the fires of change
female Nova gets dropped on the X-Men
Permalink Mark Unread

It takes her too long to realise she is pregnant. (She supposes, in the end, it shouldn't surprise her.) She doesn't know who the father is (one of the men in the church), but she takes it to their leader anyway (what else is she supposed to do? They'd notice eventually). His reaction is almost predictable. She doesn't expect his vehement opposition to her child even truly being a person. She can't stand the idea of them hurting her child (they are good, even now, before they're born she knows that, not like her, she deserves everything), if they even let her keep it (she knows they don't agree with that, not normally, but...but he had said her child was nothing more than a parasite).

She is dismissed with only minimal punishment. (It might be her fault for tempting the men, but he seems distracted.)

She can't stay here. She knows that. Not with the child growing inside her, it's too much of a risk. So, she does something she never would've thought herself capable of. She takes what little she can carry, and runs. (And if the church catches fire as she slips out in the middle of the night, she tries not to feel bad that she can't control it, that she's damned and dangerous, but she needs her child to be safe.)

Trying to survive out on the streets is...not easy. Begging gets her very little, and she's not brave enough to try stealing (she can't risk getting caught). She manages to keep herself alive, but... She knows she needs more information on pregnancy, and knows she needs more food than she's getting. (And if there's a few more fires in abandoned buildings, or in alleys, she's always cleared out well before anyone can find her, what little control she has keeps getting shakier.)

It leaves few options. She doesn't want to do this, but she knows she can (it's not like people haven't made assumptions already). And she needs to be able to stay alive, if only so her child makes it. (She doesn't have a choice.)

Edie's control is all but perfect. She hasn't read a mind she didn't intend to since she was eight. But perfect control only means she doesn't read the contents of minds, it doesn't mean she doesn't observe them existing. And it's useful to skim the surface emotions of the people around her, shallowly enough that nothing connects itself to any specific person--

But she is the daughter of Professor X and Magneto, and a future teacher at the school, and her parents aren't here, so when she feels a point of distress so severe that she can't help but connect it to the mind in question, and it's a mutant mind, it is very much her business. She makes her excuses to the teacher who brought them here (Papa and Dad will understand; better not to get anyone else involved before she knows more), peels off from the group and all but sprints to where the distressed mutant is.

It is not a nice part of town, but no one tries to bother her who she can't take care of without too much distraction.

She knocks.

Permalink Mark Unread

The door is jerked open, not by the mutant, but a man, who doesn't look all that happy at being disturbed.

The mutant is in the room, on her knees, staring almost blankly at the door. She's shaking, and terrified (nothing has happened yet), and confused about why anyone was even knocking. (She needs the money, even if she doesn't want this.)

(The man has no intention of paying.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Well.

Shit.

The man can be unconscious and go stand in that corner over there, that's a good lad. Well, no, he's terrible, but he can at least be less inconveniently terrible.

"Hey. I'm not going to ask if you're alright, but--how bad is it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't understand the question. It's...it's not bad? Is it? She could've lost her child, (she would've if she'd stayed). This is better (isn't it?).

"I-" she doesn't look at the woman directly, is only aware that the man isn't coming near her again. "I just need the money," she says eventually, curling in on herself. (She can feel the flames starting to flicker under her skin, clenches her fists tight to try and stop them escaping.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She looks at her again.

"How old are you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She flinches slightly, but...

But you answered questions when you were asked them, and you didn't lie. "Fifteen." (It isn't a lie, she nearly is.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Well, congratulations, I'm an unofficial representative of the Xavier Institute for Gifted Youth, and you are hereby invited."

Permalink Mark Unread

Her gaze briefly jumps to the woman's face, confused, startled (still scared, still not sure). "...not gifted?" she says (barely has an education to speak of). She has no idea what the Xavier Institute even is, and that shows.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a school. For mutants, like you and me."

Permalink Mark Unread

But- But even if they're both mutants, this woman isn't like Blaze. (Flames flicker over the back of her hand.)

And even if they will take her, she has no (one) way to pay for this. "Price?" she asks. (Everything has a price.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She sits down beside her.

"Once upon a time, there was a lonely little boy named Charles who could hear what people were thinking. Charles lived in a very big house, and had lots of toys, but he was very sad, because nobody loved him. It was a very big house, but the only other people there were servants, who saw him as nothing but a job to do, and his mother, who had only had him because his father, now dead, wanted it, and who was most often to be found at the bottom of a bottle. Charles knew all these things, no matter how people smiled at him, because he was a mutant telepath, and at that age, not hearing what people are thinking is difficult.

One day, Charles was woken in the night by a sound. He went down to the kitchen to find someone wearing his mother's face, but he knew it wasn't his mother, and told them so. She shrank down to a little girl, even younger than he was. She had been looking for something to eat, you see, because her parents threw her out because her skin was blue and scaly and she could change her shape. She said her name was Raven, and he adopted her as his sister and told her he would never have to steal to eat again.

Charles wasn't lonely anymore, and Raven wasn't hungry, but they never forgot. When they grew up, they found more of their kind--our kind--and started the school, so no mutant child would have to be hungry or lonely again. Not if they could help it. And they can't, always, they can't find everyone who needs them--but when we do find them, we try to bring them home.

Anyway, don't worry if your powers are hard to control, my friend Scotty has eye lasers he can't turn off, so they invented him special goggles. Whatever's hard to deal with about your power, we can figure something out."

Permalink Mark Unread

That...sounds. Wonderful. And- (not real.)

And maybe it would be somewhere she could... One hand rests on her stomach. Whatever the price is (and there has to be more of one than she's being told), it'll be worth it if her baby is safe.

She doesn't really have many other options. But... "if I say no?" (She doesn't think it's an option, saying no never is, but she...wants to hear it.)

The flames on her hand surge.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then I pick that guy's pocket, give you all the cash he had on him, and send him away. He wasn't planning to pay you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Her hands come up to grasp at her hair, tugging a little harshly. (She can't even get this right, how stupid does she have to be?)

The flames on her hand twist around her head (and it's unclear whether she's trying to hurt herself, or whether the flames are trying to provide some measure of comfort).

"If I say yes?" her voice is shaky, brittle, and almost entirely helpless.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then I call someone to come get you, and they get you settled in at the school and make sure you get decent prenatal care and talk to you about your options. I can stay if you want or go if you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

She's silent for a moment, part of her trying to gauge what the right answer here is, but...

But she doubts she'll be able to get access to any prenatal care on her own. (She wants to be a good mum.)

"Please?" she says eventually, somehow both hesitant and desperate. (She'll deal with the cost when it comes to it, it'll be worth it, no matter what it is.) "I- I can-" she doesn't even know what she was going to try and offer, to not take up space, to help around the school (there must be chores that need done), anything.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's okay," she says. "--Do you want a hug?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She can't even answer that. She doesn't (really) want to be touched. But...she's seen how other people are comforted by hugs, can't help but wonder if...(if not every contact had to hurt, one way or another.)

She shrugs, because she doesn't know.

Permalink Mark Unread

...She leans over and tentatively settles an arm around the other girl's shoulders.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's tense, waiting for something...worse.

But this isn't bad. She doesn't exactly relax, but she leans slightly into the contact. (It's almost pleasant.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She wraps her arms around her in a proper hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

She flinches at the motion at first, and then let's herself lean a little more into it.

Then she's crying (it's all too much, and everything is starting to catch up with her). She manages a barely-coherent apology (she can't imagine the other girl likes being cried on by a complete strange, never mind someone like Blaze).

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie strokes her hair gently and makes soft comforting noises.

Permalink Mark Unread

That stirs some barely-remembered memory, from when she was very young, of someone holding her like this. It makes her cry harder, but not exactly in a bad way.

Eventually, her sobs die down, and she's just waiting, too exhausted now to even really think straight, or actually pull away.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie continues hugging her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you," she says quietly, still making no move to withdraw. "I- what now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I see if I can figure out where to find a pay phone without stopping hugging you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, she actually knows the answer to that.

"There's one on the corner of the street," she says quietly. "About five minutes from here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She beams at her. "Thanks, that'll save me some time. Are you up to getting up and walking or should I get my sister to come over here and call?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- I can move," she says - not entirely certain of that fact, but she's already somehow interrupted one person's day, it wouldn't be good to do that to another person. She'll manage.

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes one look at her face and says, "I'll get my sister, it's fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

She flinches and goes tense again. "No, I can, you don't need to-" (she's such an inconvenience), "please, I can."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's fine," she says soothingly. "You're pregnant, you shouldn't move if you don't feel like you should, what if something happens to the baby?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She stops arguing there, one hand resting on her stomach again. There's a bolt of panic at the idea of harming her baby, and she shakes her head slightly. "You- I- I don't want to harm them," she sounds surer about that than she has about anything else. (She's still unsettled about someone else being inconvenienced, but her concern for her child wins out.) "Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's fine. This is what we do." (She pings Emily and summarizes the situation. Emily excuses herself and starts heading over.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She breathes out slowly, and takes a moment before drawing another breath in. (It helped her stay calm sometimes.)

"I- can I- know your name?" she makes herself ask. "I- you don't. S'fine if you don't."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm Edie. What's yours?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- Blaze," when they bothered to call her anything other than 'girl'. (She liked it as well.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, that's pretty."

Permalink Mark Unread

She ducks her head a little - more shy than scared - her skin colouring slightly. No-one's ever said anything like that before. "Thank you," she murmurs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome."

Permalink Mark Unread

She falls silent, hand still resting on her stomach, fingers tracing gentle circles. She doesn't really have any idea what else to say - it's not like she's ever really had much reason to try and hold a conversation.

Permalink Mark Unread

After a little while Edie says, "I can feel the baby, if you want me to show you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-you can?" she sounds almost excited (like she's trying to hide her excitement). "I would...like that? Please?" she says, almost eager. Then she bites her lip, realises... "If it's...not too much trouble?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not the slightest bit of trouble," she says, and--shows her.

It's a sense completely different from the ones she already has, and there is a vague impression of her own mind, grown and complex, alongside the tiny, simple, loving spark that is the baby's largely unformed mind.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a little disorienting at first, but then there's a look of complete awe on her face, she's hadn't even...

It's incredible, feeling that. Feeling her baby's mind. (She already loved them, but now it feels more.) She'd been right, her baby was a person, and that's enough to make her smile, just a little bit.

"Thank you," she says, again, Edie is giving her so much (she'll worry about the price of this later, right now she's too focused on what she's being shown).

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're very, very welcome."

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze stays where she is, feeling at the very least content, maybe a little happy, and almost safe. Which is strange, to not feel like she's on the verge of doing something wrong, of the inevitable punishments. She lets her eyes close, she's so tired. Maybe Edie won't mind if she just sleeps for a little while?

