Adedayo Igwe wakes up and stares at the ceiling.

Because it's a day like any other, he spends no more than five minutes doing that before sitting up and stretching. He scratches his back then swings his legs to the side and stares at the floor for another minute or so. Then he gets up and finds clothes, absolutely ordinarily. They're nice, and very similar to one another. He goes to his bathroom, and he brushes his teeth. He returns to his bedroom and sits on his bed again. He waits there until his alarm tells him it's time for breakfast. He makes it stop chiming, and gets up again. He walks towards his door. He stops before opening it.

He pings Anthony.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Everything okay?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Yeah, I guess,] he sends. [Just—reassurance. Wanted to hear a friendly voice.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Yeah.] Pause. [It seems like a few people did.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Mm. How's everyone?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[A few people panicking, to various levels, but they're keeping it together okay on the outside.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Are you sure? It... wouldn't be very good if they let it on.]

He takes a deep breath and opens his door, stepping into the hallway.

Permalink Mark Unread

[I'm checking on them but they so far seem fine.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Mmhm.]

He walks towards the cafeteria, and some others are going the same way.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Everything should be ready.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Mmhm,] he repeats, and gets to the cafeteria. Some of the earlier birds are already there, and Dayo looks around for someone in specific, but fails to find them so just goes to grab some food.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony comes in a few minutes later, seems to notice someone, and goes over to them, smiling.

Permalink Mark Unread

And then a girl walks in, looking sleepy, and goes after food, too. She spots Dayo when he's making his way to the table and walks to him. "Hey."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey."

Permalink Mark Unread

And a few moments later, Anthony is done with the conversation with that person! He fetches some food, and then towards Dayo he goes, waving when nearby.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello, you," he greets.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey," he smiles. "You two okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, alright."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good night's sleep?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Eventually."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I always sleep well."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

Anthony eats some of his breakfast. Yum.

Permalink Mark Unread

A couple of Hall Monitors walk in to eat, too. Dayo very carefully does not scowl at them.

[I don't feel amazing about this.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Don't feel amazing like you don't feel super confident?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[No, like we'll probably have to hurt a lot of these people and that's not super nice.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Yeah.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[You sure none of them would—?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Pretty sure. Can't tell for sure, but – at this stage it might be too risky.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Yeah, I know.]

Om nom. More people wake up and trickle into the cafeteria. Hopefully they don't send anyone any meaningful looks.

Permalink Mark Unread

No meaningful looks! Or at least, no surprising ones that could indicate anything nonplausibly innocent.

So, basically, there are a couple. But they could just be suggestive looks for… other activities.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hopefully Anthony's keeping a metaphorical eye out.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's trying. Literal eye out in some cases. He might be talking to people, reassuring them, but if so it's not obvious from the outside.

Permalink Mark Unread

He finishes his food.

Permalink Mark Unread

She does, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

And then so does Anthony.

Permalink Mark Unread

And they wait, in silence, for everyone else to finish eating. When they do, a young woman walks up to the little stage over there by the wall and beams at them. "Good morning, everyone!" she says, her voice magically amplified.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good morning," responds Anthony, dutifully.

Permalink Mark Unread

As does everyone else, in semi-unison.

"It is a beautiful Saturday, so there are no classes, but of course that's no excuse to let up on studying. Exams are soon!" she chirps, and laughs a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Polite smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anyway. It's time for the morning activities, so if you're scheduled to hold one or help with organisation, you know what to do! And if you don't, feel free to ask me or any Hall Monitor, we're here to help." She beams. "Breakfast time ends in ten minutes, so if you want to," and she leans forward and cups her hand around her mouth to stage whisper "grab an extra snack or two" she straightens back up "now's the time!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Hahaha.

(Ugh.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She continues beaming. "Thank you very much for your attention, and remember, our Leader loves you dearly!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"As we love our leader," chants Anthony, trying to sound sincere, as always.

Permalink Mark Unread

She steps down from the stage and leaves the room.

[Delightful.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[As usual.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[You gonna do anything this morning?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Scheduled to help out in the kitchens.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[I have cafeteria cleanup and then room tidying.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[I'm going to look after the little ones during sports.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[At least we won't have a ton of time to worry,] responds Anthony, mentally sighing.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Speak for yourself, I can multitask worrying and cleaning.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Try doing that while talking to people. Telepathically. And trying to hold regular conversations too.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Look me in the eye and tell me you do not find a way to worry amidst all that.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Maybe I'm just really bad at multitasking.] Mental sigh. [Or maybe I do worry.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[It's almost like I know you or something.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Shocker, that.]

Permalink Mark Unread

He smiles. [I should start doing stuff.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Same.]

"See you guys later," he says, and then he goes to clear up his bowl.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Later."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bye."

She gets up and moves on to do her own Activities.

Permalink Mark Unread

To the kitchen with Anthony.

It's not that bad, actually – possibly one of the better of the shifts. He always liked cooking with his mom.

Permalink Mark Unread

The Monitors still breathe down their necks, though, making sure they won't make any mistakes. Today's Monitor is one of the ones who likes hitting people with a spoon when they do and electrocuting them if they backchat.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony doesn't backchat! Anthony is used to having conversations in his head, he can just have conversations in which he tells the Monitor to shove off, without ever actually saying it to the Monitor! (Of course, it's less satisfying with a pretend Monitor in his head, but still.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, the Monitor knows that Anthony is an angel, everyone knows that Anthony is an angel, everyone loves Anthony.

Permalink Mark Unread

… Anthony tries hard to be nice? (As usual.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course he does.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Sigh.)

Permalink Mark Unread

He gets a ping.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Anthony speaking.]

(Duh.)

Permalink Mark Unread

[Delivery truck will be here at eleven thirty-six sharp.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Do I need to do anything when it arrives?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Just do your thing, coordinate stuff, it's all gonna work out.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Got it.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Thanks for all your help, man.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Thank you, too.]

Permalink Mark Unread

Soon they have done all they are supposed to do, and the Monitor shoos them, telling them to go do "whatever it is you initiates do when you're not being useful" before the Speech.

Permalink Mark Unread

So Anthony looks around for anybody who looks like they might need some help, and if he finds nobody he goes out to the yard so he can lean against the wall and take a breather.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nobody who would actually ask for help out loud. A couple of people who might do it via telepathy, if a Monitor isn't likely to object.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, he'll go help a couple of people, then. If the Monitor isn't likely to object.

Permalink Mark Unread

This particular one isn't.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nice of them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dayo meets up with Anthony in the yard a while later. "Hey there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Morning's been a little tough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tough how?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Keeping busy," he responds. "That's all – never mind."

[Monitors being Monitors, mostly.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Ah. Yes, of course. Today's was Barbra, she decided she didn't like the look of me and electrocuted me a couple of times. I think she gets off on it.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Hope it wasn't too bad.]

"How's your day been?" he asks, keeping up appearances. They are in the yard, after all, and so likely being watched.

Permalink Mark Unread

They're probably used enough to the way Anthony's telepathy gets him to pause in the middle of live conversations. And if they're not that's their problem for being unobservant.

"Been alright, kinda boring."

[It could be fun, actually, if she cared one bit for consent.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Electricity, huh?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Don't act so surprised.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Of course I'm not surprised.]

He may be smirking a little.

Permalink Mark Unread

[We might die tomorrow.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[… Yeah.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[So,] he says, brightening up suddenly, [when do you have your next break?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[This afternoon sometime – when depends on how they feel at the time.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Wanna have 'we might all die or worse tomorrow' sex then?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[… You know what,] responds Anthony. [I might.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Cool! Can I kiss you?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Sure the Monitors won't complain?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Their issue if they do. ...just let's not be super out in the open and make sure Barbra's not around.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Pretty sure she's not, but I could be wrong.]

Permalink Mark Unread

So he wraps his arms around Anthony, reaching one hand behind the other boy's head, and kisses him.

Permalink Mark Unread

The other boy kisses him back.

Permalink Mark Unread

And he thinks he'll press Anthony against a wall and run his hand through Anthony's hair.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony objects to this precisely nil, apparently happy to be pressed against a wall.

He kisses Dayo with a bit more force.

Permalink Mark Unread

Someone clears her throat.

Permalink Mark Unread

– Anthony's a little pressed up against the wall right now. So instead, he responds: [Hi.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Really? Not even gonna pause that to acknowledge I'm interrupting you?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Who is it?] asks Dayo who has his back to Vivian.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Dayo, Vivian,] sends Anthony, relaying chat between them.

He is still pressed against a wall! Gosh.

Permalink Mark Unread

He very much is, and as far as Dayo is concerned will remain so.

Permalink Mark Unread

[It's not very polite to ignore people, you know?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[It's not very polite to interrupt two hot boys making out.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Full of yourself, aren't you? But is it alright to interrupt them if they're not hot?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Doesn't apply here, fortunately,] comments Anthony.

Permalink Mark Unread

[You two are terrible,] she says, and starts walking away.

Permalink Mark Unread

[– Did you need anything?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Nah, just wanted to bother you two. Have fun, Speech is in a bit.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[See you later.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Bye!]

Permalink Mark Unread

More kissing?

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony continues to be pressed against a wall so duh what else would they be doing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well he could pull away, or push Dayo, or any number of things that are not kissing him!

Permalink Mark Unread

Could.

