a juliet reincarnates into the naruto-verse

At the end of all things, there is a waiting room.

It's fairly typical, as these things go. Thin, scratchy carpet. Fish tank with still fish. Old gossip magazines. Incredibly uncomfortable chairs. The low buzz of a television or radio or something somewhere else, words indistinguishable. No windows, no clock, no door, and the receptionist's desk was shuttered.

This one's a bit special, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

-- she has no idea how she got here.

What. Did she get kidnapped again?

Permalink Mark Unread

A man walks through a door that suddenly has always existed, calling "Juliet?" in a very bored receptionist tone.

Permalink Mark Unread

Juliet stands, a little startled. She feels like she should be more alarmed than she currently is.

"That's me. I am the only one here though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"In one sense."

"We're ready for your consultation now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did I make an appointment?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The same way everyone does."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I, uh, don't actually remember. What am I in for?"

She walks towards him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're here to discuss your afterlife options, Ms. Juliet."

Permalink Mark Unread

She blinks.

"-- I'm what?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"In for an afterlife consultation. Hm, let's see if I remember... Ah, yes. Magical burns, sustained in the course of fighting alongside a certain Klaus against enemies of his."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That... I don't remember that. Is Klaus okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That information isn't in my file on you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can you find out?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not trivially. Our department handles over a hundred deaths a minute. You could spend karmic balance on such an answer, but your totals are rather... Low."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How is that calculated? Was it the vampirism? That wasn't exactly my idea."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You had a rather low total starting out, given your past lives' actions. During this life - numerous counts of murder, justified and not, self deception, using the sire-bond as an excuse for your actions, attempted murder, betrayal... We could be here all day, listing your many negative strikes, but I am quite busy."

Permalink Mark Unread

She sighs, frustrated and a little resigned. She isn't even going to bother defending herself. It's all true.

"Past lives? How many times have I died?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"According to my records, this is your seven hundred and eighty second time through this office."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is that normal? Have we met before? Why don't I remember?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Remembering past lives is unusual. And that is an oddly high number - most people either accumulate enough karmic balance to remove themselves from the reincarnation cycle, or else end up enough in the negatives to be removed by us, before that point."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you know why I'm still around then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seems to be a habit towards taking on the morals of those around you - usually to poor ends, but not always, enough to balance things some."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's kinda reassuring, actually. That I'm still me in whatever life I live. What happens now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We sit down, look over your options, and you make your decision on your next afterlife."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No chance this was a mistake and you'll let me go back to my life?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You don't have nearly enough karmic balance for something like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

She sighs and moves on. This isn't the first time she's died -- at least in her last life. The only difference was she was stuck in purgatory last time.

"Okay. Let's do this. Give me my options."

Permalink Mark Unread

He leads her into a rather bland office, and provides her with paperwork. There's lists of options - including what she can afford, and what she can't. Leaving the cycle for paradise is too expensive. Several nice reincarnation options - lifelong luck, royalty, a peaceful life, memory of past life - are too expensive. A few potentially useful powers are available. A few credits are available - lifelong bad luck, or a congenital defect or disease, or a genetic predisposition towards cancer, will allow her to purchase more, but not significantly so. Coming back as a non-sapient is ridiculously cheap. Coming back in poverty, or assorted bad circumstances, is relatively cheap.

Permalink Mark Unread

She bites her lip. All these options suck a lot. And not in the fun way.

"Are there other types of credit options?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not - "

A phone rings. "Hold on, I need to take this."

He stands, sort of loiters at the back of the room, puts his phone to his ear (it's not clear when it started being in his hand).

"Yes, ma'am - really ma'am - right away, ma'am," he says, with pauses between. The voice on the other end isn't audible at all.

He pockets - or vanishes - his phone once the call ends, and turns to Juliet.

"There may be. One of our other offices is experiencing a critical shortage of souls. You'll get a massive karmic credit for doing this favor for us, enough to put you well in the black - perhaps enough for paradise in a few lifetimes, or a miraculous resurrection from where you died, if you keep a positive karmic balance going forward. You won't be in the same world, and are unlikely to meet any of the souls you've ever known. You won't have options on time period; the soul shortage is for a specific window."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's... that sounds good." She could find her way back to her last life, do better. "What sort of world is it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"One often at war, in the region they need, though not presently so. The least dead-end career path can be charitably described as 'child soldier.' It has a potential apocalypse, about fifteen years after your scheduled birth - which would, in fact, be a positive karmic attribute to avert. The local magic takes the form of energy that can be channeled into an assortment of powerful techniques; it's one of the more flexible magic systems in terms of sheer breadth."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I'm no stranger to violence and death. I was a hybrid. And I've been through an apocalypse situation before. Would I have the ability to use the magic myself?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Most likely, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would I remember this? Remember me? Who I was before?"

Everyone she has ever loved? She doesn't want to forget them. Not ever.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Past life memories is an option, albeit one usually out of most people's price ranges. You should be able to afford it now, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I want it. What other options are there; can I afford any more?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let me see... Usually you'd have to go down to their office, but they're overwhelmed right now, and have sent me the needed paperwork." He removes a stack from one of the ones on the desk.

"Your options are listed here..."

Among the advantages, which cost credit:

-past life memories (100 points)

--perfect memory of past life (2 points)

-lifelong luck (50 points)

-shinobi start (10 points; Dan clarifies this is the main class of people able to use the magic)

-noble start (25 points)

-large chakra capacity (2 points; Dan clarifies that chakra powers the local magic)

-good chakra control (2 points)

-natural taijutsu skill (3 points; Dan translates 'taijutsu' as 'basically martial arts')

-eidetic memory (1 point)

-natural talent for inventing techniques (2 points)

-quick learner (1 point)

-lifelong companion (1 point)

-clan start, medium (10 points)

-clan start, bloodline (25 points)

-clan start, powerful bloodline (50 points)

--choice of clan or bloodline (10 points)

Among the disadvantages, which give credit:

-persecuted bloodline (-5 points)

-demon host, not useful (-5 points)

-demon host, useful (-2 points)

-small chakra capacity (-1 points)

-weak chakra control (-1 points)

-extreme poverty (-5 points)

-inability to use chakra (-5 points; only available to those with 'shinobi start', cannot be taken with other options mentioning chakra)

-born an orphan (-2 points)

-fate entanglement (-5 points)

--fated enemies (-3 points)

Juliet has 124 points to spend.

Permalink Mark Unread

Juliet ticks the option for memories of her past life, and perfect memory of that past life. She has a great memory already, but she very much doesn't want to take the chance. She also picks up eidetic memory for the same reason. Lifelong luck is too expensive, even if it would be very useful.

She hovers of the word shinobi and looks up at him

"Ninjas?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. There are also samurai, which are rarer and more isolated."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Interesting." Juliet ticks the shinobi start option and files his information away for later. "This is all really familiar. Though I'm still really fuzzy. Is that normal?"

She continues down and takes natural taijutsu skill, large chakra capacity and quick learner.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your abilities will kick in once you reincarnate, if that's what you mean?"

"For the clan options: clans are a sort of extended family unit. Membership in one provides advantages - a support network, money, and for shinobi usually special clan techniques. Bloodlines are special powers belonging only to that clan."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I've had enough with bloodline magic for several lifetimes. I'll pass on that." She ticks clan start, medium though. "But having a clan sounds nice."

...she also picks lifelong companion.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright. Any other selections, or questions?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She bites her lip and calculates her total.

"I need to pick some disadvantages."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm, yes. Let me know if you need explanations for any."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Explain... demon host."

Permalink Mark Unread

"This world has an assortment of things that can be loosely referred to as 'demons,' ranging from minor spirits to some of the most powerful beings in the world. Being a host gives you access to a small fraction of their power, but risks inviting what's essentially corruption and possession. Demon hosts are often emotionally unstable and widely hated."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not unlike werewolves..."

Is that really something she wants to repeat? She loved being a werewolf, but that didn't mean it didn't also bring misery and countless enemies.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Possibly somewhat different, but the general idea is similar, I expect, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I need to save the world, right? Being a demon host would probably impede that significantly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not an expert on this world, so I wouldn't be able to say for sure. Not usually my field."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair enough." She looks through the options again... and picks fate entanglement and fated enemies. "That sounds ominous enough that it could be related to the whole apocalypse thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There could be a variety of things, but given the timing, that does seem likely, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

Juliet nods and hands him back the form.

"With two points to spare."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good. That'll be usable next life. Building up a buffer is quite useful."

He reads through her forms, nods, says, "All checks out. You should experience the transition momentarily."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you. Do you have any advice?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't take the world at face value," he says. "And try to build up your karmic balance."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hopefully with my memories intact, it'll be easier. Thank you again."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're quite welcome."

And the world sort of goes dark and fuzzy and warm.

Permalink Mark Unread

-- it's terrifying, but also exciting and nice and comforting. She embraces it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meanwhile, outside the Inuzuka clan head's house - and the location of the newest clan member's birth -

A large but unnaturally quiet wolf ghosts past the wards, past the sentinel dogs - one older dog whines, and strikes up agitation and a baying goes up -

The wolf avoids any people, though. (She doesn't really feel like being harassed while making that deadbeat take care of his brat.)

A tiny, newborn wolf-dog pup is settled on the clan head's front stoop, a note left in scent (it's me and I'm annoyed), and a shinobi finally lays eyes on her -

She looks up, grins, and vanishes.

Permalink Mark Unread

-- it's not long before her nice, comforting warmth is interrupted. No, completely taken away from her.

It's violent and shocking and really really awful. She finds she can't think properly. Everything is so much.

Permalink Mark Unread

The midwife cleans her and hands her off to her mom soon enough, who wraps her chakra around her baby in a soothing blanket, crooning a lullaby and resolutely ignoring the people outside shouting about a wolf god.

Permalink Mark Unread

She still has no idea what's going on, but something -- someone? -- is holding her and making it better and that's really all that matters right now.

She's never had a mother before, a distant thought.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her new mom certainly doesn't seem inclined to let her go - the embrace is loving, but not soft, fang and claw turned outwards.

(The lullaby is similar, listing things a mother dog fights and kills to protect her litter, going all the way up to the great gods themselves, teeth bared against a hostile world.)

Permalink Mark Unread

-- comforting. It calls to something primal within her, something that never truly goes away. It's different now, new but still familiar.

She cries now. Even more overwhelmed. But happy.

Permalink Mark Unread

The clan does eventually calm down, and people begin coming in to talk to Tsume while she rocks her baby. A tiny Kiba toddles in, hand held by his sister Hana, to stare at the baby.

(Tsume decides to keep and raise the wolf-dog. It smells like one of them, probably a child of a less careful nin-dog, and it feels fitting, to raise the pup alongside her own daughter.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She can feel -- sense -- others nearby. It's hard to move, and she doesn't particularly want to, but she tries to pay attention anyway. Reach out to them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsume makes a delighted sound and reaches back.

Permalink Mark Unread

!!!!

Her limbs are so heavy, never having supported her own weight before. She tries to hold tight and --

sleepy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her mom croons her to sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

She goes easily. Filled with strange, new feelings and emotions.

She can't wait to live this life.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her mom carries the new human pup with her everywhere, and when the wolf-dog pup starts tumbling after them she laughs and carries that pup along, too.

She's off from missions while on maternity leave, so the pups can have the experience of being hauled to clan meetings and councils - they're a bit of a pain but the look on everyone's face at having to deal with her is worth it - and training. She considers getting a genin team, and chuckles at the thought of training them with a baby on her back.

Sounds fun, and it'll effectively extend her leave, so she signs up for the next graduation.

Kiba's getting too big to think being carried everywhere by his mom's neat. He instead runs about with the pups his age, toddling in and out of trouble at quite impressive speeds.

She talks to the pups, too, nearly constantly, and her nin-dog Kuromaru teaches both the dog tongue.

She notices gradually that the wolf-dog pup seems to have slowed down on aging after leaving 'entirely helpless', shrugs, figures who even knows with nin-dogs and nin-wolves-who-might-be-gods.

Tsume also turns over names in her head, eager for her baby's first word - when the pup will be officially brought into the clan, and granted a human name.

Permalink Mark Unread

She finds this all fascinating and spends all of her time observing the world around her.

Her clan is the best clan. Filled with so many interesting people and hounds. She feels like she has a pack again. Except this time it feels right. They're family. She loves them.

She misses her dad and Klaus and Hayley and Hope and Tyler and Stefan. But they help so much.

She picks up the language quickly, she knew a little Japanese before, but she was no where near fluent. She has fun in the attempt of actually producing her own words, it comes out as babbling nonsense, but it's fun and she needs to practice.

Eventually, while ruminating on something for a while, she reaches up and pulls on her moms hair to get her attention.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, pup?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, she will get this right. And her body will obey her.

She reaches down to her wolf, holding them tight and says, pronouncing her words clearly and deliberately, "In-a-zu-ma."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsume grins.