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie will definitely not mind if she sleeps for a little while.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then she will sleep, a little restlessly. With how exhausted she is, she'll probably sleep until something wakes her up.

Permalink Mark Unread

Will she wake up if someone picks her up?

Permalink Mark Unread

She will, flinching, and trying to get away, flames unintentionally bursting off her skin. (Although she manages to stop them fairly rapidly.)

She goes still (as much as she wants to keep trying to escape). "sorrysorrysorry," she babbles. (It never helped.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's fine!" a girl says. "I was just trying not to wake you, I'm sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

She blinks at little, not having expected another new person, and at the apology (no-one bothers apologising to her). She looks around for Edie (although her gaze never really makes it past knee level). "I-s'fine?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie is right here.

"This is my sister, Emily. Sorry, the car arrived and we didn't want to make you wake up to get in it."

Permalink Mark Unread

She relaxes a little when she sees Edie, and a little more when she speaks.

When the car is mentioned, she bites her lip (she agreed to this, but she's still scared about what's going to happen next), and manages to get (somewhat unsteadily) to her feet. "S'fine," she repeats quietly, waiting for some further instruction.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie wraps an arm around her shoulder, half to comfort her and half to make it easier to walk.

The car is just outside, there is a man who looks like Edie sitting in the driver's seat and looking at all three of them with concern.

Permalink Mark Unread

She leans a tiny bit against Edie (it does make walking easier).

She flinches when she see the man, and shrinks further into Edie's side, almost trying to hide.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's my dad, he won't hurt you. I wouldn't let him if he tried, which he won't," she says, hugging her a little tighter.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze doesn't pull away, or really relax, but she seems at least a little reassured. (Anyone who raised someone as nice as Edie couldn't be that bad, she doesn't think.)

She'll let herself be guided towards and into the car, but doesn't seem entirely capable of moving without someone encouraging her to.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie is absolutely capable of guiding her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then she will be guided. She seems unfamiliar with cars (whenever she'd been taken out before, they'd always walked, and when she ran on foot had been her only option). She'll try to stay as close to Edie as she can, the other girl feeling the safest of these new people.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can sit right next to Edie in the back seat.

Permalink Mark Unread

That seems to help her relax a little, and she leans into Edie. If no-one tries to speak to her, she's probably going to drift off into sleep again. (It's been a while since she's had a chance to sleep without one eye open.)

Permalink Mark Unread

No one talks to her.

Eventually they will get where they're going and the car doors will open again.

Permalink Mark Unread

She flinches awake again, but is a little less panicky this time, more startled and a little disoriented.

She looks around herself, trying to get an idea of her surroundings (and also of what she's supposed to do next).

Permalink Mark Unread

They are outside a rather large building in a mildly castle-ish style surrounded by a large lawn, and then trees.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh. Wow. That is...big. And a little intimidating. (And pretty.) And parts of it look far too flammable (she doesn't want to do anything that might make them think she's too much trouble).

She swallows thickly, before sliding out of the car. Unguided this time, but still not entirely steady. (Her hands have flames flickering off them, and she folds them together, half trying to stop it, half trying to hide it.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, is that what you do? Fire? It's lovely."

Permalink Mark Unread

She flinches again when he speaks to her, looks at her hands. (She'd always thought her flames were pretty before...)

"Yes sir," she agrees. Then, hurried: "I can control it better, I promise." (The way the flames on her hand leap as she speaks don't suggest her words hold as much truth as she would like.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't worry. You should have seen Alex when he was just starting out."

Permalink Mark Unread

She isn't entirely sure how to respond to that, and settles for a slightly lost: "Yes sir."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Da~ad, you're scaring her. Let me handle it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright. I'll see you later. Love you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Love you too, Dad."

Permalink Mark Unread

He leaves, ruffling Emily's hair as he walks past.

Permalink Mark Unread

It isn't obvious that she's watching the interactions, but she is. They confuse her a little, the casual seeming affection, the lack of any fear at challenging an authority figure (telling their father what to do), and him acquiescing.

She twists her fingers together, looks between Edie and Emily. "I- what now?" (She doesn't exactly like asking, but she hates not knowing.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Well, we need to find you a room, first thing, probably. One with room for a cradle and stuff."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I-" she bites at her lip. "Don't need-" much, a room, a bed, she'd made do with a mattress in a corner back at the church, and wherever she'd been able to hide while she'd been on the streets.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...You've seen how huge this place is, right? There is going to be absolutely no trouble getting you a room."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- sorry. Okay," she looks up at the mansion again. It is big. (There must be so many places she can hide.) She'll still wait for Edie or Emily to lead the way - she doesn't know the rules yet.

Permalink Mark Unread

"--It's fine. We'd find you a room even if it wasn't huge."

Permalink Mark Unread

She blinks a little, and then nods. It still doesn't make sense to her, why strangers would be this good to someone like her. (There has to be a price.)

"Thank you," she says instead of anything else. (And there is nothing there except genuine gratitude, because they didn't have to do any of this and they have anyway.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome. Do you have any preferences?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She shakes her head. She's never really thought about what she'd want if she had a room. Wouldn't say she did even if she had, that they're giving her a room at all is enough. (It would be nice to be somewhere out of the way, she thinks, maybe be able to see the grounds.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Do you want to see some possibilities and pick?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- I'll be fine wherever you put me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure you will. But it will help me decide if I know what you think, and there are plenty of options."

Permalink Mark Unread

"O-okay," she agrees quietly. (If it'll help, she'll try.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie loops an arm around her shoulder again and takes her around to see empty rooms, mostly out-of-the-way ones with views of the grounds. There are options on several different floors, and a couple of them have balconies.

They pass a lot of kids in the halls, some of them walking, some running, some alone and some in groups, some looking perfectly baseline and some with very visible mutations.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's not good at providing preferences, although she does try. However, she definitely seems to prefer the ones on lower floors, and while the ones with the balconies catch her attention, she flinches away from the idea of taking that much.

Her reaction to the kids is mostly to shrink a little into Edie's side again (too many new people), although there is no discernible difference in her response to those who appear baseline and those who have visible mutations.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie picks a room for her on the second floor with a balcony.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I-" She wants to argue, because this is too much. (But she didn't decide. Edie did. Surely that makes it okay?) "Thank you," she says instead. "I. Thank you." She manages to stop herself from saying that several more times as she looks around the room. (Still next to Edie.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie hugs her. "You deserve this, okay? You've been through a lot of awful stuff, but things get to be better now."

Permalink Mark Unread

The idea of deserving this feels wrong. (She hasn't done anything to earn it.)

She presses her eyes shut as she leans into the hug (and cautiously wraps her arms around Edie in return). It hadn't been that bad, really (had it?), she hadn't liked what had happened, and she hadn't liked being hurt, but... She needed to be disciplined when she messed up, and she had owed them (they hadn't had to give her a roof over her head).

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know what happened to you," she murmurs, "but any situation that leaves you a pregnant runaway at fifteen is not one anyone deserves. Ever."

Permalink Mark Unread

She shudders slightly. "They were going to-" she starts (because she's convinced now that that was what they were going to do). "They said it was a sin, but they were going to make me. And I couldn't let them." (She doesn't know why she's saying this to Edie, but she couldn't have stopped the words falling from her mouth if she tried.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's evil of them," she says firmly. "I don't know who they is, but I can say with high confidence that they were bad people."

Permalink Mark Unread

She starts to shake her head, because: "They looked after me," she insists. "I just- I couldn't let them do this. She's done nothing to them!" (But there's some doubt to her insistence now, because that they would want her baby dead before she was even born feels wrong to her, especially when she knew they thought abortion was a sin.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"The fact that they raised you does not entitle them to do whatever they want to you," she says firmly. "If they told you it does, they didn't say it because it's true, they said it because they wanted to do whatever they wanted without you knowing you're entitled to decent treatment. Maybe they thought it was true, but if so they thought it because they were evil, not because it is."

Permalink Mark Unread

She bites at her lip. Edie sounds so sure about that. (But if that's true, then...)

She shudders again, and her arms tighten slightly before she realises she's practically clinging to Edie and she makes herself loosen her grip. "I- okay," she agrees - she doesn't sound entirely convinced.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can hug me as tight as you want, I'm not going to break."

Permalink Mark Unread

Her arms tighten again and she finds herself crying again. (She's not normally this prone to tears.) This is all just too much, and Edie's being too nice.

(Through her tears she's alternately managing apologies for crying, and 'thank yous' for just...being there.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie hugs her and murmurs soothing nonsense and pets her hair.

Permalink Mark Unread

It takes less time for her to stop crying this time, perhaps more because she's run out of tears than the fact that she's really done crying. She stays leaning against Edie, knowing that at some point she needs to ask what happens next (wants to know what to expect), but half-hoping she can just...not have to deal with it for a little bit longer. (And Edie is warm, and comforting.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie guides them over to the bed so they can cuddle sitting down instead of standing up.

Permalink Mark Unread

She goes tense when she realises where she's being guided (was this the price?), but she still goes pliantly. And being off her feet would be nice.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie stops the instant Blaze goes tense. "Are you okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes?" she doesn't sound at all certain. "I. Did you. Want something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"--I just thought it would be more comfortable to hug sitting down."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...oh." That hadn't been an option she'd thought about. And...it probably would be. "I- probably?" (She doesn't really have enough experience with hugs one way or the other to know.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"What did you think--oh. No. I wouldn't do that to you."

Permalink Mark Unread

She flinches slightly. "Sorry. I-" She isn't even sure why she's apologising (except she got something wrong, but she doesn't know exactly how that assumption was wrong, even if Edie's saying she wouldn't.)

Permalink Mark Unread

More hairpets. "It would be a seriously awful thing to do to try to have sex with you right now. For anyone."

Permalink Mark Unread

That gets complete confusion. "...Why?" She flinches slightly, apparently she hadn't actually meant to ask that.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Because you've been hurt and you obviously don't want it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

That doesn't seem to help with her confusion, if anything, it makes it worse. What she wanted didn't matter, not when she owed people as much as she did. "N-no other way to-" (pay people back).

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course it matters. It always matters."

Permalink Mark Unread

She's trembling now. "But why?" the question is desperate, wanting this new information to somehow make sense with what she'd been told before.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Sex is something--intimate. Having it when you don't want it--it hurts people, very badly. Having sex with someone against their will is called rape, and rape is a very evil thing to do."

Permalink Mark Unread

The trembling intensifies, and Blaze is suddenly intensely aware of the flames underneath her skin, and pulls away quickly. (She doesn't want to burn anyone.)

"It wasn't," she insists (just because she hadn't wanted it, didn't mean she hadn't asked for it).