But why would he do that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Who knows! Not Dayo, he's not the telepathic one.

[Damn Speech.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[We should maybe get going.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Yes. Yes we should.]

He is still pressing Anthony against a wall.

Permalink Mark Unread

He is.

[… We probably have about a minute before we actually really need to get going,]

Permalink Mark Unread

Then it will be a very enjoyable minute!

And then he pulls away, sighing.

Permalink Mark Unread

[We should do that more often.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[If we survive tomorrow, I'll definitely take you up on that.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Joy of joys.]

Speech-wards.

Permalink Mark Unread

They reach a small auditorium, housing some twenty seats—there are others where some other people are going to watch, it wouldn't do to make this seem too impersonal—and Dayo finds an empty one to Vivian's left.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony seems like he's going to follow Dayo, but then notices someone else in the room, looking quite tired, and decides to go sit next to them instead.

Permalink Mark Unread

Once everyone's there, a woman (not the same one from breakfast) shows up and climbs the steps to the stage.

"Hello! I hope everyone's enjoyed their mornings."

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony nods quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Our Leader's Speech will begin in just a few minutes. Please make yourselves comfortable, as usual, and smile big for him!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course.

Permalink Mark Unread

And after a few minutes, the cinema screen comes alive with the Leader's image.

"Good morning, world!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good morning," responds Anthony, smiling.

Permalink Mark Unread

As does everyone else.

"It is now precisely eleven twenty-nine and fifty-four seconds," he says, but of course this sounds different depending on what timezone's watching. "And I am so very happy to see that you are all here and well."

Permalink Mark Unread

He suddenly turns serious and looks at one specific person... somewhere. "Except you, Lucas Flynn, you're late."

Permalink Mark Unread

And he's happy again. "But everyone else's here! Today's a bright Saturday and we have news! Tomorrow's delivery day, and because of everyone's hard work we've upped the allowed dose of chocolate per citizen by fifteen grams per week!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Yay! Anthony looks happy and tries to look thankful about this!

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course! Why wouldn't he? But given that he's in a compound he actually normally gets even more chocolate than the average citizen.

"And also, given that it's Saturday, it's time to select this week's big winner who will be able to spend a whole day in the main compound! They may even see me!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Ooooooh, thinks Anthony (quietly), completely without sarcasm.

(There is a lot of sarcasm.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"So! Let's see who the lucky one is..." He waves a hand and a set of self-rolling drums is conjured out of thin air, and then a flowery envelope appears, and he makes a show of opening it and reading it. "One Vera Clover, number two billion seventeen million five hundred and seventy-three thousand eight hundred and four!" He beams brightly at the camera.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Poor sod. Well, might not be that bad for them but.)

Anthony tries to smile back! Sincerely!

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'll be teleported to the compound tomorrow morning at seven AM sharp! Do be ready," he says, and winks at the camera. He goes on to talk a little bit about international news—everything continues to be just great, isn't it nice he's around to make sure everyone cooperates and there are no distribution problems? He thinks so.

And then they have to sing the Empire's anthem.

Permalink Mark Unread

Singing! Look how enthusiastic Anthony is, gosh.

Permalink Mark Unread

And eventually everyone's done singing, the Leader wishes them a good day and bon appetit (for it is lunch time), and disappears.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony has a quick word with the person next to him and then goes back over to Dayo and Vivian.

Permalink Mark Unread

"My, what a rejuvenating and exciting Speech!" he says without a hint of sarcasm.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was good," agrees Anthony.

[My, what an actor we are.]

Permalink Mark Unread

He giggles, and winks. "Let's have some lunch."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe even eat some chocolate."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like a plan."

Permalink Mark Unread

Therefore: food!

Permalink Mark Unread

Quod erat demonstrandum. Or comedendum, or something.

Food!

Permalink Mark Unread

And then Dayo has early afternoon chores.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Anthony has a small break right now.

Then he too has chores.

Permalink Mark Unread

Vivian doesn't! But after the chores it's dedicated study or exercise time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Today, Anthony is doing drills on Portuguese vocabulary.

It may be useful someday. Plus he likes the sound of the language.

Permalink Mark Unread

Knock knock.

Permalink Mark Unread

[– Hello?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Hiya! I am in need of help studying mathematics, it is tragic.]

Permalink Mark Unread

So Anthony opens the door! "Hello."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Any particular bit of mathematics? Or just, I dunno, all of it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He walks in, pushing Anthony farther inside and closing the door with a foot, until he's gotten Anthony to sit on his bed. "Basic arithmetic. Can you calculate you plus me minus our clothing over this bed?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony raises an eyebrow. "I think that might be a bit out of scope, I'm afraid."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is that so? I'm afraid I don't know enough maths to tell."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe," says Anthony, "we'll just have to work it out together."

Gosh, whatever will he do all on his bed like this.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Click here to skip the explicit content.)

He will have his shirt removed is what he'll do.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh dear. That's just so awful.

Permalink Mark Unread

Terrible, really. He will also have Dayo's lips trailing down his chest.

Permalink Mark Unread

He does not seem displeased by this course of action.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good! We wouldn't want him to be displeased, would we? [Now please give me your thoughts about this, like I said I'm not very good at mathematics and might need some guidance.] And he slides one hand into the front of Anthony's trousers.

Permalink Mark Unread

[– I feel like the metaphor might be getting a bit stretched.]

Permalink Mark Unread

He squeezes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony makes a bit of a noise.

Permalink Mark Unread

[You were saying?] he asks as his lips move to one of Anthony's nipples and he starts nibbling while his hand gets busier.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Nothing,] he responds, sounding quite calm.

He doesn't particularly look it, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Mmhm,] he sends, and proceeds to jump on top of him and pin him against the bed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony is thoroughly pinned.

… It doesn't seem like he's trying too hard to resist! Or maybe even at all.

Permalink Mark Unread

That is the appropriate reaction to being pinned down by Dayo, yes.

Now where was he? Oh, yes, nibbling his way down Anthony's body.

Permalink Mark Unread

Positive responses.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good. Anthony can remain pinned down while Dayo nibbles on him, this is a good state for now (oh and he was so careless when he removed his hand from Anthony's trousers, it looks like there's something peeping out of there).

Permalink Mark Unread

Gosh, is there.

[You'd think we'd never done this before.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Exploring your body is as delightful for the hundredth time as it was the first time.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[I don't know that it's the hundredth time, but – that's sweet.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Practically sugary,] he sends, because his lips are quite busy—he seems to be reaching a critical area.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony smirks a little.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hopefully he'll be doing more than just smirking once Dayo has undone his trousers and has Anthony in his mouth.

Permalink Mark Unread

He is. It's a bit more smirking at first, and then some slightly heavier breathing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dayo can do better than just heavy breathing if he works hard and believes in himself (and also finds some lube and uses a finger or three).

Permalink Mark Unread

It does not require much belief!

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, good! But eventually he decides he would rather finish removing Anthony's trousers (and shoes, those should go, too), get naked himself (unfortunately he's no longer pinning Anthony), and wrap Anthony's legs around his neck. At some point during his undressing process he managed to acquire a condom, too.

He looks into Anthony's eyes and raises an eyebrow (while one hand holds his own cock to tease Anthony's hole).

Permalink Mark Unread

[What are you waiting for.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[That,] he says, and then he's inside.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony moans in response.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good, that's exactly what he was going for. He reaches down and uses his hand to help.

Permalink Mark Unread

He gets more moaning for his effort.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good. He himself is—not exactly quiet. He slips out... and then in again, with quite some force.

Permalink Mark Unread

That gets him a grunt!

Permalink Mark Unread

Just a grunt? Maybe he should do it a few more times. For science.

Permalink Mark Unread

It gets a louder grunt. Then it's a little bit like a moan.

Then, yep, definitely a moan. Kinda loud, actually.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

Soon he repositions Anthony's legs so he can lean forward and kiss him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony moves into the kiss very happily.

Seems he likes this arrangement.

Permalink Mark Unread

So Ade'll run his hand through Anthony's hair and keep kissing and pounding until his fingers grip him tighter and he closes his eyes and cries out—

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony grunts.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Dayo flops on him, exhausted, and kisses and nibbles on his neck. His hand is still between them, playing with Anthony, and he's still inside, squirming slightly to try to make him get there too—

Permalink Mark Unread

And then Anthony is over the edge too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good, so Dayo can just relax on top of him, flopped and happy and content.

Permalink Mark Unread

[– Each time.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[...what?] he sends, drowsily, still nibbling on Anthony's skin.

Permalink Mark Unread

[You just rub it in, each time.] Pause. Blink. [Maybe not each time.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Rub what in.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[You might note you're lying on something.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Yes. You.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[… And more of me, yep.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[...ah. Well, I could clean you right up,] he sends, and starts nibbling and kissing his way down Anthony's body.

Permalink Mark Unread

[– But what about yourself?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[You can repay the favour later,] he says, and then he reaches the... affected area... and starts licking it clean.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony giggles a bit.

(He might be a bit ticklish.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Well that's just adorable. He continues his job with joy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony seems like he tries to stop himself a few times, makes a couple of motions to be in a less 'vulnerable' position, and then grabs Dayo off to kiss him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay he's definitely enjoying this, kisses are a good thing to be doing right now. [I wasn't done,] he protests anyway.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Ha,] responds Anthony, kissing him harder.

