the daughters of gleam and elathea have some growing pains
Permalink Mark Unread

Sending her twin to the Moon had been a perfect idea.

Layla doesn't like it when her perfect ideas go wrong. It makes her sulky, though she doesn't like sulking because sulking is something little kids do, and Layla's ten and therefore reasonably displeased.

Their parents close the door. The only light in the room's a thin silver of moonlight that makes it past their curtains, now, and Layla's supposed to be going back to sleep (though technically mama said 'at some point,' not 'right now,' so).

Which means sitting up and scootching over to the pillar at the head of the bed, and then pulling herself up until she's able to see over Samira's rail, is perfectly within bounds.

"What happened?" she whispers, shifting to the side a bit so she's more on the tiger perch. It's easier to stand on.

Permalink Mark Unread

Samira sits up, hugging one of her pillows.

"It started out okay. But then I got to the city, and I was trying to sneak around, and I almost got caught by some people who would've eaten me and I was scared and hiding and. Um."

"I guess I was trying pretty hard because I- exalted? And then Lady Luna was there and she brought me home."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh."

"'m sorry you almost got eaten."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Didn't, though. So it's okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

"Did exalting feel weird?" She's staring at Samira's caste mark, a little, and at the swirl of Essence around her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. A bit like... taking a deep breath after being underwater for almost too long."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh." She pokes Samira's caste mark.

Permalink Mark Unread

She pokes Samira in the forehead.

"Hey."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You've got a thing, here." She waves her hand through it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Get a mirror, I wanna see."

Permalink Mark Unread

She hops down off the perch and scampers into their bathroom, coming back with a hand mirror and a lamp she's turned to the lowest glow it'll do. She has to go the long way through the jungle gym to get to the top bunk with her hands full, but then it's easier to drop into the bed next to Samira and pass her the mirror while Layla holds the lamp between them.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh."

"Mom's glows. Wonder why mine doesn't..." She frowns in concentration for a moment, and the mark brightens to cast more light than the lamp. "Ah! Um..." She wrinkles her brow and a moment later the circular sign vanishes entirely.

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle (and blink to get her night vision back). "Probably 'cause you're sneaky. Mom's super not sneaky."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah." Giggle. "She's shiny."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bet my mark's gonna be the shiniest."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You are very shiny."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lean. "I'm bold."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Forthright."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know what I want."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you're willing to go after it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

"Don't like that it got you in trouble this time, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Sometimes that happens."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Doesn't mean I can't try to avoid it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't blame you. For what happened."

Permalink Mark Unread

She throws an arm around Samira's shoulder. "You're a good sister. But we're a team, and if my ideas are bad, they need to get less bad, so the team's better."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lean. "Yeah. We'll be the best team."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod!

...And yawn.

She's been staying up, waiting for Samira to return. It's catching up to her a little.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Time for bed?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess."

She doesn't really want to go back to her own bunk, though. "I wanna stay up here, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's room."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin! She sets the lamp on a ledge a bit above their heads and turns it off, before laying down.

Snuggle time!

Permalink Mark Unread

Makes the day feel better.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah! And makes getting up in the morning to face the lecture they're definitely gonna get less of a pain.

It's still a pain, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, well, some things you just gotta do.

Permalink Mark Unread

Uh huh.

"You got lectured already, so, I can do most of this one..." she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks, sis."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anytime." Shoulder bump. Then: to breakfast!

Permalink Mark Unread

Breakfast.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elathea will give them until after they've eaten before requesting the attention of both girls.

Permalink Mark Unread

She gives it, hands folded down on her lap.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We need to talk about last night, as I'm sure the both of you are well aware. Though thankfully no one was hurt, things could easily have gone very, very wrong. The warnings we give you as your parents are not because we like to hear ourselves speak, we are trying to protect you using the wisdom of our experience."

Permalink Mark Unread

...Sulk.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Samira. You know the wyld is dangerous. Why did you go?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...To help Layla."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Layla. Why did you send your sister?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She gets to do stuff I don't. And I liked hearing about all her stories, but the wyld sounds scary, and I don't think I'd be good at it. But I really, really wanna go to the moon, and Samira could get there okay, we thought, and then she could steal something that'd let me go safely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why did you not talk to us before doing this?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"'Cause Samira asked mama, and mama said she thinks we're not ready. But mama's always super cautious."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mama is trying to protect you. You know this, yes?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. But sometimes she tries too hard."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She judged the danger correctly in this case, did she not?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your sister looks to you for direction. It is your responsibility to guide her well. You need to think before sending her out, about dangers, about consequences, about what tools or resources you have to help her. To know what you're getting her into."

"She came back this time. But you will not always be so lucky."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm saying this because you need to hear it, not to make you feel bad. We love you, and we don't want you to make a mistake you'll regret."

Permalink Mark Unread

Her face scrunches up. "I know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right. Now, your mama and I thing it best if you spend some time with her, learning the sort of things Samira's been."

Permalink Mark Unread

Slow nod. "Where will Samira be?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Samira will be with me for a little while."

Permalink Mark Unread

She glances at her twin. "Is that okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"'Kay." To her mom: "I'm gonna still get to learn sorcery though, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll see about continuing those lessons afterwards."

Permalink Mark Unread

Pout. "That's not fair."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Here is another type of lesson, then: few things in life are fair and sometimes, the unfairness is a consequence of your own actions."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hrmph. "I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Believe it, young lady."