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. I'm not saying it definitely was. But--even if someone says yes, if they're not doing it because they want it, it can still hurt them, and you shouldn't do it if you notice that they don't."

Permalink Mark Unread

There's flames flickering over her hands again. She swallows thickly. "O-okay." (Edie seems so sure about this, but it still doesn't fit quite right in her head.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"So. We should probably get linens and switch out the mattress."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- the, the mattress is fine," she says (it will be), but she isn't going to argue with linens (it might be selfish, but she doesn't like being cold).

Permalink Mark Unread

"...The mattress that's currently on that bed isn't fireproof."

Permalink Mark Unread

She blinks. "You have...fireproof ones?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You think you're the only fire hazard in the school? Yeah, we have fireproof mattresses, and sheets and pillows and blankets and so on. And clothes."

Permalink Mark Unread

She shrugs a little. "Hadn't...thought about it," she admits quietly. "I- Didn't realise it was possible." (She'd gotten used to the consequences of accidentally burning things.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was actually less inconvenient to do the R&D than to keep replacing stuff that got burned."

Permalink Mark Unread

That does make sense. (And something in her relaxes knowing that she won't be damaging anything that needs replacing.) "I- can I help?" she offers quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

That seems to make her relax a little as well - knowing that she's not just letting other people do these things. The flames on her hands have died down again as well. "Thank you," she says.

She'll follow Edie's guidance again to wherever they need to go.

Permalink Mark Unread

There is a huge storage room with a whole bunch of bedding stuff in it. Edie leads her there.

"Do you have any aesthetic opinions on the sheets and blankets? It's fine if you don't, but it's no more bother to take a prettier one over a less-pretty one."

Permalink Mark Unread

She thinks about it, and then shakes her head. Then, it's not an aesthetic preference but... "Warm?" she requests very quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course. Here, these sheets look pretty cozy, and that's a very warm blanket over there...you carry these and I'll get the mattress? I think I read somewhere that pregnant women aren't supposed to carry heavy things."

Permalink Mark Unread

She almost argues, but if she's not supposed to (if it might hurt her baby), she won't, and she's not entirely sure she could anyway. So she'll take the sheets and blanket with a nod, and another quiet 'thank you'.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome. It's not seriously inconvenient, if it were I'd ask someone telekinetic to deal with it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh," she says again. (She keeps forgetting that there's other people like her here, who can do useful things.)

Back to the room?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep. Edie hauls the old mattress off the bedframe and pushes the new one onto it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze immediately sets about making the bed up with practised efficiency - apparently this is a chore she is very familiar with. It won't take her long to be done. (Although at one point she hesitates, slightly light-headed.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you okay? --Shit, when was the last time you ate?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze can't immediately answer that question, and is almost automatically flinching at that. "Yesterday?" she sounds almost like she's guessing. "I needed the money," she repeats what she'd said earlier in the room. "I tried, but."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, the bed looks fine for now, let's get some food in you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Her fingers twitch a little, like she needs to finish with the bed, but... She is hungry.

"Please?" she agrees, going to follow Edie.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Definitely," she says, and leads her down to the kitchen, and explains that she's been literally starving and let's not invoke refeeding syndrome, and acquires for Blaze situationally appropriate amounts of miscellaneous tasty foods.

Permalink Mark Unread

She stares at the food, because it is still more than she's ever been handed at once before, or perhaps just more varied? She's not sure.

She looks up at Edie, needing to make sure this is right, that this isn't some kind of trick.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Go on," Edie encourages her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then she'll eat, trying to eat slowly (not really succeeding very well), one arm curled to protect the plate from anyone who might try to take it off her. (She's watching anyone who moves around her.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie observes this and moves to hover behind her so if anyone tried to take the food they'd have to deal with her first before Blaze.

Permalink Mark Unread

It doesn't take her long to feel full. She frowns at what's left - it's not much, but it's still wasteful, and she doesn't want to seem ungrateful.

Permalink Mark Unread

"--We have a compost pile, anything you don't eat won't go to waste."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- I'm full," she admits. "I- thank you. It was. Good." (It was, she's pretty sure, the best meal she's ever had.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm glad. Let me know when you feel hungry again, alright? You definitely need to work your way up to eating bigger meals, for the baby's sake. But doing it too fast would be worse."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, resting one hand briefly on her stomach, before gathering up her plate, intent on clearing up her mess.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie shows her where dishes go.

Permalink Mark Unread

Being able to do something does seem to help her relax, make her feel like she's at least doing something towards being given all of this.

She looks at Edie. "I. You said. Something about someone talking to me?" She thinks she remembers that being a thing. (And she feels like she's put this off long enough.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. I could probably do that, if you felt more comfortable, or I could find someone more official."

Permalink Mark Unread

She shrugs. "I- whatever's easiest?" (She thinks she would prefer Edie, but if Edie's there, she's not going to mind either way.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. I can do it. Let's go somewhere more private."

Permalink Mark Unread

She follows Edie again (she's looking around as she does, mapping where she's been taken and how things link together, and looking for hiding places that people might overlook).

Permalink Mark Unread

There sure are some of those.

Edie takes her to a quiet window nook overlooking the lawn; private enough that they won't have dozens of involuntary eavesdroppers, but public enough that if Edie tried anything there would be witnesses.

Permalink Mark Unread

She likes the nook, likes the view over the lawn. She looks cautiously at the seating and takes a step towards it before stopping to look at Edie, to check she's okay to sit down.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie smiles and makes an inviting gesture.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze takes a seat, and can't quite stop the relieved sound that escapes her as she settles off her feet.

She looks towards Edie, attentive and waiting.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So," Edie says, sitting down next to her. "What do you want to do with your life?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze shrugs. It's not an easy question to answer. "I- never thought about it. Knew I'd just.." Keep doing chores around the church, serving them as they needed her to. "Now...be a good mum." It's not much of a want, but it feels like everything right now.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay," she says, even though it is absolutely not okay that she's been treated like this so far. "Do you have any opinions on what you want to do in the near future?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She is silent for a moment and then shakes her head. "M'sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's fine. It's absolutely fine. Don't worry about it."

Permalink Mark Unread

She bites at her lip, and then breathes out. "Never had to think about it," she mumbles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know. And that's awful, but the point of you being here now is for things to stop being awful, and that means not penalizing you for the aftereffects of things having previously been awful."

Permalink Mark Unread

This can't be real. (She desperately wants it to be.)

"Okay," she agrees, because she doesn't know what else she can say. Except, again: "Thank you." (Always show gratitude.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're very much welcome," she says. "Anyway, the simplest thing would be to formally enroll you, figure out what you already know, and start you in classes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I-" she curls down on herself. Enrolling her is a waste of time. She knows she doesn't know anything. She can barely read (there wasn't any point in her being taught, she didn't need to know, she'd done her best to teach herself off whatever was around, but...) She wants to learn.

"Whatever's...easiest?" She's terrified that they'll realise she's not worth what they're giving her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...You don't have to do this, but you can. This is what we're for."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I want-" she starts before cutting herself off. (What she wanted didn't matter.) "There's other options?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If a classroom environment isn't right for you, we could do off-the-books tutoring, or if you just want to spend time decompressing or something without having expectations put on you, that's fine too."

Permalink Mark Unread

She isn't used to having any options. Never mind so many. She doesn't know how to make this decision. "I- don't-" She wants to learn, but... (what if she can't?)

Permalink Mark Unread

Gently: "You don't what?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I don't know. What. To do?" She doesn't quite flinch, but she closes in on herself more.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Do you want a hug?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She's still for a moment, and then gives a very small nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie hugs her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze leans into the hug, closing her eyes, and sinking into the (strangely) safe feeling. After a moment, she very quietly, almost inaudibly, says: "They never let me learn."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's because they were evil," she says firmly. "You can learn anything you want to, here."

Permalink Mark Unread

Her breathing hitches a little, (she still can't accept they were evil), but at Edie's words, Blaze clutches at Edie. "Thankyouthankyouthankyou." (She's still not sure she can, just...even being able to try.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie hugs her and pets her hair.

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles a tiny bit, and doesn't seem inclined to move any time soon, not unless Edie seems to need to, or they're disturbed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie doesn't need to go anywhere at all.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's strange, being full, and feeling safe, and not having a list of chores she has to accomplish (there has to be something she should be doing). She has a hand resting on her stomach again, as though she might feel her baby moving.

Permalink Mark Unread

Do you want me to show you again?

Permalink Mark Unread

She's a little startled, hearing Edie in her head, but then she nods eagerly. Please?

Permalink Mark Unread

The baby is so so tiny, and its mind isn't very complicated yet.

But it loves her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She isn't sure how something so tiny, and so good and so pure can love her, and it's overwhelming to feel. But it is incredible, and she silently tries to send back just how much she loves her baby to them, because they need to know, even if they don't know anything else, that she loved them as much as she was able.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie happily transmits this for her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She let's out a breath that manages to sound almost happy, relaxing as much as she is able into Edie. Her baby is incredible already, she just hadn't realised how incredible.

She doesn't say anything out loud, but there's more gratitude and awe directed at Edie.

Permalink Mark Unread

My parents got to do this with me when I was little. I think every person who bears a child should get to have this.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's incredible, Blaze agrees. She feels a little sad that there are parents out there who don't get to feel this.

And in the corner of her mind, a harsh voice (masculine, familiar with its biting disdain and fury) asking why she gets this when so many other more deserving people don't.

Permalink Mark Unread

I wonder what they'll be able to do.

Permalink Mark Unread

She hadn't even thought about that. How likely is it?
That they'll...be able to do something?
She isn't scared of the idea, but she doesn't want her child being told what she was told. (It won't be true of them.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, they definitely will, mutant and non-mutant minds feel different.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her fingers stroke over her stomach, and she quietly hopes her baby's powers are easy to-

It hadn't occurred to her, before, what Edie had been doing knocking on that door. ...you. is that how you-? She tries to keep focused on her baby as much as possible, tries not to think too deeply about what was interrupted, tries to stay calm about this.

Permalink Mark Unread

How I found you? Yes.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's not sure how she feels about that. Mostly...

I- sorry. You had to. See. any of that. And for inconveniencing Edie - picking up a pregnant whore (that's her voice and a dozen other voices whispering in her ear) was definitely not why Edie had been near enough to her to find her.

She continues to try and stay focused on her baby. (She isn't entirely sure Edie will keep letting her feel this.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie continues letting her feel this.

There's nothing wrong with performing survival sex work. There isn't even anything really wrong with doing sex work for non-survival reasons. And it wasn't why I was in range, but it is absolutely why I came any closer than "in range."

Permalink Mark Unread

And she is so grateful for that.

