It sure would be nice if those were easy to achieve

"You know, I'm kinda surprised we haven't been ambushed by now," says Morgan, from the backseat. The black dye from her hair has long since rubbed out; she has yet to find anything that won't slide right off of her extremely weird hair follicles the minute any kind of liquid gets involved. But she's keeping the sunglasses. They're pretty cool. For all that she said she could skip sleep, she hasn't been; there's been a lot of sleeping, actually. It's mostly Zash that has been driving.

"Zazi's got to know where we are, just from the great big blank zone of bugs more than anything else, and from there..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is Zazi actually working for my brother?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nnnnnnyeeeehhhh??? It's complicated, man. Zazi finds your brother an endless source of entertainment. Assistance comes when it would help the action get there quicker so they can watch. Or meddle. Watch with a side of meddling if they feel like it. They're a hivemind, they keep their options open basically always."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe it wouldn't be entertaining to stop us or ambush us or whatever.

"I'm still annoyed that they managed to lie to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep. Hivemind. Pick a bunch of thems that don't know the details, and throw them into one body, bam, best liar ever. I didn't even know they could be human shaped until the diner, that was new."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...what'd they do before, buzz at you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That, and they can talk without the human-shaped body with, like. ... I dunno, spores or whatever."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Guess that makes sense."

Now he needs to fish for another topic because Julai is right there and if he doesn't distract himself he is going to vibrate through the seat. He's almost in range of the February plants, and he's never managed to get Nai's trick of hiding—when he was talking to Yvette he could stop actively projecting but that's a whole different skillset than being able to actually become invisible to plants. And maybe that's not so much of an issue, Nai is probably gonna be expecting him what with how Morgan is bringing him over and Yvette herself if she's alive is a great motivator, so surprise isn't really a tool he has on his arsenal, here.

He's not, really, actually sure what he's going to do, there. Nai does actually have him outclassed in firepower, and if he doesn't want Zash going into the February compound then he is just not going to be able to get in full stop. But he has to do something, and at least if he tries and fails he'll know what failed and be able to iterate on it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Someone else seems to be thinking about tactical viability, too.

"Probably our best bet is to make nice with Zazi, actually. I know you're pissed at them, and yeah me too, but. ... They want the show to go on."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I want to exterminate them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, sure, but later, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And if we make friends with them, what then? They rekidnap Yvette," who is 100% alive and fine, "and bring her over to us? They could've done this already if they wanted to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I doubt they'd do that, I'm thinking more like. Assist in direct physical confrontations. Because it'd be very boring if you got your ass kicked and then got stuffed in a jar forever, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think I'm so outclassed that I have no fighting chance. I can read Nai's intentions directly if he's not shielding and his body language if he is, the best he can do is try to interpret our sisters' translations, so when it comes to immediate battlefield tactics I have a leg up. ...but yeah, maybe, I guess. I'm not sure what Zazi could help with other than maybe provide a city-sized worm."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Iunno. They're crafty as fuck, I doubt the only way they could help is by giant worm. Their knowledge and everywhereness is definitely their biggest asset, not having big thing that goes chomp. Anyway, I'm just saying, maybe think about it. You want to win more than you want to get revenge, yeah?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I want Yvette back, and safe. Everything else is secondary."

Permalink Mark Unread

"... Even casualties of the civilian variety?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Please don't make me have to choose. I, I don't, I don't know what I'd choose."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wasn't planning to, I want to know which way you'd flip in advance. Doubt she'd appreciate that, anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know," he says, anguished. "I, if, I think I'd." He swallows dryly. "I don't know. This is why I didn't want to, to be in love with her. Because now I don't know what I'll choose."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I get it. Nevermind, sorry for asking," sighs Morgan, who has indeed run into something akin to this topic before. She just wants to know what to prioritize, okay!!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, he can't really offer much guidance here. "I'll be able to talk to my sisters any minute, now."

Permalink Mark Unread

And Knives will probably be able to notice that Zash is present at around the same time.

"Tell 'em I said hi."

Permalink Mark Unread

He might hear something before his sisters, actually. Just from sheer familiarity, and also the fact that this voice in particular is psychically screaming.

Permalink Mark Unread

"—YVETTE," and yeah okay fuck this fucking car he is now accelerating to maximum speed.

Permalink Mark Unread

This jostles his passenger, who does not quite fall over, but it's a near thing.

"WOAH what the hell we're heading towards her man????"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's, there's, something's happening I can hear her—"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What, like. On the psychic plant network??? How???"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know!!!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fuck, okay. ... But she's definitely, obviously alive, though?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alive and being tortured is still bad. So it really depends on how badly she's getting tortured."

Permalink Mark Unread

“That’s better than dead!” Usually. “... Wait why would they be torturing her. The hell would that even get them??"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know she's not being coherent and my sisters aren't either. Nai... seems busy? He's not hiding but my sisters can't get his attention."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not saying fucking ask her I'm saying think about it. Knives does torture when people piss him off, but how does that attach her to the psychic plant network??"

Permalink Mark Unread

"—sorry my mind is all over the place. I... have no idea. It's her, it's absolutely her, not just my sisters relaying, but—Conrad experimenting on her?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right, but why would he experiment on her? When he wants new subjects, those are easy, and younger the better for Doctor Psycho, for growth pattern science reasons or whatever." She frowns. "... Maybe not experimenting. I know the doctor wants to die, and Knives won't let him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're gonna need to follow that chain of logic a couple of steps further here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm just thinking that the engineer that specializes in saving and healing plants would be hella valuable to them, actually. So. They probably want to keep her. And are making that happen."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They're. Making her immortal? Like Conrad?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean I don't know, I'm not there, but that's my best guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That... that..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...that would be the best possible news."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It might also mean she can't leave. But yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I said that Brad's arcology is the safest place on this planet but if Nai isn't hurting you I think February beats it. —still bad but, but I was afraid she'd be—"

Permalink Mark Unread

“Yeah, I know. Better than the worst option. Don’t celebrate yet, though. February might be safer from like, siege or outside attack? But it’s filled with an ever changing cast of psychos. Plus, do you think she’d like being trapped somewhere?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, she would hate it, but I'm really having a hard time not being relieved here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Man I do not work in complicated feelings shit, feel whatever you want. I'm just trying to keep a realistic perspective of the situation at hand."

Because someone in this car has been bad at that when it comes to anything involving one person in particular.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, I know. I don't think any of this changes anything. ...except that I won't try to kill my brother I guess, it wouldn't have worked anyway but this way I won't waste my time with it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Well. ... Can you slow down a bit, you're going to break the car. It's in the manual, it's not supposed to go this fast for long periods of time."

Permalink Mark Unread

...fine. He can slow down the car.

And he'll send Yvette a pulse of love.

Permalink Mark Unread

The reply is confused and weak and more than a little delirious with pain, but there is one.

[.... Zash...?]

But recognition is about all she can manage right now.

Permalink Mark Unread

!

!!!!!

[Yes my love it's me I love you so much I'm coming I'll rescue you—]

Permalink Mark Unread

[hurts, hurts hurts hurts]

Then:
[love]

[consent is not one of your brother's kinks]

Permalink Mark Unread

[??????]

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, she's in no condition to be more coherent than that, it's back to being in agony.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yvette just said, and I quote, 'consent is not one of your brother's kinks.'

"What the fuck."

Permalink Mark Unread

"... yeah, no fucking idea what to do with that. So I concur. What the fuck."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She didn't mean it literally, I'm pretty sure, I think his sexuality is even more offline than mine, but... Whatever's happening is something she might've wanted to say yes to? So it's not that bad?

"Wishful thinking."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You might be reading too much into it, I wouldn't take too much stock in what someone says under torture, but yeah, that'd be nice. Uh, entrance to the compound is over thataway," she points.

Permalink Mark Unread

THATAWAY GO GO GO GO wait no just go go go go he shouldn't go too fast but HE WANTS TO.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sigh.

"Okay, we're close enough that you can go turbo without probably breaking the car."

Permalink Mark Unread

TURBO GO GO GO GO GO GO

Permalink Mark Unread

Morgan has had like a month of putting up with this kind of shit. It’s one of the reasons she’s been sleeping so much.

"Entrance there," she says, pointing at a large rock that doesn't particularly stand out from the rest of the available rocks.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay he actually has to slow down now for this. "What am I looking for?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nothing, I'll get out of the car and open it. I was supposed to bring you here, remember?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...right." So he drives over there, pulls up, and gets off.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're finally here!" says a suddenly appearing hivemind. "At that rate we thought you were never—"

Permalink Mark Unread

Whoops his finger slipped into his gun's trigger. Six times.

Permalink Mark Unread

"—rude!" they call after recoalescing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You stole his girlfriend," sighs Morgan, as she gets out of the car and gets to getting the entrance open. This involves poking a bit of rock and then offering her hand up to a keypad that appears. Then the rock lifts up, and there's a ramp large enough to accept a vehicle.

"And now drive in, we'll park inside and take the elevator down."

Permalink Mark Unread

He shoots Zazi a dirty look and gets back into the car.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Zazi starts sending some bugs into it too.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you trying to convince me to exterminate you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ooo! Scary!"

Permalink Mark Unread

The other bugs coalesce into a second body. "Don't be a spoilsport, we just want to watch."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Zazi's likely got a bunch of themselves already down there through like, a dozen other entrances that they know about. Half of which they probably made. They're just fucking with you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They are succeeding and if they think I am above chasing down every single spore left on this planet until no worm is ever born again—"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, Mr. Zash, don't spoil it! We want to be surprised." Body 1 disperses. "Especially after you see what we did to Yvette—"

Permalink Mark Unread

He slams the door shut. "Get in, Wolfwood."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ahuh."

In she goes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zazi prods him some more but he just ignores them and follows Morgan's directions.

Permalink Mark Unread

The car is parked in a sensible little garage that looks like it's for exactly this purpose, and then from there they ride an elevator down.

Morgan doesn't know precisely where Yvette is, but she knows where Conrad's human experimentation labs are. So she takes Zash there. Zash can likely triangulate which part of it Yvette's in.

Permalink Mark Unread

It helps that she's still screaming.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, at that point he just sprints. There are many corners here and he keeps hitting minor dead ends but he's still running at the speed of an independent plant so he finds his destination quickly enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

The room Dr. Conrad is in is spacious and has two doors into a lower level split into two rooms, as well as large windows overlooking both rooms. Each of them has an operating table; one of them has Yvette, and the other has Nai.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah now Conrad has a gun to his temple.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You don't want to do that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What are you doing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Linking Ms. Marlowe to your brother's gate so she can become a plant hybrid."

Permalink Mark Unread

Wait what.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dr. Conrad continues working on whatever's going on in the computer. "She will appreciate your presence."

Permalink Mark Unread

...he'll walk over to the window to look at her, the arm holding his gun hanging limply at his side.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yvette's table is a mess of gore, and she herself isn't looking much better. There's bruising all over her body (as her cells are forcibly replaced from the inside out) and tears from where she thrashed too hard against the tubes going into her. Her hair's gone white, not from stress, but because the newly grown hair follicles from her several-times-over-replaced scalp just come in white. On a molecular level, they were the closest stand in to her human hair that was plant compatible. She isn't capable of properly physically screaming, there seems to be a bite guard in place to keep her from biting her own tongue off, but she is more than making up for it psychically. He can feel her fury and her violation and her pain. She has a vague understanding of how she got here, and what's happening, and she's really fucking mad about it, actually.

But she can, vaguely, tell that Zash is here, and she quiets her screaming (just a little) to reach for him. It hurts so much. She loves him and missed him and why the fuck is she being treated like this they could have fucking asked first, she could have braced or something!!! She could have been attached to Zash's gate instead of sharing one with a guy she SORT OF WANTS TO STRANGLE RIGHT NOW.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why. Did you do this. Why are you doing this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Master Knives did not want her to die."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zash turns around to glare at him. "I got that part already."

(Psychically he is sending her all his love and more, he is so happy she's alive, he's so relieved, he is fucking livid at Nai but he loves her so so much he will be here with her for as long as this takes—)

Permalink Mark Unread

"You will have to ask your brother."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you're going to tell me that I can't disturb him for reasons."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, actually. She has been successfully connected to his gate, now. The connection is still fragile, however, so you might want to hold off on seriously hurting him because it might hurt her."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zash growls and then kicks the metal door leading down to Nai's half of the room until it's been entirely bent out of his way so he can go yell at his brother.

Permalink Mark Unread

[don't worry love]

[I got there first]

Nai has had to deal with directly having a screaming, angry, agonized woman directly hooked into his gate and showing him all of the things he fucking did wrong.

Permalink Mark Unread

She does not, on principle, object to this procedure. She even kind of wanted it herself, because she's not a fucking idiot. However, consider:

If sex is equivalent to the intimacy of being entwined to someone on a psychic level, through his gate and personhood itself.

Then rape is equivalent to this.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does he want to know what it's like on the other side of things? To be powerless and weak and at the mercy of his lazy fucking whims? To watch the destruction caused by how he didn't want to bother to go find a better human to be his instrument to act upon the world? To have her efforts to improve the world (and there's an echo of her grief and rage of Jeneora) casually torn apart by him because he didn't want to bother listening to the other side of things? Because he was certain he was right and righteous and correct in all things?

Here it is. This is what you, Nai, have done to her, Yvette. On a personal level. Hint: it's not nice.

Permalink Mark Unread

She thinks that she might be able to kill him. Actually, she even sort of wants to. There's probably even a clever way she could hijack his gate from him and make it her own, if she were motivated enough.

He was incorrect. She is not a plant. There was no grand conspiracy from the networked plants of December. She is and always was human. She is not an endless font of goodness and empathy and kindness. She has all of those things, but because she's nurtured them. Because she cherished them. Because she wanted to be good and empathetic and kind.

With his actions, he has been stealing the opportunities for humans to nurture the virtues he so loves. Then he has been condemning them for not being good enough. He wants to know how she was able to be so good when all of the humans he's met aren't? Here's his answer, or at least part of it, and it's very simple. December is very fucking far from Julai. She was safe and comfortable enough to have space to try to be good. To grow strong enough to be good when it's hard, when it sucks. Probably there are humans that are better than she is, that don't need this kind of safety, but it's obvious from her sense of self that she absolutely needed it.

If he'd had his way, she might have been born, but she's not sure she could ever have been the sort of person she is now.

The sort of person who will not kill him, actually. Even though she kind of wants to.

Permalink Mark Unread

She knows, and is in fact making herself know, that... he didn't mean for this to happen. He was like-a-child, spoiled and impatient and used to always getting his way. He meant well. He always meant well. The urge to defend his sisters and to immortalize her is real and pure and true and is precious and should be cherished.

Just he needs to grow the fuck up about it, because implementation is more important than intention.

Stop it, idiot. Or you'll keep doing this.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh. Right. He's in love with her. And there's a good reason for it. Yeah.

Permalink Mark Unread

And with this context, it turns out that the reason Nai is unresponsive is that he is... doing the mental equivalent of whimpering. Or crying. Or something. He's not hiding, but he's. Extremely not okay. And extremely not wanting to be bothered.

Permalink Mark Unread

...you know what, dumbass, you made your bed now lie in it. Zash is certain he'll have sympathy for his twin later but right now he actually doesn't want to yell at Nai anymore. He wants to be with his girlfriend it's complicated.

He climbs back up the stairs, pets the door he kicked down in apology, and then walks to the other one (which the doctor helpfully opened for him) then goes downstairs to Yvette's half of the room.

"Hi, love," he says, and there are so, so many different things he's saying with this, and she can hear them now. He is so impressed with her. She is so brave, and so good. He loves her. He missed her. He was terrified but he shouldn't have been, of course his amazing hypercompetent girlfriend it's complicated would figure it out. It was very silly of him to expect otherwise. He's sorry he took so long, he could've stopped Nai if he'd been quicker, and he's sorry she's in so much pain and he will be with her for this.

Permalink Mark Unread

[don't be stupid Zash]

(It is hard to be perfectly efficient in a complicated world, and he shouldn't beat himself up over it. He's a person. He's flawed. He makes mistakes. But he deserves the same care and treatment he offers to everyone else. He's doing his best, and that's more valuable than all the perfect efficiency in the world.)

[of course I can be your girlfriend/partner/wife/lover]

(It is ridiculous and silly for them to not be together. They're in love. They've got complementary life goals and skillsets. The trouble he's had putting a name to her is [=] to the trouble she's had putting a name to him. How about they stop that and make it official.)

[you're stuck with me now]

Permalink Mark Unread

[also FUCKING HELL DOES THIS HURT]

Permalink Mark Unread

[love love love love love love love love...]

[I need to make you a ring to make it official]

[you're alive you'll live forever we can stay together forever] [love love love love love love love]

(He's not even being very stupid, right now, because even self-flagellation takes a back seat when he's so overwhelmed with relief and love and, and, and...)

Permalink Mark Unread

...oh.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's crying now.

That's. That's a thing that's happening right this second.

He's not sure when it started, he hasn't cried in... decades, probably. Hasn't allowed himself to. But he is so completely, thoroughly, vastly overwhelmed with feeling right now, he was so scared that she was dead, he tried not to think about it but he's actually very bad at not thinking about terrible things and this was the most terrible possible thing, and now she's. She's fine. She's in a lot of pain, and he's so sorry about that, but she's alive and he hopes she'll forgive him if he even cherishes her pain a little bit because it means she's alive and she's gonna live forever with him and—

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah he's gonna be ugly sobbing for a while.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sends him her love all the while. She's just so glad that he's here. She loves him so much.

Permalink Mark Unread

And eventually, after a period of time neither of them are in any state to keep track of, her body stops being at war with itself.

[love]

[check to see if I'm done, please]

[because I desperately need a shower]

Regenerating all of her cells didn’t get rid of the old ones. Those instead paint everything unfortunate enough to be anywhere near her. She is really, truly covered in her own gore.

Permalink Mark Unread

[I will]

He's managed to stop crying in that time, but he's not exactly presentable. A lot of the goo she's been expelling got on him, and he doesn't give a shit because she's alive. Back up the stairs he goes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi!"

Permalink Mark Unread

He completely ignores Zazi—it's kind of impressive, really, his eyes don't even snag on the Beast's presence, it's literally like they're wallpaper—and he offers Morgan in the corner there a small smile before turning to the doctor. "Is she done?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not completely, but the part that required her to be there connected to the equipment is over."

Permalink Mark Unread

[I heard that]

[freeeeeee meeeeee]

[this biteguard is uncomfortable]

Permalink Mark Unread

Morgan gives Zash a smile back. But otherwise yes she's just going to keep on sitting here in this corner. To keep Conrad from. ... Conrading.

Permalink Mark Unread

[coming, my love~]

And okay he's perhaps still a little bit mad at Conrad because he unceremoniously turns her restraints into so much scrap metal before pulling them off like they're tissue paper. He's more careful with the biteguard because it's his love's precious face and he doesn't want to hurt her but it is soon enough off.

Permalink Mark Unread

[good riddance] is what she says of the equipment. Best that this gets destroyed sooner rather than later, so it's never ever used again.

