Hashirama and Sasuke in space
Permalink Mark Unread

It'll take a few days for Spray's sister to be contacted and return. The village remains friendly over that time, and slowly experiments can be worked out to expand the two visitors' diets.

Language is less of an easy go, but the jellyfish people all seem to have Spark's telepathic capabilities, so they're able to get by for now.

Hashirama spends the time mostly befriending Sasuke - they end up sparring a bit, then more, and it's fun. Hashirama likes sparring in general, but... Sparring with Sasuke reminds him of sparring with Madara, just... More.

He also plays the role of 'gregarious one' and does his best to be diplomatic and tell interesting stories and learn about the world. Apparently 'child soldiers' is the exact opposite of normal here - this is a nursery planet, and while it's not always safe from wildlife, it's firmly off limits from the wars that sometimes rage across the cosmos.

In fact, some detailed discussion with one of the nursery minders about comparative biology gets a reply that the locals wouldn't consider Hashirama's species capable of fighting until twenty one! That's older than Hashirama!

(He practically vibrates at Sasuke about the political implications. If an entire galaxy can mostly stick to such a high combat age, can maintain treaties putting civilians off limits, it says a tremendous amount for their people's potential who have a lot less to overcome - )

Sasuke nods along to Hashirama's excited spiels, and begins to get - not quite excited, but anticipatory himself. He doesn't think he has the skills to do anything about the world, but... Hashirama's making him feel like someone should be responsible. And maybe that someone should be him...

Which is a terrifying thought. Sasuke shouldn't be responsible for house plants, let alone planets.

Permalink Mark Unread

When Sasuke expresses that, Hashirama just laughs, and says, "Luckily I'm pretty good with plants! And hopefully planets, too... But think about all the knowledge we can bring over - "

And he's off again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke sends him a somewhat fond look, and settles in to listen.

Permalink Mark Unread

Spray's sister, when she comes, is enormous - twice the size of the shark that attacked them on the way to the village. Her hair's darker than Spray's, a blue that shimmers almost black, and her scales are dark with swirls of speckled color like stars across them. Her eyes are large for her face, irises pale blue and luminous like a cat's. She has a smile that stretches a bit too far into her cheeks, and fingers that trail like seaweed, and a sing-song laughter like the distant wailing music they heard their first few days.

Through Spark, she mentions she's seen people like Sasuke and Hashirama - humans, who live in metal cans and never grow very big at all, who're curious and apparently from the outer edge of the galaxy, trying to explore for the sheer sake of it. Not very big players, in the grand scheme of things, but their ships might be friendlier to the two boys, and the mermaid is fairly sure the ship she met hasn't gone too far to catch up with.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hashirama thanks her quite profusely, and then spends a bit trying to figure out how to get him and Sasuke to the human ship - maybe the mermaid can carry them?

Permalink Mark Unread

She's unsure how human will do in space, she's never seen one not in a metal can off a planet.

Eventually they settle on her asking the humans to land near the village pretty please, and she swims off into the air, picking up speed the farther she gets from the village, until not even Sasuke's eyes will be able to see her.

The ship when it comes is nothing at all like the ocean-going ships Sasuke and Hashirama will be familiar with. It's enclosed entirely, for one, the main body shaped like an enormous teardrop with fans trailing from the long end. It hovers in the sky far above, not landing, and from it a smaller ship, this one more bird-like (inasmuch as it has two motile wings and a distinct body), comes and lands before them, settling its wings not folded but at an angle to the sun, revealing shining panels embedded in the white surface.

A hatch opens on the front, and three people step out. One, in the center-front, could be an Uchiha from her coloration, and looks unsettlingly familiar to Sasuke. The two following her are less central for the Land of Fire - one, a man, has darker skin than even the people of the Land of Lightning, and wears his curly hair short. The other, a woman, is pale, with blonde hair bound into a tight bun at the base of her neck. All three wear similar clothes, likely a uniform, distinguished primarily by small details in decoration.

The woman in front speaks briefly to Sasuke and Hashirama's hosts, then introduces herself through Spark. Her name's Chika Nakano (given name listed first), her rank is Captain, and her ship is the Venture. They have translation software, and their machine will be able to analyze the language Hashirama and Sasuke speak and provide a translation back and forth, given enough input.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hashirama has to have software and machines explained to him, but once they are, he's really excited. That sounds fun! Are the computers people? Can he talk to them? What can they do - also his brother's going to want to know all the things, is there any way he can bring back a guide -

Permalink Mark Unread

"Most computers aren't people. There's a mixture - the majority of computers are more like a water wheel. They just do their simple tasks. Some are like horses or dogs. Very few are like people, since there's a lot of ethical debate around when it's appropriate to make a computer that's a person. Our ship does have one that's a person, though, since they're very helpful in exploration. She likes doing the translations, so you can definitely talk to her. The computer, Mal, might be a better person to explain all that... And working on an uplift guide in your language will be one of our goals - uplift is the process of safely transferring technology to a new world that doesn't have the industrial base for it, since sometimes new technologies can cause war and disruption."

