some people go to work at night
natsume makes more friends
Permalink Mark Unread

The thing is, she still doesn't have a lot of friends. Definitely not ones that are around. Sayuri is... yeah. But she's not local. And Nanami is... a lot. And also not human. Which is fine, but also means she has her own thing going on a lot of the time.

So one evening before dinner, it's just Tsubaki and Nyanko-sensei strolling down the riverside.

Permalink Mark Unread

Which is when she hears some tiny youkai muttering something about an odd human, from the approximate direction of 'her feet.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"An odd human?"

Permalink Mark Unread

The youkai startle at her voice and scurry off!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Worth poking around, do you think?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Might as well. Not doing anything else."

Permalink Mark Unread

Onwards, then!

Permalink Mark Unread

They fairly quickly stumble on a cleared bit of grass, with a circle with strange symbols drawn in it in the dirt.

Permalink Mark Unread

Recognizable symbols at all?

Permalink Mark Unread

...Hrm, possibly spiritually significant? Nyanko isn't exactly classically educated.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsubaki will take some notes for the next time she meets with Sayuri.

Any tracks or disturbances in the vicinity?

Permalink Mark Unread

Some scuffed dirt, maybe, going in a specific direction.

Permalink Mark Unread

Seems worth checking.

Permalink Mark Unread

It doesn't take too long for them to come across a girl about Natsume's age, using a long stick to draw details in a circle in the dirt. She's vaguely familiar.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She startles. "Natsume - ?" And then her eyes go wide and she clasps her hand over her mouth - "I'm sorry!"

And she turns to run off.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wh- "Wait!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She pauses, briefly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't I- know you from school? Why are you drawing these circles?"

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Nothing! No reason."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you... in trouble?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She tenses a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Deep breath. "I can help. If you are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Um. What kind of trouble are you in? I... know some people?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She looks vaguely skeptical, and she doesn't respond right away.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is it supernatural?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Longer hesitation!

" - Why are you asking that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It, um. Happens sometimes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...And what if it is?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know some people. Like that." Oh, talking is terrible. Why does she do it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...These circles let me see ayakushi. But one day, almost a year ago, an evil spirit wandered into my circle. It cursed me, said that if I could catch it within the next year, it would spare my life. If not, it would kill me and the last thirteen people whose names I'd called."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. Okay."

"What did it look like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Big and dark. It had two white eyes like glowing holes in a shadowy outline."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsubaki nudges Nyanko-sensei with her foot.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't recognize the description... But that's a harsh wager. Ayakashi with that much malevolence are rare, and others might have fallen afoul of it..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Taki squints. "Did your cat just talk?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She does that. Um. Would you prefer not to know her name, considering?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though it's unclear if nicknames will have the same effect... Best not to risk it."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll see if anyone know about this ayakashi."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll keep looking my way, I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We should set a place to meet later."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My house? My parents are out of town."

Permalink Mark Unread

That works.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll give the address and directions, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meet tomorrow? Hopefully she'll have something to start...

Permalink Mark Unread

Works for her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good luck until then, Taki-san.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Same to you."

Permalink Mark Unread

As they part ways, Tsubaki heaves a sigh of relief.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hm?

Permalink Mark Unread

"Talking to new people is hard, Nyanko-sensei."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You did very well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would have been harder if she'd run off, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We got lucky, I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or skilled."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe. Who do you think we should call, speaking of?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nanami, to start. And the C-listers might know something - I can handle interrogating them and all of the low-rank spirits."

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay good Nyanko didn't say Sayuri. Tsubaki does not think she would be helpful in this situation.

"Right. Hopefully someone knows something. Or has seen it themselves."

Permalink Mark Unread

To work, then?

Permalink Mark Unread

They'll do what they can this evening.

Permalink Mark Unread

Split up, or stick together?

Permalink Mark Unread

Together for now, if they need to cover more ground tomorrow they can split.

Permalink Mark Unread

Works for her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then to work.

Permalink Mark Unread

Unfortunately, they don't find much if anything before it's time for Tsubaki to return home for the night.

Permalink Mark Unread

It would have been nice, but that was kind of a long shot. She can call Nanami tomorrow.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nyanko will keep guard overnight.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thanks, sensei.

Permalink Mark Unread

Heh. She is the best sensei, isn't she.

Permalink Mark Unread

No competition among those of Tsubaki's personal acquaintance, certainly.

Permalink Mark Unread

She has every confidence the trend will continue.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good night, sensei.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll see her brat in the morning.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsubaki calls Nanami the next morning after breakfast, timing it so that her appearance and

Permalink Mark Unread

excited cry of "TSUBAKI-CHAAAAAAAAAN" and ensuing tackle-hug

Permalink Mark Unread

happens around a corner where no one is likely to see her suddenly stumble for seemingly no reason.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No hugs for me? I'm hurt."

