Paula represents Traceless's cat as well as Traceless himself. This is on paper a potential conflict of interest, since the two of them live together and spend time together while Traceless is backlashed, just like many esper partners do - but there are no agents Cricket is reliably willing to talk to directly, he needs a fair amount of disability accommodation for being a cat and can't tolerate anyone but Traceless well enough to get it from anyone but him, and in general he's just a huge pill and operates in the world with Traceless as a buffer, so Paula does the job whenever Cricket is between trial-period agents who seem for a week or two like they might work out.

"Hi, I'm calling to see if you think your client Aumento might be suitable for running four-dimensionals with navigational help? The navigational help has a very strong personality but he's a reliably helpful orphaned monster who can do it natively."

Permalink Mark Unread

Does he think Tim can run dungeons with a monster?  It's hard to say.  Tim's new at this, which in some ways means that running a dungeon with a monster is less of a disadvantage than you might think.  Everything about running dungeons is new, to Tim, so one more new thing might even not register.  On the other hand, he's a newbie esper and while he's going to be a fantastic dungeoneer in time, he's still learning.  "I think it's possible."  Racehorse on my phone, sort by dungeon monster dungeoneers - aha.  "This is Cricket, correct?"  Hmm....been running dungeons for several years...acerbic personality...Tim wants to be a professional so bad.  This might be workable.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's great. I can ask Traceless to mediate an introduction between them over the phone, see if it'll work well enough to last for the duration of a run?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Excellent idea, yes.  I'd hate to do an introduction at the portal, only to find that they weren't, ah, interpersonally compatible."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's, uh, still possible for Cricket to turn out to object to how he smells, so it might actually make more sense to have them meet at Thursday's 4055 in New York, which Cricket is definitely going to run and the question is whether he needs to wait for Kevin Shields to be available or not."

Permalink Mark Unread

Bill stares at his phone for a second, then rubs the bridge of his nose.  "How he smells," Bill states, flatly.  How on earth do you even operationalize that?  "Okay.  Is there a known list of triggers?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's not so much a known list of triggers as that he finds something, however petty, to object to about everyone except specifically Traceless, but some people it's a minor enough problem that he can still work with them," says Paula apologetically. "And, uh, some people find it cute when a cat complains about their haircut a lot, and can likewise work with him. Unfortunately Traceless is not much good for protecting Cricket in four dimensions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which is where Aumento comes into play.  I see.  I suspect that Aumento will have some navigational ability in 4d, given the sensory component of his power."  He clicks a stylus a few times, thinking it over.  "Aumento does have, ah - experience with volatile psychological backlashes.  I imagine that if Cricket doesn't object overmuch to him, it should work out well enough for one run."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Great. Does Thursday's 4055 look like it'll work?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let me check..." He pulls up an interactive calendar and pokes through it.  "Yes, I think we can swing it.  I'll confirm with Aumento first, but I don't imagine he'll object.  Novelty factor, if nothing else."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is that! - Is Aumento's power known to work on monsters or at least animals?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's known to work on both, he will very gingerly use it to assess damage on monsters."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Great. What time works best for him? Cricket's flexible on that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mornings would be preferable.  Let's put it down tentatively at 9 o'clock local time, I'll confirm with Aumento that the unusual circumstances are acceptable and confirm the time as well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Excellent. I'll put you as a CC if they manage to clear-and-kill before then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I appreciate the consideration.  I'll follow up with Aumento and reach out to you by end of day."

Permalink Mark Unread

And at 9am Cricket is in New York taking a pre-meeting nap on a pallet of water bottles that is waiting for the rescues. (The other side of the pallet is still accessible, it's fine.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Awwwwww kittycat. She is looking respectfully but not petting him.

Permalink Mark Unread

You know, he's a little sad he probably won't be getting an animal.  But if he could, a gorgeous winged dungeon kitty would be on the list.  NORMALLY his checklist for Meeting a New Person would involve a glance at their photo and a reminder on how to pronounce their name before walking in.  However, 'Cricket' is both eminently recognizable and extremely easy to pronounce.  He murmurs in an undertone to Summer, "D'you think it's rude to wake him up?"  It's not quite esper-quiet, there's enough background noise that he can't murmur as quietly as possible.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's illegal," says Summer solemnly.

Permalink Mark Unread

The phone alarm in Cricket's little clutch bag goes off with a chirping birds noise. He paws open the bag and baps the phone. Gives a giant toothy yawn. Looks at Summer, since she's the more obvious esper of the two.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi! I'm Summer, Aumento's partner for when he takes breaks, that's Aumento."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why are you named after a season?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's my mom's fault! My sisters are named Winter and Autumn!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's stupid."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...your name is Cricket."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm a cat. It is an appropriate cat name." He licks his paw and looks at Aumento.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good morning, sir."  Start out slow.  He's going to find something to dislike about you, you just have to make sure it's something minor.  "Your fur is gorgeous."  Okay that wasn't slow.  Oops.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know." Pawlick. "It is fluffier in four dimensions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm looking forward to seeing it.  I uh, I messaged you online, once, you said it was even better if we had 4d eyes to see it.  I don't know if you remember it?"  Argh.  Uptalk.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have many admirers and it does not sound like you were very special in how you went about it." Biiiig wingstretch.

Permalink Mark Unread

What do you even say to that.  He looks at Summer for a second, then back to Cricket.  "Well, maybe I'll do some research and figure out an angle nobody's used yet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"In your copious spare time?" says Cricket. "Now, how much of your power do I need versus a flying multitool, will it make flapping difficult to calibrate such that I should first try catching a pigeon out here, and will it protect my fur?"

Permalink Mark Unread

What do you know about my spare time you little - focus.  No strong opinions.  "Really not much.  I can give you a multitool's worth right now, if you want - the power gets more expensive the further away from me you are.  If there isn't a...pigeon less than, uh, call it two hundred feet from me that might get expensive."  Normally that'd be way too much but Summer's here and it's not a lot of power use.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's New York City. There are plenty. But that is pretty constraining for a divebomb. Maybe that balcony railing." He points a paw. "Yes?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Squint.  "I haven't had call to pounce many pigeons lately, you're the expert.  Go for it, I'll keep my power on you.  Uh, Summer, d'you mind..?"  He lifts his shirt slightly, for better access.  Then has a minor anxiety attack about doing so. Surely this won't offend him, he's - well, what's done is done.  Too late.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cricket barely spares a glance for Summer looping an arm around Aumento's waist. He does a little test-wiggle, then flies for the chosen railing, and presuming flight handling is as expected he becomes Death From Above for a hapless pigeon that was investigating a fallen falafel.

Permalink Mark Unread

He melts into Summer a little, and whistles at the brief feline fracas.  "Whoof.  Poor pigeon never saw that coming."  It's a little much at those distances, but it's basically fine, and in the actual dungeon they'll be considerably closer.  And he has an emotional support Summer.  Oh, right.  I hope she got briefed on how Cricket can be.  "I don't think your name's stupid, by the way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is a popular normal human name but I do sometimes tease Mom about what she would have done if Winter had been twins."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Winter and...hm.  Invierno, I guess?  No, that's a bad match."  He shrugs a bit, watching Cricket soar through his domain.  "Hope he doesn't have to deal with delivery drones."  He really is gorgeous.

Permalink Mark Unread

"She would have named a boy Vernon but a fourth girl she might have picked a month-name. Or 'Anna'."

Permalink Mark Unread

Cricket does a barrel roll and lands neatly near Aumento's feet. "Not so hard to get used to. And I can bite through the monsters like this?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yessir.  Depends on the monster, of course.  Strength, durability, and a little bit of regeneration.  Probably good to keep it on you, in case you've gotten hurt.  Works best on recent stuff, but it helps a bit on older injuries."  He'll adjust the power usage to keep himself backlash-neutral.  Cricket is, after all, a literally irreplaceable dungeon asset with a literally inhuman level of skill at navigating 4D dungeons.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The monster is Swiss army knives with beetle wings," Cricket says. "They will fit in my mouth if I don't have to worry about getting cut." His phone rings. "That will be Traceless to introduce us, his morning dungeon must have run long." He has a doodad he can hook a claw through to fish the phone from the bag.

Permalink Mark Unread

But we're already introduced...?  "Uh, might need a little more than that to kill them."  He'd explain more, but apparently he's going to be talking to Traceless.  Again.  Hopefully he'll make a better impression this time.  But then, you only get one shot at a first impression.

OHSHITPHONE - he cuts the power to Cricket before claws can make contact with anything valuable.

Permalink Mark Unread

Phonebap. "Hello! How were the moles?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They liked collapsing their tunnels, I'm okay but sorry I’m late, is Aumento there already?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. I can kill a pigeon with superstrength."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I hope the pigeons don’t have superstrength. Hi Aumento, can you hear me?" Cricket has his phone at a normal non-esper volume.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yessir, I can hear you just fine.  Can you hear me?"  His face is kept as blank as possible, but his body language is visibly tense.  He's reeeeaaaaalllllyyyyy not looking forward to this conversation!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Loud and clear. You might not actually need me but sometimes it helps to have someone who's already familiar with Cricket in the mix when he's meeting new people, he's the best in the world at seeing and moving around in 4D but needs a bodyguard if there's any monsters more functional than decorative."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want one of the pocketknives?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, they're no way going to live but I guess a dead one we could sell to a museum, so yeah, I'll have Tess get a box for one sent over just in case."

Permalink Mark Unread

Purr.

Permalink Mark Unread

"He'll be fine, knives aren't a problem for my power.  Uh, Cricket, I cut the power on you when you were about to touch your phone - humans often have issues adjusting to my power being on them.  It doesn't usually feel like anything's different until you touch something and break it.  You're the first monster I've used my power on, I don't know if you have - instincts about it?"  Traceless is going to judge me for never using my power on a rescued monster before that's stupid, Tim, how many rescued monsters are there?

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wait, what, Paula said you'd tried monsters."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I used to be much bigger. It is a little like being much bigger without taking up more space."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry, I misspoke - I mean, the first, uh, monster who's a person.  My power is fine-grained, I can use a little sliver of it on live monsters to see how injured they are, or for tracking if they're stealthy.  And once for an injured monster at the Monster Zoo.  But I don't, you know, go out of my way to give dungeon monsters superpowers.  Cricket will be the first dungeon monster who can tell me how it feels to get augmented."  Frriiiiiccckkkkkk.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, are you who John called in for the walking mushroom? Anyway, apparently it feels like being bigger but without taking up more space."

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh good, I did something right when Traceless was around to see it, so I don't look like a complete buffoon.  "Yeah, that was me.  Poor thing.  Anyway, you can handle the power without needing any more practice, Cricket?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do wonder how it will be pulling you around in the dungeon. I usually do that by putting a harness on Kevin or whoever."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tess sent one ahead but, yeah, the concept has not been tested against superstrength."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can just unweave one of my spare vests and we can tie it off - wait, shouldn't we be more worried about the flying knives cutting the leash?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Only if they're smart."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I'll bring a few leads we can use and if one of them breaks, we can use another.  If we lose two leads, we can pull back to the portal and figure something else out."  Third rule of superstrength: always bring spares.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cricket nods. "If they are very smart knives we will need one made of Kevlar or something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll give Tess the heads up about that and about a box for a capture if you have a day of good hunting. Sounds like you have a functional rapport going over there though?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yessir."  He hasn't found something to dislike about me yet!  Progress!  And I didn't fuck up in front of Traceless' partner ally coworker  colleague friend again!  Now I just have to survive my first 4d dungeon!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Great. You take good care of my cat, Aumento. Be professional, kitty."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm always professional."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is that what that is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yessir, will do.  Cricket'll be fine with me.  If anything, he'll be the one taking care of me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is always the way," agrees Cricket. "You can call Tess on this same call before I hang up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks, Cricket, I'll call Tess -" This adds her to the call and as soon as a woman's voice is heard Cricket disconnects.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kind of weird that he wants to call someone else - wait, it's got to be backlash.  Okay.  Don't think about it!  "What do you normally need in a, uh, lead?  How long should it be?"  I'm about to be led around on a leash.  By a cat.  What a world.

Permalink Mark Unread

The one Tess ordered should be around... there. He claws the parcel open. "Something like this."

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, that's a sturdy canvas leash with a solid metal clip on it.  Does it have a rating label?  Yep, looks like it's rated for four hundred pounds worth of weight, which...is probably fine?  He could break it if he really tried, but he's not going to really try.  "I think this should be fine, actually.  I was expecting a normal leash, not something like this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good. Do you have more stuff to do before we go in?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yessir, I just have to check my gear and get my vest on.  I'll be ready in just a few minutes?"  I hate uptalking when I want to be taken seriously, ugghhhh.

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right." He flaps off to say something to the DRT coordinator, maybe just that they're going ahead as planned.

Permalink Mark Unread

Probably that the coordinator has a lopsided face, or something.  "Well, that went pretty well.  I'll see you soon?"  He'll gently untangle himself from Summer and give her a jaunty smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

The coordinator does have a lopsided face but Cricket is very professional and doesn't mention it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yup, I'll be in the tent with the pizza 'n bagels 'n cheesecake I just ordered. When in New York!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Enjoy!"  You know, it's funny how I used to think I had the best backlash ever.  Funny how things change.  It doesn't take him too long to suit up.  But just in case, he goes through his kit one more time.  Both pistols, the core detonation charges, medical kit, toolvest.  Spare ammunition.  His leashes.  Carol would laugh herself sick if she saw me wearing a leash.  The thought's a little less painful than it might have been a month ago, but it still brings a twinge of sadness and regret.

Okay.  He's ready.

Permalink Mark Unread

The portal's up high but it happens to be near some construction scaffolding that Aumento can climb. Cricket, of course, flies.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's going to trust that the portal will dump people out slow motion style.  He's not the hugest rock climber ever, but he does it pretty often and scaffolding is designed to be climbed.  He checks the scaffolding to make sure it's locked and not going anywhere.  After that, he's up in less than a minute.  "I'll go in first, then turn around and buff you as soon as I see you?"  It's the standard approach for his power.

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right."