"Thanks," she murmurs, and with the bite guard off she can give him a proper smile. Then she sits up, looking pained. "Nnngh."

[still hurt/sore/regenerating or something]

[don't think I can walk (without embarrassing myself)]

[carry me?]

She then sends him directions to the room in which she'd been staying, and the wonderful shower therein. Because: holy shit, regenerating every cell in your body several times over is messy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course he'll carry her, even if she could fly he would carry her, he might need to be physically attached to her at all times for the next month. When he's back upstairs he ignores Zazi once again, and this time he's also added Conrad to his list of people to ignore. Morgan, though, he kind of still likes even if she kind of was betraying them in a way? He doesn't know, it's confusing, he doesn't have room in his heart right now for anything other than being in love.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Nai left his own operating table and vanished away somewhere before Morgan arrived.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She does reach out for Nai as they go, because she can at least always talk to him, wherever he's gone. Probably find him, too, but he doesn't want to be found and she doesn't want to look. They've had enough intruding on each other's space for a long while.

[I am, for the most part, grateful and appreciative of the results of your actions]

[I forgive you.]

[also I think this is worse for you than for me now]

[wheee, immortality~ :D]

Permalink Mark Unread

[???????]

Permalink Mark Unread

Then, because she's pretty sure he needs it right now, she sends him all of the things she does, in fact, like about him.

He's brave enough to stand up to the whole world and his own twin brother to protect those that can't protect themselves. He's cute and sweet and good at thinking (and also graphs) and it's super clear he was incredibly, insanely handicapped by not being able to read or project to humans. He's been suffering so, for so long, alone and lonely and surrounded by crazy people and unable to see a way out. He should stop hating the human side of him, because it's also the side that gives him agency and foresight and argument. There is good there, there is beauty there. She hopes he can see it, and will love it as his sisters do. As she herself does.

And then she'll leave him alone, because no seriously the poor guy had her yelling in his head for who knows how long, that has got to suck so much.

Permalink Mark Unread

[?]

[:(]

Permalink Mark Unread

[everything okay?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[talking to Nai]

[he needs a hug]

Permalink Mark Unread

And then, because she does notice Nai replying, she sends him a little psychic equivalent of a hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

...yeah okay now that she's fine Zash is kinda able to feel sympathy for him again.

Permalink Mark Unread

At the hug Nai does the psychic equivalent of shrinking away and hiding in a corner.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.

[love] she sends to Nai, and then yes she'll leave him alone.

Permalink Mark Unread

And it is long past time that she had a shower.

Zash... is free to help her with that.

[considering we got kind of interrupted...]

Permalink Mark Unread

[yeah I grew a whole dick for you and here you are thinking about my brother, tsk]

He's absolutely helping her with her shower—or, at least, accompanying her in it, because it hasn't been a month yet so he's still contractually obligated to be touching her at all times.

Permalink Mark Unread

[don't even joke about that you have no idea how goddamned difficult it's been here without you]

[he WALKS AROUND NAKED ALL THE TIME, ZASH]

[identical twin brother!! of the man I love!! right there and koala hugging me with legs and everything!!!!!!!]

Actually, no, they can stop talking about this, they have other things to do. She's still not 100%, but whatever percentage of her is present is Zash's. AHEM.

Permalink Mark Unread

[oh have you been having twin threesome fantasies]

[I wouldn't be totally opposed]

[I'll need to consult my budding sexuality on this later though right now it's just you]

Now, see, there are two nice things about being psychic: he doesn't need to use his mouth for speaking, and they can share all of their emotions and feelings and sensations with each other all the time. That makes it very easy for them to figure out the best ways to make each other feel good. There's a constant stream of [lovelovelove] in the background of everything, and that only makes things better.

Permalink Mark Unread

[just us] she agrees.

Sex as and with a psychic plant hybrid is really really great, actually.

And so are the cuddles in the afterglow.

Permalink Mark Unread

Honestly though the thing where they can just be in each other's minds is still his favourite. He hasn't had this in a century and a half and it feels... so good. He's a plant. He's not meant to be alone, in his head. It feels like finally breathing in after spending most of his life underwater.

[so where did you even get my DNA] is one of the many thoughts that come unbidden to his mind, and which he can just share without having to convert it to words.

Permalink Mark Unread

Being in each other's minds is admittedly also really, really great. She likes it here. It's comfy.

[I am absolutely about to crash though, I don't think I've slept in literal days]

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh.

Oh oh oh they can sleep together and he doesn't have to block his feelings out anymore and have to go under after her and wake up before her for fear of tipping her off. They can just. Share their feelings. And not hold back.

Oh he thinks he might start crying again. Yep, there he goes.

Permalink Mark Unread

[???? you've been doing that???]

[yes you don't have to hold back anymore, never again]

[I'm here I'm here I'm here]

But yeah she's absolutely not going to be able to stay awake to comfort him properly. She'll just fall asleep nestled in his arms, sending a sleepy, unconscious (love)

Permalink Mark Unread

That's okay this time he'll stay up after her only because he's holding her and sobbing. They're good tears, though, and he shares his entire emotional landscape with her while he does it, and listens to her dreams, and just exists alongside her.

Eventually he manages to fall asleep, face still puffy from crying, and in his dreams he can be with her too.

(...he got what he wanted. So why does he feel so wretched?)

Permalink Mark Unread

“I suppose none of them are in any state to go hunt down and kill Legato,” sighs Morgan.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nnnnope. Though we'd hoped there would've been more fighting, it's such a shame there wasn't any!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Truly, my heart, it bleeds. Maybe we should go stop by one of the big cities, see if we can buy several thousand tiny violins for you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Well now Zazi has to make the sound of violins come from nowhere for Morgan. It's only appropriate.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, look, you beat me to it. Good for you." Her eyes slide over to Conrad. "Oi. Doctor. Were you the one responsible for Livio's new cyber-brain fashion accessory."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes." He will not look up at her from the computer for some reason.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why am I not surprised. Oh wait! I've met you. Whatcha doing, there? Important work?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. I am working with Ms. Marlowe's new systems to improve the conditions of some of the plants. I do not have as much familiarity with this side of things but I am doing what I can."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fucking damn it she's corrupting us all," hisses Morgan, suddenly furious. "Fine! Fine. Go ahead, have yourself a fucking blast."

Permalink Mark Unread

He does not ask her what she had hoped he'd been doing instead, or what she wanted to do about it. He doesn't want to know.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmmm this is getting boring, who can we go bother..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Have you considered introducing yourself to humanity at large. Maybe getting yourself some other fucking people to poke."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh we've done that to some people! Did you know some humans have this illness called 'psychosis' where they see and hear things that aren't there? Those are fun!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ahuh. I bet. Hey, bug, do you know how to play chess."

It's one of those things she picked up on the steamer while the lovebirds were busy making eyes at each other and fretting over the plant that was being treated horribly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah!" Does Morgan mind having a floating chess table made out of worm spores? Zazi can make one of those.

Permalink Mark Unread

No, she doesn't mind. Her life is weird as fuck already. They can play.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zash doesn't wake up before Yvette, this time. Partly because he doesn't want to, partly because he hasn't slept in weeks and he has a lot of it to catch up on.

...well not exactly, he still doesn't actually need to need sleep, but he can choose to need it and that's about the same thing. And he's having such great dreams!

Permalink Mark Unread

And Yvette has recently undergone some changes that result in many things, one of them being that she doesn't require as much sleep as she once did.

.... She's never seen Zash sleeping while touching her. He's taken naps in the back or passenger seat of the car while she drives, but not. Right here, in her arms. Where she can feel his dreams and happiness and, and, and himness. She missed him so much. She's been falling asleep alone for what feels like forever.

Probably she should, like, go do important things or something but. ... But. He's so cute and cozy and happy!!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

He doesn't wake up before her, but he does wake up soon after, stirred awake by her own thoughts. "G'morning," he mumbles, yawning hugely.

The bleariness isn't exactly fake, it's just that he could choose not to be bleary if he wanted to. He does not, currently, want to. This is very cosy and he is very happy and he loves her very much and actually waking up in her arms like this is threatening to send him into yet another crying fit.

Get a grip, Stampede.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good morning," she says fondly, petting him.

She is trying very hard not to think about all of the things she's got to get done (research needs to be disseminated and Elendira and oh no she thinks she broke Nai and...) but she's bravely trying to clamp down on those urges because, actually, he does in fact deserve to just have. A lazy morning with the woman he loves. He must have been so worried.

Permalink Mark Unread

He was so worried. So so so worried. But they'll have all of eternity to have lazy mornings together, it's fine if the first morning after her complete transformation and following the series of related events isn't that lazy.

(Zash has decided he doesn't want to use words. Words are for people who aren't psychic.)

In priority order:

Nai is the least urgent of that bit. He'll keep, and some misery directly caused by his own actions is probably good for him. Builds character or something. And going after him while he's still trying to not be found—he's hiding from everyone but Yvette, right now—isn't likely to be very productive.

Disseminating research is important but also not very time-sensitive. There's a chance any given bit of it will help plants but the chance isn't that large and probably bigger chunks of coherent research are more effective. Besides, it's not just a matter of emailing a bunch of people some random equations; they need to work on presentation, on a way to make it reach a very wide audience, on a way to make it be credible enough—and, most importantly, on a way to convince people to stop sucking their plants dry, which is the most critical part of making everything else work as intended.

Elendira is a lot more urgent, what with how she's a murderous psycho, but a little bit of poking the plants turns up that she's not in the compound anymore and Dr. Conrad's best guess is that she went after Legato, who apparently called her an "angel of God". Now, maybe if they fix Nai they can get him to recall his missionary, but Zash suspects it won't be that easy at all.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Yeah, words are dumb and they are psychic. They can just skip those things for right now.)

Oh, good. She's immediately soothed by how he supports her in her ruthless pragmatism. It was in retrospect kind of silly to think that for some reason he wouldn't be immediately and gleefully on board with it. She is very silly. Sorry, love. Having him prioritize is really really helpful and she appreciates him for it. (Having him back is SO GREAT.)

She's not sure how to go after Elendira and ??? Legato, who is that?? oh it's Morgan's asshole ex-boss gotcha gotcha okay yes definitely him too, fuck that guy, while Nai is out of commission. Zazi could track them but she suspects that they wouldn't, and Conrad (the fucker) is already apparently on it, so. .... Uh, Brad, could they get Brad in on it?? Can they contact him? He has resources, and actually now that she thinks of it she bets he can help a bunch with presentation of how to not be an asshole to plants research. (That's what she calls it in her head, it's 'how not to be an asshole.') Oh, oh, wait, since she thought of Morgan, should they check on her to make sure she's not about to die of Conrad running out of time due to her super healing and fix it if they can?? If she dies she's gone forever, something something hook Morgan up to Zash's gate maybe?? That's probably possible, right? Though that should probably wait if it's not a flaming emergency because there is definitely an adjustment period.

It is perhaps becoming apparent that the reason she is so organized and systematic in meatspace is because her brain is a little bit of a mess. She's a little bit all over everywhere.

Permalink Mark Unread

He loves her so much.

So, he, uh... expects hooking anyone to his gate will not be straightforward at all, what with how, uh, he doesn't actually have direct access to his own gate. There are some things he can do sort of on intuition but direct manipulation? No. They'd probably need Nai for that, too, and maybe even Conrad, though if he doesn't miss his guess—and he doesn't, the plants are just now confirming that this thought he's having is [=] to some thoughts Conrad's had—Conrad kind of wants Yvette to take over all of his (good, useful) research and finally be allowed to die. So maybe she could figure out how to do it.

Brad's team can probably help with presentation! Communication is difficult, the reason the arcology's managed to be secret this long is that it's actually a repurposed ship and it has an artificial sandstorm surrounding it at all times and it moves with the sandstorm. Kind of like a sand steamer, but way more competent at it; he's pretty sure even Nai wouldn't be able to find it. There are some drop locations he can leave a message at and some other drop locations where he can fetch a message from, and he's got practice at not thinking about those explicitly so even though the plants could fetch it from his innermost thoughts they'll respect his request not to. But all that said, there's no fast way to contact them, which is another part of their security measures. They are, effectively, cut off from the external world except at semi-random intervals in semi-random locations.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, yes, fine, she will not throw her own beloved into the grinder of suddenly sharing a gate with someone else. Especially after she so thoroughly yelled at Nai about doing that exact thing. It's just that she worries, okay. Her feelings about Morgan are a little complicated right now because apparently she was lying to them and attempting to get Zash here, but Zash clearly (kinda?) trusts her so she's fine going with that. Whatever their complicated feelings for the child super soldier are, she doesn't want her to die.

Okay, so, yes they should see about contacting Brad, but that will take a while to get an answer back from.

Conrad... wants her presence to mean that he's allowed to die. Huh. Well, she's kind of fine with this. She's not sure if she could just take over all his research, though? They work in very different spheres of science, but, well. She does have forever now, doesn't she. She'll see about trying to pick up all of his work so they can all be rid of him.

Also maybe they should stop trying to tactics and instead tell each other all that's happened while they've been apart? That seems like it might be smart.

Permalink Mark Unread

They can do that! Has he mentioned he loves her? Because he does, he really does. This thought has been brought by being reminded of THAT BEAUTIFUL CHECKLIST. She is the best and she was so so so correct that he and Morgan absolutely needed it, they were SO out of their depth with that car. They didn't even realise they had to CHARGE the car, that's how out of their depth they were.

Permalink Mark Unread

....

Wow, uh. When she'd made it she had thought she was being a bit overzealous and that it was just an excuse to do something with her unspoken adoration of him instead of pining. She's glad it came in handy but really??? You forgot to charge the car??????

She loves him, how the hell did he function without her for a hundred and fifty years.

Permalink Mark Unread

He walked. He thought they'd had this conversation before? He just walked.

Permalink Mark Unread

But that's so inefficient!

Anyway, yes, fine, moving on. Here is what she has been doing while she's here. She. She maybe kind of accidentally seduced his brother? Sorry?? And also she has, like, so much data on how to help plants now, it is insane, there was literally not a better place for her to be than February when it came to proving how INCREDIBLY AND TOTALLY RIGHT SHE WAS, AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zash should probably stop repeating how much he loves her every time she has any thoughts like some holy litany but has he mentioned he loves her? He loves her. A lot.

Also, really, she seduced Nai? ...well, does she like Nai back? Maybe they could come to some arrangement.

One thing that, uh, might be somewhat relevant and which he already suspected but which the plants here are able to see better: the way he feels about Nai is [=] to the way Nai feels about him and the way he feels about Yvette is [=] to the way he feels about Nai. And now that he's asking them they are indeed confirming that the way Nai feels about her is... well, not [=] to the way the little V with Zash as a hinge does but it's, like, directionally correct.

Permalink Mark Unread

But, but. Incest??? Wait they're all nonhuman people that will likely never breed and she was kind of uncomfortable purposefully making a person on this dustball and she's probably just bringing in her own weird human hangups into this extremely unique relationship and also this was not among her list of potential possibilities and she really feels like Nai needs to grow a bunch as a person before she's willing to hit that so if you'll excuse her she's just going to hide in his arms from all of the scary things, please and thank you.

Permalink Mark Unread

All very fair considerations! And it's not really romantic exactly anyway, it's more of a—uh, unfortunately this is still telepathy so he's going to have various vague thoughts related to this if they don't change the subject so if she wants him to not think those thoughts maybe they should talk about something else?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, she is seeing some downsides of telepathy, but it's still totally worth it because he loveloveloves her, and she loves him back, and it's honestly just really great to hang out in the mind of someone she loves and is loved by.

... oh you know what this means, right, Zash?? SHE CAN TALK TO PLANTS NOW. HI! HI PLANTS, she's sorry, she was distracted and is still getting adjusted to this whole hybrid whatever thing that she is, but hi all of you she loves you very much and they are looking GREAT on that helping people project!!

Permalink Mark Unread

They love her right back!!!!!

And also, uh, she will learn two things: one, wow Zash was very much still doing a lot of translation legwork even when he was starting to get distracted; two, she does not have any automated methods of turning plant psychic output into human-readable output. Her mind is still very much her own, as she had it before, and she is now being—well, probably the right word for this is "dogpiled"—she is now being dogpiled by dozens upon dozens of plants who all LOVE HER VERY MUCH and are SO HAPPY SHE CAN HEAR THEM NOW they really enjoy all the work she's been doing even if they don't understand it at all.

(Hey! Hey! Does she remember the ones from Jeneora? They remember her from then! They were happy to meet her! And the sand steamer one, too, though Yvette managed to talk more directly to that one then.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She is buried under a pile of adoration. It's overwhelming, but also kind of great. Extremely cozy, even if she absolutely cannot pick out most of the details of... anything they're saying. She's trying but there's only one of her and many of them.

One thing does stand out to her among the din of love. YES of course she remembers the ones from Jeneora, how could she have forgotten? The answer is she could not have. And hi [sand steamer plant], she can just say your name now!!! It's very exciting, that she can do that!! And they're all SO CUTE she loves them SO MUCH look at them all!!

Permalink Mark Unread

There are many conversations happening. She may get the impression that actually... the plants themselves... can in fact not keep track of all the conversations that are happening. They are not great at impulse control and they are all talking to and at Yvette at the same time even though they can't keep full track of each other.

They don't particularly mind not being directly responded to, though. They're perfectly happy to just be in her psychic presence, watch her thoughts and emotions in reaction to what's happening, and sort of do the psychically not-silent-at-all equivalent of being in companionable silence. Companionable chaotic crowding and chattering, if you will.

(The ones from Jeneora are concerned about Jeneora. Is it okay? What happened there after Nai found them? That bomber guy was very scary!! They loved him too but he was very strange and very scary, they wish he hadn't been so scary so much at everyone...)

Permalink Mark Unread

This will absolutely become overwhelming soon enough, but for now it's still very charming. Adorable little chatterboxes, aren't they.

Even though... she does now have to answer awkward questions.

They're all doing this by thought, so it's immediately obvious, and she can't really sugarcoat it: Jeneora is not okay. She doesn't know a lot of the specifics, because she had to leave (because they asked her to leave and also she had the sand steamer plant to help), but. Yeah. :( And she doesn't think just putting them back will just fix it, she's pretty sure the humans scattered to the wind. She wants to just put them back and make sure they don't get sick and can help everyone forever and ever, but. Specifics pending. She'll have to investigate and figure out the best way to maximize their assistance onto the world. In ways that will not kill them, anyway, because they are precious and furthermore if they die they can't help anyone at all.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh.

Oh they don't like that.

All of them, actually, are immediately taken over by grief when Yvette's thoughts about what happened there are echoed by Zash's. Dozens upon dozens of plants, all grieving for the lost humans in unison, the ones lost to death and the ones lost to the wind. They know their names, and they miss them. They start sharing thoughts of all of those people with each other—mostly just the two from Jeneora sharing their thoughts with their sisters, but a couple of Jeneorans had visited other cities so some other plants can supply a little bit more.

Plants can't cry, but if they could, they would be.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not all plants can cry.

But some can.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.

