this dark elf SAVED spawn?!
Drizzt Do'Urden in Lifesteal
Permalink Mark Unread

Drizzt tried to light the fire with a spark from his dagger.

It had taken longer than it should to break the ice at his fishing pools. The sun dipped past the hills around the valley, covering them in chilling shadows. In the climb back up to the cave, he fell into a snow drift up to his shoulders.

He managed to get back into the cave. His fingers were numb and swollen and too clumsy to make a spark, but he still tried.

He kept trying till night fell. The air turned even icier.

He wasn't getting the fire lit. His sense of what that meant was even number than his fingertips. He knew, he just-- couldn't manage to feel anything about it.

He still had to try to survive. He summoned Guenhwyvar.

She lay down next to him.

He curled up next to her, and wrapped himself as tightly as he could in his cloak.

He fell asleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

And he wakes up on a hill.

Next to him is the word LIFESTEAL, in all caps and obsidian. Above him is a dirt circle of half-built floating islands. There's also a floating sign, BUY, with an arrow down.

Around him: two towers of obsidian, one with a statue of pants floating above it. An obsidian building. A large cartoon plant built out of colored concrete, next to a huge square of ground that has been mined far down into the earth. A brick-and-quartz building. A yellow hexagonal building, clearly intended to evoke honeycomb. A couple bridges across the water, most of which are low-quality wood-and-cobblestone, but one of which looks nicer.

In the water: a ship; a pig statue facing a capybara statue.

On the other side of the water: a nice red-and-white building; a huge, strange triangle of cobblestone, almost a mountain but thin and manmade. A stone-and-green-glass tower with fences around it, low-quality paintings stuck to a few of the fences.

Permalink Mark Unread

This is a strange place, even stranger than the other places he has been on the surface. (This is likely... not the same surface than he was in before, but there's sun and sky above him and it is uncomfortably bright, so it gets to stay as 'the surface.')

The buildings imply habitation. He picks his way towards them carefully, sticking to the shadows, both for stealth and to limit the pain the light.

Permalink Mark Unread

The buildings are empty! However, there's a humanoid (human with red horns and eyes) wearing glowing purple armor picking their way over. He looks like an older teenager— somewhere in the 16-18 range, if he’s human.

"Hey, so, you're new here, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He might be a tiefling? Drizzt isn't sure.

He is braced to be told to leave. "Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Great, that's actually really convenient--uh, I guess you might want to gear up first and stuff, I don't mean to stop you right away, but we've got an investigation going on, and you're the only person on the server who is definitely confirmed innocent, so if you want to help that'd be cool." It's not, actually, cool, it means there's a wildcard that Mapicc literally can't frame, but--keep your friends close and your enemies closer, right? Better he recruits Drizzt than Subz or Poafa. "--Oh, forgot to introduce myself, I'm Mapicc. Nice to meet you."

Permalink Mark Unread

... This was very much not the reaction he was expecting. He expected to be chased away, not asked to help with an investigation.

(The gnolls had asked him to help-- no matter. He will judge Mapicc on his actions, not his own paranoia.)

He does his best not to look over excited about the idea of a friendly conversation. "I would be glad to help. I am Drizzt Do'Urden."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Awesome, nice to meet you Drizzt. The investigation is— you see all the obsidian around?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's hard to miss."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Every night, someone—we’ve been calling them Medusa—turns another build at spawn into obsidian.” Mapicc starts walking to the tower that doesn’t also have a floating pants statue; when they’re close, they can see a small wooden sign in front of it, reading:

To Petrify is to Eternalize/but soon justice will be served

“Yesterday they got the building just north of this one—sign said things always go south—so they’re leaving clues about what they do next. This one’s going to be the courthouse, probably? But there’s not much we can actually do to stop them without figuring out who they are. So that’s what we’ve been trying to do.”

Permalink Mark Unread

He had initially assumed the obsidian was deliberate. It wasn't a common building material in Menzoberranzan, but people had prized it for it's glassy reflectivity in infrasight.

But someone deliberately turning buildings into it? They must be very powerful. They must be stopped.

It's unfortunate his weapons didn't come with him.

"I can help watch."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shit. Okay. “Poafa’s planning on keeping watch tonight, but—mm. We’ll see how it goes. Ro and I have mostly been asking around, trying to see if anyone has information that might be useful. You can keep watch tomorrow, maybe, if Poafa doesn’t catch anyone? Or—mm.”

Mapicc whispers to roshambogames: shit i fucked up
Mapicc whispers to roshambogames: shit i fucked up
Mapicc whispers to roshambogames: shit i fucked up

(His voice is definitely different in tone when talking about Poafa—skeptical, maybe?)

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you believe Poafa needs assistance, I can certainly do that." Helping people with tasks they have been assigned that they cannot do: The Drizzt on Patrol Story.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not that Poafa needs assistance exactly, it's honestly mostly that Poafa is our biggest suspect right now. But it still might be worth letting him stand guard tonight to see what happens; if he doesn't catch anyone and the courthouse turns to obsidian anyway, that's sus, but he might not go for it if someone else is with him--maybe we can have him alone one night and then with you one night, we can see if they're different? If it happens when he's on his own but not when he's with someone else, that's a major point in favor of it being him."

Nice save, Mapicc.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ah. That makes sense. "I would be willing."

Permalink Mark Unread

Huh, not even going to ask for evidence? Well, he'll take it.

"Cool. Uh, don't tell him we suspect him, he thinks we're working together right now. Which, we sort of are."

Permalink Mark Unread

He wishes he could avoid getting involved in games of manipulation and betrayal but just because it was something done in Menzoberranzan did not make it wholly evil. Though he does intend to avoid Poafa except for their shared watch. He would like to at least minimise the amount of lying. "It would be good to give him a chance to prove his innocence."

Permalink Mark Unread

roshambogames whispers to Mapicc: ?
roshambogames whispers to Mapicc: what happened
roshambogames whispers to Mapicc: vc?
Mapicc whispers to roshambogames: in a bit

"Any ideas for how to do that? I'm not, like, sure it's Poafa, it might be Planetlord or Parrot or--anyone, really, we haven't actually ruled anyone out but you. He's just being a little sus, it'd be good to at least check."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How many nights have you all been keeping watch?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It just started yesterday. We haven't kept watch yet, we didn't know it was going to be, like, a recurring thing until today. Plus Ro's busy with off-server stuff. Uh, we know Planet at least was around the first night, and Parrot, that's why I brought them up. Ro says Parrot's doing another thing that's a secret right now and I trust Ro but Parrot's smart enough that he might be faking us out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can't really rule anyone out without more information."

Permalink Mark Unread

Deep sigh. "Yeah. Well, except you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do we know how they might be doing this?" He can fight a wizard, but not unarmed.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I mean, it's not that hard, there's probably still the obsidian farm in the End from when Ro and I built the prison. It'd be annoying to do when no one's on, or if it's just one person so they can't use the farm, but, like, even one person could totally do it if they tried."

Permalink Mark Unread

... that is a string of words. "And then they--" what is the best question to ask here "turn the farmed obsidian into buildings?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They... mine the building and replace it with obsidian?"

He probably shouldn't demonstrate having a lot of obsidian but having a little obsidian is basically fine. Ender chest, shulker box, obsidian, shulker box goes back into ender chest before Drizzt could have a chance to look at it. Time to break a piece of grass and replace it with obsidian. Kind of annoying to mine back, but whatever.

...It probably looks like he's planning to crystal Drizzt. Oops. He makes sure his hands (empty) are clear and visible. "Crystals are banned, don't worry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"By hand. That's less concerning than it could be."

It's good to know crystals are not allowed before he comes into the possession of any. Maybe the people here distrust magic as a whole?

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "I guess. I mean, they're still turning spawn to obsidian."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's a limit to how fast they can do it. And they can only turn buildings into obsidian."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...No? I literally just turned the ground to obsidian. Right now they're only turning buildings into obsidian but they aren't limited by that." His tone sounds like he thinks Drizzt is incredibly stupid. He's got his pickaxe out now--it's the same glowing purple as his armor--and is very slowly mining the obsidian again.

Permalink Mark Unread

"If they can turn people into obsidian I would be more concerned."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. Oh. Yeah, uh, that would be bad." Kind of cool, though. "...Do you know how to do that?" He's looking at Drizzt with renewed interest.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I did not study the wizarding arts, unfortunately."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. Well, that's alright, I can't either, so." He does sound kind of disappointed.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's understandable, even if he himself does not regret being a skilled fighter or not spending so much time in the Academy. "I should not interrupt you further, unless there is something I can help with." Please have something to help with, this is his first conversation in months with someone who can talk.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I should probably let you gear up, honestly. Let me know if you get any info?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will keep my eyes open."

Permalink Mark Unread

Then Mapicc will wander off.

Mapicc whispers to roshambogames: vc

Permalink Mark Unread

"What happened--"

Permalink Mark Unread

"New person joined. I thought I'd talk to them and get them on the investigation before Poafa or Subz could."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's so risky-- what happened?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was fine, I played it off. He wanted to help keep watch tonight but I played it off, said we'd have Poafa keep watch on his own one night and then with him one night, and then if it only turns to obsidian while Poafa's alone then we know it's him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you know Poafa's schedule, you're sure we can do this?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure. It'll be fine, okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you're sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

Spawn's pretty empty. Depending how long Drizzt stays, he might see one or two people: both also teenage human(?) boys. The first of which is definitely entirely human, with black hair and a sky-themed hoodie; the second of which has brown hair, a long purple-and-black trenchcoat, large, curling horns, green-and-purple heterochromia, and a black pattern on his skin snaking up his left arm and onto his chest and face.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's not actually entirely sure how to get equipped. He hands around spawn, because it's the most inhabitated place he has seen so far (...not that he has really gone anywhere else.)

He keeps his distance from the new arrivals, and watches them. (He's observing the social mores and trying to understand what's going on here. Yes. Definitely.)

Permalink Mark Unread

They're mining one of the obsidian buildings. It's a slow process.

(The horned man has the same glowing purple-black armor as Mapicc had; the definitely-human has a lighter, blue-white armor. Their tools match their armor in color; they're also holding small golden items in their left hands.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Hmm, those golden items are intriguing. They wouldn't be carrying them if they didn't serve a purpose, not when they could mine faster with two hands.

He sneaks a little closer.

Permalink Mark Unread

He gets some wary looks, but he's unarmed and unarmored, and neither of the people seem interested in fighting him. He gets a better view of the items they're holding.

Permalink Mark Unread

Idols? For religious purposes?

They have spotted him, and they haven't immediately attacked him or run away. That's good. He steps into the light. "Greetings."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, hey. You're ... Drizzt, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is I."

Permalink Mark Unread

Wow, this guy is formal. "That's cool. I'm Subz. Do you, uh, want to help, I can lend you a pickaxe, because I'm gonna be honest, you look pretty broke right now."

Permalink Mark Unread

For some reason, only the clothes he had on him made the journey. He'd noticed that, of course, but now is the first time he has properly thought through the implications. He has no swords on his belt and is feeling acutely naked. (He is not going to pat his pockets for Guenhwyvar's statuette with people watching, but-- he doubts she came with him.)

"I am, unfortunately, but I would like to help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure." Ender chest, purple shulker box, he's got two backup picks but Drizzt is getting the diamond one. Shulker box safely back in enderchest, he can hand over the pick. "Here you go. Let me know if it gets low on durability. Enjoy mining obsidian."

Permalink Mark Unread

He is getting to do something good for people! He is being assisted in doing this!

...why can he only use one hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

The world doesn't answer him. Neither Subz nor the definitely-human seem bothered or alarmed by anything.

Permalink Mark Unread

He mines in silence for awhile. (Obsidian takes so long to mine.)

... while he has well disposed people here, he should get more information. "Is there a good way for a newcomer to earn money."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We don't really....do....money. You can, uh, go mining for stuff, or trade with villagers."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do villagers trade weapons?"

Permalink Mark Unread

..........How the fuck do you get onto Lifesteal without knowing the answer to that question.

"Uh. Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good to know." Soon, he can be a productive member of society. ...More productive than removing obsidian and taking night watches.

Permalink Mark Unread

…It’s probably not a good idea to give his base location to someone he doesn’t know. On the other hand, almost everyone already knows where his base is, it’s not a secret. And Subz has always been too nice for his own good on this server. “…Look, you can use my base to get geared up, okay? Just to get you on your feet before you get set up. But if you start blowing it up I will kill you, so don’t try anything stupid.”

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods. "I appreciate it, and will repay you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod back. "Thank you, thank you." See, chat, it's an investment

Nether roof portal time! (And then they'll walk for 15 minutes on the nether roof, but Drizzt might have a reaction to the nether before then.)

Permalink Mark Unread

The people here can casually change planes of existence.

The Academy taught about the different lower planes, and this place is... too flat and uninhabited to resemble any of them. Probably this is the astral plane, and no one in his life had ever managed to describe it well.

He stays silent during the trip, but is obviously keeping an eye out for threats.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's pretty normal for Lifesteal, especially if you don't have any stuff; Subz barely even notices, and definitely does not comment. Subz stops at another portal and they can go back through to the overworld.

Permalink Mark Unread

Subz's base: full of large, strangely shaped buildings, a large collection of labeled chests, miscellaneous railroad lines, and a few things which are recognizable as farms (mostly carrots, but also a small amount of wheat, and a strange red plant that is unfamiliar to Drizzt). Some of the things that Drizzt is able to identify as farms are out in the open; others are in small glass buildings, with strange humanoid creatures wandering around inside. There are more of those creatures lined up in other structures--it's hard to tell if they're trapped so that they can't move, but if so, they don't seem particularly upset by it.

(Someone who knows what they look like might also identify: three villager trading halls and villager zombification chambers; a creeper farm; a huge, multilevel automated pumpkin farm; an iron farm; a slime farm; a wood farm; a witch farm. If there are other farms, they're not immediately visible. The storage system isn't automated.)

Permalink Mark Unread

He does not want to make assumptions here. He does not recognise any of these creatures, or what it means for them to be here.

But there's a pit of dread in his chest, where he wants to assume this is fine because he is unarmed and can't solve this.

He looks towards the most humanoid of the creatures, the ones in the booths. "Those are villagers?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yup." Once again, what the fuck is this guy doing on Lifesteal.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, if they are sentient enough to produce goods for trade, they are sentient enough to climb over a lectern if they so choose.

He is going to judge himself later if he finds he is wrong, but this seems to just be a market and agriculture. That's fine.

"Good to know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool. I'll leave you to it. If I come back and my shit's broken, I will be really upset."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will not touch anything unnecessary."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool." Subz will leave him to it for a while, then; he needs to finish mining the obsidian and then grind totems.

Permalink Mark Unread

Drizzt grabs a set of armour, a sword (... why can he only use one hand and why is there only one type of blade, this world is personally cruel to him), a bow, and a shield.

He heads back to join the obsidian mining party.

Permalink Mark Unread

Four people other than Drizzt cycle out mining the obsidian: Mapicc, Subz, the human teenager with the sky-themed hoodie, and a creature unlike anything Drizzt has ever seen--a creature of huge, pure white floating hands, wearing a periwinkle cloak. It's pretty quiet; they finish before nightfall.

Permalink Mark Unread

The floating hands are friendly, at least. He wouldn't have expected someone so magical after the lack of wizards he had found here.

