better than keeping Allison's mom secured somewhere. My uncled killed himself and-"

He stops and takes a deep breath and closes his eyes.

"I am not done. But could you give me a minute to regain composure?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Go ahead."

Permalink Mark Unread

Thank you, Felix covers his eyes and reorganizes his thoughts. It doesn't take a minute.

"Okay, uh. Please ignore what I was going to say about my uncle, I've never met him and... Ignore it. Anyway, continuing. You also said that your ex's grandfather manipulated said ex to seek revenge against Derek. I was shocked but not actually surprised that such situation happened. It is the kind of thing that red flagged the system to me. People get personal even without family death being involved. They get mean even without declaring the other side a different non-human or inferior. And people fail at properly analyzing the world, because fighting beyond your prejudices, superstitions and your family values is actually pretty hard. So, when you present the situation it sounds immensely more likely than not that hunters will behave like racists that did things like - you don't have openly known magic so - lynch black people because they are considered sub-human and more dangerous. Because it is human behavior and it happens regardless if the target is a innocent minority or an actually dangerous murderer..."

Then he pushes his plate away and rests his head on the table.

"I am sorry if it bothers you calling your ex's family racist, specially because the entire thing must have been difficult on all of you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Look, I'm sorry. I just don't think I can say they're wrong to worry about werewolves. They should check, before they kill people, if they're right, but werewolves are dangerous when we're alone. We need to have packs and anchors, or we're dangerous."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anchors? Also, what you have to say about your relationship with Allison? Or her mother's suicide?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anchors are thoughts that keep us from transforming and losing control. Mine was Allison. It's not normal, and maybe it's not good, to have a person be your anchor. Now, it's not Allison. How our relationship worked isn't your business, not really. Maybe it worked or it didn't, but she was never unsafe around me. Other people were."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe Mrs. Argent should have thought she had better options. If I could convince hunters that living a werewolf was better than dying, I would. But just because she should have had other options doesn't mean she made the wrong choice."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix is still resting his head on the table. Not looking up. He will be quiet for awhile.

Permalink Mark Unread

Scott zones out and stares at the table.

He wonders idly if it looks any different from tables that aren't from dreamshaping. Does it look like it came from a dream- details missing here and there?

Permalink Mark Unread

Nope, it looks as solid and real as any table he has ever seen. It is some kind of stone that combines dark marble with something that looks remarkable like gold and opals.

In fact, it might actually be a weird marble-gold-opal combination. It isn't really out of the place, the rest of the kitchen can be easily described as "tacky opulence", the ceiling above is a elaborate mosaic of what looks like a pair of Skymages in foreign-looking garments.

Permalink Mark Unread

Pretty.

He continues staring at the table, hoping it will solve his problems.

Permalink Mark Unread

The table fails to provide problem-solving solutions, but remains pretty.

"Sorry," Felix says suddenly, "I was insensitive."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You want to help. I understand, there are a lot of problems here and most of them don't have a good reason to exist, but they still do. You can't just tell people to make sense, that's not how people work. Maybe it would be easier, maybe it would be better- but things are complicated, and you have to talk to people involved, not just me. I can't explain everyone and what they were thinking."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not that I expect people to make sense, and I am sorry for putting the weight on you," he sighs, "there is so many hurting and pain going around in a way that keeps reminding me of some disturbing pictures of hate crimes against mageborn and this universe is going to be my new home for who knows how many centuries and... urgh, sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There are problems, and we just do our best to fix them. Worrying like this isn't how to think of solutions. If you want, we can try to make a plan of attack, something to handle the things you're concerned about."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am not worried because it's useful, I am worried because that is my emotional reaction to the situation, and I probably should hear more, from different people before settling on any sort of plan."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course, that sounds fair. Who do you think you need to talk to, anyone specific?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Chris Argent, since he is a hunter and Derek, since he is a born werewolf, both should know more about..." Felix makes a vague gesture, "the cultures? The dynamics of either side and how to proceed. I wouldn't mind meeting the your other werewolf friends as well. The more perspectives I have on this the better."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. I'll introduce you to everyone. Ready to go?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just let me put these in the dishwasher and get a trenchcoat."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think I have a trenchcoat lying around. Can you make one, or should I?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, I have one, just hold one." It takes a couple of minutes but Felix returns wearing a trenchcoat.

His wings lump under it, and it is very conspicuous and attention grabbing, but not intrinsically worse than having his wings exposed.

"Ready. I look ridiculous, but I am ready."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Let's go."

They leave his dimension. Scott sighs.

"I'll have everyone ready in an hour. Where do you want to do this?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anywhere that is relatively comfortable and dash or a neutral ground? In the future I might host things in my own dimension, but I don't want to overwhelm people with right away."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you don't care where, I would say Dr. Deaton's office."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, sounds perfect."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want to wait there? I'll lead the way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If it is no trouble." His wings squirm inside the trench-coat. "Am I going to be able to remove this while I await there? It is less comfortable than I thought."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, he won't care."

Scott leads him to his motorcycle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, motorcycle. Felix never rode one of those death-traps even after becoming immortal. At least the novelty of the experience should distract him from that half crushed feather on his left alula.

Permalink Mark Unread

So Scott sends a few vague texts and they drive to Dr. Deaton's office.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Scott, what are you doing here, you didn't mention changing your shift...and who's this?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is Felix. Mind if we talk inside?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've met Scott recently," Felix says.

Felix can't believe he is in a wing-covering trench-coat talking with someone, he mocked that trope so much.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, come in."

He steps back.

Permalink Mark Unread

Scott looks at the door, and then at where it meets the ground.

"He's safe. I trust him."

Permalink Mark Unread

Is there something weird about the door? Felix walks in anyway and introduces himself properly. "Felix Dalkaila, it's a pleasure to meet you." Handshake?

Permalink Mark Unread

Handshake.

"It looks like mountain ash is no protection from him anyway."

He uses his foot to clear away a layer of dust on the ground.

Permalink Mark Unread

Scott comes in.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix steps over the dust. "Mountain ash? Well, I am kinda of... from far away."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, I have heard some of the details. I'd like to get the long version from you someday, but I think first I'll extend my apologies. Our world may not be the worst I can imagine, but being so far from home can be difficult."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah... thank you. It is just not used to a world like this, that is all. It is more than a bit shocking."

Permalink Mark Unread

Knock knock.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That must be our guests. Felix, are you ready?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure... When everyone is assembled I will remove my coat dramatically to reveal my wings."

Ah, Felix thinks to himself, humor that they won't really get, great job Felix.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Come on in. Everyone, this is Felix. I'm sure you've gotten bits and pieces."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello Felix. I'm Allison. It's nice to meet you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello, Allison! Felix Dalkaila, charmed to meet you." He tries to bow but has to stop halfway through, there is no proper way to bow with his wings like this, or at least no proper skymage way. His wings visible squirm under the trench coat.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can probably take that off as soon as the whole crowd comes in. Not a big deal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks, you are Stiles right?" Sky's original.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's me. You're Felix, the guy Scott can't  stop talking about."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I said I had someone I wanted you to meet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Whatever, same thing. How're you liking our town?"

Permalink Mark Unread

What a weird person. "I haven't had much opportunity to do much sight-seeing, but it looks lovely," from above at least.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's very diplomatic. At least it has trees, but otherwise it's not exactly the best place to live."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix looks at Scott confused. "I heard you have... problems between the two factions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The two factions?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hunters and werewolves. I may have gotten him confused when I was explaining some history."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. No, we work together now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, okay. He did forgot to mention that. And I wanted to meet more people so I could get more sides of the story anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, here we are. What do you want to know?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well... everything about the supernatural underworld and how it works? Werewolf traits? Specially behavioral ones? I think Scott implied there is more than one kind of werewolf and I want to know the differences? How many werewolves are out there? Now that I think about it, what is mountain ash and why Dr. Deaton thought it could stop me? Oh, and I very curious how the entire thing remained a secret."