"Saving that one up, huh?" she teases, then scoops both pups up and declares, "You two can have your name party together! Does Inazuma have ideas on yours?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Grrrr!" She giggles.

Inazuma doesn't say much of anything.

Permalink Mark Unread

Inazuma snuggles closer and starts nipping at Juliet's foot instead.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think the records office won't let me put 'Grrrr' on your registration, unfortunately. Quite silly of them."

And she starts back home.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tsu-me?" She suggests. Her mom's name is pretty.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm... Kids should get their own names. How about Raizume?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Raizume," she sounds out, curious. She doesn't know what it means.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Means 'next claw' or 'lightning claw'. The tsu in my name becomes a zu when it's the back part of a word."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. She didn't know that, she's still learning.

"Lightning?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lightning causes thunder. Thunder is the boom when it rains."

Permalink Mark Unread

Inazuma perks up and growls playfully.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or maybe the sky wolf is going grrrrrr because she's telling the ground wolf to leave her little lighting alone."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles and hugs her mama and her Inazuma.

"Little lightning!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsume tosses her in the air, catching her on the way down. "Little flying lightning!"

(She'll have to see about finding a lightning-natured trainer for Raizume eventually; the pup's dad was probably a Kumo shinobi, after all.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She screams with excitement and starts growling some more.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her mom growls back and nuzzles her nose.

Then, as they arrive at the compound: "Guess which pup had her first word!" she calls.

There's quite a cacophony of congratulations, from humans and dogs alike.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Inazuma!" she gifts them all.

Permalink Mark Unread

They flop into Kiba's lap in response.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiba is very impressed! Naming a pup is a good use of a first word!

He clumsily pats Inazuma and says, "Inuzuka Inazuma!" in a delighted tone.

Permalink Mark Unread

Their response is some more nibbling!

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume snuggles her mom some more. Snuggling, she has decided, is the one of the best new parts of her existence.

Permalink Mark Unread

Happy mom snuggles!

And, later that day: the name party, with a not sweet pastry sort of thing both Raizume and Inazuma can safely eat, and a show of Raizume giving away and receiving little gifts (Tsume lets her help pick the little gifts, from a collection of foods. She mostly gets 'future wishes' in return - things like little charms blessed by a mountain priest, books, toys safe for both dog and human, and red stripes painted on her cheeks by her grandmother so she looks like her mom.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume loves all the attention and giving out all the gifts. She tries to tailor them to the right people, giving them things she knows they would like.

She wiggles out of her mom's snuggles and finds the closest mirror to poke at her face and the markings there.

Permalink Mark Unread

They're really very similar - two upside down triangles in bright red, one on either cheek - and don't smudge on being poked. She doesn't have her mom's highlights around the eyes, but most people don't.

Permalink Mark Unread

She likes them, it reminds her of --

-- she stops short and looks up at her mom again, startled.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her mom is grinning down at her, the movement emphasizing her own fang marks.

"You're an Inuzuka proper now, pup," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

-- she's so stupid. She had this nagging sense of familiarity even before she was reborn but now...

"Inuzaka of... Konoha?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes pup! We're in Konoha!"

Permalink Mark Unread

That's... everything makes so much more sense now. Her brother is Kiba of Team Eight. From Naruto.

She's been reborn as an Inuzuka in Konoha.

That's... her life has always been weird. In this life and the last. She'd been a vampire-werewolf hybrid. But this is beyond even that.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You okay, pup?"

Permalink Mark Unread

This is really a lot. But she nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

Scoop hug, and letting the pup choose if she wants to go back around people - Kiba was never shy, but Hana sometimes got overwhelmed by crowds.

Permalink Mark Unread

Inazuma yelps and pulls Kiba over to Raizume and Tsume.

Permalink Mark Unread

He can hug her and be the best big brother and growl at anyone who bothers her!

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles at him and cuddles him too.
He's not some fictional character. He's real and he's her brother.

She looks up at her mom. "You're shinobi?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yup. You will be, too, someday."

(She'd been moderately worried, actually, when Rai didn't talk by the time most shinobi children do, but she's heard of kids hiding their abilities when they're still unsure before, so, hey, her kids: the smartest and sneakiest in the bunch.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods seriously. "I'll protect you. And Kiba and Hana."

Permalink Mark Unread

Awwwwwww.

"And we'll do the same! That's what the food you gave out means, that you'll provide for the clan, and the gifts we give you show that we'll provide for your future."

Permalink Mark Unread

More snuggles.

It wasn't really real before. The future danger -- the apocalypse. She had no insight. But now with the knowledge she has, it feels pressing. It's real.

"Love you, mama."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Love you too, my little lightning," Tsume says.

"Love you mostest!" Kiba insists, wriggling.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume shakes her head.

"I have all the mostests."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Noooooo, I love you more!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I said it first. First wins."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But I'm bigger!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm spirit-big."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's dumb!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Still true."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Grrrrrrrrr."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Grrrr!" a little louder.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Rawr!" at the top of his lungs.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's so much louder than she can be, so instead she jumps at him, still growling.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wrassling!

Permalink Mark Unread

He's older and bigger but she has Inazuma.

Permalink Mark Unread

-- who licks his face.

Permalink Mark Unread

Puppy kisses!!!

Kiba takes this as a truce and licks Rai's face.

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles and snuggles close to him, making little puppy noises.

"Best Kiba."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Best Rai!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Snugglesnugglesnugglesnuggle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsume chuckles and scoops her little hellions up.

The party winds down, soon enough, everyone aware of the need to not overwork toddlers, and Tsume lays them to sleep.

Rai starts getting more focused attention in the days and months and years to come, clan members helping her with words, with walking and running and playing, with working alongside Inazuma and other kids (there is a tremendous focus on collaboration games, rather than competition games - turn-based story-telling; group obstacles and puzzles; races where what matters is when the last team member crosses, not the first, so everyone who's smart hangs near the back to help out the younger and slower players. Even the play fights - outside of spontaneous wrestling of course - are often group affairs, one entire age group against a smaller number of older kids or rarely teens, and more than once if Rai starts wrestling Kiba or Hana in a public place a younger kid will jump in on her side, shrieking in laughter, until whatever little argument turns into a full-on brawl. This seems unusual, for Konoha - Tsume takes her to the parks, too, and most non-Inuzuka kids want to see who's fastest or smartest or strongest or best).

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume is definitely once again reminded of a werewolf pack. She loves it. It's so... freeing being able to let loose that wildness that she was always taught to hide. She loved her father, but he was constantly terrified of people finding out about her, about the werewolf thing, that she was never allowed to play with other kids and be herself.

She excels tremendously in all physical activities. It's different from being a werewolf, the energy coming from somewhere else. She supposes that has to do with chakra and the natural taijutsu skill she picked up. She was always really athletic anyway, even before she was a hybrid. But this was definitely different. She picks up on all the tricks and reasons behind their activities, and goes out of her way to excel there too. Helping everyone out and setting a good example. She wants her clan to be good and talented and strong. They need to be to survive whats coming.

When they're at the park, she keeps her eye out for anyone else familiar, but otherwise ignores the non-Inuzuka kids. She doesn't have time for everyone, there are only so many hours in a day and she's got so much life to live.

Permalink Mark Unread

Most of the kids ignore her back. (There's a few random Uchiha kids, sometimes - both the Inuzuka and Uchiha live near the edge of the village, in their own isolated compounds. It's hard to tell which ones are which, there's more than one around Kiba's age and the Uchiha dress their boys and girls the same. There's the children of minor clanless shinobi who live around here. There's a handful of civilian-born hopefuls.)

There's a sad little boy, who seems to wander between playgrounds to lurk on the edges and mope and occasionally try to play if someone isn't mean to him.

(Tsume never warns them away, and will keep a hawk-like eye out for anyone being a shithead to Kushina's brat, but he's new and weird and poorly socialized and an outsider, so most of the Inuzuka kids will hesitantly try to play with him once or twice, then end up in a bad argument that everyone takes wrong, and then drift off.)

Permalink Mark Unread

-- speaking of familiar. Raizume walks up to him one afternoon and hands him the ball she was playing with.

"I'm gonna go over there," she points to a semi far away distance, "and you haveta throw it to me really hard."

Permalink Mark Unread

!!!

A friend!

(Maybe she's pretending like that meanie from the orphanage, but maybe she's not...)

"Okay!"

He is not a good thrower ahhhhhhh he's gonna miss and she's gonna HATE HIM -

And when she gets there, he throws as hard and good as he can...

And misses. He doesn't throw the ball hard enough, and it goes way off to the left.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume laughs loudly and chases after it really quick, trying to catch it before it hits the ground.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're fast!" he says, but frowns. "The ball was bad and threw off my aim."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If it's bad that means you have to figure out how it's bad and throw it different."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...How?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It went left so maybe you should throw it right."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay? ...You still want to play with me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah! I wanna play ball!"

Also get to know the protagonist and key player in the coming apocalypse. But playing catch was really fun too.

Permalink Mark Unread

!!!!!!

They can keep playing ball! Naruto remains really bad at it, but he's enthusiastic and actually fairly good at correcting with relatively few nudges. He doesn't think like a lot of kids do, his brain comes at ideas from sideways and backwards and above but never the way you're supposed to go, and no one's taught him how to try a bunch of ideas instead of just slamming himself against the One Way, so he's not good at that, either.

He's loud and brash and has a much younger kid's understanding of boundaries, too, but he doesn't need to be told twice not to do or say something accidentally mean, even if he sometimes mumbles about people being weird.

Eventually Rai does have to go home. Naruto droops, then, hesitantly, "Will I see you again?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume nods and hugs him.

"You're nice and funny and remind me of my brother. Next time I'll bring him and we can build a secret fort!"

Permalink Mark Unread

!!! Hugs!!!

"That sounds great! Oh, I'm Naruto!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm Inuzuka Raizume. Thank you for playing with me, Naruto."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Heh. It's cool."

"I'll see you later, Raizume!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She waves, picks up her ball and runs back to her mom.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her mom scoops her and takes her home.

On the way, "You made a new friend today, huh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She quits growling at a random pedestrian and looks up at her mom.

"He looked lonely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He did. A lot of people have trouble being his friend, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't care what other people think. I gotta teach him how to play catch better."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're a great teacher! He's lucky to have you." (Rai certainly has plenty of experience, from 'supervising' her mom teaching genin.)

"If someone's mean to you because you're nice to him, and they're bigger than you and the other pups together, you let me know, alright? I'll set them straight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll try really hard to do it myself first. I'm scary!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The scariest!"

Permalink Mark Unread

To prove this even more she will grrr and start nomming on her mom's shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

Overdramatic fake flailing! "Ah, I am defeated by the mighty lightning!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes thunder noises and starts giggling. Her mom is so good.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her mom would say she has the best kids!

Permalink Mark Unread

Naruto has a freak out when Raizume doesn't show up the next day, or the next, and gets spinning in his head until she shows up the week after, and then he feels stupid because duh, a lot of kids only come to the park sometimes.

Permalink Mark Unread

She runs up to him, pulling Kiba by his hand behind her.

"Hi!!! I missed you!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I miss you too!"

Fort? (Naruto has had a whole week to think up Secret Fort ideas, including sneaking into the tiny orphanage library and then the bigger public library to look at building pictures. Many of them are a bit too ambitious. All of them are enthusiastic. Most include a drawbridge, which he practiced making out of sticks and strings at the orphanage. Drawbridges are cool.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume is so pleased and has a lot of her own ideas. She took a few college architecture classes and design is one of her passions. She makes sure to pack a lot of paint, because they can't have a fort without it being pretty and she likes any excuse to do art things.

She also makes sure to bring a full packed lunch for Naruto and also face paint because they have to eat some time and building things is hard work and also any excuse to paint someones face is also a thing she abuses.

She may have gone a bit overboard.

Permalink Mark Unread

No such thing!

(Naruto is overjoyed at the paint. This is going to be the most colorful secret fort ever.)

While Rai's off making friends, Tsume faces an increasing number of worries - all in the meetings her children aren't allowed into.

The Uchiha are getting restless (with decent reason, she thinks, though of course they're expressing everything as dickishly as possible), the village is getting angry - at the Uchiha, at the Nine Tails' host, at the concessions to Kumo, at the entire world, bitter and seething and ready.

It fades back, sometimes, the deep hatred beneath the surface turning into a tight tension among the adults. It spills over to their kids - most still don't like Naruto, even with him being taught the Inuzuka version of manners. Most Uchiha kids play on their own, not really interacting with other clans.

She scowls when she hears a rumor about Itachi being accepted into the ANBU Black Ops at such a young age - the fuck Sarutobi, she's read the founding charter of Konoha and banning that sort of shit was why her clan signed up, but no one remembers, no one sees a damn problem with throwing their children into the meat grinder -

It's not all stress. Her clan's thriving. Her kids are great. Kiba starts the Academy, and apparently is competing for last place with Naruto. (She doesn't have time, not anymore, so she arranges for a cousin to sit with him and go over everything as many times as needed).

