sooth the pains of missing home
Tadashi and Baymax in Shift
Permalink Mark Unread

There is some sort of commotion happening near the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology, close enough that some students can hear. Far enough that most people won't try to reach the scene.

But whatever it is, it is loud... are those gunshots?

More importantly, what is that metal ring with complicated machinery attached?

Permalink Mark Unread

Tadashi heads out of the lab to investigate the noise, sees the panic, and immediately runs back inside, dodging his labmates.

"Baymax! I need you!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Baymax inflates, and carefully steps out of his charge station. "Tadashi. Are you in need of medical attention?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not me, bud, but plenty of other people. We gotta go, now!" Tadashi grabs his robot by his hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

Baymax toddles as quick as he can behind his maker.

Permalink Mark Unread

When they arrive there they will find what appears to be a stand-off between the police and a masked man controlling three industrial robots. Two trucks are turned on the side, blocking the street. The robots are trying to hall off their cargo, a pair of ring-shaped machinery that's currently sparking like crazy.

A lot of people are hiding under cover, many are obviously hurt.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Baymax! There!" Tadashi directs his robot to one group of injured people.

He himself runs closer to a different group, ignoring police officers calling out to him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your pain?" Baymax asks the first injured person.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tadashi reaches the first group of hiding people. "Come with me! I can help!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What?!" The victim blinks at them "A bullet clipped my wrist!"

The victims lift an arm. It's not a serious injury, but it's bleeding a lot.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Come with me, I can help!"

He directs them towards Baymax, through a safe route avoiding the fight itself.

Permalink Mark Unread

Most victims will just obey his commands, happy to have someone guiding them through the stressful situation. Most injuries are not that bad. But this still is a confrontation between people with guns and robots.

At least most people can move.

Most is not all.

For example, one of truck's driver is over there clearly unconscious and under the weight of his vehicle.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Baymax! I need you!" Tadashi dodges fleeing people to get to the truck.

Permalink Mark Unread

Baymax follows Tadashi, and upon happening on the trapped man, scans him. "Multiple fractures. Abrasions. And a truck is lying on him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, no kidding! Help me lift it!" Tadashi is struggling to pull the man out without injuring him further.

Permalink Mark Unread

Baymax lifts the truck.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nice one, bud!" Tadashi pulls the unconcious man out, and lays him carefully. "All right, get to work, Baymax."

Permalink Mark Unread

Baymax gets to work as commanded.

Permalink Mark Unread

One of the giant robots reaches for the two of them. But the ring thing is disturbed and the robot needs to catch it before it hits the ground. Baymax can do his work and stabilize the man, but now they are between a rock in a hard place with the robots blocking their path.

They can't see what causes it, but Tadashi should be able to catch the moment when an electric cable breaks from a pole and makes contact with the robot.

The machine starts whirring and glowing brightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tadashi looks up in shock, his mind whirring with possibilties when the machine starts glowing.

"What the- Baymax! We need to get out of here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"This patient is not stable enough to move. Please wait."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bud, we gotta go now!"

Tadashi starts looking for a way around the robots, but can't find one. The safest path seems to be towards the glowing thing.

Permalink Mark Unread

There really isn't any option, specially if he doesn't want to be under a rain of glass and scrap metal as a robot picks up a car.

Oh, it's a delivery truck. The robot is shoving it under the glowing thing to give it support. Tadashi gets to see the logo "Isekai delivery" before being pushed alongside Baymax into an impossible space...

Permalink Mark Unread

If Tadashi had found this place within a lab, he would be amazed.

Instead, he screams in terror.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Tadashi!” Baymax calls, reaching for him.

Permalink Mark Unread

They both spiral out of control through the weird space. They even manage to hold onto each other for a time... but whatever forces rule this place pull them out right before a bright light engulfs them.

When the light fades, Tadashi finds himself falling from the sky towards the tree covered ground...

...until a woman, with pale skin, slitted eyes and white-brown feathered wings catches him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tadashi's scream stops short when he stops falling, and he takes three big gulping breaths.

And then he sees what stopped his fall, and his mouth drops open for a different reason.

"...what?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Winged person says something that he doesn't understand and can't really guess if it is a question a statement. His rescuer appears to be mildly irritated.

She swoops and turns them around towards... a floating island with a town on top.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay...thank you?!" Tadashi tries. He grips tight to them until they begin to descend.

Permalink Mark Unread

Winged person apparently understands the general sentiment and shrugs.