Then he sort of tackles him, putting Dayo on the bed instead.

Permalink Mark Unread

[!!!]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Didn't think only you could do this, did you?] asks Anthony, and then he nibbles on Dayo's jaw.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Nope. Not at all. You're gonna end up getting me going again.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Oh, darn, how did I not think of that.]

Now on Dayo's neck.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Something tells me you in fact did,] he sends with his mind, because his mouth is busy making noises.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, fortunately, Anthony has a very convenient power for when one's mouth is busy. On someone's neck, on someone's shoulder, working down someone's chest…

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay but does he have a very convenient power for when one's brain is too busy to use that power? Because this might be the case, here.

Permalink Mark Unread

No, no he doesn't.

But he thinks he's quite satisfied with the response anyway.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, he's gotten Dayo going again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Just terrible, look how sad he is of this fact.

A few moments later, he decides to move down further and get Dayo going further.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ayup. That is. Yes. A thing.

(Note that he still has remnants from the previous time on his skin.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh no, that's just terrible – it means Anthony'll have to be extra careful, make sure he gets everywhere.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh dear. Terrible, isn't it.

Permalink Mark Unread

And, you know, it seems like this is getting Anthony going too.

He moves back up and kisses Dayo.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dayo approves very vocally.

Dayo also reaches down and rubs himself and Anthony, together, at the same time. Yes. That's a good idea.

Permalink Mark Unread

That is a good idea, yes.

Anthony approves vocally, back of his throat, still kissing Dayo.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perfect, they will both approve vocally and it's so good the walls are magically soundproof.

"I want you inside me," he gasps, because some things need to be said with your mouth.

Permalink Mark Unread

Some things do.

Anthony grabs the necessary item and starts the necessary preparation.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Dayo practically bounces with anticipation, and actually twitches.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, Anthony wants more of the twitching.

He takes a moment, hovers near the edge… and then he's inside.

Permalink Mark Unread

Did he want a loudly moaning Dayo? Because that's what he's getting. Dayo pulls Anthony closer and kisses him and bites his lip because yes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony is plenty happy to be kissed, apparently rather enjoying himself.

He did in fact want a loudly moaning Dayo.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, good. More biting, more hugging, and Dayo might run his nails along Anthony's back and start moaning his name.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, well. Anthony will have to take long, slooow strokes, in that case.

Permalink Mark Unread

Really? What if Dayo begs for faster and harder?

Permalink Mark Unread

Then Anthony will just have to go even slower, of course.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Please, oh fuck Anthony—"

Permalink Mark Unread

And then he pulls out, and pauses.

And then thrusts in, pretty hard.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh fffuuuuuuuuck—" he yells.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony kisses him. Then pulls out most of the way.

Then in again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes he has lost all coherency.

Permalink Mark Unread

[You doing –] Thrust. [– okay?]

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes," he cries, unable to muster enough mental energy to realise he should be sending this telepathically.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony keeps going, in that case. For a few more thrusts.

Then he pulls out again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh shit oh shit oh shit oh shit—

Permalink Mark Unread

And then back in. It's not too much harder.

It's still pretty hard.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit he pulls Anthony back into a kiss and scratches Anthony's back and bites Anthony's lip and screams—

Permalink Mark Unread

And Anthony keeps going, kissing Dayo also very forcefully.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dayo will be gone way beyond the edge very very soon.

Like, "now" soon.

Permalink Mark Unread

And, with that, Anthony is pretty close to the edge.

Shortly, he's over it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah okay he's completely exhausted and out of energy now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony holds himself up a moment, looks down, and then – decides to just lower himself onto Dayo.

Then he nibbles at Dayo's jaw some more.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep okay that is a thing. Good. It is a good thing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony thinks so too.

He lies there for a minute, then: [Don't suppose you know the time?]

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuggle. [No, you're the one with the remote sensing power.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Doesn't do time, unfortunately.]

He lifts his head up to check the clock, then leans back down. [We have a bit before dinner.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[You could've asked someone!]

Permalink Mark Unread

[To ask the time?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Yeah.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[It took like two seconds to look up,] he smirks.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Two seconds you could've spent kissing me.]

He kisses Anthony just to make his point. Also because Anthony's hot and cute and should be kissed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony kisses back.

[I hope tomorrow goes okay.]

Permalink Mark Unread

Sigh. [Yeah.] Dayo squeezes him. [I feel both like saying a thing and like saying that thing will doom us all plus it's incentivised by the wrong thing...]

Permalink Mark Unread

[… If it's the thing I'm guessing, yeah, sounds like we might be doomed.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[I won't say it, then.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Could say it tomorrow, once we're home and dry.]

Permalink Mark Unread

['Home.']

Permalink Mark Unread

[Well.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Suppose it will be our new home.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Wherever it is, yeah.]

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuggle. [Ugh.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Should be a positive change.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[I mean, yes, but still.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Yeah.]

Permalink Mark Unread

He runs his fingers through Anthony's hair. [I feel like fretting but I have no idea what to fret about.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Not fretting sounds like a better idea, then.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Well yes but then what will I do with all this nervous energy? Not that what we just did does not help a lot,] he concedes. [Speaking of, perhaps a shower is in order. You never did let me finish cleaning you up.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Shower is probably a good idea,] agrees Anthony. [Now?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Yeah, sure, don't wanna get late for dinner—especially due to this.]

Permalink Mark Unread

So Anthony gets up and pulls Dayo with him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, good, Dayo does enjoy being manhandled.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Anthony pulls him towards the bathroom – actually pulls him a bit fast, oh dear, and Anthony kisses him – and then fumbles to turn on the shower.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thankfully the shower is magical and easy to operate so it doesn't take a lot of fumbling.

As for being pulled and kissed: yes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony likes the positivity here.

Dayo can go under the water, then, since he's being washed first.

Permalink Mark Unread

Is he now, okay, sure, Anthony's the boss here.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony's still kissing him, so actually – they're more both under the water, but then he pulls back and smirks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony looks down and – "Nothing."

Still smirking.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dayo rolls his eyes. "Let's just get cleaned," he says, and proceeds to do just that.

He might linger a bit some places.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony laughs, but yes, getting each other cleaned is a good activity.

Permalink Mark Unread

And soon enough they're done and should get dressed again and go have dinner.

Permalink Mark Unread

They are and they do.

[… Seems like people are surprisingly okay right now,] comments Anthony.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Could just be the acceptance phase,] he suggests. They start making their way to the cafeteria.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Could be.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[It'll be fine. Or it won't. But regardless fretting about it today is not—useful. That's, I guess, the best way to look at it.]

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. [I agree. But I'd expect most people to find it harder to just – slot it away.]

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs, too, and then they arrive at the cafeteria.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony scans the room briefly, then heads toward the counter.

People do, in fact, seem relatively calm.

Permalink Mark Unread

Vivian waves at them from a table where she's talking to a friend.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Dayo follows Anthony.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony waves back.

[Food looks nice today. Spaghetti may in fact be my favorite.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Eh, it's alright, I guess.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Spaghetti is awesome and I refuse to hear any disparaging comment against it.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Is a shrug disparaging?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Yes.] Pause. [Ish.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[How is a shrug disparaging.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Well, see, spaghetti is awesome.]

(And Anthony now has a bowlful of spaghetti.)

Permalink Mark Unread

[I'm not really into food in general,] he shrugs, grabbing a bowlful of spaghetti as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

[… Any particular reason?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[It's just not incredible? And a waste of time in my opinion.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[– I mean, if I could not need food I'd definitely skip it, but spaghetti's pretty good.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Eh.]

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony sniffs, tilting his head away dramatically.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You," he declares out loud, "are adorable." And he gives Anthony a peck on the cheek.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, he gets a grin out of Anthony for that. "We should probably go sit, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right, yes."

Table!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey," says Anthony to Vivian, taking a seat at aforementioned table.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hiya," greets Vivian. Her friend—a short girl with dirty blond hair named Carol—waves at the two. "Did you have fun, wink wink nudge nudge?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Dayo, who just sat, sporfles. "Oh my god what are you twelve?" he giggles.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony raises an eyebrow. "We might have."

Permalink Mark Unread

"At least some of us are getting some action," Vivian sighs.

"I thought you didn't like that...?" Carol asks.

"I don't, but it's the principle of the thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"… The principle?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh-huh." He rolls his eyes. "Anyway, how've your afternoons been?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Had chores, but then played some video games and it was alright."

    "I read," Carol shrugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool, cool."

Anthony eats a forkful of spaghetti. It is quite clear that he loves it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're adorable," he giggles.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Spaghetti is delicious!]

Permalink Mark Unread

[It's literally just pasta and like some sauce!]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Yes! Remove the 'just' and you're right!]

Permalink Mark Unread

He laughs and eats some.

Permalink Mark Unread

To be fair it's quite good spaghetti.

(Nom.)

Permalink Mark Unread

And after a while the same lady from breakfast shows up again.

"Good evening, everyone!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good evening," responds Anthony, in time with the others.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Another good day has passed, and I see everyone winding down from it. Dinner will end in precisely twelve minutes, and then those who want to can go to one of the common rooms to watch a movie with us..."

[Only the best for our best citizens,] Dayo echoes the woman's croon mentally.