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay.  He's moments away from entering a dungeon.  He checks over his gear one last time, takes a deep breath.  Puts his goggles on.  Augments himself slightly more than necessary to fend off knives - and leaps.

Hello, alien world.  What's it like on this side of the portal?

Permalink Mark Unread

Four dimensional dungeons look a lot like three dimensional dungeons, except that the monsters that are appearing out of thin air were actually very close by already and just hiding a millimeter kata, instead of teleporting into place or having been properly invisible. This one looks like a mountainscape: slopes of rock and scrubby plants, snowcapped, chilly, the air a little thin but not enough that it seems like Cricket might have any trouble flying. He can't see any of the vics. A pocketknife on ladybug wings attempts to corkscrew him in the ear. Another goes for his ankle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, the earknife is a problem, he's wearing earpro and he would like to keep using it.  Thankfully, as a card-carrying Vermonter, he has a finely-tuned reflex for swatting mosquitos without breaking his own skull.  That's one knife down.  The other, he uses to calibrate how much power he needs to protect himself(and Cricket!) from flying knives.  He turns around and raises his pantleg slightly to give the knife free access, so he can gauge power usage without ruining his pants in the first ten seconds of the dungeon.

As soon as Cricket comes through, Cricket's getting augmented.

Permalink Mark Unread

He comes in and almost immediately blips out of apparent existence and then reappears, lands near Aumento's feet on the slope where the portal lets out, his feathers and tail glitching out of existence. "There are SO MANY knives," he says in alarm. (There's one methodically shredding through the back of Aumento's shirt now, and one interested in stabbing through his left hip pocket. They might cut through the leash just by accident even if they never go after anything other than Aumento himself.) "Have you got me covered? Enough?"

Cricket in four dimensions looks - fluffier. A positively eldritch amount of fluffier. There is an amount of fluff the human mind can comprehend and he's got more than that. And his pupils are four-pointed stars, here, and when he startles at things that Aumento can't see he does it far enough that his ears and wingtips clip out of the thin layer of existence so Aumento can't see those either.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yessir, you're good.  More than.  And remember, I can heal you, I can't save you if you're lost…"  He's absentmindedly swatting them as they come - to him, they're less dangerous than mundane mosquitos are to a mundane human.  Mosquitos carry diseases, after all.

... trying to sense where Cricket is is incredibly disorienting, in the literal sense.  Cricket is clearly several feet away.  But his power is insisting he's almost touching Cricket???

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do I seem lost if I do this?" Cricket asks, slipping ana. He doesn't sound much farther away - actually, the monsters are audible too, not that this allows a human hand to slap them before they descend to the correct level.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I...uh...My power thinks you're right here, but - I don't see you?"  He looks at the ground, confirms his footing.  Then closes his eyes and tries to inch closer to Cricket, swatting knives as he goes.  His mundane senses are useless, so he'll just follow wherever his power thinks he should.  Probably it won't work, but imagine if it did?

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is absolutely hilarious to watch. You can't move like that, you clown." The leash goes taut and Cricket comes back into view facefirst. "Here."

The mountains are mostly all still there but they're all new shapes and sizes here, mostly not by a lot.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was worth a shot.  Thanks."  Slap swat crash.  WOW I hope the camera doesn't get busted.  "Where to?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's somebody over there on that peak -" Die die die ladybug Leatherman! Hiss! "You can probably do the climb all at this layer if you don't like sliding, it's not the mazeiest." Hiss pounce die diediedie there are a lot of these.

Permalink Mark Unread

There sure are!  "I'm trusting you to pick a good, uh, layer for me, if you say this one's good then I'll do it."  Time to get to going.  As cavalier as he was about the knives, they're sort of a problem when it comes to climbing.  Usually his own two feet are fine and he can swat as he needs, but once or twice they go after him while he's using hand for balance.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's all mountain climbing. If you like sliding fine then maybe there is a bit you'll want to take kata of here so the plants are thinner at the most climbable spot." Cricket sets out, magnanimously not criticizing his bodyguard for not being able to fly or having a funny shaped liver.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sliding's fine by me."  He shall follow his feline guide wherever Cricket leads him.  He's got a decent amount of reinforcement on, there's only so much he can get hurt like this.  Even if he falls and cracks his head on a stone, he'd be fine.  Not happy, but fine.

Permalink Mark Unread

It’s a hike and it’s not shortened by Cricket periodically pausing to increment his pocketknife body count. If Aumento has trouble with any steep parts due to his inferior form they can find a level with a shallower grade. His clothes are likely to be a total loss. Occasionally his power pings like a tiny pair of scissors is after his lungs from the inside and his mosquito slapping reflexes are probably not accustomed to the bugs angling for his knees from within his pants, let alone his intestines from within those.

Permalink Mark Unread

As much as Tim complains about how his power working equally well everywhere instead of focusing on what’s necessary, there’s something to be said for having reinforced intestines.  And really, these knives aren’t even that bad, in terms of power usage necessary to keep himself unperforated.

Hopefully he’ll be able to make his way to the victim without showing the vic exactly what an esper glowup does under the hood.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mercifully, the pocketknives have no instincts for what bits are sensitive physically or socially. They seem no likelier to go there than anywhere else.

They reach the correct mountain having swatted fully 630 Swiss army knives between them. There's the vic. Lady pushing sixty, looks cold but not frostbitten, and this dungeon doesn't physically attack vics but she has some scrapes on her hands from rocks or plants, so she might have done a bit of clambering around. She yelps when she sees Cricket.

"Rude," he says, instead of "bitch".

Permalink Mark Unread

“Good morning, ma’am.  I’m Aumento, this is Cricket.  He’s our guide out of here, he’s the whole reason I was able to reach you.  Are you okay if I use my power on you?  It’ll make you stronger and tougher, heal faster and has a sensory component as well.”

Swat slap smash   He’d love a bug zapper calibrated for flying knives.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's a monster," she says, pointing at Cricket.

"Try to control your jealousy," says Cricket.

"I - what?" she says, more confused than offended.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, this is actually hilarious!  Relaxed body language, chill tone of voice.  “Yep!  He’s a rescued monster, he survived his dungeon’s death.  Cricket, may I please pet you?  Just to show that you’re safe?  Uh, for us?” And because you look glorious. He kneels down slightly, swatting away at knives.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not the one she has to let carry her out," Cricket points out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Slap swat.  Well.  That's a very reasonable argument.  "Ma'am, I promise you're going to be fine.  I have a reinforcement power, all we have to do is walk out and follow Cricket.  Can you do that for me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't see the portal, where is it -"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's, uh.  Sort of that-a-way."  He points in what is probably the right direction, if you ignore the kata/ana directions.  "This is a 4-dimensional dungeon, which is where our expert here comes in.  He's the best in the world at this, I'm just his bodyguard.  But we do need to get going, okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's other people in here, I could hear them sometimes, but I don't know where, I never saw them. Do you have a water?" she says.

"They can probably hear you from here if you want to shout that we're on the way," says Cricket, looking around in a way that briefly disappears his head and makes the victim shriek again. "Some of them anyway. If you're loud."

Permalink Mark Unread

It's not like I'm going to alert the knives anymore that I'm here.  "I'm going to be pretty loud."  He inhales once, twice, then hollers at the absolute top of his lungs, with an enhanced diaphragm moving the air.  "RESCUE'S ON THE WAY, FOLKS!  DUNGEON ESPER AND - " uhh how do I say 'dungeon monster cat' without scaring someone fuckit just say something "EMANCIPATED DUNGEON CAT ARE COMING!  SHOULDN'T BE TOO LONG!"

"How do you normally announce yourself to people who can't see you, Cricket?"  Should have asked first, stupid.  Wait, shit.  Not stupid.  Unprepared.  Wait, that's worse than being stupid.  Argh.

Permalink Mark Unread

The lady covers her ears, and then says, "Water?" again when he's through shouting. "If you want me to walk instead of carrying me like the monster, uh, said?"

"Usually I have my escort do it like you just did," says Cricket. "They vary in how they like to describe me. There is no really polite word for a minority of a couple dozen people who everybody is racist about."

"I'm not racist," snaps the lady. (She's black.)

"Keep telling yourself that," says Cricket, rolling his eyes right out of view and back.

Permalink Mark Unread

He takes a second, then digs a water bottle out of his vest.  "Yeah, here you go.  Don't mind Cricket, he's - like that.  How long've you been there?"  He also takes a moment to remind himself to ask Cricket how he prefers to be addressed.  ... maybe it'd be better to ask Traceless, given Cricket's attitude.  How does she look, is she in shape for a little hike?

Permalink Mark Unread

She chugs the water. She's not injured but she does not look like mountain climbing is her natural habitat. "Overnight."

"You are going to have to carry her at least a little because the portal is not at this w-elevation," says Cricket.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's okay, I can climb with her.  Should be easy, especially with you as a guide."  Flattery works with cats, hopefully it works with this cat.  "D'you want a snack bar?  And what's your name?"  He offers her a variety of snack bars - chocolate peanut butter, orange raisin, regular peanut butter, and oats'n'honey, today.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Florence," says, apparently, Florence. She takes an oats'n'honey and wolfs it down.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, Florence.  I want to use my power on you, just a little bit.  It'll make you a little stronger and tougher, but also help me keep track of you.  I can save you from getting hurt, I can't save you from getting lost.  Is that okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Am I going to get lost?!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope!  Not with my power on you and Cricket to get us both home, I just want to make sure I've got your permission."  Relaxed body language, grin at her a little.  Project confidence.  The relaxed body language may be slightly undercut by a knife-swat.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cricket is murdering a little pile of knives himself and depositing them in a tidy heap.

"Why do you need permission, is it dangerous?!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not dangerous to you or anything, it just makes you stronger, and it has a sensory component, which is why I like to ask permission.  D'you mind if I explain it to you while we make our way out of here?"  If I have to pick up and carry an uncooperative old lady I'll do it but I won't feel great about it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can see inside people when I'm in dungeons and explaining this never helps," Cricket tells Aumento sagely.

"You're just supposed to rescue me! What is this, the doctor's office?" exclaims Florence.

He nods slightly at Cricket.  "Well, let's get going, then.  One rescue, coming right up."  He does tag her with the smallest wisp of his power - it's basically free, if you ignore the mild moral peril of using a Sensor-class power on an unwilling victim.  It's not like anyone will be able to prove it, and he has reason to believe she might be or become injured on account of all the goddamn mosquitoknives who are currently trying to corkscrew his abdomen, his left thigh, and his eye protection.

Is she competent to come with him for the first section, or is he going to need to carry her?  He's probably going to have to hold her hand, to let Cricket tug them kata and ana as he sees fit.  If he aumgented her, he could probably put her in a blood choke and not have to deal with talking to her this is a BAD IDEA.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cricket leads the way back. "You do need to be supporting her weight for her to come along on a slide."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yessir.  Okay, Florence.  Ready for me to pick you up?"  She's getting Scooped, but he'd really prefer if she get Scooped willingly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"For crying out loud, if you came to my place of work I wouldn't ask you if I had permission to do it!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I'd hate to startle you."  Scoooooooooop.  "Lead on, Cricket."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tug tug. (Florence shrieks when the mountains "change shape".)

Permalink Mark Unread

It is, pretty dramatic, but Tim's ears are not glad that they were part of the esper tune-up.  His are not as sensitive as Menhir's ears, but.  Nobody enjoys shrieking, even through earpro.  And in the meanwhile, he'll just have to deal with mountaineering with zero available hands.  It's a little more expensive in terms of backlash, since he jumps or down up slopes that he normally might have climbed.

Does this kind of jumping provoke more shrieking?

Permalink Mark Unread

No, that seems fine with her, but she has no useful instincts for how to distribute her weight while he does it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Honestly, if she doesn't actively cause problems he's going to be happy with it.  He can compensate for awkward landings with increased power use.

The knives are really getting to be annoying when he can't swat them usefully.  Surely the portal isn't far, right?

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's up and kata of here." Cricket can cover vertically complicated ground a lot faster than Aumento and is laying waste to knives when waiting for him to catch up. "Here, so you can see -" Pull.

(Florence yipes.)

Permalink Mark Unread

It is pretty startling.  "Got it, thank you.  You're doing a lot of work, clearing those knives out."  True AND nice, perfect.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The superpower is very helpful for it." Trot trot leap flap. Almost there.

Permalink Mark Unread

That was basically a compliment!!!!!  Tim wouldn't have expected to get one from Cricket, especially given Cricket's entire everything.  But.  It's enough to put a spring in his step for the final stretch, even with Florence's complaints.

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you mean to carry her out instead of dropping her I will sit on your shoulder so the knives don't get me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yessir, I think I'd like to carry her out."  Impossibly fluffy kitty!  Impossibly fluffy kitty!!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

LEAP and then: shouldercat.

(Florence jolts and yelps.)

Permalink Mark Unread

You know, this yelp is actually pretty valid.  It's...interesting, watching his fur.  And maybe a little dizzying.  He stalls for a moment, ostensibly securing his cargo, then hops through the return portal.

Sure enough, he descends, Florence in hand, Cricket on his shoulder.  Until Cricket decides to fly off, at least.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cricket glides off during the descent. He has practice using the slow fall from a portal to do fun stalling tricks. Whee!

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, he's not upset with his power at all.  But those tricks do look pretty fun.  "There you go, Florence.  Back on your own two feet.  Support staff are over there, go ahead and check in with them, okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Florence harrumphs and plods off to the support staff to demand additional water and granola bars. A support worker calls Aumento over to pick up an emergency kit for a specific suspected victim of this dungeon, who they've just heard from the bureaucratic grapevine has some health problems, and -

"And will the cat be able to recognize the guy from a picture, in 4D -"

"Wow," says Cricket. "Do you know what 4D means, you stupid idiot?"

"...it means four dimensional, it's just an abbr-"

"And how many dimensions would you be recognizing this guy in, if you met him?"