Permalink Mark Unread

The floating hands, other than being floating hands, don't seem to be doing any magic. They seem to be friends with Mapicc? At the very least, they stay near him, and can be heard giggling with him periodically.

If Drizzt talks to them, he'll learn that (a) the floating hands are named Roshambo, or Ro for short (b) he has a very immature sense of humor (c) he is, in fact, friends with Mapicc, and (d) he's the one that named Medusa and is co-leading the investigation with Mapicc. If Drizzt doesn't initiate a conversation, Ro doesn't either, although he does use one of his hands to wave.

Permalink Mark Unread

Drizzt is drawn by the giggling and the presence of one person he does know to initiate a conversation. (He has finally got to say words to people who understand them, and the good times cannot last, but he is grabbing the opportunity with both hands.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Roshambo and Mapicc are definitely friends; every time Roshambo says any variant on "poop", he has to give Mapicc a diamond, and when Mapicc grumbles about wanting to kill Terry for burning down his mansion, Roshambo's the one to talk him down. Both of them, individually, make a deez nuts joke and then crack themselves up over it while Mapicc calls it vile, bro!

They're friendly with Drizzt, too, although they definitely don't know him as well; when Drizzt and Mapicc run out of food, Roshambo shares some golden carrots with them. Roshambo excitedly tells Drizzt a joke, while Mapicc spends the time complaining that Roshambo has told this joke five times in the past three days, come on bro, it's not even that good. They show off their matching shields--Mapicc's is a red T, Roshambo's is a red A, and they explain it stands for Team Awesome. Ro asks if Drizzt has died yet on Lifesteal, is impressed when the answer is no, and then immediately holds Mapicc back from being Drizzt's first murderer.

Permalink Mark Unread

Their humour is not what he's used to, but it's honestly a major improvement over drow humour.

Also, fighting but not killing someone is how you show friendship. He has friends!

Permalink Mark Unread

...Does he want to fight? If he wants to fight then Mapicc definitely wants to fight. They can set out rules and equal gearsets and everything! Mapicc promises to give the heart back if he wins.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, he is so on.

Permalink Mark Unread

"How all-out do you want this to be, what kit do you want? Standard for the server in terms of real fights is nether pot but I don't think I've got two full inventories of potions to spare, and we'd have to be in diamond at the most anyway if we want equal gearsets. I mean, I'd be down to fight you all-out but I don't know if I can make that a fair fight and still have enough to win if I get jumped. Full iron is probably the play, but I dunno if you want cobs, shields, how much food you want..." Mapicc's placed down his ender chest and is setting up a chest next to it; he's fiddling with shulker boxes and his inventory, switching it out for a fight. "Server pearl and gap cap is a stack each right now but I don't actually have a ton of gaps right now, I'm--ooh. I'm actually kind of broke. I should probably fix that soon, huh."

Permalink Mark Unread

At some point he is going to learn the jargon here. "Iron and shields seems the sensible option."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool. --Hey, Ro, how many carrots can you spare--"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Duuuuude. Can you at least get more later--"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I absolutely promise to get more later. It doesn't have to be that many, like, I dunno, 16 each? I'll pay you back a full stack later."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sigh. "Fine." 32 golden carrots in the chest, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Awesome." Where are his iron blocks--oh, there they are. Crafting bench down. In the chest: Two sets of iron armor, iron sword, iron axe. Two shields. 16 cobwebs each, 16 golden carrots each. No pearls, no totems. That seems fair enough. Now time to put his actual stuff away. Time for shuffling yet more shulker boxes around. Inventory management is a pain. But he gets it set, and then he's squaring up for a fight.

Permalink Mark Unread

Drizzt is having to borrow a wooden chest from someone who has ever punched a tree in their life, while sorting out his armour.

Sword and board has never been his style, but he has trained in it. It's going to be exciting seeing how much he remembers.

It's going to be exciting getting to spar with someone. It's been a number of years he doesn't want to count. Sparring isn't the best reason to draw steel, but it's definitely one of the most fun.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mapicc: is, in fact, really good at pvp. There are a few players on the server better or equal to him--Clown, Leo, maybe Subz or Parrot--but not many. He's strong and fast and he knows how to time his crits, when to eat, where to place cobwebs; when he breaks Drizzt's shield, he knows how long he has before it's back up. Drizzt is a good fighter, but he's used to different physics than Mapicc is. The fight is very, very close, but Mapicc's winning.

Permalink Mark Unread

He starts to copy Mapicc, try to figure out what works.

But he's used to fights where stopping to eat would get you killed, where you can actually just be faster than someone.

He's a quick learner, but not that quick.

Permalink Mark Unread

Drizzt respawns a few feet away, on nine hearts rather than ten. He feels a little weaker, and everything in the world feels a little more intense.

(Mapicc’s collecting the stuff off of Drizzt’s body, putting it back in the chest.)

Permalink Mark Unread

This is the first time he's died.

It's also the first time he's got back up again.

He's vibrating out of his skin and he can't tell how much of that was because his heart stopped and how much because that fight was amazing.

Friends!!!

He goes back towards Mapicc with a stupid grin on his face. "Well done."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You too! GGs." Mapicc also looks pretty happy, although he's not grinning quite as much as Drizzt. He does /withdraw 1, and then he drops the extra heart back to Drizzt. "If you ever want to do that again, just let me know. Although we should probably either grind gear or get a practice server set up if we want to do anything more than iron."

Permalink Mark Unread

He picks it up. It's a shining star that absorbs itself into him, and he feels more... settled? Alive? Both, at once.

"It'll be a good incentive to get better gear."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, well, don't waste your best gear on sparring. Never know when a real fight will head your way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll get more than one set, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Mapicc does grin at that. "Now you're talking. One of these days we'll have enough stuff for a full nether pot duel. Super wasteful but it'd be fun. Well, wasteful unless it's real. Hopefully it won't be."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin. "It will not be."

Friends!

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, that's kind of premature. He's definitely not going to say that, though. "Good to hear. --Ro can we kill someone else, let's go kill someone else, who's on that we can kill."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Broooo. Weren't we going to get more golden carrots?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sigh. "Yeah, okay, that's true. Drizzt, you're keeping watch tomorrow, right? And tonight it's just Poafa."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool. I'm gonna go get carrots now, talk tomorrow?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Talk tomorrow."

He has friends, and no one died! ...he died. But he came back, so that's what matters.

The sun is setting, and while he would prefer to be nocturnal, he should match when other people's waking hours, so he should find somewhere to sleep.

Are there any caves nearby?

Permalink Mark Unread

There are some caves around spawn, yeah. Most of them are mined out of valuable resources, but they exist!

As soon as he goes underground, a zombie approaches and starts punching him.

Permalink Mark Unread

The Underdark does not usually have a pronounced undead problem, and hopefully this isn't caused by a lich.

"Apply sword to zombie" if a thing he can do, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

There is definitely an undead problem in these caves. Or possibly a monster problem more generally? There are zombies, skeletons with bows, large aggressive spiders, strange furry green creatures, and very tall black creatures with glowing purple eyes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, he does not love the spiders. Some giant spiders are natural, sure, but many more are summoned by servants of the Spider Queen.

Is this an amount of monsters he can plausibly kill, or is this an amount that would require back up?

Permalink Mark Unread

It's an amount he can plausibly kill--there aren't a lot, and they aren't very strong--but there sort of ... keep being more? Even with that, it's definitely not enough to kill him, and he doesn't really need backup, but it's... not really a safe place to sleep, either.

Permalink Mark Unread

He'll have to warn people-- though they likely already know, seeing how close this is to where the buildings.

He makes a tactical retreat to the surface. He can sleeps in a tree or something. That's fine.

Permalink Mark Unread

Once the sun is down, there are monsters on the surface, too, although they can't reach the tops of trees.

Permalink Mark Unread

... they must be coming from somewhere. Maybe the caves.

At least he can climb up a tree and be safe.

Permalink Mark Unread

When he wakes up, it's day, and the brick-and-quartz building has been replaced with obsidian. No one's at spawn, though Subz and Bacon periodically say things in chat.

There are two signs out front of the new obsidian building:

We may wish for peace,
but that ship has already sailed

Permalink Mark Unread

Hmm, whether this means Poafa is in on it or Poafa is bad at spotting a whole building being replaced is unclear.

Time to start mining the obsidian. Slowly.

Permalink Mark Unread

People start showing up in the late afternoon: Subz (occasionally), Roshambo, Mapicc, and two new people named PlanetLord and Spoke who Drizzt hadn't met yet.

Permalink Mark Unread

When Roshambo shows up, he gathers Drizzt and Mapicc immediately. "It's gotta be the ship next, right? Yesterday they said justice will be served and then they petrified the courthouse, this time they mention a ship, I think there's only one ship at spawn. I want to interview a couple more people, but Poafa's--Poafa's a little sussy wussy, he was up all night looking at the courthouse, dude, there's no way he missed it, right? He's got to be Medusa."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Was he asked to watch the courthouse?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, I'm pretty sure. We can ask--I want to ask a few other people too, while we're around. Spoke said Planet did it but I'm not sure--I mean, maybe he's just being Spoke, but maybe he's trying to deflect suspicions, or maybe Planet actually did do something. And I was thinking we could also ask Rekrap and Subz, we don't know for sure but I don't think they did it so they might have useful information. Spoke is--probably not worth interrogating, to be honest, whether or not he knows anything he won't give us anything helpful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Subz seems trustworthy though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's been helpful, for sure. I don't know if I fully trust anyone other than you--he would have had the obsidian for it, from breaking the prison."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Obsidian farms are easy, though, and mining it manually is--time-consuming but not hard. I mean, we got a lot of obsidian for the prison, doesn't make us guilty. I'm telling you, obsidian isn't actually that hard to get."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess. But he's not definitely innocent, even if he's not a main suspect."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Whatever, man."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm gonna message Rek, see if he wants to come to spawn."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That seems like a wise course of action."

Permalink Mark Unread

Rekrap shows up! They explain what's been happening; Mapicc says he thinks it's Poafa. Rekrap doesn't seem to have much information, but he does think that this is super cool, and he wishes he were more involved in it. He mentions that someone stole 20,000 obsidian from him a while ago; Mapicc admits that it was him, for building the prison, and they all laugh. They mention that Subz mined the whole prison in one night, which Rekrap is suitably impressed by. Planetlord's following them around, and they make a couple jokes about that.

And then Rekrap gives them a lead: Spoke admitted to doing one of the things. It might have been a joke; it's hard to tell, with Spoke. He's definitely not the main person--he doesn't have the time for it. But it could be a team--Parrot's his closest ally; Parrot is already a suspect; it takes two people to run the obsidian farm in the End.

(Planetlord makes a joke in chat about Mapicc and Ro being Medusa, which Rekrap also thinks would be super cool. Ro makes a joke about taking it over, to which Mapicc rolls his eyes and says I'm not putting in that much effort, you can go for it.)

They joke a couple times about jumping Planet, who's still following them, but they don't do it. They decide to interrogate Parrot, and spam a bunch of messages in chat, but he's not at spawn and he's not responding, so that's out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Planetlord, on the other hand, is right here, following them around.

Permalink Mark Unread

"--Basically, Jaron got banned for defacing spawn, and we think he's carrying out his legacy, because we banned Jaron ourselves, and he knows we're cleaning up spawn, so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He has a motive, but there's no evidence."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Except for the evidence of him apparently telling Spoke!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"And this would be easier with at least two people." Putting in the obsidian would take less time than removing it,  but still.

Permalink Mark Unread

<PlanetLord> okay

“Yeah. And Planetlord has a teammate— just one, now, but still—”

Permalink Mark Unread

"..Hello?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"--Heyyy, Planet, how's it going buddy!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Rohsambo puts on a silly voice for the occasion. "Planetlord. We'd like to ask you a couple questions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you guys think it's me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We know it's you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You know it's me? I thought we agreed it wasn't me!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Someone admitted it was you. And they may have started with an S-P-O. K-E. Is here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. Wait, so, what's happening...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We know you did it. We know you're Medsua."

Permalink Mark Unread

Mapicc turns to glare at Roshambo. "You're good cop! I'm bad cop! You have to say 'I don't think it was you, we just have to ask everyone'--I'm firing you as good cop. Drizzt, you're our new good cop."

Permalink Mark Unread

The appropriate answer here is not 'what is a cop?'. "I don't think it was you. We have to ask everyone."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Um. Okayyy..?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Planetlord. It has come to our attention that not only were you deafened in the voice chat on the night of the first petrification while everyone was distracted playing Valorant--"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not this again."

Permalink Mark Unread

"--But also, that you had motive to petrify spawn."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure this is a misunderstanding."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you. I--didn't we do this like two days ago?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tell us or I'm gonna kill you." He hits Planetlord with his sword once; he's not potted, and it's not a crit. (Planetlord doesn't react very strongly, at least not visibly.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wait, tell you what?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tell us you did it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I didn't do it! Nah, this is just an excuse to kill me, bruh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We won't kill you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Drizzt puts his sword on the ground to emphasise that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh shit, free sword! Mapicc grabs it immediately and tucks it into his inventory. He'll give it back later, probably.

Permalink Mark Unread

Roshambo would glare at Mapicc for that if he had eyes, or legible facial expressions, but he doesn't.

"If it's not you, Planetlord, who do you think it is?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Literally anyone else?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Mapicc coughs. "Poafa? Sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's probably Poafa, I'm sorry. Or Parrot? I think it may be No Pants People. Just like, that team, they do a lot of stuff like that--for example, moving the whole server spawn or whatever thing, so they seem dedicated enough to do something like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

... well, at least he wasn't planning to use that sword soon? "Who are the No Pants People?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh right, you're new. Uh, Parrot and Spoke."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And Rekrap. --Hey, why are you wearing pants?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Rekrap pulls out a piece of orange wool. "I have the Pants Pass. It was a whole thing. Um. It--Ever since I joined the No Pants Party, I don't think I've done a single thing with them."

Permalink Mark Unread

Though that could be a lie if the No Pants Party was the one replacing spawn with Obsidian. "Low entry requirements, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess. I mean, I had to speedbridge over the void for a thousand blocks, I dunno if that counts as low entry requirements."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Fair point."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Mapicc> Parrot please answer our calls out to you

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh! You know what? There's gotta be--hold on."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Randomly realizing something? That's interesting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is there a statistic? Obsidian placed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"True!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Is there?"

Permalink Mark Unread

You can tell how much obsidian someone has placed? That would be very useful evidence. "We could compare it to how much was cleared,  too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's gonna be scuffed though, because we built the prison, Rek's built the tower--"

Permalink Mark Unread

"And Pangi's base."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I placed 323 obsidian. That literally proves that it's not me."

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks at Mapicc. That is a pretty good alibi if it's true.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Show us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ooh, that's pretty definitive. --Wait, wait, yeah, send screenshots."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, here."