"Basically, I have a lot of power to throw around, and I would like to know more so I can be responsible about it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's usually one pack to each town, more in big cities. Packs are usually at least four wolves. They can get pretty big before there are any problems, especially with born werewolves. Their pack is their family and their family is their pack."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What is the average per pack? And per big city? A fermi estimate gives me... a minimal population of one hundred thousand werewolves in the US. Does that sound accurate? Os the US a good average to estimate world population?"

"Also, sorry for the way I said I had a lot of power earlier, I meant I have a lot of potential for change and want to use it for good. If it turns out it is better for me to stay out of the supernatural, I will."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The only pack I've met has two members right now. The pack that used to live in this town had at least ten. A hundred thousand sounds right. It's never hard to find some if you know where to look."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's nothing wrong with wanting to help people."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix thinks... he doesn't need to reveal his ability to do an werewolf census just yet.

"What about the mountain ash?" Felix asks the doctor.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mountain ash protects my office from supernatural creatures. Until I cleared it away, Scott couldn't come in."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Stops how? Does it need to be in that powder form or something that wouldn't blow away by the wind?" Or maybe hidden..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The wood of this building is carved from mountain ash. I use powdered form to close the circle, and to open it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Does it need to be powdered for that? What happens if a supernatural tries to break in anyway?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose I could use some sort of movable piece of wood, but there's magic in completing the circle that might not work the same way. Until I open it, the barrier is impermeable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, interesting. How impermeable? It's a magical property of the mountain ash or the supernatural creatures? Does it also make it impermeable against things that aren't supernatural creatures?"

Oh, boy, he sure makes a lot of questions.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mountain ash only traps supernatural creatures, and only when used by someone that is not superatural."

Permalink Mark Unread

He almost asks what stops anyone to just blow the dust with their breath or use explosives and firearms... except that just before he speaks it occurs to him that either this doesn't work or it does and maybe he shouldn't announce these exploitable ideas out loud, for all he knows there might be some really delicate politics that he just barged into. He will see if can talk with Deaton alone then.

"How much of my capabilities Scott already mentioned?" He asks so ast to not keep his mouth open.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Enough to be going on with. You're altrustic and not cruel, so I suppose I should thank you pre-emptively for whatever you plan to do here. I do wonder about...Sky, as you called him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sky?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"My twin from the mirrorverse. I should probably meet him, but Scott wants to 'prepare us' for it, since we can't take care of myselves."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, when Scott's dimension was created it duplicated some people. What do you want to know, Dr. Deaton?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"To what extent is he independent?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't answer to your personality-wise, but he should work as any other human being. There might be something magic and specific going on, but then only really Scott would be able to guess, by going to sleep and metaphorically squinting at the part of his dreamshaping that creates people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You liked me so much you had to make another one?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You made a person."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah...I talked to him a little, but I think he and Stiles should talk before he meets everyone else."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He didn't do it on purpose," Felix tells Allison, a bit concerned.

Should he bring up the others that Scott made? Maybe, let Scott do it on his own.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We should talk later."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, we will. Felix, could you talk about what your plans are, what you're hoping to do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, and keeping in mind the details are highly adjustable at this stage. I have the power to expand a pocket dimension that might contain a lot of useful things, food, medicine," Felix is not gonna say weapons," equipment of various sort, buildings, I can even make blood, organs and limbs that match the DNA of their recipients. My pocket dimension also has this property where fire doesn't consume things unless there is a pyrokinetic willing it to do that, so I can set up power-plants that don't consume fuel. Basically, I would like to... leverage that to improve things here, possibly by making the various things I mentioned available to hunters and packs."

"And I am also immortal, can fly and can manipulate fire and weather."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Power plants without fuel? We could definitely use those."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Scott can do some of that sort of thing too?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix smiles warmly at Allison before responding to Stiles. "Yes, he has his own pocket dimension. I am not sure if he is capable to do the same things as I do with mine."

Scott's dimension is limited that he can mostly do beacon hills or forest-areas.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Could Scott do food and medicine?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think Scott could answer that better, but he can at least make a forest, so it should be easy to make something like an orchard or just outright make a pile of food somewhere. I am not sure about medicines, but there might be ways to leverage in that direction."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some medicines come from plants, but I don't think I can make any medicines from scratch. We would have to grow the ingredients or something. Food should be easy, though. I can make plants and animals really easily."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, a trick is trying to come up with a suitable narrative. Try thinking that maybe someone had a secret medicine warehouse in the middle of the forest or something like that. It might not work, but it is worth a shot."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A lot of medicine comes from plants if you go far back enough. No reason we can't just take them in their natural state and have them work. All you need is the knowledge of how the body works, and how different chemicals react...I've already been focusing on biology, no reason not to study harder."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I greatly appreciate this line of thinking."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You haven't told us much about yourself, Felix, just your powers. Do you mind sharing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well... I am Felix Dalkaila, I have an identical twin brother called Fenris - his greater gift is flight so his wings are different - a younger sister called Maira that lives with our grandparents back in Stormlands after our parents passed away. My hobbies are basically reading, specially terrible skymage-as-the-love-interest romances that you don't have, but trust me they can get bad, movies, hanging out with friends... figuring out ways to use magic for the benefit of mankind honestly sounds like a hobby to me but I understand if that sounds more like an aspiration," Felix shrugs, "I like long flights over the beach and the sunset? I am fairly normal, honest."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Twins, huh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anyway. Besides general altruism, you probably have other plans."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, Stiles, Twins," Felix pulls out his wallet and shows a picture of him, Fenris and Maira - who looks ten in that photo - to Scott he says. "Well, none of my former plans apply here and while 'get to know more supernatural-aware people that I can talk to' also works for friendship-making reasons it is part of the more important general altruism."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The supernatural world has some problems, yeah. Do you have a way for werewolves to control themselves better?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nothing specific? Just ideas, I would want to know what sort of things werewolves have tried, work out the things they didn't and supply as needed. Maybe there are drugs that would allow them to control themselves better and no one tried them or tried the correct dosage. I really want someone with the relevant medical knowledge to perform some proper experiments on werewolves. Ethical experiments," Felix amends.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Drugs could work, maybe..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm a veterinarian, my expertise is not very helpful for handling humans, even though I do have some experience with werewolves."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Scott is going to be a doctor, he can start a werewolf research facility."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It would be better if we could get a werewolf research facility sooner than that, but I would be happy to employ Scott if that is the career path he picks. Any idea if it would be hard to find someone in the masquerade that might have the relevant skills? Actually... do werewolves usually have day jobs and the like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I work at the vet's office. My mom is a nurse. Derek and Isaac don't have jobs."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do they need money or a place to live?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Isaac has been staying with us, and I don't think he should be on his own, but it couldn't hurt if he had more space...I'll have to talk to him and my mom. Derek is fine, he has a huge loft to himself."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix relaxes. "Oh, okay. And that is another avenue I could help, creating real state is rather trivial to me, if more complicated to distribute and maintain."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We do have homelessness in general, anything you could do to help would be great."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do fully plan to give us much as I can to charity, but I do kinda want to focus on the supernatural since it is likely to benefit more. Unless you meant homeless werewolves?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We probably have those, but they're all hiding. I was talking about humans."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you want to fix our problems, you could help us get in touch with other packs. They're hard to find."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It wouldn't be trivial, but I probably can find packs for you. Do anyone know if werewolf is something purely magical or there is something physical about it? Genes? Physiological differences that a medical exam could pick up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know if there are obvious differences when we're not transformed, but we react to certain substances, like mountain ash and wolfsbane. If you can use that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will try that," Felix makes a note to himself.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You could ask my mom if she's comfortable running tests on me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, but I will try without tests tonight anyway and it might be easier than expected. Do you happen to have tests from before you become a werewolf to work as a baseline? Actually, have you run any of those tests since becoming a werewolf?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've haven't had a checkup since I turned. I don't have asthma anymore, so I've been avoiding making the doctors any more suspicious."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Being a werewolf cures asthma?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Asthma, epilepsy, fatal injuries and probably some fatal diseases."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix blinks at him and the looks around for a denial then he pinches the bridge of his noise. "That... is very useful information to have while making decisions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We really can't make people into werewolves to cure them. If you want to find a way to study how it happens, replicate it, then fine, but not just turning people. We don't do that, we're not that cruel."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix really wants to ask if Scott hates life as a werewolf so much and that his self-loathing is of such magnitude that he can't possibly bear the notion of people getting an informed consensual choice about and then picking "yes". Or if he has ever calculated the downsides of being an werewolf against the downsides of asthma? How much it costs world wide to keep asthma sufferers healthy and how many opportunities they lose? The lives that are lost gasping for breath? Did he then repeat that same calculation for epilepsy? And other vaguely defined but broad fatal diseases and injuries?