She holds her Zash and pets him and shares in grief. She'd already cried about it, and then quietly grieved, and then unquietly grieved, by throwing it all in Nai's face as a weapon (sorry), so she's... too emotionally exhausted on the subject to shed anymore tears. But yeah. It sucks. She is unhappy. :(

Permalink Mark Unread

When, exactly, was the last time he cried? Not since... since...

...not since February. Not since Luida.

Fitting, then, that it's here that he's letting himself feel the grief and the pain of the past hundred and forty years. That it's here that the dams have all broken and he's feeling the flood of emotion. He'd kinda hoped it would just happen once and then he'd be done with it, but no, it seems like he's just... gonna be set off by stuff. At random times. Just be hit with the need to bawl his eyes out.

Well, he supposes "all of the plants simultaneously grieving for the people lost in Jeneora" is not that random a time to grieve. But he's pretty sure this isn't going to be the last time.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's okay. He's more than allowed to cry. She loves him and he's been alone for so long.

Though, now she wants to go and DO SOMETHING about the source of their sadness, that being humans dying. It is bad and should not be. Is there a way she can make him portable so he can be snuggled and loved by her while her brain gets busy on how to save the world? Probably there's a newsfeed, uh, somewhere in here, she can get an idea of the sociopolitical situation of the world and how to put some plants back for maximum people saving? Hmm...

Permalink Mark Unread

He can't be made portable but he can, at least, hold her hand while they go find... somewhere... with a computer? Also she has human nudity taboos, right, she's gonna want to find clothes that aren't currently in an irrecoverable state from having been subjected to her transformation procedure, does she have any? Zash's own clothes were kind of also subjected to her transformation procedure and although they'll eventually regenerate in the meantime he should find something else.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, Zash, she was going to put on clothes first. That wasn’t in question, but it’s cute that he remembered. She has extra sets, she’s been here a while. He probably won’t fit into her clothes, though, so uh. … does he have any spare in the car?

Anyway yes she can put on clothes. This is slightly complicated by needing to be touching him at all times, but not by very much.

Permalink Mark Unread

He doesn't have spares, no, he doesn't produce any kinds of human waste including sweat if he doesn't want to so it's usually just dust and blood and then he just washes and/or regenerates his clothes. They can probably find something? He's, uh, still a bit distracted by the grief and not in top shape w.r.t. problem-solving.

Permalink Mark Unread

Very reasonable. She will solve it for him, then.

His clothes are much less completely unsalvageable than the set that was unfortunate enough to contain her while she was changed. Therefore: they will be washed to get most of the ick out. From there, is he fine wearing damp clothes that will dry quickly even in this climate controlled underground environment, or is more problem solving required?

Permalink Mark Unread

Nah he's fine. Damp clothes can go on.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay then! Off to get back to work while gently tugging along a beloved by the hand, sending love at him all the while.

Permalink Mark Unread

There are probably multiple places with computers on this compound but the ones Yvette is most familiar with would be that one room she had her procedure in (haha no) and the plants room, so plants room-wards they go.

It's a long enough walk that Zash mostly manages to get himself back together. It helps that the plants are also moving on from their familiar grief and no longer looping over it.

Permalink Mark Unread

But there's someone already in there when they get there. He was floating in front of one of the tanks but he turns around when they walk in and... makes some kind of facial expression.

Through the link Yvette has with him she'll be able to pretty easily identify the emotions he's feeling. Or, well, perceive them; he doesn't know what emotions it is he's feeling and that makes it harder. They're overall not entirely positive, even though there is definitely a strong undercurrent of relief and happiness at seeing Yvette alive and well. Plus something... a lot more bittersweet... about seeing Zash.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wait had he been in this room all along? How did the plants not—oh, right. He's been psychically hiding himself from everyone and the plants themselves seldom use their eyes to perceive the world so he's probably just been here and they never thought to look.

Well, this is awkward.

Permalink Mark Unread

Super, super awkward.

[love/reassurance] she sends to Nai, gently and tentatively. [do you want/need space...?]

Which is a complicated sort of thing to send, but basically amounts to if he would like to avoid her she will cooperate with that because she doesn't want to hurt him (anymore), and generally speaking she wishes him well.

Permalink Mark Unread

He slowly floats down to the platform, eyes darting between the two of them. Even with the connection to Yvette that he can't shut down, it continues to be very difficult to read him. Eventually his eyes settle on Zash and he says, "Your clothes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"—hm?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They're wet.

"Why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Zash starts giggling. And then goes from giggling to laughter, and then from laughter to full-belly teary-eyed howling guffaws. He's holding onto Yvette's hand but that's as much as he can manage as the laughter starts to rock his whole body and he has to lean against her to not fall over.

Permalink Mark Unread

...why is he being like that??

Permalink Mark Unread

It helps that Yvette isn't trying to read him, because uh. Sharing a gate. Give the poor man some space after she kind of threatened to kill him. That sort of thing.

"They were gross and needed to be washed. So I washed them," she answers, also looking at Zash with some confusion. As she dutifully keeps him from falling over while he laughs. She's in his head and she's not entirely sure why he's laughing. Something about it being very mundane and also very him?

Permalink Mark Unread

Zash can't hide from Nai and yet Nai still can't figure out why this is happening.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Come, here, you, dork," he says, drawing big breaths between the words because he might pass out from the lack of air. He doesn't need air but still.

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks at Yvette. Then at Zash. Then at Yvette again.

[help?]

Permalink Mark Unread

"I said, come here, you, idioticmonumentally stupidfuckingdork!!!!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...you're insulting me."

But he does... walk over... to them???

Permalink Mark Unread

[he missed you terribly and wants to hug you] she provides.

[... I sort of want to hug you too.]

Permalink Mark Unread

...he's so confused??????

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah fuck him, Zash is pulling him into a hug and leaving space for Yvette to join them if she wants to.

Permalink Mark Unread

She checks (with Zash, since he seems to know Nai's mind better than Nai himself, and also she's trying not to creepily stare into his fucking soul) that this would be okay, and then. Yes hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zash arranges the three of them so that Nai is effectively sandwiched, and now he's no longer laughing too much to support himself but he's still grinning.

Permalink Mark Unread

oh.

Nai starts crying.

Permalink Mark Unread

[you idiot, you dork, you fucking asshole, I hate you so much, I want to fucking kill you why are you like this you ass]

Like this, so emotionally inept, the first thing he says to them is about Zash's clothes being wet, Zash missed his non-sequiturs so much, missed his adorably confused face, missed his mind

Permalink Mark Unread

—(which he, at some point, stopped hiding, because there's no point in hiding apparently, apparently Zash at some point in the last century and a half learned how to read him even without telepathy which is the most bullshit possible thing but if Nai had to guess who would be able to figure that out of course it would've been Zash)—

Permalink Mark Unread

—and he is going to yell at Nai so much, but later, because what Nai needs to do right now is get a hug from his two favourite people in the world.

Permalink Mark Unread

How does Zash know

Permalink Mark Unread

It's fucking obvious you doofus!!!!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

Yvette helpfully draws a parallel between her work mapping out possibilities of things-that-can't-be-directly-perceived via bits of data that one can see, and this! They are not exactly alike but the principle is [~] rather closely equivalent. That's how!

Regardless, he is getting such hugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

...the parallel does, in fact, help.

"You're still wet," he says with his facemouth because his brainmouth is kind of not fully online.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then fucking fix it, you're made of bullshit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm made of Nai." But he can, in fact, make the water quickly evaporate off Zash's clothes.

He's kinda still crying. And very confused. And confused about his confusion.

He doesn't even know what to ask!!!!! Why is he being hugged? He thought they hated him? Or, at least, were very very mad at him? Not "get better overnight" mad, "actually really for real very mad" mad!!!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes you are," agrees Yvette, amused.

So... they kind of are really mad at him? But there is a time for the sharp scalpel of judgement, and there is a time for gentle hugs of healing to help steer him towards being comfy/happy/correct-to-himself. They have had enough of the former, it is clearly time for the latter. So he's getting hugged because they care about the [Nai-template-source] over being mad at [Knives-he-made-himself]. This was a bad path that they want to steer him away from, but they do in fact still love him and want him to be okay.

Permalink Mark Unread

...

He hates Knives but he still needs to be Knives—

Permalink Mark Unread

No! He! Doesn't! For god's sake, Nai, get out of your own head for ten fucking minutes and listen to the people who love you and let them help you figure this out.

Permalink Mark Unread

...but the plants—

Permalink Mark Unread

He thinks Nai has ample evidence that both Zash and Yvette are going to be able to figure out how to make the plants not hurt. Forever. They can do this, and will Nai listen to them and stop listening to Knives and understand that Knives is unnecessary. Knives has always been unnecessary, Zash has been trying to tell him this for a century and a half and he just won't listen

Permalink Mark Unread

But—

Permalink Mark Unread

No buts! Shut up and be hugged!

Permalink Mark Unread

okay

Permalink Mark Unread

Huuuuuug.

Nai seems to be doing something called the sunk cost fallacy! It is where people, who have previously invested time/energy/effort/sacrifice to accomplish something, stop questioning if continuing on that particular course of action is still the best idea or not. Because if they stop, all of their previous investment is wasted. Except this is not how things work; circumstances change, investments don't justify returns just because they seem like they should, and thinking like this can lock someone on a path that is not the most optimal.

Does he sincerely think that being Knives is actually necessary, with all of the evidence in front of him, if he re-evaluates right now, as if he is starting here and had no previous history with the subject?

Permalink Mark Unread

He doesn't know!!!! Yes? No??? Maybe????? He hasn't done the maths and he can't, he can't just do what feels nice because what feels nice is just believing them and being sorry and apologising and having to, to, to face, to

Permalink Mark Unread

to face everything he's done

Permalink Mark Unread

and if everything he's done was wrong, then what does that make him, how will he be able to live with himself if he was wrong, he can't have been wrong

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep. Sunk cost fallacy, right there. See the pattern of thought? [=]

And... she's not entirely sure, it's his own path to walk and it is indeed scary and daunting and seems impossible. It's the kind of thing that begins one step at a time, taking each day as it comes. He can climb a mountain, if he just starts walking in the right direction. And humans really have messed up, too, and Nai really has saved many plants from their stupidity. It is and was grey and messy and awful. She thinks that instead of beating himself up over being wrong, or trying to pretend that he was never wrong, he should re-evaluate everything as if he is starting from scratch. Who is he now, and how does he want to conduct himself in these circumstances?

She is absolutely certain that he's strong enough to admit when he makes a mistake (because everyone makes mistakes) and grow.

Permalink Mark Unread

He much preferred his hugging sessions when they didn't involve reevaluating his whole life.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Nai. Stop. Breathe. We're here for you. You don't need to figure everything out right now. You don't need to figure anything out right now. You can just... exist here. With us. Think about something else. Talk about something else. Not everything has to be about this.]

Permalink Mark Unread

But it has been about this, everything has been about this, that's who Knives is, and if he isn't Knives then he doesn't have... anyone else to be. What does he even talk about, what does he even think about, if not this?

Permalink Mark Unread

Zash has a sug—

Permalink Mark Unread

—heeeeey it turns out when his sexuality is online he suddenly starts coming up with all sorts of innuendos and sexually charged suggestions without having to even think about it hahahahaha who'da thunk.

Permalink Mark Unread

...why is human reproduction related to anything here.

He guesses that's a different topic but ??????

Permalink Mark Unread

… yeah, sorry, this is her fault. She brought human sexuality into this equation. With her existence and presence and libido. She owns up to it. She’s the corrupting influence here. Look it’s, it’s nice and pleasant and biologically beneficial. Also, it’s kind of one of the closest things humans have to the sort of mental intimacy plants have. Not exactly the same, but [~]

Basically, he’s offering it as a pleasant alternative to this complicated and thought driven [conversation], that also displays care and intimacy. Without dumb complicated thoughts getting in the way.

Permalink Mark Unread

By... breeding?

Permalink Mark Unread

Zash sporfles. [that sure is a way to put it.]

[I kind of want to share memories of what it was like but the freshest ones are with Yvette and she probably feels private about it, I can try to dig up some old ones?]

Permalink Mark Unread

She feels... private... about breeding.

????????????????????????????

Permalink Mark Unread

…..

…..

…. No, it’s, it’s fine, he’s allowed to use. Their time together. To show him. What he means. It’s. It’s for bridges of communication and and and it’s. It’s okay. She can consent, none of Zash’s previous partners can do so, and she’s not against someone being introduced to porn human reproductive practices through her.

(But she’s going to be super embarrassed and hide about it. Squeak. Yes she’s sure about this but no she’s not going to look at either of them about it BYE)

Permalink Mark Unread

Here it goes.

(It's kind of hot. He hopes Yvette doesn't mind that he finds it kind of hot.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Humans feel that way about breeding?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Permalink Mark Unread

Evolution has caused humans to have erogenous zones and those trigger emotional responses so yes actually! Humans feel that way about breeding! And other sorts of things that aren't breeding but that involve breeding organs!! And then for some reason humans also evolved erotic responses in body parts that aren't directly used for breeding, such as breasts, or necks, or inner thighs, or...

Permalink Mark Unread

And... they feel private about it. And Zash was suggesting that they do something like that together? Because it feels nice?

Permalink Mark Unread

It wasn't a serious suggestion, it was kind of a joke.

Permalink Mark Unread

He doesn't understand why it's funny.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's funny in a 'playful wordplay that will often unbalance humans' kind of way, because humans are weird about this subject. See: their human right now. Who is still helpfully assisting in translation/communication even while she's slowly turning pink. Look, her ears are now pink!!

(She doesn't mind that Zash finds it hot. ... It is admittedly kind of hot.)

Permalink Mark Unread

So... it's funny because... humans... don't usually breed... and think breeding is a private topic... and so bringing it up breaks the expectation for normal social interactions while... simultaneously being about a social taboo.

How can something be funny when you need to keep track of so many different things for it to make sense???

Permalink Mark Unread

He loves Nai so much.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nai kind of feels like he's being made fun of.

Permalink Mark Unread

No, he's legitimately very cute, and human culture sounds incredibly insane when he describes it. It's kind of amazing, especially in contrast to her own experience. As a certified once-human, it was absolutely normal to keep track of lots of these social things because ?? something about humans being very social and liking reliable expectations and set cultures about stuff. She's not entirely sure. She went into engineering, she is not a very social human.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's never going to understand any of this.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes he will, Zash believes in him.

...also Zash is kind of starting to cry again. That's a thing that's happening.

Permalink Mark Unread

...why??? Nai isn't crying anymore and he's the one who had an unexpectedly pleasant surprise after being very sad for a while.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Which is Naispeak for "oh oh oh no I don't know what to do please don't cry why are you crying?? I didn't mean it I swear", Zash helpfully translates to Yvette. While still crying.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(Honestly it's so useful that they can still manage to translate to each other while Having Emotions! Go them.)

Zash is going through an adjustment period and hadn't let himself cry in a very long time; this involves a lot of crying. Which is fine, poor man needs it so much, it's (one of the reasons) why she's required to be in constant physical contact for the foreseeable future. He is crying from relief because he missed Nai so much and here he is, he's back. The Nai Zash loves, not the Knives that Zash had... kind of super complicated feelings about.

Permalink Mark Unread

...but... he was here all along.

Permalink Mark Unread

Was he, actually? Or was it Knives? If Zash walked into February, would it be Nai or Knives that would've greeted him?

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.

He really, really missed you, Nai.

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuuuuuuuuggle. They're really cute and she's really glad they can be together properly now.

.... Do either of them mind if she just, you know, scootches them all over to the console and gets back to some kind of work...? Listen she's an unapologetic workaholic, it's how she copes with things, okay.

Permalink Mark Unread

This is stupid, is what Nai thinks as he unceremoniously floats them all at the same time so they can go be by the console. Why would anyone need to scootch? He is made of Nai. He can do these things.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zash starts sobbing.

Permalink Mark Unread

She mostly meant it in the sense that they all move over here, she wasn't picky about the how! The way he chose to implement the scootching was very cute.

Anyway she's going to start trying to see if she can figure out what the heck is going on in the world through this console. She can still send a message to Conrad, right?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah she can. It's actually pretty simple, and there's a nice intuitive interface. Probably Nai needed to call Conrad often enough that he just made it as painless as possible. There's even a special icon there.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Zash can't float, himself, so he decides it is time for him to pull Nai onto the floor with him so both of them can snuggle while leaning against Yvette's legs. At least 40% of the reason why he's doing this is because it'll be really cute.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(O...kay.)

(Zash you need to fix your gate.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(Nai, Zash loves you but please shut up, he still has very complicated feelings about his gate and his arm and he would rather not deal with that right this second.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(...okay.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent!! Then she can get to directly planning… what to do. How to put the plants back and save as many lives as possible. That sort of thing. She is so incredibly not qualified for this. But she’s all they’ve got, so she’ll try to be enough. At least she has very cute boys she can lean down and pet as she gets stressed.

Refugee crisis: yeah that’s happening. She’s not surprised, but it sure does make her unhappy.

… She’d thought that she couldn’t fix this by just putting the stolen plants back, but actually… that might literally be the best option. The equipment for assisting them in matter creation without straining them too much, and the infrastructure to turn the ultra efficient raw materials into something that’s usable, is definitively not portable. That was all located where the plants that fueled it were. So… her job is to figure out which of the locations that had their plants stolen are closest to as many people as possible. Which are most capable of being able to handle a large influx of very upset, very desperate people. And then, probably, rough estimates of what kind of strain the plants that are put there are going to be under, and how many plants would need to be sent to compensate for that.

Maybe she is qualified for this after all.

Permalink Mark Unread

...they can't just return the plants, the humans are just going to go right back to hurting them!!!

And besides, Nai may have, perhaps, accidentally, in some cases, slightly trashed those places. A little bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well obviously they will be 'returning' the plants that are the healthiest, not just the ones that had been there, and probably in larger numbers than what had been there. The new arrangements will be efficient and kind to the plants because she is good at her job, actually. But he does bring up an excellent point about humans not following the directions their plant engineer (read: now Yvette) gives them and will not accept being told to not fucking touch anything, so they need to have some sort of setup there, too.

Also, can he give her a list of the places he trashed? That'd be very useful for her project of which ones are usable in the future.

Permalink Mark Unread

He doesn't know which ones his minions trashed—he thinks the sand steamer may be a goner?—but he can try to remember them. And he assumes she doesn't want the very old ones? He's been doing this for a century and a half, some of those have probably been consumed by time by now.

Also, Jeneora Rock was not his fault, he adds a touch defensively. If that human hadn't shot at his robot with a grenade launcher—

Permalink Mark Unread

Nai.

Permalink Mark Unread

...grumble grumble. He's sorry. He guesses.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nai.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's sorry, okay?! He didn't mean to destroy the town! It was an accident! Genuinely! He wasn't aiming for the rock with the grenade launcher! He just wanted to grab the plants and go!