There's definite confusion again, about why Edie would've come any closer. (Although Blaze is obviously trying not to question it, and is definitely grateful she did.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Because you were hurting, and I wanted to fix it.

Permalink Mark Unread

People didn't just do that, especially not for people like Blaze. you shouldn't have bothered, even silently it's a mumble. (And she believes that, even while being selfishly glad that Edie did bother, which make her feel bad.)

Permalink Mark Unread

I just do that. And I'm glad I did.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze leans a little more against Edie, thank you.

What had she managed to do that meant she deserved this?

Permalink Mark Unread

You don't have to do anything to deserve to be okay.

Permalink Mark Unread

But she had been okay. (Hadn't she? Edie seems pretty certain she wasn't.)

Okay, she agrees.

Permalink Mark Unread

Your emotional affect wasn't okay at all.

Permalink Mark Unread

sorry, (that you had to feel that). That...until now, that was the only way she'd been, really. She hadn't-

...but Edie's going to tell her that's bad? Given how she's reacted so far. Blaze tries to hide that train of thought, about not knowing how else to be.

Permalink Mark Unread

You being okay is more important than me not having to notice unpleasant emotions. I wouldn't want to be coddled like that anyway.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh. She doesn't seem to have any other idea how to respond to that, and instead, falls silent.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie continues to hug her.

What do you want to learn?

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze thinks about that, isn't entirely sure of the answer except one thing. I- don't know, she admits. But reading would be nice. (And there's a flush of shame, because as much as she never questioned never being taught, she knew that not knowing at her age wasn't normal.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, of course.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's a little startled by just how easily that's accepted (a little startled no comment's made about her lack of ability).

She presses her lips together. And...know it's not. Academic. But. How to- about pregnancy? And parenting?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah that's important, I should probably take you to the clinic sooner rather than later.

Permalink Mark Unread

They won't make me-? (She doesn't think Edie would let them, but she needs to be sure.) And the idea of people poking and prodding at her definitely doesn't appeal. (It's for your baby, she reminds herself forcefully.)

Permalink Mark Unread

They definitely won't make you.

Permalink Mark Unread

She visibly relaxes at that. I- when? If it has to happen, she'd definitely prefer it to be sooner rather than later (but whenever is convenient is fine, she doesn't want to be a bother).

Permalink Mark Unread

In a little bit, I've let them know about you--we don't have someone pregnant around all the time, so there's some stuff for them to get out of storage.

Permalink Mark Unread

You...have a clinic? Mixed in with that is confusion that a school would have a clinic that could handle someone who was pregnant and concern about them going to that hassle for her (she's not worth it).

Permalink Mark Unread

This is a home as well as a school. I was born here.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh. That. Makes more sense? She thinks. She bites at her lip again. Will you...stay with me?

Permalink Mark Unread

While you're at the clinic? Yeah, absolutely.

Permalink Mark Unread

That definitely seems to comfort Blaze. (Edie wouldn't let them hurt her, she'd said she'd stop her father if he tried) Thank you.

Permalink Mark Unread

You're very much welcome.

Permalink Mark Unread

If there's nothing else Edie wants to discuss right now (she hopes there's not, she's starting to run out if answers except what seems to be the wrong ones), Blaze will continue to lean against the other girl until they have to move.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie will absolutely cuddle her in silence for a while. (And, of course, continue acting as a conduit between Blaze's mind and the baby's.)

Permalink Mark Unread

And she'll have Blaze's gratitude, and awe, and delight, all muddled together with her awe and delight and love for her baby. (Along with a very unfamiliar feeling of being happy, although Blaze can't truly identify that yet.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze does such a good happy. Edie is so glad to be able to do this for her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She (accidentally, completely unconsciously) snuggles a little further into Edie's side. She's distracted enough with her baby that she doesn't even notice.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's so cute!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

She seems content where she is, and for now isn't worrying about anything.

Eventually she'll start getting hungry again, though it's a familiar enough sensation that it doesn't even occur to her to tell Edie about it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie is maybe slightly monitoring her autonomics.

"Hungry?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze blinks at the question, and takes a moment to realise-

"I- yes," she ducks her head. "Sorry. I- You said to tell you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's fine. You were distracted by something awfully fascinating."

Permalink Mark Unread

She couldn't deny that if she wanted to. She doesn't want to. (There'd never been an excuse for being distracted before.)

She doesn't seem exactly eager to move, even as she starts to pull away.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie lets go and then stands and offers Blaze her hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze looks up at her cautiously (not really properly looking up at her), and then cautiously reaches out to take the hand, starting to push herself to her feet.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie helps her to her feet.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you," she says quietly once she's on her feet. (She'll continue to wait for Edie to lead the way, she can probably find her way back, but she still doesn't think that she's allowed to.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie leads her back to the cafeteria where they can acquire another suitably-portioned meal for her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Despite Blaze being fairly certain this was the plan, she still can't help but be startled when it actually happens. She's not, however, going to argue, or refuse. (It was strange, actually being full, but it was pleasant, and she wasn't going to pass up the opportunity.) She manages to eat a little slower than before, although she's still wary of anyone taking it off her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie assumes a guard position again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze is a little more aware of that this time, a little more aware of just how much of Edie's time she's been taking up. She stares at her plate. "I- If you have. Something else you...want to do. I'll. Be fine," she says quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I assure you there's nothing more important I could be doing right now than making sure you're okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

That still doesn't feel right. (She is never the most important thing.)

She can't tell if she's full again, or if she's lost her appetite, but either way, she's finished eating, so she'll clear her dishes up, trying not to think too hard about this right now. (At some point, she's going to have to start paying them back.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Well. She'll get it eventually.

The clinic is ready for her not long after.

Permalink Mark Unread

She curls in on herself when she's told that, and moves slightly closer to Edie again. (She knows she has to do this, for her baby, but she's still a little scared of what exactly is about to happen.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie hugs her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She leans into the hug. "You're still- staying with me? Please?" She's shaking slightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Definitely absolutely." Hug hug hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't exactly relax, but she's definitely reassured. "Please?" (can we get this over with.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course," she murmurs soothingly.

The clinic is white and sterile, and contains one person; a man who looks almost like an anthropomorphic blue lion or something.

Permalink Mark Unread

She shrinks into Edie again, trying, a little, to hide behind the other girl. (And while the man looks intimidating, it's more the fact that he's a new person and male than his actual appearance that is causing the reaction - his appearance does in fact get the faintest flicker of curiosity, and his fur looks so soft, and it's a pretty colour.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is Dr. McCoy," she says. It's okay, I'm right here.

Dr. McCoy would like to start by checking her height and weight.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll move pliantly where instructed, trying to keep Edie in her field of vision. She seems a little reluctant to stand up straight to be measured, but does.

She's a little bit shorter than would perhaps be expected for her age, and definitely too far underweight for her height.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dr. McCoy is somewhat alarmed by how underweight she is! She definitely needs to gain weight. Like, a lot of it.

Permalink Mark Unread

She flinches at his alarm, closing her arms in around herself, apologising. (No-one's ever been concerned about her weight before.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not your fault," she tells her firmly. "We just have to fix it, is all."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, a little unsurely. "I- okay."

She waits for the next instruction.

Permalink Mark Unread

The rest of the checkup is not entirely comfy but Edie stays the whole time and hugs her at appropriate moments and at the end she has a prescription for prenatal vitamins.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's definitely relieved when the checkup is finished, and more than a little worn out from just how on edge she's been the entire time. (Edie being there helped, a lot, but didn't make it exactly easy.)

"Um, why?" she asks of the prescription. (It's another thing they're giving her, another resource that could be better used elsewhere, surely?)

Permalink Mark Unread

"...For the baby's health."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh," she says, ducking her head. That- That she can (and will) take. The cost doesn't matter if it helps her baby. "I- thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just take care of yourself, alright?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She blinks, a little startled, and then looks down, confused but somehow touched by the concern (she's not worth it). "I-I will, sir," she agrees, nodding. (She'll try at least.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie hugs her again.

Permalink Mark Unread

She leans into Edie, hugging back. "Thank you for staying," she mumbles, not really caring if she's overheard.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're entirely welcome."

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze manages a small smile. (It's weird, and nice, having her gratitude responded to like that, like it wasn't just a given that she'd be grateful, like Edie was glad to help.)

She doesn't ask if they can leave, waits for Edie to tell her they can, but definitely wants to.

Permalink Mark Unread

They can totally leave. Edie snags a lollipop from the can by the door and offers it to her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She blinks at it, and then looks at Edie in confusion. "...what?" Apparently she hasn't encountered lollipops before, at least not close enough to recognise one when it's handed to her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is a lollipop. It's a piece of candy on a stick." She takes the wrapper off. "D'you want it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She blinks at it again and her fingers twitch slightly. She nods a little hesitantly. (People in the church had eaten candy, although she'd never got to try it, they'd seemed to enjoy it.) "Please?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She hands it over.

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes it, and hesitates before sticking it in her mouth and sucking on it. Her first impression is that it is almost sickly sweet. (She's never really had sugary foods before.) Her second impression is that it isn't, under that, unpleasant, although she can't quite decide if she likes it or not.

"Thank you," she says again. (She somehow feels more genuine in saying that than she did back at the church.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles a little up at Edie (and in the smile is a hint of adoration, because Edie is incredible).

She's part way through the lollipop when she yawns.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie checks the time. "We should probably get you off to bed."

Permalink Mark Unread

She wants, a little bit, to argue, to figure out what they want from her, what she can do. But she's tired. (More tired than she has any right to be given the two naps she's already had today.)

Still, she nods. "Please," she agrees.

Permalink Mark Unread

Back to her room, then, and Edie hugs her goodnight.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze hugs back. "Thank you, for... this. Good night."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're very welcome. Good night."

Permalink Mark Unread

Then Blaze will, after talking herself into getting into bed (which is far too comfortable), sleep.

She wakes up, earlier than even her usual early hour. For a moment, she's completely lost, and a little panicky in her far too nice surroundings. Then she remembers what happened yesterday, and where she is.

She's never been one for being idle (has never had it as an option, really). Once she's had a moment to breathe, she gets up, and leaves the room silently, looking for something that needs doing - cleaning supplies would do, there was always cleaning to do.

Permalink Mark Unread

If she cares to poke around for a while she can find cleaning supplies in a hall closet.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's careful while looking, but she does find the cleaning supplies.

She considers her options. Figures she may as well start with dusting (old building like this, dust probably settles everywhere) and work from there. So she grabs dusting materials and sets to work in the hall she's in, before moving on to other public rooms.