Permalink Mark Unread

Siiiiigh.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elathea claps her hands together.

"That's all the serious business for now, though. The two of you are released."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

Hugs?

Permalink Mark Unread

Hugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hugs!

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry I almost got Samira hurt."

Permalink Mark Unread

Pet. "Fortunately, you have a chance to learn, now," she says, gently. "Just like tumbling off a branch."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile. "Don't do that much anymore."

Permalink Mark Unread

Poke. "You took a tumble two days ago, love."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A graceful descent."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Onto your butt."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm pretty sure you hadn't meant to do it before you started falling."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I did once I started! I would've fallen on my face if I kept going all the way." She pauses, then - "Like I used to..."

She scrunches up her face. Then, to her parents, slowly: "So... Being smart about what I tell Samira to do is like that? Like - learning how to fall less, but also how to not get hurt when I do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A bit like that, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...'Kay."

"I'll work hard on it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure you will."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm a fast learner."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, you are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We both are."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hee!

With breakfast and lecture over, the twins can head out to run around for a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah. Getting lectured was... Okay, she learned some stuff, but it wasn't fun, and chasing her sister around is.

Can her sister run and jump any better?

Permalink Mark Unread

Turns out... yeah. She can.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool!" Layla giggles. "I'm going to have to figure out some way to beat you in races now...:

Permalink Mark Unread

"Find new ways to cheat?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's only cheating if there's formal rules you get caught breaking."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So you're saying I should make some rules."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, the point of rules is to make things equal..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you say so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So they'd have to give us an equal chance to win."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe I just have to go farther than you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or accept a handicap."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We might have to test out which rules work best."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do experiments."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah!" She flops on her back. "Though I'd rather get my Exaltation sooner... You and Micqui already got yours. But our parents would be super mad I bet if I went out looking for a chance."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Plus I don't think you can get exalted on purpose."

Permalink Mark Unread

Huff. "Maybe one of our parents would know..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or Micqui."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, and she might be more likely to tell us, too..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wanna go find her now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure." Samira is always up for finding Micqui.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey squirts," she says when they find her. "Heard you had an adventure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's one word for it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug?

Permalink Mark Unread

Micqui hug!

Permalink Mark Unread

She pats her sister's back. "You came out okay, though?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seems like it. Survived the lectures, anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So you two already know what you did wrong?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I told Samira to go somewhere dangerous without thinking it through."

Permalink Mark Unread

She pulls Layla into the hug, too. "You didn't ask for help," she corrects, "And no one went with Samira."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thought I could do it without help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're sisters. That means none of us go alone."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll remember that."

Permalink Mark Unread

Squeeze. "That goes for you, too, Layla. We're a team."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "Then it goes for you - no more running off without us for months and months. And we'll help with your stuff."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a deal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A good deal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Having you two watching my back sounds wonderful."

A smile, then - "We'll also be with you for learning your powers, Samira."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think mom's going to help with those too."

Permalink Mark Unread

She ruffles Samira's hair. "Doesn't mean we can't. It'll give Layla a chance to practice being bossy, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

She sticks her tongue out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Samira giggles. "She doesn't need to practice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm a natural leader."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Natural bossypants."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you like being told what to do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm good at making things happen."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then I'm good at deciding what needs to happen."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good to know you agree with me."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shoulder bump.

Permalink Mark Unread

Laugh and shoulder bump back.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So what are we doing now, leaderpants?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's go see what you can do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Micqui's happy to help, too - and she has some ideas for fun things to test...

Permalink Mark Unread

(Samira is maybe showing off a little.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She has every right to.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Does Samira want to try fighting another Exalt, now?

Permalink Mark Unread

As long as that Exalt is Micqui.

Permalink Mark Unread

That was her plan.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then let's go.

Permalink Mark Unread

Micqui is hardly a combat specialist, nor as experienced as their parents - but she's been going at this longer than Samira, which gives her an edge.

Permalink Mark Unread

She puts up a better fight than she would have yesterday-

-but yeah. This one's Micqui's to win.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's gracious in her victory, helping Samira back up. "Good fight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You too."

"You're still stronger than me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're new. That might change in time, at least in a straight fight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll work hard."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know you will."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile!

Permalink Mark Unread

Layla is pouting, a little. She's... Not sure why, but there's something heavy and unpleasant in her gut when she looks at her sisters right now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hm? "Something wrong?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...No."

Pout.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Doesn't look like no."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I dunno, okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

She huffs and looks away, crossing her arms over her chest.

Permalink Mark Unread

Something seems wrong... but she's not sure what or how to fix it.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Micqui isn't entirely sure either, but - "I'm sorry if we made you feel left out."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah that's struck a chord. Her face scrunches up a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug?

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry," she says softly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"'s'okay. You're not doing it on purpose..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't wanna do it at all."

"You're still my favorite twin."

Permalink Mark Unread

Small giggle. "You don't have any other twins, silly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would you rather be my least favorite twin?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nudge. "So long as you remember that I'm the best twin you could ever have."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Absolutely."

Permalink Mark Unread

Laugh.

"Now... Let's get working on beating up Micqui someday."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin. "Together!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Together."

Now that she's been pulled out of her funk, Layla's got ideas for that...

Permalink Mark Unread

Samira is super ready to implement those ideas.

Best sister team.

Permalink Mark Unread

All around.