"Look, I just need to know if you can priorit-"

"Would it possibly be more dimensions than a flat photograph can provide, nincompoop, or are you going to tell me that you can only recognize people from holograms -"

Permalink Mark Unread

Tim is going to intervene before this turns into a catfight frank exchange of opinions.  He doesn't try to rely on his size to intimidate people, but in this case he's perfectly happy to loom slightly and speak in a slightly louder tone of voice than usual.  "Cricket is the only reason we're able to do a dungeon like this, and he's just as capable of recognizing someone from a photo as I am.  We'll be perfectly fine."  In the meanwhile, he'd like to confirm details on the emergency kit, check that it's moderately knife-proof, and tuck it into his slightly disheveled vest.  Probably not going to last the rest of the day, which is a bummer.  Usually there's only damage on the outsides of these things...

Permalink Mark Unread

"They say he'll tell people they have asymmetrical kidneys, how should I know if he can see faces -"

"I can see faces. And I can hear you talking about me in the third person. I am a four-dimensional cat, not a third-person cat. Is there anything else besides that you want this guy rescued next?" says Cricket witheringly.

Permalink Mark Unread

It would be easier to be annoyed at this guy without Cricket being hilarious.  Instead, Tim notes down the guy's description, he'll see about an intervention later.  Bill had impressed upon him that almost nothing was more important than not alienating the completely, literally, irreplaceable native 4D dungeon guide. "I'm ready, if there aren't any operational constraints we need to know about."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Great." Back to the scaffold. Cricket flies up and waits for Tim to climb.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's faster, this time.  He's up the ladder in under thirty seconds.  He waves at Cricket.  "See you on the other side," he says, before jumping through the portal.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cricket follows promptly. "Two hundred feet?" he says. "I have not seen that guy already so I want to get up to the peak and maybe fly a bit higher than that, see if I can spot him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, I hadn't said anything because I wanted to be sure, but.  My power thinks you're right on top of me, even though you're a few feet away from me, in 3D space.  It's why I closed my eyes to try to find you, before.  I think it should be fine to go further than two hundred feet, but.  This is my first 4D dungeon and I promised to take good care of you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If I can do that I should be flying that guy his emergency kit without waiting for you to crawl around the mountains, once I see him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yessir.  Do you have a radio, in case something happen?"  And does he have a tactical dungeon catpack, for that matter?

(Tim also has Knives.  As many Knives as any human could possibly want.  More than that, really.  They're in the process of getting swatted.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"I did but I think a knife got it." He's got a little bag on him, yup. The fluff resents it and is trying to swallow it. "If I am quick maybe nothing important in the kit will be stabbed before I get it there. Clip it on for me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yessir.  Ten or twenty minutes should be fine at this strength at anything less than a quarter mile, but I'll have to take a break if you get that far."  He really really doesn't like letting a charge get this far away, especially if there's a risk of a backlash spike.  The only reason he's considering this is because A: it really seems safe, B: Cricket thinks it'll be safe and he's literally the world expert on 4D navigation, and C: he's right next to the portal, he can hold on 'til he passes out and just fall through the portal and recover later.

Cricket gets the emergency kit.  "Good luck, I'll see you soon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There there," says Cricket condescendingly, and he takes off and is out of view presently.

Permalink Mark Unread

He spends the time waiting for Cricket to signal him swatting knives and trying to orient himself to Cricket's location.  His power, perhaps for the first time, is really not cooperative about where Cricket is.  "Right there" doesn't actually help when you can't point to "right there".  It's interesting enough to take his mind mostly off the knifesquitos, at least.

Permalink Mark Unread

The knifesquitos don't have anything better to do than try to stab him (and Cricket). Cricket, as a four dimensional being, is never poked in the internals, only the fluff (and the nose, and the toebeans, etcetera). Eventually Tim can feel him settle onto a mountainside and paw at the clip.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's not actually all that good at waiting.  Can he see Cricket from here?  He's also going to see if he can reach out to Cricket via radio, maybe it won't work.  But if he does nothing, it definitely won't work.

Permalink Mark Unread

He can't see Cricket.

"What is it? I am still knifeproof, are you going to keel over?" asks Cricket's voice over the comm.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nossir, range is fine.  I wanted to know if you think I should go to you and the vic."  Swat slap crunch.  He's been tossing the knife "corpses" through the portal, on the theory that it could turn out to be a fantastic dungeon material.  Hopefully nobody minds.  If they do, they can reply with a paper airplane or something.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, I'll come get you once he has his meds. It looks like it will be a worse hike than the last."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yessir.  I'll wait for you."  He thumbs off the radio, feeling vaguely dissatisfied that he can't just walk to the dang cat.  But it's not just a casual Sunday stroll, it's a 4D dungeon, and if Cricket tells him to wait near the portal he can do that.

If he'd realized he'd be waiting near the portal, he might have asked for a bunch of boxes, to catch knives.  But he can't leave the dungeon without dropping protection on Cricket.  Oh well.

Smack and catch and crush and swat...

Permalink Mark Unread

Cricket reappears, seizes the leash, and pulls. "This way. This one is definitely going to need to be carried."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yessir."  He will be lead by the cat, wherever the cat may bring him.  He will marvel at his life, but it's not substantially weirder than the last four months of his life.

... he's going to pick up the pace, too.  "How bad is it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not a doctor but he didn't say anything and he was lying down and his pulse was all over the place."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shit.  Okay.  How about a light, sustainable jog, terrain depending.  Counterintuitively, light use of his power can help a bit on jogs - it's easier to propel your body.  Marathons would be a problem, though.  He's guessing he has another two or three hours left in him, depending on the victim's status.

Permalink Mark Unread

The victim, when they get there - Cricket pulls Tim around a lot more on this hike to get around obstacles and find favorable slope angles - is a big guy, conscious and able to look at Tim but clearly not doing so hot. He's got socks on (no shoes) but his fingers and ears are visibly suffering from inadequate circulation.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, Tim's a pretty big guy, too, and has to be a baseline amount of augmented to handle this dungeon.  "Hey, sir, how are you feeling?  I'm Aumento, I'm a rescue esper."  He throws his power over the guy like a blanket - what's wrong with this guy?  And can his power help fix it?

Permalink Mark Unread

The power certainly isn't doing him any harm. Looks like he's got General Fuckuppedness of the Circulatory System, a highly technical diagnosis that only qualified professionals like Tim can dispense. He blinks at Tim but doesn't say anything.

"This is not a hospital, it is a dungeon. Pick him up and hand him over to someone who can call him an ambulance," snaps Cricket.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, I just need you to stay like you are, okay?  No need to move, just let me do all the hard work.  Just relax and ride the Esper Express."  Tim hates General Fuckuppedness, it's too common and a real problem for everyone involved.  He's going to lift the gentleman, consider his options, and increase his own power use slightly.  "Alright there, sir?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Cough cough goes the guy. Cricket fishes the leash out from where it's wedged between them and gets airborne again for a good yanking angle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, he's going to be fine, with Tim's power on him.  But.  He really ought to get out of here sooner rather than later.  He'll follow the flying kitty at best speed, which is determined largely by how good a rider this guy is.

Permalink Mark Unread

The guy is not fighting him or anything beyond squirming a little to get into a better position for his labored irregular breaths.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cricket is definitely acting like he's in a hurry, which means lots of shapeshifting mountains and less getting distracted by knife-murdering. Here's the mountain with the portal on it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aww, Cricket cares!  Sort of.  In his own misanthropic way.  Tim's going to have to suffer the flying corkscrews of misfortune with patience and grace and superpowers, given that Cricket isn't thinning the swarm out.  But he's fine, he's functionally unstabbable.  "Ready to land on me again, Cricket?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Yup here is a shouldercat.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aww, he's fluffy.  He doesn't dilly-dally this time, though.  He pops through and falls -

Permalink Mark Unread

"We've got your problem patient here!  He's got, uh, circulatory issues, he's not oriented - " Tim hands the poor guy off and gives as thorough a report as possible.  Which isn't really much.  "He looks bad and his breathing right and I think he's deoxygenated.  My power keeps fixing little bits of damage all over, which I think is oxy-dep but that's guesswork, I'm not Uisa.  I've also got him augmented, right now, so don't provoke him."  Someday I'll be as good as her at diagnostics, that part I can improve on.

Permalink Mark Unread

There is an ambulance waiting! The paramedics are happy to take over with the guy, who was kidnapped direct out of an ER.

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent.  He'll send them off, and then take a few minutes to note down his impressions of what was wrong, then task Bill with getting the information where it needs to go.  How many more victims are there?  He could maybe use a break, he burned twice as much backlash on Circulatory Fuckuppedness Guy as on Florence.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We estimate another six."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've spotted six, but could have missed some. Do you have holograms of them?" Cricket asks innocently.

Permalink Mark Unread

The guy groans and gets pictures.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Haven't seen that guy, and saw one teenage girl you don't have listed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If we don't have reason to believe they're moving around, it might make sense to leave me at the portal and let Cricket get the victims on his own.  Uh, if you think that's a good idea, Cricket?"  Maybe Summer would be willing to come in, too, but maybe not.  It'd probably be backlash-neutral with her around.

Permalink Mark Unread

"They looked like they were staying put. But it will only work if they can climb mountains and are not too racist. For most people even doing one of those is too hard."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tim heaves a sigh.  Do not alienate the monster cat.  "Yeah, it'd be too easy if vics were sensible.  I think I'd like a break, if there's no other reason for urgency than the usual."  Maybe if I continue to not alienate Cricket, I'll get to pet him in 4D.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Suit yourself." He finds a friendly looking standard issue lawn chair and curls up in it with his wings folded neatly. Zzz. Cats don't need guiding but do need sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

Summer is in the tent she picked out earlier, with a box full of neatly lined up pizza crusts beside her. "Hey there. I have dedicated the last while of squashing my stressball to you, c'mere," she says. "I was expecting you to go longer, are there like zillions of knives in there?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, Summer.  There are so many knives in there, but knives aren't a problem.  The real problem was the last guy, he got taken out of a hospital.  Had to hustle."  He strips out of his vest and shirt, then strips down to his shorts and cuddles up.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh man, what a rude dungeon. Don't people in the hospital have enough to deal with?" She snuggles with one arm free for her miniature cheesecake assortment. "Do you want one of these, they're pretty good but one of them is frangipane flavored and I'm not into it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, I'll try it."  Aah?  He can't possibly feed himself, he has guiding to do!

Permalink Mark Unread

She pops it into his mouth; it's bite sized and almondy. "How's the cat, is he warming up to you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nomf.  Well, he's not going to be blaring this at the top of his lungs, but he probably doesn't need to Esper Whisper, either.  "He's...kind of a huge asshole.  But he's also focused on the mission, which I like.  And he's, uh.  People don't know how to act around him, which.  Is fair.  But some of them are also assholes to him, which isn't."

Permalink Mark Unread

"People are assholes to him? Like, before he starts it? But he's so cute..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I mean, he's adorable.  But there was this one guy who didn't know if Cricket would recognize a photograph in 4D, wouldn't take correction, and then kept talking about Cricket like he wasn't there.  Which would have made sense if Cricket were an actual cat instead of just dungeon magic made in the shape of a cat."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Am I not supposed to call him a cat, is that offensive?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have no idea."  He thinks about it for a second, then shrugs.  "Traceless called him 'kitty', so it's probably fine?  But - the guy was acting like Cricket just couldn't possibly be as smart as a human."  He shrugs against Summer's ribs.  "He probably didn't mean to be an asshole, but.  He was anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

Summer eats her passionfruit cheesecake bite thoughtfully. "Probably random people shouldn't call him kitty even if we can call him a cat."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, probably.  Anyway, I think I like him?  He's pretty competent, and if he's tetchy, well, so be it.  Lot of people are.  And I think he cares, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not a whole lot of other reason to do dungeons. Well, I guess money, maybe he wants money."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ehhh.  I don't...maybe?  I think - most people are good, and you can tell because of espers, right?  There's no way to become an esper except to get lucky, it's just random people.  And so many of us do dungeons and guide and generally do useful stuff.  But, I asked Bill for the math once.  Even D-rank espers can afford to retire after a year or two, and S-rank healers can retire after a few months, probably.  I think it's probably fair to call him a B or A-rank equivalent, I bet he could have retired by now if he really wanted to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's like ten years old or so, did you know? I looked him up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I looked at Traceless' blog at one point when I was at the clinic, he responded to my comment and everything.  Didn't remember it, but.  It's not like I'm anyone special.  I bet he wouldn't have to run any dungeons if he didn't want to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He could just have a normal number of jobs for a cat... though maybe he likes being 4D? And that's dungeons only."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, working cats are a thing, in barns or whatever.  But - in the dungeon, when it was clear that there was someone injured, he really hustled us in and out.  Not that we were slacking before, but.  I think he does care, in his own cranky way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That’s sweet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you'd know sweet, hm?"  Tim props himself up enough to grin down at Summer, then leeeaaans over to swipe a piece of whatever cheesecake's closest.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I’m the expert. Was that my coconut one? Harsh. I'll have to get coconut boba to compensate."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was pretty good, too.  Delicious."  As if she isn't just going to eat another one.  I can't imagine how much she has to eat with that backlash.  "What's been your favorite so far?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think in this batch the best was the raspberry white chocolate."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Usually a good flavor."  A little too sweet for me, but.  She's the one who needs eight thousand calories a day, can't fault her for doing it efficiently.  "D'you mind picking something good for me in an hour or two?  You always have the best picks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can do, I've got recommendations for NYC locked and loaded."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tim grins.  "You're the best food guide I've ever had."  He sets himself an alarm for twenty-eight minutes and catnaps, inspired by Cricket's shining example.  One of the upsides of his power backlash is his ability to fall asleep almost anywhere.

Permalink Mark Unread

And then he's back in action!  Is Cricket still claiming that DRT lawnchair as a throne?

Permalink Mark Unread

Zzzzzz.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, shit.  It's illegal to wake up a sleeping cat, his partner warned him.  He'll...outsource his decisionmaking process, he doesn't have to be smart enough to figure out the right choice.  He just has to know who already knows the right choice.

Good morning, Traceless.  What's the best way to wake up Cricket?

