A tiefling and an Anarchist walk into a bar
Permalink Mark Unread

The Styx Oarsman is not traditionally welcoming to humans. But Jarkman recognizes this Leaguer by now, and he only makes one crack about how she owes him a new pack of cigars before letting her pass.

The faint candlelight isn't much help to someone of her pedigree, but no one comes to this tavern to admire the view.

The barman greets her with the usual grunt, and everyone returns to their conversations. Humans may be uncommon around here, but business is business.

Permalink Mark Unread

Indeed. And her business is disrupting business. This bar is often a good place to find help with that. Not that she has anything specific in mind right now, but it helps to keep her rep up.

Permalink Mark Unread

A new face enters, and takes a seat further down the bar. Doesn't seem terribly enthused about the fact that life is something she has to deal with.

Permalink Mark Unread

Similarly unenthused is the bar's owner, sitting at an empty table.

Upon seeing Sefi, he stands and approaches her. His face hasn't changed, but his posture has shifted.

"Sefi," he says almost warmly.

"I hope you have something interesting in store."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You know me. When do I not?" More quietly: "Who's the new tiefling? Don't think I've seen her around before."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She hasn't visited us before. Need a bit of time and space to work on her?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd appreciate it."

Permalink Mark Unread

So he complains around some of the other patrons about their surplus of Styx Snacks and that he's nearly willing to pay for someone to take it off his hands.

The other patrons shuffle and scurry over to enjoy their complimentary treats (brought to you by a couple of Pelor-addled bashers who couldn't let go of their self-righteous bluster- heavyset and fairly young, too).

Permalink Mark Unread

Not that she cares. At least it's quieter, now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sefi wanders over.

"Hey."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Do I know you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. That's sort of why I wanted to talk to you; I know most of the people here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're no tiefling."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well spotted. I am, however, very interesting and friendly, so they let me stick around."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good for you. What do you want?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Now that's a question worth all the jinx. Let's say... I want to make sure everyone else's life is as interesting as my own."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're recently arrived in Sigil? Where from?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Carceri."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sefi smiles. "Congratulations. What for?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Another's sins."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Planning to stay awhile, or...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Until I find what I'm looking for."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And that is?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not really any of your concern."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw, come on."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why do you care?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know a lot of people. Might be able to help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's not an answer."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure it is. But if you want a more selfish motivation, try this: someone who's coming out of Carceri with enemies and who is looking for something is probably also looking for revenge. Revenge tends to destabilize things. And I find stability boring."

Permalink Mark Unread

She gives the human a long, intense stare.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sefi looks back at her, calmly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Have you heard of the Waystaff of Duathal?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"As in Muamman Duathal? Not specifically. But I know someone who might have, actually."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Really."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I told you, I know lots of people. Met this one just the other day, in fact. Convenient timing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very. Was it around here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ha. No. No, she wouldn't be welcome in this bar. I hope that's not a problem for you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If it becomes one, it won't be because of me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's good. I'm Sefi, by the way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Elatra."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you have somewhere to stay? I don't think Anika's going to be reachable until tomorrow."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not yet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know a place, if you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right." She stands to leave.

Permalink Mark Unread

The brawl that has broken out distracts anyone who might have accosted an unfamiliar tiefling.

He salutes Sefi from his perch.

Permalink Mark Unread

She gives him a small wave as they depart.

Out into the streets of Sigil.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So where is this place?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not far. Come on."

Permalink Mark Unread

A halfling searches through a pile of garbage, glancing furtively at them as they pass.

An aasimar whispers quietly to a human druid, who smiles and says nothing.

The dabus communicate amongst themselves, cryptically as always.

A gnome crosses their path, atempting to sell them a book. He eyes Ellie nervously.

Permalink Mark Unread

Make sure the halfling's not following. Smile back at the aasimar and druid. Nothing to be done about the dabus.

Permalink Mark Unread

Is the book interesting?

Permalink Mark Unread

She notes her companion's interest and the gnome's nervousness, and mediates the interaction.

Permalink Mark Unread

Between the Fifth and the Final: Climbing the Mountain

He describes his investigative reporting in Celestia, blending in amongst the locals and his full immersion in the experience...he goes on as long as they allow him, or until they buy the book.

Permalink Mark Unread

Stop talking, gnome. She wants it.

Permalink Mark Unread

He thanks her graciously and suggests that she read that instead of ever visiting, poor thing, and he's off.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Are you planning a trip to Celestia?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course not. But if I ever wind up there, I would prefer to know more, rather than less."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair enough."

Her safe house isn't too much farther.

Permalink Mark Unread

The sounds of the city don't get quieter; as long as they move through the public space, there is someone watching and listening.

Nobody follows them, though. Small mercies.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's one floor of a slightly run-down residential building.