Then, a few weeks into the Academy's second quarter, she's woken by a deep sense of wrong and an ANBU at her window.

She doesn't come home for a week.

When she does, she pulls her children close - Hana, who's Itachi's age, Kiba who's Sasuke's classmate, Raizume who's brave and clever and practically a guaranteed candidate for early graduation and so so small.

(There's a gaping wound, where a founding clan used to be.)

(Sasuke won't wake up for another three weeks.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course she hadn't forgotten about the Uchiha. She hasn't forgotten anything -- the perks of her great and also magically enhanced memory -- but she couldn't do anything about it. Th massacre is such a huge event in her memories, preventing it,or doing anything to put it off course was... she has so many regrets.

So many people dead. Sasuke will never be the same. She hasn't even met him, but she knows him. She related to him so much back when he was just fiction, he was her favourite character. But, still --

She clings to her mama and cries and cries and cries.

"I'm sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsume's crying too, and Hana, and Kiba.

It's a crying sort of situation.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll do better. I promise."

She will. She has to.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, honey, oh, it's not your fault we broke the world, I'm so sorry..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I didn't do enough. I can do better. I'm gonna grow strong and be smarter and think better and save everyone."

Permalink Mark Unread

Such tight hugs. "My sweet little lightning," she starts, then chokes up because oh gods.

Permalink Mark Unread

So many hugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Things are a bit more somber for a while after that. Naruto reports Sasuke withdrawing and getting sad; Kiba reports him getting into fights with other kids left and right. Mostly Naruto, but also a few others. Sasuke seems to have gone from 'shy and sensitive' to 'cruel and cold.'

Tsume takes extra care in training her kids - and in making sure they are kids. She refuses point blank to have Raizume admitted early to the Academy, no matter her genius. She makes sure Hana knows she doesn't have to push herself - Hana thinks for a bit and confides, quietly, that she thinks she'll be happy at chuunin, as a clan vet, she doesn't think she wants to be head even though she knows the clan needs someone -

Tsume hugs her, says, yes of course. They'll figure something out - Kiba or Rai or a cousin as the next head, family is family is family and the Inuzuka aren't picky about the lineage of who acts as their face to the world.

Eventually things lighten back up a bit. People move on, and put things out of their minds. The empty places where the Uchiha were get eroded away.

Eventually, it's Rai's turn for the Academy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizme would have liked to have gotten to the Academy earlier, but relents after she understands how much her mom feels about the issue. So she spends her time working very very hard, sticking close to her mom and her Kiba and her Hana and her Naruto and thinking about the future.

When the time finally arrives, she's brimming at the rim with excitement and energy and sheer eagerness. Finally.

Permalink Mark Unread

The entrance exams are a breeze. Staying at the top of the class is a breeze. Apparently, the system won't let you skip grades - even though Raizume easily could, between her last life's experiences and this life's perfect memory and hard work. Instead, you can study at home, and apply to take the graduation exam early (how kids with civilian - or simply busy - parents are meant to make it is never explained), while remaining with your age cohort otherwise.

Tsume puts her foot down against Raizume graduating before age ten (coincidentally the same year Kiba will graduate).

Permalink Mark Unread

She does not complain, but she's unhappy about it and seeks to overachieve to the nth degree. She's showing off a bit, but does actually want to do her best and make her clan proud. Plus graduating with Kiba and Naruto seems like a good choice. Their class will be involved in a lot of the plot and she needs to be a part of that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsume picks up on the unhappiness and arranges tutors - drags in someone to teach her more advanced math, see if she has any aptitude for sealing (which is somewhere between math and writing and art), and more subjects like geopolitics. Starts her training herself in elemental release, right alongside her genin. (Tsume is fire and earth and not particularly good at lightning, but she has friends and can call in favors if that's Raizume's path). Makes games of it, of course.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume picks everything up quickly, hungry for things to keep her mind and body busy. She'll go insane if she doesn't. Sealing is interesting, and it quickly becomes something she spends a lot of her free time working on. She can get frustrated with the math, math is so boring, but the other aspects of sealing make up for it. It's something she hasn't encountered before, it keeps her mind engaged and thinking and creating.

She has no patience for politics, but makes sure to dedicate a decent amount of time to it. It will definitely come in handy later, with the fighting and wars ahead.

With no surprise she her affinity is lightning. But her second affinity is water.

"Is that normal, mama? Having two elements that you don't have."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is, sometimes. Affinities are weird, and only kind of genetic. Your father also used lightning, and might have had a water affinity, too, so I'm not surprised if you inherited that from him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You haven't spoken about him much."

She doesn't particularly care. It's hard to care about people she knows nothing about.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Didn't really know him much. Met him on a mission, just long enough after Kiba's dad left, and, well..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Were you in Kumogakure?"

It's not like she hadn't noticed she was darker then her mother and both her siblings. She's pretty sure she looks exactly like she did in her previous life, which was not what she expected. So she'd taken the time to study it up during one of her geopolitical lessons.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not that time. We were both in Water Country where we didn't belong. He was from Kumo, though, even if he kept trying to pretend to be a Kiri-nin."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I bet you didn't believe him for a second. Did you save his life and sweep him off his feet?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Got him out from a Kiri patrol that'd gotten suspicious - audacity is the secret to lying a lot of the time, and I have that in spades. Convinced them I was his superior officer there to take him in for questioning. My jurisdiction, obviously."

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume laughs.

"I'll keep that in mind for when I get my own missions. Maybe I'll fall in love too and run away and have a fairytale romance. Live in a castle! With a moat. And a dragon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Inazuma might get jealous if you got a dragon," she says, laughing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe they could be a dragon." She looks down at them. "Can you turn into a dragon, Zuma?"

Permalink Mark Unread

They growl at Raizume, nipping at her feet.

I'm better than any stupid dragon.

Permalink Mark Unread

"A wolf-dog-dragon would be pretty silly," Tsume says, nodding at Inazuma. "Dogs are neater, anyways."

Permalink Mark Unread

And prettier. Look at my fur. It's the prettiest.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Prettiest of all the puppies!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Definitely! Dragons are all dry and scaly. Not fluffy at all."

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume pets her pretty puppy and looks up at her mom.

"Do you think he's still alive? The Kumo-nin?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't really know. He probably doesn't like me much anymore, anyways." Given how much she'd stolen from him, she wouldn't be surprised.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume giggles and hugs her mom.

"You're so cool. Best mom."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hah," she says, laughing. "You're the best youngest daughter!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"In the whole world," she says, wise and knowing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"In every world there ever could be!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles and hugs her.

"Do you think Kiba and I will be teammates?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unfortunately that's pretty unlikely. Family's usually not put with family - they like to diversify teams a bit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can you guess who I'll be placed with?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm. There's a lot that goes into it - personalities, existing friendships and enemies, fighting style, who's going to need which jounin. You're very up-front, and more of a front-liner than a tracker, so you'll probably be on a generalist or powerhouse team. You don't know anyone in that year other than Naruto, your brother, and distantly some of your brother's friends, so relationships unlikely to impact things a lot."

Permalink Mark Unread

That kinda sounds like Team Kakashi. Which... could be a problem? But could also be exactly where she needs to be.

"I do love punching people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've noticed! My little lightning bolt hits hard."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not that little. My body will match my mind soon. And I'll be a shinobi."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I pity your poor jounin-sensei."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't wait."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I bet."

And soon enough, it is in fact finally time for Raizume to take the graduation test.

Permalink Mark Unread

She gets there early, ever the over achiever, and picks a seat right up the front.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's not the youngest there, because hope springs eternal, but she's the first one done. By a long shot.

She's allowed to leave the written exam as soon as she finishes, and then run through taijutsu, weapons, and the basic three techniques.

Permalink Mark Unread

She excels at the taijutsu and laughs with joy the whole time. Maybe not a good practice to take, but she's so excited! The weapons and basic three are a breeze too but she doesn't think much on it. They're boring compared to actual proper hand-to-hand combat.

Permalink Mark Unread

The scores take a week to be posted - publicly, with rankings included. Raizume's on top, with Uchiha Sasuke ranked number two, Yamanaka Ino number three, and so on.

Kiba's ranked fourth to last.

Naruto's ranked last - and above the score threshold.

Permalink Mark Unread

...that's unexpected. And totally not what was supposed to happen.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Congratulations, you two! What do you say we go out to eat?" Tsume calls. Kiba cheers and punches the air.

Permalink Mark Unread

Right as Naruto barrels over, wrapping his arms around Raizume in a bear hug. "I passed!!!" he exclaims. "Thank you so much Rai!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs and hugs him back.

"I'm pretty sure you did all the work."

Permalink Mark Unread

Naruto's a pretty good hugger! "You taught me tons, though." Then he spots Kiba and Tsume. "Heh. Hey Ms. Rai's mom! You guys celebrating?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, figured I'd feed these two pits at some point." Inviting him seems awkward, not seems mean...

Permalink Mark Unread

"You guys have fun, Ichiraku promised me all I could eat if I passed!" he says, disentangling from the hug and waving. He looks a bit sad, but not as depressed as he would've six years ago.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope. You've had enough ramen for a whole lifetime, you're coming with us. Real food and puppies and music. It's gonna be great. We need to celebrate together."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're not stopping me from redeeming that, you know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can try. But I'm pretty sure you're gonna come out the winner regardless."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, if you want to try to do the impossible, I'm not going to stop you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am the definition of impossible. Try me." She takes his hand and pulls him along.

Okay, so she totally screwed up here. Which was probably foreseeable. Giving him all those tips and training really counted for something. But she couldn't just leave Naruto all alone and without any support. He's her friend and she loves him.

Permalink Mark Unread

He laughs, and lets her pull him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, Naruto, bet I can eat more than you," Kiba says, ignoring his mom's groan.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're on!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Naruto, you have not witnessed the amount Kiba can put away. I'm pretty sure he's a black hole in human form."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No clue what that is, but you haven't seen me going."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's like this huge hole in space that nothing can escape from. Not even light. We call him Black-Hole-Kiba. So you have a lot to live up to," she teases.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure. Right. That's definitely true."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course it's true. I am a paragon of truth and virtue."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiba starts choking on his laughter.

Permalink Mark Unread

She bumps into him, trying to push him over with her shoulder.

"You're supposed to support my lies, big brother. Solidarity."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm feeling more of a bro code with Naruto right now," he says, bumping back harder. Akamaru yips in agreement.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Betrayal." She gasps and turns to their mom. "We gotta get a new Kiba now. The old one doesn't work good anymore."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry, pup, his warranty expired."

Permalink Mark Unread

She sighs dramatically. "Suppose we're stuck with him then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Like a burr."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs and bumps him again. "Who do you think you're gonna be teamed up with?" she asks them both.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dunno. I did well on tracking and like survival. A team around that'd be boring, though. Don't really have a dream team."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You, me, and Sakura-chan!" Naruto chirps. "That'd be great!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd pretty sure Sakura would murder you, Naruto. Well, at least until you overpower her with your Everything. But even then..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What, no faith in me? I'm wounded."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can tell. You look so downtrodden."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm utterly heartbroken. I shall never recover, instead spending my days wasting away - "

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles and tackles him.

"You're such a bad liar."

Permalink Mark Unread

He rolls with the tackle and tries to put her in a headlock and give her a noogie. "Not as bad as you."

Permalink Mark Unread

She struggles in his arms, and quickly breaks out to jump away from him.

"Not the hair! I just made it all fancy."

Permalink Mark Unread

He exchanges a glance with Kiba -

Permalink Mark Unread

And they both pounce, right for the hair.

Permalink Mark Unread

!!!

She quickly jumps onto a roof and starts running towards home.

"I am the number one rookie! You'll never get me!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Inazuma jumps up too and runs with her.

Running!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wrong way, pup! Restaurant's this way! Unless you want us to eat without you?" Tsume calls, as Kiba and Naruto give chase.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll never surrender!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Guess I'm having a nice quiet meal all on my lonesome, then..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Noooooooo," Naruto calls, fake-pouting as he abandons the chase, Kiba following.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Once again I am victorious," she says as she jumps down.

Permalink Mark Unread

Inazuma growls at her.

No, I wanna run.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can all run around after food, how about, cub?"

Permalink Mark Unread

They look down at Tsume expectingly.

Kuromaru too.

Permalink Mark Unread

He snorts. "I'd be glad to beat you any day, cub," he says, while Tsume laughs.

"Come on, pups, the food won't eat itself," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

They ignore his words and jump down, satisfied with that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume jumps onto her mom's back.

"Where are we going, mama?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was thinking yakiniku! Something for everyone."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just so long as it's not Ichiraku's, I'm happy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll convert you one of these days," Naruto says, but obligingly follows Tsume towards the free food.

Permalink Mark Unread

She continues to cling to her mom's back, not bothering to walk.