The screenshot is sent in the same chat people have been using; it shows Planet's statistics page: 552 obsidian broken, 323 placed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Roshambo nods, or--sort of bobs one of his hands to convey an impression of nodding. "Planetlord is clear."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Probably has the least out of anyone. Well, other than Drizzt."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dude, I was genius for that!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We should go talk to the rest of this No Pants Party then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, I've been spamming Parrot, he's not responding."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We could get Spoke on."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We could." Mapicc doesn't sound enthusiastic about the prospect. "Oh, dude, the vault--Parrot might have a lot from the vault--no, Parrot didn't contribute that much to the vault, that was mostly us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A lot of them are going to be scuffed, I think this can only prove innocence."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The vault?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uhhh, there's this obsidian vault by spawn. It's empty right now, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Parrot did a challenge where he put people's pets in it, it was a whole thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which means this sort of thing--" gesture in the direction of the half dismantled obsidian building "-- is in character for him. "

Permalink Mark Unread

"I... guess? Honestly that isn't the main reason it's in character for him, the main reason it's in character for him is everything else."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The obsidian? Making other people work to fix what he did?"

Permalink Mark Unread

.........There is no way to respond to this question honestly that does not cast more suspicion on himself and Mapicc.

"I... guess, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have to go, guys, I'll see you later, goodbye!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm gonna go too, unless you need me for anything? Baconwaffles wanted to do some stuff."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Go for it."

And now it's just Mapicc and Ro and Drizzt.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We could see if we can find Parrot. He can't avoid us indefinitely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He kind of can, though. Ro, do you even know what quadrant his base is in?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you want to search the whole server, be my guest. Personally I'm just gonna wait until he shows up at spawn, he's gonna show up eventually. If we get really desperate we can interview Spoke."

Permalink Mark Unread

He's a good tracker, he's pretty sure he could just go find him, but he can wait.

Permalink Mark Unread

"At least Planetlord is cleared. Unless he photoshopped it. I kinda doubt it, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not that quick. Unless he had one on save in case we asked, that'd be genius."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That would be pretty genius. But-- I don't know, it seemed genuine to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think he expected us enough to prepare it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's true. I feel like-- I think he's cleared. At least for now. We should focus on other people to investigate. I'm genuinely really suspicious of Poafa, actually."

(Subz is now visible in the distance, and walking towards them.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"He did miss a whole building changing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

Subz is Yet Closer.

<ItzSubz_> hi mapic

"What about Subz? Is Subz a suspect at all? He got the obsidian from the prison, but other than that..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We could ask."

"HELLO. I AM RIGHT HERE."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh okay. Crit!"

Mapicc accompanies the word "crit" by jumping and hitting Subz with his sword on the way down.

Permalink Mark Unread

"WHOA whoa whoa-- Can I interrogate you guys? I have some questions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're literally the ones interrogating, bro. You can't just be doing it, I'm sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, no, I also want to be the silly interrogator guy too, what the hell." He jumps and punches Mapicc.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do not crit me!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I punched you, re-laaax. I punched you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Time for Roshambo to step between them. He's doing a silly voice again, which transitions halfway through into an overly dramatic serious voice. "Mister Subz. It appears that after breaking the prison, you acquired stacks upon stacks of obsidian. And that night, the petrification started happening."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wait, really?" He sounds genuinely startled. "That's pretty silly. That is pretty ideal timing. What?" Startled half-laugh.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Subz, this is your chance to confess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It wasn't me, I swear!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you have an alibi?" The drow justice system loves alibis.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, okay, I mined all of the obsidian--" (Mapicc jump-and-punches him; he rolls his eyes.) "I mined all of the obsidian and then I went home and put all of the obsidian in a double chest. And it's still there in that double chest to this day."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would we be able to check this?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I mean, you know where my base is, I showed it to you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"--I was asking for permission."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. Um, yeah, sure, but also I doubt Mapicc or Roshambo care."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's true."

Permalink Mark Unread

??? "It would be evidence for or against."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, yeah, I mean, like... They'd go even if I didn't give permission, soooo."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah. Right."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can you maybe...screenshare, Subz?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You already know where my base is, why do I need to screenshare?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, moron! You're going to screenshare something else, but I can't tell you until right as we're doing it, so you can't fake it or anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think this is going to be decisive unless it's low, but let's check it out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, now press statistics."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're looking for obsidian placed?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"2,000. Huh. That's--quite a bit of obsidian. I don't think it incriminates him, but I don't think it clears him, either."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't even know what I've built with obsidian this season, I'm gonna be honest with you. I've just built a bunch of nether portals, I guess. And it's my building block half the time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Interesting, interesting. I have one final question for you, Subz, do you have any leads for us? Or for anyone. Do you have any suspicions? Where's your head at?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Where's my head at? I mean, yesterday, there was Parrot around and Poafa around, and that's all I know. My suspicions are put in one of those two."

Permalink Mark Unread

Mapicc whispers to roshambogames: say the word and i will SPLASH

"That's kind of the consensus."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's kind of what we're hearing from everybody, bro. Parrot or Poafa. Parrot mainly because he's always up to something and we know he has obby, and then Poafa 'cause he is the only one witnessing nothing happening."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Parrot has also been avoiding us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's true. Although--he is doing something, I don't know if I should say--then again, that could be the perfect alibi. We definitely need to talk to him, I'll message him some more. Poafa also--one or two days before the petrification started, Poafa created a team and invited me and Mapicc to it called the Cleanup Crew. And basically their entire goal is to prevent spawn from being griefed or destroyed or defaced in any way, and that's kind of what the petrification is. It's an alibi that he created himself, just like the stakeout last night. Drizzt, Subz, is there anything else?"

Permalink Mark Unread

...creating a "Clean Up Crew" just before petrification started its incredibly sloppy. "Not on my end."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can I ask you some questions completely unrelated to this in any way?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did you guys steal three double chests of gold nuggets from me? And potentially three shulker boxes that were empty? And potentially build a tower outside of my base to spy on me or something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

...

"You know, steal is a big word."

Mapicc whispers to roshambogames: yes i did all of that

Permalink Mark Unread

Drizzt is just Looking at Roshambo.

Permalink Mark Unread

(To the extent that Roshambo can really be said to look at things, he is looking at Mapicc. Subz is looking back and forth between Ro and Mapicc.)

"It is a big word, that's why I chose it!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"And, um, I personally, I didn't do any of that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You built the tower!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I did not build the tower!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He saw you on top of it, what are you doing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I did build the tower. But! That was, uh, a harmless prank."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was pretty funny. --I would never touch your gold farm, I'm too... Mapicc. I would never. I would literally never."

Halfway through, he pauses to eat a golden apple. It is absolutely not necessary and it is a waste of a golden apple. However: it is funny.

Permalink Mark Unread

?????? "Why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why what? Ro built the tower because it was funny, and I didn't touch the gold farm because I would never touch Subz's gold farm."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I hope you wouldn't."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bro, re-lax!"

Permalink Mark Unread

How has he ended up with divided loyalties in less than a day. How has this happened.

He is going to look calm an me not like he's constantly flicking his gaze between looking at Subz and Mapicc and Ro.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What about the fifteen shulker boxes?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I actually did not touch that. Did you, Ro?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dude. I did not touch that. Although, um..."

Mapicc whispers to roshambogames: you absolutely did huh

"WHAT are you talking about-- Subz. I know who did it."

(The silly voice is back at the end.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pangi."

Permalink Mark Unread

Roshambo cracks up. "You're just lying, man!"

Mapicc starts laughing too, a little.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I just want him to not like Pangi. I hate Pangi." (They're still both laughing.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can I say who did it, Mapicc?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't care."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mapicc did it. BUT! To be fair, to be fair, before you jump to conclusions, man--didn't you say we could take what we wanted?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Why is everyone stealing?

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, you did say that, actually. You said, I'm so rich, I have money falling out of my armpits, literally take whatever you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do not recall this statement, what are you talking about." (Subz is also laughing a little.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"You said that! You said that! Do you not remember this? Wow."

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is cap, you guys are lying to my face right now. You guys are being girlboss gaslight gatekeepers right now."

Permalink Mark Unread

Once again with the strings of words! At least Subz does not seem that upset? (Note to self: find out what a shulker is, and acquire replacements for Subz.)

"I'm sure we can work something out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you Drizzt, but I don't--I don't really think that should be on you, I'm gonna be honest, I don't really think you had anything to do with this. Mapicc and Ro, on the other hand."

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, yes, but they are his allies. He has some responsibility for their actions. For now, at least.

He nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Subz, we never took your stuff. Also, gaslighting does not exist." It's said in a serious tone, but a serious tone that is definitely very close to laughing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, he's not getting anywhere with this. Not unless he wants to start a fight, and he is supposed to be a pacifist. Might as well just play into it. He can talk to Drizzt later, maybe, but he meant what he said--this really isn't Drizzt's fault. Easier for everyone if he just deescalates.

"Wait, really? Oh, you're right. I'm sorry guys. My bad."

Permalink Mark Unread

Mapicc whispers to roshambogames: we are doing it rn!
Mapicc whispers to roshambogames: say bananas and i will splash

Silly voice is once again back. "Was there anything else, Mister Subz?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, that's all I really had to say, and clearly you guys didn't have anything to do with that, luckily, so. That's okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you for your time, Mister Subz."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, thank you for your time as well, I'm gonna head out now, you guys have fun. Bye."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Goodbye."

Permalink Mark Unread

Roshambo silly voice: it is still happening. "Is there anyone else we need to interrogate?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Parrot, if he would goddamn answer us."

Permalink Mark Unread

He is going to talk about the theft later, when he has more information. There's likely a reason, and he hopes for Mapicc and Ro's sakes it's a good one.

"Is there any way we may be able to draw him out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right now? Probably nooot, just from my knowledge of what he's doing. Offering totems might work but I don't actually have a ton going spare. Honestly, I think he'll probably show up for an interview in, like, a couple days max."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Waiting a few days will be frustrating," he is getting very intimate knowledge of exactly how long it takes to mine obsidian "but this isn't so urgent."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeahhhh. I'll keep messaging Parrot. We could talk to Poafa, see what the plan for tonight is."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods. "And I can see if he follows through on what he says."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. He shouuuuld be around fairly soon, we've got pretty similar schedules."

Permalink Mark Unread

Poafa: is indeed around fairly soon.

He suggests that he take a schematic of the boat and then burn it down, so that he can rebuild it tomorrow or in the future but whoever Medusa is won't be able to turn it to obsidian; Roshambo is particularly reluctant, but eventually everyone (Mapicc, Roshambo, Planetlord, and Subz) agrees. At one point he shows a screenshot his obsidian placed count to Planet and Mapicc, who both confirm that it's in the low hundreds--not even close to enough to be Medusa. He agrees to do another 10-hour overnight watch, just in case. He joins in with joking when everyone else is, but when talking about Medusa, he's probably the most audibly tired and frustrated of everyone.

Permalink Mark Unread

It seems less likely to be Poafa, considering the low obsidian count, though he's reserving judgement. Parrot is looking more likely.

(Or maybe Subz.)

He's still going to join him on watch tonight.

Permalink Mark Unread

10 hours later, the sun is rising, the boat has not reappeared, nothing has turned to obsidian, and Medusa--whoever they are--has not shown their face. Nothing particularly suspicious happened overnight. Poafa says goodbye to Drizzt and leaves spawn to head back to his base.

(Elsewhere, Mapicc and Roshambo debate the merits of using an invis to check if Drizzt is still watching spawn. The situation, they both agree, is very bad. They eventually agree to risk it--cover story if anyone sees particles is that they wanted to check if Poafa returned to spawn in secret or if anyone else was at spawn who might be suspicious. Roshambo heads, invisibly, an inventory full of potions, towards spawn, to see if Drizzt is still keeping his watch or if he abandoned it once Poafa left.)

Permalink Mark Unread

While he technically does have better things to do-- pay back Subz, get actual equipment, get shelter that isn't a tree, investigate the ?lich? problem-- patrolling is something he's good at.

He's still at spawn.

Permalink Mark Unread

ShitOkay. Roshambo knows when he's beat; assuming Drizzt doesn't notice anything, he heads back to Mapicc.

On the one hand, this was always sort of the plan; if Medusa only works when Poafa's standing guard, this doesn't exactly make Poafa look innocent.

On the other hand, if Drizzt starts doing this more often, they won't be able to do this at all.

And on the third hand, which Roshambo also has, Poafa has already been mostly-cleared by his obsidian count. He and Mapicc have half a plan there, but it's... not a solid one, not something they can pull off yet, and so making Poafa look marginally more suspicious... doesn't actually do much, at this moment. People could so easily start suspecting. According to Mapicc, Poafa already has, and now he's spent the night with Drizzt.

Permalink Mark Unread

Drizzt leaves mid morning to Be more comfortable in the dark be productive and mine.

Permalink Mark Unread

Team Awesome don't know when Drizzt leaves, and besides, Mapicc wasn't lying about having the same schedule as Poafa; they don't return to spawn until the afternoon, and exclaim happily over the fact that the boat hasn't been turned to obsidian.

Permalink Mark Unread

Also in the afternoon: someone who Drizzt hasn't met is building a new building. It is distinctly not obsidian: it's red with white and blue accents and a checkerboard floor. The person building it also builds a large floating sign pointing to it, reading IHOB ⬇️.

Permalink Mark Unread

Drizzt returns to spawn late afternoon on his own two feet,  as opposed to dying, a reasonable amount of iron and coal richer.

It's nice to see a new, non-obsidian building.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mapicc waves to him. "Hey. How was the watch?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nothing suspicious happened."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's good. --Parrot finally got back to us, he can only do a call but you can join for that if you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It  would be good to hear from him."

Permalink Mark Unread

Then the three of them--Mapicc, Drizzt, and Ro--can call Parrot.

"Hello?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Parrot," Roshambo says in his silly voice. "Have you heard of someone named Medusa."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...No? Other than that you think it's related to me somehow."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Have you been to spawn recently."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No.....?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A player has been changing buildings at spawn to obsidian and we're trying to catch them. You've been online on most of the nights that this has happened, you don't have any alibi, and you've been avoiding us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Roshambo, bro, I expect this from Mapicc, but you know what I've been doing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wasn't sure if you wanted me to share. You could have had help. You could be lying. You're kind of known for lying, actually. Parrot, listen, tell me this isn't the sort of thing the NPPP would do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bro. I am on one heart. I am huddling in the side of a hill so I don't get banned."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You don't need hearts to build things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You need hearts to not die while building things. If I get hit by a mob once, if I take a bit too much fall damage, I am banned. I have genuinely not come to spawn once since I started this challenge."

Permalink Mark Unread

To Mapicc: "We could ask around if anyone had seen him recently."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, probably a good idea. I mean, he could just be lying."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I haven't seen him, and I did know he was doing something like this, so that much checks out. It's a good cover if he's lying, though. All he has to do to keep his cover going is not come to spawn when anyone else is there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And not get spotted approaching it either."

Permalink Mark Unread

"True."

To Parrot:

"How do we know you're not lying?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, you don't. I could screenshare but you have no way of knowing if I just withdrew hearts during this conversation. You could ask Spoke but he's teamed with me. But any evidence you find will support my story, because I'm telling the truth."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is there any other evidence you have?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Genuinely, I am not sure what I could give you guys. I have been in a hole for so many days."

Permalink Mark Unread

Mapicc giggles. "A hole, you say. Sorry, sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

Roshambo giggles also. "That's vile, bro." Back to serious voice: "Parrot, who do you think it was? Do you have any ideas?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, not...really? Like I said, I haven't been at spawn."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright, bro." To Roshambo and Drizzt: "Do you have any other questions?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, Parrot, thank you for your time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Any time, bro."