Felix doesn't say that, he strongly suspects that Scott didn't, most people wouldn't. More importantly, Allison is in the room. He isn't even confident if there is a kind way to unpack "cruel". Urgh.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, Scott..." Felix says after a silence, "I would dearly, dearly like to know, what is your mental model of me and what parts of it cause you to think that it is better for not to offer me information that I might find relevant or make you unable to understand what information I might find relevant. Because, while I understand how you might not trust me, I really don't understand what part of our brief acquainted made you think that I will make less mistakes by not having enough information." His voice is very flat and neutral.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Werewolves, when they transform, can be uncontrollably violent for weeks. Stiles chained me to our radiator until I found an anchor- and then we found out alphas can command their betas to transform anyway. Nothing makes us safe when we transform. Safe means not changing. I could never turn someone willingly."

Permalink Mark Unread

That is not what I asked! Felix thinks. "This information was relevant when we talked earlier, why did you fail to- sorry, let rephrase that. Why didn't you offer this information earlier?"

He is not even going to mention on how weeks of violent urges stack against years of suffering and possibly death.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think you should talk to someone else about all of this. Stiles, Allison, good luck."

He vanishes into the back of the office.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, uh, what do you want to know."

Permalink Mark Unread

Deep down, there is a part of Felix that wants to react sympathetically, but he... can't. He is away from everyone that he loves and apparently this enough of a fragile emotional state that something like Scott's inability to properly make basic arguments is enough to make Felix's emotional availability to go comatose.

"First, I would like to know how to avoid a repeat of this reaction? I truly don't wish to cause Scott discomfort and if at all possible I would like to know how to repair whatever hurt I've just caused. I have guesses why Scott reacted like that, but I don't feel confident about them and I understand it is a personal subject, but I do wish to do better. Second, where I can find a itemized list of all werewolves and other supernatural creatures traits?"

He says all that with a very neutral voice, not even a cold one, just a detached tone that makes him sound like a completely different person.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No one's studied this. There are no scientists who know about this and are still working. My family has a bestiary, if you want that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can give you what I've got so far."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll go check on Scott. Felix, you worry about yourself, we'll get you all the information that we have."

He heads to the back as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tell Scott that I hope he gets better, Dr. Deaton. I would love to get every piece of information that both of you could give me, thank you." Felix says still neutrally. "Allison, did you just implied there used to be scientists that worked on this and no longer do? Do you know who they are and how to find them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They're dead, in prison, insitutionalized, or no longer interested in science. You might get somewhere with the last group, but some of those are kind of...they're not good people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That description is very worrying. Is there someone stopping them or something? I was thinking that we could pay them for whatever discoveries they made and then proceed making ethical experiments."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It might be better to get ethical people and start from scratch. Humans have never dealt well with the things that go bump in the night."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I - a human no matter the extra add ons - plan to deal well with things that go bump in the night and do ethical research done by ethical people. However, ethical research is not completely safe research and I was hoping to use some of the insights by unethical people, in case they could contain useful information like not using this or that chemical agent because it has a terrible side-effect that only shows up in years and our ethically sourced volunteers will die from it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know how you'll get that from them without talking to them, but I can find you some."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do druids count as scientists?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Matter conjuration that allows copies of things," Felix explains to her, "I would at least have an idea where to find whatever I am copying or it would take forever, so giving me the unethical scientists address should be enough."

"I am not familiar with druids to know," Felix tells Stiles, "but knowing more about them can only be useful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So if the research was destroyed, you can get it back? I'll get locations for you as soon as I leave."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was thinking abandoned notes, but I should be able to do that, yes. Names of whoever was doing the research also helps. Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is there anything else you can think of right now? Otherwise I can get you that information and the book."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I could just make a copy of the book after a nap if you could specify the book a bit more. Unless you have more than one copy and is willing to lend me one for me to copy tonight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What kind of information do you need to conjure it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Name is good enough, but author, descriptive location and any trait about it will make it faster. Actually, do you remember a specific phrase in it? I can then just have my magic go looking for a book with that phrase inside the Argent residence.... It is not dissimilar to google search."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Like the wolf, the Kanima is a social creature...that's translated, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Translated from what? Actually, can you give me the original phrasing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's written in Latin. I don't remember the phrasing. We have it in PDF form, if that makes things easier?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It does, I will just download it then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So if I say "Chris Argent's flash drive" can you just get an exact copy?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can you? That's awful. You could steal someone's identity from here. How lucky are we to have you instead of your evil twin?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Technically, I can, but it takes longer if the information isn't physical to the object. I would have a easier and faster time just copying all flash drives inside your house than just the one that belongs to your dad. How luck you should consider yourselves depends how much you care about having me around versus having someone that can grant immortality and skymage powers once per month and is the much better twin."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You seem like an okay guy, I guess. There's the part where you're being a little too helpful-"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ignore him. He wants to be paranoid when he grows up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, did the bridge between me and Scott just burned? And how badly it did?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure. I don't know why he reacted like that, he's usually very polite."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's kind of sensitive. You probably implied dogs aren't people or something."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sensitive, enough that he can't make arguments or extremely basic warnings for why werewolves are dangerous? Even when it was valid to mention that earlier because it was relevant to Victoria's suicide? Not to mention when Scott did reveal about the control thing, it was in front of Allison, who could be upset of the reminder of her mom's death...

Felix stops that train of thought, it will give him a headache.

"Normally, and please, do tell him this, I would be quite happy to hear the suggestion of reversing engineering the werewolf ability for healing. Also, Why is so hard to get information from him? Even when I ask why he won't inform me, he ignores the question and says something else."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe you should ask better questions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do you want to know? I'll try my best to explain."