(There's a delay in the conversation while Spark and a friend of hers translate everything.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds concerning... But new techniques sometimes do that, so I can see how it happens. If the new technology can get us even a little bit closer to peace, though..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Absolutely. It's why we have uplift procedures, rather than a blanket ban."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's good of you guys."

After some more pleasantries - and saying goodbye to Spark and Spray and all the other friends Hashirama's made in the few days they've been here - they board the shuttle. It's a bit awkward not having a translator, but there's a computer on board with a link to the ship's AI, Mal, and Hashirama gets very excited talking to her and naming things in pictures and making silly example sentences.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke contributes whenever it's apparent there's a language difference between his time and Hashirama's - for all that it's only been a few decades, a lot of slang's changed, and Sasuke's time has had contact with the world beyond the Elemental Nations, meaning a lot of foreign words have filtered in. Sasuke also is more likely to have words or guesses at words for more advanced technologies.

Permalink Mark Unread

The intelligence represents herself with abstract forms that flow softly in color and shape. When talking to Hashirama, she's been leaning towards almost floral patterns - fractal pinks and blues and purples on a background of swirling greens. Sasuke's been favored with sharper contrasts, yellow on dark blue or purple, white slashing through grey.

She's very quickly conversant at a basic level - enough to orient them to the ship and its public facilities with some very thorough visual aids.

Permalink Mark Unread

Captain Nakano will still offer a tour when they arrive, of course, and they're greeted by a small group of spacers when they dock and disembark (which Mal will also help explain), who're clearly holding back some level of excitement.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hashirama takes over all the interfacing with people. New people! It's exciting, even if they don't share a language. It's also amazing, to see humans out here in such a different situation - to see what they're capable of being, given enough room to grow.

(He likes Sasuke best of all the people he's met, but he's plenty fond of Mal and the villagers and increasingly the spacers.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Excited people are not a very fun thing, if you ask Sasuke, but at least they're reserved.

He's interested in the extensive gym facilities - it's a massive ship, especially for the number of people on it, and there's space that'll enable him to spar, especially if he's careful about not overly damaging the walls.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Hashirama notices this!

"Would you like to spar?" he asks, grinning at Sasuke. "We haven't had the chance, so..."

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs, but he's maybe smiling a little. "Sounds interesting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Might help figure out some of what's wrong with my techniques..."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

The rest of the tour is less interesting, except the greenhouses, which are full of plants from across this section of the galaxy as part of the ship's scientific mission.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hashirama promptly proceeds to try and stretch the limits of the translation software - and provide an awful lot of specialized vocabulary - with as many questions as he can get out about all the plants. (He's going to learn to read their language just so he can read their books on botany, even if Mal's offered to translate.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke snorts and shakes his head at Hashirama's bouncing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mal is delighted at the bouncing. Here's pictures of plants, please produce sentences describing them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hashirama is quite good at descriptions both scientific and poetic!

Permalink Mark Unread

The variety is quite nice for this, yes.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Sasuke just lurks, watching, a bit amused. Anything involving producing words has never been his forte, but Hashirama seems to make good use out of his inclination to talk.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually they'll be led to the guest area. The only real limit to size is material, since the ships are constructed outside of the gravity wells, Mal explains, and it's easy enough to scale the thing that makes them fly with the ship. (There's also a limit of 'the ship not collapsing under its own size as it forms its own gravity well' but no one's bothered getting that much material together, and physics works weirdly closer to the galactic center, anyways, so gravity only sometimes applies.)

Do they want separate rooms?

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd rather room together," Sasuke says.

Permalink Mark Unread

From Hashirama: "The same for me, if that's alright!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright," the intelligence says. "Fortunately we have diplomatic quarters large enough."

And they're cozy quarters, too, clearly meant for royalty or equivalent.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks," Hashirama says for both of them. "We'd like to rest now, if that's okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright," says Mal. "I will be able to guide you to the cafeteria when you are ready for food."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Great! Might be a little bit, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is alright. Say my name if you want my attention. Have a good rest; I will turn my attention elsewhere now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"See you then." And, after a pause, to Sasuke, "How are you holding up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke shrugs. It's... Been a long day, and it's tiring, and he's still jumping at shadows and weird noises (internally, he knows better than to flinch), and he's not sure he wants to ever return, but...

"It's interesting," he produces after a while.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hashirama nods. "It is. Like nothing I could've ever dreamed of." He huffs out a laugh. "I suppose a lot in this world is like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods. He's kind of out of words, but...

He thinks he likes this place. So far at least. There's certainly peaceful corners of the Elemental Nations...

Permalink Mark Unread

He grins, and flops on the bed. "We'll find a way to make our homes like this."