The call ends.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't like his story, it's impossible to prove."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeahhhhhh. It's--yeahhhh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, both he and Poafa are both suspects."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. It--they both have cover stories. But they're-- mm. Mm! I do not trust either of them. And last night--I know Poafa's obsidian count was low, but. When it was just him standing watch, it sure did get petrified. And when you were with him, it didn't. Could have been because you destroyed the ship, I guess, but they would've at least had to come to spawn to find that out, and neither of you saw Parrot."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Spawn was. Very quiet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Could be more than one person working together--even if Poafa isn't the one placing obsidian he could still be covering for them, feeding them information. He still feels sus to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would Parrot and Poafa work together?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Honestly? No idea. They're not enemies, but they haven't worked together in the past. It's not unthinkable but it wouldn't be my first guess for either of them, except for... everything else right now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mhhm."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We should probably figure out the plan for tonight--I dunno if anyone's around to keep watch. I still can't do it, sorry, I've got a lot of off-server stuff this week. Poafa's definitely the most motivated to do it, but has the obvious problem of still being a suspect. ...Could also just see what they do next, since the boat is gone."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would be happy to take watch again."

Permalink Mark Unread

On the one hand, this is extremely bad. Possibly the worst thing that's happened since Planetlord brought up checking statistics. Mapicc is definitely going to get mad at him later. On the other hand, if they hadn't asked, that would... also not look great for them.

"Are you good with doing that all night? I mean, you did that last night too, you haven't slept. We could ask Planet or someone."

Permalink Mark Unread

Who really needs a sleep schedule, actually. "I can sleep a bit before night falls. It's no trouble."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hm. People will definitely be around before nighttime. Morning would be better, but if he says that and then it's petrified in the morning--

"Okay. I just don't know how sustainable that will be if we have to keep doing this. We can make a schedule, get Subz and Planet in on it. Maybe Poafa."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Subz seems the most trustworthy of all those people, but I'm not sure he would agree."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am not doing an allnighter for this, by the way. I'll make the group chat, that's it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's fair enough." Other people need to sleep, he does not.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mapicc does, indeed, make the group chat: the three of them, as well as Poafa, Subz, and Planetlord. Poafa is included on the basis that Poafa has in fact already done several watches and it's probably good to know when specifically he's standing watch, either on his own or with someone else. Other people can get added in the future if they're interested and at all trustworthy.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a good system, even if he is quite happy to become nocturnal and take arbitrary watches.

Permalink Mark Unread

(And now Team Awesome knows when the watches end. Unfortunately, both Mapicc and Roshambo have school, so it'll be hard to pull off, and it'll be suspicious that whoever is doing Medusa knows when the watches happen. But it'll be possible. ...Hopefully.)

There's still a while left before the watches start, though; Drizzt and Mapicc and Roshambo can hang out for a while.

Permalink Mark Unread

Drizzt is trying to both hang out and be productive-- that is, sort the random things he has picked up so he isn't carrying around piles of useless things. (There's a pile of flowers and rotten flesg around his feet.)

And he finds an onyx-black egg.

"Do you recognise this?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Mapicc's eyes go wide real fast; Roshambo takes a step back.

"Dude, where the fuck did you get that-- do not let Parrot see you with it. Honestly, we probably shouldn't even be doing this anywhere near spawn. Put that away, let's go a thousand blocks out and try it out there."

Permalink Mark Unread

Mapicc picks a direction and starts walking.

"Is it named anything, does it have any NBT data...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Drizzt is following. Apparently it's important that the egg is kept secret?

"How would I check the data?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think you can see what it is without op, but you should be able to see if it has it--it'll show up as, like, a note that it's got NBT tags when you look at it in your inventory."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It does appear to... have those? And a garbled name."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, good to know."

Permalink Mark Unread

It would have been faster to do this in the nether but they've already gone far enough out that there aren't any portals nearby. Oh well.

"Should we try and make it into a spawner or something? If it's only the one, it's going to be really embarrassing if we spawn it and then whatever it is just, like, dies."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Spawners don't keep NBT data."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Damn. Well, good to know."

They keep traveling for a while before Mapicc signals for them to stop and starts digging down. He digs out a room. (He starts recording. Whatever this is, he'll want footage later.)

"Okay. You can put it down now," he says, and holds his breath.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, "47 75 65 6E 68 77 79 76 61 72," let's see what you are.  He puts the egg down, and it doesn't break--

Permalink Mark Unread
Permalink Mark Unread

"Guenhwyvar!" When he-- died, he thought he'd left her behind forever but she's here--!

Permalink Mark Unread

Drizzt gets lovingly rugby tackled by a cat nearly as tall as he is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mapicc's sword is out in an instant, but when Drizzt seems to be happy and not upset or injured, he reluctantly puts it away. He double checks his inventory anyway--he's got a full fight kit, just in case--not that it would matter much against something spawned-in.

"So...this is...good?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's excellent."

Drizzt is now very, very pinned.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is so not vanilla." Roshambo stifles a laugh. "Even for a spawn egg. Parrot cannot find out about this."

Permalink Mark Unread

Drizzt gives him a look that implies that if Parrot finding out could harm Guenhwyvar, Parrot is not going to find out. Or may be made to forget. Violently.

The affect is somewhat spoiled by the fact he is stuck under a cat making the exact same expression.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wait, so-- you know the cat, do you have any idea now how you might have ended up with a spawn egg for it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"In my-- original world, she was tied to a statue I kept with me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And so here that's a spawn egg. Makes sense, I guess. Could the statue do anything other than summoning her?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not that I ever found."

Permalink Mark Unread

"....Can I pet her?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If she let's you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Guenhwyvar stands up and sits pointedly next to Roshambo.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Very tentative pat, with one of the many hands?

Permalink Mark Unread

Guenhwyvar leans into the hand.

Pettings are very good.

Permalink Mark Unread

!!!!!!! This is very good. Guenhwyvar can get so many pets. Roshambo's entire attention, for the moment, is studiously devoted to optimizing the petting. Many variables to test. This is one of the benefits of being many hands of various sizes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hmm. This is a barely adequate number of hands. Barely.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sooooo," Mapicc says, after a bit of silence. "Is the cat, like, useful, or just a pet? --No hate either way, if--Guenhwyvar?--is a pet I'll help protect it, the three of you are all quite frankly adorable, I'm just wondering."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's a good hunter, and has saved my life many times."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool cool, good to know. ...How strong is she? Stronger or weaker than a person?"

Probably stronger than most mobs, if she's a reliable hunter? Unless she's only reliable at killing passive mobs, but she's big enough and unfamiliar enough that Mapicc doesn't want to bet on that. She doesn't look like she has any ridiculous potion effects. But she also doesn't look like any mob Mapicc knows--she's bigger than a cat or an ocelot, by quite a bit--and if she's actually modded or something like that then who even knows what she might be able to do. She could be weak and only good at hunting fish. She also might have ridiculous strength or a thousand hearts or both or something else entirely. Roshambo can cuddle up to her if he wants, but Mapicc's keeping his distance until he knows more about what's going on with her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's as capable as a trained fighter."

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, that gets Mapicc's interest. "How trained? She doesn't need gear, does she need potions? Wait, she doesn't need gear, if the fight's about equal then surely she could just win by surviving until their armor breaks. I can see how she'd do a fight that was mostly axe or sword pvp, but what about explosions, no crystals on lifesteal but carts are fine and I don't know how you'd counter that without a shield and she can't use a flame bow. Keeping the low ground, I guess, or water, but it's gotta be harder. Actually, wait, she can't counter bows at all, surely the strat would be to bowspam from a distance. Can she use pearls? Does she respawn? Can we fight, if she can't respawn I promise I won't kill her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I haven't seen her handle potions or explosions, but I can't see why she couldn't? On my world,  she could escape to her home plane if she was injured. I'm not sure what would happen if she died on my world, let alone here. But if you want to see her in action, that can be arranged."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes please, that'd be awesome."

(A few of Roshambo's hands have stopped petting Guenhwyvar to face Mapicc, twitching a bit in the air in the way that Mapicc knows is amused-fond.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Guenhwyvar?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Guenhwyvar has gone into a crouch, ready to spring.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mapicc's switching between holding his sword and holding strength pots in his main hand; in his offhand he's got a totem. He tries to move as unpredictably as he can in a small space.

"Can I fight back or am I just doing pure defense?"

Ideally he'd change his kit for the latter, switch out all the strengths for turtle master, slowness, regen. Add more xp, it's gonna suck to get everything back if she breaks his armor. Switch his totem for a shield, maybe, but that much he can do on the fly. Worst case scenario he's pretty confident he can escape; there's no way Guenhwyvar is making it through a one-block gap, she can't take his water, and she can't mine.

Permalink Mark Unread

Drizzt smiles. "Go ahead."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin. "Awesome."

Strength-speed-fire res, on autopilot; he realizes a moment too late that the fire res is also not necessary against Guenhwyvar, he should've replaced it before taking the fight. A mistake to fix next time. He doesn't have carts or rails on him to see how she would react to that but he's got his bow, his tools and armor are all almost fully repaired, and he's got nearly a full fight inventory--potions, cobwebs, golden apples, golden carrots, ender pearls, blocks. He's ready for this.

Permalink Mark Unread

Guenhwyvar leaps.

There isn't cover or anything to climb onto, so she's just going to use momentum and claws.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wow, Mapicc is not used to this hitbox; Guenhwyvar gets some advantage from that. Also from the fact that claws work well on cobwebs, and that she doesn't need to pause to eat or xp like he does.

But Mapicc gets advantage from the setting--a small, bare room--and, again, from the fact that he's used to the physics of this world. He doesn't even need to mine away, which is sort of a shame because he's still curious how she'd respond to that, but also sort of not a shame because he really likes winning. It's a long fight, not like the fight he and Drizzt had in iron, but he's pretty sure he's winning it, even before Guenhwyvar retreats to a corner. He crits her out for another couple seconds before realizing that she's stopped fighting back, at which point he pulls back and starts splashing xp to repair his armor. "GGs," he says, and means it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well done," he says, and it's to both of them, though he is scratching Guen behind the ear, and not doing that to Mapicc.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you." Mapicc's a bit out of breath; there's sweat beading on his brow. He's smiling broadly as he pulls out his enderchest to restock his inventory; he's got almost enough to fully replace what he used, but not quite. "If you ever want to do that again, just let me know. Not right away, though, I need to restock."

Permalink Mark Unread

Drizzt is also smiling. "Guenhwyvar will need to rest too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do we want to stay here or find somewhere else to hide her?" Mapicc fiddles with his settings. And takes a screenshot of the coords while he's at it. "She doesn't show up on pie chart, at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

"In my previous world, I could dismiss her, and summon her every second day."

Permalink Mark Unread

!!!!!!!!!

"Do you think that works here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It would be worth it to try." He hopes that it does work this way here, and that by dismissing her now,  he isn't dooming himself never to see her again. He gives her one last skritch, in case. "Go home."

Permalink Mark Unread

Guenhwyvar bumps his hand with her nose, and dissolves into black mist.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Holy--

And you'll tell us in two days, if you can summon her again?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll come back here and test it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Thumbs up. "Cool, sounds good." Mapicc starts mining a staircase back up to the surface; it'd be faster to make a nether portal, and they are absolutely not lacking in obsidian for one, but if they're going to come back here then it's too big a risk.

Permalink Mark Unread

Drizzt is definitely not leaving any sign that something happened here. if it's that dangerous for people to find out about Guenhwyvar--

Permalink Mark Unread

"This could be huge," Roshambo says, on the walk back. "A renewable source of spawn eggs. For something that can come close to beating Mapicc in netherite."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unless Parrot finds out and slash clears him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It might come back in two days!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or it might not. We don't even know if that works when everything goes normally."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Slash clear?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Gets rid of your inventory."

Permalink Mark Unread

... many times, he has had to grapple with the fact Guenhwyvar is summoned by an object, and is thus relatively easy to kidnap.

He has not had to grapple with the fact his link to her is apparently possible to destroy.

"Parrot cannot find out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's the plan, yeah. He'd probably ban you, too. How'd you do it? I promise I won't snitch. I mean, I've already got enough dirt on you that I could, so it won't hurt either way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The egg was with me the whole time,  I'd just never realised it was unusual."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. Okay. Well, uh, if the egg comes back, put it in an echest or something until you can use it, don't risk dying with it. I can go through how people might react but it's safer for everyone if it just doesn't come up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think an enderchest has become my top priority."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I got you." Mapicc puts down his enderchest, grabs a spare from it, drops the spare to Drizzt, and then mines back the one he's using.

Permalink Mark Unread

"-- That is very kind, thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No problem."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a shame we can't have Guen help openly, she could be good for catching Medusa."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We should start collecting the evidence it's Poafa. And everyone else, but like, let's be honest."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If we get much more I think we should call a trial. Maybe even spawntrap him and ban him if it's conclusive enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A trial would be good." Points for this place having what appears to be a functional justice system?

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Evidence... The creation of the cleanup crew, right before the petrification started. The night he was guard on his own, the courthouse was petrified, but the night you stood guard with him, the ship didn't. I don't know if that's enough for a trial, yet, but we can start collecting it. --We should call ourselves something. Not cleanup crew, since that's Poafa's."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Against Medusa Team?" He is not good at names.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What about Perseus? Since he slayed Medusa, in the myth."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're such a fucking nerd, bro. How long have you been waiting to suggest this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Shut up, bro." (His voice is light; a bit embarrassed, but not angry, and there's a laugh in it, too.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, seriously, how long."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Um. Two days?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Mapicc laughs, not mean-spiritedly. "Okay, bro, we can be Perseus. I'll make a group chat, we can keep a record of the evidence."

The Perseus group chat: Mapicc, Roshambo, Subz, Drizzt.

Permalink Mark Unread

He has friends! He's helping them achieve good things! Guenhwyvar is back!

Today has been very good.

Permalink Mark Unread

Roshambo sends screenshots in the group chat: Poafa making cleanup crew; the night that Poafa kept watch and saw nobody but then the ship was petrified anyway.

Today was--definitely an eventful day. But Guenhwyvar makes it a good one, Ro thinks.

Permalink Mark Unread

Drizzt makes a note that he didn't see Poafa do anything while he was on watch with him, but also nothing got petrified when he was with him.

Permalink Mark Unread

There are people on watch--Drizzt and Planetlord and Poafa--for most of the night. Watch ends in the morning; most people aren't around in the late morning, busy off-server. Usually Mapicc and Roshambo would be, too, but Mapicc says he can skip out on that, this once. Hopefully just once. Mapicc waits an extra half hour from when the watch ends, just in case.

Someone could come to spawn at any moment. Roshambo didn't get a full schematic of the boat, only half of it; they're improvising the rest. Mapicc's working with half the number of hands as usual. Well, less than half, technically. He's got invis on him, but it would be so, so easy for someone to see him before he sees them. He keeps checking tab to see if anyone's second layer is on, but there are so many people without second layers.

He gets the boat built--no witnesses, as far as he can tell--and then he gets out of there.