Permalink Mark Unread

Micqui helps - though she focuses on implementing and gently improving Layla's ideas, being careful not to upstage her younger sister.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fun for all the sisters, until their parents call them back in.

Permalink Mark Unread

After a few weeks, during the dark moon - one night when they're out playing late, so Samira can practice being sneaky -

There's a strange woman in their garden. Samira's seen her before, of course, but - doesn't make her any less odd. She's watching them.

Permalink Mark Unread

She taps Layla on the shoulder to alert her to the visitor.

"It's Lady Luna," she whispers.

Permalink Mark Unread

She freezes a bit, eyes going wide.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello?" she calls.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Should we get mama for you...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No need. I'd wanted to talk to the two of you, actually."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh."

"What about?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nothing very specific - I want to get to know you two."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Ummm..." She looks to Layla for guidance.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Why us?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm good friends with your parents. I like seeing them, from time to time, and I like being involved in things that're important to them. And - you two have behaved interestingly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is that good?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mostly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're not gonna lecture us too?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. I figure you've had enough of that."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sigh. "Yeah..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "We're going to do better, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Always improving."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Trying to. Together."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles at her sister and takes her hand, squeezing it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Luna pulls them into more of a relaxed conversation after that - and she readily lets Layla dominate, allowing Samira to fall into the background when she wants.

Permalink Mark Unread

Samira's met Luna once, and Layla's good at talking. She answers questions when asked and tries to contribute where she can but doesn't steer the conversation.

Permalink Mark Unread

Luna bids them a good night after a little bit, explaining she needs to be in the Silver Chair soon. (And not mentioning that Layla is clearly getting tired.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bye."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bye."

"Thanks for talking to us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was my pleasure."

And she leaves.

Permalink Mark Unread

Micqui ends up taking over a lot more of - everything, over the next few years.

Their mothers increasingly aren't around, really, emotionally or sometimes even physically. Gleam's trying, but... Micqui can tell mama's stressed and having trouble.

Elathea is...

Micqui starts mourning the idea of the twins ever knowing the same mom she did within a few months of Samira Exalting. Mom might as well be on the other side of Creation, and Micqui struggles to handle training Samira herself without alienating Layla.

They manage. Micqui's sixteen, now. Past the age of responsibility, not quite at the age to found her own household - but she's been old enough to help out for a while, and plenty of people outside of the upper echelons of the Deliberative are parents at her age, and they have an entire massive estate full of potential helpers. (An estate Micqui increasingly starts running - mama's always been bad at this part, and mom's now just... Not participating at all.)

(At least the oldest retainers are too well trained to look at her with pity. And they could keep the estate going even if the entire family vanished, so... It's not too hard.)

(And as their mothers' fuses grow shorter - well. Micqui's a practical girl. The loyalty of servants can mean a lot.)

(And of course, it's only a matter of time before - before that means something.)

(Micqui doesn't even wait for the fight to start. She sees Gleam stalking off toward Elathea's workshop, buzzing with anger, and she begins to act. Her sisters - there's secret paths through existence, ones she was warned to never tell non-Sidereals about, but she doesn't fucking care and shoving two thirteen year olds through a door isn't really telling, anyways. She prays to Luna. Everyone else - she warns them, gets people clear, and then puts her own body between her mothers and the estate.)

(Luna's always going to be Micqui's favorite god, she decides, as the deity pulls through - stops the fight cold - and saves them.)

(Her mothers are... Sorry, they say. There's something different, something changed - Micqui almost dares to hope, lets the servants know the coast is clear, sets the senior retainers to straightening things out - )

Something is wrong with Exaltations.

Micqui takes the news in stride. Starts further contingency measures - realizes with a sinking feeling her Exaltation might be 'wrong' too - starts trying to figure out what the best way to put contingency decisions in Layla's hands will be.

Her mothers don't even try to attend to the household in the aftermath. Micqui handles that, too. (She wouldn't want to hand over this influence even if her mothers tried to get it back, she thinks. It's too useful.)

(Luna's initial tests of their family's Exaltations are... Stressful. Micqui doesn't like the changes in Samira, ones she'd been blind to before now - doesn't like the expressions on her little sisters' faces as Luna tests Micqui's own Exaltation.)

It's late when they finish, and Layla at least is practically vibrating with worry - almost by rote, Micqui rises to shepherd them out, saying -

"I think it's getting pretty close to bedtime, girls."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kay. Good night," she says to her mothers.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Goodnight, dear."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sleep well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Night."

And off to the twins' room - where Layla dramatically flops on her bed instead of starting getting ready for sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're upset," Samira observes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

"Mostly worried." She stares at the underside of Samira's bunk.

"...And angry."

Permalink Mark Unread

Samira crawls into Layla's bed to flop next to her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She rolls into her sister, snuggling, then glances at Micqui.

Permalink Mark Unread

Who comes to curl into Layla's back, arm over both her sisters.

"I am too," she says, softly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is all..." Vague gesture. "...A lot."

Permalink Mark Unread

Solemn nod. "It is, and it's terrifying, and it makes me want to find whoever's responsible and hurt them." Her voice stays astoundingly even.

Permalink Mark Unread

She gently pats Micqui's arm.

Permalink Mark Unread

She curls her arm a bit tighter. "I want to protect you," she says, voice nearly a whisper.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You need to be safe, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I want all of us to be safe. A team. But - you're my little sisters. I - don't want you to have to grow up before you're ready."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're ready."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Especially since we've got you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Soft smile, as she strokes Samira's hair and kisses Layla's head. "Thank you."

