I think they're scared of me.

oh. right. not the only mutie at school anymore.

Into the cafeteria they go. It smells like french toast.

scary girlfriend's less bad.

Besides, I was trying to scare them.

Getting in line now.

yeah. it's just, uh, sometimes scared (a group of boys shrieking and running, whispering in the hallways later) looks a lot like scared (a boy stepping very quietly down the stairs hoping nobody will hear him leave his room).

...Yeah.

Armhug.

Armhug helps.

kind of nice to be able to do images like that.

There's a group of girls nearby pointing and whispering.

I wonder what they're reacting to, Edie says, noticing them.

not sure. it's kind of hard to tell but i don't think it's me. ...you could check, right? but that's kind of invasive.

Yeah. Curiosity is not, alas, justification for that kind of privacy invasion.

nope.

One of the girls mimes gagging. He shoots her a look.

Food is acquired. He heads for the nearest empty table, as always.

Emily notices that the curiosity is actually really bugging Edie and decides to take matters into her own hands.

She walks over to the girls.

"Hi. Does one of us have spinach in our teeth or something?"

Most of them seem a little stunned that they've actually been approached directly.

After a moment, one girl (a dishwater blond with a little gap between her front teeth) shakes her head.

"Oh, I mean, no offense to you or anything, I'm so sure you're great, but did you hear about what those two did?"

"I would like to hear what you heard they did."

They all start talking over each other.

"I heard that she–"

"–taped him up on the wall–"

"–I heard she let her boyfriend–"

"–made him go through the quad naked, and–"

"–one of them walked in front of a bike–"

"–maybe the whole campus–"

"Would you like to hear what actually happened?"

They go quiet.

"Um...yes?" says one of them.

"A bunch of guys assaulted her boyfriend, they had him on the ground and were kicking him and had already broken a rib when she walked in, and she made them stop.

The part about taping someone to a wall's true, I admit, it was supposed to be incentive to not attack people."

The reactions are mixed.

A couple of the girls look shocked, some suspicious, one completely appalled. There's one or two who look uncomfortable in a very telling way. You can't exactly say "so?" in a situation like this.

Emily returns to her sister and Z and reports the contents of the conversation quietly.

"...wow. Bullshit travels pretty fast here, too."

"I mean, those jerks were pretty motivated to spread it."

"Yeah, true."

He drums his fingers on the table.

"There's gonna be some weird shit floating around by next week, though."

Shrug. "Let it."

"More for my collection, I guess."

"Well now I'm curious."
