I can't stop 'til the whole world knows my name
Young Avengers Assemble
Permalink Mark Unread

Fourteen years, three days, and sixteen hours ago, the world experienced a... Blip. M-Day, is what it's generally called.

They say the Scarlet Witch lost her mind.

Whatever the cause, she trapped the entire universe in between moments, folding every single mind into a separate reality - one that ran on her rules. No violence. No war. No disease. No poverty. No death. Good things, most would agree -

But she enforced it through mentally altering all but the most powerful and skilled telepaths, and when she died she brought everyone actively powered down with her. Humanity was hit hard, of course - but many of their galactic neighbors were hit harder, and the blame naturally fell on Earth. Humanity had to scramble to reinvent itself, to develop new technologies to protect the Earth from being razed entirely, despite many of its most brilliant minds having been wiped away.

It's been fourteen years - and it's been just recent that a new batch of powered people has started to come into their own. Mutants, mostly, any with a latent X-gene having been passed over.

Of course, after the Scarlet Witch, the idea of using anyone with powers in the ongoing war is more anathema than using nukes, chemical weapons, or bio-weapons. Many of those who came into their powers - and who failed to hide said powers - in the months and years after M-Day were killed. The rest went deep into hiding.

But anathema does not mean impossible, and they're received word that the Kree will be fielding a team of young superheroes.

The floodgates are broken, and, well - the united nations of Earth will need to step up or face annihilation. Each major member bloc is developing their own response team, to be fielded under the header of the United Earth -

Vision's been tasked with making the team for the United States. The president's got the idea of remaking the Avengers - minus the scandal, as they were at their height - fixed stubbornly in his head.

It's... A bit of a challenge, for Vision.

But nothing impossible, and he's identified five teenagers who fit the bill.

(He pushes aside that they'll be child soldiers, not entirely willingly recruited - needs must, after all, and they'll be likely killed if left alone.)

Nausicaa Kaplan, of unknown connection but suspected to be a relative of Storm, a member of the X-Men and frequent ally of the Avengers. Recently fourteen. Born a week before M-Day.

Sue Shepherd, a speedster - a riskier one. Vision's algorithms indicate she's likely a descendant of one of the Scarlet Witch's siblings, and she's got a rap sheet. The connection to Quicksilver, the Avengers' most notorious speedster, will be hard to hide. She doesn't have a birth certificate that he can find - possibly she was a home birth, never registered. She appears to be Nausicaa's age, claiming to be thirteen, born one month after M-Day.

Elijah Bradley. The grandson of Isaiah Bradley, one of the early experiments for Project Rebirth, which eventually gave them Captain America. Isaiah and his children were all killed by the Scarlet Witch, but his grandchildren were left alive - of those, though, only Elijah seems to have developed any sort of super powers. He has the same 'super soldier' set as Captain America, at least. Fifteen.

Theodore Altman. The grandson of one of the earlier Avengers, the original Captain Marvel. A shapeshifter, reportedly, in line with his half-Skrull heritage. His other half, Kree, will need to be either concealed or played up. Vision will leave that to the propaganda departments. Fourteen, born six months before M-Day.

Cassandra Lang. The only daughter of Scott Lang, Ant-Man. She took up his research with the Pym Particles, and Vision suspects she's been experimenting on herself. She seems to have the power to change her size. At sixteen, she'll be the oldest team member.

Only five possibilities so far - but enough for a test run, before they commit too many resources to this idea.

He sends off the dossiers with only a little hesitation.

Cassandra Lang comes easily. She's come the closest to working with the government, and she wants, desperately, to be a hero, to have some connection to her dead father -

Her mother and step father don't approve. But her step father's a cop, and he respects their leaders. Her parents sign off on her inclusion in the Young Avengers Initiative.

Cassie Lang, wearing a suit like her father's, tailored just to her, waits, mask off, for her future teammates to arrive.

Sue Shepherd's a harder sell. She's thirteen and has already been in and out of juvie once. They bring up great heroes, great speedsters, of the past, her world's need - she glances away from the lawyer, asks if she gets her phone call now.

