Sevet is of the belief that children always should pick their bedtime stories. But he is always glad to tell this story. The story of lake Milliways.
In reality, people overestimate how safe a sea serpent can be on the open ocean, even one that is almost completely grown up like Sevet. It's easy to get lost. Even more so when pirates decide that you and your parents look like interesting food or something.
Sevet didn't like the darkness, but he went deeper and deeper and then... the water changed, from salty to fresh and there was light where he thought below was.
Out of nowhere, a large squid tentacle wraps itself around Sevet. He is almost grow, being twelve, but that's not grow enough to be as strong as he could. And his shapeshifting power is not all there yet. He can make a human face and arms... if he works for most an afternoon. He can't escape a grasp like this.
Luckily, all that the giant squid does is place him on the shore of a lake.
Sevet looks around. There is no river connecting this lack to anywhere else. That's not how water works. I mean, it can be, but where is the ocean?
Apparently, the ocean is nowhere to be seen. And it's hard to believe he failed to spot a island this big. There is a forest around and a building over there.
Also, sitting on the shores, not too far away from where Sevet landed there is a pair of twins with faces quite similar to Sevet's attempt at human faces.
"Is that?"
"Warn you. We are not just similar in looks. This place attracts people from different worlds but who are very similar in looks and history. These are called alts and each kind of alt is a template. People of our template have similar sounding names and some tendencies. Am I correct to assume you want many kids?"
"Our wives, well, not always wives, but our spouses? Or our kids? Are you sure you want to know and not be surprised?" He doesn't wait for the young one to show annoyance. "Like us, they have a color in their last name. We always are gray-something. Theirs are Black, White and Green."
Lord Stephen Grayhunt smiles a very genuine smile.
"Ah, yes. By her, the Black-branch mother, though I suppose she could come in male in your world. Anyway, by her we have two. The first is adventurous, brave and noble like any warrior hero of a tale." He is quite obviously very proud.
"Yes, little one. If you were anyone else I would not dream to share what I will share: they end up hating being seen as weak, specially because of her powers. They have intensively mixed feelings about their healing, but ultimately want to forge themselves stronger. It's a mindset that worries me, you can't be strong all the time. Or keep people out."
"Alright, alright. The green-branch spouse - we only have seen her as a woman, so I will just call her she - is very practical, pragmatic and composed. Out all of our spouses I would say that she is the most likely to cooperate. White-branch... submits. Black-branch will burn bridges rather than cooperate."
He takes the younger one silence as a sign to continue. "Now our only Green-branch child. Sometimes a girl, sometimes a boy, sometimes will actively use magic to change gender, always the most enthusiastic of magic nerds. They are actually very open to learning and experiencing everything, but magic is their one true passion. Sometimes I think of them as a blend of our other two firstborns. Adventurous, kind and curious."
