have you considered that torture is bad actually
Sasuke gets a warm blanket and also therapy
Permalink Mark Unread

His head's spinning. He feels like there's cracks in his mind, like he's ripping apart along them -

The masked man said that Itachi was forced into killing the clan.

Sasuke doesn't want to believe it.

(He does.)

Itachi was crying that night -

(Sasuke doesn't remember if he was too.)

Sasuke killed Itachi when he shouldn't have. He made everything worse and now Itachi is dead

There's a horrible pressure behind his eyes, like a fire overflowing.

Sasuke gasps, and the dam breaks.

Reality pretzels around him, and he's no longer in the underground room the masked man had trapped him in.

Permalink Mark Unread

He crashes onto a table.

Someone shrieks in surprise, and then he is not on the table anymore, he is on a couch, and a woman is standing up from a table that looks as though someone had just crashed into it, staring at him with bemusement and concern.

Also at the table are a blond man, a little girl with curly hair, and a man with black hair with a weird staff featuring an hourglass leaning against his chair.

Permalink Mark Unread

Now on their couch is a teenager who looks like he just lost a hell of a fight and then got some really horrible news on top of it.

He's also now crouching, cursing the fact that he doesn't have any weapons and is still low on chakra - lower than he was, even, he's dizzy and swaying a bit, his eyes won't focus

Permalink Mark Unread

Eliza frowns. She has no idea what's wrong with this poor boy, not really, but if she pokes at his internals a bit, discreetly--well, she has no idea at all what's up with his eyes, but...it seems like the dizziness is caused by a lack of some kind of energy unfamiliar to her? Well, she doesn't have to know what it is to replenish it.

Permalink Mark Unread

 - Suddenly having more chakra is intensely weird, enough to disrupt his rising panic that they might be enemies.

Well. They still might be enemies. He has a lot of enemies.

"What's going on?" he demands.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know, you suddenly teleported into my house--did someone do that to you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I - don't know."

He might've done something. He's not certain.

(At least he's not in that cave - )

(But what if the masked man comes after him here - )

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you alright? Is someone likely to come after you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Someone might. A man in an orange mask."

(He's maybe on purpose ignoring the first question.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "Can--no. What can you tell me, about who you are and who this person is and what happened to you--and what that energy you're using is, I've never seen anything like it--"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's part of the Akatsuki. He captured me after I was in a fight. The energy's chakra - everyone has it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's Akatsuki?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...A group of missing-nin. Where is this?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alaska."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I haven't heard of Alaska."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know what a missing-nin is."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - I might be. Far from what I'm used to." Assuming she's telling the truth. Sasuke's bad at figuring that sort of thing out.

Permalink Mark Unread

She summons a globe from the library.

"This is Alaska," she says, pointing, then holds out the globe in offering.

Permalink Mark Unread

He takes the globe, slowly, and turns it around. "I don't recognize any of this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Okay...hm."

She summons a laptop and hands it to her husband with a brief murmur in English as to what she has in mind. He opens it and starts doing things.

"This is basically unprecedented but, frankly, lots of things are. What do you need? On an immediate or long-term level."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Food, water, shelter. I can work my own way."

If he's on another planet (which means his sharingan probably did do something; interdimensional travel would be unprecedented but not too weird an ability for a Mangekyou), he -

Can't do a lot that he might've been planning.

But he'll have room to think.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Food, water and shelter are trivially easy. Getting you back home if you want to go will be harder but I bet we can figure something out. I--am sure you can work your own way but you look young enough that in this culture you wouldn't be expected to."

Permalink Mark Unread

Why is his brain picking now to be suddenly very sad and anxious. He can function through panic attacks now, but, seriously.

He doesn't really respond externally.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're not going to make you go back. It--sounds like you were in danger there?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug.

He's kind of in danger everywhere; it doesn't really matter.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay.

She has very little idea of what you're supposed to do in this situation but she has, like, instincts.

She summons a soft blanket, warms it, and then strides forward and wraps it around him.

Permalink Mark Unread

He moves suddenly very quickly to the other side of the room.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do you want - "

Permalink Mark Unread

"I want to help the traumatized teenager who randomly landed in my house!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not traumatized!"

He's perfectly functional, it's been an entire two years since the last time he froze in combat -

Permalink Mark Unread

More gently: "I've spent years dealing with people who have just gotten out of variously bad situations. If you say your problems are all acute instead of chronic I have no reason not to believe you, I suppose, but you're not going to sell me on you being okay right now."

Permalink Mark Unread

The child - though to Sasuke she likely reads as old enough to be a shinobi - pipes up from the sidelines.

"Eliza's pretty good. She rescued me, and she's been a good teacher. It's okay to be scared, but the bad things aren't here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not scared!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why not? If I had just been teleported into a completely unknown context I would be."

Permalink Mark Unread

Because good shinobi don't get scared.

(And he's more drowning than anything, his head still full of a screaming grief - )

He looks away.

Permalink Mark Unread

She considers the situation.

She bites her lip.

"If this is crossing a line, then I'm sorry," she says.

She turns to the man with the staff leaning against his chair, and offers him a hand. He takes one look at her face, and takes it. He closes his eyes, and frowns, then blanches.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What are you doing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's past-watching! It's cool, but I haven't figured it out yet."

Permalink Mark Unread

 - That's -

Probably hostile, and he closes in on himself, but -

He's had his history plastered over everywhere before, and it makes people act weird, but he doesn't know - maybe it matters because they'll have an informational advantage about his fighting -

Permalink Mark Unread

"Jesus, kid," the man says. "I want to find this Orochimaru guy and stab him in the face."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's dead."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lotsa people used to be dead, I'm not saying I'd bring someone back just to stab them but if he left a ghost there are ways of stabbing those."