Permalink Mark Unread

Ring ring.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh shit that's going to wake up the cat.  Tim skedaddles, relatively quietly, and answers.  "Hello?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey I am presently too backlashed to read and don't know what you said, is everything okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, yessir."  Man that's such an awful backlash, I need to remember to check what it is again.  "Uh, I just wanted to know the best way to, uh.  Wake up Cricket."  Without pissing off the dungeon monster cat who can leave me trapped in 4D space with zero ability for me to ever escape.

... maybe I should have thought more about this whole thing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can call him if you don't want to just holler?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If he won't be, uh.  Irritated?  I can wake him up, just.  I've never worked with, uh.  Him.  Or anything like him before.  And he's impossible to replace, I'd hate to make him unwilling to run dungeons because I annoyed him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He might at worst blacklist you as an individual, and you are free to do the reverse if he's stressing you out, you wouldn't be the first - but he's not specifically touchy about being woken up while he's at a dungeon. He needs more sleep than a human but it can be broken up smaller, it's like his equivalent of a guiding break. He sleeps soundly so you'll have to raise your voice a bit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nossir, he's been great.  I guess I was being kind of st-silly," Tim corrects himself.  Can't say that anymore!  Even if it's probably true no, it's not true, it's not impossible that he'd stop running dungeons because of one esper, it just hasn't happened yet.

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's a very good kitty deep down. Do you want me to call him?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nossir, I've got this.  Thank you very much for your time.  Um, d'you need to call someone else before we hang up?"  Loneliness!  That was his backlash, I remember now.  Okay, that explains the phone calls.  If not the illiteracy.  I'll check his blog in a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would appreciate the overlap! If you've always wanted to be introduced to Doc Shoeswala the dungeon physicist now's your chance." Ring ring.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think I did, thank you."  Tim chuckles sensibly, waits for the two of them to get to chitchatting, then pads over to Cricket.  His instinct is to get down on Cricket's level, but that's a silly instinct and instead he'll stand like a civilized human being.  "Uh, Cricket?"  He starts softly, but will get gradually louder.

Permalink Mark Unread

It requires, not quite yelling, but being pretty loud, before Cricket yawns awake. "You and whatsherface done in the tent?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yessir.  Ready whenever you are."  He's got his dungeoneering outfit, although he's chosen to discard certain elements of it.  There's no need for a bulletproof plate when there are no threats on the scale of a bullet and also they're stabbing him internally half the time anyway.  Similarly, the guns are gone.  The only dedicated weapons left are the core detonation charges.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cricket stretches and then takes off for the scaffolding where there's a pile of dead knives. He lands well away from them. "Slob."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tim is moderately confused until he gets to the top of the scaffolding, then scowls.  "Yeah, that's a trip hazard."  And with these final words, he cheats a little and leaps for the portal.  As usual, he is poked ineffectually.  And as usual, he begins the mosquito/knife-swatting dance of his people.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a laceration hazard. They're knives and they didn't fold up when you killed them. If you're too polite to somebody who wants to walk on their own, they will shoulder out of the portal before you and they will step on one without your power on and get tetanus," says Cricket as he follows, "and it'll be all your fault. I'm flinging mine into the bushes where you wouldn't walk anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

I can just heal them and it’ll be like nothing ever happened that is not a reasonable solution. “Good point.  D’you mind popping back out for a second and asking someone to get a dustpan?  I wanted to save them in case they’re crazy good dungeon materials for…something.”

I should have just told someone to clean up the knife monster corpses.  I assumed someone would.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uuuuugh finnnnne," says Cricket, and he steps out of the dungeon for a moment and is back a moment later. "Anyone's guess if they'll do what I say purely because it's an obvious good idea, of course," he mutters. "You should have a cardboard box or something on the next run. They'll poke through a bag and you're mangling them too much to fold."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yessir, that's a good idea.  I had assumed someone would clean it up, but.  Apparently nobody wants to touch a box of dead dungeon sharps.  Anyway.  I'll follow you wherever you lead me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"This" diediedie pocketknife "way." In they go.

Permalink Mark Unread

That way they go!  He's getting oddly used to being led around on a leash by a talking dungeon cat.  He had been meaning to go for a hike for a little while, and this definitely qualifies.  The scenery is bleakly beautiful, too.  It's a shame he's going to kill this dungeon for being a kidnapping little knife-happy shit.

Permalink Mark Unread

They can rescue this chatty mom who has been keeping her neighboring victims company and strongly feels they should go get Rhonda next after her and who wants to know if they have news about her kids and who can be shut up with a water bottle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tim will cheerfully give her a water bottle.  He doesn't mind chit-chatting, but they're on a schedule today.  While she's distracted, he'll check with Cricket.  "D'you think it's worth getting multiple vics before we head back?  Or do they only sound like they're closeby?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"HEY WHICH ONE OF YOU IS RHONDA, WAVE YOUR ARM IF YOU'RE RHONDA," Cricket calls, looking around. "...Yeah, she looks like she can walk and isn't far out of the way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay.  Let's grab her and hit the road, buffing four people like this isn't much more expensive than three.  C'mon, ma'am, you can tell me about your kids while we hike?"  That usually gets them distracted from the whole kidnapping thing.

Permalink Mark Unread

She will tell him about her kids! They know that if her dungeon alarm goes off they are supposed to wait for their aunt to come get them but she got taken in the middle of the night and is not sure if they will have a good day at school if the alarm woke them up. Rhonda joins the party and they can make their way back with minimum sliding (since the vics don't have leashes it's kind of a pain in the neck to shove them around). They need help on the steep sections but are game to just climb when they can.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tim can and will pick up two people simultaneously should this prove necessary or fun and can be pulled around on a leash while this happens!  At this point, being ineffectually stabbed is kind of boring.  He's happy to walk his charges through minor rock climbing, as long as they go first so he can catch them if there's a problem.  And because if he's near them, the knives might spook 'em.  Knives might not like victims, but they like him just fine, unfortunately.

But aside from being 4D, this honestly isn't a bad dungeon.  He feels like it should be a B-rank, but he doesn't make the rules.

Permalink Mark Unread

When they come out somebody has collected the ejected monster corpses into a metal wastebasket.

Permalink Mark Unread

Great, fantastic.  "Glad they listened to you."  Is there, by any chance, a spare wastebasket he can bring into the dungeon?  He's sure that there's going to be more knife corpses, and maybe they'll even be useful for something good someday.  Maybe he'll swipe one and put it on display the MRCRF.

Permalink Mark Unread

No one has anticipated his need for a spare wastebasket.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, dump the metal wastebasket into a cardboard box and give him the metal one.  Or give him the cardboard box.

I wish Bill ran this joint.  He solves problems like it’s his job.  Because it is.

Permalink Mark Unread

He can have a cardboard box!

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, he’d love something sturdier than a cardboard box, but sure.  Fine.  Whatever.  Leave it at the entrance, he’ll fill it later.

He can make another run in and wait for Cricket.  Once Cricket’s in, he’ll follow Cricket wherever Cricket thinks is best.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cricket picks another vic and leads him on another hike. The knives keep coming and they don't stop coming. Collectively. Individual ones are quite stoppable.

Permalink Mark Unread

Individual knives are very stoppable and not, actually, noteworthy except insofar as a dungeon feature is notable.  He hasn't stopped blinking about the knives, but that's about the level of response they get now.

... Hm.  His leash is starting to fray a bit after one confused beetleknife clipped it on the approach.  Not badly, but he'll take a moment to put a knot in that section so it's hopefully more resilient to flying beetleknives.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cricket observes this without comment. Then he cranes his neck into the fourth dimension so his head disappears, for a better look, and chooses a path around some thorny plants. No point courting more clothing damage than necessary.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tim notices, and smiles about it!  More evidence that Cricket is actually thoughtful!  It's not, actually, proof that Cricket likes him, it's just proof that Cricket is exhibiting common decency toward him.  But it's weight on the scale.

Permalink Mark Unread

The next victim is catching a little sleep but very lightly; he sits up when they're close and is capable of walking. "I hiked around, when I first showed up here, in case it was one you can just leave. I was in one you could just leave, back in 2022. But I didn't see it anywhere, or any other people..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a 4D one!  You can just walk out, if you have the best 4D navigator in the world available."  And if you're not being swarmed by 4D knives.  "There are folks around, but they're on different, uh, slices of the dungeon.  Here, have a granola bar or two, take your pick but the peanut butter got opened by a knife a few minutes ago."  Once the vic is fed and watered, he'll happily head to the next victim or the exit, as his navigator deems fit.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The knives are probably pretty sanitary, I'll take the peanut butter. How does the winged cat get you to another... slice...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"His name's Cricket, and he was originally from a dungeon  Look at his fur, like, really look at it for a second.  See how it's kinda glitching out?  It's not like that normally.  Super cool, right?"  Peanut butter granola bar has been distributed.

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is normal," Cricket counters. "It is merely not like this most of the time."

"Holy cow, he talks."

"Anyway the answer to your question is that I am going to shove you." Cricket disappears and shoving ensues. He does Tim next.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, sorry, Cricket.  I'm not used to it yet."  Tim is going to pretend that the shoving never happened, and if it did happen it was completely normal and unremarkable anyway.  Emotions are mildly contagious, and he wants calm to be the only contagion he's spreading.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cricket leads them on a hike that is all on the portal layer, since this guy is up to it. He is beginning to attempt, while they catch up to him on steep sections, to refine a technique for taking a knife intact. He doesn't have it down yet.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, he had planned on just grabbing a knife and putting it in a box.  But since the best the local DRT can scare up is a cardboard box, perhaps he had best leave knife-grabbing to the professional kitty.  He's also starting to wonder how to find the core, if the answer isn't "relax by the portal while Cricket does it".

Permalink Mark Unread

The thing is the knives' wings are surprisingly fragile and any level of imperviousness confers enough strength that it's a little difficult to catch one delicately. Cricket can catch a knife alive, but he wants it pristine, for the zoo, in the unlikely event it lives, or a museum if it doesn't. Also separately these things could absolutely saw their way out of cardboard. He's just practicing till the cage from Tess is available, and then he'll need a way to hold onto it in 4D to carry it through to the portal and safely tuck it away in said cage, because the cage will be three-dimensional and putting a knife in it would be like drawing a line on the floor around a normal organism, within the dungeon space.

The hiker victim hikes, and steps out.

"Do you need a break?" Cricket inquires, watching a knife hooked through the coil of the corkscrew on his claw struggle.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nossir, I'm good to go.  Do we have a plan for finding the core?" He's a little tired, but it's easy-explained by the fact that he's done hiking in an alien 4-dimensional space and at least occasionally carrying people around.  And this is his only dungeon for the day, and he'd love to put a 4D notch in his belt.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think it might be buried in a snowcap. You can help me dig when the victims are out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yessir."  In that case, he'll put in a requisition for a VERY sturdy shovel.  He doesn't generally carry one, too little benefit in most dungeons.  But he's ready for another run whenever his feline overlord is.

He's also curious why Cricket thinks it would be there but he has no desire to engage too much with Cricket, lest he offend somehow.  He hasn't received a Cricket-Determined Flaw as yet and he'd like to keep that from happening if at all possible.

Permalink Mark Unread

He hasn't asked and Cricket is being soooo professional.

Next vic is a young lady with a bad hangover who's been eating the snow. This does not seem to have poisoned her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, in the scouting world the worst to happen is you get an intestinal parasite or the runs.  In a dungeon, it'll either be terrible because the dungeons actually have some kind of trace contaminant that gives you hepatitis or it'll be fine because there's no germy ecosystem to infect you.

Either way, she's getting two water bottles.  He doesn't bother carrying any OTC painkillers, if you're in pain in a dungeon you need something faster-acting and stronger than ibuprofen.

Permalink Mark Unread

She appreciates the water bottles. "Hi kitty! Are you a trained monster? Can I pet you?" she says, in the sort of rhetorical way people sometimes say this to animals, already reaching.

Cricket disappears ana and doesn't dignify this with a response otherwise. Maybe Tim can be useful here.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep that's absolutely his cue to intercept.  "That's Cricket, he's a person and also the best 4D dungeoneer in the world."  Also your ticket out of here.  "He's doing all the work, today, I'm just here for my power."  And carrying things.  And maybe someday he'll let me pet him...

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's... obviously a monster kitty?" says the girl, between swigs of water, looking around like Cricket might just be behind something.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes'm, and he's the only reason I'm able to reach you.  This is a 4D dungeon, he can move us kata and ana.  He'll get us out of here in a jiffy."  Chivvy the Civvy before Cricket gets sick of her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ha ha, cat-a..." She is pretty amenable to following Tim around. Cricket tells him to pick her up for the leash-pulling when it comes up.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tim's here to carry people, chew bubblegum, and be pulled around by a moderate-sized monster dungeon kitty.  And he's all out of bubblegum.  She can go piggyback for a while.  Bridal-style can be...fraught.

Permalink Mark Unread

She is tolerant of the piggyback arrangement. "Do you get to pet him since he's your kitty?"

"I absolutely am not his kitty," snaps Cricket.

"OH my god he talks."

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, watching Cricket get mad at people is a little funny.  "I did say he was a person!  He, uh, lives with Traceless, the stealth esper.  He hasn't let me pet him, yet."  But hope springs eternal.

Permalink Mark Unread

"My mom says her schnauzer is a person, I didn't think you meant he talked!"

Permalink Mark Unread

“Ah, I see the confusion.  At any rate, he is a talking person, with his own opinions, and he chooses who he lets pet him.”  Keeping the subject off the nine stabs per minute he is currently receiving is an excellent idea.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wonders never cease. If he's not yours how come you're with him instead of the other esper?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, you might've noticed how I haven't gotten stabbed even a little bit?  My power gives me toughness and strength, and it lets me give other people that strength and toughness.  I'm just here to make sure Cricket stays safe."  Which is mildly stressful but I can deal with it.  "He's doing all the real work."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know they look sharp but they haven't hurt me at all..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, they like you just fine, it's people like me and Cricket they hate."  Do not say 'playing with their food'...  "Dungeons don't usually hurt the people they kidnap, as long as we get you out."  Before you vanish forever to a mountain hell dimension full of flying knives forever.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The ones you hear about all hurt people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, they'd be hurting me if they could.  Good thing this isn't one of the really scary dungeons, eh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It could be worse. But my brother was in one that was like, a concert. He needed to go to the doctor about his ears after but he said the music actually kind of kicked ass."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh, that would make a good story!  What kind of music was it, rock?  Or classical at ninety-eight decibels?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kinda techno-y."