"I wanna be in a team with Ino. She's so pretty and creepy and I think she'd be a great teammate."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like it. Though usually when there's a Yamanaka, Akimichi, and Nara all in the same year they get put together."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's so not fair," she pouts. "Ino is so cool, I wanna be her friend."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You could just talk to her, dweeb."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I tried! But she's so pretty, I couldn't do it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can't relate."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sakura-chan's pretty like that!" Naruto declares.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can you talk to Sakura? Or do you run away like I do with Ino?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can talk! And then she gets mad and hits me, but not in like a friendly wrassle way, she got really mad when I laughed and tried to play."

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes a face.

"Her loss. You're awesome, Naruto. Anyone that can't see that isn't worth being around."

Permalink Mark Unread

He doesn't seem to know what to say at first, settling for, "Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles at him. "You're welcome."

Permalink Mark Unread

And feelings are icky so he bumps her shoulder, but in a friendly way, as they're arriving at the restaurant.

Permalink Mark Unread

Inazuma nips at his heels and runs in ahead of them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume giggles and then jumps off her mom's back to find the best seat.

Permalink Mark Unread

The restaurant's a bit crowded - apparently Ino, Shikamaru, and Chouji decided to celebrate here too, bringing their families with them - Chouji's siblings take up two tables on their own, and Ino's laughing with Shikamaru's little sister about something.

Tsume gets them a table, shouts some greeting at the adults over the noise.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume does not blush and instead goes and quickly takes the best seat.

She will not get embarrassed over a pretty girl. She's totally better than that. She is! Plus she's ten. Technically....

She takes the menu and hides behind it instead.

Permalink Mark Unread

One of Ino's older sisters smirks at her.

The main attraction is platters of meat and vegetables you can cook at your table, but there's also pre-cooked food. Mostly meat dishes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh no she's been caught. She needs to play it cool.

She tucks herself close to Naruto and hides behind his shoulder.

"Why This."

Permalink Mark Unread

He laughs and then bounds over to Chouji and promptly makes himself the center of attention.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ugh. Boys.

She follows behind him tentatively.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ino's sister whispers something in her ear, making Ino jab her in the stomach with her elbow and wave sort of awkwardly at Rai.

Permalink Mark Unread

She waves back also very awkwardly.

Why is this so hard. She never had any trouble talking to people in her last life... she also never really interacted with kids her own age until she was well into her late teens. But still.

Permalink Mark Unread

Inazuma huffs, nearly knocks Raizume over from behind and walks over to them.

Appreciate how pretty I am.

Permalink Mark Unread

Definitely the prettiest pup, is the agreement.

(Seating ends up getting rearranged into a kid/adult rather than clan split.)

Permalink Mark Unread

With attention focused on Inazuma, Raizume sticks close to her brother and Naruto.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ino will eventually detangle, sort of sidle over, and say, "Hey! Raizume, right? Congrats on the top spot."

Permalink Mark Unread

More blushing!

"Thank you! You got -- uh -- third, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah! Top kunoichi in my year - I'd say overall, you seem more 'menace' than traditional kunoichi," Ino says, voice slightly teasing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why menace?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Please tell me you remember biting Shikamaru."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's not menace, that's a valid contribution to society. He needed to be bit."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "I'll give you that."

Permalink Mark Unread

Pretty!!

"My mom said you're going to be in a team with him and Choji. Are you excited?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "Eh. I've known them forever, and it kinda feels like - you know, this path a bunch've people go down, and it's obvious where to go, and. Well. A shakeup might be fun, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What would you do? If you could do anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

Laugh. "Oh wow. No clue." Sort of awkward shrug. "I mean, don't know. I like learning stuff - not really like Sakura. More like how stuff relates? Like, this flower with that, that person with this... Don't think that's very usable in a fight, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Have you tried sealing? I've been learning it since I started the academy. It's really interesting and complicated and connective. Brings in a bunch of different things together. It's fun to puzzle out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. Might look into that, sounds neat. Thanks!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome!"

Permalink Mark Unread

The conversations around the table drift on, people mostly starting talking about school but quickly getting into a massive variety of other topics - books, they're talking about putting in a movie theatre, wow is it unseasonably hot - without much of a common thread or anything. Shikamaru pretty much only talks to Chouji, but everyone else is friendly.

Kiba and Naruto have their promised eating contest - and the Akimichi kids join. Chouji's third-oldest sister reigns supreme, laughing when even her brother gives up.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume mostly keeps to herself, takes out her artbook and starts on a new sketch. This whole socialising thing is cool and everything, but... okay she just doesn't care much about these near-strangers. So. Art!

Permalink Mark Unread

People leave her to it.

Eventually people have other places to go and the crowd starts dispersing, faster as conversions die down and food settles.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's not paying much attention, too caught up in her work. And her thoughts.

What if this whole Naruto-passing-the-exam shifts the known future dramatically? He was supposed to go off and get the forbidden scroll and learn the shadow clone jutsu. Will he still learn it now? Unlikely, since its forbidden... And what about Mizuki? He's a traitor and will still be around. Will he still try to steal the scroll? Should she tell someone about that???

Permalink Mark Unread

She looks up at Naruto.

He was also supposed to find out about the Nine Tailed Fox. Did he find out another way? Or will they just continue to let him live in ignorance.

Permalink Mark Unread

The world doesn't see fit to answer her thoughts, unless Naruto excitedly saying "bye" to everyone counts.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsume approaches their table, Hana having apparently shown up during the dinner and tagging along.

Hana goes ahead, to hug her siblings, congratulate them, and apologize about being late - clinic had a quick emergency. Dog's fine, but very thoroughly scolded about stuff he shouldn't eat.

"Ready to head home, pups?" Tsume asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume shakes off her stupor, waves goodbye to everyone and hugs her sister. She would have liked Hana's company during dinner, but her job is important, so she understands.

-- at her mom's words she gets a sudden idea.

"Can I walk Naruto home, mama?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, pup."

Permalink Mark Unread

She looks at Naruto.

"If that's okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah!" he replies, nodding with a broad grin, then, to Kiba, "See you at assignments!" (Kiba waves back.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She hugs everyone goodbye and tries not to fidget or show any sign of her rising nerves.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks for walking with me," Naruto says on the walk back. It's getting to be officially the end of the day, but there's still people out and about, and he has to swerve to not run into people a few times.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, you're pretty much my best friend. So it's my duty. But, uh, I may also... I need to talk to you. In private. Preferably somewhere kinda-super as secure as we can find? Without leaving the village."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's not my apartment, then... Or the Hokage monument... There's this one weird shrine I'm pretty sure no one's watching because there's glowy stuff around it and not even bugs inside, but it was really old, and super dirty before I cleaned it up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, your apartment is super not the place. Is the shrine far, do we need to run?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's outskirts? Like, the back outskirts, out behind the monument. Running might not hurt - and hey, didn't we want to have that race?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Race! Finally.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's do it. Lead the way."

Permalink Mark Unread

He'll give a point they've both been to that's near-ish the shrine as an end point, then, and "Onetwothree go!"

(He's fast, but not Inuzuka fast).

Permalink Mark Unread

Inazuma is off. Racing ahead of them with a burst of great speed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume isn't far behind. She loves running. It reminds her so much of her previous life. It's not the same, she'll never experience that feeling of running as a wolf, four legs and wind in her fur. But it's enough. Her troubles and fears and anxieties briefly fade away until it's just her and the freedom of letting go.

Permalink Mark Unread

They don't beat Naruto by too much, at least, if you ask him.

The destination is a nice clearing by one of the little streams that eventually flow into the Naka River - there's still one of their old 'secret' forts in a particularly sturdy tree, and a deer path cuts across a shallow part of the stream.

Naruto's laughing when he arrives, not at all out of breath, and says, "Come on, the shrine's nearby - I was exploring out from here when I found it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"This place is great. We should come out here more often."

Permalink Mark Unread

Inazuma leaves them to go chase the deer.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is! I think some other kids moved into the fort, actually - we should scare them someday."

He'll lead the way to the shrine at a walk, content to just enjoy the evening woods.

Permalink Mark Unread

She walks alongside him, not wanting to ruin this.

She's a little scared. Which... Isn't a very familiar feeling. At least not in this lifetime. It's kind of ridiculous considering the world they live in. Wars, and death and child soldiers.

It feels like they're on the edge of a cliff. She doesn't want to take another step.

But...

Permalink Mark Unread

He doesn't mention her mood, but does catch her hand and squeeze companionably.

They get to the shrine soon enough. It's old, wooden, and beginning to fall apart in the sheer damp that pervades Konoha - one side's sagging, and the roof's not as present as it should be. Still, there's obvious signs of someone working hard to repair it - braced beams, a few replaced boards, and the like. There's also faint glimpses of seals in the trees around it. There's an enormous Uzumaki spiral above the entrance, paint faded until there's only a few scraps of red in the cracks.

"I don't know if it keeps non-humans out, or anyone not-me out," Naruto says. "But I brought an injured squirrel in once and he couldn't get back out on his own, so it might be a good idea for me to hold your hand while crossing the barrier?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She squeezes his hand in response.

"This is really impressive, Naruto. You made this?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope! It was here." He goes quiet a bit. "Dunno much how seals work, but - I keep thinking. Maybe someone made it, and they made it so they could get through, and anyone related could get through, and..." He laughs, awkwardly.

"I have been fixing the building though! It was way worse when I found it, I thought there's probably spirits there 'cause abandoned temple, and they're probably really angry 'cause their house's broke, but then I thought I'd be angry if someone broke my house, but mostly sad, so I told them I'd fix their house up! ...Which might be the actual reason I can get through, if the spirits like me? Anyways, there's, like, one whole working shrine in all of Konoha, so I asked the priest there what to do about an old shrine, and she told me bunches."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The building looks great. You've done really well. With everything. No wonder they like you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw, thanks!" Hand-holding through the barrier, then - Raizume gets through just fine. "I'm hoping when we're genin I can get some more money, buy some proper supplies. Get it really nice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't wait to see it. Maybe I can paint a mural, if that's okay We could work on it together."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That'd be great! The paint does need a bunch of updating, and you're really good at forts. It's a lot of the same stuff, building-wise?"

A beat, and, "Anyways, you wanted to talk?" he asks, voice kind of nervous.

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods and bites her lip. Trying to find her words.

"I should -- I want to preface this by saying... you're one of the cleverest, nicest, most loyal and best people that I know. I trust you so much. I think you've already put so much good into the world and I know you're not going to ever stop. You're my best friend and I love you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is? Something wrong?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nothing's wrong. I just -- this is really deeply personal and it's going to be upsetting and I just -- I shouldn't be telling you this. It's a village secret. We're not supposed to talk about it. But technically I found out in a weird way and I was never really forbidden from saying anything. And we're shinobi now, they expect us to go out and fight and to kill for them. You deserve to know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What is it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You mother was Uzumaki Kushina, the host of the Nine Tailed Fox. While she was giving birth to you, and as a consequence of outside forces, it was released. Your father, the Fourth Hokage, had no choice but to seal away the Fox into you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How - what - the fuck?!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry. I didn't -- I didn't know how to say it better. It's -- I'm so sorry."

She wants to hug him she wants to take it back -- but she can't move.

Permalink Mark Unread

"How do you know that - why do you know that - do you know why - oh gods is that why everyone hates me - "

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't hate you. I could never hate you. They don't know you. You are not the Fox. You are Naruto and you are Good and Great and Perfect and they're idiots."

Permalink Mark Unread

He appears to be on the edge of hyperventilating!

Permalink Mark Unread

-- she hugs him. And holds him and tries to give him everything.

"I love you. I love you. You're going to be okay. I'm here."

Permalink Mark Unread

He calms down, slowly.

"I - I didn't know. Anything." Breath, and, "Thanks. For telling me." He's quiet, then: "The old man never did. You said it's a village secret... I guess you'd get in trouble if I yelled at him about it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I want to give him the benefit of the doubt..." she sighs. "I think he loves you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. But... You did me a really big favor," he says. "I shouldn't risk that." Hugs.

"Do... Do you know anything? About them, or what happened..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They knew your birth was going to be hard. They had measures set up. Secrecy, barriers, security -- everything. But Konoha's enemies found out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Do you know if those enemies are still around?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. They are. But they are beyond powerful. We're not there yet."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shaky nod. "I. Don't know what I want to do, but... We need to prepare, huh? Keep training."

Permalink Mark Unread

She leans against him, lending comfort.

"They want the Fox. So, yeah, a lot of prep and training."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lean. Serious nod. "We have two days until team assignments. We can spend it here, mostly, training and fixing the shrine some? I don't think the spirits will mind us getting strong."

"...We should train Kiba, too. I don't think he's good at keeping secrets, but... He's close to us. They said in class a lot of people go after your precious people first, and they said that's a reason to kill your emotions. But. I think it's a reason to be strong, and make everyone strong."

Permalink Mark Unread

She hugs him even more now.

"Yes. That would be great. And you're right. Emotions make us strong. Shutting them away leads to nothing but trauma and unhappiness."