"We'll do this together, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just like always."

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

Hug, and - she'd like to sleep here tonight, if the twins don't mind.

(They can discuss contingency measures in the morning.)

Permalink Mark Unread

That's fine with Samira.

Permalink Mark Unread

Layla too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

(She brings them into her contingency measures, after. It's tough to talk about, to acknowledge out loud - but important, and this way she can tie Layla into the decision-making process early. She makes sure they don't withdraw on their end from their parents - feels so, so grateful when Elathea never slips, but so, so frustrated that no one seems to be making progress - mama has stopped using Essence entirely, and mom's just invented pain killers for her that only mostly work - )

(Micqui prepares the girls to work with her. She's going to need to actually create a proper network, she realizes, one that extends outside of their household, so - the girls need to be ready for that. Need to be brought out of their shelter.)

It's good, though, for the most part. Happier. They have their mothers back, parents who love them, who are amazing, delightful, inspiring people. Who're available, and who let the girls sit in on their projects whenever they want. Who explain themselves, and who rarely get angry, and who handle it well when they do. All three's education jumps forward in leaps and bounds after - Micqui realizes exactly how much she'd been drowning without this help - and it eases something Micqui hadn't realized was wrong.

She doesn't feel like the twins' too-young parent, not anymore. It lets her feel closer to them. Rely on them, and love them as the equals they are. It's nice.

(They have frequent contact with the Second Most High over the next few years, and Micqui seizes advantage of that for later connections - though it has plenty of current benefits, too. Luna's a good friend. Micqui brings the twins to the Silver Chair after some discussion and preparation, to sharpen her tongue politicking with Luna's court, to dance at miraculous balls. She so, so loves dancing with her sisters, she finds. Loves leading Samira across the dance floor in complicated waltzes, loves tangoing with Layla. Loves working together in politics - loves the surreal nature of politics here. It helps push back against her brain's near obsessive urge to find and exploit and enforce patterns. Helps her develop good habits.)

She likes family time. Their at-least-weekly craft nights are a lot of fun, and a good chance to get herself to expand her skills in an area she'd otherwise neglect. And while crafting isn't centrally her thing... It's interesting seeing what their mothers are working on.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a couple years later that at one of those family craft nights, Elathea is working on a piece of jewelry their mama hasn't worn in while. Two tigers with tail entwined arcing towards each other to form a loop, a sun caught in between them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mama had worn that necklace Layla's whole life, and then - had that fight with mom, and suddenly stopped.

Layla's been curious, to say the least.

"Is that mama's old necklace?" she starts.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, it is. We think it's time to see if this is back in fashion."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why'd she stop wearing it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The same reason she started wearing it. It's a little bit dangerous."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Mom. I'm sixteen. You can give me the actual explanation."

Permalink Mark Unread

(Soft giggle.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, since she asks.

"This collar was part of our sex life until I almost killed her with it."

Permalink Mark Unread

(Even more giggles.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Her brain rapidly flips through several responses before settling on - "So it's a masochism artifact? - Are you changing it so it's less actually dangerous? How's it work?"

If she focuses on science she can't blush.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is indeed what I'm doing." She beckons Layla over. "I'll show you, here."

Permalink Mark Unread

She comes over to squint at it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elathea gives a very technical explanation that somehow manages to also include a number of explicit ancedotes about times the collar has been used delivered with a completely straight face.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh gods Samira did not want to know this much about her mothers' past.

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle.

"Mom, you're embarrassing Samira." She gives her twin a considering look. "But it just does painful stuff? Could you do a different design to, let's say, painlessly control someone?"

She's still watching Samira's face.

Permalink Mark Unread

Samira's face undergoes an interesting series of contortions!

Permalink Mark Unread

"That would be a difficult thing to manage, requiring much more subtlety."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm a very subtle person," she assures her mom, like this isn't a bald faced lie.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course you are, dear." She pats Layla on the head.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sticks her tongue out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Micqui had also wanted to know none of that about her parents' sex life - but Samira's face makes up for it, almost. "But if your target was eager to obey... Would something that just gives them nudges be easier?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That depends how one goes about it. Some manner of positive reinforcement based on a given trigger, for example, would be relatively straightforward."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nice feelings if they're good, a little shock if they're bad?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or could you weave in something communicative, so they always know your will?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Squirmy Samira!

Permalink Mark Unread

"You two... If you want to sexually harass your sister, please do so in private."

Permalink Mark Unread

At least someone's on her side here.

"Thanks, mama."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome, dear."

Permalink Mark Unread

All that said... Samira is still pretty interested in the collar. She goes over next to Layla to look at it more closely.

"It's pretty."

Permalink Mark Unread

"When it comes to your mama, the shinyness of the object is always an important consideration."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It matches my scintillating personality."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Quite."

Permalink Mark Unread

She leans over to give her wife a kiss.

Then: "Would you like more pretty jewelry of your own, Samira?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She chews her lower lip.

"Maybe..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It doesn't have to be the exact same sort of pretty as this..." Then, with a soppy smile at her wife - "But I'll tell you a secret... All my favorite pieces are things people I love earnestly gifted me. Prettiness is just a nice bonus."