"Not much, but it's home." From time to time.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Charming."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right, so I've actually got to go run a few errands. Bed's over there, there's food in cupboards. You going to be all right if I leave you here for a while?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Elatra waves the book at her and wanders off to find a comfortable spot to read in.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Great! Don't wait up."

Back into the city. She needs to go make sure Anika hasn't left yet. She doesn't think she would've, but still. Better check.

Permalink Mark Unread

She receives fewer odd looks now that she's not accompanied by a tiefling.

People ignore her, going about their days.

The rain picks up.

Permalink Mark Unread

Now, where's Anika likely to be? Somewhere inside, assuredly. She'll try the pits first.

Permalink Mark Unread

The bouncer demands that she pay the fee, unless she'd like to participate.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not tonight. Here's the money.

Permalink Mark Unread

The minotaur lets her pass, then.

The seats are as full as they're going to get. Tonight's matches are expected to be less competitive then usual, but there will still be plenty of blood, so they still have some eager audience members.

Permalink Mark Unread

Easier to see if her quarry is among them.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's the redhead, down in the front rows. She cheers a particularly well-struck blow.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sefi heads down that way, and waits for a break in the action.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does one of the fighters collapsing on his severed leg count as a break in the action?

The audience cheers and jeers as the fight ends abruptly.

Permalink Mark Unread

She leans forward and taps Anika on the shoulder. "Hey."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wha- Oh! Hi, Sefi. What're you doing here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was just in the neighborhood, thought I'd stop by and watch a couple rounds."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ha! Yeah! Did you see the one with the tattoo, that footwork. It was beautiful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, no kidding. Hey, since I found you, I actually wanted to ask you something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Have you heard of something called the Waystaff of Duathal?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh. Yeah. It's kind of a big thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is, huh. We should talk."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Are you up to something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm always up to something, sweetie. You'll like it, trust me."

Permalink Mark Unread

Anika giggles.

"All right. Should probably get my partner in on the discussion, though. He's back at the inn, come on."

Permalink Mark Unread

Back to the inn, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

The inn contains several patrons, a bar, and other forms of entertainment.

Once they realize he's not in the common area, Anika is free to knock.

Permalink Mark Unread

Knock knock.

Permalink Mark Unread

A familiar bariaur answers the door.

Familiar to Anika, anyway. Sefi may not have actually seen one in person before.

He taps one of his hooves nervously on the floor.

"Anika Idunsdottir, greetings. And your friend?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sefi Mevane."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's the one I mentioned the other day, who said she might be able to help us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course."

He steps out of the way, letting them in.

"What do you want from us?"

Permalink Mark Unread

They enter.

"She wants to know about the Waystaff of Duathal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He never promised it to her. What do you want if for?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't want it for anything. I just want to know what it does."

Permalink Mark Unread

His tail twitches.

"It can banish people that it touches. I don't know where."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see. Does Duathal still have it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He does. He promised it to Anika as a reward."

Permalink Mark Unread

"For finding Idun, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's the plan."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How would you like some extra magical backup?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not gonna say no."

Permalink Mark Unread

He eyes her nervously.

"That kind of power could be dangerous in the wrong hands. Many warlocks and demon lords would vanish their enemies to Carceri or Ooze without a second thought."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So if they seem like that sort of person, we don't have to help them."

Permalink Mark Unread

He fiddles with the symbol around his neck.

"Alright. Thank you for your help," he says, bowing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's what I do. I'll swing by with her tomorrow morning, if that's okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Til then."

And she's off. Let's see now... She had a few leads in mind to maybe chase up after she met Anika. Who were they again?

Permalink Mark Unread

There are plenty of people who are supposed to have answers.

Kylie, a tout who makes herself easy to find.

Lissandra, who keeps track of shifting portals.

Rule-of-Three, who will answer three questions.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can deal with Rule-of-Three.

Permalink Mark Unread

Rule-of-Three is not exactly hard to find. If she asks, others will point her to a tavern in the Lower Ward.

The cambion is flapping his wings frantically, trying to escape the reach of an angry human fighter.

Permalink Mark Unread

Is the fighter shouting anything that might provide some context for their actions?

Permalink Mark Unread

"-ungrateful little fiends like you! Don't threaten my family again!"

"I answer questions, I answer questions honestly," the little fiend shrieks as it flies to the ceiling, where it continues to flap.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well. Much as she'd love to let this little drama play itself out, she does kind of have a deadline here. Good thing she's go surprise on her side. Time to take a nap, fighter.

Permalink Mark Unread

Luckily, his friends carry him away instead of fighting her.

The cambion eyes her curiously, but doesn't touch down.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've got a few questions for you, if you don't mind."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Payment in kind? Three offerings, three answers."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course." She reaches into her pouch and pulls out a ruby, a sapphire, and a pearl, all of exceptional quality.