Permalink Mark Unread

That day, in server-wide chat, there are a few people who Drizzt recognizes--Planetlord, ItzSubz_, Poafa, Mapicc--but there are also three new people who Drizzt doesn't recognize--PrinceZam, ashswagg, and Pangi. PrinceZam and Ashswag seem to be asking around about Medusa; they even reference "good cop" and "bad cop" when talking to Subz the same way Mapicc did. Poafa says he has a ten hour recording of nothing happening last night, and that he still has no clue who Medusa is.

In the early afternoon, PrinceZam is added to the Perseus group chat.

By the time Drizzt makes it to spawn in the evening, the obsidian boat is half-destroyed, and the people still at spawn are mostly people he recognizes: Subz, Mapicc, Roshambo. But there's someone new there with them. They stop what they're doing to wave awkwardly.

Permalink Mark Unread

After the watch, Drizzt split his time between sleeping, resource gathering, and digging a dirt hole to better sleep in.

It's not a surprise to find another obsidian building si spawn, but it is a disappointment.

Drizzt will go up to help destroy the boat, and be friendly in the direction of the new person.

Permalink Mark Unread

The signs on the boat:

Nice try, but I can’t let you hog all the fun.
Petrification cannot be stopped.

"We're thinking of setting a skulk trap up at the pig statue," Mapicc explains to Drizzt. "And then whoever sets that off--either if they die or get the Postmortal achievement--well, it'll be evidence."

(The new person is shy; he talks animatedly with Mapicc and Roshambo at times, but then he'll glance at Drizzt and go quiet or even try to sort of hide behind the people he knows. He hasn't introduced himself.)

Permalink Mark Unread

He'd gotten used to being unintimidating here, but alas, it could not last.

He can at least hope introducing himself could help. "I am Drizzt."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi! I'm PrinceZam."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm glad to have your help clearing this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh! Um, thank you. I tried to fix up spawn a bit too, but, um, basically all my builds are gone now, and my teammates are doing all the dectective-ing, so. Um. Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're supposed to say 'Nice to meet you, Drizzt'."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh! Um. Sorryyyyy. Nice to meet you, Drizzt."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nice to meet you, too." Oh no, he feels bad. "Would you like help with your buildings?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Um. Maybe? I mean, I don't have a schematic of them, and, um, they got turned to obsidian, and now they're gone, sooo. Maybe I'll rebuild them eventually but right now, like, there's still Medusa to deal with, they're just going to keep going until we find them, and also just repairing spawn, it's kind of really bad right now? I guess spawn is always really bad on Lifesteal but still. I had to terraform a whole chunk of shoreline this morning. Well, I didn't have to, but no one else was going to, because no one else on this server cares about spawn looking good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"When Medusa is defeated, I will be happy to help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. That's--nice. Thank you?"

It probably won't happen. Most people forget any promises about the future they have made, especially ones that far into the future. But that's mean to say and the thought is nice. Then again, they've already mostly figured out that it's Poafa. So maybe Medusa will be defeated soon after all.

"Honestly I'm saddest about the ship, it added so much character to spawn. At least Poafa's got a schematic of that one. Even if he is probably Medusa, maybe he'll let us use it after? If we don't ban him. We might ban him. I mean, I kind of want to ban him, I'm really mad at him, but also it would be nice to get the schematic. I don't know. I wish I was better with redstone, I'm kind of useless with the skulk trap. I was thinking about maybe going netherite mining later since I'm just in diamond but it looks like you're in the same boat so at least I'm not the only one. I really need to grind, though, I'm low on, um" (don't tell him you're on five hearts) "kind of everything, I haven't been around much since the rules change, I need to get netherite and better potions and stuff."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you want company for mining, I can offer that too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's up to you, I don't--you can do whatever you want, you don't have to help me. But if you want to you can come, I don't mean to, like, exclude you or anything. I'm just rambling, sorry." Why is he so bad at talking to people. Why is he so bad at shutting up once he's started. Whyyyyyyyy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Luckily for Zam, he still isn't used to this 'people willingly talking to him' thing. "It would be good if I came along, because I do not know how to do it, and should learn from someone who does. But I would not want to lean too much on your hospitality."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh! Yeah, okay, I can help. I can do that." He has not screwed this up permanently! This is awesome! "--Mapicc, Drizzt and I are going netherite mining. Call if you need us?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, little bro." Wave.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zam crafts a bunch of beds; he drops almost an inventory's full to Drizzt. "This is for, uh, the netherite mining--it might be easier for me to just show you? Um, be careful with them when we go through the portal, if you bedbomb me then Mapicc will just kill you. Probably."

And time to head towards a portal. It looks the same as the other portal that Drizzt went through, but this one leads somewhere else: instead of a blank expanse as far as the eye can see, it's some manmade stone-tile tunnels in poor repair, through a strange red-and-lava landscape.

Permalink Mark Unread

This seems worryingly Abyss-like. Or Hell-like. It's hard to tell the difference when you can't see any fiends and can just see lava and... whatever this rock is.

He would... rather not be in any of the lower planes. "Is this Hell?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sort of, I guess? You could call it that? It's, um, mostly called the Nether, but it's sort of like hell, I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-- Are there devils?" Should they even be here?

Permalink Mark Unread

"No? Um, there are pigmen and ghasts."

Permalink Mark Unread

Those don't sound like fiends, so this is probably fine.

He nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zam's netherite mine is couple hundred blocks out; spawn is pretty mined out. But it's not that far.

And once they get there, Zam can demonstrate mining a one-block tunnel at head height, placing a bed as far away as he can reach, and then-- boom!

There's fire in the newly-cratered room. There's also a single block floating in the middle, of a sort of dark brown metallic color; Zam gasps and bridges over to mine it. "I'm so good at this! Wow! I've never been good at bed mining, I'm really happy. I guess it's fate."

Permalink Mark Unread

Beds are explosive. That's... good to know. "That's netherite?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ummmm yeah! Or well technically it's ancient debris but you use that to make netherite."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, that's quick progress then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah!" He walks a bit more, breaking a line along the top of the hallway as he goes. At a seemingly arbitrary spot he stops and repeats the placement of the bed and the explosion; the metallic brown isn't visible this time, although there's a mix of black and gray rocks in with the red. He doesn't react, just keeps walking. "Ummmm I've got extra wool and wood, you can take half of it and do some mining for yourself? Oh, and, um, it's better to mine along chunk borders."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you, I appreciate it." He makes a mental note to pay Zam back for the wool and wood, and starts mining in the opposite direction. (And mostly not blowing himself up.)

Permalink Mark Unread

They can mine for a while. And then, after about an hour:

Poafa has reached the goal [Postmortal]

Permalink Mark Unread

Zam shrieks a little and runs back to Drizzt. "This is proof, right? This is proof! Oh my goodness--wait, Drizzt, you weren't even there earlier, you don't know what Mapicc and Ash and I talked about--I'll have him send it in group chat later--we caught him! We caught him!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That was the trap going off? We should get to spawn quickly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, probably. It could be something else. You're right, we should go check." Running back to spawn!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

Running back to spawn!

<PlanetLord> OH
<PlanetLord> DID IT
<baconnwaffles0> LAMOOOOOOOOO
<baconnwaffles0> bro
<baconnwaffles0> poafa is fr medusa
<Poafa> brotha who trapped the medusa
<Poafa> *trappe dthe pig
<PlanetLord> NOOo
<Mapicc> NAHHHHHHH BRO JUST ADMITTED IT
<PlanetLord> jaron will be crying
<ItzSubz_> what happened
<Poafa> someone had a skulk sensor trap at jarons pig
<baconnwaffles0> bro who would do that
<ItzSubz_> wtf
<Poafa> with a lot of TNT
<ItzSubz_> what did jarons pig do D:
<Poafa> i just needed dirt man

At spawn, the pig is mostly blown up; its face is intact but its body is entirely gone.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, somebody was interacting with the pig statue.

Is anybody else at spawn?

Permalink Mark Unread

Poafa is, and PlanetLord! And now Drizzt and Zam. Mapicc and Roshambo step out of a portal not long after.

Permalink Mark Unread

Drizzt tries to put himself on the opposite side of Poafa compared to Zam, so it's harder for him to run.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mapicc and Roshambo don't look like they're aiming for a fight, at least not right now; their body language is relaxed, and they're not holding potions. Mapicc isn't even holding a sword. They walk over to the crater and lean over.

"That is one deep hole."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What happened, bro?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was going to the pig because it had a lot of dirt in the chests? And then a skulk sensor went off and then just, a fuckton of TNT."

Permalink Mark Unread

To Mapicc: "Was there dirt in the chests?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I dunno? Probably. I'd ask Bacon or Planet, they were Jaron's teammates."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, there was." And he told Poafa about it. But Drizzt doesn't need to know that.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Was there anybody else at spawn when Poafa died." Medusa had so far been avoiding witnesses.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just me. I think it was just me, anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, not an alibi."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dude, I'm here getting dirt so I can terraform spawn since all the builds are gone and it's leaving, like, weird flat patches. I know you did a lot of mining them too, and you stood guard, okay, but you and I have literally done most of the work of fixing spawn."

Permalink Mark Unread

Mapicc whispers to Drizzt: stop
Mapicc whispers to Drizzt: stop
Mapicc whispers to Drizzt: stop
Mapicc whispers to Drizzt: stop

Permalink Mark Unread

Drizzt is very capable of shutting up when instructed.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Who do you think it was?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Honestly? No idea. Probably someone else who's against Medusa, since it's where the next petrification was going to be."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Makes sense. D'you need help with anything?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nah, I think I'm good. Uh, unless you know where to get dirt?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Ender chest down, terraform box out. "I've just been, like, going a bit away, and then taking a layer or two of dirt under the surface layer? You can take what you want from here, I did some terraforming this morning, spawn is kind of awful right now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks. Hopefully Medusa gets caught soon."

Permalink Mark Unread

Meaningful look between everyone here that isn't Poafa.

"Yeah," Mapicc says. "Hopefully. I'll leave you to it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Does Zam look like he's heading back to the Nether?

Permalink Mark Unread

He is; Mapicc and Roshambo are following him, this time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Drizzt is coming along then!

Permalink Mark Unread

As soon as they're in the nether Mapicc's body language changes, becomes--less casual, maybe? (Roshambo's hard to read due to his lack of face, as always; Zam is the same balance of cheerful and anxious as seems usual for him.)

"Okay. I think we have enough evidence to do a trial tomorrow, which is good. I really hope Drizzt didn't tip him off, if he suspects something it would be so easy for him to just set his spawn somewhere else."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think it'll probably be fine. ...I guess it might not be fine. Oh fuck, what if it's not fine? What if we messed it up forever?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We did not mess it up forever."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He already knew we suspected him, if he was going to change his spawn he would have. We can find him, in either case."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did he? I've been pretty careful about not telling him. Nevermind, doesn't matter. We'll find him. Tomorrow afternoon we can have the trial. Oh, did Zam tell you what we found this morning?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What did you find?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, so Poafa sent Ash a screenshot this morning of his obsidian count where he's got 250 obsidian placed. But get this, it's lower than when he showed it to us the other day--Ro has a screenshot where I confirmed seeing his obsidian count at 358. It went down. Bro definitely faked it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course." He hates that his suspicions were right, but at least they have a culprit.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Plus the ship got rebuilt according to the schematic, and he's the only one who had it. It's pretty much guaranteed him at this point. Hopefully after the trial we won't have to worry about this anymore. D'you guys want company netherite mining or do you have it under control?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Drizzt looks to Zam.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ummmmmmm I don't know. Whatever you want is fine?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wow you two are bad at this. I'll stay and help. Ro, can you grind totems for a bit?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can do that."

Permalink Mark Unread

Mapicc leaves after about an hour; Zam stays longer but nonetheless leaves after a while. Perseus group chat fills up: the screenshot of Poafa's obsidian count as sent to Ashswag, compared to Mapicc mentioning his count the day prior; screenshots of Poafa getting the Postmortal achievement; screenshots comparing Poafa's build style to the tentacles (this one's a bit of a stretch, but they look through them all anyway); screenshots of the rebuilt ship. Mapicc doesn't have a screenshot but he also says that he didn't see Poafa off-server like he usually does on the day that the ship was built. They decide to add Planet to Perseus--he's not that sus at this point, not now that they basically know who it is.

They'll all be around tomorrow evening for the trial. Roshambo's in charge of presenting the evidence and (hopefully) convincing the server to kill Poafa; whoever's around will set up a spawn trap in advance, and then Zam's in charge of waiting at Poafa's spawn so that he can be banned off. Mapicc will come to the trial but have a stasis set at Poafa's base that Zam can pull. Planet, Subz, and Drizzt can be in the audience or do whatever else they want to do unless someone needs last-minute help, but Mapicc shares Poafa's base coords (around 100, 8000) for reference, so anyone can get there quickly if things go bad.

In the 'who's keeping watch' group chat, Planet volunteers to take the bulk of night watch, although he's a little dubious about how much it's helping given that last night they had people watching for 12 hours and then Medusa did it during the day as soon as watch ended.

(Planet's right to be dubious; not long after the watch ends, the half-blown up pig remains turn to obsidian.)

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a little surprising Poafa decided to try and complete petrifying the pig, but he's seen people blinded by their goals before.

He joins the audience for the trial.

Permalink Mark Unread

There are a lot of people in the audience! Well, a lot for here, anyway, not a lot in any objective sense-- there's Mapicc and PlanetLord and Spoke and Baconwaffles and Rekrap and Poafa and three new people, Terrain (a humanoid with a distinctly strange face) and Mr. Cube (whose head is, in fact, a multicolored cube) and Vitalasy (a cloaked being whose face is obscured but whose eyes glow, with fox ears and tail poking out from under the cloak). People are bad at staying in their seats; they run around almost constantly, no matter how much Roshambo tries to convince them to stay still in their seats for just a few minutes.

Roshambo lays out the evidence. The first piece of evidence: the formation of the cleanup crew. The second piece of evidence: the first watch, where Poafa didn't see anyone but it was still petrified the next day. The third piece of evidence: the boat, rebuilt according to the schematic, which Poafa and no one else has. (Poafa disputes this, saying that it's not actually built according to the schematic; Roshambo amends his sentence, saying that it's close.) The fourth piece of evidence: Mapicc, Roshambo, PlanetLord, and Poafa all have off-server commitments during the day on most days; at the most recent petrification, the boat was rebuilt during that time, but Poafa didn't show up to his off-server commitments. (Poafa confirms this; he was sick.) The fifth piece of evidence: Poafa setting off the skulk trap at the pig. For the sixth piece of evidence, Roshambo invites Planetlord to take the stage; Planetlord gives an account of Poafa freezing up and panicking this morning when Planetlord gave him information that made the most recent clue not make much sense. It's weaker evidence but it's still suggestive. Ditto the sixth piece of evidence, which is a comparison of Poafa's build style with the strange tentacle-like growths that extend from the petrified builds.

The seventh piece of evidence is their main one: the obsidian count discrepancy, from 358 down to 250.

Poafa wants to present counterpoints; Roshambo cedes the stage to him.