Permalink Mark Unread

All the hugs!

"We'll be the strongest, definitely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I believe it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Excited hugs! Then he'll pull her around the shrine to show her everything, and properly 'introduce' her around to the spirits.

Permalink Mark Unread

They find Inazuma lying around, completely ignoring any sort of barriers or spirits.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your dog's weird," Naruto whispers to Rai.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wolf-dog. And technically they're not mine, I'm theirs."

Permalink Mark Unread

Both mine.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw, you're a sweetie," he tells Inazuma. (Do they want belly rubs? Naruto is an excellent supplier of belly rubs.)

Permalink Mark Unread

They roll over in response.

I'm the sweetest. Pet me.

Permalink Mark Unread

Very sweet wolf-dog now receiving many belly rubs!

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume gives him a hand, and tries to forget about the disaster that was and could have been. She really needs to develop some social skills one of these days.

Hindsight tells her that telling Naruto everyone in one go was a bad idea. Obviously. She's glad she did it and it's over with, but...

Tact. She needs it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Luckily Naruto's not particularly sensitive!

The next two days go well, though there's only so much they can polish even with a renewed zeal - they have been practicing together for years.

Naruto's practically vibrating out of his skin when team assignment day rolls around, grinning so wide his smile looks liable to float off his face into the sun.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume is excited too. She's been waiting for this day or her whole life. She manages to keep her outward calm, but inside she is jumping off the walls.

Permalink Mark Unread

Bouncing excitedly at everyone who won't outright stab him - which is everyone, they're well-socialized little future killers - seems to be Naruto's go-to method.

Eventually he vibrates into one of the only two adjacent open seats - next to Sasuke, who usually keeps a broad swath of 'don't even fucking try it' around him that basically only Naruto's impervious to.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke, on the other hand, simply very subtly rolls his eyes, glances at Raizume, sizes her (and her small stature, plus obvious Inuzuka status, plus shiny new headband), and nods seriously, which seems to be his version of small talk because he promptly goes back to ignoring them.

(He's actually ridiculously nervous but if he looks broody no one will notice.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume lets Sasuke ignore her. Which she has pretty much done for years. Her weird silly pre-this-life-fiction-crush and the fact that she knew about the massacre of his entire family before the fact left her in this weird space of "aaaa" and 'do not engage' that she's been practicing at for a while.

Instead she nudges Naruto and let's Inazuma jump onto their laps. They're too big at this point for just the one lap.

"Fingers crossed for Ino and Sakura?" she whispers to Naruto.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fingers crossed!" he whispers back. "And for each other!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume laughs softly.

"There is only three to a team, Naruto."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have a lot of fingers to cross!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She rolls her eyes, pets her puppy and waits for the announcements.

"Sakura wouldn't be so bad, I suppose. She's is also really pretty."

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a groan and a quiet "Please no," from a few rows behind them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume pretends she didn't hear that and continues to pet her puppy innocently.

Permalink Mark Unread

Iruka walks in shortly thereafter, and calls the class to attention. It takes him a while to get down the list, but -

"And Team Seven will be Uzumaki Naruto, Inuzuka Raizume, and Uchiha Sasuke."

Permalink Mark Unread

Naruto cheers and hugs Rai.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well.

She really should have expected that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Iruka yells at Naruto to settle down, then continues - Teams Eight and Ten are as last time, and then -

"And Haruno Sakura will be placed on Team Sesshi alongside Nara Shikaiten and Korona Rian."

(At Sakura's mutter of who, Iruka volunteers "A team from a prior year.")

They're given the instruction to disperse for lunch, then gather to meet their jounin-sensei in a given room one hour from now, to wait separately from the other teams.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I made up a lot of food for us," she says to Naruto, and then pauses and looks to Sasuke. "Enough for all of us. If you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks iffy about this 'other humans' thing. "I have my own food," is all he says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair enough. The offer persists though, if you change your mind."

Permalink Mark Unread

Slow nod. "Alright."

Permalink Mark Unread

Naruto squints at him, then, to Rai, "Your food's the best! Wanna find Kiba?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, though Akamaru will find us, if all else fails."

Permalink Mark Unread

Challenge?

Permalink Mark Unread

"We don't need you scaring them off, silly," Naruto says to Inazuma.

Permalink Mark Unread

More for us.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume pets her pretty, smart, talented and perfectly terrifying puppy.

"There's enough for all of us and more. I promise."

Permalink Mark Unread

They are all those things, it's true! They lick Raizume's face in approval and contentment.

-- and Naruto's too. To foster good manners.

Permalink Mark Unread

He laughs and scritches behind their ears.

To food and companionship!

Permalink Mark Unread

They find Kiba and Akamaru and eat many foods and celebrate their assignments. Inazuma is on their best behaviour, except for a few minutes in the middle there when they decide they want to race Akamaru and show off and prove that they are good puppies. Not that they need to prove it, but giving their humans the occasional reminder is good idea.

Permalink Mark Unread

The humans mostly just laugh at their antics. (Kiba's a bit iffy on being on Shino's team, but overall thinks it could've gone much worse - he at least doesn't get along too poorly with his. He expresses his sympathies for Naruto's assignment with Sasuke.)

Permalink Mark Unread

After lunch, Naruto leads the way in bouncing to their assignment room. Sasuke's already there, ignoring them, but Naruto's chattered at Raizume plenty so he starts excitedly talking Sasuke's ear off with wild speculations about their jounin-sensei, who isn't there yet.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume knows that they are probably going to be waiting a while, so saves some of their lunch for later.

She interrupts Naruto. "So I know we all kinda already know each other, especially Naruto and I. But we're a team now, we should reintroduce ourself in that context."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke nods slowly. "I don't know you much. You were the number one rookie, though. How old are you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ten. Mama wouldn't let me graduate until this year. It's a Inuzuka thing. We're really not about the whole child soldier thing. There's history there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm. What're your abilities?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm best with my taijutsu. I'm strong. I've learnt how to add chakra to my movements and that gives me a great edge. I'm thinking about attempting to grow claws, I'm not really interested in other weapons. I know a bit of fūinjutsu, but thats more of a hobby at this point. I'm hoping our jounin-sensei will give me a leg up there. I'm really fast, and with Inazuma I'm a very good tracker. But that's par the course with my clan."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm. I scored relatively high in analysis, critical thinking, ninjutsu theory, and weapons. I can use fire release; my current most usable technique is a C-rank, the Great Fireball. I was best in our year for taijutsu, but behind benchmarks for 'taijutsu prodigy.'"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm good at not going down when hit!" Naruto says, bouncing again. "Though not so good at not getting hit. I punch hard, and Rai's been working on my taijutsu with me but remembering all the forms is kinda really hard, but fighting itself isn't so much. I'm good at shapes! Like, looking at something, seeing what it is, what it could be. I like traps! They're fun. And easy to spot the way most people do 'em. Iruka-sensei said my chakra control's bad but my capacity's good, I think I might do better when we learn stuff that's not all weird and, like, trying to do tiny stuff?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't wait until we work together long enough and our taijutsu improves by leaps and bounds. That will be a fun fight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fighting you two properly would be fun!" he says, nodding and grinning.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke makes a vaguely considering noise.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll even have Inazuma sit out to give you both a chance."

Permalink Mark Unread

Said puppy huffs in response.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just you wait, me and Sasuke'll kick both your asses! Right, Sasuke - "

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke 'hmph's but his lips might be considering grinning.

Permalink Mark Unread

-- Inazuma takes that as a challenge and pounces at Naruto.

Permalink Mark Unread

Naruto flails, shouts, "I said wait!" and in general goes down.

Permalink Mark Unread

In the resulting chaos Sasuke somehow gets himself dragged into being beaten up by a puppy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume does nothing to help them and instead starts giggling and encouraging her smol fluffy monster.

Permalink Mark Unread

-- there's movement by the window and a tall, masked, white-haired shinobi appears.

He stares at them, silent.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke is currently trapped under Inazuma's butt.

Permalink Mark Unread

Naruto's flailing under a paw.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume smiles at him, completely innocent. That was a shorter wait then she expected.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, first impressions... less than stellar."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke groans and decides to preserve what little is left of his dignity by not wiggling.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you our sensei? Hi! Inazuma, let me uuuuuppppp."

Permalink Mark Unread

Inazuma huffs and continues to sit.

I win.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sensei, put-upon babysitter. Same difference."

Permalink Mark Unread

-- rude.

"Inazuma, off. Let them up. You win, you can let them go now."

Permalink Mark Unread

The boys will wriggle out and stand up with varying amounts of fake dignity.

"Hey! I'm Uzumaki Naruto! What's your name?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Introductions can wait. Meet up on the roof in thirty seconds.... starting now."

Permalink Mark Unread

!!!!

Inazuma doesn't even wait and runs out of the room in a blur.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume follows a half-second later.

Figures.

Permalink Mark Unread

Naruto and Sasuke, being used to racing Rai and a genius respectively, aren't far behind at all.

Everyone reaches the roof in time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Their probably-sensei waits cross-legged and reading a book. It looks like he's been there a while.

Permalink Mark Unread

Inazuma hesitantly sniffs him, checking to see if this one is real.

Permalink Mark Unread

Real enough.

(He restrains the urge to pet them and continues reading.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume takes a seat before him.

"You are Hatake Kakashi, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Naruto beats Sasuke to the roof and sits next to Rai.

"So sensei, what're we doing first, are we training? Or going on a super cool mission?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke arrives, huffs, but still looks interested in the answer as he walks around the other two to sit on Rai's other side.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Introductions first, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We already did that. It's your turn now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah! We know each other but not you! So who're you, huh huh huh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He stares a Naruto for a moment and sighs.

"My name is Hatake Kakashi. I am your jounin-sensei."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We already know that, what else?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What sortsa things do you like? How long have you been a jounin-sensei? Do you like ramen? What's the coolest technique you know?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like a lot of things. I've been a jounin since I was promoted from chūnin. Ramen is okay. Techniques? There are a lot..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So you know bunches! You must be a really good teacher, then!"

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs and moves on.

"Now, from the right; why do you want to be a ninja?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke has a faint expression like this is the first time anyone ever asked him that.

"I need to be strong," he says.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume waits a few moments to make sure he's not going to elaborate, then; "There's so much death and violence in this world. I want the people I love to be safe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I want to be strong, and make everyone around me strong, so my precious people can be protected and I can protect everyone who can't protect themselves! And so I can help them with their dreams!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume smiles at him and leans against him affectionately.

He's so good.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm. I suppose you're ready for the final test then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's another test?!?!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's always another test. You didn't think it was going to be that easy, did you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Awwww... What's it like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a surprise. One that will count towards whether you become a shinobi... or be sent back to the academy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We graduated. That has to count for something," she plays along.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke crosses his arms and leans back.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can't you just give us a hint? Pleeeeaaassseee Kaka-sensei!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well... I could. But you're going to freak out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tell us tell us tell us!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, okay. If you insist." He pauses for a long moment. "You'll be fighting each other. Only one will go on to become a shinobi."

Permalink Mark Unread

...what.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...What if we all beat you up, can we send you back to the Academy? And make Rai the sensei. I think she's a better sensei than you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kakashi shrugs and stands.

"We'll be meeting at the training grounds at 0600. Failure to appear will exempt you from ever becoming a shinobi. Don't be late."

-- and he disappears in a puff of smoke, leaving behind three pieces of paper.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's ambush him and beat him up. I'm not fighting my friends."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...We're not friends." Though he's also not capable of beating Raizume's puppy on his own.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Friends. Who're gonna beat up a jounin."

Permalink Mark Unread

I could eat him

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's either playing a very weird mind-game, or he really doesn't want us to pass. Or both. There's no way I'm fighting you. Either of you."

This is so frustrating. Her memories keep getting more and more inaccurate.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're not eating him, Zuma. Can't send him back to the Academy gnawed on. But yeah. Let's plan! You knew his name, Rai, do you know more? We need to information gather, see who knows what about him..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's Hatake Kakashi, the 'Copy Ninja'. He's really infamous. Graduated the Academy when he was five years old. Dubbed a prodigy and the best of his generation."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well his generation's gonna get a schooling from ours! Bet your mom has info on him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hana too, actually. We could go talk to them, if you're both free?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke nods.

(Apparently they're doing this. Whatever. Probably more likely to work, anyways.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yup. Let's get going. No time to waste!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She scoops up the three papers Kakashi left and shoves them into her pack.

"Hana's still at work, but mama is probably at the training grounds beating up genin."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's go get beating-up-jounin advice from her then!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She'll be so pleased."

She takes a running jump off the building, heading in the direction of the training grounds.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her team follows!

Permalink Mark Unread

Her mom is indeed beating up genin, trying to knock a hodge-podge team consisting of one of her originals and two of last year's into something vaguely resembling a fighting force.