Permalink Mark Unread

He giggles.

"Three gems, three questions. What do you want to know?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Where is Idun?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The River Styx."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Who took her?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Elgar Silverheart. Formerly of the Harmonium, aspiring lich."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Does he have any support?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"As much as he has opposition. Have a good day!"

And he's flying back to the bar.

Permalink Mark Unread

So. The Styx. This Silverheart must be heading for one of the Lower Planes. Too bad that tiefling doesn't seem the type to have many friends.

But it's a good start. She heads back out. Does she have time to chase down anyone else before morning?

Permalink Mark Unread

There's still time. The city awaits.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll go for Lissandra. Maybe narrow down destinations.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lissandra can typically be found in the Lady's Ward, where someone asking too many questions is suspicious.

Sefi is, luckily, unremarkable.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's more skill and effort than luck, let's be realistic.

Permalink Mark Unread

Regardless, no one finds her worth accosting in the street.

The Lady's Ward is clean. The streets are clear of refuse, garbage, and the like. The gardens are well-maintained, and exist. The buildings show no signs of wear, except those that have been allowed to gracefully age.

Landmarks include the prison, the courthouse, the barracks, and the statue of the renowned wizard, Bigby.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lovely place. Someday she's going to absolutely wreck its facade, and then it will be even lovelier.

But not right now. That would interfere with her other project.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lissandra is in the middle of interviewing a very confused and increasingly upset passerby.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, as long as they're not doing anything as stupid as that fighter with Rule-of-Three...

Permalink Mark Unread

No, it mostly seems like an unproductive interrogation. Eventually, Lissandra waves her off.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sefi's turn.

"Hi."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lissandra eyes her curiously.

"Anything I can do for you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Heard about anything interesting happening on the Styx lately?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nothing more interesting than usual. The Styx isn't the place for interesting things to happen, being that it's a pathway. For a little jink, I might be able to tell you about something interesting going on in Baator..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm more interested in travelers than places."

Permalink Mark Unread

Harrumph.

"My expertise is shifting portals. The Styx has never been a big draw."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, if you don't know, you don't know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can look into it, but you might find a better source. Your choice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How much?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Four stingers seems fair."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sefi looks at her consideringly for a moment, then pulls out four silver coins and flicks them over one by one.

Permalink Mark Unread

She clutches them eagerly.

"Recent travelers on the Styx, you said?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I did."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll see what I can scare up. Now shoo. Meet me here tomorrow."

Permalink Mark Unread

"When?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, an hour after peak?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll be here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll be seeing you then."

She walks off, pocketing her money hastily.

Permalink Mark Unread

Right. Call that an investment. Time?

Permalink Mark Unread

There's still time until antipeak. The city is as active as ever.

Permalink Mark Unread

Right. So where's Kylie?

Permalink Mark Unread

She could be anywhere. Touts are just as often giving a tour or selling information as they are looking for new marks customers.

Permalink Mark Unread

When anywhere is possible, everywhere is where you look.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's certainly not in the Lady's Ward; none of the residents would countenance tours.

How long does she look?

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, an hour so past anti-peak. She ought to get some sleep tonight at least.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually, she spots a woman running past her, leaping over carts and ducking around affronted customers in the Market Ward.

Permalink Mark Unread

What's she running from?

Permalink Mark Unread

A party of three: a human carrying a longbow, a gnome holding a glowing orb, and a half-orc wearing heavy armor.

They pause as they lose sight of her.

Kylie spots Sefi, and lands just behind her.

"Hide me from the fiend-food and I can give you the dark on anything. I'm Kylie, you've heard of me by now. Well?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right." She looks around. She knows a place not too far from here. "This way." Down an alley.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kylie follows, close at her heels. She occasionally starts to outpace Sefi, but falls back when she realizes she doesn't have a clue where they're going.

"Got a name, cutter?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sefi. Left up here."

Permalink Mark Unread

Left she runs.

"Those berks can pike it if they think I'm going to help them! What'd ya want to know?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm looking for information on a necromancer. Elgar Silverheart."

Permalink Mark Unread

She grimaces.

"Him? If you really want that rattling around in your brain-box. What are you looking to know?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I heard he used to be in the Harmonium, but now he wants to be a lich. What's up with that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The addle-cove likes enforcing punishments as much as he wants to live forever, and he can't have both anymore."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did he keep any allies?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He has children, Lady knows who they're loyal to. The other Hardheads have closed their doors to him, but if he has any fiendish allies...might need more than a favor to pay for that, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Who're his kids?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cressina and Kit Silverheart."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do they do anything interesting?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can't say I know the details. Do you need me to look into it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'd be helpful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can find what you need for the right price. You can get a discount for the heroic rescue."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How much?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Five jinx."

