Being kidnapped by a dungeon is an almost universally stressful and disorienting experience; you're thrust into a new, often unpredictable, environment with little to no warning. That being said, you have more control over your experience than the dungeon might make you think! This is a guide to simple things an ordinary civilian can do in the event of dungeon kidnapping to minimize harm to themselves and others.

Rule 0: Don't panic!

Remaining calm in unpredictable situations can be easier said than done, but the number one thing you can do to help yourself and others is to have a level head. Over 99.9% of people kidnapped by dungeons make it out alive, and many of them are able to continue their lives as before without lasting trauma.

Note: Some dungeons are capable of psychic effects that induce particular mental or emotional states. If this happens to you, it's not your fault and it doesn't mean that you're weak-willed.

Stay Put

Whether you're kidnapped by dungeon monsters or teleported directly into the dungeon itself, you'll probably experience a strong instinct to get away (or fight, in the case of dungeon monsters). In most cases, you should resist this instinct. Staying calm and waiting for a dungeon team to find you conserves energy.

Some exceptions:

  • If there is an immediate environmental hazard in the dungeon, find a safer place to wait.
  • If you can see both the portal and a safe route to it that you can take on foot, walk towards the portal.
  • If you judge that you can evade a monster with moderate effort, do this and report the dungeon break. Do not waste time collecting any belongings not on your person.
  • If you see other people who are not behaving aggressively and it is safe to do so, group up with them. If they seem territorial or if you start feeling afraid or angry when you get near them, stop and put a safe distance between yourselves.

Conserve Energy

This applies both to yourself and to any electronics you may have on your person. If your phone can be powered on, put it in Dungeon Mode, which conserves battery life and intermittently checks for nearby electronics. It's helpful, but not necessary, to take pictures and take notes on your experience.

Try to amuse yourself or keep yourself calm. This page has a list of mental exercises designed to help people in dungeons occupy themselves. They may not eliminate unpleasantness, but they aim to reduce it.

Get Rescued

You may be rescued by one or a team of trained dungeon response professionals, one or more of whom may be an esper. Some things to keep in mind:

  • Not all espers have distinctive hair or eye colors; not all people with distinctive hair or eye colors are espers.
  • Non-espers are just as qualified as espers to rescue people from dungeons; the abscence of an esper on your rescue team does not mean that subpar effort is being made to rescue you.
  • Any espers rescuing you will likely be experiencing backlash. Backlash has a wide variety of presentations and backlashing espers often behave strangely. If someone rescuing you behaves inappropriately at any point, you can anonymously report this behavior here.
  • Cooperate with any instructions given by rescuers until you are released, even after you exit the dungeon itself.

Nightmare

If you have reason to believe you have been kidnapped by Nightmare, there is still hope. Do your best to remain calm. People you encounter within Nightmare may be constructs of the dungeon itself; if you see someone you know in real life they're more likely to be constructed by Nightmare. If Nightmare puts you in a dangerous situation, keep yourself physically safe to the best of your ability. You may be inside Nightmare for hours or days; prioritize enduring for as long as you can. When a rescue team finds you, cooperate with them. If you are psychically cleared by someone other than Kang Jaeha, you will need to wait for him to come clear you.
Nightmare-specific counseling and psychic help is available to you. No matter what happens inside Nightmare, you deserve to heal. Being kidnapped by Nightmare does not mean you are a bad person. Being kidnapped by Nightmare does not mean you deserve to suffer. Recovery is always possible.
