...for they've got enough on their plate, seriously

Fannar has charted all kinds of things - stopping aging on the whole planet, daeva-like indestructibility - in the last several years of 'do Elves understand what 'soon' means' anticipation. He sets himself to remembering them.

Iobel has similar things set up. Charts! Lovely charts!

They snap into place just like they should.

And then she can't charge them.

"...it'd be more than a hex," he says after a moment of horrified frustration. "That has to be it."

"...yeah, that'd do it. We need a way to - to pool spells, or just have more than six -"

"There's got to be a way - there's no reason for the limit to be six - pooling spells might be the more tractable avenue, though -"

"I'll start trying charts for it..."

"Likewise. Damn it. I was really looking forward to that -"

"Me too." Sigh. "...the working memory boost is still very cool."

"Yes. I shall write him and thank him. There probably are things that'll still charge that weren't learnable before, just not ones as wildly ambitious as these..."

...he sighs longingly at the spellcharts... "Someone should tell all those Elves with young children, too, if their boosts to working memory doesn't make the children nigh-omnipotent then they may not want to take the risk..."

"Yeah - I'll send them a bulletin -"

"Did you try something for embodying familiars without a binder -"

"Yeah. Didn't even snap, let alone charge, so I may just have written it wrong... or it's conceptually impossible, one of those."

"Latter seems more likely, you usually do very careful work - can I take a look -"

"Sure." She passes him the chart.

It takes a very long time to look over, of course. He scowls. "Nothing obviously wrong, but I suppose it wouldn't be obvious -"

"Yeah. I'll do it over from scratch and see if - or you could, that'd be less likely to copy any misapprehension I was stuck under -"

"I'd be happy to -

even if it's conceptually impossible this way we'll probably run across a magic system that can do it at some point -"

"Hope so," she murmurs. "- I, I'm going to start a project of censusing spirit animals, all of them, so we have a record, if we ever..."

"Oh, good idea.

Have any adults tried - with the retroactive eidetic memory -"

"I loaned my father my necklace. He could remember talking about his spirit animal quite well, recover information that way - he was an otter, he called him Long - but he can't remember interacting with Long directly."

"That doesn't even make any sense, why would it work that way -"

"I don't know!"

"And why midnight, why six -" he sets to charting.

The King comes in a few minutes later. "We omnipotent?"

"Nope."