Permalink Mark Unread

Here's some money.

Permalink Mark Unread

She surreptitiously checks the pieces to confirm their composition, and pockets them.

"One of them is supposed to be in Sigil, but the other one left on the Styx a few peaks back. How should I get in touch?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can leave a message with the bartender at the Hanged Halfling."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll do that."

She grins, turning to go. Her tail whips and she's off at a run.

Permalink Mark Unread

Any signs her pursuers tracked them?

Permalink Mark Unread

Her pursuers seem to have failed to pursue her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent. Then she can go back and check on her guest.

Permalink Mark Unread

Asleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sefi turns in too.

Permalink Mark Unread

The light changes, as much as it ever does in Sigil. Those that walk during the day give way to those that walk the night. They revel and debate and fear and study, and then they give way to those that walk the day once more.

The rain has stopped by the time Sefi wakes up. The smog returns to its usual concentration, ever-present throughout the city.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lovely.

"So where is this person?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not far. So, Anika is actually on a quest from Duathal and was promised the Waystaff as a reward."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ugh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not so bad. She doesn't actually care about it all that much. She just wants to have fun on her adventure, and this is a convenient excuse. As long as you don't eat any babies in front of her there shouldn't be too many problems."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"But she is accompanied by a cleric. He might be uh, a little more troublesome."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I hate clerics."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They have their uses. And he's not the one in charge. Just try not to kill him gratuitously, that's all I ask."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No promises."

Permalink Mark Unread

Heh.

And then they're off.

Permalink Mark Unread

Peak is quite a ways off. If they'd like to explore the city, they're welcome to it.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's supposed to meet Lissandra at peak; she wants to get Anika and Elatra introduced before that.

Permalink Mark Unread

He rises later than planned, five hours before peak, unused to the lack of a true sun, true night.

He looks for Anika.

Permalink Mark Unread

Downstairs, enjoying breakfast.

Permalink Mark Unread

He bows. It's always a bit of a sight when a bariaur bows. He can only bow at the waist, since his goat legs are less useful for the purpose, and having horns pointed at you is less conducive to respect and more to discomfort. Still, pleasantries.

"My lady. How are you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm fine. How are you you? And didn't I tell you to cut it out with the "my lady"?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wouldn't with most people, but Duathal thinks highly of you. It's supposed to be a mark of respect from him. If you're really sure, I'll stop."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I dunno. It just- feels weird."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll stop."

He stands silently for a few minutes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did you want something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You don't seem worried about what they want with the waystaff."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're still a long way off from even getting it. There'll be time to figure it out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you want to give it to them, we should talk about it before we have it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I haven't said I want to give it to them, and they haven't said they want it. Maybe they're just academically interested."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I just don't want any surprises. I don't handle them very peacefully, which can be a bit of a problem."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure it'll be fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I hope it is."

He leaves her to her breakfast.

Permalink Mark Unread

The streets are busy, as usual, but nobody stops Sefi and Elatra on their way.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

Permalink Mark Unread

And here's their destination.

Permalink Mark Unread

The inn is quietest in the mornings, when everyone is asleep, out, or hungover.

Anika and her companion are easy to find.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sefi points her out to her companion, and they go over.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anika waves.

"Hi. You didn't say tiefling."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"Does it really matter?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Jalen Stillmeadow. You wanted to help us with our mission?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Apparently. How does one misplace a goddess?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She was kidnapped by a powerful wizard."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Elgar Silverheart, wannabe lich. Last spotted absconding down the Styx."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How do you know that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have my ways, dear."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The Styx can be dangerous to travel. We need to prepare. Which of your skills are you willing to admit?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want to look at my spellbook? I specialize in the school of Evocation. I'm rather good at killing things, even lichs."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you wouldn't mind."

Permalink Mark Unread

She tosses it at him with a sneer.

Permalink Mark Unread

He catches the book.

"I only want to know what we have to work with. Liches are dangerous enemies."

He reads her spells thoughtfully.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lots of ways to kill things, as promised. Also necromancy and a few utility spells useful for a wizard traveling alone through a hostile environment.

Permalink Mark Unread

He doesn't comment on the necromancy.

"Interesting. There isn't much overlap between us, so I'll cover what you can't. Transport, healing, and general support."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds useful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll be taking that back, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

He hands it over.

"The first thing we should do is make sure we have the necessary supplies to travel the Styx. Anika and I have enough food and water for ourselves."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know a supplier."

Permalink Mark Unread

Curt nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

"And I was thinking that I might tag along too, if you'll have me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I thought you didn't leave Sigil."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Rarely, I said. But this sounds like the sort of fun I'd regret passing up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We could use all the help we can get. When will you be ready to leave?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Soon, I hope."