"Otherwise, it is a good time to settle in for the night for another wonderful day tomorrow!"

Permalink Mark Unread

[You guys up for a movie?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Sure, why not.]

    [Yeah,] Carol agrees.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Sounds good.]

Permalink Mark Unread

And so Anthony finishes off his food and a few minutes later they can head down to the movie.

Permalink Mark Unread

People start gathering. The room is quite comfortable, with lots of sofas and beanbags and a large fluffy rug. There's lots of space for them to settle in.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does Dayo want to sit on a beanbag with Anthony?

Permalink Mark Unread

What a silly question.

Snuggle.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Hee.)

Movie?

Permalink Mark Unread

Movie! It's a very brain dead comedy. Cute and sometimes funny, but not more than that.

Permalink Mark Unread

And then it's probably bed, for most of them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep. Bed time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony has some difficulty relaxing enough to actually sleep.

It doesn't help that others are having similar difficulty and talking to him. At least he's being helpful, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

And too soon, morning comes.

Permalink Mark Unread

And this time, Anthony pings Dayo.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Good morning.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Start of a new dawn and all that.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Yay?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[We might be the start of something great.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Are you quoting something?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Not that I know of. Well, the first thing was, I think, but I don't know what from.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Anyway, let's go get breakfast and get this show running.]

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony sends his assent, and then shortly afterwards can be found at breakfast.

Permalink Mark Unread

Despite everyone knowing they should try to not act suspiciously, a large number of people are awfully quiet today.

Dayo is not one of them, though. "And no one's managed to prove it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But it's been hundreds of years!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony turns to face them. "– Prove what?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fermat's Last Theorem," Vivian explains.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is that the, uh, sum of cubes thing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's the sum of powers of n thing: for no integer n greater than two are there positive integers a, b, and c such that a to the nth power plus b to the nth power equals c to the nth power."

Permalink Mark Unread

"… And someone just decided to state it was true and didn't leave a proof, or someone just suggested it might be the case…?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pierre de Fermat, a seventeenth-century mathematician, stated that it was the case in the margins of a manuscript and said that the proof was too large to be contained there and just sort of—left it at that. Well, he died soon after."

Permalink Mark Unread

"… Shame, that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, and there aren't lots of mathematicians nowadays."

[For reasons known to us all.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Eugh.]

Permalink Mark Unread

"But like. More than three hundred years."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't really keep up to date on mathematical research."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well I like maths," he says, despite the irony.

The line advances enough for them to get their food.

Permalink Mark Unread

Bacon! Egg! Hash-browns!

… Cereal if people want it!

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure cereal's good.

Someone pings Anthony. [Trucks are on their way.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Thanks.]

He checks his watch.

Permalink Mark Unread

A bit past eight.

Permalink Mark Unread

Three and a bit hours, then.

And off to a table, to eat breakfast!

Permalink Mark Unread

And people start messaging him, asking him for specifications of what they're supposed to do, and whether everything's alright, and no one other than a handful of people really knows who else is in this, for infosec reasons, so there's a lot of managing to do while he eats.

Permalink Mark Unread

Only he knows everyone in the group, even.

He deals with it quite well, asking people to hold on a minute and prioritizing the people who sound more worried out of the lot. Tells them what he knows, tries to sound confident and reassuring.

Permalink Mark Unread

Right but lots of them want tactics not comfort.

Permalink Mark Unread

He lets them know what he can, what he's worked out with Dayo and what they need to know to not interfere with each other.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay that's more reassuring.

[You should eat,] Dayo points out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony takes a bite of bacon.

[Thanks.]

Permalink Mark Unread

And then the lady from the previous day appears, grinning.

"Another very good morning, everyone!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good morning," he intones.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Today's a Sunday so most of you will of course be allowed some rest. The basic chores still need to be done, but today is a good day to relax and destress and spend some time with your family! The teen compound and the adult compound will open to each other at eleven, so you can all hear our Leader's words together!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony smiles, trying to seem sincere and not vengeful in the slightest.

Permalink Mark Unread

"And of course, food today extends until then, you can feel free to grab as much as you'd like! Have a happy Sunday!"

[I think one of the best parts of it all might just be never having to hear this woman's voice again,] Dayo comments as she climbs down the steps.

Permalink Mark Unread

[I question your use of 'one of',] sighs Anthony.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Do you have any chores this morning? I'm free.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[I have dish duty,] she mentally sighs.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Gotta supervise the kids until eleven.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Have fun, I guess.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[You too.]

So he goes to supervise the kids.

They are very small and very adorable and he tries not to feel too awful just now.

Permalink Mark Unread

And at 10:42 AM: [Truck's almost here.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Arriving in forty minutes, like expected, or has the schedule shifted?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Might arrive five minutes earlier.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Thanks.]

Permalink Mark Unread

And at eleven he's free from the little ones and any other chores for another half hour, and the compounds are opened to each other.

[I'm in position to knock Naomi out,] says someone of the nice lady.

[Everything ready to go at eleven thirty-two,] someone else sends.

Permalink Mark Unread

[You'll be able to hold that?] he asks, of the well-positioned not-assassin, and he sends a nod to the other person.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Yeah, I'll be around her all day, in theory.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Sounds good. Thanks.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[No prob. It'll work, and by the end of the day we'll be outta here.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Things keep slotting into place.]

He tries not to look too anxious as he checks the other things on his (metaphorical) list.

Permalink Mark Unread

And the adult compound is now open so people can go visit each other.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes! They can. And he goes to visit his parents because that is a nice – fun, normal – thing to do.

[Almost time,] he sends, to Dayo.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Yeah. Viv is ready, so'm I.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Mum's fretting.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[It's a fretworthy thing. I've been practising copying Naomi.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Got it down?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Yeah, probably. Hardest are the mannerisms.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[I don't know that I could be that good an actor.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[I'm very motivated.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[I'm glad. Thanks.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Not sure there's anything to be thanked for, but you're welcome.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[For putting effort in and being a part of this and being around and – a lot of things. Just a general thanks, for being.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[You're going to make me blush.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[… Seriously?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Ha. No.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Aww.] Pause. [Anyway I should probably stop visibly ignoring my mother so much.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Can't multitask?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Conversations are kinda hard to multitask.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Fffine. Have fun.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[You too.]

And then Anthony has a normal, relaxing few minutes with his mom – while he watches the time tick by.

Permalink Mark Unread

And it's soon time for today's Speech.

Permalink Mark Unread

So, of course, everyone assembles.

Permalink Mark Unread

Here's Dayo.

[Almost time. You ready?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Yeah. You?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Yup.]

Permalink Mark Unread

And there's Vivian. [Hey, can I borrow you?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Sure.]

"Be right back," he says, and then follows.

Permalink Mark Unread

And she boops him on the nose. [Thanks!] And saunters off.

Permalink Mark Unread

Snort.

He walks back – doesn't want to miss the speech.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dayo's in the same room he is, and the other kids start gathering.

"Well, we seem to almost all be there, except for Ms. Jordan," says Naomi. "Tut tut. I hope she's not too late!" she trills.

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course not, nope, not at all.

[Your absence has been noted,] he says, letting her know.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Just two more minutes, anyway.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Fifty-nine, fifty-eight…]

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, it appears Ms. Jordan won't be joining us," the woman says, clicking her tongue and closing the door—

—and then a boy two years Anthony's junior taps her on the head and she passes out. Several of the kids in the room already knew this was going to happen, but several didn't, and a couple of them look like they'd scream if the others weren't holding them.

"Okay, what's next?" asks the boy that knocked Naomi out just as the screen flickers on to show the Leader.

"Good morning, world!" says the Leader.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Next we move,] he sends, broadcasting to those around him – and then he heads for the door.

Permalink Mark Unread

The Leader continues speaking, oblivious, while others are knocked out.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Dayo assumes Naomi's form. Anthony receives various messages of success, and one of distress, they need help right now.

Permalink Mark Unread

He sends some of the others that way while trying to get an idea of the problem.

Permalink Mark Unread

The problem seems to be that one of the monitors got the upper hand in one of the rooms, apparently.

Permalink Mark Unread

How much of an upper hand, can they just send a few more people to knock him out or does he have powers that make that hard to implement?

Permalink Mark Unread

He has powers that make that hard to implement, but probably sending Vivian there will be enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

He lets her know.

Permalink Mark Unread

She goes over there and copies powers and helps deal with it.

They're on a tight schedule, the monitors who were allowed not to watch the Speech for security are going to catch on soon.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony's with a group of them, en route to the pickup point, trying to get confirmation from the unknowns still left.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Dayo runs on ahead, pretending to be Naomi and stalling.

Alarms start sounding.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fucksake.

Does anybody have more info?

Permalink Mark Unread

Monitors have been alerted somehow, probably, who knows.

Dayo-as-Naomi is really convincing, actually, they can get away with pretending they're the well-behaved kids.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony tries to hide in the crowd at this point, be less obvious in case they want him to explain why and how he didn't know about it, or something.

Hopefully they can keep progressing. He tries to help the others coordinate to the extent he can.

Permalink Mark Unread

They can keep progressing, Dayo only needs to distract for long enough to knock them out.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Everything's cool,] Vivian eventually says, catching up to them and booping Dayo on the nose. She immediately shifts into another Monitor they knocked out and goes with another group to also lend it legitimacy.