Permalink Mark Unread

She pets him. Jeneora Rock was a bit of a mess for a number of reasons, including that bomber that was probably there for her, because plant engineers are valuable. As she is, uh, currently showing and has shown in this facility. She doesn't even really blame him for twitching and getting all plants evacuated after he heard one screaming while being hurt for what was essentially no rational reason. She wasn't aware the rock collapsing was an accident, actually, that makes her feel a bit bad about all of that yelling she did at him. Not entirely, because he really needed it, but... it does color the situation a bit better.

Honestly though, Jeneora is going on the 'mostly intact' end of the spectrum, because while the rest of the town was rubble, the bones of the plant factory were fine! She would know, she was briefly buried alive in there. A town can be rebuilt by ordinary human hands, the infrastructure to handle multiple plants is much harder to come by. In a similar sort of vein, even if the sand steamer was completely and utterly unharmed, it's entirely disqualified. It was built after the Fall, and to only handle a single plant, and shove a lot of the work onto that plant instead of outsourcing it to a factory or human workers. It's basically useless to her purposes and can go rust in the desert for all she cares.

Also if Nai would like to be distracted by work instead of squidgy emotions none of them really know how to deal with: the obvious people to ask about the state of the plant factories at the time the plants were stolen is, you know. The plants themselves. He's better equipped to handle that than she is, would he like to do that?

(Zash is not allowed to have a job. Zash needs cuddles and the reassurance that his two favorite people are A: themselves as he loves them, B: not going to die, and C: being happyish, which is going to be by being little workaholics.)

Permalink Mark Unread

YES screw this whole "feelings" noise he wasn't good at those before being Knives and he's definitely not good at them now. Though he does still want to be hugged and petted so it's good his work can be done entirely telepathically. He's still not amazing at properly translating plants, not as good as Zash is, but he's better than nothing, and he extra does not want to be doing anything other than this.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zash can do it, he's way more used to translating for humans, Nai can just translate them for him and then he could—

Permalink Mark Unread

Did she fucking stutter.

Zash is the mental equivalent of swatted with a rolled up newspaper. No working! None!!

Permalink Mark Unread

...but—

Permalink Mark Unread

It would be against the principles they are operating by for them to have a plant who is currently in recovery to then be put to work despite this being past their comfort/safety threshold.

Which is to say:

NO.

Permalink Mark Unread

...fine. He supposes he is kind of still breaking down in tears at the slightest provocation. But in his defence the slightest provocations present are the two people he loves most having thoughts! And feelings! In his head!!!! He thinks breaking down crying is very reasonable actually!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

It is absolutely very reasonable, and so he should SIT THERE and BASK in his two favorite people working together for a humanitarian goal and have his feelings in peace and comfort.

Engineer's orders.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alright alright he'll stay put.

Permalink Mark Unread

(The plants are SO EXCITED about all of this!!!! They can help people again!!!!!!! They've missed helping people!!!!!!!!)

Permalink Mark Unread

...Nai is having some kind of emotion about this.

Permalink Mark Unread

Is the emotion, perhaps, "oh come ON I just rescued all of you and you just want to jump right into the endlessly hungry maws of the monstrous humans again"? Or maybe "PLEASE don't be so easy to abuse and do any self-care"? Or alternatively just a sort of instinctive association between plants wanting to help SO MUCH and being tortured to death by humans?

Permalink Mark Unread

...all of the above? Mostly the last one.

Permalink Mark Unread

Naaaaaaiiiiiii.

Permalink Mark Unread

They will not be tortured to death, because they (Yvette, Zash, and Nai) will not let them, the plants will be sort of returned but still considered under their jurisdiction or something. Which is to say: if they start getting tortured to death, it will be noticed and they will put a stop to it directly.

... But she's really glad the plants are happy, too. She understands very well how annoying it can be to be trapped in a little comfortable box that is nonetheless cut off from the outside world with no way to affect it. It's kind of why she went rogue and got a car and a guide and drove out into the desert like a crazy person.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, how do they do that? They don't exactly have a ton of fast transportation, here, planes haven't been reinvented yet and the number of—

Permalink Mark Unread

Nai had been under the impression that Yvette had been very clear about how much work Zash was meant to be doing right now and the reasons for why that amount is zero.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Et tu, Brute?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[I was the one who taught you that expression back on the ship, you don't get to use it against me.]

Permalink Mark Unread

...oh, he was.

Zash's crying again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Pet pet pet pet. [It's okay, darling. You're not alone, anymore.]

Also, she genuinely thinks Nai or at least his people are better positioned to answer that transportation question. Because Zash walked everywhere. Like, how the hell did she get here from the sand steamer so fast?? Before the plant did, even! That's probably Zazi related bullshit, but the plant still nonetheless made it here before Zash and Morgan did. Nai has been stealing plants from all over the world, he has to have some kind of transportation network available. Underground, maybe? She bets that Zazi-as-worms is really good at tunneling.

Permalink Mark Unread

...he does have tunnels but he is NOT letting humans use them! They're his tunnels!!! Humans will just ruin them—uh, present company excepted.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zash wraps his arms around one of Nai's legs and starts rubbing his face against it.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Zash, what are you doing.

Permalink Mark Unread

He thought he'd just narrated it, he's rubbing his face against Nai's leg.

Permalink Mark Unread

Why—

Permalink Mark Unread

Does Nai want him to stop?

Permalink Mark Unread

...he didn't say that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then it's settled!

Permalink Mark Unread

...okay.

(He's getting some weird fuzzy happy feelings about that but instead he will focus on work.)

Permalink Mark Unread

ANYWAY yes okay he maybe perhaps sort of has a network of underground tunnels spanning all of the civilised areas of the planet. And good transportation in it. And occasionally Zazi helps but he doesn't trust them and doesn't rely on them. He has robots to deal with the maintenance and infrastructure though honestly uh if Zazi wanted to wreck their shit they wouldn't have much to do about that? Nai's got them beat for firepower but short of a war of extermination which would absolutely have a ton of casualties he doesn't have much in the way of ways to deal with the bugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yvette is honestly fine not letting humans use his tunnels. Or, well, it's sufficiently out of her area of expertise and she has a vested interest in them being specialized for keeping plants healthy that she's not going to pick a fight about it? Maybe as a one time thing to get refugees to designated refugee locations, but that does show the world that those tunnels exist, so there are legitimate reasons not to. As for extended 'let the humans use the thing' kind of stuff? Yeah, she just has no idea how to make that function without exploding and getting into some kind of war or something. That is a thing she is entirely not qualified for. They can try to figure out the benefits and downsides of letting humans use Nai's transportation infrastructure at a later date. When there is not an ongoing refugee crisis. And maybe they have experts that are actually... knowledgeable... about transportation networks and their benefits besides plant maintenance.

Also they should... probably figure out what the heck to do with/about Zazi. Um. That sounds like a scary thing to think about.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zazi is weird and complicated and even the plants have trouble reading them—

Permalink Mark Unread

—still mad—

Permalink Mark Unread

—but on the other hand they've never killed a plant, unlike a certain other species he could name.

Permalink Mark Unread

Naaaiiiiiiiiii!

Permalink Mark Unread

What! What now! It's true!

Permalink Mark Unread

Sigh.

...Zash does think he has more than zero idea what to do about Zazi, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

...well?

Permalink Mark Unread

Hmm? Oh, Zash thought he wasn't meant to be working.

Permalink Mark Unread

[… fine, fine, you’re allowed to say your one idea. But then it’s back to not working for you, bud.]

Permalink Mark Unread

He grins a teary-eyed grin and decides it is time to nuzzle Yvette now.

[not a one idea, more like a... thought]

[a few thoughts]

[one is, Morgan's dealt with Zazi most directly of all of us right? she'll probably have ideas]

[am I allowed to say my other thoughts?]

Permalink Mark Unread

Why is Zash so aggravating?

(And since this is telepathy, they'll all get the subtext of him actually finding this kind of endearing.)

(And since this is telepathy, Nai will see this subtext reflected in their thoughts and get really annoyed with himself.)

Permalink Mark Unread

[Nai you are so cute]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Agreed, very cute.]

Fine, Zash may explain his thoughts in more detail but then implementation is someone else's job, understand? That seems to be the part that he finds most draining anyway. But getting Morgan's help is a good one, even though they'd then have to, like, talk? And explain? Out loud? With their words? Instead of just working at the speed of thought, which is obviously superior and much more efficient. (She has really taken to being a hybrid.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah it's definitely the implementation that'll be the most trouble, what with how this last thought of hers has just made him start crying harder again.

(HOW LONG IS THIS GOING TO LAST HE IS SO TIRED OF CRYING.)

Permalink Mark Unread

It's been a hundred and fifty years, dude, give yourself a break.

Permalink Mark Unread

Did. Did Nai just. Tell him to do emotional self-care. And. Validate his feelings.

[love, you saw that, right? I didn't hallucinate what Nai just said?]

(Alternative things he could and maybe should've responded with are "I'm a plant after all" and "runs in the family" and "no u" but he's mostly too shocked.)

He kinda thinks it's time to nuzzle Nai again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Why is Zash like this.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anyway! Thoughts!

[Zazi is distributed, there isn't just one Zazi, or even an integer number of Zazis, so whatever we come up with to deal with them needs to take that into account. I... should talk to them some more now that I don't want to exterminate them, figure out what that means in practice. main thing is probably that it won't take an individual one-time bribe, and maybe even "bribing" or "paying" or "trading" might be the wrong way to approach it]

Zash thinks the most likely long-term solution will in fact be long-term, in the sense that it will need to be some plan that involves them doing stuff related to it for a long time, maybe forever. Build a proper working relationship with Zazi, as if they're the governments of neighbouring countries, rather than interpret them as being an individual they've negotiated with or anything like that.

Which, really, is probably generally how they want to deal with Zazi always? Unless they do go on said war of extermination Zazi is here to stay and honestly Zazi was here first and it would be really unfriendly to be the ones to start hostilities if they can just work together towards each other's goals.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Nai did just, yes, and it was very charming.]

Hmmm, yeah, that does seem like it's a better way of approaching things. And also like it's so not Yvette's area of expertise. Uh. Permission to table this for now and go back to the problem that is shiny both more within her area of expertise and under a more direct time crunch? Possibly after calling Morgan, which she bets this console will let her do if she actually investigates all of the icons it has instead of tunnel visioning on her chosen task, as is her habit?

Permalink Mark Unread

He doesn't have a generic "call random people" button. ...he thinks. He confesses the only person he really interacted with on any regular basis other than the plants was Dr. Conrad and so Nai just had a thing to talk to him and let Conrad figure it out. Nai wasn't even the main one using the consoles, something like 80% of his time was spent directly healing plants.

Permalink Mark Unread

[...you spent 80% of the past century and a half on healing plants?]

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah?

Permalink Mark Unread

Holy shit no wonder he hates humans so much.

Permalink Mark Unread

No duh.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, his stamina for healing plants is actually really impressive, usually he's barred from continuing healing by the plant's stamina, not his own!! It's also why her own abilities and knowledge were so useful to him, because her techniques don't ask as much of the plants themselves! And they scale better, and allow for him to specialize in the hard cases, and she is getting distracted by shiny problems she wants to solve again. Sorry.

She'll go figure out how to call Morgan, which will probably involve calling Conrad. Or, no, actually she can just send him a message instead of calling like some kind of heathen. Conrad gets a message asking for him to please at his earliest convenience send Morgan down to the plant room, they want her perspective for some things.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's not even just the physical stamina, the emotional stamina of staring the consequences of humans' actions in the face like that, knowing each detail of how exactly the plants got hurt, having to painstakingly undo the damage—sometimes while the plant herself would have been insensate with pain—and doing that for so long...

[I'm so sorry, Nai,] is what he sends, with a lot of feeling. [on, on behalf of humanity, I'm sorry you've had to...]

Permalink Mark Unread

Nai thought he was going to be able to escape feelings, here. Can he just escape feelings? Please? They can feelings later when it hasn't been so much feelings all concentrated.

Permalink Mark Unread

...yes. Right. Sorry. He's doing the plant thing of letting overwhelming feelings override other concerns again. Instead he'll just. Pull Nai into a tighter hug and rock back and forth a little bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

This system was set up to always be able to get him, even wake him up if necessary—Nai isn't a very patient person—so Dr. Conrad replies with an acknowledgement not ten seconds after Yvette sends him the message. From there he can use the compound's video cameras to locate and then go fetch Morgan.

"Ms. Marlowe requests your presence at the plants room," Dr. Conrad tells her once he's found her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Morgan's been hanging around, generally attempting to make use of the forced downtime. Play chess with Zazi, tune up her gigantic gun (it's fine, but she can give it a proper cleaning and replace one of the panels that got dented from how she keeps using the damn thing as a bludgeon), sew up the holes in her clothes, get some sleep, look up some med specs, break all of Conrad's horrifying equipment, and make sure that there definitely really are no humans in the human experimentation cells. There were not, apparently Nai's plan was close enough to fruition that the doctor didn't bother acquiring his next round of subjects. The cells also get very extremely broken.

She's currently in the middle of sewing herself a replacement outfit, when she looks up to see Conrad.

"Oh, that was fast." She was expecting them to need approximately a full week devoted to fucking or something. This is pleasantly ahead of schedule. Maybe she didn't need to start sewing new clothes to keep herself entertained after all. "Yeah, sure, going."

She arrives in the plant room without too much fuss.

"Hey I hear you're not locked in a bedroom, congraaaaaand you are all in a cuddle pile in front of the console. Okay. Sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

It's not a cuddle pile, Nai thinks a bit irritatedly. It's only Zash who's being cuddly and hugging his leg, Nai is sitting cross-legged there and Yvette is using the console and not cuddling at all.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zash helpfully provides Nai with an external picture of what the three of them look like, fetched by the plants from Morgan's mind's eye.

[this is a cuddle pile, Nai]

Permalink Mark Unread

Is not.

Permalink Mark Unread

[is too.]

"Hey, Morgan," he says, that whole interaction having taken only a fraction of a second because telepathy is nice like that. "Do you want to be our Zazi consultant?" His face is still kind of visibly the face of someone who's been crying nearly nonstop for several hours and who might start crying again any minute now.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, I feel like Zazi is the best Zazi consultant available, and can hear everything we're saying right now, but yeah sure? Are you actually doing planning and shit there? Because I have no fucking idea where Legato and Elendira went off to, I've been looking, and I'm concerned."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We are doing planning and shit here! We mostly want to be allowed to try and save the world without Zazi interfering to make it less boring," clarifies Yvette.

Permalink Mark Unread

".... Does Zash's fancy secret arcology have, like, a library of DNA of stuff from Old Earth?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...yeah? Pretty sure every species that still existed on Earth for the, like, half a century maybe a century prior to the Exodus had DNA samples stored in the ships and the arcology doesn't have all of them but it has most."

That's not every species that ever existed; many were extinct before humans even came to be, and many more went extinct afterwards, a majority of them by humans themselves. It's still a hefty amount, and most certainly more of them than this planet's ever seen.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zazi is a bad Zazi consultant because Zazi is untrustworthy.

Permalink Mark Unread

"—also Nai says that Zazi is a bad Zazi consultant because Zazi is untrustworthy."

Permalink Mark Unread

(And they can hear the sound of buzzing laughter coming from nowhere in particular.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh huh. Hey Zazi! You want to give the nerds a chance to fix the world or whatever without meddling to make it more entertaining or something if they give you cloning equipment and a library of Earth bugs? And tell us if this arrangement stops working for you in advance instead of just, like, surprise I was bored?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh that's clever. Zash wouldn't have guessed it because he actually doesn't know Zazi personally very well but this implies some things about Zazi's personality that make it sound like this'd be a great form of bribery.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zazi decides to make a body for better communication. They are very good at body language, they feel.

"A whole library of them?" they ask, sounding delighted. "Yeah!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There you go. Might unleash a plague of locusts on the world or whatever, but."

Permalink Mark Unread

"... I guess the large scale ecological change to add insect life is really much better than a war with a hivemind," muses Yvette. She's also thinking that they should go through the library before handing it off to see about maybe not unleashing really annoying bugs on the whole of Gunsmoke.

Permalink Mark Unread

Still unconvinced.

Permalink Mark Unread

Any particular reason?

Permalink Mark Unread

The plants can't read them. Zash can't read them. They lied to Zash once, right? They could do it again. They're even worse than humans in that respect.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's... fair... and brings up that other point Zash mentioned.

"Can you make promises for all of you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...what can you make promises for, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"This us!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're only answering my questions piecewise to aggravate me, aren't you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Waooo we can't lie to you anymore, can we!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Zash actually likes them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zash likes everyone, that's not news.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yvette likes them too, honestly. Even though they kidnapped her and this only seems to have worked out for her and the state of the world by sheer dumb luck.

Permalink Mark Unread

"They can't promise anything for any of their other selves, and if another Zazi eats this set we're a bit shit out of luck, but making deals to offer the Zazi we're working with what they want will help keep us in their collective good books in the future. It's easier to just go 'Hey, I'm bored, entertain me' than start a whole domino plot about how to blow up the world to make it interesting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can't lie to you, either, can we, Miss?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's pretty fair, though. I assume this question doesn't have an answer but just in case I'm wrong, how many Zazis are there?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We prefer 'Zazie' for the plural, actually!"

It sounds the same as "Zazi".

Permalink Mark Unread

"...were you relying on us picking up the spelling of that from your mind?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright, well, how many Zazie are there?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dunno! More than one, less than a hundred million! Probably. It's not an integer number for sure. Or really a number. More a spectrum. Unless you count each individual bug as one Zazi in which case way more than a hundred million. But you probably didn't mean that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I did indeed not."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can make a promise for the local Zazie, how's that." Pause. "Actually not all of us, there's a Zazi having fun with Legato and we're not sure they'll take this deal."

Permalink Mark Unread

Who.

Permalink Mark Unread

They were literally just talking about him!

Permalink Mark Unread

He wasn't keeping track of the name.

Anyway, he's managed to fetch the memory out of Zash's head though. That guy. He promised this human here that he'd kill that guy once the human delivered Zash to him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Which... honestly, Morgan did. So. :P

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anyway it's the best I can think of. Not a guarantee, just a good reason for Zazi to play nice. Your plans to save the world or whatever involves going after Legato, yeah? 'Cause not only does he need to die, but take it from an expert, the fucker will not leave you alone."

Permalink Mark Unread

.... But hunting down annoying stupid humans is haaaaaaaard and she doesn't caaaaaaare.

Permalink Mark Unread

He kind of did drop a ton of metal directly on Zash's face and then proceeded to kill a bunch of people on the sand steamer. Like, Zash also doesn't want to kill the fucker because Zash is just against killing in general but there definitely is any reason to care.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yvette's not against the guy being hunted down and killed or anything, she's just not sure how she personally could assist with that!! And she thinks that numbers wise the ongoing refugee crisis is probably going to be responsible for more death than one telekinetic psycho. Admittedly she hasn't properly done the math on that, and is probably just retroactively justifying the choice she wants to go with, but. Still!!!!

She likes doing unquestionably positive things instead of morally grey hunt someone down to kill them things, okay.

Permalink Mark Unread

Also, like, Nai did promise it. It may have been to a human but it still counts.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Anyway. Can't they just... arrest him? Or something?

Permalink Mark Unread

He promised.