Permalink Mark Unread

He gives a hum of acknowledgement, which is punctuated by a slap to the back of his head where a knife was trying to drill him.  "Makes sense, techno's usually pretty loud."  Sounds worse than flying knives.  For me, anyway.

Permalink Mark Unread

"AAAH that was RIGHT by my face man."

Permalink Mark Unread

Whoops.  "Sorry, it's like mosquito season around here.  But with knives."  That actually could have been bad.  How about his backpack gets a splash of power, and he can work on catching and crushing knives instead of slapping them.

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't appear to notice. "Are you catching all of them, how are they not ever nicking you -?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's my power.  You could hit me with a truck and I'd walk away just fine.  Same with Cricket, right now, since I'm giving it to him."  To demonstrate, he grabs a knife from the air, crumples it, and demonstratively pokes himself in the bicep a few times.  "Doesn't extend to my equipment, sadly, but.  It's still a pretty nice power."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wasn’t going to ask about your clothes but I don’t think Goodwill will take them after this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, they're pretty much done for.  I get sent to dungeons with lots of like, ambient hazards, but my power only works on people.  So I have to have a lot of spares back at the portal.  I'm going to have to change next time I take a break."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ohohoho," she says, like she has read fanfictions about what espers do on breaks.

Permalink Mark Unread

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.  Well, she would've been right a few months ago.  Tim does not, actually, have any way to positively contribute to this conversation.  If he denies it, she won't believe him.  If he says 'no comment', she'll take it as an admission of guilt fuckin'.  It is entirely possible that a different human being would be able to deflect this indecorous chortling in a graceful manner.

But Tim's odds of flying are significantly better than his odds of navigating this particular social jungle.

Permalink Mark Unread

She does not follow up with any more indecorous chortling/questions/etc., at least. She seems to think it's cool when the mountains slide through different shapes when they're pulled about, and walks out of the portal with a "thank you!"

Permalink Mark Unread

He gives her a two-finger salute.  "You're very welcome!"  He then turns to the navigator kitty.  "I should have another few runs like that in me, these aren't too bad at all.  How many more vics do we have?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If I've seen them all, eight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, call it forty minutes a vic...that's another three hours, minimum.  And then we want to find the core.  Do you need a break at all?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I’ll nap when you take breaks. I might want you to order me sashimi. I will pay for it, phones are just not designed for cats."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yessir, can do.  I should be able to do another two or three runs, then I might want to take a nap."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay." He picks the next direction. "Might be able to get two on this route if neither needs to be carried."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's a lot easier on me, if you can arrange it."  He's being considerate, I think!  More evidence he might like me.  Or at least not hate me.

Permalink Mark Unread

They’ve got an older lady who doesn’t speak English, only Javanese, but she’s really happy to see Tim!

Permalink Mark Unread

Tim will attempt Spanish and French and extremely halting American Sign Language, but he can get by with pantomime if necessary.  And if she doesn't speak English, it means that Cricket won't get offended, probably.

Permalink Mark Unread

None of those is Javanese! Pantomime suffices to get her following. She's pretty spry for how grey her hair is and doesn't seem threatening enough to Cricket that he won't shove her separately from Tim so she needn't be carried.

The other vic on the same mountain (a bit kata and around the other side) is a guy in his thirties. He heard Tim speaking Spanish and greets them in that rather than English without clarifying whether English would also work for him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tim's happy to speak Spanish!  He grew up only ever speaking Spanish at home, it's nice to feel a little nostalgic for a moment.  He might find Tim's accent a touch odd, but they're mutually intelligible enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

And this guy can also walk and climb so they can go out in a batch to the portal! And also Cricket doesn't speak Spanish and cannot be offended when the guy asks how expensive he was!

Permalink Mark Unread

Tim advises him, in Spanish, that the kitty is a person and makes more money in a month than Tim and his partners make in a year.  And to go relax, he’s earned it after all the time spent trudging through the liminal mountains.

(Is he exaggerating for effect?  Possibly.  Will he admit it?  Probably not)

Permalink Mark Unread

When Tim goes to take a break, Cricket announces that he wants eight ounces of sake and two ounces of bluefin from a specific place in Brooklyn delivered and that Tim can send Tess an invoice for it, and then curls up on his lawnchair to catch some Z's.

Permalink Mark Unread

Summer's waiting in the tent. She has a blue cheese burger and onion rings and jalapeno poppers now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tim doesn't outsource everything to Bill.  He's perfectly competent to order a specific thing from a specific place according to specific instructions.  "Hey, Summer.  How's it all going?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The Hawks lost. Otherwise fine. You holding up okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Li'l tired, but I'm doing okay.  I've never seen so many knives in my life, though."  After the ritual Partial Undressing, he'd like to curl around Summer from behind.  "The 4D, uh, slides are really something, too.  Never seen anything like it in my life."

Permalink Mark Unread

Pet pet. "I heard at a mixer once it makes some people queasy."

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, no.  Cozy pets.  His only weakness.  "Yeah, I can see it.  This dungeon wasn't too bad, but it's pretty weird.  My power thinks Cricket's about three inches away from me, but my eyes know that's not the case."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wild! Is that... a 4D thing somehow...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess?  I don't really know, I thought it was a Cricket thing at first, but then another victim had the same thing happen.  Maybe it's just this dungeon, or if we're really lucky it'll be all 4D dungeons."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How did a vic have the same thing happen?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Like, they all feel close to me?  I don't really know how to explain it - I could tell they were near even if they weren't."  He stifles a yawn in Summer's shoulderblade.  "Scuse me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can nap." Pet pet.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mmm...m'kay.  Just for a little bit."  He dozes off after a few minutes with an arm over Summer's midsection.  He does wriggle around in his sleep a bit.  Hopefully Summer doesn't mind having her partner draped all over her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not at all. Feels cozy and nourishing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then in about an hour, Tim will wake up with an arm wrapped over Summer's sternum, a leg draped over her waist and thigh, and his head resting on her shoulder.  He's perfectly content to revel in the doubled alertness of "Not backlashed anymore!" and "Just woke up from a nap after hours of moderately-hard labor!".

He's feeling pretty good about his life choices right now.

Permalink Mark Unread

She’s let her backlash go down with his so she has not yet replaced her takeout and is sipping water instead. "Next run your last?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, hope so.  We've got almost everyone out, I think, unless we find another couple people Cricket missed.  Now we just have to find the core and go home, the looters can do what they do best."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is there anything good in there?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He chuckles into the crook of Summer's neck.  "Well, if you ever wanted a pocketknife...But I don't really know, apart from those.  They try to grab as much as they can, you never know what'll be the next marble."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, would one work as a pocketknife for real, that would actually rule."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think they're a little big for it.  I'll grab one for you, if you want, there's thousands of them.  It'll be at least a little squished, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Long as it still folds up and is still sharp where it's supposed to be."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, they're pretty sharp, alright," Tim grumbles for a moment.  Then he sighs.  "No, - they're not even that dangerous, to me.  It's just a lot to hold that much backlash constantly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...would it make sense for me to go with you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Tim's initial thought is 'Sure, why not?' but he actually should not go off half-cocked.  "Um - maybe?  It's not like it's a hard dungeon or anything, and it's pretty safe as long as nothing happens to me or Cricket.  But you'd be constantly trusting me and Cricket with your life, and I don't," Tim pauses, his words slowing as he visibly thinks about the question.  "It's a lot to trust me with, and Cricket.  I can do it, don't get me wrong, but - it is lot for you to trust me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...yeah, I almost thought 'if something did happen the next team would have one more rescue to do' but the dungeon would, like, notice, that, I'm not one of its victims."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah.  There really isn't a safety net, just me."  Tim is okay with taking that risk, but he trusts his power the way he trusts his legs: they've never failed him unless he abused them.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess the Dwarves do this all the time though?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah.  It's kinda funny, my power - it's like it wants me to take five Joe Randoms and turn 'em all into espers.  A lot of my 'solo clears' are actually me and three Dwarves.  The system marks them as 'support personnel'."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Whereas I am an esper but not really that kind."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're the cuddly kind.  I'd've had to give up on this one halfway through, without you around."  He pats her side, where his arm is draped.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am very useful and look cute doing it! It sounds kind of fun to hike around in the dungeon with you but maybe I should try it for the first time where if there's a problem I have to run away instead of one where if there's a problem I die."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Out to sabotage my record for 'solo' clears, huh?  I see how it is."  Tim chuckles a little bit.  "I'd be happy to have you along in some other dungeon, whenever you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If there's a cotton candy dungeon I will have great camo."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you ever wind up having kids, you're gonna have to explain why other people are eating Maman's hair."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I don't think I'm gonna do that but maybe I'll explain it to nieces and nephews someday."

Permalink Mark Unread

He winces a little bit, wracks his brain for a way to gracefully change the topic, and fails to find one.  "Ah, sorry.  Not my business, really."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If I were going to it would be job relevant, I couldn't rack up backlash till they were born!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, okay, she's not mad about it.  That's a relief.  "You know what I mean, though, it's not like I get a vote on it."  Normally he might give her a gentle elbow, but to do that he'd have to first draw back from her, and he's perfectly content where he is.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is quite true." Her sisters might tease her, but he's obviously getting somewhere with Menhir and Summer is just a cuddly co-worker and he's really a little too young for her though the age gap might seem smaller in like five years.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tim, if pressed, would say that Menhir is also just a cuddly coworker!  But.  Who knows what the future may bring?  "Right.  So, whatever happens, I gotcha.  Okay?"  Conversational minefield: navigated!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm-hm!"

Permalink Mark Unread

It's not long before he's guided down to nearly zero.  He's maybe a little mundanely tired, but he's a big boy and if being a little tired was enough to stop him, he wouldn't have made it this far in life.  He wolfs down the meal Summer picked out for him (mushroom bacon/hamburger, well-done on account of the bacon mixed in with the ground beef and a side of loaded fries), forwards the invoice for Cricket's sake salmon and sashimi to Bill, and then approaches Cricket.

"Cricket?"  He's pretty sure this was about the volume level from last time, and now he's pretty sure that Cricket won't hate him forever.  It's much less stressful now that he has a script!

Permalink Mark Unread

YAAAAAWN "Hello."

Permalink Mark Unread

That's one big yawn.  "Hi.  Feeling ready for the last run?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is my fish here yet?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did it...not...Sorry, sir, one second."  Man, I appreciate Bill more and more every time I have to accomplish something.  A few moments of poking at the app reveals that the sushi was delivered ten minutes ago.  Delivery photo...  "Looks like it got delivered but I guess the support team somehow didn't pass it on to you.  I can grab it for you if you give me a minute."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll eat fast."

Permalink Mark Unread

It doesn’t take him long to find the sushi.  It transpires that it was put in a cooler, to prevent it from spoiling.  He brings the fish back, and opens the tray for Cricket.  “Where would you like it, sir?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right there is fine."

Nomnomnomnomnom. He has a bit of the pickled ginger in between the bluefin and the salmon. When the fish is all gone he stretches his wings and is ready to go again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Holy shit, watching a cat eat sushi is oddly adorable?  It's objectively weird, but.  For once Cricket doesn't seem obviously grumpy?  And this time he'd like to plan out the escapades before entering the Knife Dimension.  "How do we want to search for the core?  You said you thought it'd be at a peak, right?"  It's weird standing up while watching a kitty eat, so instead he sits on the ground.  It's comfy and he doesn't want to bother with getting a chair.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Buried in the snow. It'd explain why I can't see it, I would have spotted it by now if it were just lying around. I can't rule out that it's embedded in a mountain but that'd be unusually tricky."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That makes sense.  This isn't going to be great, unless your fur is better against snow than it looks.  I won't be able to keep a parka intact."  This is why every dungeon should have a real sensor.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm Canadian," says Cricket. Big stretch.

Permalink Mark Unread

And I'm from Vermont, but I still get frostbite just the same.  I just heal it off after.  "Yessir.  Do you want to scout the mountaintops solo and call me once you've found the core, or..?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I won’t be able to shift as much snow as you. Don’t be lazy."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tim hums an acknowledgment, then thinks about it because he's lazy he really doesn't want to shovel snow off mountaintops looking for a core that may or may not even be there.  This is going to suck.

Alternatives!

Recruit Dwarves: costs teleport budget or takes hours.  Probably not great.

Scanner?  Not likely, the knives might stab it.

Actually...  "They went after you, but not our radios.  Do they mostly ignore our equipment?  Maybe we can get an ultrasonic scanner or something, on a stick so the knives don't go after it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think they only incidentally attack objects. I don't know if a scanner like that would work but we can try one if you get one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I want to try it, I don't want to spend the next few hours shoveling snow off mountains.  I will if I have to, but..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So what are you waiting for?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just to see if you had any other good ideas."  Okay, he's a little abrasive.  I can still work with this, though.  He'll flag down a coordinator and request something that can detect objects through snow, dungeon-rated duct tape, and a three-foot stick.  And a solid all-metal snowshovel.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, these aren't terribly unusual requests.  The snowshovel only takes a few minutes, but the scanner will take some time.  They'll grab it when they're done getting victims.  Once more into the portal with them!

Permalink Mark Unread

Cricket demands an electric blanket as part of the same order and then flaps in after.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shoot.  I should have asked for one, too.  Oh well, I'll just have to suffer with Summer.  Heh.  'Summer'.  "I'll follow you, sir."  Hopefully not up a mountain that I have to shovel by hand.  Ugggghhh.

Swat and crush and smash and slap and -

Permalink Mark Unread

Bite and claw and pounce and swat, yes. Here is a guy who managed to get kidnapped with a book on him but started hollering about what was taking so long when he finished it. Or at least, Tim can hear such a guy. Because of the hollering. Cricket's choice of next escort out is instead this lady over here.