Poafa says that he can screenshare right now; it's 253 now, up by three over the past day, which isn't enough to build the boat. He's pretty sure he never claimed to have more than that? But he can't prove that. The reason he created the cleanup crew is because even before Medusa, spawn was awful--there was a giant obsidian prison! there were pigs and skulk everywhere! He can show the recordings of when he stood watch for ten hours and nothing happened. (Mapicc points out that he could just turn off the recording before petrifying things.) He has personally mined 7,000 obsidian. He mined most of the courthouse, most of the pig, most of the boat. (Roshambo points out that this is a great way, if he was Medusa, to never run out of obsidian.) He starts dropping stacks of obsidian as an illustration. He is insulted and upset that he's spent the most time out of anyone here other than maybe Drizzt on cleaning this up and everyone thinks he did it. (Vitalasy tries to drop an anvil on him, which he easily dodges.)

Roshambo says that Poafa's still the main suspect and it's time to commence the plan. All at once, Poafa's pearling away, and Roshambo and Planetlord are pearling towards him. Poafa keeps yelling that it's not him. Roshambo gets a hit on him, and then another, and another, and Poafa's dead.

Zam says Poafa's not at his spawn point. Poafa says he respawned, he moved his spawn point because he thought this might happen. He keeps saying the same thing: it's not him. He didn't do this. They're all assholes for killing him over a false accusation.

More accusations start flying. Planet thinks Poafa would've admitted to it by now if it was him, that he's not a good enough liar for this, especially since they don't know where he is anymore and he has less to gain from lying now than he did when he was about to get killed--maybe it's Vitalasy? Vitalasy claims to have 0 obsidian placed but then refuses to screenshare it or send a screenshot. Bacon thinks that's kind of sus, actually. Ro thinks the most sus is still Poafa and they should at least ban him from spawn for a while to see what happens. But if Medusa is here, or has an ally here, which is almost everyone, they could always stop while Poafa's gone to make it seem like him. Vitalasy thinks Ro is suspicious, actually. Zam wants to kill Vitalasy just in case. Mapicc initially disagrees but then says maybe they should kill Vitalasy unless he screenshares his obsidian count. Planetlord kills Vitalasy and then gives him the heart back. Ro says that this has accomplished nothing and they're back to almost square one; the evidence still points to Poafa, but his reaction seemed genuine. A new person, a polar bear named Woogie, shows up and says it was the NPPP; Zam and Bacon say it's definitely not Spoke but it could be Parrot. Planet and Vitalasy still suspect Parrot. Spoke vehemently denies everything and says that if they knew what Parrot was doing then they would know that he couldn't be involved. Roshambo says he knows what Parrot's doing and it's a good alibi but Parrot could be lying or have an accomplice. Mapicc and Roshambo say they're not going to figure it out like this; did they get anything from this? Bacon says that it's less certain to be Poafa than they thought, and Vitalasy is more suspicious than they thought. It's not much. They're approximately back to square one. Poafa asks if he can come back to spawn and they reluctantly agree, although Ro's keeping the heart until Poafa's confirmed innocent.

Planet says he has a plan but he doesn't want to announce it to everyone. He'll tell Perseus later.

Permalink Mark Unread

This is utter chaos. He is going to find Poafa, because they're not going to achieve much if they don't know where he is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Poafa's not at spawn, at least not right now.

(He's on the nether roof, headed back to his base, to collect whatever's left before he runs.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Someone who was better at Minecraft would be checking the Nether roof.

Drizzt is instead spiralling out from spawn.

Permalink Mark Unread

Poafa gets his things--not all of them, Zam stole some and some of them are worthless and some just don't fit in his ender chest, but enough--and then it's back to the nether roof for faster travel, heading out--not literally as far as he can, he doesn't go to the world border, but a few thousand blocks. Far enough out that it'd be hard to find him.

Permalink Mark Unread

This would be so much easier if he could openly use Guenhwyvar and if they didn't have the trial during the day time.

Permalink Mark Unread

He can search; he might even finds a build or two, scattered throughout the landscape. He can't identify them, can't match them to the people who own them. Poafa's not in any of them. Finding bases: it's hard, actually. And it's even harder when you don't know how to pie-ray, to check for second layer, to search for nether roof portals.

Permalink Mark Unread

He keeps looking until midnight, at which point he digs a hole in the ground and sleeps.

Permalink Mark Unread

At spawn the next day: another build has been petrified. Two signs are left at the site, as usual. Perseus group chat has been busy since the trial ended, if Drizzt has been checking it.

A few thousand blocks out, Poafa starts a small farm.

Permalink Mark Unread

Drizzt is checking the group chat now, because he can't believe Poafa even dared show his face back at spawn!

Permalink Mark Unread

Planet's plan from yesterday was that he made a setup to check throughout the night if anyone was near spawn; it's hooked up to an alarm that will wake him up if anyone shows up. Poafa had helped some with setting it up, but Planet double checked all of it before running it and didn't notice any flaws.

When he woke up, nothing had happened, and nothing had been turned to obsidian. When he came back in the afternoon, Zam's fishing club had been turned to obsidian. They don't know exactly when it happened--it would have been sometime during the day when Planet, Mapicc, and Ro were all off-server.

Permalink Mark Unread

And he maybe could have caught it if he wasn't trying to find Poafa. This is deeply frustrating.

Back to spawn! To deal with the fishing club!

Permalink Mark Unread

The signs at the fishing club:

Close call, but soon I will get my sweet revenge
The Petrification is almost complete

No one else is mining it today. Spawn is quiet.

Permalink Mark Unread

Even if he is the only one here, it's still worth it to try and clean up.

Permalink Mark Unread

Woogie shows up at one point to place a chest and then leave; a minute or so later, Parrot opens the chest and then leaves also. If Drizzt checks it after Parrot leaves, it's empty. That's basically the only interesting thing that happens at spawn that day.

Zam volunteers in Perseus group chat to keep watch that night.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's fair enough. He can take another watch soon, and he can use that time to start gathering materials to pay people back.

Permalink Mark Unread

That night, Mapicc and Ro spam everyone. They have conclusive, decisive proof. They caught Medusa in the act. Show up tomorrow at spawn, midday, same stage as before, for the reveal and execution.

Permalink Mark Unread

Drizzt is definitely going to be there!

Permalink Mark Unread

Once again, Roshambo is on the stage.

People in the audience that Drizzt knows: Baconwaffles, Subz, Mapicc, Mr. Cube, PlanetLord, Poafa, Terrain.

People in the audience that Drizzt doesn't know: a strange black-and-purple creature named Ashswag, a white multi-eyed creature named Leowook.

People not in the audience who are nonetheless present: Vitalasy, who is doing laps around the area; Parrot, who on a bridge far up in the sky, barely visible.

Most attendees are in full enchanted netherite; Poafa and Ashswag are in diamond armor, Mr. Cube has partial netherite with a diamond helmet, Leowook has diamond armor except for gold boots, and Vitalasy is once again wearing no armor but a pair of diamond boots.

A few people in the audience get nervous about Parrot and build little covers above their head so that Parrot can't drop anything on them.

"For those of you who don't know," Roshambo says, "I've gathered you all here today to once and for all expose Medusa and, hopefully, execute them. As long as all goes according to plan, both these things will be accomplished in the next half hour. So, it is time now to avenge all of the deaths, all of the betrayal, all of the defacing of spawn--everything that Medusa has done, it's time to finally bring that to justice. With that, I would like to ask Medusa to please show yourself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey guys!"

He is met with a chorus of "no" and "no way" and "it can't be PrinceZam".

Permalink Mark Unread

It's Prince Zam? That doesn't make sense, the evidence all points to Poafa--

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some of you may be in shock, some of you may be in disbelief, but we have pretty decisive evidence this time which I will share with you now."

The evidence is a recording, taken by Mapicc: he visits spawn, only to find that the only person there--Zam, who was supposed to be standing guard--is in the process of turning a building to obsidian. Zam leaves before Mapicc can reach him.

The reaction from the audience is, once again, one of shock and confusion. But it is, in fact, pretty decisive.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Guys, I'm a little nervous with public speaking." Zam repeats himself a couple times, takes some deep breaths. "So. My motive. It's a pretty simple story. Basically, right, it all started, one day I built a big pea shooter--actually right where we were standing right now and I decided to show it to my two friends, PlanetLord and Jaron, and after showing it to Planet and Jaron, right, there was a little bit of a silly prank under it, you know? I dropped him into a hole that obviously wouldn't have killed him. Obviously. But! They thought it was a trap, they got they got really mad, so they killed me and burnt all my stuff."

(Planetlord says they didn't burn all his stuff; Zam clarifies that he died in lava. Vitalasy shoots Zam. Zam asks for him to stop. Ro says that Zam can continue, Vitalasy isn't actually trying to jump anyone.)

"Okay. Basically, after this, my friend Terrain comes up to me and is like, hey Zam I've got hearts for you. He gives me a few hearts, I get up to 20, alright? And I'm like, okay, I'm ready to fight again! I go into the battle and then Mapicc decides to betray me and fight me in the battle, so it was a 3v1!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You were using illegal hearts to kill innocent players!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They weren't innocent whatsoever, they jumped me first, but okay, regardless, Mapicc attacked me so now I've been betrayed by my teammates and-- I guess my friends, I guess you could say, and at this point I'm in a point of distress, you know? And the next time I log on I see spawn is covered in pigs for whatever reason and-- a lot of you probably know this but, you know, since I joined this server I've been cleaning up literally everything at spawn. And after seeing this I kind of snapped. I began devising a simple plan. I was gonna slowly start covering builds in spawn with obsidian. I started doing that, you guys started getting all, you know, all-- defensive and uppity about it and all that-- and slowly but surely we got to the point where we're at now. Uh, I managed to frame Poafa perfectly, that was crazy. I don't know how I pulled that off. That's crazy, I don't know how you guys-- I don't know how that happened."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Neither do I."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Anyways, um-- yeah, no, I just-- I wanted to get revenge for all the, I don't know, betrayal I guess you could say? And this was my way of doing it. So, uh, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

It could be more of a betrayal, it could have been Mapicc or Ro, but-- Zam? Shy Zam, who taught him that beds were dangerous?

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright, Zam." Roshambo is holding his sword; he backs Zam up against the wall.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I promised Poafa he could stab you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wait, why are we killing him? He has a point."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Does he?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I want to be executed. I'm ready. I want to be executed. This is the third time. I'm very okay with this. Yeah. I do have a few more confessions to make, um. A lot of you are probably still wondering, oh, maybe there's another Medusa or something, right? Yeah, there isn't. It's all me. This was all me. All done by me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You want to be executed?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ummmmmm I dunno. Because I destroyed spawn? And now people want to kill me? I think that if people want to execute me, there's probably a good reason for that. And then if I get executed I don't have to, like, deal with the consequences, because I'll be dead. So I'm sort of getting the last laugh if you think about it."

Permalink Mark Unread

????????? "That. That doesn't make sense."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think it makes sense."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Guyyyys, this is dumb. Can we go back to Zam's confessions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right, yeah, I was saying something."

Zam's confessions are that he helped Pangi kill Parrot's pet bird, Prime, and that he broke Ash's swag sign. Parrot and Ash react with surprise and anger but Drizzt doesn't really have the context. He asks for Planetlord to kill him rather than Poafa and is shot down; Mapicc promised Poafa, and besides, Planetlord doesn't want to.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Zam, I have to say-- what you've been pulling off over the past few weeks has been very impressive. You've managed to trick all of us into thinking it's Poafa, you've managed to turn people against each other, you've managed to get kills without even touching a person. But--it's the end of the road. So. If you'd like to drop me your hearts for the execution, put yourself on one heart."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zam drops four hearts to Roshambo. "Okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Poafa, if you want to finish the job."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Considering the fact I lost my home, the only teammates I ever trusted-- Yeah.

It's been a fun run, Zam. Gotta say."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright. Bye!"

PrinceZam was slain by Poafa using [boafa deez nutz]
PrinceZam left the game

Permalink Mark Unread

Well. That's what has happened.

It's only been a few days since he has been here, but he still expects Zam to just appear at the default spawn point. And he doesn't. Because he was executed for being Medusa.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That was not a ban. That was a fake ban."

Permalink Mark Unread

A few more people confirm; Mapicc gets Zam on a call, and he agrees to come back to spawn, with some complaints.

While they're waiting for Zam to return, a few things happen:

- Poafa shoots Parrot once and Parrot's totem pops, giving him the Postmortal achievement; some people, including Poafa, seem shocked by this, while others (Roshambo, Mapicc, Spoke) are unsurprised
- Mapicc really wants to be the one to kill Zam this time; Poafa says that's fine since he already got one kill on Zam
- Bacon gives out pork chops! Free samples for IHOB! He makes a joke about how they should do more executions, they're good for business, and Leowook volunteers to be executed. Mapicc hits him once as a joke.

Leowook left the game
Leowook was slain by Mapicc

There is widespread shock that Leowook actually got banned for that, but it seems legit: Roshambo picked up five hearts from him that he was holding. Everyone's still a bit in shock around Leowook's body by the time Zam gets back.

Zam says he has more to say, that he forgot some things before because he didn't write them down. Mapicc asks if he's on one heart. As soon as he confirms, Ashswag kills him.

PrinceZam left the game
PrinceZam was slain by ashswagg

Mapicc kills Ashswag for doing that; he leaves Ash's items but keeps the heart. And then he kills Vitalasy for taking Ash's chestplate, although Vitalasy denies it.

It's pretty chaotic. Ro says he's leaving and calling Perseus chat.

Perseus chat is... confused, mostly. Well, guess that's it.

Permalink Mark Unread

He doesn't know Leowook, but he is not happy that he was killed by accident.

And Zam-- he was the one behind Medusa and now he's gone, and Drizzt is not sure if he feels more sad or betrayed.

He goes mining to be able to repay Subz.

Permalink Mark Unread

The rest of the night is quiet. Perseus agrees to disband now that Medusa's gone; half of them were on different teams anyway. No one takes watch; no one needs to.

Permalink Mark Unread

Subz has a few diamonds and several stacks of cobble show up at his base. Weird how those must have magically appeared.

At least tomorrow he can see if Guenhwyvar is back.

Permalink Mark Unread

The next morning, everything at spawn is obsidian. All the builds, all the paths.

Roshambo's sent out a message to everyone. Medusa was never just one person: it was Mapicc, Roshambo, and Zam, all working together. Zam was only ever one third of Medusa, and even then, he only joined a couple days ago; from the beginning, it was Mapicc and Roshambo pulling the strings.

Zam's been revived. All of spawn has been petrified. Meet at spawn in the afternoon for a final exchange of speeches and a final fight for control of spawn.

Parrot adds Drizzt to a new group chat: Parrot, Subz, Planetlord, Spoke, Ashswag, Baconwaffles. Everyone who might be interested in fighting Medusa. After a bit, they add someone named Clutch who Drizzt hasn't met. After longer than that, and with much excitement, they add someone named Clownpierce.

The plan is to pretend it's just Planet and Clown and Drizzt at first--Parrot's on one heart, Spoke doesn't wear pants, Subz is a pacifist, Clutch and Ashswag and Bacon aren't actually very involved. Clownpierce isn't either, he's less involved than Bacon is, but he wants to be one of the ones giving a speech. Parrot will be there giving a speech too but he actually won't be fighting. It'd be a tough 3v3, but winnable. But it won't be a 3v3. Subz agrees to let everyone use his base to gear up.