Permalink Mark Unread

If they can convince Morgan to accept imprisonment?

Permalink Mark Unread

...fine.

But also it's gonna be a lot of effort for one guy. Does Zash think he could imprison Nai?

Permalink Mark Unread

...probably with a lot of creativity and time and the element of surprise? Why?

Permalink Mark Unread

Crazy missionary guy's telekinesis is about that strong.

Permalink Mark Unread

eesh.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you having a long moral argument about the value of killing the guy versus not," sighs Morgan. "In your heads."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah I thought so." Sigh. "C'mon. Dead's easiest, and then you can all get back to cuddling or whatever."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...you've seen my scars. You know how much it being easiest is not really something I pay much attention to."

Permalink Mark Unread

Also he promised.

Permalink Mark Unread

"—also Nai doesn't want to renege on his promise."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well I'm glad," she says, beginning to sound actually angry, "because I'm not fucking budging on this, and unfortunately for all of us, I can't do it alone! Or I would have already. I have been patiently waiting, and being supportive, and playing the pacifist game, and getting shot, and burning years off of my goddamned life for your morals, and so you don't get to just sit there and wring your hands about a psycho murderer getting what's fucking coming to him from one of his many victims. If you want to fret about the sanctity of human life then be real fucking aware that if he is not taken care of sooner rather than later, he will kill people. He will figure out you flinch from it and then use it against you. He will have a hundred hostages lined up and have them kill each other in fucking front of you to make you realize some batshit insane religious dogma. He..!" She lets out a breath through her teeth. "He needs. To die."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zash looks away. Turns out being yelled at is what makes him definitely stop crying.

"I know," he says, in a low voice. Then he clears his throat and repeats it, more loudly, "I know. I know there's, I, I could hear it. When he came to, to gloat. If he were just a normal person with a gun, then, then... but he's not. And it's not just him, is it, it's whomever else he's got. It's Elendira, at minimum. So, I... I know. I know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Great! So?? Are we going to stop sitting here wringing our damn hands or are we going to take some fucking initiative!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We don't really know where he is, and I don't really have a good way to find him. Do you?"

[do you?]

Permalink Mark Unread

...him? No, of course not. How would he even—?

Permalink Mark Unread

[the guy does worship you as a god.]

Permalink Mark Unread

That's between him and his conscience, Nai wants no part in it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not as such, no, but the bastard's a coward, and will be hiding until we're not in the great big fancy defensible base he can't fuck with. What I do need to know if you're with me or not, and frankly that's still looking up in the fucking air, ain't it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not against him dying," pipes up Yvette, "I just don't think I could help at all with him. Sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I get it, stay here and be the best damn nerd of all time, it's fine. This is aimed at the twins, who I fucking need to have any chance against the psycho."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm with you. I don't—I know he needs to be stopped." Killed. "I'm with you." He glances at Nai, then looks at her again. "Nai is, too.

"You suggested that Nai could maybe just show up and say 'you have been chosen as the next sacrifice' and he'd come out and roll over, do you reckon that would actually work? He did think you were Nai's chosen holy weapon or something, maybe he'll be fine if you replace him."

Permalink Mark Unread

That is so dumb.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nai you were literally the one who turned yourself into a weapon for your own purposes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, he turned himself into a weapon for his own purposes!!! He didn't go and decide someone else was yet a third person's weapon!!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmm. Maybe. Some ultra dramatic thing to draw him out... that could work."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe we should get Conrad here for psychoanalysing Legato."

Permalink Mark Unread

...for doing what?

Permalink Mark Unread

"—as in, he's also interacted with Legato a bunch and from a different angle so he might have a different perspective. I don't have as much of a read on the guy as I'd like but... he was trying to test you or something, right, and he was pretty pissed at me specifically. He called me 'Fallen One', he probably thinks I'm something like a dark antagonist figure in his cosmogony, I bet there's something there we could exploit. ...actually, did, uh, did I ever actually feature in your religious upbringing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Literally everything Nai hears about this guy makes him like him less and less. Nai was much happier just knowing he was a reasonably competent minion who didn't get in his way while rescuing plants for him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Morgan does not particularly want to get into the details of that, thank you.

"Yes, you featured. I doubt Conrad could offer more than I already know. Speaking of, actually, can I kill him?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Zash looks up at Nai.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nai doesn't look up at Yvette, but he does ask: [can you take over his work?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[... Probably. I doubt I could be as good at he is at immortalizing people and attaching them to gates, and I want him to write out all of his research first so we preserve as much as possible. Even if the ways it was discovered were irredeemable, it's there now and could be used for something good. On the other hand, I don't... particularly want to prolong his suffering.]

She despises him, but he is still a living being with an internal experience and a world of his own. She wants him not taking further actions to inflict horrors upon the world, not tortured.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay. Nai nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zash looks back at Morgan. "We need to check whether his research is written up somewhere, but... yeah. After we've done that, yeah."

He's not happy about it, but... he's not really reluctant. It's not for others to choose whether anyone else lives or dies, but if someone doesn't want to live anymore then... by the same token... they are the only one who gets to make that decision.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sweet!" whoops Morgan, delighted. "I'll let him know to get his affairs in order, and get to crafting a fitting stage for our psycho missionary to deign to show up on, I guess?"

Permalink Mark Unread

It is honestly kind of disturbing to see Morgan seem so happy about killing someone. It's more like a child who has been promised their favorite dessert than someone requesting to be executioner and having their request accepted. It's just... unnerving. Yvette is unnerved.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zash honestly gets it; this man has caused her so much suffering. Not to mention how, at the end of everything, she is a child. She's in an adult's body and tries to act like an adult but she's a kid, really, forced to grow up far too quickly and do horrible things. Someday she may grow up into someone who is less... like that... but for right now, yeah.

"Sounds like a plan."

Permalink Mark Unread

...it's kind of... something... to see the way Zash does the plant thing, of loving everyone. When their sisters love everyone, they sort of almost entirely focus on the positives, their feelings and happiness, their qualities; Zash does a different thing, and Nai doesn't really get the thing he does but it kind of does a much better job at making Nai understand the people Zash is being a plant at/about.

It's very uncomfortable is what it is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah. Yvette understands why she’s so happy about murder too, but intellectually. More viscerally this just... does not feel like a way the world should be working. Like things falling up. There might be a rational explanation present, but it still feels incorrect. Wrong.

Permalink Mark Unread

On the other hand it is really nice to see Nai fit back with Zash and have them both have the holes in their hearts filled again. And, well, okay, she will take a brief break from being a workaholic for proper snuggles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool. I'll let you know when I need you." And off Morgan goes, to see about arranging two deaths, looking quite cheerful.

Permalink Mark Unread

[do we trust her to be competent to find Legato and Elendira]

[I'm inclined to say yes but at least part of that is that I really don't want to be the one to do it.] This conversation got him to get some semblance of emotional stability back but he's not entirely sure that stability is, well, stable, and besides he still, um, is kind of enjoying the snuggles and the "not having to do things" part. Thinking about things is fine, doing them is enhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Permalink Mark Unread

[... War and fighting is admittedly most of what she knows, she's probably pretty good at it? And these are also people she knows better than we do. But we can check back in a couple of days and sort it out ourselves if it looks like it's not going anywhere? I admittedly also do not want to deal with it, and I am not particularly martially inclined. Or experienced.]

Permalink Mark Unread

For the fighting part Morgan's right that they definitely need at minimum Zash's help, and with Nai's help it would be made trivial (though something tells him that it will not be as straightforward as all that). He thinks he can—no, he actually just can, there's no uncertainty there—he can pull himself together when they need him to. It'll be fine then.

But until then: snuggle time!

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuggle time!

Permalink Mark Unread

Meanwhile, Morgan goes and tracks down the doctor.

"Good news!" she says, brightly. "Get your affairs and research in order, 'cause you're allowed to die, and I'm allowed to kill you."

Permalink Mark Unread

He stops typing for a few seconds, hands hovering above the keyboard, then resumes. "You have acquired Master Knives's permission?" he asks, trying not to sound too hopeful. His fingers are trembling, though, and he's starting to make more typos.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"And when you say I should get my affairs and research in order...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pretty sure they want their snugglybuddy to take over instead, and she's fussy about, like. Scientific progress not being lost? And isn't specialized in your thing at all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see. So Ms. Marlowe wishes for a writeup of my research and then," he swallows dryly, "you will kill me?" He's still not looking at her but he's having a harder time hiding his nervousness, or anxiety, or excitement, or something.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very well. Then I believe you may proceed. I keep detailed records of everything I have done, including my reasoning, predictions, results, and the raw data, for an eventuality such as would incapacitate me, that others may continue or improve upon my research." His Adam's apple bobs as he swallows dryly once more. "Everything should be ready." He swaps out of what he was doing to start accessing some system files that require his personal authorisation. "I will give her root access to all of my files, so that she does not need to request Master Knives's permission for them, and then—" His breath hitches. "And then I will be ready."

Permalink Mark Unread

Morgan gives a cheerful nod.

Elsewhere, someone might notice that Conrad has been vaporized.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nai notices. Mostly he notices the drain on his gate, notices that it's not coming from him nor Yvette, and then... closes it. Doesn't let any more matter and energy from the higher dimension go in that direction. And not long after that, the connection is severed, and Conrad is no more.

Permalink Mark Unread

...if Zash believed in souls he'd say something like that he hoped Conrad would get some rest, now. But he supposes nonexistence is almost that, and it is what the good doctor wanted, and had wanted for decades, so. Zash will. Try not to feel sad about it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yvette is mostly just disturbed about the speed at which murder was conducted. She was briefly concerned that it meant that he hadn't had the time to relay his research, but she just got admin access to stuff, so. He was probably just prepared. All the time. Which on reflection is very sad. Now that he's not going to hurt anyone else, she can really properly pity him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, he just... actually was in fact prepared to go. Zash has a minor hypothesis here that maybe Conrad was subconsciously hoping this would happen if one of his experiments hated him enough, so that it wouldn't have been his fault and he wouldn't have been directly abandoning his duties to Nai.

Permalink Mark Unread

...they do realise that this is the guy who performed horrific experiments on Tesla and was generally a terrible person, right? Why are they trying to make Nai feel bad for him.

Permalink Mark Unread

[we're not trying to make you feel bad for him. personally, I just do feel bad for him and I have reasons for doing so and they, you know, exist in my head]

Permalink Mark Unread

It's much easier to deal with their sisters when they do this. They don't go and be all compelling at him.

Permalink Mark Unread

[...if it helps, I do think Conrad was a monster, both to Tesla and to all of his human subjects]

Permalink Mark Unread

Yvette feels a bit bad for the doctor, but not very much. She does just uncomplicatedly think he was a horrible person who did awful things and that probably fits the definition of 'monster' or something. Objectively if someone had to have a torturous existence of a hundred years in an attempt to undo his mistakes, he's probably not a bad candidate to do that suffering? Something something justice or... something ... But she also doesn't really have much of a vindictive side. If she were to take issue with Nai it'd be about keeping him alive while he was doing monstrous things instead of feeling bad for his suffering.

Uh. That was maybe not a very cuddly thought. Sorry? She's pretty sure she already yelled at him about this already, she didn't mean to belabor her point.

Permalink Mark Unread

He is not thinking about Knives right now and he will continue not to think about Knives right now. What work can they do that does not involve Knives?

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, out of the three main things Yvette was thinking about earlier this morning, Elendira (and Legato) are in Morgan's capable hands for the moment, Nai wants to not deal with Knives for now, so disseminating research is the main bit, right? They should—uh. Nai, if Zash thinks about the locations of Brad's team's dead drops are you going to go fuck with them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Are they killing plants?

Permalink Mark Unread

No.

Permalink Mark Unread

Are they hurting plants?

Permalink Mark Unread

No.

Permalink Mark Unread

Is Zash very sure of this.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes. They are trying to figure out ways for humans to not hurt plants, same as Nai, if from a different angle.

Permalink Mark Unread

What angle?

Permalink Mark Unread

Flora.

But also they have a lot of plants who are all working together, they know Zash and Nai are independent plants and so Zash has explained to them all the everything about how plants are actually sentient and whatnot, they've devised some clever (if low-throughput and low-fidelity and high-latency) ways to communicate with the plants using their matter creation abilities, and they haven't had a single red plant in the last hundred and forty years.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not all ways plants can hurt makes them go red—

Permalink Mark Unread

They know. Everything Zash knows, they know. They're trying their best. They don't have any plant engineers because Yvette is—maybe not unique, but very rare, in how she cares and can be trusted—so they're limited in what they can do, but that means they're more careful, not less, because they know they don't have the know-how to make efficient use of plants without hurting them.

Permalink Mark Unread

They're humans.

Permalink Mark Unread

You've met Yvette, dude.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's special!

Permalink Mark Unread

In profession, education, opportunity, and having the correct mix of ability, stubbornness, and personality to attract them both, but otherwise, not really! She feels she lucked out that her profession turned out to be such a morality nightmare and needed someone of exactly her qualities. Lots of people really do spend their lives helping others, and part of her plan to get humans to treat plants better is to make them realize that they're people. Because that'll do a lot of the work. Not all of it, humans often suck, but a lot. Just a lot of those people don't also become plant engineers, because plant engineers require a lot of (expensive) education to make, and it seems much easier to just do direct charity work instead of going through all that trouble.

Permalink Mark Unread

Doubt.

Permalink Mark Unread

[just trust me? please?]

Permalink Mark Unread

Plants' lives are on the line

Permalink Mark Unread

Here's a whole fucking package of memories, in the typical plant-fractal fashion that Nai is used to, about everything Zash has observed inside Brad's arcology, every conversation, every diagnostic, everything about the plants there, everything.

[please, even if you don't trust that my long-term goals are the same as yours, please just trust that I am dealing with Knives fairly. if Knives doesn't want to trust my assertions about the goodness of humans, can Knives at least trust that I'm being honest and genuine in my expectations that he will not regret having dealt with me?]

Permalink Mark Unread

Fine. He promises he's not going to mess with this arcology of Zash's, pending reevaluation later when he decides whether Knives should die or not.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thank you.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yvette's a little tempted to be irritated at how Nai (Knives, maybe?) clearly hasn't been engaging with her arguments, but... no, actually, she gets it. Probably because she's a bit in his brain right now, but still. He is not discounting or dismissing her stance, he just wants to process them later when he's less of a mess. As someone who also had to deal with her entire world being upended, that makes perfect sense. He wants to handle it properly, carefully, with all of the weight and thought it requires. And he really hasn't had much of a chance to, because everything has been... very. Just very. Pick your own adjective, lots of them could fill the space.

[Thank you] echoes Yvette, along with a sense of willing-to-be-patient.

(Though also the sense that if he fails to ever engage with them she will hunt him down and beat him with her brain again until he listens.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Come on, give him some credit, he'd totally beat himself up too if he didn't follow up on it, it's important. He's gonna, just...

...you know.

Later.

When he's less being snuggled and Yvette is less being competent and fierce in his presence and Zash is less being, being...

Permalink Mark Unread

Being adorable while nuzzling Nai?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah. That.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes. Very reasonable. Though, she sort of did give him credit on the trusting him to do it himself front, didn't she? She just also acknowledged that she's the kind of person to follow up later.

She pats him, because he's very cute, and then she goes back to work because of course she does. With access to all of Conrad's files she can continue picking out the best locations to put plants! She has more information to work from, now! Yay!!

Permalink Mark Unread

And Zash can properly think about the locations of the dead drops (honestly if Nai had really wanted to he could've learned those already, it's not like Zash can properly hide those thoughts, just try to not explicitly think about them) for Yvette to get them. These three places here are the ones they'll have left their new schedule if it's changed, and if it hasn't changed then these other places here are where they want to leave a message. Probably what they want to do is try to set up a proper meeting? If Zash vouches for them they'll be able to go with no issues. It might even be a good idea to get Nai there, to help convince him that actually lots of people don't suck.

Permalink Mark Unread

Look, he's said this before, it's not really that important if there are individual humans who don't suck, because regardless of that humanity as an entity is what's hurting plants: some individual humans do suck, and the horrible incentive systems set up are such that even if—

Permalink Mark Unread

Nai you have to make up your mind, either you want to argue about this while being snuggled or you don't, but you don't get to give everyone a piece of your mind when it suits you and then refuse to listen if they argue back.

Permalink Mark Unread

He does too listen.

...but fair. Sorry.

Permalink Mark Unread

ANYWAY yeah arcology people.

Permalink Mark Unread

Arcology people! Okay, fine, she'll focus on that instead of the new and shiny problem that's directly in front of her, she can be directed. Just also having a lever with which to directly save lives is something she actually really wants to use, and use well.

She's already done a lot of the work for consolidating her data so it can be handed off to the general scientific community, which makes it easier to wrap up. And... it looks like Conrad was picking through her work? Even doing it while she was out of commission??? He even wrote in questions and did careful documentation of all actions taken, all of which were reasonable. His questions and immediate conclusions when presented with what she already had are useful for figuring out how to present everything. That's... all so damned helpful she's honestly surprised? She hadn't been expecting decency of him, holy shit. Maybe that speech at the start actually did something, and when presented with work that was just actually unquestionably good... well. Good for him.

Permalink Mark Unread

...it's probably not useful for Zash to try to people person about a dead guy but they're in each other's heads so Yvette will certainly be able to see the impulse. Or, if nothing else, the bare fact that Zash does not feel at all surprised by this.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's very cute, and she will probably take him up on that later, but there is no time for feelings right now, Zash! None!! Who are you to think feelings are allowed, she's working so she (and Nai) can avoid them!

Permalink Mark Unread

Nodnodnodnod.

Permalink Mark Unread

Man if he's not allowed to work and not allowed to feelings what else is he meant to do here.

(Human reproduction-related thoughts flit to mind and now he's seeing an advantage or two to having shut his libido down decades ago actually. Especially given that the people he might want to take human reproduction-related actions with are unavailable.)

Permalink Mark Unread

...people, plural???? Zash, Nai isn't human, he thought that was clear.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Not being human and having a fluid body plan just means he has more options available to him, really, clearly hybrids can have sex drives if they want them and it has legitimate recreational appeal NO BAD YVETTE.)

Nope, nope, not engaging with any of that. She is not. Zash is here for SNUGGLES and BASKING IN THE PRESENCE OF THOSE HE LOVES.

She!! Is going!!! To work!!!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

...speaking of work, uh, Nai loves likes enjoys appreciates has positive feelings about the snuggles but he actually wants to go back to directly healing plants now. Even if the red ones aren't in pain, here, because of the entire support network he's built for them, they're still not alright.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, absolutely. She supports this wholeheartedly. Uh. ... Probably she can mind snuggle him because she's using his gate now? So he can sort of have that if he wants, while still healing plants. If he would not feel like she's overstepping into his personal space about it, anyway, she'd kind of been expecting that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course they're going to—what does she—

Permalink Mark Unread

[Nai, she has no idea what it feels like to heal plants from the inside]

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh.

He supposes that makes sense.

Well, they'll be mind snuggling.