She raises her left hand a little bit, drawing attention to the bracelet there - Layla's first solo project, a knitted wire chain, which is very clearly a young girl's first work. (Gleam wears it all the time, and has for years.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Layla blushes. (At least her mama let Layla replace the 'jewelry' Layla made at four and stopped wearing it to formal dinners... But Layla's made no progress on replacing that particular bracelet in her mama's wardrobe. Mama just says she's too proud.)

"I can do much better, now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It seems your sister is ready to offer you a fine chance to prove it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "Yeah." She should be saying something cool and not just blushing, but - "I'd love to."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yay!

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd love to provide you with a gift, too..." Micqui murmurs, reaching over to brush some of Samira's hair behind her ear. "Though artifacts aren't my forte."

Permalink Mark Unread

Blush!

"Um, I'm sure you can think of something..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can coordinate," Layla suggests.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I could make something matching," Micqui says with a nod, "And consult on what features Layla includes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like a good project for you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It does. And you deserve wonderful things."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shy smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Especially that'll highlight how pretty you are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Surely that should be almost anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I bet there's an extra art to making someone as pretty as Samira even prettier."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's an art to everything, if you're willing to take it seriously."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I take Samira very seriously."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As well you should."

Permalink Mark Unread

Bright grin.

And then her gaze drifts back to her twin and her smile softens.

She - should ask lots more questions about collar construction, but she's burning to talk to her sisters now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nothing's keeping her here except herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.

"Can I come ask questions later, mom?" she asks. "I wanna talk to Samira and Micqui a bit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course, dear."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

And - to one of the more private side rooms for her and her sisters?

Permalink Mark Unread

Micqui's fine with that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure.

Permalink Mark Unread

Samira should sit between her sisters. Layla's - unsure, here, which means it's time to barrel through.

"I want to put a collar on you," she says, somewhere between rough and awkward.

Permalink Mark Unread

"O-oh. Um..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She cups Samira's cheek, gentle. "I think what Layla meant to say is... We like you, a lot, and not all the ways we like you are standard for sisters."

"And some of those ways... You're very competent, and very good, and we like it when you do things for us." Small smile. "And we're both control freaks, and we're showy control freaks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like you both too. Um. A lot. If you wanted to- give me something that told people that-"

"I'd like it."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs and hugs her twin. "Good."

"Sorry I can be a pushy dork, but - you're excellent, and I want to have you in every way you're okay with."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug!

"All the ways Micqui doesn't take first."

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes a face, withdrawing a little.

Permalink Mark Unread

Micqui sighs - and reaches out to curl her hand around Layla's neck. "I'd like to share all those ways," she says, firmly. "I like you too, Layla."

Permalink Mark Unread

Uncomfortable glance away.

"...Only if Samira's okay with being shared."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're both my sister. I don't want to give either of you up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you're my sister, and I love you, and - I'd feel really bad if there was stuff Micqui got first dibs on - but I don't want you to do stuff you don't want to do with me."

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuggle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuggle. "But I like you both, too, just... In different ways, and - I guess it's harder to put in my head how I like Micqui, so I haven't been thinking about it?" She glances at Micqui and blushes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want to kiss me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

"I want to kiss both of you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good, because I want to kiss both of you, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-We only have one mouth apiece," Samira says. "How's that going to work?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "We take turns, or the two of us could kiss different parts of your body at the same time..." And, smirking: "But I really want to watch you two kiss, right now."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lip bite, glance to Layla.

Permalink Mark Unread

Very interested noise.

She takes over cupping Samira's face from Micqui, and kisses her twin's cheek. "Let's give Micqui a little show," she teases then.

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you say so."

Permalink Mark Unread

Firm grip on Samira's hair - and kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!!

Permalink Mark Unread

Very kiss. (Layla's never kissed anyone, but she's read about kissing - and this isn't much like that at all - )

She presses into her twin hungrily, pushing Samira back against Micqui - and a bit under Layla.

Permalink Mark Unread

Micqui steadies them, hands on Samira's waist, as she makes an approving noise.

Permalink Mark Unread

Samira is even less experienced with kissing than Layla. But being between Micqui and her twin is a very good place to be, in her opinion.

Permalink Mark Unread

Layla does get tired eventually - and almost dizzy with how much she likes this, with how much she wants more. "You're beautiful," she says, kissing Samira's swollen lips again, "And I want to do so many things to you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mmmm. Please- please do everything to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mmm, very good manners." Kiss!!!

And - she moves so she's straddling Samira better, and starts undoing Samira's shirt. (Without stopping kissing her too much, of course.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Samira is getting even more excited, heartbeat speeding up, face flushing further.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perfect.

Layla's brain nearly shorts out once she sees her twin with her shirt off, all mussed up - and then the hunger in her surges again, leaving her own pulse to race, her own skin to flush in much the same patterns as Samira's.

Permalink Mark Unread

Micqui makes a soft noise.

"Can I see you, too, Layla?" she murmurs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Squirm! "Yeah," she says, breathless. Then, impulsively: "Keep Samira entertained?"

And - her own dress, belt first, but her fingers are shaking...

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't need to be asked twice.

She claims her own kiss, pulling Samira into her even more.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, that's really really good.

Permalink Mark Unread

She pulls back much too soon, instead pulling Layla into an equally hungry kiss - giving Samira quite a good view, especially of Layla's bare skin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Whine!!

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle!!!