Permalink Mark Unread

The group can get to the pickup point, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Vivian goes in one truck with a group.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dayo goes in the other.

Permalink Mark Unread

Other groups have various levels of trouble but slowly start arriving. The alarms continue to blare.

Permalink Mark Unread

[– We should get out once the trucks are full, get away faster, we don't need to be a pack, right?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Right. Everything... seems to be working alright, though. Alarms are blaring but doors are jammed, no one's actually stopped us...]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Which – doesn't mean we'll get out fine, doesn't mean we'll stay out fine, but does mean we might have a chance.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Yeah. But I can't help imagining all the ways this could go wrong.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Many,] says Anthony. [There are many different ways it could go wrong and it might have already, but hopefully not.]

Permalink Mark Unread

And here's how it goes wrong:

People arrive. Viv's truck is the first to fill up, and it's the first to leave. Then the third truck. And finally theirs. Everyone's very quiet.

[What's next?] someone asks Anthony.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Next we wait to get out of the area. We're heading to a safe house.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Safe house? How do we even stay safe, won't the Leader find us?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[It's protected, there's magic in place.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Really? How'd you find out?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[It's been through a contact.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Who?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[… Why?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Because you're taking us to a strange place and it just now occurred to me I have no idea why we're even going along with it or why we should trust you.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[… This didn't occur to you before?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Well no, clearly!]

Permalink Mark Unread

[You don't plan on attacking them or anything like that, do you?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Do I sound suicidal to you.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[No, so hopefully you won't?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[I won't!]

Permalink Mark Unread

[It's the driver.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Why would you trust the fucking driver.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[… If they were providing a location anyway, it's not like it matters?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[You're sure you can trust them?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[I am sure enough I chose to do this – the Leader is hardly better.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Fine.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[… Sorry if that's not particularly reassuring.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[It's fine.]

Permalink Mark Unread

Anyone else who needs comforting?

Permalink Mark Unread

No, not particularly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then Anthony will reassure himself there is probably not much more he can do.

Permalink Mark Unread

And here's how it goes wrong:

[Er, why is your truck going somewhere else?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[… I have no idea but I should probably ask –?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[You should have already asked!]

Permalink Mark Unread

To the driver: [What's up with the truck?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Ours, nothing, but the other two are going somewhere else and won't answer the radio!]

Permalink Mark Unread

To Vivian: [He says you're all going another way!]

To the driver: [Do you want to talk to them directly?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Why.]

    [Yes!] the driver tells him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Other drivers: [My driver says you're going the wrong way.]

His driver: [I'll relay things.]

Permalink Mark Unread

There is no response from the others.

Permalink Mark Unread

[… Hello?]

Fuck. [Vivian, the other drivers aren't responding.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[What do you mean not responding?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[I mean exactly that – can you try poking them manually!]

Permalink Mark Unread

[They're not responding! Hang on -]

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony contacts Dayo to let him know the situation – [Our truck's not following the others, the other drivers aren't responding.]

And to Vivian: [Are they unconscious or what –?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Not responding how -]

Permalink Mark Unread

And now Vivian is not responding either.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Telepathically and physically and now Vivian's gone too!]

He tries contacting her more – and then anyone else he knows was in the same truck? His mom, does she respond – anyone else?

Permalink Mark Unread

Nada.

Permalink Mark Unread

Crap. [They've all gone unresponsive –]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Ask Michael to try to look for them -]

Permalink Mark Unread

[– Michael where are the other trucks, the others, can you tell me?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[- going somewhere—what's going on where are they going why is everyone unconscious in the trucks -]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Even the drivers?]

Anthony tries contacting Vivian again.

Permalink Mark Unread

[No, the drivers are awake -]

Vivian is still unresponsive.

Permalink Mark Unread

Still unresponsive if he tries them?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep.

Permalink Mark Unread

To Dayo: [Drivers are awake and unresponsive, everybody else is knocked out, I have no idea what to do except call them lost –]

Permalink Mark Unread

Dayo, of course, tries to not look panicked lest he panic the other kids, but: [Fuck fuck fuck—are they not with the resistance—were they double agents or something—?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[I have no idea and I'm worried about our own driver — should we get someone else behind the wheel, not that they'd know where to go?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[I... think if our driver were in on it we would be the ones knocked out. But.]

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony surveys the van. [Don't suppose we're somehow more – important, collectively, strategically useful? Or the opposite?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[...well you are. But the Leader can do everything we can do anyway.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[I'm trying to find some sort of motive, reason our van would be fine or would appear to be so – maybe some sort of test?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Is there anything we can do? We don't know where the place is, if our driver is okay then we're okay and if he's not we're fucked anyway.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[… I was going to say 'at least we're out of the compound', but without the safe house protections… that would appear to be the case.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[...so we just wait and hope.]

Permalink Mark Unread

He tries not to look too visibly shaken.

Permalink Mark Unread

He slips over to where Anthony is sitting and wraps an arm around him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony leans into the hug.

He tries for Vivian a few more times.

Permalink Mark Unread

No response.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nothing he can do about it now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nope. Dayo runs his fingers through Anthony's hair and they wait.

Permalink Mark Unread

Still no response?

Permalink Mark Unread

Nope.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yup.

They drive.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Waiting for more bad stuff to happen is fucking awful.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[That was me all of yesterday and today, yes. I kinda feel vindicated that something bad did in fact happen.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Me, I just feel pretty shit.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Yes, but feeling shit is less fun than feeling vindicated so. Ha.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Eugh.]

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Hey what gives Michael's freaked out,] asks a girl called Lana.

Permalink Mark Unread

[… There are a couple of difficulties,] responds Anthony. [We're trying to figure out how to route around them.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[What difficulties? Michael won't say -]

Permalink Mark Unread

[I don't think it'd help if there were more panic so could you try to be calm, please –?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[I will decide whether to be calm after you tell me.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[The other trucks are – probably not going to make it. Something weird's happened and it's not going to help to panic.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[What.]

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

[So when were you planning to tell us?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Wasn't determined.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[- what? And in light of this why shouldn't I tell everyone else?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Because if people panic it may reduce our chances of surviving, whatever they currently are because I have no idea.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[You could at least think of a good point to tell people!]

Permalink Mark Unread

[A good point would probably be more reliant on the delivery, but yes, I take your point.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[So when are you telling people?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[I haven't decided in the past twenty seconds and it might be worth checking with the driver how long it'll take to get there, don't you think?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[...fine.]

Permalink Mark Unread

He does so.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Another half hour.]

Permalink Mark Unread

… He catches Dayo up on the situation.

Permalink Mark Unread

[She has a point.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[She does. But I don't know how to break it to everyone that everyone on the other two trucks mysteriously went unconscious.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[I mean, you, too, have a point. Tell her we'll tell everyone in half an hour?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Sure.]

And to her: [Do you have strong feelings against waiting the half hour it'll take to get there?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[...fine,] she repeats.

Permalink Mark Unread

Back to waiting, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Twenty-eight minutes later: [We're almost there,] the driver sends.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Thanks.]

To Dayo: [Should we give the speech now or once we've stopped, do you think?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[- once we've stopped and everyone's wondering where everyone else is.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Explain the other vehicles were going a different way, then everyone went unconscious when I tried questioning them, or… do we tailor it somehow? I'm not sure there's a need, but, just checking.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Let's just—tell everyone at the same time, no tailoring.]

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

They feel the truck slow down and stop, then accelerate again, slow down, and stop a final time. The door's opened, and they find themselves in what looks like a large garage. In addition to the driver there are a couple armed people guarding the only door meant for humans.

People start streaming out of the truck and... look around, bewildered at the lack of other trucks.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony tries not to look too awkwardly conspicuously guilty of horrible crimes.

Really, he's not.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...hey, what's up? Where are the other two trucks?" someone asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"… Unfortunately there was an issue," says Anthony, "with the – operation."

Cough.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What issue?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The other trucks –" He makes sure people are paying attention. "The other trucks started going a different direction, and when we tried quizzing them on the behavior the people in them fell unconscious."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What—"

"When did that happen?"

"Why didn't you tell us?"

"Where are they?"

One boy walks up to Anthony and—

Permalink Mark Unread

—is held back by Dayo before he can punch him.

Permalink Mark Unread

… Egh.

"This happened earlier – about half an hour ago – but we didn't want to get everybody panicking –"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're panicking now!"

"My sister was in the other truck!"

"Where are we?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Look, I just – we can't – can we all just calm down please, this isn't going to help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh yeah that's gonna work asking people to calm down—"

"What do we do now?"

"We have to rescue them—"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We have to do exactly nothing," says a voice coming from the one door. Its owner has two bodyguards and is walking towards them. "What happened happened due to a grave error on our part but panicking or trying reckless rescue missions helps absolutely no one."

And unlike Anthony's pleading, that does shut everything up.

Permalink Mark Unread

… Right, he should probably take point or something.

"Hello there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello. You must be Anthony. I am Chief Garland."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am," he responds. "I don't think we've met, or – well, spoken."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We have not," she agrees. "It would be foolhardy of me to leave this place alone."

    "Hey, what—"

"Traitors, is what," she explains, "although this place's magic is such that they can't do much damage once they've left."

    "—um."

"It will be explained."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It would be nice to know… what actually happened."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then you will come with me."

She turns around and starts leading them towards the door.