Permalink Mark Unread

"By tomorrow."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you need help?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I can handle it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I look forward to our partnership."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah! This is gonna be fun. I can tell already."

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh good. She's enthusiastic.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Great! So, Elatra, let's go get some supplies together, and then we can meet back here tomorrow."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

"May Duathal clear your path."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, that. Bye!"

Permalink Mark Unread

The two take their leave.

Permalink Mark Unread

"See, I told you it'd be fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We didn't die. I suppose that's something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's the spirit!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I haven't worked with a tiefling before."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She seems nice, as part-demons go."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She seems interested in the waystaff. What if she betrays us?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If she does it before the quest is finished, she's not gonna get it. If she does it after, Duathal's gonna be, like, right there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think you're underestimating her power or her malice"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If she can give a god a serious fight, we're already in trouble. We can watch her, sure. All I'm saying is, if she's not going to betray us, let's not provoke her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course. I won't act first."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Here's to a successful quest, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

As the sky grows brighter, people begin to retreat to homes and taverns. The noise of the city fades.

Until the next wave arrives. Those who walk Sigil during the day are different than those who walk at night. They are less careful, touching casually and paying little attention to those around them.

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't like them.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You could try being a little more subtle about it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You don't like people, right? I get it, probably got good reason. Can't say I'd even blame you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, it's just- you're sort of glowering. At everyone. Bit intimidating to a normal person, coming from a tiefling."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Doesn't seem to be affecting you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Where'd you get the impression I was normal?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Snort.

Permalink Mark Unread

"But a lot of what I do, the reason I can be as effective as I am, is that I use normal people. You can get a lot done if you're not just one person."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't want to make friends."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's fine. You don't have to. But- you do acknowledge that that's what I do, and that it works for me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "So, one key and actually really easy step to that is not looking at everyone like you want to kill them on principle, even when you do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kinda like that, yeah! You don't even have to smile, necessarily; just sort of smooth your face out. People want to think that other people like them, and if they can't tell what you think about them, they'll try to persuade themselves that you do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah huh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just give it a try. There's a time and place for intimidation, but it's good to have more than one trick in your bag."

Now, whereabouts was Lissandra...?

Permalink Mark Unread

As usual, she can be found in the Lady's  Ward. Today, she's loitering outside the barracks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Remember what I said about about not glaring at everyone? This'll be a good time to practice. I've contracted Lissandra to get some more information about where we're going. Try not to get the price raised on us."

Permalink Mark Unread

Elatra rolls her eyes, but at least is not scowling.

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles tightly when she sees Sefi.

"You were looking to hear about travelers?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's right."

Permalink Mark Unread

She cracks her knuckles.

"A human woman, a larger party, and a few fiends. Which ones would you like to hear about?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Talk to me about the larger party."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A half-orc druid, a half-orc barbarian, a half-elf, and a halfling rogue. I can tell you what I know about their intended path, or you can ask about one of the others."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Where are they going?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Carceri and Acheron, not necessarily in that order."

Permalink Mark Unread

Elatra rolls her eyes. Subtly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What about the human traveling alone?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Female, sorcerer, destination unknown."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And the last?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The fiends were planning on visiting Acheron, mostly to gawk at goblins, and to Pandemonium, mostly to win a bet, and Baator, because they've gotten it in their heads to overthrow Dis Pater."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hope that works out for them. No one else?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's all I have. I think the party or the human sorcerer could be potential allies, but I didn't investigate deeply. If you want to put me on that, I can try to keep you updated, but I can't afford interplanar messaging."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't think I'll take you up on that, then. I expect to be leaving Sigil tomorrow."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fine by me. Nice working with you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks. See you!"

Permalink Mark Unread

They leave.

Permalink Mark Unread

"See how easy that was? A friendly face, a little coin, and she was more than willing to help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The information didn't seem all that useful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not this time, maybe. But it was a quick and easy check, and I like being prepared."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm. Now where are we going?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"To check on the other informant I tapped."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kylie is easy to find.

"The daughter just left on the Styx, alone," she says without preamble.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Does she happen to be a sorcerer?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"How did you know? Cat familiar, lots of explosive and fire-themed magic, likes taking bounties on beast that threaten the locals, and probably our lich's daughter."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just a guess. Any news on the son?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's hard to get a lot of information on him in Sigil, and I don't leave. What I know is that he's an honorable type, so he's probably on Baator or Gehenna."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anything more on Silverheart himself?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He studied in Excelsior for a while. He has friends in Arcadia, too. I wouldn't be surprised if going after him destroys your reputation."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's trying to become a lich. I'm not terribly worried."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Suit yourself! So, friends with celestials, probably friends with fiends but that's harder to prove. There's a woman in the Harmonium who remembers him fondly, but you'd have to go to Arcadia to get anything from her. Not worth it. There's the shopkeeper who I've fingered as his last contact before he left, but I might have missed someone more personal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Where's the shop?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Where else? The Market Ward. I can lead you there, but that's extra."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"You have to admire her entrepreneurial spirit. All right, lead the way."