Permalink Mark Unread

[...I can't fly but... could you bring me with you? to heal the plant] He turns his mental attention if not his eyes towards Yvette. [if it's alright for me to unsnuggle?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Yes, Zash, it’s all right for you to unsnuggle. The rule about always touching for the next month is mostly for your benefit, you know, I was never worried about your survival.]

Just him. Which is much less scary, really.

Permalink Mark Unread

[lovelovelovelove]

[you'll like this]

But then yes he'll get up.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Nai will hold one of Zash's hands. A bit shyly. And then he'll strangle the shyness to death and start to fly them towards one of the red plants.

Permalink Mark Unread

The plant starts to unfold before they even get there, and her thoughts are more jumbled than plants' thoughts usually are. It's in a very recognisable way, though: she feels nervous, and excited, and anxious, and anticipatory. She knows what they're going to do and while she isn't in pain she isn't alright, as Nai himself thought, and they'll help her feel alright.

She loves them so much.

Permalink Mark Unread

Awwwwwwwwww what a cutie, she loves her right back.

Yvette will bravely attempt to continue doing her own work, but she's starting to get the sneaking suspicion that this is an immensely emotional and compassionate sort of event that one might find distracting.

Permalink Mark Unread

They get to the tank and place their hands and foreheads on the glass, Nai's right hand resting on top of Zash's left hand, and they open up.

Permalink Mark Unread

The feeling... is pretty much the psychic equivalent of snuggling.

You're not alone.

We're here for you.

You don't have to be afraid.

You don't have to fight so much.

We love you.

We can help you.

You don't need to worry.

Trust us.

The feeling, in itself, isn't directed, and Yvette might get the sense it can't be. It's love, pure and simple. It's the kind of thing that doesn't have room for doubt, for selfishness, for fear, for mistrust. They make themselves vulnerable, make themselves wide open in full trust that they're not going to be hurt, that they're not going to be taken advantage of when everything they have is laid bare.

It's not, actually, very distracting, because it really just feels comfortable. Cosy. Like home. It's a passive, background feeling, a feeling that isn't strongly and intensely felt, the kind of love that permeates your heart and your thoughts when you're next to someone you love and you're allowed to simply be, with your guard lowered and your heart still.

Permalink Mark Unread

Once they establish that connection, once their souls are in synchrony, their minds can interface with even higher bandwidth. Yvette natively has that much bandwidth with Nai because they're sharing a gate, and that's how she can feel this love no matter what, that's why Nai thought that of course she was going to be feel snuggled. She's sharing in this bond with them.

But it's not just the feeling. There is a purpose to what they're doing. With their gates connected to each other like this, the twins can get to work. They look, and reach towards their sister, and go all the way into her heart and mind and body, all the way to the other dimension.

And they assess.

Where's the damage? What's going wrong? What's missing, what's hurting, what's leaking? Where are you in pain? How can they help? It's like surgery, they have to use their minds as their scalpel and to carefully and intimately know all of the ways in which the humans have hurt her. Pay close attention to their patient, comfort her, and heal her.

So it's no wonder Zash gets so exhausted, so physically and emotionally wrung out. He's not angry, never angry, but he's so, so sad and hurting for his sister, for all the pain and damage she's had to gone through. He knows exactly how much she's clamped down on her hurt and discomfort so that she could keep helping the humans, how much she's had to ignore her needs and her wishes because there was something more important on the line.

Permalink Mark Unread

And it's likewise no wonder that Nai gets less exhausted than Zash does, because Nai is always angry. He spends hours being reminded of how much humans have used his sister, how callously, how they have ignored her cries and the diagnostic data saying that everything wasn't okay. That brings the anger into focus, and it makes his purpose even clearer. He doesn't have the luxury of feeling pain when his sisters are in so much worse condition; he needs to help them, all of them, rescue them and free them from the clutches of this species that has eyes for nothing and no one but themselves.

Every time he does this, every time he heals one of his sisters, he sharpens himself more, files his blades to a finer and finer edge.

Oh.

Yeah, hoping she could get work done, while also witnessing this for the first time from the inside, was perhaps a bit overly ambitious of her, wasn't it. She can, at long last, see what's on the other side of the divide. She's even getting snuggled while she looks.

For a second she's briefly overwhelmed by the sheer beauty, and the delicious feeling of ha I'm right. Connecting what she's seeing with what she already knows. It's not, quite, all accurate, but a lot of the broad strokes are correct enough that she has enough of an idea of what's happening that her next immediate impulse is to backseat diagnose. Except... well, of course it's obvious what's wrong from her viewpoint, because they're the ones showing her and then fixing it. They know it from this side much, much better than she does. This is a time where, actually? What she should be doing is sitting down and shutting up and taking notes. Translating this all to math that can be used to show other humans what's going on. Being the proverbial surgeon is important and fulfilling, but... sometimes the way to do the most doesn't involve being the one in charge. Sometimes it's taking notes so other people can do this, too.

... Not quite the work she was expecting to be doing, but it probably counts. Even if she's absolutely failing to have any kind of control over her short attention span and high likelihood of getting distracted by new and shiny problems. So, yes she manages to work! Workaholic to the very end, that's her.

Permalink Mark Unread

The twins send her nearly-identical waves of love. The intensity of the feeling, the direction, it's almost the same, almost echoing.

But the context and the content aren't, quite, identical.

For Nai, it's the way Yvette is leveraging it, got her hands on a new resource and immediately jumped to figuring out how to best use it to help his sisters. How to best do good.

Permalink Mark Unread

For Zash, it's the understanding that she gets it. That she understands, that she knows what love can do. Her motivations, her agape, the love for all people.

He's so in love with her it's surreal.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's very sweet, and working while getting psychically snuggled and viscerally feeling she's loved is approximately the best working conditions ever. In all of time. Well, except for how it's a bit distracting, but she's declining to get distracted any further. She sends affection right back to both, but not now boys she's working!

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, ma'am. It's not conscious, it's just kind of happening, but they can try to do some more directing.

Permalink Mark Unread

(...what does that mean? Being "in love"? He's heard about it before, but...)

Permalink Mark Unread

(Zash will have to get back to you on that, little brother, because that'll take some explaining and they do in fact have a job to do here.)

Permalink Mark Unread

And so they can all happily pass the time working!

Possibly someone in this trio might notice that someone who usually needed annoying breaks for irritating human needs no longer does, but it sure as hell isn't going to be Yvette. There's a lot of work ahead of her, actually, and she does need to keep in mind diminishing returns! Yes it would be fun to map out all of the little tiny details, and it will be relevant at some point, but realistically speaking she should be focusing on using her time wisely. Which means she needs to figure out what would be the most useful to have properly mapped out and where to stop. Which means comparing with her other data from the other side of things. This does in fact eventually manage to circle back around to consolidating her research into an easily digestible form, which she notes and then is actually very proud of herself for. Listen, she has been living with herself for over two decades now, being able to keep an overall goal in mind and work towards it is the product of practice and a hell of a lot of work, not a natural way her brain goes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zash needs to take a break before she does, because he doesn't have Nai's stamina and... well... despite what he may have led Yvette to believe w.r.t. his physical needs she is now in his head and she'll be able to learn that he does, actually, feel hungry, and he does, actually, get tired, and it does, eventually, impair him. He just usually pushes through it because, well, he's a plant isn't he.

But that's when he notices. [wait, hang on, am I the only one here who's ever going to need breaks or rest or anything like that here?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[???? are you???]

Because she has no idea how long she's been here or what time it is anymore. Huh. Zash is hungry and tired? .... And he was hiding it before??? Damn it Zash, you are such a fucking plant.

Permalink Mark Unread

[I won't die of it]

Permalink Mark Unread

[you are using my gate] Nai says, distractedly, when he "hears" what they're talking about. [it sustains you. Zash's would, too, if it were open.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Damn it, Zash. Go eat something, you dummy, you know I won't take that shitty excuse as an answer when I'm now literally in your brain.]

Permalink Mark Unread

Then the prospect of never needing to eat or sleep herself draws her into the other line of thought. [Do I just entirely not need to eat now? Ever?]

Because that sounds great, actually.

Permalink Mark Unread

[...I don't think so. there may be a way for you to control my gate as much as I do but... I think I need to open it for you. like it's open right now, for our sister.] (That "our" there is distinctly flavoured as including Yvette.)

[we will need to find out how much and how often I will need to do this]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Huh. That makes sense. It would also make sense if I also needed physical proximity to you as well. But I suppose time will tell.]

She is super not engaging with the 'our sister' thing, because that sounds like she'd need to explain incest to the alien hybrid. She does not want to do that right now. There is a slight flag of discomfort over the mental phrasing, but she will be moving on to poking Zash to go and eat something. Does he need to be escorted to the food? Because she'll do it.

Permalink Mark Unread

He doesn't need food right now he just noticed he was slightly hungry and then noticed it hasn't been a thing for Yvette. He promises he'll eat eventually! But it can wait!

Permalink Mark Unread

So he needs to be escorted, then. All right. She can wrap up this part of her work that she's on and then she can bring him to the kitchen to get something to eat. It's his choice if he wants to be dragged there or not.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's pretty sure he's still too heavy for her to drag actually!

Permalink Mark Unread

Nai can float Zash there if need be.

Permalink Mark Unread

[et tu, Brute?]

Fine fine he'll go.

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent! So glad they all agree. But just to be sure, she will be holding his hand on the way there so he doesn't wander off like a child, and also because she loves him and sort of missed physical snuggles, now that she's no longer in math land. Psychic snuggles are great, but she has a physical form too!

Permalink Mark Unread

Nai has a lot of stamina but not infinite amounts of it, so he, too, has to take occasional breaks from healing plants. Typically, when he had to do that, he'd spend the down time helping the doctor with his experiments or tracking plants down to rescue or actually rescuing them. Now the doctor is dead and he's on a break from rescuing plants so instead he can spend that time doing... other things...

...what other things?

Snuggling, maybe. Having things like "incest" and "being in love" explained to him, perhaps.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Zash thinks he doesn't do it the way most humans do it. Some, but not most. He's a plant, the world is made of love and peace, he loves everyone. But he's also somewhat human, and he loves some people more than others, and in the end the main difference isn't exactly in how he feels but in what he wants. He wants Yvette in his life. He wants to call her his, and he wants her to call him hers. He wants to always have an Yvette-shaped hole in his heart that she can fill. He wants people to think of him and Yvette in the same sentence, speak their names in the same breath. His love for her isn't different in kind than his love for other people. It's still different.)

(But the way he feels about her is [=] to the way he feels about Nai. He also has a Nai-shaped hole in his heart that only Nai can fill. He also wants to be with Nai, to be Nai's and for Nai to be his. It's the same feeling. Whether you call it "being in love", in this case, is less relevant, because they're not human. It's still the same.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(Oh. Nai guesses how he feels about Zash? Maybe, a little bit, about Yvette too. But not the way humans do it, that's weird, and definitely no breeding-related feelings, that's weirder.)

(That's... okay.)

Permalink Mark Unread

He supposes, for now, this kind of thing is what he'll spend his down time on. It passes the time well enough.

Maybe he'll try sleeping, Zash said dreams can be very good.

Permalink Mark Unread

Morgan is around but aloof; she has an idea of how to draw Legato (and maybe Elendira, if she's still with him), but nothing quite actionable yet. It's being sorted, don't worry about it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meanwhile, Yvette is a happy little worker who has so much to do!! Her research and observations about plant physiology and healing are carefully packaged and prepared for delivery to the arcology. It's not really complete, because truly the march of progress never stops, but Yvette resists her perfectionistic tendencies. The theories are present and backed up by (a lot of) hard data, there are proofs and models about how to predict plant health and mend them. It's a hell of a lot more than what was known to general plant engineering before, even if it's not including all of the interesting lines of logic she's started down but hasn't tidily wrapped up with a neat little proof yet. What's here is enough to work from, so it's soon ready to be sent off to the drop off point without any kind of fuss.

From there she's back to cataloging which places would most benefit from having their plants returned to them. Where are refugees congregating, where are the locations that had the tech to support a large plant infrastructure, how close are they to Nai's tunnel network, how old are those, how long ago did they have their plants stolen from them, how likely are they to have been stripped down for parts. What will people immediately need, how many plants are necessary to comfortably fulfill that, what resources will be best created and then bartered off for human hands to do the things that plants have trouble with, and on and on and on. There's a lot, and she really feels like she should probably have a proper team with actual experience of logistics to figure all of this out, but, well. For now, she's all they've got, and if she makes a little bit of a mess of it and it's not as efficient as it could be, it's better than doing nothing at all.

Well, it's considered so by some members of this psychic trio, but perhaps not all.

Permalink Mark Unread

He had been doing fine.

Permalink Mark Unread

But it couldn't last. This happiness, this cuddliness, this pretending everything is fine and they can just hang out together as if there's nothing wrong, without a care in the world. And one of these days, after mulling it over for a while, after having taken a break, Zash walks into the plants room with a much more determined expression on his face, more purpose in his gait, than he usually has. He stops before his floating brother and folds his arms.

[Nai]

He's been putting this off, because having his brother back and in a non-kidnapping mood being cooperative and, well, cute

Zash didn't want to ruin it. Didn't want to stop it.

But he can't. He just... he can't handle all the times Knives shows up to opine, all the times he expresses disdain for humanity or feels put upon. Eventually the novelty of being fine wears off and he is distinctly not fine.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zash.

It's not a word, nor even his phonetic name, though the phonetic name is associated with it too. But no, it's the fractal of who Zash is, who Nai sees him as, the bundle of feelings and contradictions and unresolved tension. One bundle saying, "Hello. I see you. I know you. I greet you."

And there's a tinge of worry, of concern. He sees the note of upset in his twin's mind voice and he doesn't know what it's about.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zash has to push down the flash of irritation. It's not fair to blame Nai for not noticing the simmering resentment he's been feeling—

Permalink Mark Unread

—no.

Permalink Mark Unread

No. Stop that. Stop martyrizing yourself. Nai himself said so, got annoyed because of his plant tendencies to ignore his own feelings and smooth over them and try to be endlessly charitable.

No.

Nai can read his mind. Nai can feel his feelings. And Nai can fucking defend himself like a goddamn adult without Zash doing half the work for him while trying to pretend he's not feeling what he's feeling, or to make himself not feel it.

Permalink Mark Unread

[Yvette, love, I need you to leave]

Permalink Mark Unread

?????

Permalink Mark Unread

She’s distracted, half buried in math about typical human resource consumption, but. …. She can figure out what is about to happen. It’s been a long time coming.

[Okay] she agrees, putting up her work to give Zash a quick kiss before she departs. Both physically and psychically, though if they need her they know where to find her. But Zash needs this.

Permalink Mark Unread

[come down here] he tells Nai once Yvette's gone.

Permalink Mark Unread

...why.

He does, even though Zash is being unusually opaque, float down to where his twin is standing from where he'd been amidst the tanks.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Zash punches him hard enough to knock him clear off his feet and onto the floor before climbing on top of him and getting really into it.

Permalink Mark Unread

...what the fuck? His blades are out before he can even properly think about it but then his brain catches up with him and he's just—confused—

Permalink Mark Unread

(But he's not, Zash notes, seriously struggling. Close quarters like this, at this point, Nai could connect to Zash's gate and lock him out and knock him unconscious with a touch. He's not doing this.)

[why, Nai? why, why?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[what, Zash? what?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[you know what—]

He had things to say. He had a way to introduce the topic, had thought of how to ease Nai into it, but right now he's just too angry, and he doesn't have a good way to explain why. Not with words.

So instead, he does it with memories.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tonis handing him the cage with the worms, then lying bloody on the sand missing his arm.

Melissa boasting about her grenade launcher, then pierced through with blades.

Elliott arguing passionately about the sunglasses. They didn't recover enough of his body to be recognisable, they only found the broken frame of the sunglasses.

Maria, pregnant. Maria, bleeding, in the course of losing her baby.

Farther into the past. Beatrice, Fabian, Xiuyong, Tomas, Keiko, Maru, Halle, Pietro, Marcos, Philippa, Koris, Unther, Sakuo.

Luida, to her last breath asking Zash to forgive his brother.

They're all people. People Zash met, people he loved, people who had dreams and hopes and wishes and friends and family and enemies and lovers.

People Nai stole from him. People who died because of Nai, people he killed or crippled or destroyed.

Permalink Mark Unread

...he, he didn't—

Permalink Mark Unread

[Rem Saverem, Nai!!!]

Permalink Mark Unread

That, more than anything, more than the punches, more than the other memories, knocks the wind out of him.

Permalink Mark Unread

[she was our mother. our mother, Nai!]

Permalink Mark Unread

[she wasn't—she was human—]

Permalink Mark Unread

[she was our mother, you asshole]

And to make this point he sends Nai a single memory, from three different perspectives: Nai and Zash in an escape pod, and Rem Saverem furiously inputting coordinates into a console while alarms of catastrophic failure sound everywhere on the ship.

Permalink Mark Unread

...he didn't think this through well enough. It hadn't—he hadn't thought—

"Rem," he says, trying not to leak too much of his anxiety into his voice.

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't look up. She's too focused, too worried, she can't stop to think, there's no time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zash has noticed that something's wrong, something doesn't fit, this wasn't an accident.

And he can't hear Nai.

"Rem...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Zash can hear her a lot better than he can hear his brother. She's terrified, terrified that this will fail, that they won't survive, or that they will but be all alone on this planet—

There's one stray thought that she tries not to think because she knows Zash is listening—

Permalink Mark Unread

...Nai did it. It didn't take a whole thought, even without Rem having fully thought it it was still the last bit he needed to make the connection. He turns to Nai slowly, dawning horror creeping into his face.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nai—notices. Flinches. Then opens up again, lets Zash see it.

He meant for all humans to die. He meant for only he and Zash and their sisters to survive, to build a world for only them, so that—doesn't Zash understand? So that nothing like Tesla (a spark of sharp agony at the memory, replaced by anger and hurt almost as soon as it appears) can ever happen again.

He meant for all humans to die, but he didn't think, it didn't occur to him, that Rem was human. "Rem," he repeats, not turning to look at Zash. Not bearing the thought of seeing Zash's face, his judgment. "Come with us," he says, extending his hand out to her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She does look up, then, and she still—her thoughts and her heart are still filled only with love. She isn't in Nai's head but she understands, she knows what happened and why and she doesn't blame them, doesn't judge them.

Her face softens as she stops what she's doing to walk over to them and take their hands in hers, kneeling down so she's eye level with the small boys—not even two years old, but looking like they're eight. They're wonderful. Beautiful. Her sons, the only ones she'll ever have, and she feels so privileged to have had as long as she did with them. "My darling boys," she says. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry that we couldn't be enough. That I couldn't be enough. I love both of you, so much. I know you will have beautiful, wonderful lives. Love each other. Love other people. Forgive. You will be in my heart always." She kisses both of their hands and then returns to her console.

Permalink Mark Unread

They're already strapped in and Zash doesn't have enough time to process this, to react, to understand that this is goodbye, before the glass front of the escape pod comes down and seals them in. "Rem, no, no please—" It lurches as the airlock door shuts in front of them and the bay door opens behind them and then the automated system engages the thrusters and the pod quickly starts to make its way away from the ship. "Rem!!!!!!"