Permalink Mark Unread

She gives Tsubaki one more nuzzle then swoops down upon Nyanko. "Oh no! I'll have to kiss the kitty all better!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nuzzle purr!

Permalink Mark Unread

Soft kitty fluffy kitty happy kitty yay!

Permalink Mark Unread

Softest fluffiest happiest kitty!

Permalink Mark Unread

Yay!

"Soooooo... why did you call me today? I love it when you do, but you always want something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Natsume's been cursed, something that spread from someone else. We need to find the youkai that laid the original curse."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Again? Girl, you need to be careful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was someone else who was originally cursed. We have to help her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right. Hit me with the details."

Permalink Mark Unread

She gives them. "I don't recognize the spirit, nor does anyone we spoke to - it's elusive, whatever it is. And it might react poorly to us poking around."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Too bad for it, then. I won't let it harm my precious Tsubaki-chan."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would be one way to flush it out, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If we really needed subtle I would have called someone else."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can be subtle!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"But you like threatening to eat people more."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A feline kind of subtle."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You two can work on it while I'm at school, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Will do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Have fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Stay strong until we see each other again, Tsubaki-chan!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"And don't do anything I wouldn't!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, sensei." Tsubaki will head off for class.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Nyanko and Nanami off to hunt.

"She's a very good student," Nyanko comments as they start.

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's soooo smart," Nanami mimes a swoon. "Just like Reiko-chan. Well, Reiko-chan was much wickeder with it. Tsubaki-chan's just a good girl."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A smart student matches a smart teacher well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very true, kitty."

Permalink Mark Unread

So off to poke around more?

Permalink Mark Unread

See what they can find in the realm of the dark and spooky.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not much, but it's enough to distract them - they won't be able to immediately wait for Natsume when she leaves school.

Permalink Mark Unread

Surely they'll catch up.

Permalink Mark Unread

Though they should probably get moving...

Permalink Mark Unread

Back to the lovely Tsubaki-chan! Without whose presence every moment is a tragedy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Those tragedies will likely continue, since Tsubaki isn't there when they finally make it to the school.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her classmate is, though, and she looks somewhere between confused and worried.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wait she should be here why isn't she here?

Permalink Mark Unread

"Natsume?!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Tōru looks over! She starts to say something, then bites her lip and hurries over.

Permalink Mark Unread

This girl probably can't see Nanami. "Where's Tsubaki-chan?" she asks anyway.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, she doesn't seem to have heard - though she does pull up short and glance around.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Helloooooo?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Where's Natsume?" Nyanko asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

" - She vanished. There was a lot of wind." Probably they should go somewhere not around other students to talk?

Permalink Mark Unread

Well that's not good.

Permalink Mark Unread

Once they're in private: "You can't see my companion, can you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She shakes her head. "I'm fast at those circles now, though, so I can draw one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds good to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

Once Nyanko relays that, she gets to work. Soon enough, there's a decent sized circle in front of her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nanami hops in, with a flashy little twirl.

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles. "Hello."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hellooooo. So. Tsubaki-chan."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was heading over to join her when this big wind started up - I had to close my eyes - and when it died down, she wasn't there."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nanami narrows her eyes. "A kidnapping."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "That was my thought."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That girl is too attractive for her own good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm worried it was because of her helping me..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's possible - but that'd mean the spirit was actively monitoring you, and was stealthy enough to get past me. Natsume gets targeted fairly often though for... Unrelated reasons."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll need to go back to the scene to look for traces."

Permalink Mark Unread

It's in view of the school, so Taki doesn't want to act too weird - but Nanami and Nyanko could look.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leave it to the professionals.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll let them get to work.

Permalink Mark Unread

So what traces has this kidnapping left?

Permalink Mark Unread

Nyanko shifts into her great cat form, and starts sniffing the ground. "Hmmm... It's faint, but there's definitely a malevolent power here - and it feels like the one that cursed Taki and Natsume."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Might have gone after Tsubaki-chan so she can't help Taki."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "Or their attention was drawn to the Book of Friends..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Either way, we need to catch up."

Permalink Mark Unread

Serious nod. "I've got a heading."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'll need to be the one to let Taki know. Then we should go."

Permalink Mark Unread

She turns back into her Lucky Cat form and heads over.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's ready to accompany them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Now to the hunt.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elsewhere, Tsubaki is-

Well. It's dark. And someone's tied a rope to her leg. So, 'in trouble' sounds about right.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's rough, slightly damp rock under her, and a distant echoey drip - probably yet another cave. Malevolent ayakushi sure seem to like their caves.

There's also a dark miasma in the air, a sense of great spiritual power.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah. All right.

She'll start by trying to get loose here...

Permalink Mark Unread

...Something seems to be looming over her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

She punches upwards into the darkness.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a gust of air and a deep laugh as whatever it was dodges her blow. (They're usually not that intelligent.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Must be a big one, then. Not great.