Permalink Mark Unread

So she does. She turns away a few who recognize the most sought-after tout in Sigil, and they travel the Market Ward relatively unmolested. There are shops upon shops here; someone unfamiliar with a particular establishment could easily get lost trying to find it.

They eventually stop outside Effervescent Elixirs, nestled between Aramand's Mending and Catch'rs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"See if they have anything useful for us. I'll talk to the shopkeeper."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm less good with the talking. Do you need me for anything right now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think that's it, Kylie, thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No problem! Call me again if you're in town."

She strolls off.

Permalink Mark Unread

They head inside.

Permalink Mark Unread

The shop isn't very crowded. A heavily adorned half elf turns her nose up at them as they pass.

The shopkeeper, a rotund, slimy creature, greets them amicably.

"Welcome, come in, come in! What do you seek?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Information, principally. About a customer you may have had a few days ago?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Elatra goes to browse.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Many, many customers. Who are you seeking?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Elatra finds bottles, vials, and flasks, all empty. She finds healing potions, potions of speed, and potions of invisibility.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Man named Elgar Silverheart."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hmm. Probably ought to pick up some of the healing. Can't necessarily count on the cleric.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What would you like to know? Tiresome berk, weren't he."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What did he buy?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Acid and a potion of invisibility. He was..."

He glances at Elatra suspiciously.

"He didn't want to stay long. He finds us shameful."

Permalink Mark Unread

The shop also contains acid, tongues, and various unlabeled vials.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Rude of him."

Permalink Mark Unread

Acid's potentially useful. Some things can't be killed with fire.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, very rude. He spoke loudly of his plans, very much air and no thought."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you remember anything specific he said?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You buy anything? Rude, rude. He says he was going to the prison plane."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see." Carceri, huh. Interesting. She looks over to her companion. "Elatra? Find anything?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She brings over a combination of healing potions and acid vials.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll take these."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course, of course. I may also recommend?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

He points at the unlabeled vials which contain unidentified brown and grey sludge.

"Instant army."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Golems?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He says something incomprehensible.

"Gehreleths," he...clarifies?

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No."

Permalink Mark Unread

He grumbles again in that incomprehensible tongue.

"One hundred and fourty jinx," he offers.

Permalink Mark Unread

Money.

Permalink Mark Unread

And here are their potions.

Permalink Mark Unread

And a little bit extra. "Thanks for the help."

Permalink Mark Unread

He bows awkwardly, refraining from shaking her hand. Probably wise.

Permalink Mark Unread

And then they can be off.

"I think all that's left is getting supplies, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No more 'contacts'?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think we've got enough information to be going on with."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We know he left on the Styx, we know he's probably going to Carceri. He used to have celestial allies but I don't think many of them will still be talking to him; fiends will be, but the only party of them in the area isn't going to the same place. His daughter is chasing him, and not in a friendly way; we may be able to link up with her. He may have contracted the adventuring party, but they don't sound like too much trouble. And again, lich. If they don't know, that might turn them against him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmm."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's what I do. Trust me."

Permalink Mark Unread

With all of their shopping done, the city awaits.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anything you want to see in town?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is there anything interesting?"

Permalink Mark Unread

The city continues to contain shops, bars, headquarters, barracks, courts, workshops, and residences, as cities often do.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lots. This is Sigil. What do you consider interesting, specifically?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let us say... something of historical significance."

Permalink Mark Unread

The Lady's Ward or the Clerk's Ward is probably her best bet.

The Hall of Records and the Hall of Information are options, but for the great, legendary histories, she'll have to bump elbows with the wealthy residents.

Permalink Mark Unread

Heh. Yeah.

"Let's head up to Lady's Ward, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lead on."

Permalink Mark Unread

The Lady's Ward is a good distance away from this shop. It's possible there are other interesting things to buy, or at least, the shopowners seem to think so.

With employees trying to flag down possible customers, they won't avoid attention for long.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sefi likes to think she keeps an open mind about that sort of thing.

Permalink Mark Unread

So many offerings!

Books, elixirs, scrolls, traveling supplies...

The woman trying to sell animals is particularly enthusiastic today.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have no use for an animal. Begone."

Permalink Mark Unread

She goes, murmuring something uncomplimentary about Elatra's heritage.

Sigil is rather large; it might be worth investing in some faster transportation.

Permalink Mark Unread

Half the point of the exercise is to kill time.