Permalink Mark Unread

He follows.

Permalink Mark Unread

She leads them through corridors and hallways to a small auditorium with a few chairs. She stands facing them and waits until they all settle down.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony sits at the front.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dayo sits next to Anthony and takes his hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

… Please let this woman not be terrible.

Permalink Mark Unread

"My name is Monica Garland," she says when everyone's settled, "and I lead this little merry band of rebels. There was a small problem, namely that we had traitors in our midst, and they were the ultimate cause of the problems you are now aware of."

Permalink Mark Unread

Does it seem like he's allowed to talk or does he need to wait for the scary woman to finish her speech.

Anthony thinks he will just wait.

Permalink Mark Unread

"They will not find this place, as it is not findable by anyone not associated with us. That is also the reason why we seldom do anything in small groups—the magic that protects us only kicks in for large groups. The compound is protected, as well."

"...okay but how do we get our friends and family back?" a boy asks.

"We don't."

Several people cry out in outrage at that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Augh.

"Why – um, why do we not – get them back –?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Because it would be a suicide mission," she states, simply. "A large enough group would be protected by the magic up until they reached wherever it is the hostages were taken, and then what?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"… Then I assume the magic doesn't make them bulletproof."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Finding-proof only."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And this doesn't conveniently apply to the vision of people who might shoot at them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It does not."

(The others have mostly fallen silent now that Anthony's speaking.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"… So do we have some sort of game plan following forward from here, adapted for what happened?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, but for now the plan is for you to find your accommodations and rest."

Permalink Mark Unread

… He nods and squeezes Dayo's hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Life will not be easy," she says. "Make no mistake, we are not at peace, here. We are resistance, and every one of you is a resource. There is a reason he hoards you—so you will not pose him a threat. Because you are the only ones who can threaten him."

Everyone's silent, now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony does not like how scary this woman is but he supposes it is good to have someone in charge who actually seems like they know how to be in charge.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You will follow the people near the doors. You may choose, with some restrictions, where you will sleep, and any conflicts will be resolved by us with no recourse. Any questions?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I assume the restrictions are clear somehow?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

What an idiotic question. He bites his lip, to give him something to focus on – other than what he's screwing up.

Can they get going?

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, she seems to be going, so presumably.

The others start getting up, in a bit of a daze, and the guards near the doors open them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony tries not to look too shell-shocked.

"I wonder what the restrictions are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Rooms that are already taken?" he suggests, as they're herded through the doors. "—do you wanna room with me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I – wasn't sure whether to suggest it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well I'm suggesting it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh – yeah? … I probably have not thought about it in much detail."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not sure you have a whole lotta time to think in," he says as they're led through hallways.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I – can't think why not? Why not room together, I mean."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Because you might detest rooming with me, or something, or just prefer having your own room."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The former I doubt, the 'something' is what I was trying to figure out, the latter I don't think is a problem."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good, I guess?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good," he agrees, a little subduedly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It feels a bit soon to be happy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't really think that's a good way to frame it—"

They reach a hallway with several doors which seem to be rooms. They're allowed to pick and choose as they please, so long as they don't fight over them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does anybody look liable to fight over a room?

Permalink Mark Unread

Not really. Everyone's subdued and just taking whichever rooms are closest.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then that seems like a good idea for Anthony and Dayo unless some of the rooms can obviously not accommodate two people.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not all can, but some, and they find one easily enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

… And they have no stuff with which to decorate the place or make it seem like theirs or anything!

"Kinda wish I could've brought some stuff."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kinda feel like we came from a rock to a hard place."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll see, I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I hope – they're all okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Me, too." Sigh. He sits on the bed and looks at Anthony. "I didn't say it before but I guess rotten luck anyway, can't get any worse. I love you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I love you too."

Permalink Mark Unread

He smirks. "Such enthusiasm."

Permalink Mark Unread

"– Hey, c'mon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"C'mere," he says, holding out his arms.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

Very hug.

"I want to find out what they have."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The people here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Their resources, their plans. I'll go stir crazy if I'm told to sit tight and look pretty."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think – same, sort of."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sort of?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It would be almost nice to just trust they're competent and will get things done without me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...nah, I'd still want to do stuff even if that were the case."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would. … But it could be nice to have a little break."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can have a break after that fucker's outta power."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which may be after we both die."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hrrm. We still don't know that I actually grow old."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, I guess we don't know that I do either, but – I get your point."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, don't be pedantic," he says, smiling a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, so, maybe after I die. Still."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Won't let you die, either." Nuzzle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.

"… Do we want to go see what they're up to now, or wait, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dunno if we're allowed?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They haven't, I dunno, given us a rulebook, have they?"

He looks up and around, briefly.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a simple room, with the double bed and a closet and a small bathroom. Stark.

"No, they haven't."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I could ask… Not sure who, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs. "Stick your head out the door and see what's there?"

Permalink Mark Unread

That requires disentangling himself from Dayo. He does that, reluctantly, and then proceeds to look out the door.

Permalink Mark Unread

The door seems to be locked.

"Erm."

Permalink Mark Unread

"… Well. I guess I will not be doing that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Guess that answers the question neatly, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do I want to try contacting someone to ask or do we want to not let them know we've found out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm pretty sure if they didn't want us to find out they wouldn't have outright locked the doors."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So should I ask – scary woman who gave the speech, I forget if she gave her name?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Couldn't hurt, I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

He mentally pokes around for her and then – she gets that polite synesthetic knocking request for conversation that comes with his telepathy.

Permalink Mark Unread

[So this is what it feels like.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[It is indeed. Hello.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Can I help you?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[I was wondering the reason behind our door being locked.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[So you don't leave your rooms.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[So as to achieve what?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[You staying in your rooms.]

She might be having fun with this.

Permalink Mark Unread

[For what purpose, something more than staying in our rooms.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Work with me, you're smart. What happens if people can just leave their rooms right now and do whatever, after what just happened?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[They… try escape to go fix what happened?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Bingo.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[… And you included us because you expect us to do that too or because you're being non-discriminatory?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Second thing.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Would you consider letting us out if we made a good case for it?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Of course not, the others don't have telepathy like that and it'd be unfair to them.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[… Except insofar as I could permit them to state their cases also?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Oh, so you could. That is not a bad idea.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[And is it one you plan on implementing?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Sure.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Should I attempt to make my case?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Go ahead.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[… I was actually first going to ask if there was a rulebook with respect to the status quo here.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[How do you mean?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Are there non-obvious things that if we do we'll get thrown out, and are there obvious things that are bad but have non-obvious punishments…?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[We wouldn't punish anyone for violating rules they didn't know were wrong!]

Permalink Mark Unread

[… Are there particular non-obvious things that would be bad that we should try to avoid once we know they're wrong?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[We don't have a book of laws, pretty boy, I don't know.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[… Got it.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Was that all?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[What sort of case should I be presenting, or would that be cheating the test?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[That would be cheating.]

Permalink Mark Unread

"Apparently I am to state my case to leave this room if we want to be able to do that, knowing what she's looking for would be cheating, and she wasn't going to let me even do that except I can telepathy conversations to other people as necessary."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...state your case? Why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Because people are probably going to try rushing to go fetch people out of – whatever happened – and so that's why they locked the doors."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Couldn't they have just locked the door outside?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I – was going to suggest reasons they couldn't have but should probably just ask her –"

He does so.

Permalink Mark Unread

[I'll let you answer your own question again.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[What purpose does that serve?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Well, if you come up with a different answer than mine then I'll know to be even more paranoid in the future.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[… Because you think we will all team up and manage to overpower you and hence escape?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Oh no, we can overpower all of you easily.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[… You expect us to, what, sneak around and break through the outer door?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Not particularly, but it's a possibility.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[And it's enough of a possibility you locked us in individual rooms?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Nope.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[I'm not sure of your reasoning then.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[It costs time and resources to keep an eye on all of you, time and resources which I do have but do not want to spend.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[… And making a good case that we'd not be inconvenient is enough for you to decide we're not much of a risk?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Yes.]

Permalink Mark Unread

"She doesn't want to spend extra effort policing us, apparently, and locking us away is a good way to reduce that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I suppose that makes sense."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And a manual check presumably constitutes low enough effort for enough gain she's willing to let us out. So. Arguments for why we're safe?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...you helped calm everyone down, you've been the liaison all this time and people can vouch for you, I don't know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure that's going to convince her, though, since she presumably already knows all that." Shrug. "It would be nice if I could communicate truth values for things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah." Sigh.

Permalink Mark Unread

"… Could be a bit weird depending on how it was done, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How what was done?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Truth communication."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, yeah. ...could be downright creepy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very creepy." Sigh. "I'll try those arguments, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

[Hi, me again.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Quelle surprise.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[C'est choquant, n'est-ce pas. Anyway, yes, first argument is that I've been keeping people together and helping to organize all this.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Mmhm.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[And being liaison. And keeping people calm. And being a leader.] Apparently. [Et cetera.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Interesting facts. Have more of those for people in other rooms to share?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[I haven't yet asked them.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Then I suppose that should be a thing for you to do.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[While you figure whether my answer was sufficient, or?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Oh I won't tell you which answers are sufficient until I've heard all of them.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[This seems like a twisted game to play.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[It's not a game, it's consistent enforcement of an agreement. I said I'd let you go conditional on you extending the same opportunity to everyone else, so it wouldn't be fair of me to do it before then.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[That doesn't necessarily entail hearing all of them before you consider which count.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Fair enough. Yours counts.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Would you prefer to hear the others' in any particular order or should I just… go by room…?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Sure, that works.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Sure.]