She separates from Micqui a bit, levers herself off Samira, and moves to press along their older sister's other side. "Sit up and give Micqui a kiss," she orders her twin.

Permalink Mark Unread

She obeys with alacrity.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, having two eager identical twins in her lap is very nice. Micqui kisses Samira back - kisses Layla - and gets quite handsy with them both.

Permalink Mark Unread

Squirmy!

"May I touch you please?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes you may, good girl."

Permalink Mark Unread

(Layla doesn't wait for her to finish giving permission.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Her hands are on Micqui's body and it feels good!

Permalink Mark Unread

Teaming up on Micqui with her twin feels very nice.

Layla doesn't exactly have a more than theoretical knowledge of what she's doing, but she's got enthusiasm and the same basic body plan, so. She'll figure it out (and then tell Samira what to do).

(Bossing Samira around about how to please Micqui: also very nice.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Samira is very willing to be instructed.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's in turn very appreciative of their efforts, praising them both when they do well, rewarding them with kisses and firm touches... And, once she's satisfied, ordering Samira to serve Layla now.

Permalink Mark Unread

With pleasure.

Permalink Mark Unread

Layla's pleasure. (Samira is so good and Layla loves her and Samira's doing a very good job, and Layla is quite vocal with all of these opinions.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Samira is just in a floaty haze of happy to be told to be doing all these wonderful things at this point.

Permalink Mark Unread

Which means cuddles and kisses once Layla's moved into her own languid haze.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmmmm.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cuddles with her favorite girls: definitely one of the best activities ever.

Permalink Mark Unread

It absolutely is.

Permalink Mark Unread

And it gives Layla an energy once her body's recovered a bit.

Specifically, an energy to make Samira the best collar ever. She'll need to bind it so both she and Micqui can activate it but no one else can, which is complicated since the best artifacts only want to be bound to one person... Maybe a multi-artifact relay - the collar attuned to Samira, and then a bracelet attuned to each of Layla and Micqui, which can all communicate with each other...

(She has some very depressing conversations with her mom about safeties, and - yeah. The collar should be Samira's and not something either sister could use as a weapon.)

The final product isn't much like their mama's collar at all, in design or function. It lets them send mental concepts to each other, lets them monitor each other's locations, moods, and bodies, assists in some ways of using Essence on each other... And has a mode they can activate to partially suppress their own will in favor of the others' wills, which is self-limiting and which took her forever.

And - Layla thinks it's prettier than mama's collar. It's simple in form, a perfect golden circle that will lock seamlessly once on. No frills, no distracting shinies. All three have fine golden chains connected on opposite points - Samira's could be arranged to cascade down her front, or could be held as a leash. (They're deceptively strong; even a Solar would have trouble breaking them - but Samira can command them to burn anyone who isn't attuned to the paired bracelets, if they dare grab what belongs to her sisters.) Layla's and Micqui's chains are a bit more decorative, though she plays with them until they can be connected to the collar's chains, in case they ever want to hold Samira while keeping their hands a bit free.

(She makes sure not to get consumed while she's making it, even if it's exciting. She doesn't want to go down that path. This slows down production, of course, and means she does almost all of her work on it while hanging out with others - which obviates the surprise, but, then, having Samira watch the collar's construction is fun.)

She finishes, eventually, and presents all three pieces of jewelry to her sisters with a nervous thrill.

Permalink Mark Unread

"They all look so pretty."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Absolutely gorgeous."

Permalink Mark Unread

Blush!

"They'll look prettier on your bodies," she teases. "So Samira - put Micqui's bracelet on her, then mine on me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes ma'am."

Samira takes the bracelets and reverently slips them onto each sister's wrist.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Amazing," she murmurs, running her thumb over her own bracelet. She then locks gazes with Layla, smirks -

And then Samira's sisters pick up her collar together, working alongside each other to lock it around her neck.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

It fits on very nicely.

Permalink Mark Unread

And the resonance is perfect.

Layla's will enchoes into Samira's mind - kneel.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her knees fold.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Micqui takes her leash.

"Wonderful work, Layla," she murmurs, brushing her hand over Samira's hair. "It compliments her beauty very well."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles and kisses Micqui. "It does. Of course, now we'll have to select outfits for her that show it off..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No hardship at all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Whatever is pleasing to my mistresses," Samira says from her kneeling position.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good girl." Hair pet!

Permalink Mark Unread

She leans into the pet.

Permalink Mark Unread

Happy grin.

"Speaking of service..." She joins in the petting. "A new court season is happening soon, among the Sidereals. I want you two to accompany me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"To Yu-Shan?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. I think you're ready."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You need new arm candy for your triumphant return?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She brushes her fingers down Samira's cheek. "I need a servant," she says, with a little smile, "A more beautiful and more competent slave than any of them could ever afford." And then she looks at Layla - "And I need arm candy who can out-politic everyone else's arm candy."

Permalink Mark Unread

She shivers at 'beautiful and competent slave'.

"You need us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Like I've never needed anyone else."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would love to go with you."