They threaten her with reviving the old prison for super villains; she shuts down.

Her lawyer is a public defender, a tired, harried man, but he refuses to let them bully her into service. Into war, as a thirteen year old, they should be ashamed of themselves -

She's smart, though. She knows she's not getting out of this.

She accepts a large paycheck, a legal document guaranteeing the rights of her and her future teammates, and a few backroom deals getting wording adjusted in this or that bill. Even her lawyer seems surprised by that last; she says, nonchalantly, that maybe she'll be a lawyer someday herself. Like She-Hulk.

Her lawyer wishes her well, gives her his card.

And Sue Shepherd goes to meet her team. In street clothes. She's not putting on that leotard they designed for her.

Elijah Bradley isn't a hard sell, but he's bitter - the system destroyed his grandfather, and it chewed up his father and spat him out, and his mother worries, of course she does...

But Eli wants to prove himself.

He accepts, and even wears the Captain America knock-off they press on him. He's silent when the team gathers, considering them.

Teddy Altman had not, actually, known he wasn't human until the government spook showed up at his door - the ensuing conversation had been awkward, Teddy's mom (apparently adoptive, and a Skrull agent) trying to explain why his alien heritage was kept from him without looking soft in front of the United States government.

Technically, Teddy's a Skrull - nominally human allies - on loan to the human government. His mom had refused to budge on the loyalty question, there.

He's still human shaped, though, when he goes to meet his team, wearing the purple gymnast-style suit that should shift with him. The suit's design seems unable to decide if it wants to call to mind the Hulk or the Skrulls.

Permalink Mark Unread

It isn't, so much, than Nausicaa Kaplan's a hard sell...

Well.

She doesn't actually want to get deployed away from her best friend for very long. That seems to be a pretty firm limit for her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Said best friend is about Nausicaa's age. And, incidentally, a prodigy in medicine and biological science with an eagerness to get some actual funding for her experiments - and a willingness to help the government with theirs, of course.

Permalink Mark Unread

It takes some back and forth.

Eventually, Vision nudges the government into a reluctant 'sure.'

Marian Zima will be on the team. Under an alias, of course.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's there, then, in a purple blouse and black slacks, dressed nothing like a superhero.

Permalink Mark Unread

And with her comes Nausicaa Kaplan.

Permalink Mark Unread

"This everyone?" Eli asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. I'll leave you all to introduce yourself," Vision says.

Permalink Mark Unread

Once he's left - "Hey! I'm Nausicaa Kaplan! Heard they're forming a hero team?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. The Young Avengers Initiative, creatively enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Someone's got their nostalgia goggles on, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not a bad idea," Eli says, firmly. "People need a symbol, at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

Marian just shrugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cassie sighs.

"Well, what're everyone's powers? And I guess names and other get to know you stuff - I'm Cassandra Lang, daughter of Ant-Man. Though, seriously, call me Cassie. I can grow and shrink, and I have some super strength. Can't control ants, though. I don't have any siblings or anything, and I guess big hobby is reading scifi books. Pretty excited to go into space."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nausicaa grins at her. "Hey! I'm Nausicaa Kaplan. I don't know which Avenger I'm supposedly related to, but they're guessing Storm, since I have weather control. I can fly, throw lightning, and mess with the weather. I have two baby brothers. My favorite hobby's gardening, though I also like trying new foods whenever I get the chance. Don't know if that's really a hobby, though... And space sounds cool!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Marian sends a fond glance at Nausicaa.

"I'm Marian Zima. Just - Marian. No diminutives. Definitely don't call me Mary. I don't have powers per se, but I am a prodigy in the biological sciences. Nausicaa dragged me along, and I'll be joining the more behind the scenes parts. R and D, hopefully. I like long walks on the beach, star gazing, and poking dead things with a stick. I'm more excited about the aliens than anything." Maybe they'll let her dissect some.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm Teddy Altman," the guy who's been mostly quiet so far says next. "I'm actually descended from the original Captain Marvel. I'm half Skrull, half Kree. I can shapeshift like the Skrulls, though apparently I'm better at it than average?" He shrugs. "Can give myself flight and super strength and all that. But I mostly just - want to help out."