She half-turns when Raizume and her team arrive, pulling one genin into a headlock. "Need something, pup?" she asks, cheerily.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Our jounin-sensei is a jerk! We were hoping we could ask you to give us some insider info."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which one?" She dodges to the side of a genin trying to free his teammate, twitches her foot, and the earth jerks under him. To his credit he doesn't trip this time.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hatake Kakashi. Weird guy with white-hair and a mask."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yup, know him. Likes dogs. Definitely a bit of an ass, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He told us we have to fight each other and only one of us can pass and the other two go back to the Academy, so we're gonna beat him up instead then ask the Hokage to send him to the Academy and make Rai our sensei."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wow, he is an asshole," one of the genin - the girl, and the one neither headlocked nor tripped - says.

"Focus!" Tsume shouts, and the girl has to jump away from some moving dirt.

"He can't do that, right, failed teams just get chuunin teachers," the headlocked boy says, wriggling around so he can kick at Tsume at the same time both his teammates come for another rescue attempt.

Tsume lets that one slide because teamwork drill, says, "Technically the jounin can recommend a return to the academy. Almost never gets granted." She flips the girl genin over onto her back, spins to kick at the older boy. "You guys want to know how he fights, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, please. Have you fought with him before? Know any secret weaknesses?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"In a serious fight his chakra capacity ain't worth shit compared to what he likes to throw around. You guys are unlikely to get him going seriously. Your best bet is to impress him, or to take him by surprise. Or better yet both." Though the second will be hard, given that he's watching them do this. And probably watching them plan. "Figure his intel's better than yours. But he's arrogant. Doesn't figure you three have anything approaching a chance, so he won't be putting in much effort at all."

Permalink Mark Unread

I bet he tastes good. Chewy.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Underestimating us is gonna be his undoing. We have an Uzumaki, Uchiha and a demi-god on our side. We're gonna put up one hell of a fight. Maybe maim him a bit?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "Good luck. He knows a lot of techniques - he's got some limited go-to's, but he's known for having a thousand techniques at some level of usability. Be prepared for a lot of surprises. For specifics... He's fast at taijutsu, too, but usually doesn't use weapons beyond kunai much. Good at tracking, has a team of dog summons specialized in that. Hana treats them, so might know more specifics - I haven't teamed up with him more than once."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The tracking thing might make the traps harder to hide..." He scrunches up his face. "Intel... He might be spying on us, guys. Rai, we should go to that place."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What place, idiot?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A secret place!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's not an answer," he says, rolling his eyes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think we should show and not tell. We never know who is listening."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If he's listening he'll follow us. But whatever. Are we talking to Hana?" On one hand, intel. On the other, humans.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Doesn't matter. He can't get in, and I very much doubt he'll be able to hear us." She pauses and looks to her mom. "Is Hana working late?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Usually is," she says, using one genin as a thrown projectile against another. "New puppies are getting enough of their legs under them to be idiots, so she's busy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Inazuma, could you please go and ask her to meet with us afterwards?"

Permalink Mark Unread

They think about it.

Hana will have Zuma-food?

Permalink Mark Unread

"She always does, cub," Tsume says, grabbing one genin's ankle and whipping him around. "Good luck, you three."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks Miss Rai's mom! Come on guys, the super secret meeting place is this way!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She hugs her mum.

"If all goes well, could Naruto and Sasuke came over for dinner tomorrow? I want to introduce them to everyone."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course!" Quick hug after kicking away another genin; they take the moment to regroup.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I love you! I'll be home late!"

Then she's off, running in the direction of the shrine. She tries to not make it a race, but who she is as a person.

Permalink Mark Unread

"See you then!" Tsume calls after, then turns to scolding her genin for not taking the hug as an opening.

Permalink Mark Unread

Naruto and Sasuke follow along, naturally slower than her.

"So this's it!" Naruto tells Sasuke when they reach the shrine. "You gotta hold my hand to get past the barrier."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke makes a face, but does. "What is this place?" he asks as they step in.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's an old shrine, we're been maintaining and improving it. It has a lot of seals and protections. Pretty sure also spirits. They really like Naruto, so it's safe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We should leave offerings if we're using their shrine for planning, to apologize."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Definitely. I'll find something and make it up for them while we plan."

She looks around a spots some good pieces of wood. Maybe she could carve something...

Permalink Mark Unread

He takes a small coin out of his pocket, leaves it in the offering hall (which Naruto had mostly gotten repaired).

Permalink Mark Unread

She scoops up the piece of wood and starts carving with a small knife she takes out of her pack.

"So I definitely know Kakashi is full of it. I heard that he's failed every single one of his previous genin candidates."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So there's a decent chance we'll have a chuunin teacher, no matter what we do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll just have to prove we're the best, with or without him!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think what mama said was right. We have to impress him. We're already pretty impressive for genin, so we have to go above and beyond. Prove that we can be a great team." She pauses. "He likely knows most of our strengths and weaknesses and will exploit them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uhhhh, so we need to cover for that somehow? I don't think I can get good at figuring out tricks in the next few hours, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Everything you fall for is blindingly obvious, idiot." He pauses, then, grudgingly, "I'll tell you if there's a trick. Or throw a rock at you if you're being stupid."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I'm very obviously too used to being in charge. I'm bossy. But I'm totally willing to take your lead, Sasuke. And that way you can demonstrate that you can work in a team, not be so lone-wolf all the time."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods. "You're the natural choice for leader. I hate people. He knows that, and will try to exploit it." He grimaces. "He might try to make me and Naruto fight, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

She pauses, has a sudden idea, and looks to Naruto.

"Do you think you could transform into me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yup!" He does - fairly thoroughly, too. He's picked up on the importance of scents from hanging out with the Inuzuka, and while his sense of smell isn't quite as good, he can do her scent close enough it'll take anyone who doesn't know her well a few critical moments to tell the difference.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That could be a good idea then. I don't think he knows us well enough at this point to immediately tell the difference. And I doubt he'll pull out his sharingan for this sort of thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"His what."

Permalink Mark Unread

"His sharingan. They call him Kakashi of the Sharingan. 'The Copy Ninja'."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How did he get it? Is he Uchiha?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. His dad was Hatake Sakumo, the White Fang. He did have a Uchiha teammate who was KIA. That's how he got it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He stole it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. Definitely not. As much of an arse Kakashi seems, he definitely wouldn't do that. I don't know the whole story, but I'm sure his teammate gave it to him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Deathbed gifts happen." He doesn't say anything else, but - his father hadn't liked them, but his mother had thought it was a good tradition.

He might remember an argument, even, about whether getting such a gift makes you a clan member.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think he uses it without good reason. He's not an Uchiha or an Uzumaki -- like mama said, he doesn't have a ton of chakra."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sooooo why were you asking if I could turn into you, Rai?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If we can trick him into thinking we are each other, he might try to turn me against Sasuke. Which wouldn't be a complete disaster," she teases.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe we can surprise him, too!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll have to convince Inazuma, but they should be easy to bribe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Inazuma likes me! And likes messing with people, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is true. They will take any chance to get praise and mess with authority figures." She hums. "We should change before we leave the shrine. Naruto, you can go back to my house and stay there tonight. Mama won't say anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright! That makes sense. Anything else we should plan? Traps are gonna be hard to set if he's watching us..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which of us is best at stealth?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm good. When I remember to. But I forget sometimes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I scored well, but I don't know how I measure up against you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Naruto, you probably have enough to focus on with the transformation. And I'm going to be you, so I might play that up a bit. Run him around the village." She looks to Sasuke. "I think you're our best bet, if you can make a clone and sneak out of the house. You're the least suspicious and the most likely to seemingly want to actually win."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's your plan, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sabotage and traps. We could make a minefield out of the training grounds. I can draw up a map and we can chose where everything goes so one of us doesn't set them off. Plus then Naruto gets input, since he's the best at traps."

Permalink Mark Unread

He frowns. "He'll know to check for that, and very well might arrive early... Unless we could disguise the purpose of the traps, or hide them so cleverly a jounin wouldn't spot them. It might be possible to fake him out, make it look like I'm betraying the two of you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That would definitely help. Make it seem like you're doing recon for yourself."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "I have paper and writing supplies with me, but I don't know the training ground's layout."

Permalink Mark Unread

She looks down at the wood carving and quickly finishes it off.

"Let me at it. I'll draw it up and Naruto can work his magic."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods, and hands over the supplies.

Permalink Mark Unread

It takes her a while, she remembers everything about the training ground -- her memory is beyond perfect -- but she takes the extra time to make it look good. If she's going to do something, she wants to do it Right. And also show off a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is your memory eidetic?" Sasuke asks after a bit, distracted from talking to Naruto about potential traps.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The very definition. And my memory goes back to when I was born," she makes a face at that.

And before, but now is probably not the best time to mention that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Naruto makes a face. "Ick!" Then he pauses, seeming sad suddenly. "Though it'd be neat remembering my parents."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke makes a curious noise.

Permalink Mark Unread

"They died. The day I was born."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke has no idea how to respond to that. Why did he try to find things out about his team, it was inevitably going to be awkward. How does talking to humans work.

Permalink Mark Unread

-- awkward silences, nnnot something she is Great at. She changes the topic.

"My clan is having a celebration in a few days. It's tradition, sort of a Welcome To The Family party for you both. We tend to get a bit... much. So I'll understand if you want to pass? We could arrange something smaller with just my mom and siblings. If at all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That'd be great!!!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Noncommittal grunt, then, reluctantly, "I don't need to be worked around."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You say that now, but you haven't been to a clan party before."

Permalink Mark Unread

He crosses his arms.

(He's not trying to be rude, but words are tiring and he's talked a lot in the past hour.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume smiles at him and lets him be. Plus, she really should finish off this map.

-- which doesn't take long. She passes it on to Naruto.

"Think you can go above and beyond with this?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He snickers. "Oh, just you wait. I'll even put drawings for Sasuke!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"When you're done I'll make a few copies, so we all can have one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's smart!" He works, tongue stuck out from between his teeth, for the next while, zoning out some as he hyper-focuses.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke leans back a bit and realizes he has no idea what to do while he waits. Or how to talk to Rai really.

Permalink Mark Unread

He doesn't need to talk! Raizume decides to take this opportunity to sharpen her kunai. She doesn't actually use them a whole lot, but it pays to keep them sharp.

Permalink Mark Unread

He'll attend to his tools a bit, too, but he did that this morning, so after a few minutes he'll get up to wander around the inside of the temple.

Permalink Mark Unread

Naruto does finish eventually, with a loud "Hah!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Awesome. Want me to show you have to copy them? It's a really easy technique. If you can even really call it that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure!"

Permalink Mark Unread

To be safe, she takes out another piece of inked paper -- this one with a more artistic interpretation of Klaus that she had sketched out a few days ago -- and a blank one.

She demonstrates the technique. She explains everything clearly and somewhat slowly. There's no rush and learning this will be really valuable.

Permalink Mark Unread

Naruto nods seriously, focuses very intently on the papers as he slowly and carefully does the technique...

Setting the target paper on fire.

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs and quickly put it out.

"Okay, this time with a little less chakra. A trickle, not the floodgates."

She makes a new copy of the picture and hands it to him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nothing happens. There might be a bit of smudging?

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmm. How are you managing your chakra?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm thinking what I wanna do and whether I need a bunch or a little?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a little more thoughtful than that, because it's so delicate. Try again, and this time add a little more chakra. And if that doesn't work, keep adding more. A little bit at a time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright."

It slowly smolders this time, then turns entirely black the next time, then turns into tiny paper flakes.

Naruto's getting frustrated.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Could be you just have entirely too much chakra. Like trying to fill a teacup with a Water Dragon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe? I was trying to make as small of changes as I could..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think you could manage it. But that will take time and a lot of patience. You're more of a powerhouse. If I need something big and impressive, I'd go to you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Heh. Thanks! You're, like, more sharp? Like a really stabby thing, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs.

"In another life maybe I'd be a very sharp dagger."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'd make a great dagger! You'd have, like, a wolf-head handle and teeth as the guard."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds awesome. I'd obviously be poison too."

Werewolves and hybrids were venomous, she kind of missed it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I bet I'd be a super cool knuckle-knife-thing like we saw in that book that one time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wonder if we could make them. It could be our new project. Though we mightn't have enough time..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Making weapons is hard, too, isn't it? Lotsa skills."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We are really talented. Especially when we work together."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah! We can maybe ask at a weapons shop how to do it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"And we could check the libraries, maybe ask mama if she knows anyone..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds fun!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What're you two talking about?" asks Sasuke, wandering back in.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're gonna design and craft our own weapons! Perfectly suited to our personalities. Do you know anything about the process? It'd be so much easier if one of us does. I'm thinking you'd do well with a sword or maybe a bow."