Permalink Mark Unread

There is some amount of dust around but much less than there would be if the building wasn't swarming with children.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well. That'll just make her job easier. (And she is already thinking of the cleaning as her job.) She looks at the floors critically. She doesn't exactly want to wash them (the water wasn't comfortable on her skin), but if they have kids constantly running over them...

Permalink Mark Unread

The floors aren't filthy. Not spotless, but not filthy, either.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her fingers twitch. It's fine, it's fine, it's a school, it doesn't have to be-

(She flinches at the thought of what would happen of she didn't. Can almost hear the yelling.)

Okay. Bucket. Sponge. (It'll be fine.) She needs to find a tap to fill the bucket.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, there are bathrooms.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well. It'll do. She fills the bucket as best she can from the sink, and sets about cleaning the floors. Despite the discomfort every time she dips her sponge in the water, it's strangely meditative to be doing this.

She'll work as methodically at this as she did at the dusting.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually a boy who looks about ten years old with purple hair and webbed fingers finds her.

"Uh, what are you doing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She flinches a little when he speaks. "I- cleaning?" she says, gesturing at the bucket and sponge (she would have thought that was obvious?). She's careful not to stare (no-one liked being stared at), although she's observed his fingers and is quietly wondering if his hair colour is natural.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She looks down. "I-" Shrugs a little. "It needed doing?" (And it was something she could do, that was useful, that might pay them back a little.)

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs. "Whatever floats your boat."

Permalink Mark Unread

She blinks, sits back on her heels. "I- should I not be?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's kinda early in the morning to be doing something like that, don't you think?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I didn't wake you did I?" she asks worried. "I was trying to be quiet." (She thought she had been being quiet.) "I- better to get it done before people get up?" (And maybe she'd been awake earlier than usual, but that just meant she had more time to get it done..)

Permalink Mark Unread

"You didn't wake me or anything, it's just kinda weird."

Permalink Mark Unread

She flinches slightly at that. "I- was awake? What else was I supposed to do?" she sounds a little lost, and a little desperate.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, I dunno, read a book, watch the sunrise? Most people don't clean for a hobby."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I- hobby? It's not- it's something useful I can do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, if you wanna help out, that's sweet, I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

She relaxes a little, feeling a bit less off-kilter (doesn't say it's not so much about helping out as paying back). She isn't sure what else there is to say, but doesn't go back to scrubbing the floor, fairly sure that would be considered rude.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's your name?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Um. Blaze?" she hears the question in her own voice and repeats herself a little bit more firmly. Pauses. She doesn't think it's rude to... "Yours?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm Kevin. I don't think I've seen you before, are you new?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, a little hesitant. "I guess so? I- came here yesterday?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, that's new."

Permalink Mark Unread

That...wasn't quite what she meant. But she isn't sure how to actually explain what she actually did mean. She drops her sponge back into the bucket. (Having her hands free let's her wind her fingers together.)

She half wants to ask about the school, but isn't even sure what her questions would be.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You okay? I can go if I'm bothering you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I-" she blinked. "Not used to. People talking to me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh. Shit, I'm sorry, man."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...why're you apologising?" 'To me' goes unsaid, but is fairly implied by Blaze's look of utter confusion.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...You look like you've been through some pretty bad shit."

Permalink Mark Unread

She shrugs. People keep saying that, and she doesn't get it, they don't know her, not really, don't know what she deserves. "I guess?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs awkwardly. "If there's anything I can do..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze bites her lips. "The rules? No-one's told me any?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh--don't run in the halls, don't cheat on tests, don't hit the other students or teachers or whatever unless it's a consensual training exercise or something, don't use people-affecting powers on others without their consent?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...that's it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I could be forgetting something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. Just seems. Easy?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, yeah, if rules are hard to follow there's probably something wrong with 'em."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...there is?" She looks, a little bit, like that simple statement has shaken something fundamental. (She'd always thought she was just too stupid to be able to.)

There's flames flickering around her fingers again as she winds them together.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh," she looks at her flickering hands. She can feel the flames trying to get away from her, trying to wind up her wrists.

She reaches into the bucket, under the pretense of reaching for the sponge again. She hisses as the flames die under the water, skin feeling burned in a way it never did from heat.

Permalink Mark Unread

And this is when Edie walks up.

"Hey, I felt you were awake. ...What are you doing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She pulls her hands out of the water, barely remembering to grab the sponge. "Cleaning the floor?" she more asks than says. (Her hands are steaming slightly.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"You really don't have to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I was awake?" she says. "I- thought it would be helpful?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, you weren't wrong. It just--I didn't want you to think you owed it to us. You don't. You don't owe anybody anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

That...isn't right. She doesn't think?

"I-" she looks briefly up at Edie, trying to gauge the correct answer here. "As you say?" she says eventually.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie sits down on the floor beside her and hugs her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She goes briefly tense before leaning into the hug. "M'sorry?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You didn't do anything wrong."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay," she murmurs. She reaches over to drop the sponge back into the bucket. "I should..." she says quietly, gesturing to it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm?'

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- either finish the floors, or- or put the bucket away?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right, that makes sense."

Permalink Mark Unread

She still hesitates, not entirely sure which she should do. (Her hands hurt.) "I-" She can finish the floors later, she's sure. "I'll. Put the bucket away?" (It's more a request for permission than anything else.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay--what's wrong with your hands?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She flinches a little, and folds them together. (She doesn't want to give this away, it's far too easy to use against her.) "I- water sometimes. Hurts. Especially if I- if I'm...if the flames are. There."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Well. If you want to be helpful, I can find something for you to do that doesn't involve water. Or at least find you some rubber gloves so you don't have to touch it."

Permalink Mark Unread

She looks startled. "I- That would be. Good?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good." Hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

She leans into the hug, briefly hugging back. Then she slowly draws back, and starts getting herself to her feet, gathering up the bucket to put it away.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie also climbs to her feet.

Permalink Mark Unread

It doesn't take Blaze long to have the bucket emptied, the sink rinsed, and the supplies back where she found them. Then she stops, clearly at a loss as to what to do next.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Breakfast?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She reminds herself that both Edie and Doctor McCoy think she needs to eat more. (It isn't greed, it isn't.)

"Please?" she says with an almost-eager nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course." Breakfast is served from the same kitchen as her last two meals.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze is as grateful for this meal as she has been for the others.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie also acquires breakfast. "Sorry if I was pushy, back there."

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze tilts her head. "...pushy? I- were you?" Did it matter if Edie had been? She isn't sure the apology makes sense. (No-one apologised to her.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"About the cleaning thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. I-" she shrugs. "I. Didn't think you were?" She's pretty sure she's supposed to say something else here, but she isn't sure what. "I- it's okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

And it feels weird to hear that. "You're- welcome?" the words feel strange to say.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie beams at her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles back shyly (she got something right!), and turns her attention back to her food.

Permalink Mark Unread

Has anyone ever told you you're adorable when you smile?

Permalink Mark Unread

She shakes her head, ducking down a little in an attempt to hide her blush. She shakes her head slowly. (She doesn't really remember smiling before this.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, you are.

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles a little. ...Thank you?

She's finished eating, but doesn't immediately clear her plates.

Permalink Mark Unread

You're welcome!

Have you thought any about names for the baby?

Permalink Mark Unread

She shakes her head. Didn't realise for a while. That I was. And then... she makes a tiny hand gesture trying to encapsulate the whole running away and trying to survive situation.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. That makes sense.

Permalink Mark Unread

...How- how do you even decide that? she asks after a moment of further thought.

Permalink Mark Unread

I was named after Dad's dead mom. Emily was named because Papa thought it sounded pretty.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can understand naming after people (not that she has anyone she'd name her child after), but 'because it's pretty' sounded so...arbitrary. She gently strokes her stomach with one hand. I- don't even. Have ideas? she admits.

Permalink Mark Unread

If there's a concept you'd like to name the kid after there's a good chance there's a name that means it.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's silent for a moment, thinking about that. I- need to. Think more. (So far she hasn't had to worry about where her next meal was coming from, she'll have time to actually think about it.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure. You've got months.

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, and falls silent. Which is about when it hits her that she has no idea what she's supposed to do all day. She doesn't have to try and find some way of getting enough money to eat. She frowns down at her hands.

Permalink Mark Unread

I was thinking of tutoring you in reading.

Permalink Mark Unread

She looks excited at that prospect. I- you have time for that? I- thankyouthankyouthankyou.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, it's a Saturday.

Permalink Mark Unread

She blinks. She'd lost track of the days. Oh. I- hadn't realised? (She manages to stop herself apologising, just, she doesn't think Edie would want her to.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, that happens sometimes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Back...at the. church. I. It was easier. There were things that helped keep track. (She is, despite what Edie's said about the people who took care of her before, still worried that they might send her back if they can figure out where she came from.)

Permalink Mark Unread

If you think something like that would be helpful we can figure something out.

Permalink Mark Unread

I- maybe? I... don't know. Probably?

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay. We can try something and see if it works.

Permalink Mark Unread

She relaxes a tiny amount (despite quietly worrying about them going to that kind of effort for her). Thank you.

Permalink Mark Unread

You're welcome.

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles a little again, and gets up to clear her plate. She looks to see if Edie's done as well in case her plate needs taking.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie has in fact finished.

Permalink Mark Unread

She reaches over to take Edie's plate. It's helpful, and a small thing (Edie said she didn't owe anyone anything..), and she's clearing her own anyway.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You don't have to do that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I... don't mind?" (She honestly doesn't.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Then Blaze will take care of the dishes for them both before returning. She's eager but doesn't want to push on the reading thing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"And now I get to show you the way to the library!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze smiles again, definitely a little bit excited. (And maybe a little bit scared of being surrounded by so many flammable books.) She'll follow Edie.

Permalink Mark Unread

Library-wards!

...

Gosh, that really is a large library.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh. Wow. This is. A big room. And amazing.

(And probably very flammable as well.)

"Wow," she breathes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's pretty great!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She bites at her lip. "Are you sure- sure you want me in here? I- I might burn them? The books?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You haven't set anything on fire so far. And we've got fire extinguishers."

Permalink Mark Unread

That...was true. She hadn't. "I- Okay then," she nods. (It's an amazing room.)

Reading?

Permalink Mark Unread

Reading!

"Can you already read at all or should I start from the beginning?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- beginning? Probably?" she admits, hunches in on herself slightly. "Sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's fine. Do you know the alphabet at all?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A- a little?" she says quietly. "I- not sure how. The letters all sound?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Let's start with that, then." She goes and gets a sheet of paper and a pencil and writes out the alphabet neatly in large letters, upper and lowercase.