Permalink Mark Unread

She kisses Micqui. "I'm not letting you go without me, so."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss! "Perfect." And, with an almost shy grin: "I'm no artificer - but I've retained some tailors with the right experience, and I've been working with them to design a courtly wardrobe for us..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I hope my dresses are appropriately flattering to the collar."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, that was an absolute requirement. 'Comfortable to kneel in' was another."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You think of everything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You do. This is why you've been teaching us all those dances and rituals?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course. I didn't know what season you'd finish in time for, but - there's some consistent bits, and now I don't need to update you guys on details more than a little."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Did you tell mom already?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, both she and mama know. They're thinking of using the time to really focus on their own projects, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mom's been close to twitching out of her skin," she says with a giggle. "It's nice they've put those things off for us, but - "

"It'll be nice to give them a chance to get caught up on that stuff, too. I'm - getting it now, why mom finds crafting so hard to pull away from."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're a lot easier to poke, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well." Awkward shrug. "I don't ever want to neglect you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Samira leans happily against Layla's legs.

Permalink Mark Unread

She kisses Layla, softly. "Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile. "Thank you."

Then: "Though... While I'm sure plotting the takeover of Creation is sufficient celebration for Micqui... I'd like to celebrate my twin's collaring a bit more energetically," she teases.

Permalink Mark Unread

"At your command."

Permalink Mark Unread

"World conquest can wait a day," she agrees.

This seems like an excellent time to test Samira's collar, too... Especially her giving up her will entirely.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a little scary- but freeing, too, like diving off a high cliff into the ocean.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's fun, and Micqui gets an amazing thrill from using Samira as an extension of herself, layered in with her delight about what she's having Samira do.

Permalink Mark Unread

It turns out both sisters controlling Samira at the same time is somewhat inevitably awkward, so after some playful argument Layla lies back and lets Micqui puppet her twin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good. Layla worked hard and deserves to be doted on.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Best girls.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Layla has one of the very few urges she's had since hitting her final growth spurt to sleep in the next morning. Her sisters are excellent, responsibility is terrible...

And Layla inherited every single drop of her mama's horrible morning person nature, so she gently slides out of bed as the sun starts peeking over the horizon.

Permalink Mark Unread

Samira stirs sleepily. "Mrlphl."

Permalink Mark Unread

Gentle soothing pets.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hmmmmmmm nice.

"Wher' you goin'?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's horrible morning person time," she murmurs, "So I'm going to get started on preparing to travel." Soft forehead kiss. "You can keep cuddling."

(Micqui is, in the other direction, a total night owl; Layla's not talking loudly enough to disturb her.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kay... Th'nks..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Another kiss, before she tucks her sisters in, makes sure the curtains are well pulled, and tiptoes out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Samira snuggles back in to Micqui, dropping into a light doze.

Permalink Mark Unread

Micqui stirs just enough to curl around her. It's a little while before she wakes up, still.

Permalink Mark Unread

This is a good and cozy time of day. Samira likes it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Micqui, too.

Alas, they must get up eventually. Samira needs to make sure Layla eats breakfast, after all.

Permalink Mark Unread

Someone's gotta take care of her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Absolutely. And Micqui trusts Samira to look after Layla far more than she'd trust anyone else.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hee.

Time to get to work, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Layla has papers spread across her desk and appears rather hard at work.

Permalink Mark Unread

Samira gets food together, then goes to poke Layla.

"Time to eat."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Hmmph?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Breakfast, Layla. Come eat with us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm almost done here..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She drapes herself across her twin's back.

"But the food's ready now..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She looks up, startled - and then puts her hand on Samira's arm and smiles. "Okay. I'll come eat," she says with a smile, before cleaning her brush and tidying up her papers.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yay!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles and gives her twin a kiss. "Thank you for getting me."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss! "You're welcome."

Permalink Mark Unread

She finishes getting her things together. "Let's go eat."

Permalink Mark Unread

To breakfast!

Permalink Mark Unread

Samira's cooking isn't something to miss.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's glad Layla thinks so.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Samira's cooking manages to be almost as tasty as Samira herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blush!!

Permalink Mark Unread

Micqui quite agrees. (Kiss!)

Permalink Mark Unread

Her sisters are so good.

Permalink Mark Unread

All three of them are perfect.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hee.

Permalink Mark Unread

They pretty much just have a bit of preparation left for joining the court... Reviewing courtesy and rituals, making sure their wardrobes fit, saying goodbye to their parents and getting any ongoing projects to where they can be paused or moved, packing...

The time flies by, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

It always seems to.

This is a big step. Moving away from home, away from their mothers. Samira's glad to be doing it with her sisters and not by herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.

Going off to school without her sisters - it hadn't been fun. There's a reason she came back, and a reason she doesn't regret leaving even if it might hit her socially now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Together forever.

Permalink Mark Unread

Micqui can toast to that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Layla, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

To sister power.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yu Shan won't know what's hit it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Definitely.

And then, it's time to go. Micqui will have to lead them on the path, but that is only right and proper.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can even hold Samira's leash during the trip.

Permalink Mark Unread

Got to make sure your important pet doesn't get lost.

Permalink Mark Unread

It'd be a tragedy.

Permalink Mark Unread

It would.

(They cause a minor stir when they do arrive around others - Micqui had arranged an apartment for them ahead of this, and sent a lot of their things - )

(And, well. While Samira isn't legally Micqui's slave, the collar and leash are a bit of a statement.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Samira keeps her head high. She knows who she belongs to, and those are the only opinions that matter.

Permalink Mark Unread

Micqui is very smug about this.

(Their apartment is tiny, though the area around it is as pretty as everything here. Still, it's going to be an adjustment from their previous life.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Good thing they all like each other so much. Maybe they can just go for lots of walks. (And if those are walks Micqui gets to hold Samira's leash... so much the better.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle kiss.