Permalink Mark Unread

He goes a bit quiet. "I haven't used a bow in a while. But I know a little of how they're made. Not much, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We could learn together, if you're interested."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe. Might be easier to infuse the weapons with our own chakra, I remember something about that," he says. "Though our reach is going to change as we grow, so any weapons we make now might not work for us later."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's interesting. What are the benefits of chakra infused weapons? Do they infect your opponent's own chakra?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. They're easier to use elemental or modified attacks with, and harder for others to use. Some do interesting things if forged well enough - the swords of the Seven Swordsmen all have unique abilities, and some are said to be able to decide their wielder."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did they forge the swords themselves, or is there a forgemaster somewhere handing them out?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The swords are older than the village, I think. I heard they were forged by an original band of rogue samurai during the Warring States, who joined Kiri as a group."

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe they should take Kabuza's sword, Kubikiribōchō, with them after they encounter him. If everything goes the same, that is. They could study it and terrify everyone.

"They sound really cool. Maybe we should study that era, the samurai and their methods. Try and figure out how they did it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That could be useful, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

-- she didn't know he was capable of smiling. She's very pleased she was wrong.

"Do you know the copying technique? Naruto is too much of a boss to get it. I can teach you if you don't know it."

Permalink Mark Unread

He knows it, and can make his own copy of the updated map easily enough. (He mostly even doesn't snip at Naruto when the blond excitedly explains every single marking.)

Permalink Mark Unread

-- Sasuke is interrupted by a suddenly appearing lap-wolfdog.

Pet me.

Permalink Mark Unread

He flinches and falls back and doesn't try to stab Inazuma but it's really close.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zuma hops off his lap quickly and wags their tail sadly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Inazuma, please. A little warning for the new kid. Ask."

Permalink Mark Unread

He's clammed up, and moves a bit farther from the probably genjutsu using wolf-dog.

(He doesn't like being touched when he can't brace himself. He doesn't like surprises. He really doesn't like genjutsu.)

Permalink Mark Unread

They flop down where they are, very much away from Sasuke.

Can exclude you?

Permalink Mark Unread

Slow nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

They send a feeling of acknowledgment.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is Hana coming?"

She is grumpy at Inazuma.

Permalink Mark Unread

Puppies. She's at home.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's switch then go talk to her!" Naruto says, desperate for a subject change.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good idea."

She stands, quickly goes through the hand seals and --

Permalink Mark Unread

-- transforms.

Permalink Mark Unread

He transforms, too. (Naruto likes turning into girls. It feels nice being one sometimes. A lot of the other kids say it's weird, that they still feel like boys or girls when they're the other, but Naruto just feels like his present body.)

"This is weird," she says. "I don't think my face goes like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It feels weird being taller. But that's always gonna be a problem with me," he reaches forward and pats Naruto's very very smol head.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're the teensy one." Naruto, who is short for her age, strongly appreciates not being the shrimp on the team.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's my curse, I know. I am forever burdened. Have fun with that." He looks over to Sasuke. "How do we look?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't tell the difference," he says after a few moments scrutinizing them.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good. You, at least, have a bit more familiarly with the both of us. Hopefully that means it'll pass with Kakashi."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. He seems done talking.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can go home, if you'd prefer, start preparing for your trapping adventure. You can storm off and Naruto and I can bitch about you being an arse on the way home."

Permalink Mark Unread

He considers this, then nods.

(He'll probably be more sulking off, but he can work up enough of a snit if he thinks too much about Inazuma startling him, he thinks.)

Permalink Mark Unread

He leaves him be and turns to Naruto.

"You ready, Raizume? It's the role of a lifetime."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I might be," she says, smiling.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke nods to them and goes ahead and sulks off.

Permalink Mark Unread

He waits a few moments for Sasuke to leave and then sighs.

"Well, that was nearly a disaster."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Sasuke's... Twitchy sometimes. People don't sit next to him often for a reason."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can't really blame him. At all." He shakes his head. "Inazuma can be more mindful in the future, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

I promised already.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's okay," Naruto says. "You didn't mean to."

Permalink Mark Unread

They snuggle her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, I think that's enough time. We should head home now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right. Both of us to Hana?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"For a little while, yeah. Then I can go back to your apartment and start messing with Kakashi."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd love to be a fly on the wall there..."

She sobers up just before they come into view of the outside, remembering the ruse.

Permalink Mark Unread

As soon as they get outside he starts ranting about Sasuke. About his stupid hair, how he thinks he's so cool and how they are so much cooler than him and how they're gonna send him and Kakashi back to the Academy. Just you watch!

Permalink Mark Unread

She's reasonable and vaguely placating but also kind of annoyed and disappointed.

Especially after it turns out Hana doesn't have much new for them - only purposefully vague second hand accounts of stand out fights.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's disappointed, but makes a show of bouncing back quickly and then jumping around to cheerfully greet and then immediately say goodbye to all the Inuzukas that are around.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her brats are adorable.

She's a better actor than the genin, and treats "Naruto" just the same as always, and wishes him good luck on his test tomorrow before he leaves.

Permalink Mark Unread

He says goodbye and quickly runs back to his apartment -- though he takes a couple of detours to help a kitten down from a tree, and grab some ramen, eat the ramen, ramble and show off his headband to Teuchi and then get another order to take home.

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs with 'her' family, gets some advice from Tsume, wrestles with Kiba some, helps make dinner, packs for the next day the night before (weapons, 'nutritious' lunches for everyone because Rai is thoughtful like that, and survival gear), and goes to bed at a reasonable hour instead of staying up training.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke goes home, spends much of the night legitimately anxious and pacing and unable to sleep. He slips out to a training ground, does his best to drive himself to sleep, still only manages two hours - in a tree instead of a bed - then goes to the meeting place several hours before the others are supposed to arrive. He makes a show of standing there brooding for a few minutes, then begins laying traps (having already memorized Naruto's map before he left the shrine).

Permalink Mark Unread

'Naruto' spends the night jumping around his apartment training and then gets an Inspired Idea and heads out on the town to try and hunt down Kakashi's apartment. He interrogates many villagers. He then gets distracted with training some more, helps someone find their dog and then plays with that dog -- then he panics and runs home to try and get some sleep.

He wakes up at 5:50, hurriedly packs -- badly -- and runs as fast as he can to the training grounds.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Raizume' remembers everything she needs (...with a bit of silent nudging from Inazuma), mostly successfully stays on task, and gets there a bit early. Not ridiculously so, but a reasonable time to arrive and account for delays.

She smiles at Sasuke when she gets there, notes that he seems in a bad mood, and leaves him be.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meanwhile 'Naruto' arrives suddenly and with a lot of fanfare.

"Made it!!!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She mostly remembers what Inazuma had pointed out as Rai-like things to pack, so she'll check with 'Naruto' if he packed everything he might need.

Permalink Mark Unread

He packed a lot of kunai! And some ramen! Enough ramen to share with Raizume!

Permalink Mark Unread

Ramen is, unfortunately, not real food. Raizume packed something that will actually help them more. (She's memorized this lecture by now.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke, who is in a bad mood independently of trying to act (which is making his mood worse), snorts and grumbles 'idiot' to himself.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not snapping at him's surprisingly hard. 'Raizume' has to rein herself in, remind herself that this is all an act.

"I packed enough for you, too, Sasuke, if you'd like," she says, voice perhaps a bit too even.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not interested," he snaps - and really he's not, he's had enough girls harass him by pushing 'homemade' food on him. Though he realizes intellectually that's not what's happening, he knows that's Naruto, he's on edge already, and it feels like his skin's crawling with nerves.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright. Offer'll be open later, though." And she'll go back to chatting with 'Naruto' - no plans, they made it clear they're too paranoid for that, so mostly light, non-consequential stuff. It's hard, though, and she's nervous and wants to start shouting and acting like herself again and infiltration when it's not just a game is surprisingly difficult.

(She wants Kakashi to show up already so they can kick his ass.)

Permalink Mark Unread

'Naruto' ignores him and shouts to the air.

"Hey Kaka-sensei! We're ready to kick your arse now!!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's not here yet, idiot," Sasuke says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"He could be, you don't know."

Permalink Mark Unread

-- and the devil appears.

"Yo."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke glares.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Morning, Kakashi-sensei," she says, acting like she totally knew he was there the whole time.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Naruto' yelps and jumps away to behind 'Raizume'.

Permalink Mark Unread

-- then he laughs, scratching his head

"Good timing Kaka-sensei! I knew you were there."

Permalink Mark Unread

He steps forward and ruffles 'Naruto's' hair.

"You look different, Sasuke-kun. Did you cut your hair?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I'm Sasuke."

Permalink Mark Unread

'Naruto' swipes his hand away and laughs awkwardly.

"Yeah, I'm Naruto. Donchaknow?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think he might be a worse idiot than you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not an idiot. I'm way smarter than you. And cooler! Right, Raizume?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"As long as you both understand I'm better than you, I can't say I care. Anyways, you two. Isn't this a bit counterproductive? Friends don't argue over who's smarter, they prove it, and right now we need to work together."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not your friend."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...maaaa, cut it out -- this is serious. Today will be the turning point in your shinobi careers." He shifts and stands up straight. "Two of you will be returning to the Academy, maybe out of the program all together. You'll prove whether you deserve to be here, to represent Konoha and protect her. This is no joke."

Permalink Mark Unread

He crosses his arms. "What do we need to do?" he asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

He holds up a single silver bell, it jingles slightly with the movement.

"Take this from me in the next hour. The two that don't get the bell lose." He drops his hands lose by his side. "Use deadly force. You'll have no chance otherwise."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke nods, seriously.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Raizume' frowns.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can all touch the bell at the same time! Then you'll definitely have to pass us all."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kakashi starts reading his book again. "Fifty-nine minutes left. Better hurry."

Permalink Mark Unread

He vanishes into the woods to observe and regroup his thoughts and plan.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll grab 'Naruto' and drag him into the woods - a bit away from Sasuke.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Naruto' makes a show of wiggling a bit at this, expressing that 'we could totally take him on now we just have to jump him!' But eventually relents and hides with Raizume.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kakashi stays where he is, looking a bit bored and continuing to read his book.

Permalink Mark Unread

Inazuma appears a little away from Sasuke, and walks silently towards him. They keep up the illusion for everyone else though.

Distraction?

Permalink Mark Unread

'We need to lead him into a trap,' Sasuke tries thinking back. 'Usually I'd hang back, wait for the others to get him to reveal himself. But he might notice the switch if he fights those two, Naruto's not as good as Raizume.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Inazuma will get chewy human to reveal themself. They give Sasuke a wide wolfy grin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Serious nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

They push off excitedly and disappear from view.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke prepares his shuriken to take advantage of any gaps in Kakashi's defense.

Permalink Mark Unread

It doesn't take them long to get into position.

They bend down, ready to pounce --

Permalink Mark Unread

'Raizume,' meanwhile, is antsy and trying to hide it and sort of fake plot with 'Naruto.'

"We need to move fast," she whispers, "He'll likely wait for us to make the first move, but we can't count on that - or on Sasuke." She's hoping they actually can count on Sasuke to attack first, even though she knows it's not his style. She's not sure how long she can pretend to fight like Raizume, even with how awesome she is.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can totally do it ourselves." He bends down and peaks out towards Kakashi. "He has no chance."

He tries to quickly and secretly make two clones, identical to them both. Then layers on a genjutsu, shifting them from Kakashi's view. Hopefully.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Given that she can't make solid clones that's probably a giveaway if he can. And she wants to ask Raizume how to make clones like that, but - her ninjutsu scores were her worst. She's almost afraid to ask because what if she fails...)

"Jaws of the wolf, then?" she asks, referring to a loose plan they've used a lot in play fights - you and your buddy close in from not-quite opposite sides, like a wolf's mouth snapping shut. It's fun. Not super effective on anyone above genin, but it seems like the sort of thing they might reasonably think to do.

Permalink Mark Unread

He reaches out for Inazuma mentally, receives a confirmation, and grins at her.

"You have all the best ideas, Raizume," he jokes. "Let's get him!"

They've done this countless times, all they have to do is wait for an opening.

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke gets the heads-up passed along by Inazuma and does his best not to tense in preparation.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kakashi continues to not appear to notice anything happening and turns a page in his book.

Permalink Mark Unread

-- and they pounce, going for the white-haired human's throat.

Permalink Mark Unread

-- he steps back and out of the way of the wolf-puppy and certain death.

Permalink Mark Unread

That might be as best as he's going to get.

He attacks, shuriken flying from multiple angles right as Kakashi steps back - the noise hopefully masked by Inazuma - and then immediately moves from his previous position.

Permalink Mark Unread

He blocks the shuriken with his own, easily, but doesn't move from his position.

Permalink Mark Unread

Argh.

He'll send a mental message to Inazuma to please attack again - they need Kakashi where the traps are - while seriously considering how many fireballs he can get off before exhausting himself. One should? Make Kakashi move?

Well, whatever, assuming Inazuma successfully herds Kakashi - at an angle to his target trap - he'll dart in and shoot off a fireball to herd him as much of the rest of the way as he can.

Permalink Mark Unread

Inazuma sends a quick mental confirmation, jumps up and growling at their target.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kakashi steps back -- apparently successfully herded.