Permalink Mark Unread

Allison is the one that is trying to be reasonable and cooperative and she is the one that he has to work around because of course Scott doesn't mention how sensitive she is on the subject, Joy. "Well, the information on supernaturals, which is itself useful for practical purposes is part of it, but I find it weird why he doesn't react to questions reliably and," he waves at Stiles, "knowing how to ask those questions would be useful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's afraid of people who seem comfortable with power, which you do. You take charge, and he doesn't trust that, but he thinks you have good intentions and the right priorities, so he brought you to us, because we can handle that better. If you want to get answers out of him, you should probably ask him for a summary of what he's been through, not how things work. And definitely don't imply he's stupid, even if you think he's wrong on everything, he'll just direct you to us. If you're okay with talking to us instead, you can do that though. I don't care if you call us stupid."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If it was just a matter of me thinking Scott is stupid or wrong it would be a lot simpler. Scott confuses me. I can't understand how his motivations and methods align. Would it help with the comfortable with power thing if I try to explain why I am like that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Explaining your motivations is a good way to get Scott to be more cooperative. Might be worth a shot. He's usually pretty helpful, though. If it's just that he doesn't explain things enough you should ask questions more often. He tends to keep secrets a lot, so even when he's sharing information he plays things close to his chest on instinct. "

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh? Being used to keeping secrets does help me understand him a little better." Felix says and then grunts, "hold on."

He removes his trench-coat with some difficulty but soon his wings are released and he stretches them to their full span.

"Sorry, but I was having circulations problems. Should I try explain myself to Scott now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...It might help. They'll be in the back, taking care of the animals."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well... I can wait."

Felix stretches his wings some more to get the blood circulating, they reach the ceiling and are quite impressive. After a while of this he starts combing them with his fingers, that can occupy him for a while.

Permalink Mark Unread

After about twenty minutes of whispered conversation with Stiles, Allison heads for the door.

"I'll be going now, I can't really keep my dad from worrying with just texts if I'm gone this long. Nice meeting you, Felix."

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a few more minutes of quiet before Scott comes out.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey. Did you get any of your questions answered?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix will say goodbye to Allison and keeping on preening. Wings: more high-maintenance than they look.

"Hey." They can even see the attempt of a smile in his face fail. "Sorry for earlier. And yes, I got some questions answered." He glances at Stiles. "Would you like to talk?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm okay, thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You have nothing to be sorry about. I over-reacted."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Even if I were to agree, it would be a good idea if I explained myself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Go ahead."

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe Scott will react better to a story as opposed to just pure reasoning...

"Okay, I am going to start from way back. I already mentioned that one of my uncles committed suicide... His father, my grandfather, was very serious about responsibility and having his children overachieve on everything. That uncle had a set of powers that made him excellent to police other skymages so my grandfather pushed him to train that and it was so much that my uncle decided to take his own life. This prompted my other uncle and my mom to flee to America alongside my dad, Stormlords do arranged marriages and they didn't approve of my dad as well."

"So they start a new life in America and Fenris and I are born soon after, our little sister a few years later. Of course, my parents didn't want to commit my grandfather's mistake, but they sort of overshoot. They still wanted us to do well in school but they always phrased it as about being ourselves, that this is all that we should care about and we didn't need to give a damn about how many weather-solvable problems we saw on the TV."

"And this was in America, our version, I mean. Where around 80% of the population believes in angels, and a substantial fraction of that believe global warming is purely skymage-made because we are the descendants of Satan. I wouldn't quite compare with racism, I have a lot of strong powers after all, but... people wince when they register the fire-coded colors of my wings sometimes even cross the street. My mom had to volunteer as an assistant so kindergarten would accept us. A friend once said I couldn't come over because her parents didn't approve of mageborn, that kind of thing. Is not without reason, but it is... different from what other people dealt with."

"And the general sum of those pressures was such that... We had to be comfortable with the idea that we are more powerful than anyone around that wasn't our parents - we had to - or we would cultivate a very unhealthy emotional state. And we couldn't just trust everything we were told no matter if the person loved us or if they were, like nearly everyone, well-intentioned. So we had to be on the look out, figuring out why we should do things instead of having the answer handed to us. Inaction or ignorance might not make us guilty, but it doesn't mean that we couldn't have done better and... Not being able to even know the consequences of what I am doing is quite frankly terrifying, because I have a lot of power to leverage things in the right direction but I need to know which direction I have to leverage."

"Well, that is not all of it, but it is a good chunk of it. And you shouldn't feel bad - I don't want that from people - but I wanted to explain my point of view and why it might look like I want to arrive in this world and be suddenly handed its keys so I can do whatever with it. I don't. I want to help, and to do that I have to have initiative or I am not being responsible."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. I'll tell you what I know about how werewolves work and you can ask questions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll start with a summary and you can ask for more detail. Werewolves are born or turned, we transform uncontrollably until we learn to control the shift. We're stronger, faster, and have better senses than humans, especially when we transform. We're violent, both ways, more than most people. The moon makes it harder to control the violence and the shift. It's contagious, alphas can make betas. Alphas can do more than betas, they can take memories away and give them. They can make their betas transform and join them. An alpha's betas are all the wolves they make or count as family. Betas become alphas by killing them or by inheriting it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix notes. "Several things to have their limits tested. If I die it is likely to restore lost memories. When you say that alphas can give memories, what do you mean exactly? Can they give false memories?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They can share their memories with people, and if they take one person's memories, they can give them to someone else. False memories, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is terrifying." Felix says still with the same neutral expression. "Is there a way to break the connection between the alpha and betas? Or maybe change it to someone else?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not exactly. After Derek killed Peter, he thought he would inherit me, since I was Peter's beta...but I rejected him, and he didn't force me, and now I don't have an alpha. Derek could try to control me, but he didn't turn me, and alphas who didn't turn a beta have less power over them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, no obvious solution to that problem yet. No good solution at least. Side-question: Are you aware of other kinds of mind-effecting magic? Because I want to make my top priority defending both of us against that. We're dangerous if controlled by the wrong people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Besides alphas, there's not a lot that I know about. Maybe druids can do something like that, but not very powerful even if they can...ask Dr. Deaton about that. I guess becoming a kanima counts, but most people won't do that. If you have unresolved issues and you get bitten or scratched, you turn into a kanima. Kanimas are controlled by a master."

Permalink Mark Unread

Note. Note. "Any idea if the alpha-memory power has limits like... How much information they can give or take? Or how fast they can do that? Iiii can probably create a shell for a person to be downloaded in."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know if they can usually do whole people. Peter did once, but that might have been a special case. We don't really know much about how banshees work."

Permalink Mark Unread

Notes. "Do we have a collaborative alpha and beta that would be willing to test how the connection interacts with pocket dimensions?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You might be able to get Derek to help."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "What are banshees?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We don't really know. They're psychic, they sense deaths before they happen, they resurrect alphas...our friend Lydia is one. You can meet her, if that might help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If is no trouble, I would like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anything else before we go?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, when Sky going to meet you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Who?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your...the you from the dream dimension. We talked about this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, and you said I had to be nice to him. Doesn't sound much like me, if he needs handling."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Regardless how much 'you' he is, there is a person who looks exactly like you and most people find that relevant."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Stiles, I can't abandon him. He exists because of me, I have a responsibility to take care of him, and he wants to meet you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fine, I won't poke him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There is also the issue of meeting your father."

Permalink Mark Unread

"One step at a time. Felix, you're coming, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

They head out. Stiles drives, and offers Felix the back seat.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Sure, assuming he can't just fly there or something, Felix will take the backseat.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Have you made a lot of people before? It must be weird to have that kind of power."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, it is a very scary power. My dreamshaping created dozens before I woke up and could control it again. I used that aspect of the power voluntarily only once and that only because dozens would die if I didn't."

Huh. He is actually failing at feeling ashamed of creating Leo, how weird.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What happened to them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A building collapsed because of a car accident, many were injuried and later many got sick. We couldn't take them to a hospital. They are human but a new type of magic person with reptilian features including scaly skin. So it would jeopardize the dreamshaping secret. So I had to create a doctor for them."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix doesn't offer further information unless prompted to.

Permalink Mark Unread

They can pretty much sit in silence.

Permalink Mark Unread

Until they arrive. The dream dimension immigrants seem to be settling in nicely, despite being generally confused about everything.