Okay, person in next room – he explains the situation in case they haven't actually checked the door.

Permalink Mark Unread

...they would like to get out, yes, thank you.

Permalink Mark Unread

Right, right, he just – can they convincingly tell him they are not planning to do anything reckless, recall what they spoke about earlier?

Permalink Mark Unread

Some of them can! Not all.

Permalink Mark Unread

… Do they understand why it might be problematic to have them attempt to leave and do something reckless?

Permalink Mark Unread

Some of them do! Not all.

Permalink Mark Unread

Would they mind if he tried explaining it to them?

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure why not.

Permalink Mark Unread

He tries! They have quite a bit of information about the state of affairs of the alliance, they have understanding of the individuals here, they could be useful as hostages if they get caught or so as to give information about how to get the rest of them to defect…

Permalink Mark Unread

Grumble grumble but what about their friends and family.

Permalink Mark Unread

… They're important, obviously, it's not a good solution, but – what about the rest of them? What about – everyone under his regime?

Permalink Mark Unread

People vary in how much they care.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eugh.

Well he tries to forward recommendations for the people who seemed sincere and who he generally trusts to be sensible on this matter. Some of them have provided proper arguments and reasoning for why they should be allowed out (and also got Anthony to check for character references from other people, if that helps).

Permalink Mark Unread

She argues about some of them.

Permalink Mark Unread

He argues back where he disagrees with her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually she reaches a conclusion.

There is a click from their door.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We are presumably let out!" says Anthony, to Dayo.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yay! ...why did we want to get out again?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"So we could go talk to them and maybe figure out what they're up to? I guess?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can do that telepathically."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right, but you might get more out of it by talking to them directly or something?" He shrugs. "That was last we were talking about, I think, is all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah fair enough. Wanna go there?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why not." Pause. "Okay, so why not is that we could keep cuddling for a bit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep. That is a very good reason why not."

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuggle.

"But we will probably want to eventually."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Eventually is not now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You may note I am entangled."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very entangled."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Such a shame."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just so terrible."

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuggle!

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuggle indeed!

"… Okay so I am kinda curious what they're up to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes fine we can go."

Permalink Mark Unread

This means disentangling! Anthony does that and gets up.

Permalink Mark Unread

He gets up, too, and follows.

Permalink Mark Unread

Out the door! He pokes around to see if he can figure out where anyone is – any clusters of people nearby?

Permalink Mark Unread

Not in line-of-sight, just an empty corridor. Most but not all of the rooms are occupied. He can also sense a few clusters of people that-a-way.

Permalink Mark Unread

Clusters of people-ward ho!

Permalink Mark Unread

The closest one is behind a locked and guarded door.

Permalink Mark Unread

"… I'm gonna assume we can't go in there?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, no, not normally."

Permalink Mark Unread

"… I don't even know where there is or why I'd not be allowed in."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then it shouldn't be much of a problem not to go in, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was wondering why the 'normally'."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Because sometimes you can!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seemed like a weird way to phrase it," he shrugs.

Anyway: next group?

Permalink Mark Unread

Bunch of people in a gym.

Permalink Mark Unread

Do any of them look not so busy?

Permalink Mark Unread

They're variously talking or exercising but don't look particularly busy.

Permalink Mark Unread

"… Do we go talk to them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why not."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What about? General living standards?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's not how conversation works," he says, grinning.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony snorts. "Well no but we can steer it to something useful if we want?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Absolutely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So what sort of thing are we steering toward, then – general living standards, gossip on the boss, if there have been large recent announcements…?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I dunno, I'm kinda generally curious enough that I could take whatever."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug.

Over to the people!

Permalink Mark Unread

"—hello. Are you with the new batch?" asks a tall, muscular woman.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am! Anthony." He smiles, only faking a little, then indicates to his side. "This is Dayo."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hiyo," Dayo greets her.

"Uh, hi. Weren't you supposed to be locked or something?" she asks.

"No, boss let a bunch of them go, the ones she thought wouldn't make trouble," some guy explains.

"And how can she tell?" she wonders.

"One of 'em has telepathy he can share or something like that," he shrugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony puts up a hand. "That would be me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, huh. Nice power you got," guy says. "I'm Kel."

    "Beth."

"Marcus," says a guy who hasn't said anything so far.

Everyone else in the gym is far enough away to not be in this conversation.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anthony," he repeats. "We only just got out, were looking for people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"People? What sorta people?" asks Beth.

"Just, people in general," says Dayo. "To talk, get to know the place and stuff."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Get a feel for how it might be different from our previous lodgings, you know…"

Permalink Mark Unread

Kel laughs. "Uh huh. Just a teeny bit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hopefully more in some ways than others."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What was it even like there?" Marcus wonders.

Permalink Mark Unread

"… Uh. Regimented, I guess?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you for the one-word summary," says Beth, rolling her eyes a bit.

"It's not like they've been here long enough to compare properly," Marcus counters reasonably.

She shrugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know – there was a pretense that everything was okay, but it wasn't very… solid?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"So just like everywhere else. Welcome to the last hundred years."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And what's it like here for comparison?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, no one pretends everything's okay so it's pretty much all crappy," Beth says.

"Great way to welcome the new people," sighs Marcus.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, it wasn't all wonderful at the old place either."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's exaggerating," he explains. "It's not really that bad here. It's—tense, often. But not that bad."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's – good, I guess?" responds Anthony. "I have a feeling it's gonna get more tense. New people and all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe. Definitely if Beth's their first introduction."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I just mean, with people – probably not being very trusting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm, I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not that I know the typical levels of trusting around here, or anything, but – yeah." Shrug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You kinda have to trust people, here. It's—been a problem, with your extraction mission, but. Can't get anything done otherwise."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's… yeah. I don't know how much the – general group of you – knows about it all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There aren't a whole lotta secrets?" says Kel. "Like, 's part of the point, is not much hierarchy, so's we're all in this together. We can all question the boss lady and she'll hear us—and give us a whoopin' if we waste her time but so it goes."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "What are the secret cabinet meetings or whatever for then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They're not secret from us, you're just new," says Marcus.

"And boss lady couldn't very well do a meeting with literally ev'ryone, she picks the most important," explains Kel.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That makes sense, I just wasn't clear on that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She probably likes you, though, if she let people out of their rooms because of you," Marcus muses.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I helped to arrange things."

Permalink Mark Unread

    "And there's why."

Dayo looks at him a bit enamouredly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony notices and grins back.

"Doesn't seem to get me an in on the local communication, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

Beth snorts. "You're not all that."

"Yet," adds Marcus. "Why'd you help?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"… What, help get people out?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

Pause. "It seemed like the right thing to do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Beth snorts. "Yeah but lots of things are and that doesn't mean people do them."

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs. "I'm pretty sure that's why I did it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, good on ya," says Kel. "You should settle down and stuff, I'm sure boss lady will want to talk to ya soon enough."

"Wonder what the hell she's thinking, locking everyone up right after that, it'll get them to hate her," says Marcus.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We already found our room," he responds, raising an eyebrow.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right, I was talkin' about gettin' to know the place and people and making yourself comfortable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"… Don't suppose you'd want to give us a tour? – Maybe after you're done with the gym?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"This lazy ass doesn't actually do anything around here," says Beth, shoving Kel in their direction.

He snorts and says, "Sure, I can give you a tour."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks," responds Anthony. "So – you're Kel?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right in one. And you're Anthony."

Permalink Mark Unread

He smirks. "And, shockingly, this is still Dayo."

Permalink Mark Unread

He waves.

Kel snorts. "Come on, I'll show you the place."

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony starts to follow!

"So what is there to do around here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, you know. It's a big compound, I'm sure there's lots of stuff to do. What do you like to do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"… I'm kinda coming up blank here." He pauses. "Uh. Talk to people? … Sometimes cook?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"So exciting. Ooh, I bet I know a place I can show you. But shh, it's a secret."

Permalink Mark Unread

"– Uh, okay…?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Come on." He starts leading the way out and down the corridor.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony follows!

Permalink Mark Unread

As does Dayo!

Through a few doors and down some stairs and more corridors and they reach a boiler room but there's a door there leading to more stairs...

Permalink Mark Unread

"… Weird route."

Follow!

Permalink Mark Unread

More stairs!

...many more stairs. The wall becomes stone, the illumination becomes torches, and they reach something that looks like an old cell.

"I'm suddenly not so sure I want to be here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"… I don't suppose you could explain the secret before we get there?"

    "Then what's the fun?"

Dayo raises an eyebrow.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony blinks. "… That it seems less like we just met you and you're dragging us into some weird prisonlike system?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh fine. So there's this... old myth thing, except maybe it's not really a myth? Who knows. About the founder."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh huh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"So you know how there's magic protecting this place? People working for the Leader can't find us. The Leader himself can't even think about us for too long, they say. But the founder died and left the source of his magic here. Except no one can get to it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"… What's up with it, does it repel people somehow?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, no, there are deadly traps everywhere."

"...and you brought us here."

    "Well not that deadly."