"Which ones do you know?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She looks at the piece of paper, and points out the ones she knows sight and sound of - about half of them in total.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, that's not bad. So the other ones are," and she names them and tells her the sounds, "and there's a song to remember the whole thing, if you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...a song?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie sings the alphabet song.

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles a little bit, and echoes Edie. "That's useful," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is! I'm very fond of it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze smiles a little more. "What next?" she asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie gets more paper. "Can you draw each letter?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze is hesitant to try, but does, a look of serious concentration on her face. Her writing is shaky, barely legible, and she's pressing too hard into the paper. Even copying off Edie's example she has a little trouble shaping some of the letters quite right. But they are at least recognisable for what they are supposed to be.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very good!" Edie beams. "Okay, I'm going to write some words and we'll see if you can figure out which ones they are, okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles, a pleased glow going through her at the praise.

"O-Okay," this is a little more intimidating a task.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie writes down a series of short, three or four letter words with no spelling irregularities.

Permalink Mark Unread

She stares at the page blankly for a second, a little panicky. Then, voice quiet and hesitant, tries to read the words aloud. She doesn't get them all exactly right straight away - not quite able to connect the sounds accurately - but once she has an idea what they sound like, she can recognise them as words she uses in speech and repeat them a little more surely.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perfect."

Permalink Mark Unread

And there's a smile and that pleased glow again, and something that is probably pride (she did it!).

"Thank you," she says, looking at the sheet again. (It's a lot less intimidating now.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're quite welcome, you earned it."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles a little there, blushing. (She doesn't quite get how she earned any of this yet, but this... she's so glad she did.)

"...more?" she requests after a moment.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course! Now, some of these letters make different sounds when you put them together. C and H make ch, S and H make sh, T and H make either þ or ð, and P and H make ph."

Permalink Mark Unread

She repeats the sounds back. "Um. How do you tell the difference between þ and ð?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Context. This is a word, þis isn't, for example."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "So...whether it...sounds right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Exactly!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles again, happy she got that right. "What else?" (She's eager enough now that she's almost forgetting to be scared.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie will teach Blaze about Silent E and consecutive vowels!

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze will be an attentive, occasionally very hesitant but mostly highly enthusiastic student! (And the more she learns, the more she smiles.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie is generous with praise, genuinely pleased with her pupil's progress.

Permalink Mark Unread

The praise gets confusion (she has no idea what to do with it), and more blushing and shy smiles. And if she starts striving a little harder to hear Edie praising her, she's probably not aware of it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze is so great! And such a good student! Edie is so happy to be here doing this.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze still can't quite identify the happiness she's feeling, but it's a nice sensation.

Eventually though, Blaze realises she's getting hungry again.

Reluctantly, once she's worked up the nerve, she quietly mentions it. "You- said to tell you? If I was. Hungry?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh! Yeah. We should go get you some more food, reading lessons will keep. Thanks for telling me."

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't really want to stop the reading lessons, but. But she was told she needed to eat more. She smiles at Edie again. "You're- welcome?" (She's still really not sure how to respond to people saying 'thank you' to her.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie beams at her and then leads her to the cafeteria.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze follows, continuing to stay close to Edie and shift closer if there are other people around.

Permalink Mark Unread

There are sometimes other people around!

Permalink Mark Unread

She watches them slightly warily, but also a little curiously. She's never really interacted with people outside of the church, and even less with people closer to her age. (And from what she can tell 'seen and not heard' does not seem to apply.)

Permalink Mark Unread

The people her own age are noisy as a whole and sometimes individually loud. Some of them engage in good-natured shoving. A girl a little younger than her rolls her eyes at a group of boys and lifts off from the ground, floating away loftily.

Permalink Mark Unread

The shoving in the immediate makes her wince and flinch - but no-one seems to be getting hurt? It's...strange.

And the girl... she's not scared to use her powers? (But that's a good ability, floating doesn't hurt anyone.) Blaze watches, a little bit enviously (sometimes being able to just float away from everything would be nice).

Permalink Mark Unread

A few heads turn their way but they're looking at Edie much more than Blaze.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can tell they're not really looking at her, and she feels silly that it still makes her feel self-conscious, still makes her half-hide behind Edie. (Although she doesn't exactly understand why they're looking at Edie either.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie can't wrap an arm around her at this angle, but she sends a similar emotional state.

Permalink Mark Unread

She relaxes a little bit at that, but still stays close. She doesn't want to risk someone else trying to talk to her right now, aware after this morning that she is hopelessly lacking at ability to do so.)

Permalink Mark Unread

They reach the cafeteria without incident.

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't exactly relax, but she does get a little bit excited about eating. The food here tastes nice, and is actually properly filling. (And there's that smile again, although behind it, there's still worry about how much she's going to owe.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, only time will solve that. They get food. Edie doesn't get very much, this time; it's not actually normal lunchtime yet so she's not very hungry.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze does look a little awkward at that. "I- could have waited?" she says quietly. (She is clutching her plate slightly.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"No," she says firmly. "It's fine. I'll have more next time you're hungry; you need food at more frequent intervals because you haven't been getting enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"O-Okay," she agrees quietly. (She hadn't starved.) "Thank you." She's more successful at eating at a more reasonable pace this time, although still fairly quickly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's a difference between 'enough to keep you alive' and 'enough to keep you healthy' much less 'enough to keep you and the baby healthy'."

Permalink Mark Unread

She flinches a tiny bit at that, almost as if it's a judgement on her. "I- tried," she says quietly. "When I ran. But."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course," she says. "It's not your fault you didn't have enough food."

Permalink Mark Unread

She's really not used to someone telling her something isn't her fault - more often than not she was being told that everything that happened to her was her fault. "How can- you be so sure?" (The reassurance does help some, just...it's confusing.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"You were resorting to things that had you that scared to get money. If you'd had more ability to get food why would you have done that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I-" she doesn't have an answer to that, so settles for a slight shrug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So. Obviously not your fault."

Permalink Mark Unread

"O-okay." That still feels weird to try and accept, but Edie sounds so sure.

Blaze finishes eating in silence.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie will lead her back to the library, then. More reading lessons?

Permalink Mark Unread

Definitely! Blaze continues to be an eager and focused student.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie is so appreciative!

"If you ever enter formal classes the teachers will love you."

Permalink Mark Unread

She blushes and smiles a little, but shakes her head. "I don't... know anything?" she points out. (Nothing academic at least.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, maybe not yet, but that's what classes are for! And you're an amazing student."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles again and blushes more. "I- just." She wants to say she's not, but she has no idea how that's even quantified, and Edie probably knows better than her? "It's...nice? And...interesting?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mhm!"

Permalink Mark Unread

More learning to read?

Permalink Mark Unread

Absolutely.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then more reading until Blaze starts getting hungry again. She's a little less hesitant about telling Edie this time - if she's right, it's closer to what is normally a time to eat.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie arranges their materials neatly and then they can go eat.

A boy at the next table over picks up a slice of bread. His hand bursts into fire for a few seconds and then it goes out and he starts buttering his toast.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze flinches, and looks around a little wildly, looking for someone reacting to that. That can't be safe, surely someone's going to- To do something. She's trembling.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you okay?" Edie asks, immediately concerned. She doesn't seem to have particularly noticed the toast, or at least she's not reacting to it. Actually, no one's reacting to it at all. No, wait, another kid at their table is asking him to toast her bread too, which he does.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- he- she-" She can't get the words coherent enough. Is that safe? Are they safe?! It's desperate, she doesn't want anyone hurt like her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, they're fine. There's nothing wrong with fire."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But-" that's- that's wrong. She'd always been told it was wrongbadsinful.

But no-one's reacting, and Edie says they're fine. They're fine. It's fine. (Her hands are both fists, nails digging into palms, white-knuckled under her own flames that she's trying to force away.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did you know that the human body, even a baseliner one, is always a teeny bit on fire?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze blinks nearly up at Edie. "i- what-?" Her breathing is still a little rapid, and she's not making any progress on her hands being any less on fire.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The human body has tiny tiny pieces called cells, to small for the eye to see, and each cell has an even tinier piece called a mitochondrion, and mitochondria burn food to keep the body running. It's why people are warm."

Permalink Mark Unread

That's...that's interesting. But- it isn't- isn't the same.

She reaches out for her glass of water, hands still on fire, shaking slightly, and knocks the glass over one hand (in an action that could be clumsiness brought on by the panic, but looks at least slightly deliberate). The flames extinguish with a hiss, and Blaze bites at her lip to hold back any pained sound from herself, even as she hurries to right the glass.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you okay!?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yesyes," she says hurriedly, closing her still damp hand over the other (and she hisses as the flames extinguish this time). "Betterbetter."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, it's okay, there's nothing wrong with your hands being on fire."

Permalink Mark Unread

She wants to believe that, but she can't help but be waiting for the other shoe, for the yelling at the pain and-

"M'sorry," she manages to mumble, not sure what she's apologising for (getting something wrong about the rules here? Maybe).

Permalink Mark Unread

"You didn't do anything wrong," Edie says firmly.

Permalink Mark Unread

She twists her fingers together, presses her eyes briefly closed, breathes. "I- as you say?" she murmurs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie hugs her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Part of her wants to pull away, doesn't believe she deserves this, is worried she might hurt Edie, but...

But she leans into Edie, taking the offered comfort.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie pets her hair soothingly.

Permalink Mark Unread

She shudders into Edie, and clings to her a little bit. (She's aware enough to be concerned about people watching, but right now she almost doesn't care.)

Permalink Mark Unread

So much hugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze is discovering how nice hugs are when distressed! She relaxes slowly against Edie, the tremors running through her gradually subsiding.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hugs and pets and soothing murmurs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually, Blaze is just leaning against Edie, shoulders occasionally hitching with her still slightly-uneven breathing. Here, she starts to get a little more self-conscious about what people are thinking.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perhaps unfortunately Edie isn't reading her mind to know this.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze makes herself pull away, a little reluctantly, biting at her lips. "...can I- can I- be excused?" She...needs to not be around anyone for a little while.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you," she says quietly, and gets to her feet, clearing her dishes, before leaving the cafeteria to return to the room she was given, hoping not to run into anyone.

Permalink Mark Unread

There exist people in hallways but none of them attempt to interact with her.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's good. She isn't sure how she would interact with them. She makes it back to the room, and looks around, needing...

She pauses, pulls the blanket off the bed, and wraps it around her shoulders. The bed itself feels too exposed. She needs to be...

Permalink Mark Unread

She slides under the bed, draws the blanket tighter around herself. She's hiding, and it's childish, but it feels safer.

She is unlikely to come back out until someone or something prompts her to.

Permalink Mark Unread

After some number of hours there is a quiet knocking on her door.