A few hours before the fight--

SpokeIsHere has reached the achievement [Postmortal]
SpokeIsHere blew up

And Ashswag is removed from the group chat; Subz says Ashswag crystaled Spoke. Which is bad for two reasons: first of all, Ashswag might be betraying them--which isn't terrible, 7v4 is still a huge numbers advantage, especially because Ashswag isn't actually very good at fighting--but second of all, it means that at least one person in the fight will be cheating. All bets are off.

They go to spawn tentatively, worried that the portal will be trapped. It isn't. On top of a blackstone-and-obsidian snake with emerald eyes stand Medusa: Mapicc, Roshambo, and Zam.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thinking a bit what that means can happen later. He's going to fight to defend spawn, and then he'll work out where he went wrong.

... if people are already cheating, if bets are already off-- well. If Parrot dies, Mappic and Ro might get to meet Guenhwyvar again.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a bit of back and forth about the fact that only three people have showed up; Parrot sells it pretty well.

<roshambogames> you guys suck
<roshambogames> this was gonna be so cool
<roshambogames> ok anyway

"Alright," Roshambo says. "Speech time."

His speech is pretty clearly rehearsed, although he falters a couple times trying to remember the next sentence.

"As you might know, we are Medusa. Together, we have petrified the entirety of spawn. And-- guys, you have to understand. Nothing on this server lasts. Nothing on this server ever lasts for any period of time. And I came up with a way to prevent that, through the petrification. And... Although we may have manipulated, we may have lied, we may have put friends against each other, we may have caused betrayal-- We've done a lot of wrong. But I think the means justify the ends. Now spawn will be eternal forever. And if you oppose that, then you are about to die, right here right now. Before we start, I'd like to give anyone the opportunity to join us. If you sympathize with our stance and you would like to help eternalize spawn and support our stance--then please join us up on top of the snake right now. But if not, then..."

Permalink Mark Unread

How is this eternalising spawn, seeing as they themselves were tearing down their own buildings.

He gets ready for whatever Ro is about to do.

What Ro is about to do is wait a moment to see if anyone joins him and then cede the floor to the other team for dramatic speeches.

"Season four spawn has got to be my favorite spawn of any Lifesteal season. It really had a bunch of creative builds and-- a bunch of stories attached to them, too. And you just fucking ruined it. You fucking muppets. And for that reason, I'm going to kill all three of you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We ruined it? I think we preserved it. We're saving it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can I say something, bro? Are the other speeches over?" (Quick confirmation from Roshambo and Clownpierce.) "Okay. The author of War and Peace, Leo Tolstoy, once said-- Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself. Basically, what we're saying is that we are not here to fight. We are here to win."

And on the word win, Subz and Spoke and Bacon and Clutch come out from where they were hiding; people splash potions on themselves and then they start pearling towards Medusa and Medusa is pearling away.

Permalink Mark Unread

Using ender pearls is dizzying, but undeniably effective.

He tries to keep on Medusa's flanks. This is going to be much easier if they don't allow them to scatter.

Permalink Mark Unread

The fight is not going great for Medusa. Roshambo and Zam are shaking; Mapicc is the calmest, yelling reassurances that they can still win this, just keep going, but he's also chugging gaps and his shield is getting damaged fast. Zam's getting targeted pretty hard. Mapicc is trying to target Spoke, but it's not working very well while also trying to stop any of them from dying in a 7v3.

And then Spoke pulls out the crystals. There's obsidian everywhere. The only thing Medusa can do is try to run, but Zam takes a crystal to the face before he can get away. Not dead yet, but looking pretty hurt; Mapicc eats his last god apple and jumps in to try and get everyone off him.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's strategically sensible to try and keep all your team alive.

It's loyal to help your friend in danger.

It's just not a good idea if you have someone chasing you down who wants to specifically kill you.

If Mapicc wasn't distracted and surrounded, it would have ended up differently. Drizzt would admit Mapicc was better than him.

> Mapicc was killed by Drizzt

Permalink Mark Unread

Mapicc forgot to set his spawn; he's back at spawn, with no stuff. Luckily, everyone is distracted; he turns his second layer off and crouches out of sight. Won't last, but he can live a bit longer, probably. Roshambo and Zam are split up; Roshambo is in, approximately, a 1v1 with Subz, while almost everyone else is on Zam. A few people split off to aggro pearl on Ro.

(Ashswag has found Mapicc. He's not doing anything about that; he hasn't actually participated in the fight at all, on either side. Yet, anyway.)

PrinceZam has reached the goal [Postmortal]

A shower of gold and green sparks explode around Zam. Roshambo is holding a shield rather than a totem; he's holding his own against Subz until everyone else shows up--most of them aren't very good fighters, but they're good distractions, and that's all Subz really needs.

Zam's second totem pops; he's out of totems. He tries to pearl away and pearls into someone else farther away. He's screaming in panic, a high-pitched shriek, NO NO NO PLEASE OH GOD PLEASE NO--NO NO NO--IT'S OVER--

Medusa starts heading back to spawn. Well, Ro and Zam do; Mapicc respawned there. No armor, no weapons, although Ro did get some pearls and pork chops from his ender chest. Not a threat. It's... quiet. It's weird how quickly the world can go from the chaos of battle, of 10 people shouting over each other, to silence.

There are cobwebs covering the ground. Roshambo is the first to reach the stage; Ashswag is there, too, but he doesn't do anything. Ro waits for Mapicc and Zam show up.

<PlanetLord> ggs guys
<PlanetLord> ill give you guys back your shield.

Once again, Ro's the one to speak.

"So. I guess we lost. But--I will say that--maybe I was wrong. 'Cause looking at it right now, I realize that--all this, has just led to--our perfect world, our eternal city, what we wanted to be a peaceful area, is... once again, just another violent battlefield. So maybe I was wrong."

Ashswag puts down a crystal.

Mapicc blew up

And then Ashswag is flying, moving faster than humans can move without moving at all.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not a thing he expected Ashswag to do, but he's definitely seen wizards do similar before.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's some chaos; people follow Ashswag as best as they can, trying to hit him and mostly failing. Subz is mostly laughing; other people seem more annoyed. Ashswag is having a wonderful time. The consensus from the crowd seems to be that Ashswag is "hacking".

Ash flies to Zam, kills him in one hit, flies back away.

PrinceZam was killed by ashswagg using [twitch.tv/georgewashington]

Ash flies over to another body of land, waits for everyone to swim over to him, flies back. He's still giggling.

And then Ashswag disappears.

"I'll be back in a second, I need to let him know he's banned for a while." And then Parrot takes his leave from the crowd.

Permalink Mark Unread

Without anything to do, the crowd disperses. Medusa has taken this opportunity; they're long gone. Baconnwaffles and Planetlord are sticking together; everyone else seems to be setting off on their own.

Permalink Mark Unread

He expected something more.  They have enacted justice against Medusa, but--

The part of him that is from Menzoberranzan boggles at the thought of leaving enemies anything less than completely annihilated. That part of him that left that city wonders at letting wrongdoers free while not even asking how to prevent it next time.

...He goes back to his mines. He still needs to pay back Subz.

Permalink Mark Unread

No one disturbs him.

Permalink Mark Unread

The next few days he spends in a mixture of mining, returning resources to Subz, and making a bolt hole away from spawn.

It's a very effective strategy for not thinking about things! And he should. He just does not understand what is happening well enough. He never would have said he understood Menzoberranzan, but in the face of this place--

But he also shouldn't spend all of his time hiding in a hole (he has done enough of that) and he has no reason not to go to Spawn, so he does.

At spawn are Baconwaffles and Planetlord! Planetlord is in a boat; Baconwaffles is standing next to a sign,

princezam review
hey guys its me
i liked the tour we saw stuff :D

"The boat tour will take you all around spawn, we'll tell you about all the, all the builds, all the history. Do you want to go on the boat tour?"

Permalink Mark Unread

It would be good to know the history before everything became obsidian. "I would be interested, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool, that's cool. Just get in the boat with Planetlord, he'll show you around."

Permalink Mark Unread

He is now in a boat!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright," Bacon says, "Let's begin the boat tour."

And then, suddenly, Drizzt and Planet are in a small obsidian box with four levers on the sides and water at the bottom. Planet flicks a lever and Bacon appears next to them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Teleportation seems a bit much for a boat tour, but okay!

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do we do, we have so much power--"

Bacon's blocking Drizzt in with obsidian until it's an even smaller box with less water; he splashes strength on himself and Planet.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just kill him, right? I don't really have anything to say. Sorry, Drizzt, it's not personal, we need the hearts."

Permalink Mark Unread

...for a moment there he honestly thought the small obsidian box was part of the history of spawn.

He tries to get out of the boat and draw his sword.

Permalink Mark Unread

He can do that! But it's a 2v1 in a small space that he's blocked into, and they're both prepared and he isn't. It takes a minute--"this is really awkward", Bacon says--but it doesn't take that long.

Permalink Mark Unread

Bacon's at spawn, by the shore; he does in fact give Drizzt all his stuff back. "Here you go."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you." ... that is not the correct response to being murdered. "Don't do that again."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No problem, man. How's this, we won't do it again to you. I'm not making any promises about everyone else."

Permalink Mark Unread

"... How many hearts do you even need?"

Permalink Mark Unread

...It isn't very valuable as far as information goes, and besides, what's Drizzt going to do about it?

"Five."

Permalink Mark Unread

That's half the amount he has now,  but he isn't sure whether that's a lot.

"I can't exactly stop you attacking other people."

Permalink Mark Unread

It is, in fact, a lot. It's even more of a lot when you're starting from three.

"Cool, then we're in agreement."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess we are." There has to be a good way to warn people without alerting Bacon and Planet (he does not want to fight them 2v1 again) but he'll have to think about it.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's probably pushing his luck, but--

"I assume you don't want to leave a positive review."

Permalink Mark Unread

"'Smoothest death experience I've had so far, would recommend to other people'?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, like, this was a great boat tour and totally not a trap, you should also go on it. Except not those exact words because that's incredibly sus."

Permalink Mark Unread

... making a plausibly deniable suspicious review would be a way to warn people without getting in a fight. It's a bit under handed for his tastes, but it would work. "Sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Have a sign."

If it's too suspicious Bacon will just break the sign. Not much risk here.

Permalink Mark Unread

He puts down a sign that says "lovely building. Reasonable price."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Okay, well, we didn’t actually sell you a building, even if we took you on the actual boat tour there wasn’t any, um, buildings for sale, but you know what, that’s fine.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can specify the price is for the tour."

Permalink Mark Unread

“We literally did not charge you anything for the— like I said, it’s fine. Thanks for the, uh, review.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome." And with that he leaves.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Bacon does break the sign after he leaves. It is really not a good review. This is the risk you take when asking people you just killed to leave you a review.)

Permalink Mark Unread

He could, hypothetically, come back and leave more signs.

...covering spawn in signs probably won't help.

He goes back to mining. He is slowly getting something that approximates full gear and so, so much stone.

(He's been taking Guenhwyvar mining with him. It's risky, but the trustworthy company is good.)

Permalink Mark Unread

The death messages trickle in throughout the day: Rekrap, Terrain, Mr. Cube. Not quite five, in total, but the word must have spread enough after that; there aren't any more death messages.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a shame the boat tour wasn't real. That would have been fun.

He continues mining.

He's going to have to work what his principles mean in a world where you can die without being killed. They can't be meaningless, just-- if death means something different, how he feels about those he deal death must be different.

Permalink Mark Unread

A few days pass. A large sandstone-and-birch church is built at spawn, or at least its facade; it's empty, for now. A new business, too: the APO, founded and run by Leowook, one of the people Drizzt hasn't talked to. One block of each ore--including diamond and netherite--for a membership.

And a couple days after that:

He goes to spawn.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mapicc waves him over. "...Hey. I'm, uh, not mad or anything, if I was I could've told Parrot about--" Vague gesture. Some things you shouldn't say at spawn. "I actually thought we should bring you in on Medusa but Ro said he didn't know you well enough, which was, like, fair."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wouldn't have wanted to be in Medusa," he snaps.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, so Ro was right, Mapicc doesn't say, even though it's his first instinct. Nor does he say we know about Guen, you wouldn't have had much choice in the matter, even though realistically it would've been true. Believe it or not, Roshambo, he is capable of being diplomatic. Sort of. Sometimes.

Instead, he puts his hands up. "Dude, chill out! Fuck, dude, if you want to be enemies we can be, whatever, but I was hoping we didn't have to be."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would also like to not be enemies. Why do you want to talk to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So that we can, like, be allies? Leo's doing this whole thing with the APO, it's suuuuuper sus, and you're cool and a good fighter and shit, I wanted to see if we could, like... be allies again." Friends is probably pushing it.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Right. He's played this game many times before, and if he agreed, it wouldn't be the first time he was stabbed in the back by it.  "Can you give me a good reason to trust you that the APO is a problem?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uhhhh it's, like, a pyramid scheme? I'm not saying you have to, like, go kill them right now or anything, I just want to, y'know, see if we could put Medusa behind us, be on a team again. At least not be enemies if stuff does break out. I know I lied to you, like, with Medusa and all that, but I haven't snitched on you, I get some credit for that. Come on. Also, it was cool."

It's kind of looking like Drizzt is a no. But he tried.

Permalink Mark Unread

HE DID NOT CLEAR THAT MUCH OBSIDIAN FOR IT TO BE "COOL."

"I will look into the APO, and if there are actual concerns, I will consider allying with you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Eyeroll. "Whatever, dude."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll let you know. Are we finished?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unless you've got anything more to say, yeah, that was it. Let me know if you change your mind."

Drizzt is really lucky that Mapicc isn't a snitch.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mapicc is really lucky that Drizzt will consider him dying once to be enough. It's a mutual balance of terror! "I will."

Is the APO around spawn?

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a small building labeled AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY at spawn, yes. (There's also... black glass? Drawing a sort of outline around spawn. Not walls, at least not yet.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, he's not authorised, but he is investigating. He opens the door.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a small stone brick room with some chests and a nether portal.

Behind the nether portal is a hallway that leads to a much grander room, with blackstone walls and a quartz floor. There are barrels; each barrel contains a piece of maxed out netherite gear, named LW, such that one barrel has helmets, another has swords, etc. There are five full sets, in total.

Permalink Mark Unread

5 isn't really even a stockpile of armour.

There's no other people around?

Permalink Mark Unread

Looks like... Zam, Leowook, and Planetlord? Leowook is the one placing the black glass; it's becoming more and more of a wall as he does it. When Drizzt steps out of the APO, Leowook squints at him suspiciously before, apparently, being satisfied with what he sees and going back to placing glass.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's probably worthwhile finding out what's happening with spawn this time.

He goes up to Leowook. "Hello."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is there a reason for the wall?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is APO protected, APO insured. Meaning anyone who dies here, any damage that gets done, that's APO insured."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Insured?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Like--anything that happens inside the dome--it's, uh, going to be a dome--if you get hurt, if things get damaged, I'll help fix it, because it happened on APO-protected land."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is that the main purpose of the APO?" He is trying not to sound incredibly suspicious, but...

Permalink Mark Unread

"Main purpose of the APO is just to be a business. We're selling memberships."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And the memberships fund protecting spawn?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I... guess?" Kind of a weird phrasing, but it works.

