...wow, that's bad. The ones in my universe usually have less person-referencing goals.

Can you figure out what they define as an "elf" and make yourself not count as that? Uploading tech seems to separate the person from the metadata-that-deities-use at least in my universe.

If you're only on one planet and don't have space travel, tungsten rods aren't relevant. (Tungsten is a very dense metal.)

What are your main bottlenecks?

I don't know what you mean by "uploading tech."

Uh, I know they don't count goblins or other elf hybrids...they definitely count elf souls, though, and I can't think of any safe way to fuck with someone's soul enough to not get it to count.

Our main bottlenecks are space and magical power; my sister needs her Soul Crystal at least full enough to power the wards around her kingdom, which puts a limit on the rate at which she can resurrect people, and if she tried expanding the wards the gods would take it as a sign of aggression.

User , the gist of your post seems to be "... memetic/magical hazards ... filtered content ... message ... post ... can understand it ...".

I still cannot understand this post.

You might want to try using only a very small number of very simple words. It would probably be harder to accidentally write a hazardous message that way.

Araisha, what I mean is "technology for separating someone's mind from their brain and body and running it from a computer". That would hopefully also leave your soul connected to your body, which you could then kill, and not to your mind. Do you have computers yet?

Do you need space in part for agriculture? I have some tips for efficient agriculture that might let you grow the same amount of food using less space, depending on what you can eat. List the names of your most common crops, maybe?

We have enough food; the problem is living space.

We don't have computers, what's a computer?

I...don't understand how you could separate a mind from a soul, even theoretically. And even if you could, you'd be unable to do magic, which a lot of people would find unsatisfactory. Also: not being corporeal, not the most satisfactory thing on its own.

I suppose you don't know of any people without souls? Also – what does a Soul Crystal do, assuming you're willing to divulge that information?

A Soul Crystal stores souls and acts as a power source for magic.

I think I'm bringing up a lot of things that are irrelevant to you. Can you tell me what several of your most recent technological developments are, ideally in some different fields?

I don't pay a lot of attention to technological development but my brother-in-law is an engineer, I'll ask my sister to ask him and get back to you.

What sorts of magic do you have?

Also, @⍁⍁⍁⍁⍁⍁, that message came out mostly in a format that I'd parse as "sample text garbage"? I don't think I understood anything meaningful out of it.

Mother Starlight, Dante, it seems there may be something wrong with the translation effect here. Is this correct?

I'm not sure? To get this sort of effect I'd expect either there's a problem with the system or it was intentionally meant to seem… like it was modified sample text garbage…

@Mother Starlight?

Iunno, I'm just a warchannel, and I can't even do that without a body. My sister can do most of the things but you'd have to hit her up for the nerdery and she can't access the forum for some reason.

I'm not sure that gods are likely to be a positive contribution to most societies. Concentrating power in the hands of a single individual or small group thereof will often result in problematic long term consequences. This is especially true if there's a limited ability to replace those individuals if they are found to be incompetent or malicious.

I, uh. I'm doing the best I can, but.

I...think ⍁⍁⍁⍁⍁⍁ might just be like that.

I'm working on it. Dunno if I'll get anywhere.

Regarding the question of the benefits or detriments of gods to society, it seems to me that there are two different questions to ask. You speak of concentrating power, as though it were being relocated away from the people to a central point; but the alternative interpretation is that a god – like any other new person entering a society – merely adds their capabilities to those of society, without diminishing those already present. Certainly there are risks involved in any imbalance of power; but there are many flourishing cultures that do not turn away immigrants for being too talented, or strong, or clever.

Perhaps in your world gods are created or sustained in a way that somehow acts as a drain on others, in which case your argument makes more sense. But I do not think that that is a universal – or perhaps I should say multiversal – constant; and without it, I am not persuaded that your argument holds together in the general case. That said, your point about replacing the malicious and incompetent makes sense; although it would be nice if removing a god could be done nonlethally.

The closest things to gods in my world are magic itself, which does not appear to have opinions, and the Wanderdeep selection system, which decides who has access to the most powerful magic my world has to offer. Although the magecrafters have themselves been mistaken for gods by many primitive cultures. Which makes sense given their frequent habit of inventing entire systems of magic.

Yeah agreed. My problem is not with the idea of gods but with the specific gods that exist and murdered my entire family except my sister.

Novelty, Was the creature caught in your web caught going from outside the cave to in, or inside to out? Can your counterpart record if anything about it changes when the light does? Does it have teeth, and if so, are they sharp or blunt? Does it have claws? Does it have eyes and ears that you can see? If it was coming from outside the cave, can you get your counterpart to (carefully) investigate and record if anything about it changes tomorrow?

I don't think I've read enough about your world's biology to know anything specific about your creature, but if it doesn't change tomorrow, it's probably not a monster. If it is toothless and clawless, or if it has blunt teeth and claws, it is probably not a predator.

.'iyunom., I think Fayet might know something about growing simple nutrient sources in dark places. I will ask her to look into it.

.iunom., In deep caves that sunlight doesn't reach, there are slime-things that have a texture like the plants that grow on the surfaces of still water, but they only grow in specific areas. They usually grow on damp walls of caves, in systems that are near old lava tubes. The caves they grow in usually smell very bad, like hotsprings, and sometimes it gets very difficult to breathe in them and the animals in those caves die. The slime seems to produce its own light, which is red, instead of gathering any light from the sun. Some animals eat the slime, and glow red, but it does not seem to harm them. I am currently testing whether the slime can be used to power devices, and it seems promising so far. The slime is mildly painful to touch, so it has not been tested whether people can eat it, but it seems like the people of your world can be made unusually resilient? Also, some small things that look like plants can grow in old dead plant and animal flesh, and can be eaten for nutrition, although they do not hold any light.

I would guess that those things might rely on some special conditions that it would be expensive to replicate, but they could be useful, since my world's closest analogues don't glow. Tell me more about the slime? Do you know what a genome is or how to sequence one?

The slime forms where water drips, and forms a lot more quickly where it is very humid. If nothing eats or damages it, it eventually grows into soft stalactites and stalagmites. Sometimes if someone gets the slime in a deep cut in their skin, it gets infected.

I do not know what a genome is or how to sequence one, but I can probably learn with an explanation, assuming that whatever principles are behind it apply across worlds.

[moved from here]

(Fayet started to respond, but didn't have time to finish.)

Noetic,

I am not sure. I hope she moves with us, but if she winds up somewhere else, we really want to be able to keep in contact. If your communications technology can be built with the materials we have, she can probably do it. We have some access to supplies for working metal, stone, and glass, and to things from the surface, for now. We're building another set of devices, which we hope work better than the first ones, but they take long enough that if there were another design we should try, we would want to start on it right away, and that we should try working on other things in parallel.

If you already have devices adapted to work deep underground, or that would work with very small changes, it would definitely be a valuable use of time. We don't know how long we have, but it does seem to at least be on the scale of "days". I am not nearly as good as she is with mechanical devices, but I am willing to try, and to start assembling materials for trying to build your telecommunications technology, if that seems a better approach?

The library is very large, and could not be copied quickly or transportably enough. The devices we have now that allow us remote viewing of the library's contents would be too expensive to use in a deeper cave. We're hoping she can adapt their patterns to run on light that is less scarce there.