Permalink Mark Unread

It takes her a moment to realise that someone is actually knocking. And another to realise that they're not just coming in.

She slides out from under the bed, but can't quite make herself shrug off the blanket. So she's still wrapped in it when she pulls the door open, staying to the side so that whoever is behind it can enter.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She thinks about that, rather than just going with the reflexive 'yes'. (She thinks Edie will prefer an honest answer.)

"I think so?" she says eventually. "Better. I just- overwhelmed?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. I'm glad you're better. What was overwhelming?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- everything? kinda? Just. Too much? And then hugging. Where everyone could- see? Felt. Too much."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Is there anything I could have done differently that would have been better?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She gives a helpless little shrug. "i- don't think I would know? Even if there was? I- you. were...good?" (It wasn't Edie that had made her feel overwhelmed. "Not used to. That many people?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want to eat somewhere else?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- that. Seems. Inconvenient? For- people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You wouldn't be the only one."

Permalink Mark Unread

She chews on her lip. "Please?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure." Hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

She leans into the hug, hugging back, smiling a little bit. "Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're very very welcome."

Permalink Mark Unread

She ducks her head a little to hide the content, pleased smile that's on her lips. You're wonderful.

Permalink Mark Unread

So are you!

Permalink Mark Unread

I-I'm not, she disagrees, flustered and blushing again, but also very convinced she isn't, not like Edie.

Permalink Mark Unread

You're adorable and considerate and you're going to be a great mom.

Permalink Mark Unread

The first two she can't process, but that last one she latches onto. You think so?

Permalink Mark Unread

Definitely!

Permalink Mark Unread

I want to be. She...doesn't deserve anything less. She hesitates. Can you tell...whether the baby is a boy or a girl? There's no preference either way, more curiosity.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not telepathically. There's a way to take a picture of the unborn baby, but those don't show sex for a little while longer.

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, a little fascinated by the idea of a machines that can take a picture of an unborn baby, and not at all upset by there not being anyway to tell. She stays leaning into the hugs.

"Had you wanted something else?" she asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nah. I just wanted to make sure you were okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. Then pauses, thinks. "A little hungry now?" she admits.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, I'll ask someone to come with food."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- I can go and- get it. That's fine, I'll be fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Too much stress is bad for the baby."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- oh," she says, looking down. "And- and no-one will...mind?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No one will mind," she assures her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"O-okay," she agrees, still a little reluctant.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

She leans into the hug, feeling somewhat more settled somehow.

Permalink Mark Unread

Poor kid. Well. There's time.

"You know what might be fun to practice reading with?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fun?" she sounds curious, and a little wary. (Very little of the things other people had claimed would be fun had been fun for her, but Edie hasn't lied to her yet.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"A baby name book."

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh. Oh. That does sound fun.

She smiles shyly. "That sounds like it would be really fun," she agrees. (And useful.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm glad I guessed right!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze's smile widens. "Would've thought you'd be able to tell I'd enjoy it?" she asks a little cautiously.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, I'm not usually reading your mind."

Permalink Mark Unread

That is, she supposes, reasonable. "...you must have good control?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I haven't read anyone's mind by accident in years."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh," she says quietly. She wishes her control was that good. She snuggles slightly into Edie.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie snuggles back.

"I had to use my power to get that kind of control. If I'd been taught to repress it I'd still be leaking all over the place."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I- does that- help?"

(Except, she can't, she can't, she's not supposed to.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. It does."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh."

Maybe that would help. But she can'tcan'tcan't.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...No one's going to make you. But--it would be nice if you felt like you could, someday."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- m'sorry," she says into Edie's shoulder. "I- they. Said it was wrong. And that I shouldn't, and I can't." (She can't help but think she'll get hurt if she does, she always did before, even when she was trying not to.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know. They were wrong, wrong like they were wrong about your baby being a person, but there's no hurry. You take whatever pace you need to."

Permalink Mark Unread

She leans against Edie and continues to try and figure out how this is real, and how she ever got this. (And how lucky she is that Edie, who apparently didn't accidentally read minds, somehow managed to find her, and help her, and save her.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie hugs her.

"Fire isn't a bad thing, you know. Candles are fire. Cozy hearths are fire. Lots and lots and lots of good things are fire."

Permalink Mark Unread

She'd...never. Thought. About that. It had always been...

"Hellfire," she mumbles. "I- they. That's what they always said. That it was a curse from the Devil."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, it's not. It's as natural as your eyes or your hands, and as much a part of you."

Permalink Mark Unread

She's quiet for a moment. "I- I think I want to believe that?" she says eventually (because not being wrong would be so nice). "I just- it's."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. I know."

Permalink Mark Unread

Emily comes walking up a moment later, a seamless metal box hovering beside her. "Hi."

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze flinches a tiny bit, but it doesn't seem to be because she's actually scared. "Hi?" she replies.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I come bearing food." The box opens and unfolds to reveal food.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze watches in amazement and awe. "Thank you," she says quietly, and then pauses. "I- that's. Incredible?" She gestures at the box. (She's not entirely sure she's supposed to comment on these things.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles shyly at Emily and hesitantly reaches for the food.

Permalink Mark Unread

Emily nudges it a little closer.

Permalink Mark Unread

She eats a little slower here, doesn't seem quite as concerned about someone trying to steal it from her (even if she's fairly sure she couldn't do anything if Emily tried). She also seems to manage to eat a little more than she has down in the cafeteria.

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually though, she's full again. "Thank you," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Happy to help."

Permalink Mark Unread

She gives another shy, if somewhat bewildered smile in response to that. (Why is everyone being so nice?)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Time to return the dishes. See ya later!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- I can do that?" she offers.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I need to turn the tray back into a tray anyway," she says, gesturing at the box. "Thanks, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- oh. You-you're welcome." She is very not used to being thanked, but it's...nice.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze leans exhaustedly against Edie. If they don't move for long enough, she'll drift off.

Permalink Mark Unread

--Edie will probably want to sit down first but otherwise that can totally happen.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well. The bed is right there, and Blaze is fairly certain that Edie isn't going to take advantage of her. (She'd been fairly firm on the matter yesterday.)

Permalink Mark Unread

They can sit on the bed and Edie will cuddle Blaze chastely and not take advantage of her one bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Blaze will fall asleep with her head on Edie's shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aww. Edie is careful not to disturb her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well then. Blaze is going to be asleep for a while. (She was up far too early this morning and it's been a full day.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie is a telepath and does not need to budge one bit to entertain herself. She talks to people and eavesdrops on her sister going flying and hugs the sleeping pyrokinetic.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually, the sleeping pyrokinetic stirs, and goes briefly tense, before realising that her pillow is Edie.

"I- sorry I- I didn't. Keep you from- anything? Did I?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nah. One of the conveniences of telepathy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- good. M'sorry I keep falling asleep on you?" (And she's slightly surprised she keeps managing to fall asleep on Edie, even if the other girl feels so safe.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't mind a bit."

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze smiles a bit. "I-if you're sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you." (She's ever bit as earnest here as she has been with every other thank you.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles a bit more, and then hesitates. "I- what time is it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Five twelve."

Permalink Mark Unread

She bites at her lip, shifting slightly. She feels like there's something she should be doing, but she isn't sure what. (She's aware enough that she's not back at the church, but the lack of chores is unnerving.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Want me to get the reading lesson stuff?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She starts to nod eagerly, pauses. "If there's...nothing else? I should be doing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't think of anything else that could be more important. Unless you're hungry again. After all, you want to be able to teach the baby, don't you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...You think I'll be able to?" she asks (and she can't hide her excitement at that idea).

Permalink Mark Unread

"Definitely."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles down at her hands. "Please?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay! Be right back," she says, getting up to go fetch materials.

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. While Edie's gone, she straightens the rumpled bed covers back to almost military neatness.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie comes back with reading lesson things. If she notices the bedspread she doesn't comment on it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze looks up eagerly, fingers laced together, biting slightly at her lip.

Permalink Mark Unread

Awwwww. Edie will sit down beside her and teach her reading then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze will continue to be an enthusiastic and attentive student, leaning a little in towards Edie so their shoulders are nearly touching.

Permalink Mark Unread

Would Blaze like hug? Blaze can totally have hug if she wants it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze is slightly surprised by the fact that she does want a hug. (She's still not sure what to make of physical contact that doesn't hurt, but she can't deny that it makes her feel better.) So. Hug it is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hugs! And reading lessons!

Permalink Mark Unread

Happy, content, excited Blaze!

Permalink Mark Unread

Perfect.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually, though, even the most enthusiastic student will run out of concentration. Blaze tries to stay focused, but despite feeling (strangely) well rested (physically at least), mentally, she's fairly exhausted.

Permalink Mark Unread

Makes sense.

"You seem tired."

Permalink Mark Unread

"M'fine," she tries. (She doesn't want to stop.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. But it's fine to stop whenever, let me know if you want to."

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes it another fifteen minutes before she just can't concentrate. She makes a noise that's halfway between distressed and irritated at herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- just. Can't," she says, gesturing a little at the lesson materials, and folding down slightly. "Can't focus?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

She blinks at that. She knows Edie just said it was okay to stop whenever, but...

"S'okay?" she asks quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you," she murmurs, leaning a little heavier into Edie. "M'sorry. Just. Can't focus anymore."

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuggle. "Yeah, of course. Mental energy is a thing that can be used up as much as physical energy is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh." Snuggles.

There's a...lot of new stuff she's learning, quite aside from how to read, and she isn't even sure how to process it all. (Isn't even entirely sure she can.)

Permalink Mark Unread

For now she does not have to process anything. Instead, snuggles.

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuggles!

Although eventually, with nothing else to focus on, Blaze starts getting twitchy at the fact that she's just doing nothing.

Permalink Mark Unread

When she starts getting twitchy Edie asks if she's okay.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not used to...not doing anything?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess that makes sense."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- is there. Something? I can be doing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Definitely," she says firmly. "--Do you want to learn to knit?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She thinks about that, bites at her lip. Yarn is flammable but...

She nods. "Please?" she asks quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay! I don't actually know how to knit yet, either, but we can find knitting stuff and there's probably a book on it in the library, we can learn together."

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze bites at her lip a little more. "I- if you. Don't mind? I- would like that? But- don't want to...take up all your time?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Once the weekend's over I'll have classes again."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. Yes." (She'd half forgotten that school was a thing Edie would be doing.) "That's good," despite the quiet tone, there's nothing but sincerity in her words. (Someone as good as Edie shouldn't waste her time on Blaze.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"But you're making really good progress on reading and I bet you'll be able to practice while I'm gone if you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

She ducks her head, blushing slightly. (She's definitely not used to be told she's good at anything.) "I- I hope so. Would like that." (Which is more about being able to read on her own than not spending time with Edie.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'll be great."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles quietly, quickly trying to smother the sound, but stays snuggled into Edie.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want to go look for knitting stuff or should I ask Emily to get it for us?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She thinks for a moment. (She can't stay in this room for ever, even if she'd prefer to.) "I- can we go?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

She manages to make herself separate from Edie and gets to her feet. She's a little unsteady from having been sat down for so long.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie watches carefully so she can catch her if she falls.