Permalink Mark Unread

The light has nearly changed completely by the time they find their quarry.

One of these fine proprietors will have what they seek.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well? What is there?

Permalink Mark Unread

After some asking around, they learn that a former Dustman in the Lady's Ward is rumored to have the final, unpublished book by a Prime noble, known for her utter rejection of wealth and rank.

A young mephit, known for his singing ability and recurring addiction problems, is said to know the whereabouts of a demiplane with some connection to the Draedens.

Permalink Mark Unread

The Prime is boring.

Permalink Mark Unread

The demiplane's not, like, a mouth, is it? That's not a connection Sefi particularly wants to see.

Permalink Mark Unread

Rumor does not really know the details but probably not a mouth. If someone was sending people to get eaten by the Draeden, they'd be put in the dead-book soon enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

That sounds all right, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes. Where is this singing mephit?

Permalink Mark Unread

Somewhere? None of them seem to know where he lives, just that he frequents the Fortune's Wheel.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, is he around?

Permalink Mark Unread

Not in the main bar, but he could be in the gambling area or the bear-baiting pit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Investigation!

Permalink Mark Unread

She will eventually find him in the middle of a dice game. He's insulting the other players with personalized, spontaneous songs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

It's kind of cute.

Permalink Mark Unread

He finishes up and retreats with his winnings.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey! We heard you know something about the Draedens?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He squints...probably. Mephit features can be hard to read for people who are used to faces with distinct features, since his are obscured by the smoke billowing from his entire body.

"A little louder why don't you. Who are you with?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's always faction this and faction that in this town. Nearly sucks the fun out of the whole enterprise."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Faction, pit fiend, lost prince of the whatsit clan of the who-cares kingdom. Someone sent you or you're right addled. You don't want to go there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why not?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why not, she asks. Not why, which is the better question. Why not go somewhere that isn't tied to gluttonous enemies of the gods from before there were tieflings, no she asks why not. Because it's boring, ma'am. It's nice to mention when you need an overly large bodyguard to leave you alone, because his superiors will eat it up, but it's not very useful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Useful is as useful does."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, you're charming enough to offset your friend, and charming is a terrible reason to share information, but then I'm a terrible person. Giant maggots, in an empty void. Possibly, young Draedens."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Where's the gate?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Demiplane, not plane. You'll have to visit the Ethereal for this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bit of a trip, isn't it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Boring, not useful! I need something to tell people at parties! If you're going to kill me I recommend waiting until I'm finished my latest delivery."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The Mercykillers don't like mephit incompetence, but they take interference worse."

Permalink Mark Unread

"On your way, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Best of luck with whatever other dangerous things you have planned. Don't tell the Draedens I say hi."

He flies away.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So I guess that's a bust."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh well."

What else?

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a halfling from Arcadia, a former Hardhead supposedly involved with loss of the third layer.

There's a sorceror, recently arrived to the city, whose shop purports to have the skulls of various legendary figures.

There's a Clueless blacksmith who makes armor for dragon slayers.

Permalink Mark Unread

Skulls.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, it's all a bit morbid, isn't it?

Supposedly famous skulls make for better mimirs.

Permalink Mark Unread

That makes sense.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aoskar is historical but they probably don't want to hear much about that? It's sort of done with, the Lady won that battle. And anyway someone claiming to have found him isn't news, it's the babbling of addle-coves.

She thinks they might like to see these daggers she bought from an erinyes, they're really something. Real orc bone for the hilts.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ooh.

Permalink Mark Unread

She probably shouldn't whip them out in the street! Someone might think she was threatening them, and no one needs the long claw of the law grasping at them. Her house?

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure.

Permalink Mark Unread

The halfling leads them to her home. Richly appointed, the most notable feature isn't the expected landscapes on the walls or the fine wooden doors, but the fresco on the ceiling of her living room, which is where she leads them.

Her nupperibo servant looms at them vaguely. It's not very threatening, which is probably by design.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hmph.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was a bit of trick to negotiate her down, but I offered her a skilled craftsman in trade."

She retrieves a small, wooden box from her bookcase; fairly plain and weathered by time, it doesn't stand out, surrounded as it is not by books, but various curios and trinkets.

She carries it over to them slowly, breathing methodically, as if in awe herself.

She opens it, revealing nastily sharpened daggers, with the promised bone hilts. Their species of origin is difficult to identify at a glance, so their authenticity is still up for debate, but their beauty is not.

The nupperibo focuses its stare on Elatra, tilting its head gradually, further and further to the left.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Ignoring it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Those are really nice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I thought so. I haven't had cause to use them yet. You can hold one."

"Tiefling," rumbles the nupperibo.

"Shush," snaps its master. "Don't be rude to our guest."