Permalink Mark Unread

It is a very overwhelming situation. Where is Sky?

Permalink Mark Unread

He's in one of the common rooms, playing chess. He stares at them when they come in, but doesn't address them, and gets back to his game.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sky, can we talk?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Chess.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I always wanted a brother."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, we didn't."

Chess.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix glances at Sky's partner, then back at Sky. "Are you more invested in this game than going through the process of talking with Stiles?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not interested in talking to him. You, I'll talk to."

It looks like he's losing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why you don't want to talk to him? And any particular thing you want to talk to me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can talk about whatever you want; if they have something to say, you're going to say it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course things can't be simple in this world.

"Excuse me," Felix addresses Sky's partner, "this is likely to turn out to be a private and emotional conversation and I would hate to see you being caught in the blast radius. Do you mind if I take your place?" Then to Scott and Stiles. "Is there anything you would like to say to him?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No problem, I was going to win anyway."

Sky's partner gets up and leaves.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix sits and moves a piece absently.

"How are the accommodations here? Anything you need?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not bad. We're all comfortable. How have they been treating you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix thinks the best way to answer this, it looks like he is thinking about his best move.

"They are doing their best to help me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mhm."

He checks to see what Scott and Stiles are doing.

Permalink Mark Unread

They are quietly talking a few tables over.

Permalink Mark Unread

"How good is their best?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix looks at Sky for a long moment.

"I have decided to pretend that I am my brother and shut down my emotions so I could properly deal with it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe I should try that. Too bad I don't have a brother. How're you enjoying being alone in the universe, by the way?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not."

"How are you dealing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not."

He resets the pieces.

"I thought we could use a fresh start," he explains.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix doesn't even bother with being suspicious.

"Was this supposed to be meaningful?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, I'm not opposed to a metaphorical fresh start. I think I could use one of those too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose it is a good time as any, but not knowing you that well, I don't know how to advise you further. Would Scott and Stiles be part of this fresh start?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They don't want to be, and I can handle being alone just fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why do you say that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's true. Scott abandoned me the minute he realized what happened."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I assume he was at least in a bit of a shock and likely very confused by the whole deal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He can feel however he wants, but he doesn't want me around, so I won't be."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix thinks about his next move for a moment.

"Are you sure he won't change his mind later? Or that isn't the terms you are thinking of the situation?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He won't miss me. He might regret scaring me off, but he won't want me back."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix sighs. "You... remind me of my ex. Uncannily so, he was also a dream created person with a twin, you two even look similar." Chess. "Don't you think it would be better to... try having something with them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It could be worth it, but it's a lot of work for something none of us want right now. I have friends here, sort of. It doesn't have to be that lonely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe not, but you don't have to cut off bridges so soon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think you're underestimating how hard it's going to be to talk to them, but alright. I'd rather just talk to you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix thinks than moves a piece. "You can talk to me any time you want, then. Does this resolution applies to everyone?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If the Sheriff wants to talk to me, he can. If Mrs. McCall wants to, she can. Scott and Stiles, no, and there's not anyone else I want to talk to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Scott because you feel he abandoned you and Stiles because he is...?" Felix is at loss for words.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're not talking about Stiles anymore."

Angry chess move.

Permalink Mark Unread

Very well. Unemoitonal chess move. "Any particular reason you want to talk to me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No baggage, or at least, not between us. I have baggage, you have baggage, but we can check it at the door, you know? Whatever issues we've got, we can just talk about them. Or play chess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is the most sensible thing I've heard since coming to this dimension."

Permalink Mark Unread

Chess continues.

"I hope they haven't been too bad. I know they can be a bit...thoughtless."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It can be... difficult. I'm strongly suspect Scott has internalized thaumatophobia - the hatred of one's own self because one's own magic. It's a thing in my world."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We probably don't have a word for that. And that's never how it seemed back home, but maybe it's different out here."

Permalink Mark Unread

Chess. "Home?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"In the dream dimension."

Sky captures the last bishop.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I see. And Scott did behave differently the first time I met him there." More chess, Felix is not particularly bad at it, but Sky is better. "Do you have plans for the future?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not plans, exactly. What I want is to help cracking open this complete farce of a supernatural conspiracy, but I also don't want to ruin lives, so. I'm trying to figure that out."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix tilts his head. "My exact sentiments. It is so absurd that such thing exists."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not absurd, a lot of times having trained experts working on a problem is good, and if werewolves want to form separatist communes, that's their business. It's just clearly not working, long-term. I'm not sure how to solve it, because I don't really want politicians or scientists or corporations involved."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix raises his eyebrows. "My thoughts exactly. I don't have a good angle so far, but I can..." He waves around him to illustrate what he can create, "which at least solves a lot of budget constraints. I was considering doing ethical research on werewolves so the scientists and corporations have less to gain from the unethical kind."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you need help with that? Getting test subjects."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm likely to, I don't think the current environment breads trust in werewolves. But I'm more worried about finding doctors that fall in the tiny overlap of: having the skill set; capable of complying with ethics; bribable; and not prone to go to the media."

Leo would've been so useful here.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some of the immigrants might fit. They already know, and none of us can go blabbing. I could also use Scott's mom, if it comes to that. She'll help me get references without asking a lot of questions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes... Do you want to help me with that, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks. I'd like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm glad to help." More chess happens.

Permalink Mark Unread

Check.

"Do you think-no, never mind."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nothing. I'm just...glad you came."

If Felix can't find a way out, that's checkmate.

Permalink Mark Unread

He can't, hopefully it isn't an ominous checkmate.

"You're a good player."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm a good player. Stiles would be a good player, if he had the patience. It's interesting, knowing you're like- the extra Stiles. There's already a Stiles around, and I can't go back home, back to being Stiles."

He starts clearing the board.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix watches the board being cleared away.

"I feel selfish for wanting to go home."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course you want to go back. I would if I could. But my home was never real, and this place doesn't have a place for me. So I'm finding something else to do. I hope, if you can't go back...you find a place."

He stands, clearing his throat.

"Good game. You should practice for our re- match."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I didn't mean that you should feel the same. I'm sorry if came out that way." Felix says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's fine, I'm not offended. I just hope you can be happy here, while you're here."

He pauses, considering, and places a hand on Felix's shoulder.

"I hear this is a comforting gesture. Feedback?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...It helped a little?"

"Maybe a hug would be better?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.

Slightly stiff and uncomfortable hug.

Hug all the same.

Permalink Mark Unread

A hug all the same does improve a lot, Felix actually relaxes into it and Sky is enveloped by Felix's wings and it is like being hugged by a soft and warm feathery blanket.

Permalink Mark Unread

Abort, abort, enjoying hug too much.

He unhugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, are you guys done playing symbolic chess?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, we are. Nice seeing you again, Felix."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome, Sky." Then to the other two. "how are you two holding up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're okay. How did it go with Sky?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Suprisingly well, actually. He... said that the sheriff and Ms. McCall can talk to him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. Okay, that's good. That is good, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It indeed is. I hope talking with the Sheriff won't be awkward."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My dad won't be a problem. He might be."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Stiles, he's you!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sky quietly walks away.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sigh. "I wasn't going to ask Sky this - not that I want to undermine Stiles' feelings - but why you two behave around each other like that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Like what?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Like you two are someone that you wouldn't want to be around with."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't want to be around him, he doesn't want to be around me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Identical reactions are expected. The actual issue is that you distrust each other. And in a way that implies something more than fear the other will take or get something you both want."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If he's anything like me but we have different goals, then I can't trust him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why not? That is not a bad reason, but I want to understand why."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, you kind of ask a lot of questions. Scott?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Um. He means that Sky has the same personality but a totally different history, so they're putting the same thoughts and strategies to get different priorities."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Getting information is important to optimize for your goals," Felix tells Stiles neutrally, "and thank you for explaining, Scott. Does having the same thoughts and strategies mean you two can predict and counter each other?" Felix shakes his head. "This is too much even for me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm pretty sure versions of me don't get along."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which is unfortunate, given the situation."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess. He's going to talk to my dad, so I think he'll be fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Does he already know about the situation?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I filled him in on everything important."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good. Do you need anything from me for now? I should take a nap, conjure Allison's book and try to work out how to translate it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Go ahead. We'll take care of ourselves."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, I will come by later to see how everyone here is doing."

