'All right.  I trust you.'

She texts Mal:

Hi, it's Kaylee again.  Things are going pretty well.  I mentioned Lianne and I are on a road trip with her sister Emma?  We've decided it's a good idea to give her an enchanted gun for self-defense against witches, but neither of us know how to enchant existing weapons.  Is that something it's possible/safe to explain over the phone?

Hi Kaylee. I'm not sure, I've never tried explaining it not in person... There's a slight trick to it, which is easier to feel, but most magical girls can figure it out on their own, even without guidance.

It's not something that can go badly wrong or be dangerous if you mess it up, then?

Not in my experience, though I'd be careful about where you aim the finished product.

Of course.  Thanks, Mal.

As long as we're talking - I think I'd like to check in with you from time to time, while I'm travelling.  I think one of the reasons I got as bad as I did about my wish is because I felt like I didn't have anyone to talk to about it, and I want to try to... be close to more people, about this stuff.

That might be a good idea, yeah. It always helps, having someone to talk to. A support network.

Right, exactly

Thanks for talking.  Should get back to the group now.  Talk to you later?

To Lianne, and Emma: "Mal says it's safe to just - try to figure out how to do it by feel."  She turns to address Lianne more specifically.  "Do you want to do it, or me?"

You're welcome. Talk to you later.

Lianne, meanwhile, shrugs. "I don't really have - a preference..."

"I think - I'll try, then."

She... picks it up, carefully.  It feels - strange - in her hands.  Which doesn't make very much sense, she conjures her own deadly weapons all the time...

She frowns at it.  She's at a bit of a loss, at least at first, but...

But...

...but, she realizes, when she does conjure her own knives, there's a kind of - weapon-ness, that she's - making, or pulling from, that she uses to make them, that wants to make itself into a knife.  And she thinks she can put that weapon-ness into...

Light shimmers over the gun, like the light that makes itself into daggers for her, and it goes from harsh dark grey to silver accented with a pretty blue, ornate little filigree designs where the mundane object had harsh edges, a little crest framing the end of the barrel.

"Good job!"

She grins.  "Thanks."

It's - lighter, somehow, and feels more intuitive to use, though still not nearly as much as her knives.

She sets it down, slides it back across the table toward Emma.

She takes it.

"Strange."

"It should work on witches and familiars now, if you run into one."

'Didn't think to ask Mal how they work against magical girls, but we're gonna be talking more, I can bring it up sometime?'

"Alright. Thanks. Will it fire any differently?"

'Yeah, that sounds good...'

"I - don't think so?  I'm not sure actually.  We could - drive out somewhere deserted for you to try it out..."

"I'd prefer that before any live fire situations come up..."

"Yeah, I think that's a good idea too."

"But fortunately there's a lot of empty desert around here."

She nods, and glances at Lianne.  "I think - we could go out sometime in the next couple days?"

She nods, too. "That works for me."

"Alright."