As they approach it soon becomes clear the existence of more unusual kinds of people. Besides winged-people there are people with purple, blue or red skin walking around. And a couple of literally-black skinned people here and there. Winged person holds tightly by the shoulder and looks around until they spot someone in a uniform and catches their attention.

Uniformed person is a man, with indigo skin who exchanges a few words with winged-person. The uniformed man turns towards Tadashi and says something that sounds like a question.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Ah...hi?” Tadashi flaps his arms a bit and then shrugs.

An idea strikes him, and he looks out for some paper and something to draw with.

Permalink Mark Unread

The uniformed man has parchment and a quill in his travel bag. Once he deduces that Tadashi wants to write something he offers them to Tadashi.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tadashi takes them with a grateful smile, leans on the nearest flat surface, and starts sketching out a series of drawings describing how he got here. At least, what he guesses happened, and everything is simplified.

He shows it to his rescuer and the other being.

Permalink Mark Unread

His rescuer looks impatient by the point he finishes the drawing, but the uniformed person says a few words and the rescuer leaves with just a nod.

The uniformed person pulls Tadashi by the arm and waves his hand in a "follow me" sort of motion.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tadashi does, trying to not look as worried as he feels.

Permalink Mark Unread

Uniformed person leads the way towards a building with glowing letters at the door. Up from a balcony someone with red skin watches them. Uniformed person and red skinned person exchanges a few words.

The red person looks at Tadashi for a minute and then there is a not-quite-sound-but-not-quite-thought in Tadashi's head.

<Hello. This is entirely non-invasive telepathy. Are you lost?>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Telepathy!?" Tadashi's eyes light up and he grins.

He then realises saying it out loud is probably missing the point.

<Uh...hi?> he thinks.

Permalink Mark Unread

<Hi!> He sends back. <I am Felicianus. I was told that you didn't speak the local language and show up out of nowhere?>

Permalink Mark Unread

<Nice to meet you! Nice to meet anyone, really. I’m Tadashi. I’m not from around here, so to speak. I believe I fell through some kind of portal, though they’re not really my area of expertise.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<Oh, that must have been alarming. Do you recognize anything? At least the shapes?>

Permalink Mark Unread

<Alarming is one word for it. Yes, everyone is shaped like the are in my world, but the skin colour and wings are different. Very different.>

Permalink Mark Unread

Felicianus frowns. He exchanges a few words with the uniformed person. <That's not what I meant. I mean... what different shapes people can change to and from.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<Ah...none? The form we’re born with is kinda it.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<Oh, dear. Well, you really are far away from home... and you're gonna need a place to say. Do you want to stay here?>

Permalink Mark Unread

<I...if it’s no trouble? That would be really nice.>

He is a long way from home. He wonders what his brother and Aunt think happened.

Permalink Mark Unread

<I am so sorry. But there might be a way for magic to get you back.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<Wha- Oh, right. Telepathy. Thank you, I just hope that somehow they know I’m all right.>

He perks up somewhat at ‘magic’. <This world has magic? That’s amazing!> He can’t hide the thought that he would love to study it.

Permalink Mark Unread

<Do you need a hug? And, yes this world has magic. And if I can flatter myself, I am one of the most magical people around.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<If the most magical person around wouldn’t mind giving me s hug, it would be welcome.>

He also can’t lie to himself that Felicianus is quite attractive.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felicianus puts his arms around Tadashi.

He is warmer than a regular human should be, but that only adds to the hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

Warmer than usual should remind him of something, but once Felicianus’ arms come around him, it’s all he can do to cling back and not think of home.

Permalink Mark Unread

The uniformed person asks something and Felicianus answers. <Are you okay with staying here then? There is a temple that take people too.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He can speak to Felicianus, he can’t speak to anyone else. The thought of being away from him, even though he’s not been around him that long, sends a small note of panic through him.

<Uh...whatever is easiest for you, I suppose?>

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe Felicianus feels that tensed panic, because Tadashi gets calming pats on his back. <It won't be any trouble. I just wanted to give you options.> He gives Tadashi a reassuring smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

<Thank you, I really didn't like the idea of not being able to communicate.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<We would teach you the language either way.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<Can you do that telepathically?>

Permalink Mark Unread

<Not at an accelerated rate, but we can exchange words out loud and I can send you the meaning.>

Permalink Mark Unread

Tadashi whistles. <Magic. Wow. It is fascinating.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<It is, isn't it? Let me find a place for you to sleep and show you around?>

Permalink Mark Unread

<Thank you, I would like to gain some sort of bearing.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<Lets go do that then.>

They say goodbye to the guard who nods and leaves (Felicianus guides Tadashi through the words).