Felix takes his nap, creates a bit of pocket dimension with a radio transmission that includes the Bestiary and some internet updates...

...about an hour later Felix is back and wants the best way to get hold of Allison.

Permalink Mark Unread

Here's her cell phone number.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello, Allison? I want to know if the book is supposed to have a magical effect that grants panlinguism magic to whoever reads it and if you somehow failed to mention that to me or if I'm experiencing some side effect from memory manipulation."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not that I know of. Do you want to come over, my dad can have a look?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course, I will have to make a lot of fog so I can land without being seen, so please don't be alarmed. See you in a bit."

Presuming Allison doesn't protest, Felix will do exactly that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Allison doesn't protest.

"What's going on?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Her father stands further back, observing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix glances at Allison's father, but if he doesn't introduce himself, Felix isn't going to do the same. To Allison he says:

"Well, I copied the book," Felix says waving a tablet he brought, "and when I tried to read it... I could understand just fine, except I've never learned Latin. So I tried other languages and I can read, understand and speak each one of them like it was native. I did not possess this ability the last time I was confronted with a language I've never learned and this isn't a usual occurrence back in my original universe." Pause. "I'm very confused."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That doesn't usually happen. I don't think the book is magical at all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is it something your magic can do at all? I'm afraid of somehow having my memories tampered with. It would be possible but inconvenient to get them back."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mental tampering has been known to happen."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was informed of the possibility. You're Mr. Argent, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am. A pleasure to meet you, despite the circumstances."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am Felix Dalkaila. The circumstances aren't really the best. Sorry for coming to your home all the suddenly," Felix pauses to think, it would do no good if this man thought a werewolf mind-erased Felix even if it turns out to be true. "the whole language business is weird to explain but so harmless and my form of immortality will handle any memory tampering. So it isn't that big of a concern, just confusing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I'm still concerned, but I can let you handle it, if you'd prefer."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, I would rather not impose that onto you." Please read that as a polite way of saying that you should staying of this. "Since I'm already here, I could answer your questions, but if it is an inopportune time, I can always come back later, I have a lot of time in my hands."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you're offering, I wouldn't minded hearing about your immortality. How hard is it to share?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't do it. My brother is the one that produces it, but he is in another universe. I don't know enough about the local magic to be certain there isn't a way to share using it, but I would guess it would involve a lot of power or clever exploitation. It also automatically comes with wings and random weather-related powers, making it harder for one to go out in the street without cover." Felix waves at the window, that shows the still foggy outside.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I understand. It was worth a shot. Do you need someone to check for tampering?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have the means to notice future tamperings, and likely the means to reverse this one, but what did you had in mind?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We know a druid who can take a look at you, at least confirm there's no local magic affecting you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If it is no trouble."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No trouble at all. I'll see if I can get her to stop by tomorrow."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, thank you. Will she ask questions about the wings?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, she's one of ours. She'll leave you alone at my request."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Will she be bothered if ask too many questions about local magic?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think she would. Try it and see."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, any more questions? I'm unsure how much you know about my capabilities? I don't know if I interrupted something..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, I think I'll leave you two to talk."

And he does.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't really have anything I'm dying to ask."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Me neither. I didn't even read much from the book, got distracted by the weird translation magic. I could test a couple of things about that with you, but I could do that with Scott's people back in the complex."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry I couldn't be more help about the language thing, but maybe it's some interaction between what you can do and our world's magic? No evil third party involved."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, I mean, I wanted someone to help me test what happens when I try things like saying: Dalkaila, Dalkaila and Dalkaila."

The first "Dalkaila" sounds normal, the second and third... sound normal, but she is suddenly aware that Dalkaila means "Dawn-light island-province".

Permalink Mark Unread

"I got a translation the second time. It's a nice name."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, thank you. I was trying to pack more information the third time I spoke."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, it looks like it worked. Anything else you want to test?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He sings. Can you understand when I use sign language? She can, it is weirder than the speech translation, but only noticeable so.

Then he taps on a nearby surface. Or when I use morse code? It works again.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes to both."

Permalink Mark Unread

"At least it is useful. I have more ideas for testing, but they require better prep or a sample of people with a variety of languages including people that don't have share any languages. Thank you for your help."

Presumably, now Allison will conduct him out.

Permalink Mark Unread

She does.

"Have a good night, Felix."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good night."

Felix flies away and goes home.

His new quiet and lonely home.

At some point the crack of his mask start breaking and he cries for a solid hour before putting himself together. He studies what needs to be studied and decides that tonight he will try searching for werewolves and closely related creatures in proximity of Beacon Hills.

Who would be interested in a list of Beacon Hills resident werewolves and a werecoyote that lives in the nearby forest? Maybe we should visit them?

Permalink Mark Unread

Does he report these findings to Scott?

Scott is confused.

"Werecoyote?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix in fact does report these findings to Scott!

"I read about them and last night tried to find werewolves-and-similar around town and the werecoyote was picked by the radar. They are in fully shapeshifted into coyote, but it is a supernatural person."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Let's get going, whenever you're ready."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm good to go now. Should it be only the two of us? I'm not entirely sure what is the... polite way to introduce oneself to a were-creature."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think we should bring any humans. I'm not even sure you should be there, you're not a...werecreature. But you found them, and I appreciate the help, if you want to come along."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can at least grant you a quick way out if it comes to that. It sounds like an extremely good idea to have me watching from above."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright. I'll go in alone on the ground, and you can be backup. When do we leave?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anytime you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Meet me at my house after school, and we can leave."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very well." They set up a place and location to meet. Felix will be there reading a book.

Permalink Mark Unread

Scott arrives.

"I talked to Deaton about strategy, and I think I know what we can try. I brought backup, just in case."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi. I'm the storm cloud to his ray of sunshine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi, should I address you by that or Isaac is okay?" Felix of course got Isaac's picture and name while breaking the privacy of every werewolf in town.

It is... almost an attempt at a joke, something that he would say with a smile in normal circumstances. Maybe a remark on how attractive every werewolf seems to be or how Felix can control storm clouds... but right now everything like that feels hollow.

"Also, I'm Felix Dalkaila." He says with an even neutral tone.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Isaac is cool too. We ready to leave?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix shrugs. "I'm not entirely sure what is the procedure here besides me following you and providing air back-up in case something goes wrong. I assuming circles of fire would been seen as too hostile?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, we don't want to be seen by too many people. I'll lead, you follow."

And he does.

Permalink Mark Unread

And he follows, by air, but fairly low. Talking distance even.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you know where they are? How much detail did you get?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"My magic generated picture of the area. We should be close. I can recognize their cave if we get inside." Felix shows them the pictures on his phone.

Permalink Mark Unread

As they get closer, Scott checks for unfamiliar scents. Squirrels, deer, rabbits...he doesn't recognize this one.

"I found them. Let's go."

And he walks quietly, carefully, through the woods.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix will keep on flying, which he can do very quietly, he can even make the air not be disturbed by his wing beats.

Permalink Mark Unread

A wild coyote appears!