"I'd love that - and it'd fit into quite a few goals."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wouldn't mind discussing those a bit more..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Serious nod. "'Course. And I have shared a lot, but - that's mostly background details, and we do need to work more on - what we're doing." Face.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're a team."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Absolutely."

"Big things - I want to poke 'what's up with the Exaltations' more. Lady Luna's talking to the higher ranked gods, but - there might be some chatter among the lesser spirits or the other Sidereals, and someone else might've noticed something. Also - acquire more resources so we can keep investigating. Enough standing we can convince other Sidereals to let Luna squint at them, more sorcery information..."

"Other big thing - the Sidereals as a whole have definitely noticed that the Deliberative is fucked. I was hearing chatter about that even as a student, and Shochi definitely brought it up a few times. Sidereals aren't the sort to sit back and do nothing, usually - even observation is in preparation. Whatever they do, they're going to keep it to the shadows - and I want to learn the plans in motion before they get too much momentum to stop easily."

Permalink Mark Unread

Frown. "Yeah."

"And contingencies - I'm not sure we need them against our parents quite as much anymore, and - I think we're actually fairly decent on those." She rubs the back of her neck. "But - if this really is a Deliberative-wide issue, or an issue with every Exalt - we're going to need contingencies against everyone."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Yeah." She reaches over to pet Samira.

Permalink Mark Unread

Samira: is pet.

"Everyone is a lot of people. We definitely need information."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And friends who'll give us early warnings, even if they don't rope us directly in."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'll probably be better at that than me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'll have your part." She scritches Samira behind her ear.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Finding the things people don't want to talk about?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. My sneaky girl."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile!

"They'll never see me coming."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs.

"I'd like to introduce you two around tonight and tomorrow, some, to people I already have an in with or who've requested it - I'm also supposed to do orientation for my new job in a few days, which I'd like you two to come along to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Heaven's already busy, huh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seems like it always is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure we'll adjust."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll be right at home."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

"And we'll make sure you take breaks."

Permalink Mark Unread

She sticks her tongue out.

Permalink Mark Unread

A stuck-out tongue is just asking for a mischievous kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Apparently!

She giggles and kisses back.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Does being here make these kisses heavenly?" Samira wonders.

Permalink Mark Unread

"They already were." Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Heee.

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "Love you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Love you too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Love you more than all the stars in the sky."

Permalink Mark Unread

"More than all the hours of all the days."

Permalink Mark Unread

"More than all Creation," she murmurs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Intense kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

It's so good to be loved.

Permalink Mark Unread

It is.

And it's so good to have someone to love, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sisters are the best.

Permalink Mark Unread

They are.

(Micqui's watching them with a very sappy adoring expression.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

Permalink Mark Unread

She gives them both kisses. "C'mon, let's not get so busy we forget dinner..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes ma'am."

To dinner, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dinner's with an upperclassman of Micqui's, one of the few more or less genuine friends she made - a dragon-blooded, a bit older than her - and there isn't even a chair for Samira, just a thin pillow for kneeling on between her sisters. The dragonblooded isn't exceptionally at all well placed yet in Heaven's complex hierarchies, and probably never will be - but she's friendlier than most will be, and she shares gossip, and she even offers to tell her head of staff to arrange training for Micqui's own servant, since some of the norms are different here from those in the Deliberative.

(There's a gentle nudge through Samira's collar, a soft question.)

Permalink Mark Unread

It might be useful. She sends soft agreement and submission back.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd be delighted," Micqui says (sending pride and love in return) - and the conversation flows on.

They don't get a ton of concrete use, but... The relationship's been reestablished, at least a little.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's not nothing, for the first dinner back.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah. And sticking their toes in gently these first few days isn't a bad idea.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not at all. And now Samira will have another place to get some information from.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah - and it'll give her an in with other servants, in this household and elsewhere. Help her stand out less, at least a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Samira's gonna learn to be as sneaky here as she was out in the wilderness.

Permalink Mark Unread

Always improving.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll be the best servant Micqui could ever have.

Permalink Mark Unread

Samira already is the best servant in Creation. The best servant possible will be something beyond special. (Micqui is very confident Samira will achieve that.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Definitely the best possible use for the gifts of Unconquered Sun.

Permalink Mark Unread

Absolutely. Really, the Solars should serve Creation, so Samira's going to be the best Solar, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Happy shiver.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!!! (Samira's very pretty when she shivers like that.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Micqui should endeavor to induce the feeling in her more often, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, she plans to.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good!

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

And, other than some formal dinners with an old friend of Shochi's, an old teacher, the head of her branch - none of which will bear fruit soon, but Micqui keeps setting the stage, one piece at a time -

Other than that, all that's left is preparing for Micqui's first day of work.

Permalink Mark Unread

Slow steps indeed; no one even really acknowledges Layla unless she pushes - Micqui's old teacher is the only one to push back, challenging her - she changes his opinion a little when she does better at his rather aggressive pop quiz than the vast, vast majority of the students he's ever had (not that he says that out loud) -

But she's a free mortal in a world of the mighty, and quite possibly the only mortal here who's neither a slave nor servant nor Sidereal-in-training.

(And Night Solar Exaltations aren't very obvious; they get one person genuinely assuming the one in the collar is the mortal twin, and the one free is the Exalted twin, and one person claiming to assume it just to needle them.)

(It's going to be a long, long climb.)