Permalink Mark Unread

As delightfully petty as this is, Tim would really rather get this shit over with so he can finish snowshoveling at least one mountain and go home to his other partner.  If it's not too far away, Tim would prefer to get Hollering Guy as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

"He’s that way. Tragically."

Permalink Mark Unread

"WE'LL BE WITH YOU SHORTLY, SIR.  Won't be too long, Cricket."  Tim has the urge to stroke Cricket's tail in sympathy, but Cricket is currently having far too much fun decimating the local knife population.  Soon enough, they'll be an endangered species.

Permalink Mark Unread

He catches one with a claw neatly through the loop of its scissor right when they get the lady through the portal. "I want to get this alive into its box. I will sit on you again so it can’t stab me on the way." Shoulder cat.

Permalink Mark Unread

Winged shoulder kitty!!!!  "Yessir."  Tim is extremely pleased to have Cricket willing to climb his shoulder.  Perhaps Cricket will deign to permit petting at some point, but he'll find out later.  Three, two, one - jump through the portal, shoulder kitty and shoulder kitty's knife in tow.

Can the knife try to fly outside of 4D?  It won't succeed, not with Cricket holding onto it with the strength of approximately seventy cats.  But it might try.

Permalink Mark Unread

It tries! It looks pretty pathetic. Cricket gets it into the modified lobster trap Tess provided and locks it in. "We have to put that back if we can't find the core but they're hard enough to catch without smashing that I wanted to keep this one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yessir, makes sense."  Tim would feel significantly worse for the pathetic little flopping knife if he hadn't spent four of the last six hours getting stabbed by its bladed compatriots.  "I'm glad you got to catch a good one."  And that you didn't take a week to learn how to use my power without breaking everything near you.  And back through for Yellin' Fella.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cricket will begrudgingly find a route that includes Yellin' Fella and his nearest neighbor.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tim is deeply appreciative of Cricket's ability to get multiple people on one route, and will express this.  How's Yellin' Fella doing, still hooting and hollering?

Permalink Mark Unread

Calms right down when he sees Tim. "There you are! You've been coming and going getting everybody under the sun but me, why's that, huh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry, sir.  It's a 4D dungeon.  Navigating this thing is a real bear.  Right, Cricket?"  Hopefully Cricket gets the hint that they should do a lot of sliding so he at least gets a nice show, or possibly seasickness.  Dimensionsickness?

Permalink Mark Unread

"Humans have trouble with it." Guy gets a shove. Tim too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Getting shoved kata and ana is pretty disorienting.  He doesn't really get much nausea, especially after the esper glowup.  But it's so startling to see mountains change while you're actively looking at them.

But his is not to wonder why, his is but to walk victims out of dungeons.  While being stabbed seven times per minute.

Permalink Mark Unread

Down to six now. They’ve dented the swarm literally at all.

Nearest neighbor needs to be carried; she wasn't making a fuss about it so Cricket didn't notice but she twisted her ankle trying to get down to the warmer part of the dungeon below the snowcaps.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well.  That's not great.  He does some quick math and decides he can afford to be a little wasteful in the name of recovery.  He'll give her a rundown on what exactly is wrong with her ankle, with the advice that she relay his rundown to the medics on staff.  He thinks she'll be having issues for 3-5 days, maybe a little less.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're a healer? I thought healers didn't do dungeons."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Only a little bit, my power works best on recent injuries.  It also gives durability and strength, so you won't be hurting yourself.  You're a bit stronger than normal, but this level isn't enough to really - " don't say be an issue Tim "- uh, make a difference.  It'd be like if you hit the gym religiously for a year."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...are you saying I should walk on the ankle now -"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can if you want to and you promise to be careful.  You've got a ligament that's strained and that's destabilizing you, and everything else is trying to compensate.  Because of the durability, you won't injure yourself any more unless you hit it with an axe or something.  But I'm happy to carry you to the portal, you're pretty light."  Also at this level of augment I could carry two of you if you didn't squirm too much.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I'd rather not try, it still hurts."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's fine.  Shouldn't be too long, now, just about fifteen minutes.  I think that should be enough to get you half a day's recovery time.  I'd give you more, but we still have the core to find and...four more victims, I think?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. Ones who aren't yelling."

"Hey, I've been here a long time too, cat."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tim interrupts, a clear edge in his voice, "Not for much longer, you won't be."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Whoa, hey," says Twisted Ankle, "it'll all be fine all around, right, this isn't one of the bad ones."

"Any dungeon you need an esper for is bad," says Yellin' Fella.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Could be a lot worse, though, I read about one online where the dungeon keeps making you think you're escaping, but you're just moving to a different section of the dungeon.  This one's not so bad if you can't be stabbed and have the world's best 4D navigator."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aren't there 4D espers?" says Yellin' Fella.

"There are espers whose powers work omnidirectionally, including sensors. They need guiding time and they're not very good at interpreting what they see," says Cricket. "And the sensors usually don't double as mobility and the mobility usually don't double as sensors."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Think of it like this, it's the difference between a picture and a movie.  We see pictures, Cricket sees the movie."  Thank you for the comparison before, Cricket, it's a great one.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cricket did not make that analogy and would in fact call this one a stupid thing to say but he's being professional. He leads them all the rest of the way to the portal where Twisted Ankle can be handed off to medics and Yellin' Fella can never impose himself on their ears again.

Once more into the breach.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tim would argue, were he aware of the narration, that the comparison of a photo to a hologram is close enough to being the same, and that it's a great analogy.  Except for his preexisting commitment to Not Piss Off The Kitty.  Because of that commitment, he's not willing to argue with Cricket for anything short of trying to save someone's life, even in a narrative aside.

Once more.  He's really going to feel this one in the morning.  He only passed Stats because he was on the wrestling team, but he's incredibly resentful of the statistics that the average dungeoneer does two per day.  He's been in this thing for hours now!  And if he has to dig out every snowdrift in this forsaken mountain vale, he might have to come back tomorrow.

But he's an aspiring professional, so.  Back to it.

Dungeon check: still full of knives!

Permalink Mark Unread

It sure fucking is. Swat swat swat bite. "They really don't taste like ladybugs." Rip tear claw. Here is a patient old man who had a deck of cards in his dungeon prep kit and has been amusing himself with Solitaire.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, sir.  We'll get you out in a few minutes.  D'you think you can walk okay?"  He has to bite back the comment, 'Black six on red seven', which isn't easy.  But he does it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can walk but not climb. Arthritis in my hands," says the guy, accented but fluent. He scoops up his cards and holds out one arthritic hand for Cricket to sniff. Cricket considers this warily and then sniffs him.

Permalink Mark Unread

ARGH I should have tried that.  So much for 'he's not a cat', Bill!  "That's Cricket, he's our dungeon navigator.  He's doing all the real work, I'm just here to do heavy lifting.  I can get you down this bit, then you should be able to walk out okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Cricket leads them with two shoves to shallow the slopes and one to get around some thorny shrubbery. Solitaire Man walks but has to lean on Tim for sections with iffy footing, loose scree or dead knives scattered from their previous treks.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's not stupid so bad at analyzing cost-effectiveness that he wants to try to fix this poor guy's arthritis.  But he's tempted to.  He could do it, if he had nothing else to do with his time for two months straight.  But he does.  Solitaire Man can have as much shoulder as he wants, in lieu of dedicated healer time.

Permalink Mark Unread

And he's out. Next vic is a lady who was kidnapped in her fuzzy bathrobe and fuzzy slippers.

Permalink Mark Unread

He gives her a quick paranatural checkup to make sure she's not suffering from frostbite.  She isn't.  Honestly, this whole dungeon is warmer than it has any right to be, considering the snow peaks.  Dungeons.  It's probably not even real snow.  "Here, we'll get you out of here soon enough, you'll be warming up in just a few..."

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a substantial temperature gradient but the vics are for the most part below the snowcaps where it is nippy, not literally freezing. "You couldn't bring me some sweatpants or something?" she grouses, while Cricket pulls them wunder a rocky outcropping so they don't have to duck.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think they would have survived the trip.  The knives don't care about you, but they don't like me very much."  He gestures expansively at his current state of attire, which can be generously described as 'deshabille' and honestly described as 'raggedy'.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It’d still be an improvement!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, it won't be too long before you're out.  They have changes of pants on the other side of the portal.  Incentive to keep moving, huh?"  I can't be too upset about it, I was in pretty rough after that expedition Sara and I were on.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is the portal at least somewhere tucked away and private?" she says despairingly.

"No," says Cricket. "Scaffolding above a bodega. They didn't even stop the bodega from opening." New York City has to be more conservative about how much radius it gives low-breach-risk dungeon perimeters. Giving every dungeon a hundred feet would shut down the entire city every day.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, great.  She's about to upskirt everyone.  Tim is extremely tired of wardrobe malfunctions.  "Cricket, would you mind popping through and asking someone to throw a pair of spare pants through the portal?  I would do it, but.  I can't exactly leave you in here."  Do not ask for or comment on her size.  No matter what you guess, you will guess wrong.

Permalink Mark Unread

"If they have those why didn't you get them?" Cricket asks, with a look that makes it extremely obvious that he can see around every stitch that's left of Tim's pants and considers this an enormous burden.

Permalink Mark Unread

"At the rate this dungeon goes through gear, we'd run out of pants.  It's why I asked for them to throw it through, the knives don't care about, ah, equipment, just humans.  Mostly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fine," Cricket grumbles, and he flaps away.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you, sir," he calls after the kitty.  He's such an asshole, but he really is nice if you dig a little.  Sometimes a lot.  Hopefully it's not long before he's back?

Permalink Mark Unread

He’s back in thirty seconds having not left the dungeon. "Hey, how are you sure you’ll notice me before the knives do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"My power acts in the double-digit millisecond range and it covers healing as well as durability, if you somehow get scraped."  Also that would have been a smart question to ask six hours ago.

Permalink Mark Unread

Six hours ago Cricket was entering the dungeon directly after Tim-without-a-vic-right-there. "Will you be paying attention?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yessir.  I promise I will."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You had better."

And he flaps off again.

"Is he always like that?" whispers Bathrobe Lady.

Permalink Mark Unread

His senses are peeled for 'cat'.  It costs a little backlash, but really not much.  "Sometimes he's worse.  But he also saved a man's life, earlier today, and he's risking his life constantly in dungeons.  He's an extremely good cat."  He pauses for a second, thinking.  "I mean, the guy was having some kind of problem, and Cricket ran him an emergency kit.  Guy wouldn't have made it without Cricket.  Not just, you know.  Saving from a dungeon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do they... pay... the cat," she wonders.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I never asked him, but I'm pretty sure he makes more money in a month than I do in a year.  I have no idea what he'd use it on.  But you don't do a job like his for ten years unless you have a love of the game, somehow.  I think, probably.  It's not like a psychology textbook would really apply to him, he's unique."  Irreplaceable.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I thought all dungeon espers made about the same?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Still no Cricket.  "He's, very literally, the best in the world at 4D dungeons.  He's the Skybreaker or Lee Tae-Gun or Min Woo-Young or Flay or Uisa of 4D.  I'm extremely lucky he was willing to work with me."  And he doesn't have to cut a deal with DRT to split expenses with them in exchange for the Dwarves, or a clinic to keep up.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Who are the... are those Chinese names?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Tim's babble is basically autopilot while he waits for Cricket to show back up.  "Korean.  They've got a lot of top talent there, I guess.  Uisa's the best healer in the world, I think, Min Woo-Young, is uh."  A phenomenally good kisser.  "One of the best teleporters in the world, maybe the best.  Lee Tae-gun is some kind of cryokinetic, he's literally never failed a dungeon run and runs almost all of them solo, I read.  They rank espers from D to A over there, and they call anything that breaks the scale S-class.  Flay and Lee Tae-gun are both S-class."  Where is Cricket...This was a bad idea, I should have just given her my shirt or something...

Permalink Mark Unread

Here he is.

Permalink Mark Unread

BOOM.  Instantly, he's covered with Tim's power, slightly overkilled as usual, then throttled back juuust barely more than necessary to protect Cricket.  He waves to Cricket.  "Welcome back!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Cricket flies back to where he left them, appearing on their "layer" in midair. "There are pants inside at the portal now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you very much.  I appreciate it."  Probably we should have done this at the portal, come to think about it.  That would have been better.  Note for next time.  Surely they're almost at the portal?

Permalink Mark Unread

Up one last mini mountain and along this ridge here. Pants. The vic puts them on.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tim turns his back on her completely.  It's not like he's on the watch for threats right now.  What's the dungeon going to do, throw a knife at him?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes. (If he's counting, it takes eight knives for the vic to get the pants on, swearing to herself about the fucking drawstring.)

Permalink Mark Unread

He stopped counting a long, long time ago.  He's reached knife saturation.  Knives are no longer counted in integers, for Tim.  He counts knives as follows: One, two, many, lots, far too many.

Permalink Mark Unread

Many knives later the vic is out!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just two more!"  He's feeling pretty good about this.  Even if they don't get the core today, saving this many people is a good day's work.  Delicious, delicious endorphins surge through him as the vic exits the portal.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cricket sets out, then - turns his head and changes direction. "That one was sitting up and is lying down now. Maybe napping maybe not."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yessir.  Got it."  He - actually doesn't know that he feels comfortable jogging, on this path.  He'll at least hotfoot it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cricket gets out ahead of him. "HEY. ARE YOU ASLEEP OR SICK?"

"Hwha?" says a faint voice.

Permalink Mark Unread

Once he actually can see the victim, he envelops the vic in his power.  Just enough for diagnostics.  How's the patient, Doc?

Permalink Mark Unread

The patient is really tired with pretty low blood sugar and not handling the chill that well but not dying or anything. Probably shouldn't try to climb a mountain even though it's a dwarf mountain, even after a granola bar.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tim can't tell determine blood sugar with his power, but he can recognize someone who's gassed out.  He's going to award the patient two of his last four granola bars and a miraculously-unpunctured water bottle, then see how the patient feels about a piggyback.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does a piggyback mean he can slump onto Tim's shoulder and be mostly dead weight?