Permalink Mark Unread

It'll get a face full of lightning if it tries anything.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sefi picks up one of the daggers.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's well-balanced, and the hilt is cool, slightly unexpected for bone.

Sefi may notice her host's gaze lingering on her more than her companion. She seems to have taken an interest in her particularly.

The nupperibo sways but offers no further comment.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sefi smiles.

"These really are excellent. Nice balance."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I thought they were well-crafted, but the novelty really convinced me. Beautiful, and functional. I haven't had cause to use them yet. Do you need someone skilled with a dagger?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not at the moment, I'm afraid."

Permalink Mark Unread

She pouts.

"Fine. You can try using it, seeing if you have any talent for it. I'd be willing to part with one, for the right price."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sefi grins and ducks her head. "And what is the right price?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"For something this rare? 1000 gold, at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

She chews her bottom lip. "That's little steep for me."

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins.

"You could haggle me down..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmm, maybe I have something you want?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Her eyes flit to Elatra.

"I'm listening, dear."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Ah. She'll just.. back off?

Permalink Mark Unread

That would seem to be best.

"Ah, if you'd like to take one of my books outside, I have a beautiful garden in the back. You could read there."

Permalink Mark Unread

She selects one mostly at random and heads off.

Permalink Mark Unread

And with that out of the way, they can head upstairs.

She tells her guest about the construction of the house as they walk. Sefi will understand fairly little of it, but that's not very important.

They arrive at a spacious bedroom. Her nupperibo waits outside the door.

She smiles toothily.

"Have you done this before?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Um, well..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She presses a finger to Sefi's lips.

"Don't worry, I can be gentle."

They retire to the bed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sefi's pretty good for a beginner, with just a little prompting.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then they'll have quite a nice time.

"I think I can offer you a discount," she says when they've finished.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose I'll need something on the books...ten gold within your budget?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can do that."

Permalink Mark Unread

They can get dressed then.

Sefi's host is very professional. She gets right back to business as soon as they leave the room, not a hair out of place.

Back to the living room, where she offers her the box.

"I'll just need a signature here, and then you'll be set. You can invite your friend back in, she's been waiting long enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sign sign.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elatra has become surprisingly absorbed in the book.

Permalink Mark Unread

She hands over the box.

"It was very nice doing business with you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

They depart.

"Satisfied?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Pair of nice daggers for only ten gold. How was your book?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Passable."

Permalink Mark Unread

The City of Doors contains many ways to keep busy. They're free to enjoy themselves however they like.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anything actually of historical significance?

Permalink Mark Unread

Sorry. (No she's not these daggers are nice.)

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a thriving trade for maps of Prime worlds with active trade routes with the City of Brass.

A baatezu recently arrived to the city is suspected to have a connection to a former archduke.

A disgraced scholar has published a reprint of his much-maligned treatise on additional Outer Planes, with some corrections based on alleged new observations.

Permalink Mark Unread

Where can she get one of those reprints?

Permalink Mark Unread

There are several varyingly reputable booksellers here, but none of the people they meet on the street want to admit knowing where to find this particular book.

Permalink Mark Unread

What about the booksellers?

Permalink Mark Unread

The booksellers who stock it will admit to carrying it. Most of them don't have it, but she can find it eventually.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll cover it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Apology accepted.

Permalink Mark Unread

The book starts by describing the natural gap in current theories of the Outer Planes, of planes which exist closer to Neutral. More difficult to find, these eight planes have been catalogued in varying detail by the author, who claims to have personally visited them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Huh. Maybe something to investigate in more detail later.

Permalink Mark Unread

Indeed. It's getting late.

Permalink Mark Unread

Time to be getting home.

Permalink Mark Unread

Early start tomorrow, yes?

Permalink Mark Unread

That seems to be the plan. They return to their lodgings to rest.

Permalink Mark Unread

And the next morning, supplies in hand, they go to meet up with the others.

Permalink Mark Unread

The others are waiting.

"How was everyone? Quiet for us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're all right. Found a destination."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Really."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Carceri."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"At least it's not the Abyss. Are you all packed?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We are ready."

Permalink Mark Unread

Pat pat the daggers.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's kind of charming. He'll try to ignore the tiefling.

"Let's. Are we taking a portal, or the Styx?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The Styx, I think. His daughter's chasing him. We might be able to catch up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right. This should be an experience. I don't think I should look like I'm a primary actor in this, we'll lose credibility. The tiefling should take the lead."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The tiefling has a name."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Elatra, do you mind taking the lead?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can figure someth-"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You won't necessarily have to do the talking if some of us pose as your slaves. I probably should, since I'm recognizably from a Good race."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds like fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sefi, you should consider it as well. Two masters and two slaves is a reasonable distribution, and as the human, you'll stick out."