Eliza to Marian: "He doesn't mean it, we do not actually stab people for being horrifying."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What if it stops people from continuing to be horrifying?"

Permalink Mark Unread

And Orochimaru's not permanently dead anyways; the fork in Sasuke's curse seal was removed but there are others. Putting Orochimaru back just to stab him would be dumb though.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Stopping people from doing more bad things is a very different reason for stabbing than being mad about the bad things they already did, and also when you have magic stabbing is extremely unlikely to be the best solution at hand."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay!" She's still not sure when things are 'bad' but she's gotten the 'well ask a trusted adult' answer before.

To the strange randomly appearing boy: "If someone hurt you they should apologize. Apologies are moral because they help reduce the after-effects of harm, and increase social cohesion."

She's really good at this morality thing, if she does say so herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...People don't usually apologize."

That is a very weird concept.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your society uses child soldiers, we're gonna hold ourselves to higher standards than that."

Permalink Mark Unread

He doesn't seem to know what to do with that.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm calling a therapist. Don't...don't use any illusions on him," he tells Eliza.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't generally...car and a pine box?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

He scowls. "Don't talk about me like I'm not here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry. 'Car and a pine box' refers to...Marian was in a car accident and I spent a while awake and paralyzed in my own grave. Specific triggers."

Permalink Mark Unread

He super doesn't like someone knowing what gives him panic attacks, even ones he can work through.

"I'm fine," he repeats.

Permalink Mark Unread

"There are meanings of the word fine other than functional, and I'm pretty sure you aren't any of those."

Permalink Mark Unread

Scowl.

Permalink Mark Unread

"My parents died when I was in that car crash, and I did too, but my ghost got stuck in my body. It's okay to not be fine after something bad happens, even for a very long time."

Permalink Mark Unread

He crosses his arms.

Permalink Mark Unread

"--Chronos, do not literally go call a therapist, not only is doing that without his consent even more of a violation of his boundaries than we've already done therapy doesn't even work on uncooperative subjects," she says as the dark-haired man starts to get up from the table. He sits back down.

Permalink Mark Unread

...She looks at Sasuke.

"I really am sorry for this," she says. "I knew it might be a mistake when I asked him to do that.It looks like I was right, and I apologize."

Permalink Mark Unread

He seems a bit taken aback by that. Definitely disconcerted.

"...It's fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, it's not, it was a massive invasion of privacy. I thought if it could help it might be worth it but even if it did help it would still be a massive invasion of privacy."

Permalink Mark Unread

Things being not fine because they invade privacy is another weird concept, especially since this seems to go past how villages will pretend to be mad at each other for spying even though everyone spies on everyone.

He shrugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So--right now, what do you want. Or need. Or want to throw us off by saying you want or need."

Permalink Mark Unread

It's been at least twenty four hours since he last ate or drank, so: "Food and water."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "Alright."

She goes to a cupboard and pulls out a tall glass and fills it in the sink, then goes to the fridge and pulls out a plastic-wrapped plate of ham and tomato sandwiches and peels off the plastic wrap and brings him both glass and plate.

Permalink Mark Unread

He examines the sandwiches very thoroughly, pushes some of his energy through the water, but seems to find them satisfactory, and - "Can I sit?"

If he's going to be eating that seems less awkward than standing in this corner to eat.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, of course. The living room is a public area; we have guests often enough that everyone who lives here knows not to leave anything out here that it's vital not get messed with."

Permalink Mark Unread

He'll perch on the couch, then, ready to move if he has to, and pick at the meal.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's not poisoned or anything.

Footsteps can be heard on the stairs.

Permalink Mark Unread

He tenses again.

Permalink Mark Unread

The woman who emerges from the stairwell walks like a civilian, at least. She glances at Sasuke only briefly before grabbing a muffin out of a cupboard and leaving through a different door.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Who else is here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's her and us and the twins. The twins are currently out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm Marian, that was Reiko, this is Chronos and Johann and Eliza. It's okay if you want to tell us your name, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm Sasuke."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The twins are Kanimir and Jaromira. Do you want to pick a guest room?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He's squinting at her a bit suspiciously, but -

Getting away from people from a bit sounds at least less unpleasant.

"Sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

The guest rooms are down this hall off the living room. They're all currently empty. They have varied contents along a theme of various arrangements and quantities of bedroom-typical objects.

Permalink Mark Unread

He'll retreat into the most defensible and possibly darkest one.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay.

She leaves him there and goes back to the kitchen.

"Well, that happened," she says, putting her head in her hands. Johann lays a comforting arm over her shoulder and she leans into him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you think he's going to be okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well...probably everyone will be okay eventually. But it takes longer when you don't understand that you aren't."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh."

"I don't know how to make him understand that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Neither do I. Inconvenient how little use vast power is when it comes to social situations."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is there anything I can do to help?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There may be. But don't push him if he wants to be alone, alright?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Maybe he'll like seeing my dinosaur books."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe! Your dinosaur books are mostly in English, though. Do you want to go over them and translate them into Japanese?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll have to look up some words, but I can!"

She gets up and runs off to go find the best dinosaur books and pull up a dictionary.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Whoof," she mutters. "--Chronos, can you--without going into any detail on anything privacy-invading--catch me up on the general state of things where Sasuke is from?"

He does that.

She says a lot of swear words.

"Great," she mutters, rubbing her forehead. "I have...no idea what to do about this. But I can try some things." She closes her eyes and feels around for some kind of--crack in reality, or something, that might have been left by Sasuke's passage. Nothing doing. She tries some more things, while keeping half a magical ear on the area in the vague general vicinity of Sasuke's room but still in public enough space not to be spying on him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then she'll catch the excited child running up to his room some time later. And knocking! Knocking is important manners. Privacy and autonomy in surrendering that privacy is very important.