Permalink Mark Unread

Close enough.

He swoops in, already flying through the hand signs, sending a fireball at an angle - so Inazuma's in front of him, Sasuke's to his left-front, and there's traps to the right and behind, and the fireball's immensely unlikely to hit the wolf-dog.

Permalink Mark Unread

He seems surprised -- as much as can be seen with the mask covering his expression. He jumps back again, further towards the river and away from the blast zone.

Permalink Mark Unread

He leaps through the dissipating wisps of flame, knives splayed, trying his best to push Kakashi back.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kakashi responds with his kunai and block all the attacks. He makes it look easy, but there is some progress and he moves further to the river.

Permalink Mark Unread

He starts getting frustrated, attacking with more force.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, he is significantly outmatched.

"You're dropping your shoulder, Naruto-kun."

Permalink Mark Unread

He narrows his eyes, but doesn't say anything as he keeps attacking.

Permalink Mark Unread

After a few more moments Kakashi shrugs and starts pushing forward, moving faster and faster, no longer on the defensive.

"It's a nice day for a swim, isn't it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke digs his heels in and closes, trying to keep Kakashi at least moderately close to the nearest traps.

...Retreating past one might be better, and he'll do that if this fails.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So tell me how the water is, eh, Naruto-kun?"

All of a sudden, he's behind the boy, grabbing the collar of his shirt and the top of his pants to lift and throw him into the river.

Permalink Mark Unread

He does not flail, but does re-angle himself to fall better into the river, resurfacing quickly and starting to swim - and he's going to have to learn water walking at some point, this is embarrassing -

Permalink Mark Unread

'Naruto' does not groan -- he needs to trust that Sasuke has got this and will get to land himself -- signals 'Raizume' and immediately starts running at Kakashi.

They've done this a million times before, usually with his mum or other family members, but still --

Permalink Mark Unread

She falls into the rhythm of it easily, wind in her hair, and this is fun, like ganging up on the older Inuzuka -

She times her attack to land alongside her teammate's, remembering to use Raizume's style instead of Naruto's at the last second.

Permalink Mark Unread

He is forced to take out the hand that was reaching for his book to parry 'Raizume' as he dodges 'Naruto'.

Permalink Mark Unread

Being Naruto comes nearly second nature to him, he knows exactly what he would do now. He pushes forward, unrelentingly, and tries to make Kakashi focus on him so 'Raizume' can attack his back.

"You're not gonna get us so easily! Watch this!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She picks up on 'Naruto's' goal, leaping at Kakashi's back as hard and fast as she can.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Sasuke gets to shore - his aim isn't good enough for ranged without risking hitting the others, and he doesn't know their rhythm well, so he'll have to hang back for an opening.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Kakashi almost seems like he's actually trying, as he ducks to avoid the attack on his back and pushes out to leg sweep the one in front of him.

To a sharp-eyed observer, he appears somewhat overextended.

Permalink Mark Unread

He slides into an opening the fake 'Raizume' leaves - either on accident or on purpose, he can't tell with Naruto - and does his best to stab Kakashi.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Naruto' shifts slightly to accommodate Sasuke and also bends down so --

Permalink Mark Unread

-- Inazuma can get up to Kakashi's throat.

Permalink Mark Unread

The best murder attempts are group murder attempts!

(She might be overchanneling Raizume.)

Rawr, take this Kakashi's legs!

Permalink Mark Unread

Kakashi is very mauled.

-And then he disappears in a puff of smoke and branch clatters to the ground in the space previously occupied by his body.

Permalink Mark Unread

Awwwwwww.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Inazuma, where'd he go?'

Permalink Mark Unread

They land easily and push out their senses, searching.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's standing in a tree, reading his book. He's not even trying to hide.

Permalink Mark Unread

Inazuma growls and calls attention to Kakashi.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Naruto' groans at him.

"No fair! We totally had you!"

Permalink Mark Unread

He pulls the bell out of his pocket and gives it a little shake, not looking up from his book.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hmmmm Raizume's usually bossy but they'd agreed to let Sasuke lead but she really doesn't actually like him that much even if they're now friends. Also he doesn't seem to be saying anything.

"Naruto, focus," she says, "Let's get him."

Even though that technique's such cheating.

Permalink Mark Unread

He'll finally use this opening to launch some shuriken - hopefully pushing Kakashi closer to the traps.

Permalink Mark Unread

He takes a single step in that direction, leaning the rest of the distance necessary to dodge.

Permalink Mark Unread

The trap is right there.

He quickly follows Sasuke's lead and jumps up into the tree. He follows after Kakashi, seemingly acting reckless and trying to get to the bell, but actually trying to push him further towards the trap.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll jump in.

(She's less subtle about the pushing him part. She knows that trap, though, knows how to trigger it - )

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke will try to cut off the obvious routes of retreat.

Permalink Mark Unread

Seems like he doesn't have much choice but to get caught in the trap. Oh no.

"Oh no, you caught me," he says, dangling upside down by one foot.

Permalink Mark Unread

He seems so surprised. 'Naruto' tries to hide his amusement.

"Are you gonna give up? Or do we have give some more teamwork examples?'

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, there is still only one bell," he says casually, giving it another demonstrative jingle. "That means two of you are going to fail, even now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll take out a time share on it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Part-time shinobi. I could work on my cooking skills."

Permalink Mark Unread

He's just glaring at Kakashi.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's well and good for Sasuke and Raizume, but I think poor Naruto is feeling a little left out."

Permalink Mark Unread

Annoyed sound.

...Kakashi's not going to stop being Like That, is he.

"I'd rather have Raizume as a sensei," he says after a few moments, voice surly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Enjoy your time in the Academy for the next ten years!" he says brightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're not going anywhere. Plus, Raizume would be way better. She's not old and senile like you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I am only a genin. Not proper for me to teach other genin. Which is why Inazuma should be jounin-sensei."

Permalink Mark Unread

Arrrrrghhhhhh he hates this feeling, like there's a noise caught in his throat and his head's eating itself and he doesn't want to talk.

He snatches the bell from Kakashi and throws it to Inazuma.

Permalink Mark Unread

Inazuma catches it and jumps down from the tree and away.

Permalink Mark Unread

His expression turns serious. "You three, meet me back at the monument stone."

And he disappears. Again.

Permalink Mark Unread

He'll go, albeit somewhat grouchily.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll shrug and look at 'Naruto.'

"Uh, should we drop the thing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs. "Might as well, I'm pretty sure he figured it out straight away."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Darn it. Good idea, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can work on it more. Spend more time observing each other and maybe Sasuke too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah! Getting him to pretend to be us might be hard, though, he doesn't talk enough."

And towards the memorial stone?

Permalink Mark Unread

Onwards!

"Maybe he and Inazuma can swap."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think he'd love that, no one'd expect him to talk at all. And no one would be surprised if 'Sasuke' just talks in growls," he says, right as they arrive.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kakashi is staring at the names written on the stone when they arrive, hands in pockets. He doesn't look up.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey Sasuke, hey Kaka-sensei!" Naruto shouts, waving.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume quickly takes Naruto's hand to signal quiet.

Permalink Mark Unread

He'll settle down, shooting her a concerned glance.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Written on this stone are the names of Konoha's greatest heroes. Starting today, you will have the opportunity to join them."

Permalink Mark Unread

Then he turns and smiles.

"Congratulations! All three of you pass!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume has ever told him what the memorial stone is, so he doesn't comment on the 'greatest heroes' bit.

He does shout "Yes!" and punch the air, though, then hug Raizume and nod excitedly to Sasuke.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke nods back, less excitedly.

Permalink Mark Unread

She hugs him back, then walks over to the stone.

"Hopefully we live a long and worthy life before that happens. Thank you, Kakashi. I hope we did you proud. Honored their sacrifice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Now, now, cute little genin don't need to be worrying about things like that. Take the rest of the day and celebrate. Meet at the bridge first thing tomorrow for your first mission."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mission! What're we doing, is it something cool?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'll find out tomorrow! Don't be late!" Aaand he's gone.

Permalink Mark Unread

And here she thought they were having a moment.

She looks over to the boys and smiles.

"You two were awesome."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke nods, a quiet 'you too.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks! We're Team Awesome!" A beat, and, "Uh, did he say which bridge?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope. Which is his problem, really. Maybe we can pick a really hard to find one and make him work for it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like the way you think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You always do," she smiles and then looks to Sasuke. "Are you hungry? I don't even have to ask Naruto. The answer is always the same."

Permalink Mark Unread

Slow nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mama is really looking forward to meeting you, plus I think you'll really like my sister." She looks around for Inazuma, but finds nothing. "We better hurry if we don't want Inazuma to have eaten all the food."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nooooo," Naruto says, "Come on let's go!" And he'll take off, leading the way to the Inuzuka compound.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke follows.

Permalink Mark Unread

It doesn't take them long, being themselves, and they find Inazuma waiting for them at the gates. They still have the bell on them.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey Inazuma!" Naruto shouts, waving.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsume chooses that moment to emerge. "Hey guys, how'd you do?" she asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We passed!" She says as she jumps up to tacklehug her mom. "He totally just wanted us to demonstrate our team working abilities. Old hat."

Permalink Mark Unread

She spins her little lightning around. "That's great! Kiba got in with his team not too long ago, too. I'm so proud of you all!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh! I wanna meet them. But, Mama, you know Naruto. Obviously. This is Uchiha Sasuke. He's a really good teammate and was second place on this years graduation test. Sasuke, this is my mom Inuzuka Tsume. She beats up genin for a living," she teases.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Gotta get the brats into shape somehow. Why don't you all come inside, get comfortable. I can get you guys something to eat and drink, or feel free to raid the fridge and pantry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks Miss Raizume's mom!" Naruto shouts as he heads inside to acquire snacks and gossip.

Permalink Mark Unread

She looks to Sasuke.

"Want me to give you the tour?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs then nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes him around her house first, pointing out the kitchen and the bathrooms and her bedroom. Well, she shows off her bedroom. Her walls are covered in what looks to be seperate complex murals, all depicting what seems to be fantastic and abstract scenes of another world. The ceiling is a stunning galaxy with hundreds, maybe thousands, of individual stars. Despite the stark differences in each wall, they all blend together to make up something whole.

"It took me nearly two years to finish all this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You paint?" he asks after a few moments.

Permalink Mark Unread

"If I wasn't a shinobi I probably would have become a professional artist. Getting commissions and that sort of stuff."

Permalink Mark Unread

He seems a bit taken aback by 'not a shinobi', but does nod.

...He has no idea what he'd be if he wasn't a shinobi.

Dead, maybe. Itachi didn't leave the artists alive.

Permalink Mark Unread

She leaves him to his silence and continues showing him around. Pointing out different family members, introducing him quickly and then moving on.

Eventually: "Hana should be home by now..." She looks around for her sister.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her sister can be found, down in the main room where the meal seems to be happening. She's talking gently to Hinata, apparently asking her something about dogs, and she looks up when Raizume enters.

It's easy to spot that Sasuke's a bit overwhelmed.

"Hey you," she says, waving. "Rai, mind if I borrow some of our guests? Figured they could grab food and then I could show them the clinic. Some of the puppies are nervous, thought they might appreciate an introduction to new people who aren't so boisterous."

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a possibly unacceptable number of people in the main room. Two of them are Naruto and Kiba.

Sasuke nods at Hana.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hana is the best sister. Though she keeps that to herself.

"If the guests want to be borrowed, borrow away."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke and Hinata will be borrowed, after Hana thanks Raizume and then insists on getting them snacks.

She takes them to the clinic, where it's quiet and there's no other people, and sets them in a room with some very very nervous puppies, giving them soft instructions on how to hold their bodies, where to set their gaze, how to talk or not -

(Sasuke doesn't mind Hinata, he doesn't think. She talks even less than him. And Hana seems nice enough.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Inazuma deigns to appear after a while and quietly sits and watches him with the puppies.

Permalink Mark Unread

He'll jump a bit if Inazuma doesn't telegraph their arrival but not too bad.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nope! They don't bother trying to hide from him. They promised.

Permalink Mark Unread

Watching wolf-dog is acceptable, then.

(He's a bit too hesitant in patting the one puppy that gets over her nervousness - he's used to cats, who prefer a lighter touch - and gets nipped. He pulls his hand away and looks away and stops offering pats until she licks him in apology, then keeps patting.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Raizume spends most of her time going over the days events with various friends and family and eating a lot of food. She checks up on Inazuma intermittently, but mostly leaves them to themselves.

Permalink Mark Unread

Naruto talks to Kiba - gets into a series of competitions with Kiba - tries very determinedly to make friends with Shino - tells Tsume all about how awesome their team was -

And, in general, has a great time.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's quiet by the time the party ends - and not being required to be always present is weird, but a good kind of weird - but it's not an agitated quiet, not like before.

He even pets Inazuma a bit before he leaves.