Permalink Mark Unread

Marian starts to ask about his biology but closes her mouth when Nausicaa kicks her in the ankle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eli sighs.

"I'm Elijah Bradley, or Eli. I've been tentatively appointed as team leader in the field, though that might get changed around after training. I'm descended from one of the early experiments for Project Rebirth - which ended up producing Captain America. I've got the standard super soldier set, pretty much."

Permalink Mark Unread

And then everyone turns to look at Sue.

She stares at them silently for a few moments.

Then: "My name is Sue Shepherd. I'm a speedster. I don't have hobbies."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi!" Nausicaa chirps. "Do you want hobbies?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Quick question, are you two related? Sue and Nausicaa."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You guys just - look a lot alike."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe spooks will try to claim we're cousins or something for the PR."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Could be."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't really like lying to the public like that though..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Trying to get a good public reputation... It's a lot of maneuvering, and some of it's pretty dramatically stretching the truth. But it's for a good cause."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Always is," he says, not quite sarcastically.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I trust our government's judgement."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not gonna argue that." At least not in front of government cameras. She's not stupid. "But it's normal to not like all the publicity stuff. Movie stars talk about it all the time, and their whole job is being in front of a camera."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess so, yeah..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The whole idea of celebrity's pretty weird to me, too," Teddy volunteers. "Thought I was a normal kid until recently."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I grew up with it - but, yeah, most people don't..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I always knew I had something weird going on, but - yeah, mostly grew up normal. Out of the spotlight and all that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Knew my family had supers in it, but... Wouldn't call us celebrities or anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, and glances at Sue and Marian.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sue just stares blandly back.

Permalink Mark Unread

Marian shrugs. "I knew about Nausicaa's power, and I've always been in the spotlight a little for being smart, but I'm the token normal, here."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

"Are we doing much more than a meet and greet, here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think just that, until someone comes back to brief us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I'm all out of generic introductions."

There's nods all around.

Permalink Mark Unread

And so they're left to wait.

Not for long, though. The Vision returns shortly thereafter, not so fast to make it blatant they were being watched, but not a long enough time for them to get really bored.

"Everyone all settled?" he asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Got introduced, at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good." He folds his hands behind his back. "You six will form the core of the Young Avengers Initiative. Superheroes, accountable to the government - and through them, the public. A team meant solely and wholly to defend Earth and America from exceptional threats, especially on the galactic stage. You'll be using code names, and your real names will be concealed at a minimum until you are legally adults."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are we picking those out? The code names."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The matter is a bit too - delicate, to leave to the aesthetics of specific youth, is the general consensus. Your image and code names were developed by the public relations department."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So the Captain America model again."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Exactly so. Captain America, the world's first acknowledged superhero, was a loyal servant of his country. He worked closely with the various departments involved in public message in the second world war."

Permalink Mark Unread

He never actually met the original Captain America.

He doesn't really care, though. Propaganda's the same.

He nods. "So what's the 'message,' then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A legacy team, all related to prior Avengers or allies thereof, in the mold of Captain America. Soldiers who fight for their country's freedom from tyranny, and whose sacrifice takes the heat off their fellow soldier."

"Elijah Bradley, to be known as the grandson of one of the early members of Project Rebirth, blessed with the powers his grandfather never managed. Your identity will be harder to keep covered, but not impossible, and we should be able to keep your family's name out of the media. You will be the official team leader, with the code name Patriot."

"Cassandra Lang, genius daughter of the most recent Ant-Man, who wishes to take up her father's mantle. Fortunately, your father's secret identity was never compromised. You will be Patriot's second, with the code name Stature."

"Theodore Altman, son of the original Captain Marvel and a Skrull princess. Your father's Kree heritage was never fully revealed, and we will take steps to keep it that way. The skrull are our allies, though, and you will be publicly known as the child of one of our heroes and one of theirs. The public relations department would also like to draw some parallels to the Hulk, who is more well known and liked, and as such your code name will be Hulkling."