Permalink Mark Unread

This seems like an attempt to control spawn! "Would you describe it differently?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, if someone dies, the memberships would definitely be funding getting the hearts back, but they're not really funding terraforming or obsidian-mining directly. Indirectly, I guess. I'd probably phrase it differently, but you're not wrong."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods. "So the memberships are an alliance."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mostly the memberships are a trade offer, but I'd like to think that the members would support--if not me in general then at least the APO."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods.  "I appreciate you answering my questions."

Permalink Mark Unread

Drizzt didn't actually have that many questions. He didn't ask what the memberships got you or what else the APO sold or how many memberships there were or how much it cost to buy one or whether it was a scam or who the existing members are or any of the other questions that Leo has been answering pretty regularly.

"Sure, anytime. Pleasure talking to you."

Drizzt whispers to mapicc: let me know what you decide

Permalink Mark Unread

Mapicc whispers to Drizzt: k
Mapicc whispers to Drizzt: let me know if you need gear or fighting practice

Hmmmm. Probably still not trustworthy enough to add to the Team Awesome group chat, but it might be worth making a new one with Drizzt if they do end up doing more things together. At the very least, he should let Roshambo and Zam know that they have a new ally. ...Or maybe just Roshambo? Nah, if Zam had to pick between Team Awesome and the APO he'd pick Team Awesome, no point hiding this from him when they could be using him as a mole. (He had better pick Team Awesome.) Mapicc sends a message in the Team Awesome group chat letting them know that Drizzt is a tentative ally against the APO, and another message to just Zam asking about potential plans they can do with Zam undercover as an APO member.

Permalink Mark Unread

Drizzt does not need gear, he has been doing so much bed and normal mining. Not that Mapicc needs to know that.

Permalink Mark Unread

You can be doing a lot of mining and still end up low on xp bottles, or potions, or ender pearls, want to switch out a sword with knockback for one without. Or you can die and lose all your stuff! Many possibilities.

After a bit, Zam hesitantly approaches. "Um. Hi."

Permalink Mark Unread

...why is Zam here?

"Hello?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I, um, Mapicc said you were, um, our ally again? Maybe? And I wanted to say, um, I'm really sorry about Medusa. I didn't actually, um, know about it, for most of it, I actually almost betrayed them, but, um. I didn't. Yeah. Um. I guess I just. Wanted to say that? Because it, um, it wasn't--I don't know, I'm rambling, I'm sorry. I just wanted to, um, apologize. Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"--I do appreciate you apologising." Zam seems so terrified. "I didn't know either."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I, um. I got that. That's--why I'm apologizing, if you knew it would be different probably, but. Yeah." Drizzt... probably doesn't want to kill him, because Drizzt is an ally now. And if Drizzt did want to kill him that would be fairly justified, all things considered, and Zam would let him do it. So it's fine and he should not be freaking out this much for a simple conversation.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why did you do it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Um, Mapicc and Ro wanted me to, and it was, um, honestly it was just... really exciting that they trusted me enough to tell me about it? They've been my friends for a while, and then they were, like, telling me their secret plans and asking for help, so I just sort of... said yes. I didn't want to, like, let them down. And then I was in it, you know? Like, I was just as much a part of it as they were. And they were still my friends, and it made them happy when I helped them, and even when I thought maybe I should betray them I still--didn't want to betray them."

Permalink Mark Unread

That's... that's a lot.  "I didn't want to betray them either."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, they lied to you, that's--different, I think. I don't think they really-- thought of it as a betrayal? I mean, I definitely didn't. Like, you weren't on Team Awesome, you were anti-Medusa, they turned out to be Medusa. It's not like we were betrayed by Subz or Poafa or whoever. I mean, if anything, we betrayed you, we're the ones who were, like, lying to you about being anti-Medusa. But I've been on Team Awesome with them for a few months, I left Pangi for them, we did a bunch of stuff together, they trusted me enough to bring me in on it, if did something, that'd definitely be a betrayal. And I... don't really have anyone else? I'm pretty sure Parrot and Pangi both hate me, I helped with the prison, I helped with Medusa, I've, um. Burned a lot of bridges. But Mapicc and Ro, they're, they're good to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

He's quite sympathetic to the isolation. "I-- I wish they weren't Medusa. But that's because they were good to me too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah." Pause. "They'd probably let you join if you wanted, I think Mapicc likes you? If Mapicc and I both vouch for you that's majority vote. And Roshambo at least doesn't want to be enemies, I think he'd be fine with it. Um, I guess you're already sort of allied again, so that makes sense, I guess. And, um, we did--we did do Medusa. So if you don't want to then that's, um, totally fine, I get it, no big deal. Sorry. I was, um, apologizing for that, not--sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe I'll join." He sighs. "I have seen people do a lot worse than Medusa. I have had people lie to me worse than Medusa. But-- they tricked me into thinking it was Poafa, and it's going to take-- more proof that they mean well to change how I feel."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ro definitely means well. I think. But, um, you probably shouldn't believe me about things, given--everything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"--I don't expect liars to apologise?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh." He genuinely hadn't thought of that; he considers it. "I could still be wrong, though. I don't, I don't know, man." Drizzt is really, really nice. Way more nice than Zam deserves, for sure. Zam does not feel at all better for how they fucked him over during Medusa.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe after the APO, I'll see about allying. ... there's something Mapicc and Ro have seen that you haven't."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Follow me." Drizzt starts leading him away from spawn.

Permalink Mark Unread

"O...kay." This is probably a trap. That's fine, he doesn't have anything that valuable on him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Drizzt starts digging out a room, copying what Mapicc did last time to keep it hard to find.

And then he has a spawn egg in his hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zam jumps back, sword in hand, breath caught in his chest. "Holy moly! How did you--holy. Daaaamn, okay. And Mapicc and Ro--know how to do this?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They don't know how-- even don't know how, she just came with me when I got here." He summons Guenhwyvar. "Zam, meet Guenhwyvar."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zam is going to shriek and press himself against the wall!!!!! What the fuck!!!!!!!!! Oh no he is going to die here—

—It takes him a solid 30 seconds to realize that Guenhwyvar is not attacking him and another 10 to calm down. “What the fuck!!!!!!” Okay, deep breaths. “Is it—going to hurt me?” Probably not, since it hasn’t yet. Stupid question. “So Mapicc and Ro—know that you can do this, but they can’t? And you don’t know—how you do this.”

Permalink Mark Unread

When he sees Zam press himself to the wall, he puts a hand on Guenhwyvar's shoulders. He's not actually holding her back, but he wants to look like he is. "You're a friend, she won't hurt you. And that's the shape of the issue. -- they have told me to keep her secret."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Oh. Yeah, you— that’s a good idea. That’s not—spawn eggs aren’t—you shouldn’t have that.” And Drizzt trusted Zam with this, after being told to keep it a secret. Drizzt called Zam a friend. Zam’s brain spins. He peels himself off the wall and looks at her. Tries not to be afraid and fails. “She’s beautiful.” Stupid thing to say. Stupid, stupid, stupid. He’s still shaking a little. Drizzt has a spawn egg and Drizzt spawned in some sort of huge modded cat and none of this should be possible and Drizzt trusts Zam.

Permalink Mark Unread

"She is," he looks soppily at Guenhwyvar. "I know she can be a little intimidating."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's okay. I just--wasn't expecting--this. Wow. This is--wow. Goodness. She's--friendly?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's friendly." To Guen: "Go on, say hello."

Permalink Mark Unread

Guenhwyvar sits in front of Zam. Her head comes up to his chest, and she radiates a desire for pats.

Permalink Mark Unread

Very very tentative pat.

"She's soft." His voice is soft, too, wondering at it. There is a beautiful impossible cat and she's soft and she likes being pet and she's not hurting him and neither is Drizzt and Drizzt trusted Zam enough to share this with him, knowing that Zam could get him banned or cleared for it. Nothing about the situation feels quite real. "Thank you for--for showing me. Wow."

"I thought it was only fair, if Mapicc and Ro already know. I trust you-- a bit more than them."

Permalink Mark Unread

Two hands is the minimal acceptable number for petting. Where is the person with three hands.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. Huh. That's--wow." Zam is not even using two hands. Zam is using one hand, very cautiously. Drizzt trusts him. "Wow. I--wow. I don't know what to say, I--thank you. Wow."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am hoping you won't do anything that would cause her harm."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course not. I would never." The answer is immediate, easy. Drizzt trusts him. He can't just--let that trust down.

Permalink Mark Unread

Guenwhyvar is now lying down on top of his feet. Here's hoping he wasn't planning to leave any time soon.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can get her to move, if you'd like."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, it's--it's okay." Zam just lives here now. That's fine. Zam can live here now. ...He takes off his crown so that if someone passes by they won't see his second layer and get curious.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Now you know as much as your allies."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. Okay. That's. Wow. Huh." Guenhwyvar can get pats while Zam processes. There's a lot to process.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zam can take his time to process. Guen is happy.

Permalink Mark Unread

After a while:

"So, you showed this to Mapicc and Ro, and then... do you just have infinite spawn eggs? How many Guenhwyvars are there? Or does she, like, disappear, can she go--back into being an egg somehow?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The egg will come back after some time. She can only be out for half a day out of every two days."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. Can she--do things? Or is she just, like, a fancy pet?" It feels rude to ask, but it's important. If he doesn't ask this now he will regret it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"She is a skilled hunter." He sounds very affectionate.

Permalink Mark Unread

Great! Great. Cool cool cool cool cool. He can freak out about that… Later. Not now.

“That’s cool.” His voice is not entirely chill, but it’s mostly chill. Within the bounds of normal Zam anxiety.

Permalink Mark Unread

"My life would be somewhat easier if she didn't have to stay secret."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. Ummmmmmmmm. I--don't actually have the power to do that? You could talk to Parrot, I guess? I'm not the admin, I don't actually decide what the rules are."

This is actually a fairly easy one to answer, because it's true, Zam doesn't have any power here. It's kind of relieving to remember, actually.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't expect you to do anything about it. I've been told not to tell Parrot, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I mean--Parrot is the only one who can, um, either ban you or not ban you? For this? And so if you want to make sure you can keep her then you should keep it a secret from Parrot, because Parrot can't do anything if he doesn't know, but no one else can really....make it be fine for it to not be a secret....if that makes sense...?"

It is also probably better that she's a secret because if she wasn't a secret--no, Zam's not thinking about this. Drizzt trusted him with this.

Permalink Mark Unread

Drizzt leans over to ruffle her coat. "Thanks for telling me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I mean--yeah, um, no problem? Anytime."

Permalink Mark Unread

"... is there anything else I should know not to do so I don't get banned?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ummmmm it's mostly just exploiting? So, like, hack clients, anything you can't get in vanilla survival. I dunno if backdooring would get you banned but I wouldn't test it. Um. No using end crystals in fights? No raid farms." Mapicc has a raid farm but Parrot doesn't know about it and anyway Mapicc's only using it for emeralds to trade for redstone for his world record thing he's doing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I don't think I'm doing any of those things?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, you're, um, you're definitely--you're definitely exploiting? This is not--this is definitely not something that everyone can get in vanilla survival. But, um, other than that, yeah, I think probably you're fine?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I didn't--choose to do this. It just happened."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zam's head bobs up and down in a nod. "Huh. Yeah. I don't--I don't know why that would happen? I mean, could be Parrot is doing this to you, but you--seem like you know Guenhwyvar? I don't know, man."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Guenhwyvar was with me before I came here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, so, probably not Parrot." Shrug. Zam focuses on petting Guenhwyvar, because this is--something to do that is not having this conversation.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fair enough. Drizzt doesn't like this conversation.

He is also petting Guenhwyvar.

Permalink Mark Unread

YES. MORE HANDS.

Permalink Mark Unread

Guenhwyvar is nice. Guenhwyvar is nice and Drizzt is nice and Zam just--focuses on that. They're nice to him and they trust him and he can't just--betray that trust. Mapicc has a raid farm. Zam still has some of Terrain's duped hearts in his enderchest. Drizzt didn't even do it on purpose like everyone else did, and he hasn't--used it, hasn't gotten Guenhwyvar to hunt anyone down. As far as Zam knows, the only thing he's done is pet her for half a day out of every two days, and Zam is also petting her right this very moment. Zam was awful to Drizzt and Drizzt repaid that by calling Zam his friend and saying that he trusted Zam. So--Zam pets Guenhwyvar, and it's easy to love her a little bit.

"She's nice," Zam offers after a while. "And--thank you again. For showing me. You--didn't have to do that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It didn't seem fair if Ro and Mapicc knew and you didn't."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "It's still--most people wouldn't do that? Like, yeah, it's less fair, but it's also safer if fewer people know. And, um, you told them when you still thought we were--" good people. "--on your side? I think? Whereas you told me after--everything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You apologised."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess, yeah." Zam rubs behind Guenhwyvar's ears.

Permalink Mark Unread

Guenhwyvar rolls over onto her back to show her belly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Very tentative belly rub?

Permalink Mark Unread

Guenhwyvar is melting and kneading the air.

Permalink Mark Unread

Drizzt is looking on affectionately.

Permalink Mark Unread

Guenhwyvar is so good?? Drizzt is so good???? What did Zam ever do to deserve this.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sorry Zam, he's interacting with people (and cats) who are trusting and starved for interaction.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zam will just...continue petting Guenhwyvar until she decides to move off his feet.

When she does: "I think I'm gonna go now, if that's okay--? Um, unless you had anything else you wanted to tell me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is all I needed to tell you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Cool. Cool cool cool. Bye!"

Time to leave. ...And by "leave" he means "walk for a while in a random direction, find another hole to hide in, and wait for Drizzt's second layer to turn off before actually heading back to his base".

Permalink Mark Unread

Drizzt spends some time with just him and Guenhwyvar, and heads back to his makeshift base.

Permalink Mark Unread

Once Zam is confident that Drizzt is no longer in the area, he puts his crown back on and heads back to his own base. There's a small shack on the surface like a villager house, but the real base is at the bedrock layer under a lush cave. Not impossible to find, by any means, but it's small and the world is big and he'd rather not lead Drizzt straight there.

He paces, talking to himself as he does. He messages Mapicc and Ro. They confirm that they've known for a couple weeks and they were planning to tell him if it became relevant but Drizzt wasn't doing much after Medusa so it slipped their minds. He tries not to wonder what else they're not telling him and fails. He tries not to think about what he just saw and fails. He opens his DMs with Parrot, once, and then immediately closes it and hates himself for even considering it. He paces.

Permalink Mark Unread

The rest of the evening at spawn is quiet. Leowook finishes constructing the dome; nothing much else happens.

Permalink Mark Unread

Drizzt checks if the dome, for example, has doors

Permalink Mark Unread

Where the path leads in and out of the spawn chunks, there's an arched opening that lets you go in and out, yes; it's not even symbolically closed off. As far as non-symbolically, it's not a cube of obsidian, it's made of glass on top of dirt; it's trivial to get in and out wherever you want.

Permalink Mark Unread

So he's a little less concerned than he was, but he still very much does not like it. It would be trivial to block the archways in a fight, for example.

drizzt whispers to princezam: the dome is done.

Permalink Mark Unread

PrinceZam whispers to Drizzt: ok

It's obviously a power grab but Zam's not really that worried about it, especially since he's an APO member and presumably in Leo's good graces. He passes the message on to Mapicc anyway.

Permalink Mark Unread

Drizzt goes to kill some spiders (he still feels weird about doing that) so he has webs in case of a future confrontation with the APO.