Permalink Mark Unread

No, no, this is all wrong, he didn't mean for this to happen, Rem wasn't supposed to die, he, he, he—

Permalink Mark Unread

Zash turns to face his brother and grab him by the shoulders. "Why? How, how could you? How—"

Permalink Mark Unread

[how could you? she died because of you! how could you!!!!]

He's sobbing uncontrollably and he's still punching his brother even though Nai has long since stopped struggling and is now just bleeding and bruised.

Permalink Mark Unread

Long past the point where a human would've passed out, but neither of them is human.

[I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, I didn't want to, didn't mean it—] Because he'd blocked that memory. It took seeing it from Zash like this, pieced together from what Zash remembered and what the plants could see, for him to properly remember. [I didn't, didn't, I'm sorry, I—]

Permalink Mark Unread

And Zash collapses in front of him, still sobbing but no longer fuelled by anger. He can't hold onto the anger anymore. [you took them all from me. you killed them. you hurt them. all of them. and I kept, kept forgiving you, but you never said sorry!!! why am I forgiving you? why did I forgive you? you don't deserve my forgiveness, and you never even asked! Luida had to ask for you!!!!!!!]

Permalink Mark Unread

He doesn't—he can't—he had to be Knives—

Permalink Mark Unread

[fuck Knives! there was no Knives then, you were a scared child and you acted out like a child and you killed so many people and, and, and I don't care if it was worth it, I don't care if you still believe it was right, I don't give a flying fuck about Knives, I want to know that my brother understands, I need to know that you love me and that you're sorry, I need Nai to know it was wrong—]

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course he knows it was wrong!!!!! He's a plant, too!!!!! Does, did, did Zash really think—he didn't want to kill Rem, he didn't want to kill anyone, he hates himself for doing it, he hates Knives, and, and—

[I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I, you're, you're right, I was a child. I shouldn't have done it, I've regretted it every day, I know I've made things worse, I know it's my fault all of this happened. I'm sorry. I'm sorry I killed people you loved, I'm sorry I hurt you, I'm sorry, I know it was wrong. I don't want, I, I don't know if you should forgive me. I'm sorry. I might do it again. I'm sorry.]

Permalink Mark Unread

Zash pushes him away and gets to his feet then staggers out. He needs to be away, needs to, he didn't say any of the things he'd meant to say and he said many things he didn't mean to and he can't, he can't be around someone who says that he might do it again

He goes back to his room with Yvette and cries in her arms.

Permalink Mark Unread

She’d been reading, but she’s got enough of a feel for, if not precisely her new psychic powers, at least sensing Zash with them. She hadn’t been looking, but he’s not very good at hiding, and he’s very upset.

So she is absolutely ready to scoop him up in her arms and hold him, petting him and sending [lovelovelove]

Permalink Mark Unread

[I hate him so much]

[how did we become so different, how did this happen]

[they're dead, Yvette. all of them. everyone. they're all dead.]

Permalink Mark Unread

He's of course not expecting any kind of answer, which is convenient, because she definitely doesn't have one. It's awful and unfair and she's so, so sorry. They (she and Zash, if not Nai) will try to make this... better, if not right. Even if things will never, really, be all right, after all that's happened. But it'll be better.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's, really, all he can ask for.

Fuck, he really didn't want to break the illusion. He really wanted to believe everything was going to be okay, with Nai. Now they're at the mercy of, of Knives, whenever Nai deigns to finally have his little think about it.

Because Zash isn't sure he can be around his brother again until they get this squared away. All his life, for the past century and a half, he's hoped he'd find a way, find a way to redeem his brother and make him not be Knives. He's not sure he really believed it, because he didn't really have a plan. Maybe a part of him had hoped it would've been enough to just have a long conversation or something.

That's stupid, of course. If one conversation were all it took, the last century and a half wouldn't have happened.

But Zash doesn't know what else it will take, and he's terrified that the answer is that it'll be impossible, and now there's not really any more wishful thinking or hoping. Maybe they'll argue some more, he doesn't know, but it's real now and everything he does counts and, and he doesn't know whether being angry and hurt at his brother and beating him to a pulp helped. It didn't even make him feel better.

Permalink Mark Unread

A conversation is at least a start, instead of... it seems like they'd both just been running away from each other? While tricking themselves into thinking it's a game of chase, or that they're just too busy doing other things instead of avoiding each other. Going around and around this wide dusty world of theirs, knowing they need to talk and then never doing it. Like kids playing tag, or maybe hide and seek, but both too afraid to ever really touch.

But yes, it's normal to feel like shit when one fights with a beloved family member. Even if that beloved family member has... done some objectively horrible things.

Though, honestly, having people Nai considers worthwhile ('plants,' she thinks wryly, even though she's not one of those) be furious with him is probably really good for him. He's been surrounded by his sisters, who can't bring themselves to be angry with anything, ever, and people he despised. Who always hated him and probably also themselves. So. This is likely an excellent wakeup call.

Permalink Mark Unread

Goddamnit, they had been avoiding each other, hadn't they.

Well. He hopes she's right. He hopes they can make this work. But for now, he needs to be distracted.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, no complicated feelings here, no sir. Those are for designated complicated feelings times, one of which has now ended so they have some breathing room for the next one.

[And how would you like to be distracted, hm?]

She already knows. Poor hybrid alien, corrupted by the humans to have a libido. So inconvenient, but it's so useful for things sometimes!!

Permalink Mark Unread

Hey you know what they haven't tried much of yet is making use of his shapeshifting. Is Yvette by any chance bisexual?

Permalink Mark Unread

What a silly question to ask, mind reader.

(The answer is yes.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Nghhhhh.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zash needn't have worried about Nai not doing his think, at least not after this whole fight, because Nai has realised he had been kinda putting it off and now he's not going to, anymore. He's going to do it right here, right now, on the floor, in a small puddle of his own blood.

Permalink Mark Unread

It felt kind of out of the blue, that fight. Everything had felt fine. Mostly. Pretty much fine. He had still kinda been chafing under the constraint of not being allowed to rescue his sisters but it was kind of alright. And Zash had been uncomfortable with that and changed the subject when it came up but that was okay. And Yvette was still in retrospect kind of handling him with kid gloves because he hadn't done his think yet. And they'd been snuggling as if everything were fine even though it really wasn't fine.

Okay okay okay it wasn't okay at all he'd just been scared.

He's scared.

What is he scared of?

Is he scared that it'll turn out that Knives was a mistake, and he killed so many people, and hurt so many others, for nothing? That he's just a monster, pain and simple? That none of it was at all different from the way it was when he crashed the ships, which he did because he was a baby and traumatised and terrified and angry and hurting and then it made everything worse and he killed his mum—

Or is he scared that it was the right move, that maybe the crash didn't go as well as planned but there just isn't any way for humanity and plants to coexist? That Knives is in fact necessary? That he and the people he loves will be forever at odds, that Zash and Yvette will hate him forever for what he has to do?

...the answer is obvious, when he puts it like that.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's scared of both things, and he doesn't want to find out the answer because whatever the answer will be it'll be terrifying. It's that simple.

Permalink Mark Unread

But he'll be terribly wronging all three of them if he keeps putting it off.

So.

What's the question?

Permalink Mark Unread

Should Knives exist?

Permalink Mark Unread

Knives was literally made for the purpose of rescuing plants.

No, that's not quite right.

Knives is the person Nai becomes after decades of honing himself into a weapon and cutting out everything that's not about rescuing plants. He's the person Nai becomes after trimming the fat in his personality and habits and thoughts and feelings whenever they didn't serve the purpose of rescuing plants, while at the same time nurturing and sharpening and encouraging all of the habits that made him more effective at it.

Permalink Mark Unread

The sacrifices included a lot of his empathy.

They included a lot of his memories.

Was it worth it?

Permalink Mark Unread

It helped him save more plants.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nai still exists.

Of course he does. Knives is Nai. Not all Nais are Knives but Knives still is Nai. And then, after several weeks around those two people, other feelings and thoughts and desires started to grow out again, ones that aren't about rescuing plants, or not just about that. Those growths are Nai, too, but they're not Knives, and Knives is still here, underneath them. Nai can still trim them away again, and then he'll be Knives.

Permalink Mark Unread

Should Knives exist?

...that's a stupid question. Why does Knives exist? Why did Nai build/become him?

Permalink Mark Unread

Because no one else would stand up for his sisters. Because not even his brother would, they themselves most certainly wouldn't, and the idea of watching all of them be fed into the all-consuming hungry maw of humanity for decades until they were all dead, and then watch humanity not even survive after that because there's no way they could survive without plants, would kill him. It's like watching a mindless beast eat all of its seed corn and then starve afterwards, except also the seed corn is sapient and loves the beast and is offering itself to the beast willingly out of love.

Someone needs to think about the seed corn.

(That metaphor got away from him a bit.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(But it's his fault, isn't it? That humanity is consuming his sisters like it is. If they hadn't been having to fight tooth and nail for their survival they wouldn't need this, like Zash's arcology demonstrates. Yvette said as much, too.)

Permalink Mark Unread

It doesn't matter if it's his fault. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't, what matters is what he does with what he has. Maybe he shouldn't have crashed the ships, fine, but he did, and on the planet he currently lives on in the situation he's currently in that's what's happening.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fine. So the point here is, does he still need to rescue his sisters? Is that it?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes. Definitionally, there's no one better than Knives that Nai could be for the sole goal of doing that, to the exclusion of all else, because he is constantly and continually working towards becoming the best Knives he can be. But Nai did and does care about other things, so why did he sharpen himself into a monomaniacal optimiser focused on this?

Permalink Mark Unread

Because if he hadn't, his sisters would have died, and even though he also cared about other things he could not live in a world where all of his sisters were dead. Even though this is not his only goal in life, it is important enough to him that he couldn't afford to let that happen.

Because even though he did, there were other things in the world that were satisfying his other wishes. Even though he'd turned himself into a blade, Zash still existed, spreading love and hope to others. Even though he'd made himself into this creature that only aims for one thing, he still got other things anyway.

Permalink Mark Unread

And has that changed?

Permalink Mark Unread

...it might have. Actually.

Permalink Mark Unread

Care to elaborate for the mental construct you're keeping in your mind as a convoluted but effective way to reason through these issues?

Permalink Mark Unread

His sisters may not all die even if he's not Knives. Regardless of the past, of what he did, of the reckoning he might have to go through, of the searing regret he's only barely started to feel about all the pain he's caused, it may be the case that right now he doesn't need Knives anymore. Right now it may be possible for him to be himself again, to have more of his own personality and wishes and habits and pasttimes, without that causing untold death and suffering.

Permalink Mark Unread

And how would he find out if that's the case?

Permalink Mark Unread

He has an experiment to run.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yvette turns out to still have bodily needs, when Nai’s gate is closed or otherwise out of reach. So carnal distractions cannot in fact go on indefinitely, at least not in these circumstances. It’s probably for the best, they likely would have been stuck there a while. Zash noticed before she did, because of course he did, but once it was pointed out to her it’s easy enough to sort out. She had enough self awareness and sense to request water before she passed out in her lover’s arms, exhausted and happy and sending [love] even as her consciousness faded.

She’s the first one to wake, but she’s in no particular hurry to get up. The prospect of leaving her bed and seeing the fate of the world outside in the wake of the twins having their proper fight is daunting enough to chase away her desire to work. And besides, Zash is comfy and snuggly and warm.

Permalink Mark Unread

zzzzzzzzz

(His dreams aren't exactly nightmares but they're not very pleasant right now either. He's having fights with her and Nai and Morgan and Rem and Brad and Luida about extremely serious and extremely stupid things and his brain can't decide which specific combination is happening at any given time.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(To the extent Nai is leaking through their connection, he feels... mostly alright. If she pays any attention. He's not even hiding, either.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, honey. Can Zash's not-quite-nightmares lighten up a bit if she projects adoration at him? Let's find out.

Nai meanwhile can get a vague and fuzzy [hello I'm awake but not social yet, I hope you are well] of acknowledgement. She's not as good at plants are at multitasking, but she's still capable.

Permalink Mark Unread

[acknowledgement]

Permalink Mark Unread

The adoration lightens the dreams up for only a couple of minutes before it stirs him awake. "Nnn."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Damn. My nefarious plot to give you good dreams has been foiled," she sighs, petting Zash. "Good morning, love."

Permalink Mark Unread

He can't literally purr but he can at least project a mental sound of purring while he presses himself against her petting like a cat looking for more scritches.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's extremely cute and this gets him more scritches, yes. They can totally avoid facing the day for a little while.

The unfortunate thing about being in each other's heads is that he can absolutely tell that she's aware they're putting off facing the day, and especially Nai, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nai, who's Nai, they don't need to face anyone today and most certainly no one called Nai. In fact they don't need to do anything at all today, look at how he's hiding under the covers because it is a sensible and mature thing to do when you don't have to do anything at all today.

Permalink Mark Unread

She agrees, but unfortunately she's a bit out of practice at self delusion. But she's happy to distract herself with how absolutely adorable he is when he's cranky and has just woken up. She missed out on this when he was sneakily making sure to always wake up before her!! This was clearly a travesty!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

Look does she blame him. Everything worked out fine by divine providence but he was madly in love with her and even while he's having bad dreams he absolutely leaks that all over everywhere and she'd have NOTICED and then she'd have tried to pretend she hadn't and he'd notice she had anyway and that sounds like an absolutely terrible time for all involved Morgan most of all.

Permalink Mark Unread

No, no, this is fine, she's not actually doubting his tactical decisions, she even agrees with them, just. Gosh he's cute. He's so cute!!!!! Look at him, so grumpy and with messy hair!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

He's pretty sure his hair has a life of its own and just always reverts to looking the same so it's not just a sleep thing. It's always like this.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, it's very charming. Though, honestly, she is not the person to complain to about unruly hair right now, has he seen the mess the total cellular regeneration has made of hers? She desperately needs a haircut. It's a gigantic unruly mess that she just has been unwilling to deal with and has been pinning away so as not to. His hair seems to revert to what he feels is His Hairstyle, that sounds much nicer than 'grown all at once.' She used to have actual styling present!

Permalink Mark Unread

He bets she could get that to work for her too somehow. It is pretty sticky, he had a hard enough time changing it ever because the correct way for him to look was identical to Nai and then Yvette fell in love with him and now he just can't be anyone else.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe. But maybe not, the mechanism by which she is a plant hybrid is different. They'll have to see.

.... Wait, she broke him?? But she's in love with him as him-the-person not him-the-body! (Though don't get her wrong his body is very appealing and she's found herself surprisingly into his scars.) They literally just had excellent kinky shapeshifter sex, why does her being in love with him stop him from changing how he looks???

Permalink Mark Unread

Well because when he changes he's being something other than what he is, he developed a whole gender and self-concept over the decades and now he has a lot of difficulty imagining himself as anything different. And there's also the whole thing he crossed out there about how the fact that he knows what Nai looks like means that he can't really change what he fundamentally looks like because he fundamentally looks like Nai.

In theory, he guesses, they could synchronise changing, but they haven't, and that runs against the self-concept thing again.

Permalink Mark Unread

... Huh. Okay. That makes sense. Well, for the record, she loves him for him, and he is a unique plant hybrid who cheats at physics and biology and can morph his body into whatever he wants, and that's awesome, actually.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's gonna make him cry come on he's been having such a great run of not crying lately!

Also, uh, he just went and thought about how much he loves and misses Nai and they had a fight yesterday and he's feeling awful about it again.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's okay if he needs to cry. He has been not crying for quite a while, he's got a lot to make up for.

... Though, Yvette's also aware that Nai isn't hiding, and from what she can see looks mostly all right from a psychic perspective, so. Oops. Zash might not have been looking, but she can't quite help it, she's sharing a gate with him.

Permalink Mark Unread

...yeah huh Nai isn't hiding.

[ping?]

Wait what's he doing he didn't mean to do this.

Permalink Mark Unread

[acknowledgement]

[big conversation needed]

Permalink Mark Unread

...scary. What if instead he hides under the covers again.

Permalink Mark Unread

That is perfectly valid, though she'll answer for him since he's hiding.

[acknowledgement but request for further delay]

Then, with more affection:

[Zash needs more time to hide first.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[legit]

Permalink Mark Unread

Did he just say legit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nai is trying to respect this delay request so shut up Zash.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nghhhhhh he loves his brother :(

Permalink Mark Unread

He is often pretty great! Though of course when she and Zash are mind cuddling like this he can feel the various caveats that thought has, which are many. But. Without those (many) caveats that she's not engaging with because she's trying to give Zash time to relax, Nai (and not Knives) is often great and she does see why he loves him.

Would Zash perhaps like more pets? She can provide more pets. A blank brain is not something she can provide, though. Sorry.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's why he loves her. Being petted and mind cuddled is nice even when he's having complicated feelings about his mass murderer twin and he's glad that she's the sort of person who won't just pretend his twin isn't a mass murderer for his comfort. It feels...

...this might need some thinking...

...it feels much more solid and real that she's not excusing Nai and she's seeing all of him and she still sees someone worthy of love there. Most people would either just hate him or try to pretend the bad things didn't happen and it's more complicated than that and Yvette understands that and so her feelings and thoughts feel more stable and grounded and not like a whiff of reality is going to send them crumbling, in either direction.

Permalink Mark Unread

She feels it's inaccurate to point at one singular thing and go 'yes, this, this is why I love this person,' because love and thought and especially people are complicated and more nuanced than that. But she acknowledges that her unwillingness to not admit to herself when she's dumbing down the world for her own convenience and therefore unwillingness to let herself get away with it is a rather major trait of hers, so. As Nai would (apparently, to her delight!) say: legit.

Anyway, she's glad he finds her being a pedantic stickler for details charming instead of insufferable.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ugh he's not sure there's any point in hiding anymore, he's well and truly awake and apparently hellbent on upsetting himself on his own here.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hmmmmm, you know what this seems to call for? Breakfast. Maintaining their vaguely mortal seeming forms. Because she's a bit hungry, so she bets he is too. That gives them an actually acceptable thing to sort out that definitely isn't procrastinating at all! Isn't being human-alike sometimes convenient?

Permalink Mark Unread

...he really loves her. Yes, let's go get breakfast.

Permalink Mark Unread

Breakfast! Since Yvette hasn't had to eat in days, there's actual novelty to making food, instead of it being a horrible annoying chore she has to do several times a day. She will go fancy and make pancakes!

Permalink Mark Unread

Zash literally does not remember the last time he had pancakes. Has he ever had pancakes? He must have. At some point. Probably.

Anyway does she want help? He can probably help.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not really. They're like, three ingredients and then flipping them at the appropriate time, something that can be a bit tricky. He can flip his own pancakes if he really wants? But not hers, because she's pretty sure he's going to mess up his first pancake flip. That is how that works. Either way, he can pick out what kind of things he wants to go in his pancakes. If he wants any at all, that is. (She likes adding the little red synthfruit cubes, personally.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Uhhhhh. Can. Can he opt out of having preferences actually? He'll just have whatever she's having.