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony stops. "Just what – slightly deadly?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's deadly without prompt medical attention and anyway I'm not saying you should, like. Go through the place. Come on, I just wanna show you, it's super cool, you'll see."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So we are not going through the deadly traps?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well not if you don't want to?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would rather not put myself at added risk of death right now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, whatever. Let's go?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony motions for him to lead the way.

Permalink Mark Unread

On they go.

...eventually they notice that although the lighting has not changed there are no longer torches anywhere to actually emit the light.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony decides to comment on this.

"– How magical is this whole place, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh very. Every third thing's magical."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It doesn't have any… weird effects?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's no – people mysteriously catching fire, hallucinating, or… other bad things…?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What no why would that happen."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have no idea what magic is around here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No it's more like—automatic doors or heating or noise-cancellation or people being magically likely to run into you when you need them and they're free..."

"...that last one sounds kinda creepy."

Shrug. "It is what it is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think all of those sound kinda creepy, actually."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Really? Why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"… I hesitate to say unnatural but basically that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...well so's your telepathy thing then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"… Yeah but I know how that works. So it's less creepy, at least for me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"'S just what it is," he shrugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

… Anthony also shrugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Onwards!

Permalink Mark Unread

Step by step they make their way in.

Permalink Mark Unread

Magically illuminated stone passages and arches, Kel turns this way and that in various bifurcations until they eventually reach a huge antechamber with an enormous stone door covered with indecipherable carvings. No handle to speak of.

Permalink Mark Unread

"… Is this one of the deadly traps?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, this is one of the puzzly traps."

"...puzzly."

"It's not all deadly, it's more, like, puzzles, you know. Which you have to solve."

"Huh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And does it do – trappy things – if you do it wrong? Or is it just a puzzle blocking the way further in?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just a puzzle but we've solved this one a while ago actually."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wanna give it a shot?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"… I can try?" He looks over at Dayo. "Not really sure… where to start…"

Permalink Mark Unread

Dayo's already staring intently at the door.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ookay.

Anthony will do that also, for a brief period.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dayo tries... gently pushing it. No give. "Had to give it a shot," he shrugs.

Kel laughs. "It's not that easy."

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony looks for some movable component, some grooves in the wall that might outline something he can shift.

Permalink Mark Unread

There aren't any, really. Just bunches of strange carvings on a wood panel shaped like a door embedded on the wall.

Permalink Mark Unread

Doesn't react if he pokes any of the carvings?

Permalink Mark Unread

They glow where he touches them.

"Ooh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not seeing a pattern to the symbols…" he says.

He tries poking some more, seeing if they all glow on touch or if it's a limited subset.

Permalink Mark Unread

Seems like it's all of them.

Permalink Mark Unread

All the same color, all responding about as quickly as each other? No other noticeable signs, like heat?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, yes, no.

Permalink Mark Unread

He pulls a face. "Brute force is gonna take a heck of a long time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is, yeah. I'm trying to guess a pattern here, like... My thinking is that there must be something hidden in the carvings, some drawing of some sort, and if we light it up right then it'll do things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmm."

Anthony steps back and surveys it, trying to look for some markings that match up.

Permalink Mark Unread

There are a lot of things that could potentially match up! Lots of carved lines in straights and curves intersecting each other forming patterns.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not seeing anything obvious," he says. "Lots of possible matches."

How long do the symbols glow for? Any pattern to how long they glow for, some suggestion a particular pattern might work better than others?

Permalink Mark Unread

For about a second and a half except this place over here was two seconds...

Permalink Mark Unread

"Longer delay on this one," he comments.

If he taps that and some of the ones around it do they vary in delay?

Permalink Mark Unread

...one of them does.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe we should be looking for the longest lasting pattern since it looks like the time varies –" He demonstrates, if it wasn't clear before.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh okay so if we try this..." And he starts touching one carving after the other, only the ones known to be longer-lasting. Which causes them to last even longer!

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony helps try to continue the pattern.

Permalink Mark Unread

And soon enough the shape of a seven-pointed star, previously obscured by the squiggles and interesting carvings, becomes visible in light, and the door starts sliding open noisily.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Woo!" says Anthony, apparently sincerely.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why is it a star?" Dayo asks. Kel shrugs.

The revealed passage, in contrast with the previous corridors, is dark—supernaturally so—but broad, and the way their breathing and voices echoes suggests a rather cavernous space up ahead. "Hold on," says Kel, and turns his phone's lantern on. The broadness is misleading: the path they can actually walk on is only wide enough for a single person, and the space to either side of it consists of a pit deep enough that the bottom isn't visible. "The deadly starts here," Kel adds.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony hesitates.

"How much of the deadly do you have traced out? Or – is there anything interesting, in the parts we can get to relatively safely?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The interesting parts there is the deadliness itself. It gets pretty creative. We've mapped out a ways farther into it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And," he starts, still hesitating some, "… it's relatively safe since you know where the deadliness is?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep."

Permalink Mark Unread

He pulls a bit of a face, weighing it up.

"What do you think?" he asks, turning to Dayo.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Have you met me? I'm all for it let's go."

    Kel grins.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony hesitates some more, but only momentarily, before he makes up his mind.

He nods and continues forward.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Follow me closely," Kel says. "The bottomless pit isn't instantly deadly but try not to fall."

There is in fact enough space that they don't need to really balance—so long as they're not the type to suffer from vertigo when looking at incredibly deep and menacing and dark falls.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony peers over the edge, carefully. The sight seems to disagree with him, making him pull back and keep his eyes instead on the path ahead.

Permalink Mark Unread

"And maybe don't look over the edge if you're at all prone to vertigo," he adds cheerfully.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, um." He looks a bit queasy. "Figured that out."

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony probably cannot see Kel's smirk.

Onwards!

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony's careful to keep his eyes on the path ahead after that. He considers looking to Dayo for reassurance, but chooses not to, not wanting to stop or risk losing his balance.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's a good choice: the path gets narrower as they go on. Not indefinitely, but noticeably.

"Careful now," Kel says. "It'll fork up ahead."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "Which way will we go?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, changes each time, you have to learn to get a feel for it."

"A 'feel'?"

    "You'll see what I mean."

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony tries to puzzle that over as they get closer.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually they do reach a three-way fork.

"Stop," Kel says. "Breathe. See if you can feel it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony stops and looks over at Kel to confirm he's not doing anything stupid, but then turns back to the fork and takes a breath.

Permalink Mark Unread

He can feel exactly nothing.

Permalink Mark Unread

… If he waits a minute?

Permalink Mark Unread

It doesn't take a minute. There's... something like colour, if he could smell colour, or something like touch, if he could see touch.

Permalink Mark Unread

He opens his mouth to talk, then frowns at the feeling's sudden absence.

"That was weird."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know, right? And you forget it if you defect, or so I'm told."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Defect – how do you mean?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Like, switch sides, become pals with the evil dude, all that. When people turn traitor they can't come here anymore."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh." He pauses. "If it has this protection… why all the other things?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Guy was paranoid? The protection came after?" He shrugs. "Dunno."

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony nods, puzzling it over.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Also there were people who turned traitors and fucked up your rescue, right, 's not like it's foolproof, just 'cause they won't come back here doesn't mean they haven't caused problems."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Has everyone been here, then – past this fork?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not everyone, but lots of people yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "Should I wait for the feeling to come back, then, direct us forwards?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure. Or your boyfriend can."

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony will try to do it himself. (If boyfriend succeeds before him, he'll probably get another chance later.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Feeling!

Permalink Mark Unread

He almost starts in that direction – then stops himself, as it occurs to him just where he is, and what he's just been through.

To Dayo: [I'm having… second thoughts about here.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Hmm? Here where?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Here, this… magical puzzle. It just… strikes me as a bad idea, doing this.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Oh, yeah, it's a terrible idea, I'm just throwing myself at everything to stall the grief until Chief Garland has the decency to talk to us like real people instead of a gaggle of sheep she has to herd,] he says, very cheerful.

Permalink Mark Unread

Deep breath. [I think we should get back. I haven't heard from anyone in a while, we should make sure things are okay.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[You're the boss, sweetheart.]

Permalink Mark Unread

He mentally rolls his eyes, then stands up.

"I think we should be getting back now," he says to Kel.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw, what, we've just gotten here!"

"We can feel the thing, right, so we're not traitors, and also we're getting antsy about our friends."

    "...I guess. Bah, fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

Anthony smiles, slightly forced. "Hopefully nothing has happened while we've been down here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Up we go," Dayo agrees cheerfully. And back up they are led.

Permalink Mark Unread

Whereupon someone contacts Anthony!

"… Apparently people have been trying to talk to me, while we've been down there?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Dayo raises an eyebrow in Kel's direction.

"—oh, right, yeah, the cave's, like, extra unfindable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And we all are too, when we're in it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, stuff doesn't work through it.—well radio and talking n' stuff does but not magic and thinking."

"Thinking?"

"Hard to think about the cave when you're outside it if you're not with us."

"Is it hard to think about the outside if you're inside and not with us?"

    "—huh, guess it might be."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I… have never heard of anything doing this before." He looks disturbed. [My telepathy is just… so crippled in there…]

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lotsa special stuff here," Kel agrees.

[We could still talk to each other...] But he gets where Anthony is coming from, yeah.