Permalink Mark Unread

If he's not actively screaming or kicking, Tim doesn't care.  Well, he cares a little, he has to spare a bit of power in case of errant knives.  But aside from that, it's just another day walking through a cloud of Far Too Many Knives.

... This path is actually pretty treacherous.  He opts to skip parts of it via superstrength-assisted leap.  Hopefully the vic is too asleep for that.

Permalink Mark Unread

He is awake enough to make a terrified moaning noise!

Permalink Mark Unread

Shoot.  I hoped he'd be asleep for this bit.  "Sorry, sir, we're almost there.  Don't want to walk down that slope.  You're alright, I've got you..."  He'll keep up a meaningless stream of Reassuring Noises until the poor fella relaxes or they get to the portal, whichever comes first.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cricket has to shove him a few times but the vic has his eyes closed and barely reacts to that part, at least.

Permalink Mark Unread

Small mercies.  Very small, at that.  Tim feels vaguely guilty about having napped and been fed delicious fresh-ordered food in the metaphorical(sometimes literal) lap of a very pretty girl just a few hours previously.  But Carol had been right: you can't save anybody if you pass out from low blood sugar or exhaustion.  He shoves the guilt into the back of his mind.

If his eyes aren't playing tricks on him, that's the portal coming up over the next rise.  Probably.  It's a 4D dungeon, he could be wrong.

Permalink Mark Unread

He has now traversed the bit of the dungeon with the portal in it a bunch of times and it is not a coincidence that he'd be right about this one.

Time to turn right around as soon as that guy can be got to the medics and go get the last one.

Permalink Mark Unread

About-FACE!  Forward, MARCH!  He wants to put a little pep in his step, but that would be silly to do because he still has to shovel five goddamn mountaintops for a core that may or may not be there.

... hm.  There's an idea.  "Er, Cricket?  If your wings are tired, you're welcome to my shoulder, sir.  Or I could carry you.  If you prefer."  Possibly this is a mistake but he's been doing an awful lot of work.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your publicly documented backlash is literally exhaustion, you fool."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I also have superstrength that I'm not using for anything.  It'd be like carrying a paperback.  Offer's open, take it if you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

Cricket lands on his shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yessssssssss!!!!  Shoulderwingcat!!!  He WINS this dungeon!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

The last victim can walk and even climb but has some cuts on his hands from having tried to catch a knife a couple hours back. It objected. Cricket rolls his eyes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, he can have just a little bit of bonus recovery.  Just a smidge, in case of accidents or rolled ankles.  Tim privately is of the opinion that Cricket's disdain is somewhat cute but Cricket would probably be singing a different tune if he weren't functionally invulnerable to knives.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cricket would not be here if he weren't functionally invulnerable to knives. The victims were getting completely ignored by the knives and this guy tried to grab one, the loon.

Back to the portal.

And is Tim's shovel ready? Is Tim, or does he need another break?

Permalink Mark Unread

Tim's about as ready as he's going to be, if the scanner is there.  He's got another two hours of this in him before he's going to need a break, probably.

To preserve the scanner from Far Too Many Knives, he utilizes a field-expedient method to offset the scanner from his body.

Which is to say, he duct-tapes it to a stick.

Permalink Mark Unread

The logistics guy winces around the eyes when he sees duct tape going on a fairly expensive piece of specialized equipment.  But when you think about it, every piece of equipment that comes out of a dungeon is a bonus, really.  You plan around having written off about 20% of whatever you send into any given dungeon, and if you get more back it's a nice bonus.  Especially when this many knives are in the picture,

Permalink Mark Unread

Once more into the breach.

The core itself is likely to be four dimensional, extending across several if not all layers, so his guess is that it will be on a mountain that didn't have any vics on it. This one's closest.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, he supposes he doesn't have much of a choice in the matter.  It's a little awkward, carrying a snow shovel AND a Scanner Onna Stick.  But you can make up for bad posture with enough superstrength, and he needs that to survive the knives anyway.

Does Cricket make his way back to Tim's shoulder?  It won't change anything except Tim's mood, but when you're tasked with shoveling off mountain peaks, an improved mood is nothing to sneer at.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cricket is digging! Sometimes he appears to be materializing snow out of nowhere to fling out of the hole he's pawing open, presumably from other layers.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You think you've got a line on something, Cricket?"  If he does, no point trying to search for something with the scanner.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I thought so but I am getting less convinced."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yessir."  He'll gingerly turn the scanner on, during a break in the Knifeswarm, and try searching for anything that looks like a potential dungeon core.

He's not...seeing anything that looks core-ish, although for all he knows the core could look like a literal fancy rock.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Should I haul you kata from here to get a look from more layers?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yessir, if you think that would help.  Honestly, I'm just looking for anything that doesn't look like it belongs on a mountaintop.  Could be anything, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They don't vary that much." Shove.

Permalink Mark Unread

He doesn't stumble, that would be embarrassing.  But it is pretty weird seeing the landscape change in the blink of an eye.  "Could be hidden in a box or something, though."  Scanning reveals just rock, at least at this level.  "Not seeing anything on this level."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shove again. "Does it go through rock or do we need to check the opposite side of the mountain?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nossir, it won't go through rock.  It's ultrasonic."  Wish we could get a ground-penetrating radar setup.  Or ultrasonic drones, but.  Knives everywhere.  They wouldn't make it this far.  Maybe if Ferrer was around...but he's not.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cricket shoves him through all the layers and it's not there. Around to the other side.

Permalink Mark Unread

After the second shove on the other side of the mountain, Tim's starting to get kind of annoyed.  He's willing to scan every mountain in this dungeon, but that doesn't mean he's thrilled about it.  But when the third shove comes around, he thinks he sees something.  "Hey, that doesn't look like a rock.  I think we might have something worth digging out."  Down goes the scanner, out comes the shovel.  Are they lucky today?

Permalink Mark Unread

Cricket kills knives rather than get in the way.

And there’s the core! It's a hypersphere; it’s the same color as the rock of the mountains, with lichen on it and patches of white like the poles on a globe, but it's uncannily smooth and heavy.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a big dang rock, is what it is.  And he could rig it to blow and run, but it's...probably...better to bring it down the mountain.  Let the looters do their jobs.  "Thanks for keeping them off of me."  Sort of.  I'm only getting stabbed four times a minute, now, which is...better, probably.

This is the most delicate part of any operation.  He's more than competent to destroy a core.  He REALLY doesn't want to do that.  If he breaks the core now, he'll have to sprint down a snowy mountain in 4D with nothing but his feet and a flying monster cat to save him from being sucked into another dimension and lost forever.  He very gingerly picks it up.  You'd think it were a baby or some monstrous egg, given the level of delicacy involved.  And starts very carefully making his way down the mountain.  Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cricket tugs him delicately with the leash to the portal layer - they started pretty close to the edge and there's not room for him to get around and push - and then flies along, swooping in circles overhead.

Permalink Mark Unread

He does indulge himself for a moment, looking at Cricket pass overhead.  He stops moving, of course, when he does this - no point risking a fall with a dungeon core in hand.  A live grenade would be safer.  He'd survive that without question.

And he makes sure the bodycam gets a shot of Cricket's 4D eldritch floofy glory.  Hopefully it hasn't been stabbed to death, but who knows.

Okay.  Final stretch.  There's one minor scare with an extremely inopportune ankle-stab, but overall this has been a pretty decent core hunt.  He caaarefully sets the core on the ground in front of the portal and nods to Cricket.  "I think from here on out, it's the looter's turn.  Unless you want to get some more knives, sir?"  He's perfectly happy to watch Cricket hunt and see if he can get a video of it if he's lucky.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It probably won't live and they don't display interesting flocking behavior so there's not much value in catching more. Especially since it would be hard to get the cage open again without letting the first one loose."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kind of a shame."  Not so much of a shame that he won't kill the dungeon when the time comes, but.  Still a shame.  It's a unique and beautiful environment with such bizarre lifeforms and tomorrow it'll be dead at Tim's hand.  Oh well.  "Whenever you're ready, then, sir?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Big yawn. Out he hops.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tim takes one last look up at the vast vistas of nothingness in the 'sky' and sighs.  One more dungeon, ready to strip to the bone.  It's a little bit of a melancholy thought.  He pops back through the portal, ready to deliver his report.

Permalink Mark Unread

By the time he gets out Cricket is already yelling at somebody. "- CLEARLY in my paperwork that if I do a live capture you take it out of my pay and follow the OMP instructions! It was not a breach! You had hours!"

"It looked like it might -"

"Oh it looked like that, did it, you absolute buffoon, but your eyes didn't do you very much good when you read the briefings, did they, so maybe you were wrong. You blithering idiot, I'm taking market price out of you personally, of the monster and its cage and Tess's time and my time and my escort's time, how do you pronounce that stupid name on your shirt?"

"I don't think -"

"Is it really Dixon-Hart, you just go around with that emblazoned on your person all the time -"

It looks like someone has crushed the formerly intact knife inside its lobster trap under the wheel of a DRT truck.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tim has made a more-than-average number of promises to himself, and has kept most of them.  The most recent one he possibly regrets, but in general it seems to be a pretty good system.

Here and now, he's making himself a promise that he's never going to go into a dungeon without a team of at least three Dwarves again.  Because while they weren't really necessary in the dungeon, it would have great to have a team of three verified-competent human beings who he could trust not to run over a soon-to-be-irreplaceable dungeon material.

Okay.  Consider the following, at speed:

Can he successfully intervene and deescalate Cricket?  He squints at Cricket and decides 'absolutely not'.  This requires a degree of charisma that he does not, in fact, possess.

Given that he probably can't calm Cricket down, it's possible that he could divert Cricket.  And it would be nice if they could solve the object-level problem of no longer having a live-capture of a ladybug knife.

Actually, no.  The most important thing here is that they don't permanently alienate Cricket as a dungeoneer.

He takes a moment, settles into his game face, the kind he'd slip into before a tournament match.

Permalink Mark Unread

He strides over, butts into Dixon-Hart's personal space.  One foot forward, almost between Dixon-Hart's feet.  "What, exactly, in your own words, happened to the dungeon material we entrusted to the DRT's care?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He ran it the fuck over," hisses Cricket from the hood of the truck.

"It was sawing its way out!" says Dixon-Hart.

Permalink Mark Unread

He bites his tongue, nearly hard enough to draw blood.  "Got it.  The dungeon knife was sawing its way out of a containment device specifically rated for its strength."  He clenches his teeth hard enough to keep in the followup, 'but not so quickly that you couldn't run it over, or improvise a containment system, such as a metal fucking box.'  He points at a nearby DRT goon.  "Get this man's commanding officer here, immediately."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It shouldn't have been on site still!" roars Cricket. "There are people whose job it is to put it in another box at the warehouse, since the DRT apparently hires braindead wastes of oxygen who can't manage that!"

"It got a couple of wires cut!" Dixon-Hart protests.

The goon fetches the CO, who was, truth be told, already on his way out of the bodega's bathroom from having heard the yelling. "Whatever happened that's no excuse to abuse my squad," he snaps. "Having powers doesn't give you the right to be a bully."

"Having a stupid name doesn't give him the right to destroy my stuff!" Cricket yowls.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Summer sticks her head out of the tent to see what's going on.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can sort out who's at fault once we're not in the middle of an active dungeon cordon.  There are cameras all over, we can have an AAR on the subject once we clean up.  In the meanwhile, I suggest that Mister Dixon-Hart take a break, considering the...conflict."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aren't you two supposed to be wrapping up yourselves any minute now?" says the CO. "Frankly -"

"I don't want -" Cricket begins.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cricket," says Summer, "do you need to call that Tess person, or Traceless, or anybody, to let them know what happened? I can push the buttons on your phone for you if you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

He hisses nastily at Dixon-Hart and then leaps off the truck's hood to fetch his phone.

Permalink Mark Unread

Summer, you are fantastic, thank you for distracting Cricket.  I hope.  He gives her a thumbs up and an I-owe-you-one look.  He furtively glances around, making sure Cricket's no longer around.  Great, I've got a minute or so.  "Okay, everyone withing shouting distance knows that Cricket's not going to win any friendliness competitions anytime soon.  But he's also the top 4D navigator.  And it's pretty much impossible to get dungeon materials out of there unless you have a durability power."  He pauses for effect, letting the 'and those are pretty rare' go unspoken.  "Right now, you have a choice.  You can have Dixon-Hart stay on-site, or you can have my help stripping the dungeon.  I got the core, I don't have to do anything else.  Make the call."  No promises about what Cricket might choose, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

The CO pulls Dixon-Hart away for a soft conversation - away enough and soft enough that Tim doesn't get to hear the details. It ends with Dixon-Hart leaving.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Cricket's phone is not kept soft; Tim can hear Traceless's voice going "how's my wonderful kitty, did you save everybody -")

Permalink Mark Unread

Well.  That was tons of fun.  It's not, actually impossible that Dixon-Hart made the right decision.  He doesn't think so, given that there were other options on the table, but if it was moments away from breaking containment a flying knife could have been a disaster.  He hopes Dixon-Hart doesn't lose his job, but he also hopes that Dixon-Hart gets busted down to handling D-rank dungeons for the next while.

... probably not.  The issue with the Confluence is that you need all hands on deck, and it can be extremely tempting to keep bad people around who save lives on net despite being bad at their jobs.

He's woolgathering in an attempt to put off a hard conversation.  "Want to face down Cricket's wrath together, Summer?"  He offers an arm for guiding, and definitely not for moral support purposes.

Permalink Mark Unread

She links arms. "He's on the phone, do we gotta?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes yes I saved everybody but they didn't send my capture to the warehouse and when it snipped a wire in its cage some dunderhead panicked and ran it over with his truck."

Permalink Mark Unread

Esper-quiet, he murmurs to her, "He won't be on the phone forever.  Sadly."  Little mischievous grin, just for her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Shit! Where in the process was the first problem, like, did they call a courier at all or should I follow up with the warehouse folks to see what happened after that?"