Then there is a short tour through the building, Felicianus explains it is a Mage Guild (place where people with magical powers offer their services) and that it belongs to his family. Currently he is the only mage around because his mother and brothers are elsewhere cutting a deal. But Felicianus will gladly introduce him to the small staff and show him his room. They have plenty of space because the building used to be an inn.

Permalink Mark Unread

<Mage Guild kinda sounds like a not-for-profit back home. People helping others because they can. It's very noble.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<I am sad to inform you that it's actually a paid service. Though, we do things for free too. Like helping people from faraway places getting settled.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<So more like a doctor's surgery, gotcha.>

He tries to hide a creeping blush. <Well, it doesn't get more faraway than me, that's true.>

Permalink Mark Unread

That's adorable.

<In that case I hope I am being good at acclimating you. Do you have any  questions? I am not sure where to start.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<Oh, I have so many. Let me organise them into subject first, before I unleash them on you.>

Tadashi is a scientist, of a sort, and such employs a scientific curiousity into everything.

Permalink Mark Unread

<Of course.>

Permalink Mark Unread

Tadashi thinks for a few moments, Felicianus can probably see the way he stacks everything in neat mental piles.

<Okay, first off, you mentioned 'shapes', like people can take different forms. Does that mean that essentially every person is just operating a kind of meat suit?>

Permalink Mark Unread

<I have never heard being put in that way. But it's not a wrong description.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<So your mind, your soul, if you will, is interchangeable?>

Permalink Mark Unread

<Not really? Someone's different shapes will be controlled by the same mind.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<So what happens to the mind when it isn't inhabiting a shape?>

Permalink Mark Unread

<Ah. Changing shapes is a gradual process that it takes a minute and your mind sticks through it while it happens.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<Then piloting more than one shape isn't possible?>

Permalink Mark Unread

<Not without special magic. Like a duplicating power.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<Ah, okay. So what if->

He rattles off a few more questions.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felicianus gladly answers them all. He takes the opportunity to also explain some basics of shapes. People are born with a few based on the shapes of their parents. Changing shapes is painful, but gets easier with practice. Every time one changes shapes they will "reset" to a default age based on when they acquired that shape, thus people can live indefinitely or until they lose all their shapes. Shapes can be sacrificed to another shape, thereby granting that the surviving shape a new magical power.

Some people are born "shift-dancers", they have some kind of special power - called a "dance" - that tends to affect all their shapes and makes them unique. Felicianus himself is an example.

Permalink Mark Unread

Speaking of brothers. Here is someone that looks like Felicianus, but with (currently) purple skin and white hair.

"Hey, Felicianus. The staff said we have a new guest?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Tadashi pauses mid thought when the new, blue person walks in. He looks between them and Felicianus grinning.

<Twin?>

Permalink Mark Unread

<Third twin, actually. There is Zephyrinus as well.> Felicianus talks to the new arrival and translates via telepathy. <Theocritus, this is Tadashi. He is from another world.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<You all have such interesting names!>

He waves at the newcomer.

Permalink Mark Unread

Newcomer waves back.

Permalink Mark Unread

<Thank you. Tadashi is a rather pretty name too.>

Permalink Mark Unread

You both are rather pretty as well, Tadashi tries very hard not to think. And probably fails.

<What's his shape? The same as yours?>

Permalink Mark Unread

<I have that shape, but I am not currently in it. That one is called Brontos, it is blue or purple skinned and can cause electrical shocks. The one I am in right now is called Aestes, it can breathe fire.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<Naturally occurring electricity. Out of a person. That is incredible! Back home you have to- Well, it's a very involved process.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<Now I am curious.>

Permalink Mark Unread

Theocritus says (and Felicianus translates) that he is curious too and will change into the Aestes' shape and be back in a minute.

Permalink Mark Unread

<I'll wait for him to get back before I launch into a lengthy description of harnessing nature's power to turn into electricity.>

There is definitely amusement in Tadashi's "voice".

Permalink Mark Unread

<Sounds interesting. Is that what you did back in your world?>

Permalink Mark Unread

<No, I just took advantage of it. I made...constructs, I guess you could call them? Robots. My particular creation was one that had knowledge of all forms of...healing.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<Ooooh. That sounds potentially very useful. There is never enough healing.>

Permalink Mark Unread

Theocritus returns, looking even more like Felicianus, but you can tell them apart by their clothes. Theocritus is shirtless.