Permalink Mark Unread

And Felix will keep eye on it, and if it looks like Scott won't manage to stop them Felix will help by making strong winds.

Permalink Mark Unread

Scott does not seem to be stopping it as much as trying to follow it to its den.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, Felix will keep on following and providing weather-support as needed.

Permalink Mark Unread

They follow the coyote to a cave.

She snarls at the intruders, and looks for an exit.

Permalink Mark Unread

They block her path.

Permalink Mark Unread

She bristles, pacing.

She bites his leg.

Permalink Mark Unread

Brief burst of flame. It doesn't touch anyone but gets close enough to be scary. "Calm down. We just want to talk."

Permalink Mark Unread

She growls more.

Permalink Mark Unread

He whimpers, falling to the ground.

"Die, for all I care, see if I come help you next time you need rescuing!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's okay, everything's going to be okay."

He leans in, not too aggressively.

He reaches out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Bite.

Permalink Mark Unread

He reaches out.

He touches her flank.

And he takes away her pain.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix is aware of that werewolf ability, but has no idea what Scott is trying to do with it. He will go over Isaac and see if he needs any help. Since he is in fact injuried an all.

Permalink Mark Unread

The werecoyote seems very confused and not as growly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's okay now, you're going to be okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

He's just going to take a nap now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix will try to make sure that Isaac doesn't bleed out.

Permalink Mark Unread

He doesn't bleed out.

Permalink Mark Unread

And the coyote...

Permalink Mark Unread

...stops being a coyote, and starts being a naked teenage girl.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix didn't had the forethought of bringing something to cover her up. Is not like he needs too many layers to keep himself warm.

"Hello?" Felix says in what he hopes is a soothing voice.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mostly growling and cowering, it looks like.

She grabs Scott's hand, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Scott would prefer to be getting to Isaac now, but accepts her hand.

"Felix, how bad is it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hot sure how fast he will recover from but it doesn't look like he will die."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We will take care of you," he promises the girl, and heads to examine Isaac.

"Try talking to her, if you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

Internally, Felix thinks he is himself a much scarier and less reassuring sight than Scott. Back in his universe, people would take a look at his wings and go "he can control fire with his mind" because his feathers are red instead of thinking "angel with red feathers" or similar and Felix still needs to adapt to the culture of this strange Earth.

Externally, Felix approaches keeping eye contact and moving deliberately slowing so as to not startle the girl.

"Hello? What is your name?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Name?"

She curls up into a ball.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh," Felix says softly, emotion showing in his voice. "I just wanted to know how I'm supposed to call you, we mean no harm."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why?"

She scratches at the ground- with human nails.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Because... it makes conversation easier." Felix tilts his head at the scratching. "Are you alright?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Scott takes away Isaac's pain, and gets to bandaging the wound.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Go away, no, no, bad."

She shakes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...We are sorry, we actually want to help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Leave me alone!"

She bites at the air.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll help you. Whatever you want us to do, we can help."

He kneels down next to her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't, I can't. I'm still like this, I'm still human, let me go!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry. We don't wish to disturb you, but we notice your presence in the area and wanted to make sure you're safe and that you could get our help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Go away!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, we will. Felix, help me get Isaac out of here."

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, this was completely useless. "I'm sorry." Felix says and he helps Scott get Isaac out of there.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you alright? She didn't hurt you, did she?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No she didn't hurt me. Honestly, I think all this managed to do was scare her and hurt Isaac. I'm so sorry, I should've thought of a better way to approach her than try saying 'hello, there is a new powerful individual in town and he wants to help you.'"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You couldn't have known how she would react. She seemed scared of changing back, she must have been in coyote form for a while."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix looks nervously, it greatly contrasts with his new default of neutrality. "She seemed... off. Not sure if the term feral child is correct, but she was reminiscent of that. Do you think there is any problem if I come by later? At least with a change of clothes and food?

Permalink Mark Unread

"You might be better than me or Isaac. I thought having werewolves there would make her more comfortable, but then I did...that. Tell her we'll stay away from her if she wants that. If you can even find her; if she thinks anything like a coyote, she won't go back to that den."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay," Felix says deflated, "should I let her know she can come to you in case she changes her mind? I can't really give her an address."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Give her my address, leave it up to her whether she gets in touch; just be yourself, you're really comforting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright, thank you."

They keep on hauling Isaac away. "Are you going to be able to take him on your bike? Or are you going to wait until he wakes up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bike should be fine, I'll get him to safety. You can watch us if you want, make sure we get there. If it would help you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll follow in case something happens anyway, and it isn't much of a detour since I needed to collect clothes and food for the girl anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks for this. I know you don't like me, but I think it helped her to not feel like I was just taking her whole world away from her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I... you puzzle me Scott, but I don't hate you, I can not express how much I wish the best for you, your friends even for the Argents, it is just..." Felix looks away, "I'm not having an easy time."

Does he eyes look a bit teary? Maybe is just the humidity of the air.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is there anything I can do to help?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix thinks about this and then his face melt into cold neutrality again. "I appreciate the offer. But you shouldn't worry about me. I'll take care of myself myself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tell me if you think of anything."

They lapse into silence until they reach the hospital.

Permalink Mark Unread

Isaac is quietly taken to a room where they can let him heal with both werewolf regeneration and medical attention.

Permalink Mark Unread

That is good, Felix will say hi to Melissa and stay long enough to be sure Isaac is stable.

When he is no longer needed he will go back to his dimension, gather clothes, food and things that might be useful for someone that lives in the woods and then search for the werecoyote again.

Permalink Mark Unread

The werecoyote is nowhere near her den.

There might be signs of her somewhere.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix tries to follows any signs he can find unless it is clear he won't find her until it is dark (He is not willing to call attention by illuminating the way with fire).

Permalink Mark Unread

How good is his eyesight?

He can find tracks, if he looks.

Permalink Mark Unread

His eyesight is 20/20 and can fly close to the ground or simply walk if necessary. He follows the tracks. Are they still human?

Permalink Mark Unread

Human, yes. She's been walking on all fours as best as she can, which isn't very well.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, dear. She must really not be used to human form. Felix keeps following.

Permalink Mark Unread

He'll find her eventually.

It looks like she's trying to hunt.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix will wait a little until the hunt is over or she acknowledges him or something else comes up.

Permalink Mark Unread

The hunt does not go well.

No claws, no teeth, and barely above human speed- she can't catch the rabbit at all. It scampers off.

She spots Felix.

"What?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wanted to check how you're doing and if offer you food and clothes." He points at the bundle he brought.

Absently, he makes the air warmer, since she is still naked in the forest.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't need those! I need to run again, I need paws..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What is happening? Why can't you turn back?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't remember how, that was the first time I did it, when they- when I- I don't remember what I did besides wanting to get away and I do, I do want to leave and never come back."

Permalink Mark Unread

That must have been a strong desire to never come back. "Okay, okay," Felix says agreeable and soothingly, "you don't have to go back. And I know it is my fault that you changed back, but please let me help you. At least until you get the hang of shifting again."

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes the food.

"Thanks. My name's Malia."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome. I'm Felix Dalkaila, I'm... new in town. I met Scott and have been trying to offer my help around."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Scott changed me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm unclear on what happened and I was distracted helping Isaac, but he was the one trying to calm you down."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He did this to me. He's the one."