Permalink Mark Unread

...That sounds nice, yeah, Sasuke thinks.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hashirama smiles, and says, "Do you mind watching while I sleep?" Sasuke seems to need time alone more than actual sleep right now, so...

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke shakes his head; he doesn't mind at all.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hashirama grins again, then lays down to sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke keeps watch, and makes sure they aren't disturbed in the night.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mal has analyzed a lot more of their language by the time they've both finished resting. (She spent some time learning the writing from Hashirama while Sasuke slept). She's better able to guide them to breakfast, and passes on a request from the Captain for a lunchtime meeting.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke just nods, glancing at Hashirama.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's fine with us," is what Hashirama says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll arrange it then," says Mal. "What do you want to do in the meantime?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke glances at Hashirama.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd like to work on learning your writing system," Hashirama says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That will benefit us both, then, I suspect," says Mal. "Do you wish the same, Sasuke?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke just nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mal arranges basic instruction - it's an alphabet. There's fewer vowel-shapes than vowel-sounds, but these are the most common sounds associated with these vowels... The consonants, at least, have a closer to one-to-one correspondence, though some consonant-sounds rely on combining two other consonants...

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke's able to memorize it rapidly, and with his sharingan he can actually learn to read faster than to speak - though a phonetic alphabet means he'll be learning the latter quickly, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hashirama struggles a bit more - but he's still clearly intelligent, and good at language-related tasks.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mal seems to find this comment-worthy - she's not used to people catching on so quickly, at least not humans or even most aliens.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke shrugs. "I have a good visual memory."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I haven't really seen foreign languages before, but I loved learning to read and write, since it meant I could talk to people in far away places and read about foreigners..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There might also be differences in how your people learn. I wouldn't be surprised, from a divergent population..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke shrugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know a lot about civilians, unfortunately..." Hashirama says. "So I couldn't compare the two groups. Samurai seem about as smart as us shinobi, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"An interesting thing to measure sometime, perhaps," Mal says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes! I'd really want to look into getting our worlds in contact, and that'd be a good aside while we're setting up educational systems..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We don't often encounter worlds in need of intervention - or that aren't already past us - but I've contacted some other ships, so even if we don't have time to take you two by somewhere official, someone might come out to us, and we could coordinate a response there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And an uplift guide was mentioned, too?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd like to start working with you on that, yes, but - it's often not enough on it's own. Still, usually better than nothing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Makes sense it wouldn't be, yeah. Where do we start?"

Permalink Mark Unread

With ascertaining what technology level his world's at, and how magic interacts, which is a long and tedious process that'll strain their shared vocabulary. (Next is politics.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke's helpful in that, being more visually oriented and better able to produce and identify images that different phrases refer to.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then they'll proceed very quickly; Mal can also start organizing a better dictionary of the local main human trade language for them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course, they don't get extremely far before the lunchtime meeting the Captain had requested. He thanks Mal for her help, though, when she indicates it's time to start heading over.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's very welcome, of course.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Captain Nakano is waiting to meet them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hashirama steps forward to take over the talking, greeting her a bit slowly in her own language.

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles in return, very slightly.

"You've come a long way already."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A little way," he says. "I don't know all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'll get there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sometime."

And, using the translation software: "What did you want to talk about?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"First, are you both settling in alright?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think so? Sasuke?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods. "I am."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's good. Do feel free to let Mal know when you need things - flying through space is often pretty boring for me, so I'm interruptible in general."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks! We will. I'd like to talk more, too. Practice the language, but also you're good company."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasuke nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles, softly. "Thank you. Feel free to hang out in the common areas and talk to the crew, too. They're pretty curious about you both."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will. Sasuke might prefer to get caught up on reading."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's entirely fair. The lounges can get overwhelming for me, and I'm more used to everything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not usually one to get overwhelmed by people. Still, it's a problem I can see having."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You do seem the social type."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I usually am! Especially compared to my brother..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's he like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's very - exact. Likes everything a certain way. He's also more curious than anyone I've ever met. Sometimes - not really recklessly so, he won't sneak into an enemy camp to see what they're doing, but he'll mix dangerous chemicals in a lab to see what happens - though he insists it's all with proper safety precautions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know a lot of brilliant scientists like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, that's - pretty much what his thing is? I bet he'd love this place. No real war, just discovering things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, hopefully we can bring him here, sometime."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Regular travel between our worlds would be ideal, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. I'd hope even that alone would shift things for the better..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll likely have to wait and see, sadly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Never fun to be caught in the middle of."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not at all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anything else while I'm here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not that I can think of."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods.

"Thanks."

"You've - given me a lot to think of."

"We have a lot of work coming up, don't we?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We do."

"But I think we can manage it."

Permalink Mark Unread

He smiles, and heads out to find Sasuke.