"Nausicaa Kaplan, speculated to be a relation of Storm, a member of the X-Men and an ally of the Avengers. You will be publicly listed as her granddaughter. Your code name will be Tempest."

"Sue Shepherd. Due to your... Uncertain background, and your strong resemblance to Nausicaa, your public persona will be as her younger sister. Your code name will be Jet."

"Marian Zima will be explicitly a normal member of the team, a way for the everyday American to feel connected. Your persona will be mostly based around your brilliance in biological and medical sciences. Your code name will be Ouroboros."

"Any - irregularities - are best kept out of the public eye, as well as any conflicts within the team."

Permalink Mark Unread

Public relations bullshit, great. Not getting angry at the blatant dismissal of his grandfather is - hard.

Still, he just nods, tersely.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Works for me, I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I - don't know I'll be good at lying..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You won't be in front of the media often, nor will you be giving a lot of live interviews. Our media departments will handle the spin."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Okay, I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm fine with all that."

Permalink Mark Unread

People glance at Sue.

She stares back, unimpressed.

"I'm not going to go to the media, or anything, but I'm not getting up there and lying for you all."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sigh. "You won't be required to talk to the media."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fine." She leans back.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Does anyone else have questions?"

Permalink Mark Unread

They all shake their heads.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Public relations wants to work with you all on image, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All at once?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"At first, yes, though they'll also be speaking to you separately afterwards."

Permalink Mark Unread

She glances at her future teammates. "Should we go now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Whenever you are all ready."

Permalink Mark Unread

There's some general murmurs, all mostly agreeing that now's fine enough, with varying enthusiasm.

Permalink Mark Unread

He leads them to another room, then. An office, bland, the only personality a collection of cheap knick-knacks on the desk of the public relation specialist.

The Vision leaves.

Permalink Mark Unread

The specialist smiles, her expression bland and somewhat fake.

"Good morning!" she chirps.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nausicaa is the only one even remotely enthusiastic about chirping "Morning!" back. The others kind of mumble it.

Permalink Mark Unread

The specialist seems zero bothered by this, instead launching into a PR spiel like she's talking to the final audience and not the people supposed to be pulling it off.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, that's just wonderful.

Marian mostly just keeps her expression unimpressed, and does not make trouble for the PR person.

Permalink Mark Unread

Neither does anyone else, no matter how unimpressed they look.

Permalink Mark Unread

What a lovely meeting!

Does anyone have feedback?

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope."

That seems to be the consensus.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then the public relations specialist will let them get on their way!

Permalink Mark Unread

So, where to next?

Permalink Mark Unread

Costumes, apparently, then team training.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nausicaa seems to be the only one enthused about this!

Permalink Mark Unread

Great. She can distract from how utterly unenthusiastic Sue is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Or pretty much everyone else. Marian's being attentive, taking notes and asking questions... But she's reserved as she does so.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, the costumes specialist is willing to answer questions; he seems happy enough about Marian's.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadly for him, everyone else seems to want to get this part over with - Teddy's pretty universally unsure of everything recommended, but doesn't have specific objections or recommendations.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eli seems to be mostly keeping his opinion to himself, here.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, once the costumes specialist cottons on to that - pretty quickly, disinterested teenagers are an exceptionally obvious type - he moves the meeting along, proposing basically finished designs just enough to check for open objections.

And, receiving none, he thanks them for their time.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's welcome.

Eli guesses it's team training next, then?

Permalink Mark Unread

That seems likely, yes.

The training rooms take up an entire level, centered around a massive gymnasium.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nausicaa bounces, a bit.

How do they want to do this?

Permalink Mark Unread

"We should at least see each other's powers, first."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. We can't exactly develop plans if we're totally in the dark about what we've got to work with."

Permalink Mark Unread

She hums. "That makes sense..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So who's showing off first?" Sue asks, crossing her arms and leaning against a wall.

Permalink Mark Unread

Some uneasy glances at each other, some shrugs, then - "I can," says Cassie, "Though I'll need some space."

Permalink Mark Unread

Elijah is the first to step well back.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sue's already giving everyone a lot of space!