"I don't know if they called. They didn't tell me about having run into any problem till I came out of the dungeon just now and it was crushed. They were hard to catch without wrecking them but I wanted to get you one."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tim steps obtrusively into Cricket's line of vision.  "May I butt in, please?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What," says Cricket flatly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is that Aumento? Hi, Aumento."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yessir.  Hi.  I think the issue might've been with the logistics side on this site, specifically.  When I ordered Cricket's dinner, someone put it in a cooler and didn't tell anybody about it.  There also was a real issue getting anybody to get me a box for the, er, deceased knives.  Wound up using a cardboard box which is the sort of thing that works for an hour, but.  Probably not for two.  The scanner and shovel turned up fine, but those are DRT-standard.  The issue seemed to be, uh.  Localized?  Localized, around weird orders."

He'd been wondering why a cardboard box would be the best somebody could do, and some of the pieces are starting to come together.

Permalink Mark Unread

"A caged monster isn't that irregular, but maybe they weren't expecting the warehouse to accept it till the core was destroyed - did you guys get it -"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. New York has a Lootbox franchise, they'll take a small monster with a live dungeon and just kill it themselves if the dungeon gets away!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right, but that's Lootbox, New York has like half a dozen other dunmat warehouse companies and I think those don't, maybe someone didn't know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm really not thrilled with how one of their guys treated Cricket, either.  I'm planning to lodge a complaint through Bill, and if that doesn't have some changes we can, uh.  Verify. I'm never coming back here and I'm planning to explain why."

Permalink Mark Unread

"New York gets more dungeons than anywhere else in North America short of Mexico City, you can blacklist specific DRT squads without writing off the whole metropolis. Your call, of course. What'd the guy do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Um."  He's put on the spot for a second, but mentally rallies.  "He was acting like...Cricket wasn't a person?  Wouldn't talk to him, directly, wouldn't take him seriously, that kinda thing?  He was just - being a jerk, generally, to the guy singlehandedly responsible for keeping me alive in a dungeon."  Who is also a dungeon monster kitty.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You could have easily stayed alive in the dungeon without me. You just couldn't have accomplished anything of value."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unfortunately speciesism is an unsolved problem and if we tried to follow up on it every time we'd wind up with some combination of gutting a mostly functional system or wasting our time. I really want to find him his own PA to go with him to every dungeon and run interference but it's not a matter of just putting out a job ad."

Permalink Mark Unread

Neither response makes Tim happy.  "I...suppose.  And, Cricket, I think I have to disagree with you.  You could have pushed me kata or ana and I would have had no way to get back to the portal.  I trusted you with my life in that dungeon, and I appreciate what you did."  Also your fur was even more beautiful in there.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't be maudlin. Me not being a murderer isn't the same thing as me keeping you alive." He starts licking a paw.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want to catch another one? I can have Tess send another cage and call Lootbox herself."

Permalink Mark Unread

Cricket looks up at Tim.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think you're a murderer, I was trusting you not to do something stupid, and you didn't.  But I'm happy to help you catch as many knives as you want.  The looters are going to be stripping the area as soon as I'm ready, no reason you can't join us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right. Sic Tess on it," sighs Cricket.

Permalink Mark Unread

Typing noises come through the phone. "Yup. Shouldn't take any longer than the last one."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tim sighs deeply.  "I'll tell them we'll start strip-mining the dungeon once the cage comes in, then.  Traceless, okay if I text you in a few minutes?  It sounds like you're, uh, literate right now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yup, texting will work fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool.  I'll meet you at the portal when we have a cage then."  He's off to speak to to the CO again.  It's up to Summer whether she'd like to join him or head back to the tent for this fun little conversation.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll follow him, might as well get some guiding in.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then the CO may have to restrain himself from laughing at the juxtaposition of Tim's resting bitch face and his hands all over Summer.  "Okay.  I'm good to help strip the place as soon as the replacement cage arrives.  Cricket is going to catch a knife to replace the one that's destroyed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Glad to hear it," says the CO phatically.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tim glances around, checking to see whether they're being overheard.  Nobody nearby?  Good enough, at least.  "Look, I have no idea if that guy did the right thing or not.  I wasn't there.  I won't plan some stupid revenge scheme.  If there's a review and it says he did the right thing, I'll trust it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Great," says the CO, his voice level. "Do you need anything else from us, sir?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just one thing.  Make sure everyone knows to not piss off the cat.  He's, uh.  Abrasive.  But everyone in that dungeon would be dead without him."  You'd think this would be in the briefing, but maybe you're not allowed to say 'the cat is a little shit but we have to suck it up' on official letterhead.

Permalink Mark Unread

"If he wants to be a little bully just because he's got powers there's places that have to put up with that. Americans ought to be able to afford pros."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tim shrugs.  "Yeah, he's not professional.  He's a monster cat.  He's not human.  But he's run a dungeon or two a day most days for the past ten years.  Run the math on how many lives he's saved doing it.  But if you can't work with him, turn down the assignment because your team can't be professional enough for two, and let someone else put up with him."  He's not wrong that Cricket's a little shit sometimes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you need anything else from us, sir."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope.  I'll leave you to it."  He can't, actually, turn on his heel and storm off with Summer on his arm, but he sure wishes he could.  When he gets back to the tent, he flops on the couch in an incredibly frustrated heap.  "Uuuuggggghhhhhh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They use the 'but he saves so many lives' logic for people who, like, grope vics on the way out, too," Summer says after being quiet for a minute. "My last partner broke it off with her previous partner because he did that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"People do that?!What the shit.  Why.  "What the - fucking.  Shit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"At least that guy did! I didn't hear any vics complaining about Cricket besides that he's a monster at all, though, is he nicer to them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean.  He's never really nice, but he's mostly keeping it under control.  I guess....I mean, I still stand by what I said, if you can't stand a few mean words you shouldn't be running dungeons anyway.  But.  Ugh."  I guess...if I had to choose, personally, between getting my ass grabbed and dying I'd fuckin' take my pants off for it, but what an awful thing to do to people.  He pauses, thinking.  "Was I out of line, do you think?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think out of line but I dunno if it'll work."

Permalink Mark Unread

He grumbles under his breath, "Oh, I know what'd work alright..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Tim mimes 'choking someone out', then flops back down in disgruntlement.  "I should let it go."  It won't do me any good to be mad about someone whose precious little feelings are more important than saving lives.  I'll chill out.

... any minute now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Pet pet.

Permalink Mark Unread

With Summer's help and guiding, Tim does manage to calm down.  It takes a little while.  He was so close to being done with the stupid Knives Everywhere dungeon.  When he's more or less baseline amounts of irritated, he remembers something.  "Thanks for distracting Cricket, by the way.  Forgot to say, earlier, with the, uh.  Everything."  That he is not going to think about, because he just finished working himself back down!

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was soooo not sure that would work."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, neither was I.  But you pulled it off."  He's flopped enough that he's a little antsy, which he combats by petting Summer.  "Wanna be Cricket's on-site support from now on?  You've done the best job handling him of anyone today."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think that would compete with my current job and I don't know if he actually likes me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know if he likes anyone other than Traceless.  And I like your current job."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But if you wind up taking a bunch more dungeons with him I could see if I can help him out? Not like I have a lot else I need to be doing besides eating to compensate for the backlash I'm using on you. We could bond over sushi."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Might be worth looking into.  Oh, right.  I wanted to text Traceless about how to, uh.  Handle Cricket's attitude."

Hey, Traceless!  It's Aumento again.  I don't know if you talked to Cricket much, but I was wondering how I'm doing with getting along with him.  He hasn't refused to work with me yet, but I don't know if he ever warms up beyond that.

Texting is so much better than talking face-to-face, I can take a minute to figure out what I mean to say.

Permalink Mark Unread
Sometimes he does. Haven't queried Cricket about you directly, do you want me to?
Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, please.  If there's anything I can do to get along better with him, I'd like to know.  And if I asked him directly, he'd just make a cutting comment.

Permalink Mark Unread
Probably

A delay, and:

He says he supposes you are fine whenever Kevin and Hyperion are busy, which implicitly ranks you above several other people he's willing to run dungeons with more than once.
Permalink Mark Unread

Good enough for me.  Thank you for checking for me, I really appreciate it.

"Good news, I'm in Cricket's 'Top 3 Bodyguards' List."  I'd enjoy it more if he wasn't such a mouthy little jerk, but he makes up for it in the dungeon.  Hm.  I might have to think about that argument some more.  Later, when it won't piss me off.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Congrats, your reward is more dungeons with Cricket."

Permalink Mark Unread
No problem. Thank you for keeping him safe in there.
Permalink Mark Unread

You're very welcome!

"Oh no...what have I done to myself..."  He pretends to collapse in shock, smirking around the corners of his mouth.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a cruelly ironic fate."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It must be my punishment, for waking up Cricket."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was illegal. I warned you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I knew I should have listened to my wiser partner."

Permalink Mark Unread

Meanwhile, Cricket gets off the phone with Traceless and, when the lobster cage arrives, takes delivery himself and naps right on top of it lest something happen to it without his knowledge.

Permalink Mark Unread

Unfortunately, Tim misses out on a winged talking cat taking delivery of a lobster pot rated for knives.  Tragic.  He does zero himself out after not too long, and reluctantly gets up.  "I'll see you in a few?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"See you!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Zzzzzz.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, they can't hang you twice. "Cricket?  Cricket?  Cricket?"  Eventually, Cricket will wake up.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yawn. "I'm up, I'm up. Time to catch a knife? Again?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yessir.  I'll get the crate for you, if you like."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do." He gets off of it, stretches, and flies for the portal again, waiting for Tim to climb up after.

Permalink Mark Unread

Right.  He thinks about exactly how responsible he wants to be as he walks.  If he wanted to be a little lazy, he could just bring everyone in at the same time and stay in the dungeon and let Cricket handle the cleanup.

... yeah, he can't manage to convince himself to be lazy.  Guess he'll be costing some efficiency in favor of spoiling the native 4D kittycat.

He clambers up to the top and carefully sets down the cage.  "See you on the other side."  And he jumps through the portal, for the penultimate time.  He hopes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cricket takes just nine tries to get another knife intact, though he is in his intent hunting ignoring some on his tail (literally) that he'd normally have turned around and slain. When he's got one hooked he hauls it over to the portal, and gets it trapped and shut away.

Permalink Mark Unread

As soon as Cricket's out, Tim counts to ten and follows the cat.  He absolutely refuses to have another screaming match near a portal.

Permalink Mark Unread

The trap is closed. "I want that right next to where my phone is till Lootbox fetches it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yessir.  You got it."  Normally, he'd jump down and reinforce himself so that his ligaments don't undergo unscheduled downtime.  But he is so over this dungeon and refuses to cock it all up at the finish line.  He very carefully climbs down.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cricket sits on top of the cage again - it's got double layered walls, so the knife's bumbling efforts won't be able to poke him - and paws his phone awake and tells it, "Call Lootbox."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tim will wait for the conversation with Lootbox to be over, then.  And while he does that, he tries to think of something he can say that is both true and nice.  By the time Cricket's wrapped up he's settled on, "I'm glad we got the chance to work together.  If there's another dungeon it'd make sense to bring me for, I'd be happy to help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good." Tailflick. "You may pet me. A little."

Permalink Mark Unread

I DID IT I WON THE DUNGEON I WON THE DUNGEON I WON AHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAA!!!!

"Yessir."  Tim is actually just going to sit his ass down on the ground and carefully reach for Cricket's back.  Does he consent to be petted head to tail?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, that is the correct direction. (Purrrr.)

Permalink Mark Unread

He's grinning like an absolute loon and his face might get stuck like this but he gets to pet Cricket the dungeon kitty and this is fantastic he did it!!!!  Cricket actually does like him, a little bit!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

He’s really, really soft.

Permalink Mark Unread

He is!  He's the softest kitty Tim has pet all year, and he's gorgeous and he's so soft and Tim has been working so hard all day to be likeable to Cricket even when Cricket was a massive taint to everyone and he really should be helping loot this dungeon before it closes but Tim has earned this and he will not be denied.

"Do you like your wings to be pet?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is harder to learn to do right."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't mind learning, if you don't mind showing me.  I know you'll tell me what I'm doing wrong."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There is a good video of someone petting a cockatiel that is pretty close. It will come up if you search 'cockatiel getting scritches loreleiseven' with the seven written out not a numeral."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yessir."  Thanks to esper coordination, he can correctly pet a dungeon monster kitty while searching for a video on his phone.  He treats this as seriously as he does learning a new move: he slows down the video to .25 speed, follows along with the video, making the movements without actually touching Cricket, then attempts to very carefully execute the technique.

Are the fruits of his labor rewarded with kitty purrs, or kitty critiques?

Permalink Mark Unread

Cricket can actually talk and purr at the same time, turns out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then Tim will update accordingly, and marvel at Cricket's ability to do so!  Best cat he's ever petted!

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am done now." Perhaps or perhaps not coincidentally the map on his phone shows the Lootbox courier nearly on top of them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then Tim will get up, glance at the time, and wince slightly.  "Thank you for letting me pet you.  I'll see you another time?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Probably." The truck turns the corner. "Have a good looting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bye, Cricket!" says Summer as he hands off the knife to the Lootbox employee and orders up his teleport.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Goodbye."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tim definitely waits for Cricket to be gone, then beams down at Summer.  "He let me pet him!  I couldn't tell if he hated me or not, but he let me pet him and I had my camera running while it happened!!!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...does he know you had your camera running?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Huh.  Shit.  "I never have it off except in the guiding tent, and I know that's part of my standard contract..."  He thinks about it for a few moments.  "Probably?  I mean, it's not like I'm gonna put it on my socials, I never used them much even before I went viral."  Still weird to think I got actually popular.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That’s probably fine then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I'm not gonna be weird about it.  Anyway, I've been putting off the looting, they're probably getting antsy.  Duty calls."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Have a nice loot!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll get you something nice."

The looting goes quite well.  He winds up swiping Summer one of the top-percentage ladybug multitools as a souvenir.  Which is to say, it's only a mild amount of squished.  Hopefully she won't use the impression of his fingerprints embossed on the knife to steal his identity.

All in all, it's been a pretty good day's work.