Permalink Mark Unread

She snorts. Sure, he can opt out of having preferences. But that sounds like she should do a couple with different toppings and see if he has a preference.

... Though, if she's going through all of the trouble of making pancakes at all, and getting out all of the ingredients to properly help people new to pancakes figure out preferences...

"Do you want pancakes, Zazi?" she asks the air.

Nai gets a similar offer, though his is over the psychic plant network. [I'm making pancakes, do you want any?]

Permalink Mark Unread

The air buzzes with amusement and a couple of flying worms make their way into the kitchen (more visibly than the ones hidden away everywhere).

Permalink Mark Unread

Does he want... what?

Permalink Mark Unread

"New plan Zash, you do get to help!" she laughs. "Fetch the various colors of synthfruit and get them hydrated and chopped, I am now running a large scale taste test for all of the strange inhuman people capable of eating.”

[It is a type of food. I'll just go with yes, and leave you a variety plate outside the kitchen, how about.]

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay?

Permalink Mark Unread

You know what that's great actually he likes feeling useful he'll help with that.

Permalink Mark Unread

There are many colors of synthfruit to chop! An entire rainbow. Pink, red, dark red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, brown, and white. She needs them hydrated and at about this size, please and thank you. Keep them separated, she will not be party to a monstrosity of dumping them all in one pancake unless someone really, really wants her to. ... Zazi's going to want her to, aren't they. Sigh. Fine. She'll do one, but it'll pain her.

"If Morgan's out and about and retrievable she can have some too, and I bet she already has preferences. If you tell her pancakes are on offer we might even get into a stupid food argument that you can watch, Zazi."

She's going to need to make a lot of pancake batter for this (especially if Morgan shows up), but it's not like the ingredients are complicated. The chopping is the most tedious part, and that's been handed off to Zash.

Permalink Mark Unread

Morgan does indeed show up. Her favorite flavor of synthfruit is brown, which is objectively the best flavor, thank you, and she will take a dozen pancakes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Everyone else can try various types of pancake, though. One pancake per flavor, sliced into thirds for each person who needs to form pancake opinions. Yvette will make more as preferences make themselves apparent. Nai's plate of flavor tests will be politely deposited outside of the kitchen for retrieval at his leisure, because she's pretty sure they'll all be happier that way.

(A part of her notes that quartering the pancakes would have been easier, and that Elendira would have been an excellent fourth inhuman person to be introduced to pancakes, but. … well. That’s not really actionable, is it.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"This body doesn't have taste receptors, you know," Zazi says conversationally, having brought their body to the kitchen at some point.

Permalink Mark Unread

"And yet you're here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We have antennae!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"So why bring that up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"To let you know there'll be bugs rolling around in food."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was just going to give you your own plate," says Yvette, in a deadpan. "And how you interact with the food on that plate is your business."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're so thoughtful!"

Permalink Mark Unread

That but actually.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I also figured you're going to ask me to put all of the flavors into one monstrosity of a pancake at the end, instead of sensibly divided like I've been doing. Which I will do, but for the record it'll taste awful. I guess not necessarily to your antennae, but to humans it'd be awful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Adding brown synthfruit makes everything better, I don't know what you're talking about."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like it too, but not in a multiflavor monstrosity. And generally not in breakfast, it feels too much like dessert for me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's weird, but you do you."

Permalink Mark Unread

He's not gonna cry he's not gonna cry he's not—

Permalink Mark Unread

—he looks at the door, suddenly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think Nai is on his way here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeaaaaaah, I invited him because it occurred to me that nobody would have introduced him to pancakes either, but will leave his plate outside for him so we all can continue avoiding feelings and conversations. Sorry. I guess I should have asked, but it seemed more efficient this way."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"Both twins, man."

Permalink Mark Unread

Morgan is so irritated by the romantic tension and social maneuvering to pancake ratio.

"Uh huh. Hey, scootch over, I'm getting another pan and just going to make my own, you're going to take too long if you're running a pancake charity."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yvette snorts, and scootches.

"Have you made them before?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope! But how hard can it be?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"..... I'll make even more batter," sighs Yvette, longsuffering.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh can we help can we help can we help?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"With making batter or with making pancakes? Either way, sure, but the logistics change, depending."

Permalink Mark Unread

Here's a second body to obviate that question.

Permalink Mark Unread

"... Assistance with batter now, and then after the scientific pancake flavors are complete, I will let you at the synthfruit and batter, and you can experiment, how about. There's only so much room at this stove and it'll already be cramped with two."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw mannnn," says one body that then dissolves into bugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know, the constraints of the physical world vex me, too," agrees Yvette. "We do what we can to cope. You'll get to experiment with everything as you like, though."

Pancakes are made. The systematic flavors (including a control pancake without synthfruit, because she is a proper scientist, thank you) are cut into thirds and put onto three separate plates for the inexperienced pancake goers to try.

Permalink Mark Unread

Morgan does in fact burn several pancakes, but is fine with the results and will depart with all twelve of her brown-flavored edible prizes. Before anyone has any feelings or implicating banter or whatever again.

Permalink Mark Unread

So Zazi is entirely free to play with making pancakes of whatever flavors they like, and Yvette will take Nai's plate out to him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nai is there when she does, looking...

...perfectly neutral. He doesn't want to figure out what to look like on the outside, facial expressions and body language are fake anyway.

Permalink Mark Unread

They are absolutely fake, it's true, but she'll smile at him anyway and give him a psychic greeting and affection, to go with his plate. Also instructions about syrup (there is a little bowl of the stuff, on the side of the plate) and its usual use in pancakes.

Permalink Mark Unread

He doesn't really understand why.

And he doesn't want to face Zash right now. Not before... not after... not now. Not alone. So he gives her a nod and floats away.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yvette is nonetheless aware that he's glad he was included, and furthermore deeply grateful that he was included in such a way that he could be a massive introvert and not have to interact with anyone. She gives a physical wave, and then heads back into the kitchen to have her own plate of non-experimental red-flavored pancakes.

She will cuddle Zash while she eats.

"So! Do you have pancake flavor preferences now?" she wonders, amused.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope. Preferences are for other people. I'll have everything."

Permalink Mark Unread

At first there were a couple of bugs cautiously antennaing the flavours, but now they're just dancing around in the mess their plate's become and sharing pieces with each other. Zazi's humanoid body is bouncing back and forth, looking delighted.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, as long as you're willing to be the one to chop the everything. I don't think you'd like a pancake monstrosity of all of the synthfruit flavors, though." She did not end up making a monstrosity, that is left for Zazi to do for themselves. "But some of the combinations are pretty good. My mom likes pink and yellow combined. ... This yellow, not the other, lesser yellow that's more popular in Julai."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lesser yellow?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Synthfruit was created based on fruit from Old Earth—well, not just fruit, but mostly fruit—uh fruit was a kind of flora-based food—and some fruit shared colours so there are some synths that share a colour or are very similar but taste very differently."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right. So there are several flavors of yellow. One of which is, in my opinion, terrible. Though this isn't always true, there's a second purple that's pretty good, actually. I had it once on the sand steamer, and I'm not sure why the purple I know beat that out in December. This is what I meant by humans having impassioned arguments about food, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We should steal more food." Pause. "We have been informed that the Zazie from cities have opinions on this and occasionally eat each other about it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...aren't you a city Zazi? Julai is like right over there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A little bit. We have an understanding with the Julai us and a bit of blending but we're mostly wasteland Zazi."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "So... the Zazie do in fact have dramatic food arguments, it's just this section of you didn't realize it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. Do you want me to convey Julai Zazi's feelings about yellow? They might be violent."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, thank you. I think it's probably for the best that we have more flavors than less, even if some of them are not to my taste."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your loss. Betcha could eat them."

Permalink Mark Unread

This earns another giggle! "Probably, but that'd be a net loss, with how humans work!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They have bad opinions anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

“I’ll leave that up to you to collectively sort out, I think I’ve already got my hands full when it comes to convincing others that I’m actually right.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"No fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

(Nai likes the brown.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"If I were maximizing fun instead of other things my actions would look very different," she agrees.

(Would Nai like more of the brown as pancakes? He can also just have the brown synthfruit on its own, he might also like that.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(He's kind of anxious to talk and trying to give them space but the longer it goes the more scared he gets.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(Deal with it.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(Zash why are you in this call.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(If Nai didn't want Zash listening in he could've hidden. Or at least not broadcasted.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(He wasn't broadca—oh. He kinda was. Um.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(Affection and amusement.)

Well, Zash? Are they ready for big proper conversations, now?

Permalink Mark Unread

Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhh can they instead go walk their dog. Zash is sure he can convince Brad to clone them a dog for them to walk it.

Here's a mental concept of what a dog is, though it's third hand because the ship didn't have a dog so he only knows those from like movies and stuff. You walk them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ahuh. Sounds weird, she doesn't see the appeal. This all sounds less like he actually needs time to be ready for a conversation, and more like he's falling into old habits of avoiding Nai again. Is he doing that?

Permalink Mark Unread

No, because his excuses are very transparent and he's not even trying to believe them he just doesn't WANNA.

(They had a fight and it's not like things were peachy before but the only actual full fight they'd ever had before was when Nai took the ships down and they didn't speak for five years and it wasn't okay and Zash is terrified that things aren't gonna be okay and he's terrified that he's gonna punch Nai out again and that'll make things worse and and and and)

Permalink Mark Unread

She reaches over to hold him so she can pet him properly.

"Yeah, I know," she murmurs, softly. "I'll be there this time, though. No matter what happens. Does that help?"

Permalink Mark Unread

...yeah. It does. Because if any yelling happens she can do the yelling instead of him that would be unkind and honestly Zash does not actually think that'd happen at all really, he'd just end up yelling himself anyway.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wouldn't mind doing some yelling, actually. It's not as... close to home with me?"

[He's understandable and sympathetic and often charming, but not my twin.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[oh, sure, if you want to do some yelling of your own you are free to do so I just think I might want to do some yelling too and I don't WANNA but if it happens it happens, you know]

[also honestly I'm not entirely sure "twin" really encapsulates all he is to me. —uh, not just because of the whole "our feelings for each other could be mapped onto romance" thing, more because there's a lot of stuff the word in human contexts means that our relationship doesn't have and vice-versa]

[I think something like "soulmate" except less exclusively romantic would be closer to it? there is... a very real sense in which he is my other half.]

Permalink Mark Unread

Darling. Zash. Sweetheart. Love.

She's literally in your head. She knows. She just used 'twin' as a casual gloss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well.

Fair.

Just.

...

...he's scared.

Losing Nai like this would hurt a lot.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.

But she thinks at this point fretting more about it will just make it worse, and the only thing to do is to just. Rip the proverbial bandaid off. ... Not that he's ever needed one of those, but still.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well.

(The mental image he projects is of all the various scars and metal plates and stitched bits decorating his body.)

Not bandaids.

Permalink Mark Unread

Uh huh.

[He's as good for conversation as he'll be anytime soon. Where are you?] she sends, including Zash in the broadcast to Nai. And then she can gently tug him to his brother for the necessary conversation.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mental picture of the plants room. ...and no small measure of anxiety.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah he'll be tugged. Even though he's scared.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.

She sends both a psychic hug as she brings the twins together to have their... conversation. Fight, maybe. They'll see.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nai is floating cross-legged in the middle of the circular platform in the center of the walkway, as he is sometimes wont to do. The plate that had his pancakes sits on the floor next to the console, no pancakes in sight. He opens his eyes when they walk in, and... does not look away, even though he really wants to.

He's not hiding at all. He's scared, and anxious, and he really really likes them and wants them to like him and he is in deep conflict because of that and he wants to do the right thing and he isn't sure what the right thing is and he's not sure he's shaped to do the right thing and and and

Permalink Mark Unread

...oh, Nai.

Zash lets go of Yvette's hand then walks over to his twin and wraps his arms around him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zash is making this worse what if they become enemies forever!!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

Then they'd better get as many hugs as they can beforehand, right?

Permalink Mark Unread

Awwwwwww. Yvette can hug him too.

Though she suspects they are not going to become enemies forever, actually? Correct her if she's wrong but there seems to be a decidedly.... 'let's negotiate' feel to him?

Permalink Mark Unread

Well. Yes. Kind of. He just. Um. So here's the thing.

Permalink Mark Unread

...he kind of just wants to dump the entire memory of the last several hours of his soul searching into their brains but that would probably be rude or something?

Permalink Mark Unread

[also I think Yvette did not inherit the background processing of plantlike communication methods that you and I have]

Permalink Mark Unread

Wait she didn't?????? The fuck kinda discount independent planting did Conrad even do there????

Permalink Mark Unread

The shittiest kind!!! The absolute shittiest kind!!!!! He was terrible and she told him so!!!!!!!

Nai can probably braindump on Zash, and have him translate for her though? But she might also be able to process it all if he needs to dump it on her, it just might take her a bit. It certainly wouldn't hurt her, she did fine while saying hello to all of his (and that's the flavor, his and Zash's) sisters. She thinks she's doing pretty well at this, thank you very much.

Permalink Mark Unread

...okay yeah if she can handle them she can handle this and Zash can translate what's needed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okayyyy that was a lot Zash'll need to think on that a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yvette actually manages to reply faster than Zash. Nai sent over a lot, but a lot of it was really only important for his own personal growth, not on 'here is what we are going to do about it' level? Which can be safely shelved for later perusal. It's interesting and important, but she is absolutely accustomed to sifting through large amounts of data for what is relevant to taking action. That is a skill she has cultivated her entire life.

So, if she's understanding this correctly, he... wants them to directly, tangibly prove that they can in fact have humans working with plants without killing them horrifically. Because then he wouldn't need to be Knives in order to keep his sisters alive, he could just work with them and they could claw their way to a world that is acceptable. Does she have that right?

Permalink Mark Unread

...yeah, basically. No rigging the game, though, no grabbing only hand-picked amazing humans (which apparently EXIST, he guesses), he wants scalable systems that are robust to bad actors and people trying to exploit the system and cultural erosion and all that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wait hold on the other stuff there is important!

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure, and she’s not discounting it, and will pick it apart later, but the crux of the issue is definitely over the genocide. So if that’s squared away, they’re basically set!

And, yeah, that all sounds extremely reasonable, and in fact was the sort of thing she was trying to make with her problem solving and his sisters. She’s down, unrigged scientific test for the fate of humanity, sounds like the fairest thing possible. Probably multiple concurrent tests to properly verify the results, actually, humans are inconvenient about not being predictable and whatnot.

Permalink Mark Unread

...no. Well, yes, but in the sense that if even a single one of them fails the deal is off—

Permalink Mark Unread

Come on that's a bit extreme—

Permalink Mark Unread

The whole point is that whatever they come up with has to be able to withstand anything. If it works with some humans but not others then it doesn't work.

Permalink Mark Unread

He’s defining ‘fails’ as ‘humans in their set up experiments kill one of his sisters,’ correct? Because, again, totally fair if he’s assisting in setting up the systems with the sisters he’s saved! That tangibly makes it a mistake to even try to work with them. And also kills valuable irreplaceable sweeties that are beautiful and precious and almost perfect except for how bad they are at self care. Which, to be clear, she does not want to allow to happen regardless.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah. Yeah, that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mrrr.

Permalink Mark Unread

What. What is it Zash.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nothing. He doesn't want to ruin this. He does agree that if that gets rid of Knives then most of the problem is gone.

Permalink Mark Unread

…. Well there’s still the problem of the humans outside of their setup horrifically killing plants, that still needs to stop. But the problem between the three of them would be (mostly) sorted. Which is the most important part, she thinks.

And Nai is willing to commit the plants in his jurisdiction to this test? Because it’s much easier to set up functioning systems from the start, instead of wrenching something into correctness against the force of societal momentum. She doesn’t think doing this without his help is possible without a lot more death, of plants and humans alike.

Permalink Mark Unread

So long as she's aware that he's going to rip the plants out and come back to February if it looks like the humans are about to kill them, yeah he's fine with that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Absolutely, and in fact she agrees! She was thinking that the plants would get shuffled out of the humans’ ability to interact with them before it even got close to that. Specifically, swapped out with a more robust and healthy sister to pick up where she left off, while the first recovers here. Relatedly, she would want him to be able to keep an eye on things the entire time because guardian of the plants, she understands that he wouldn’t trust that with anyone else.

Acceptable.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well that was easier than he'd expected. Kind of anticlimactic but he did not want something big here.

Permalink Mark Unread

...he supposes it was, yeah. It could have been much, much, much worse.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nai eyes Zash (psychically) with some scepticism but decides not to chase down the thing Zash is trying to bury a lot there.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yvette totally wants to immediately get to thinking specifics, she was already kind of working on this already but EEEE she could work on it with the knowledge that it would be properly backed instead of being essentially wishful possibility planning!!! Do they need her, or can she literally just go scampering off to the console to return to work like the insane little workaholic she is?

Permalink Mark Unread

Nai wants to give input actually. And he wants to understand her reasoning, and why she thinks this'll work.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zash feels like he's kinda useless here.

Permalink Mark Unread

Don't be silly, Zash! You're needed to shake down that arcology of yours for its secrets! This will be a lot easier if she has an entire library of things to work from!! And also give them her research and stuff but she wants its secrets for her project she has plans!!

But yes, of course, Nai/Knives will be integral to this process and his input is valuable and important and she'd actually be kind of mad if he didn't assist.

Permalink Mark Unread

...oh. Right. The arcology.

.............that means he'll need to, like. Go. Places. To drop messages.

Permalink Mark Unread

He can use Nai's tunnels if he wants?

Permalink Mark Unread

That was not what he was...

...

...you know what. Fine. Yeah. He'll go. He thinks he's been too cooped up in here and crying too much and he wants some fresh air and some time away from Nai.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Nai will try not to take that personally.

Permalink Mark Unread

.... does Zash need her to come with him?

(She totally wants to stay here with all of the neat consoles and figure out how to make this happen, but she does understand if he needs her right now.)

Permalink Mark Unread

No. No, he...

...well he doesn't need time away from her but she is sharing a gate with Nai. And, yeah, he thinks he needs to sort himself out a little bit. He'll miss her (both of them) very much, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes a minute to observe his brain and be sure that he's not nobly sacrificing his wellbeing like the idiot self destructive plant that he is, but...

... yeah, okay. He needs to be doing useful things, and does need some space to sort himself out. And would hate keeping her from doing useful things, and she is in fact super connected to Nai right now, and. They will have forever, to be together, it'll be all right if they have to be apart for a bit of it.

Permalink Mark Unread

...does she want to send him off with a bang though, because he kinda wants to bang if they'll be away from each other a while.

Permalink Mark Unread

.... Really, Zash?

She rolls her eyes, amused.

Fine, fine, but only because she acknowledges that she corrupted him with her human libido, and takes responsibility.

(This is not in fact the only reason.)

Permalink Mark Unread

...this human reproduction thing continues to be bizarre. He'll just not engage with it and go be useful instead. Bye you two.

Permalink Mark Unread

Giving his brother a proper sendoff to be fond of is definitely being useful, thank you!!

But yes, bye~!