Permalink Mark Unread

<He'd be very excited to learn how to heal different shapes! I thought he came through the portal with me, but I guess he must've managed to escape somehow.>

Aaaaand he's going to try very hard to not stare at said shirtlessness.

Permalink Mark Unread

<Who is he?> Theocritus asks telepathically. There is a touch of amusement there.

Permalink Mark Unread

<A construct. He made constructs in his worlds and made one with healer knowledge.>

Permalink Mark Unread

If he just stays focused on the ceiling, he can pretend that two very good looking men are both fully clothed.

Permalink Mark Unread

<Is there something wrong?>

Permalink Mark Unread

<No! No, no, nothings wrong. Everything's fine! Peachy keen.>

Overdoing it, Tadashi.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felicianus giggles helplessly. He speaks to Theocritus, but sends translations to Tadashi. <So, where is mom and Zephyrinus? They didn't came back with you?>

Permalink Mark Unread

<I got a fast travel power that mom thought would make her sick, so they are coming back the long way.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<Fast travel power? That sounds incredible!>

And something previously only seen in video games.

Permalink Mark Unread

<It is. It lets me sort of ride a thunderbolt and reach places really fast. Really, really fast.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<I think I mentioned that I am a shift-dancer but didn't explain the details?>

Permalink Mark Unread

Both of those concepts enthrall Tadashi, and immediately about eighty additional questions spring to mind. First things first, though:

<No, I don't think you did, and I'd love to know more about it?>

Permalink Mark Unread

<Okay, just to show how weird it can get. Zephyrinus' shift-dance is essentially me. Or to be more accurate, it is to have a twin with a shared shift-dance that's beneficial to them both. In my case, I can share shape sacrificing.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<But it gets even better. Someone with less than ethical impulses and a shift-dance to switch around dances found us when we were little and was curious. It turns out that if you try to switch around Zephyrinus' dance you confuse the system and you can get a third twin. My dance lets one of us restore one of the others to life.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<That's...that's incredible! I wouldn't even...we don't have anything like that in my world.>

What he wouldn't give to have his computer, he could be writing down all this new information for later study.

Permalink Mark Unread

<You know, you probably can acquire forms yourself, but it is extremely painful.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<I...might actually be interested in trying that. For scientific research.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<It also heals things and if you have two forms you can switch between them without getting older.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<Aside from the pain, I'm not really seeing a downside.>

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile. <And a lot of upsides. It does take a while to get a spot in a pool.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<Waitlists, huh? Enemy of progress.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yeah, you can also use the pool to heal a current shape. Which, is no one's first choice, but tends to be very thorough. Add to how it takes days to finish the process... it adds up.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<I bet you don’t regret any of that for a second.>

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "No, we do not."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tadashi laughs, mostly because that giggle was adorable and if he thinks about it too much Felicianus will know that-

He probably already does. And he knows this. Ack.

<How many shapes do you have?>

Permalink Mark Unread

<Currently it's four. Most people have three.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<I take it I'm unusual for having one?>

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yeah, but we will solve that as soon as possible, don't worry.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<Really?>

Tadashi even dares to rest his hand on Felicianus's arm. For no other reason than closeness, of course.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felicianus returns the gesture.

Permalink Mark Unread

<...It might not be easy, though.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<I trust you.>

Permalink Mark Unread

<I will try my best.> Felicianus squeezes Tadashi's hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

<That's cute and all. But maybe, you two should consider the more immediate practical steps before swearing undying devotion or whatever was coming next.>

Permalink Mark Unread

Tadashi gave Felicianus his best lovesick look, before squeezing and dropping his hand.

<Practicality is the enemy of romance, Theocritus>

Permalink Mark Unread

Theocritus just smiles innocently.

Permalink Mark Unread

At this point the final triplet shows up, currently wearing his blue skinned form, he walks in and says something.

Permalink Mark Unread

<Tadashi, this is Zephyrinus.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He knew they were triplets. He knew that the third one would look just like the other two.

It's really only now that it dawns on him how completely unfair this is.

<Hey! I'm Tadashi. Not from around here. Which you might've guessed already.>

Permalink Mark Unread

Felicianus translates this. They exchange more words. <He says it's nitce to meet you and wants to talk to you. He also suggested going to the bath-house next door.>