She picks at her food.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've known Scott long enough that he definitely didn't meant to." Felix really doesn't think Scott can plan things that well. "And he would like to help you out because of what is happened anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't need his help. I can survive on my own, like I had been."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not needing it doesn't mean you shouldn't. It would at least make things easier if you had other to rely on or a place where you can get help, like if you had to run from hunters."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They won't be after me now, since they'll think I'm just a human girl."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was talking about the type of hunter that hunts were-people like you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There are people hunting...werecoyotes?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There are people who hunt werewolves, supposedly only when those werewolves kill innocents, but I don't feel confindent that their judgement is reliable. It was in part why we wanted to meet you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Werewolves?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Scott and his friend are werewolves, there are a bunch of supernatural creatures around."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So they turn into wolves?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They don't turn into full wolves as far I can tell, they just get weird faces and claws, plus some enhanced capabilities."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kind of lame. They should try being werecoyotes."

She prods the bundle of clothes next.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix smiles. "I don't think they have a way of doing that."

The bundle contains camping clothes that are warm and weather-resistant.

Permalink Mark Unread

The girl finally stops being naked.

"Clothes are nice. Warm. How can I get more?"

Permalink Mark Unread

At least she is less likely to die of hypothermia.

"I can give you more. but you might have some trouble keeping them clean, but I have a sort of shelter where you can get them clean."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks. What do you want?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"For you to be safe?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let me rephrase my previous statement: I want people in general to be safe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. You're weird. Should we go to your shelter?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, if you want to. Do you want me to carry you? It's faster by flight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If I could run...okay, fly me."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix takes her bridal style and they fly. "Okay, to actually get there I'll open a portal so we can through" He warns, since he has neglected to tell that before. The portal opens they go through, the complex for Scott's created people is below and they land near the entracy.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So what are you? Werecoyote, werewolves, what else is there?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix leads her inside. "Oh, there are all kinds of supernatural creatures. And I'm even weirder. I'm from a completely different world and I have basically four kinds of magic: I'm a immortal skymage dreamshaper omniglot. I don't even know where the last one came from."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's cool. I think I know what some of those are. Skymage and dreamshaper sound new."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Skymage is someone with a form of hereditary magic that grants wings and some weather-themed powers. Dreamshaping is what allows me to create this pocket dimension, I do that while I sleep."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds cool. What's it like having a pocket dimension?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pretty cool, they're useful."

Anything Malia wants to do first? Take a shower? Eat? Does she wants to avoid other people?

Permalink Mark Unread

She will attempt to take a shower.

She mostly figures it out.

After she's done, she can probably just...wear the clothes he gave her?

Permalink Mark Unread

Those are still clean enough, so yes.

Permalink Mark Unread

After she gets changed, she goes looking for her host.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix is taking requests from some of the others that live here, he waves when he notices her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't wave, and stands off to the side.

Permalink Mark Unread

He wraps up with the people and goes over. "Hi again, did the shower help?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Shower helped. Lot of people, here. I don't like it. I want my cave."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Does it have to be a cave specifically? Or just isolated? I could make you a house far away from the complex. Or I can periodically give you resources so you can otherwise live on your own."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you can give me things and I can still live on my own, that would be nice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure thing. Are you comfortable with staying overnight? I won't mind either way but if you don't we should come up with the list of things that you're going to need for at least the next 24 hours and then I will take a nap to conjure them. You can stay here, in the pocket dimension but away from the others," Felix says then pauses, "just to make clear if it doesn't sound like I am not enthusiastic about taking you in, it is mostly that I don't want to pressure you to do anything. I think it might be better for you to have at least occasional human contact, but it is ultimately your choice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Away from the others is fine. Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome." They discuss what Malia is likely to need and how to come by to get more supplies from this person that has been coordinating the complex's needs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Malia will happily discuss her needs.

Can they get her deer? She likes deer, but thinks humans don't usually hunt them.

Permalink Mark Unread

They can get her venison easily. Humans do hunt live dear but getting them alive for her to hunt will be somehow trick and hunting them would be trickier.

It occurs to Felix that Scott's dimension - he has one too, long story - is mostly forest and might be a better hunting ground if Scott is okay letting her in.

Permalink Mark Unread

Malia will accept venison.

She might have more of a response to the other thing if Felix asks her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then he will mention, how foolsih of him not making it clear that he was trying to mention that.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know if I want to be in his dream dimension. Do you trust him?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wouldn't say he is the most logical person I've met..." quite the opposite, "but I can't see him screwing this up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No thanks. Do you know any other werecoyotes? Maybe I can learn from them so I can go back."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, I didn't get the impression they are very common, but I can look into it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Any werewolves besides Scott?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, there is Isaac, the one that you saw yersterday and..." Felix gives her a list.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. I think I should meet Derek, since he's not friends with Scott, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not necessarily? I don't quite think they're enemies and disliking Scott doesn't mean that people will be good or nice to you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe it should. It did as a coyote."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds more of a human way of thinking, actually. Well, I'm not sure how coyotes think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, I mean- enemies were easy. They seem harder now. How do you know who's good?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There isn't really an easy answer for that, but a simple enemy-ally division isn't necessarily better. If Scott was truly your enemy and evil - just Scott being evil, really - the world disaster wouldn't cover it. He would be able to invade anywhere you hid and he can make werewolves."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not saying he's evil or whatever, I just don't want to talk to him."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix thinks about this for a moment and nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So it's okay if I just stay here and don't talk to humans, until I can learn to change back?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course. You're free to do as you wish as long it doesn't harm others."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool, thanks. I'm gonna go now. Have a good day."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You too."

Now what is Felix supposed to do? Oh, right, he was meant to meet that druid to check his head.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mr. Argent will be waiting for him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, right. That is too be expected. Felix can feel his face settle into neutrality... did he get a Pavlovian response to these people in this short time?

He greets Mr. Argent and whoever else is there.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Felix, good to see you again. This is a family friend, I thought she would have some input."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello, Felix. I hear you need some help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. It is a weird problem. I recently acquired the ability to speak any language." Felix says, then he repeats the phrase switching languages between words, he is fully understandable. "I have no idea how that happened and have no way to formulate an hypothesis, I would like to check for memory tampering in case I acquired the power during a time that was erased."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Interesting. You can acquire powers like this kind of communication without intending to?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix shrugs. "I'm not aware of anyway that I could just grow a power and while I had some unusual circumstances happen recently they don't intuitively scream to me as an explanation."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So you think someone found a way to give you a new power but didn't want you to know? Regardless, I can check for memory loss without knowing the process you're imagining."

She approaches him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was thinking someone wanted to erase the time period and me getting the power just happened to be in the middle of it."

He lets her approach.

Permalink Mark Unread

She checks for stolen memories, for ill-hidden gaps, for broken connections between thoughts.

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't find any. His mind is squick clean of any memory tampering that is detectable by her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thankfully, there are no signs anyone has been here. I can't help you much beyond that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're sure?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"His memory is all his own."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sigh. "Thank you, and sorry for wasting your time... I could give something to repay you - either of you - for inconvenience."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't worry about me. And there's not much you can give him, now. His wife and sister are dead, he's always unhappy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay." That was an extremely intimate thing to say on behalf of someone else.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was nice meeting you, Felix."

She takes her leave.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry about that. Worth a try, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"True. So far this power has being completely innocuous, it is just confusing that it showed up at all. Anything you would like while I'm still here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think so. Sorry I couldn't do more. Goodbye, Felix."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Goodbye, Mr. Argent."

Felix returns home and in the absence of anything better to do he sleeps or at leas the tries.

He tosses and turns for a while. This house is so lonely, he considers bundle up with a bunch of pillows and blankets, but it is not like that is what he is missing. Sleepless Felix decides to fly for a while. But knowing the stars aren't the same as the stars of his universe it only makes him more restless.

After an hour of that he finds himself above the complex and can't stop himself of landing and just walking around the place, knowing there are people behind the doors isn't exactly soothing but helps.
