obey your earthly masters with respect and fear
in which rainfold hosts multidimensional discussions about The Concept Of Slavery

Imrainai has been skipping daily meditation to work, lately, because her order is very shorthanded. (They're always shorthanded, of course, which makes it something of a poor excuse.) But she's meditating today, sitting in her room in the very early morning, thinking about the things she's grateful for and the purpose of her work and the values that she's dedicated her life to.

And suddenly a person appears, wearing an extremely decorated metal collar with several gems dangling from it. He says something in a foreign language. He's trying to sound apologetic but mostly he sounds confused.

Permalink Mark Unread

She is also confused!

" - how did you get in here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

...Okay, he's apparently going to need to set up translation. He tries to look extremely unthreatening and mimes writing. Even if she can't read there's a decent chance she has some writing on hand for doing magic with, right?

Permalink Mark Unread

She still looks pretty confused, but she gets a piece of paper and a quill pen and an inkwell from her nightstand. She fills the pen and hands it to him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, does she want his language instead, then? He writes a sentence of the minimum required length to make translation work and hands it back.

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes it and looks at it and frowns.

"Okay. I can't read this either."

Permalink Mark Unread

...Her confusion is confusing. He mimes writing again.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can... try writing a sentence for him and seeing if that's what he wants?

She writes "How did you get here?".

Permalink Mark Unread

Doesn't matter if some of the ink comes off on his hand when he touches it, as long as he doesn't smudge it too badly to read. If he were patient he'd wait for it to dry properly but instead he's just very careful about it as he touches the wet ink with one hand and one of the transparent gems on his collar with the other. He says something that still isn't understandable and then...

"I was teleported here by accident. I'm sorry to intrude."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. I didn't realize that was something people could do. Do you - need help getting back to wherever you were before?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, ma'am."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you know where you're from? This is the co-monarchy of Rainfold."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I belong to Lady Vesa who holds land in Esona."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I haven't heard of it. You 'belong' to her?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, ma'am."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just to check, do you want to go back?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He is nowhere near stupid enough to say no.

"Yes, ma'am."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. You don't have to. Slavery's illegal in Rainfold and if you were sent here by a magical accident it could be they can't find you here. Even if they can, they might not fault you for just - failing to convince anyone to help you find your way home. But I will help you go home if that's what you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...It would be interesting to know more about your society but I'm needed back home. I'm not especially replaceable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right. I'll see if can find a replacement for me today, and then - I guess we can take you to the library and see if anyone there has heard of where you're from."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would the library have a world map?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, they'll have an atlas."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then I can definitely find where I'm from even if you use different placenames here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right! Hopefully we can figure out where to send you, then."

And she leads him out of her room and has a short conversation with someone else about needing to have someone else cover her patients. The compound seems to be all women, all dark like her and wearing roughly the same uniform, apart from the number and color of painted wooden beads on the necklaces they wear. The rooms are clean but fairly bare.

Permalink Mark Unread

He tentatively thinks these people might be poor. Any sign of mages or enchanted items?

Permalink Mark Unread

Nothing obvious.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep, poor. He really does want to go home now.

He'll just wait for her to finish her conversation and follow wherever she tells him to go next.

Permalink Mark Unread

She finishes her conversation and heads out of the compound.

It's a lot more crowded outside, and it smells. A lot of people look pretty poor, though some people are wearing extravagant outfits and jewelry and don't look poor at all. There are homeless people sleeping along the walls of a lot of the buildings.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep, this is what happens when you let everyone choose not to do the worst kinds of work. Of course it is. It's surprising that anyone has any jewelry.

"Who are the rich people?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm? I dunno, probably businesspeople? Rainfold's a port city, we do a lot of trade with peoples to the west of here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see." So they're people who deal with more functional societies. Of course they are. "Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mhmm. I guess they could also be people in government or from the university, those people tend to be on the wealthy side? But of course most money is in business. That's how it should be."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How it should be?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. If too much of the money is tied up in the government, it does bad things to incentives."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't understand what that means."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. Uh, I'm not an economist. Just, my impression is that if too much of the money is in the government, then lots of people are motivated to go into government just for the sake of personal gain, and it's better if those people go into business and have to make money by getting individual people to voluntarily pay for services."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...You seem to really care about things being voluntary."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - some things can't be voluntary? Like, we do have laws here. Couldn't have a functional city without them. But - it's better not to force people into things if you can help it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Because it's bad or because it causes bad things to happen?"

Permalink Mark Unread

" - both?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What bad things does it cause?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Inequality, oppression, unhappiness, being deprived of the ability to pursue the things that are best for you and the people you're responsible for? It depends on the specific situation, of course, but speaking in generalities - "

Permalink Mark Unread

"...It doesn't seem like you have the opportunity to pursue the things that are best for you or the people you're responsible for here."