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't fall, thankfully, and looks to Edie for guidance on where they're going to look.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's go to the library first to look for a book about knitting."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods and smiles a little. "I like the library," she says - and then ducks her head realising that that has no relevance to anything.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then we should definitely go there."

Permalink Mark Unread

She half flinches, and then makes a sound that might be a giggle.

Permalink Mark Unread

A giggle! Hooray!

Permalink Mark Unread

Library then?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze looks around with the same awe as she had earlier, although she looks a little bit lost - she has no idea where to even start looking for what they're looking for.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze is adorable and Edie can lead her to the right section.

Permalink Mark Unread

Which Blaze isn't exactly sure how much help she'll be finding the book the need, but if no-one's going to tell her off, she'll enjoy being able to trace her fingers down the spines of books, trying to read the titles.

Permalink Mark Unread

Many of the titles are readable!

Edie continues scanning the shelves in a particular area.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze's attention is caught by a book on glassworking. She pulls it out, smiling at the image on the front cover before flicking it open. She looks at the first page, and manages to make out enough of the words to get a basic idea that the book is a very basic how to guide to making glass items.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aha! Found it!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She flinches slightly, snapping the book closed and sliding it back onto the shelf. She looks over to Edie.

Permalink Mark Unread

"--Are you okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- yes?" she nods. (She just got distracted, she should've been paying more attention to when Edie was done.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"What were you looking at?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I-" she reaches hesitantly for the book again, pulling it out to show Edie. "Glass-working," she says. "M'sorry, was supposed to be helping you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ooh, no, it's fine. Glassworking, that looks interesting."

Permalink Mark Unread

After a moment, she nods. "I- hadn't thought about how. Those things were made?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A lot of it's made in factories, these days, but the handmade stuff is usually nicer."

Permalink Mark Unread

She hesitates, twists her fingers together. "Looked. Like. Useful fire?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Her smile widens a tiny bit. "I- we. Knitting book?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She hoists it in the air. "Knitting book!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze giggles, and doesn't seem quite so desperate to hide it this time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent.

"Come on, let's go find stuff to knit with."

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze's smile doesn't fade as she follows after Edie again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie deftly maneuvers them along a path to the arts-and-crafts room that doesn't involve running into anyone.

Permalink Mark Unread

If Blaze realised that they were being routed to avoid people she would be grateful! As it is, she is simply relieved, and still smiling when they get to the arts and crafts room.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's good.

Edie consults the book to figure out what kind of yarn and needles they should grab.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze drifts a little away, looking around the room curiously.

Permalink Mark Unread

The room contains a lot of a wide variety of craft supplies.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well. It makes sense for a school to be well stocked she supposes. She recognises some of the supplies, but far from all and moves back closer to Edie.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What colors do you want?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She hesitates for a moment and then shrugs. "I- not sure." She bites at her lip. "Red? Maybe?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay!" She grabs a skein of red and a skein of blue.

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles. "Thank you. Wh- what else?" (She's a bit excited, and supposes she should actually help out.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Needles. They should be around here somewhere--metal or wood sticks with a point on one end and a thing to keep the yarn from slipping off on the other."

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze searches carefully, and pulls out what she thinks they're looking for. "These?" she asks holding them up.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, those! Thanks!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome," Blaze says, smile turning shy again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie points a finger at her. "Adorable," she accuses playfully.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I-" and now Blaze is giggly and blushing, and has no idea how to actually respond to that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggles are a good response! Would she like a hug?

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, as she has recently discovered, hugs are good, so, yes please. (With needles carefully held so they won't injure either of them.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent.

Permalink Mark Unread

And while this is very pleasant. "...knitting?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Knitting! Come on, let's go back to your room."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, relieved that they're leaving the more public areas of the school where they might run into other people. She isn't quite following Edie this time, more walking beside her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Progress!

Edie maneuvers them out of the way of people again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze noticeably relaxes when they get back to her room. (It's nice having a place that feels safe, somewhere she feels she could retreat to if she needed to, although it's an entirely new feeling.)

Permalink Mark Unread

And then they can attempt to puzzle out the knitting book.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze finds it strangely fun, and not as frustrating as she'd normally find not managing something. (It helps that there's someone else learning with her, that she's not getting in trouble whenever she messes up.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie elects to start very simple with a soft blue scarf.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, that certainly seems to make sense as a first project, so Blaze copies that, except in red.

Knitting is strangely soothing, the repetitive motions, the slight click of needles together. And the satisfaction of seeing the scarf start to take shape.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's pretty great. Edie was not expecting this! Yay for pleasant surprises.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you," she says quietly after a little while. "This is...good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually, Blaze starts getting hungry again - although she is distracted enough by knitting to not immediately notice until her stomach gives an almost embarrassingly loud grumble.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll send Emily for food again."

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze half goes to argue, and then hesitates. It was nicer not having to worry about running into people. "Okay," she agrees quietly, focusing on her knitting again.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"M'fine," she says quietly. "Just. People running around after me. Feels. Wrong."

Permalink Mark Unread

She hugs her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She leans into the hug, hugging back.

Permalink Mark Unread

Different people have different needs. If yours involve not being around other people, that's fine.

Permalink Mark Unread

She snuggles into Edie. I- if you. Say so. (There's just too many things to watch if she's around other people.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuggle. I do. And I'm right, because I'm awesome.

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles a little again. You are, she agrees.

Permalink Mark Unread

You're awesome, too. Also the baby.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's not so sure about that first bit, but they definitely agree on the second. She's incredible, Blaze strokes her stomach.

Permalink Mark Unread

You're going to be such a great mom.

Permalink Mark Unread

I hope so. She doesn't want her child to ever feel afraid, or hurt.

Permalink Mark Unread

I know so.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blushing! Confused and unfamiliar pride at that declaration!

(And more snuggles.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes definitely.

You're adorable.

Permalink Mark Unread

More blushing, and giggling again. You keep saying that. (A little unsure.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Because you keep being adorable!

Permalink Mark Unread

She isn't sure how to respond to that (except more blushing, but that really isn't by choice).

Permalink Mark Unread

That's okay, Edie will keep snuggling her anyway.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well then, snuggling it is for now.

And at some point Blaze's stomach reminding them that food had been previously requested.

Permalink Mark Unread

"--Emily should be here soon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"O-okay," she says. (Is she supposed to pull away? She...doesn't really want to.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, Edie doesn't do anything to interrupt the hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then the hug will continue, because it's nice, and she doesn't want to move.

Permalink Mark Unread

The door opens and Emily comes in with another floating metal box.

Permalink Mark Unread

She ducks her head slightly, but her content feelings don't vanish. "Hello," she says quietly. "Thank you for..." she makes a small gesture at the metal box.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome! It's fun to show off, and Edie's right about you being adorable."

Permalink Mark Unread

The giggle is a little quieter, but she isn't trying to actually hide it.

Food?

Permalink Mark Unread

Food!

Permalink Mark Unread

She looks at Edie and Emily, then at the food. "I- do you two- you should eat?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay," Edie says, reaching for a roll.

Permalink Mark Unread

She relaxes a little at that, and starts eating herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want a hug?"

Permalink Mark Unread

The answer is not an immediate no. She bites her lip, thinking about it. (Hugs from Edie have been nice, and Emily is Edie's sister and-)

"Yes?" she says, a little uncertainly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Emily hugs her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She leans into the hugs slightly, returns it a little hesitantly.

Permalink Mark Unread

It turns out Emily gives good hugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, Blaze doesn't have a lot to compare it to, but the hug is good. She relaxes a little more.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie finishes her roll and then Blaze can get hugged by two people instead of only one.

Permalink Mark Unread

She is briefly confused, and then just lets herself enjoy feeling safe and cared about.

Permalink Mark Unread

That is good because she is both of those things.

Permalink Mark Unread

She relaxes a little more into the hugs, half wanting to hug both of them back, but one hand is resting on her stomach again (as though her baby can feel that), and she can't persuade herself to move it.

There's a faint, tingling sensation, that shifts to something...almost prickly, inside her stomach.

Permalink Mark Unread

"--I think the baby just manifested."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- is that-? All that is?" Blaze manages to keep her voice from being too panicked. "I- it's not something... wrong?" (Please don't be anything wrong.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"What are you feeling?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- a sort of. Tingly. Prickling sensation?" She moves her hand a little. "Mostly here, but a little all over my stomach?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's probably just the baby, then. Congratulations, it's an electrokinetic."

Permalink Mark Unread

She calms some when Edie gives her verdict. Hesitates, and then, abruptly, giggles as the sensation hits an apparently ticklish spot.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie giggles too and hugs her some more.

Permalink Mark Unread

She snuggles into Edie. "She's incredible," she murmurs, smiling down at her stomach.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

Blaze smiles, happy and calm (in a way she doesn't remember ever being before).

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh good. Edie has less than no desire to interrupt that; she'll just snuggle Blaze until she indicates otherwise.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually, she starts getting a little twitchy again, not exactly wanting to stop snuggling, and not really losing most of the happiness or calm, just... Needing to do something.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You okay?" Edie asks when she notices the twitching.

Permalink Mark Unread

She gives a slight shrug. "Just- still. Want to be doing something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wanna go back to knitting?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She thinks for a moment, and then nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie fetches their scarves in progress.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Blaze goes back to knitting. It's- not quite as soothing as something she's more used to would be, but it helps, and she's fairly rapidly considerably less twitchy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Edie picks up her own knitting.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then they can knit for a while. Every so often, Blaze pauses, resting her hand on her stomach, humming quietly, soothingly.

Permalink Mark Unread

That is the most adorable thing ever.

Permalink Mark Unread

After a little while, Blaze notices the attention, and ducks her head a little - not overly concerned, but...unsettled. "I- what? Did you-" (need something) "are you okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're just incredibly cute when you're paying attention to the baby, that's all."

Permalink Mark Unread

She bites at her lip, blushing again. She opens her mouth to say something and has exactly no idea what to say, and finds herself giggling slightly instead. "I- she's- distracting?" (Not in a bad way, never in a bad way.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can see it."

Permalink Mark Unread

She blinks, a little unsurely at Edie, not sure if that's a good statement or bad.
