The bored twin fidgets and gets out a notebook to scribble in and fidgets more and complains about how bored he is and steals his brother's pencil and uses it for one doodle and then gives it back, and, finally, at five minutes past six, tosses an eraser at the clock on the wall and announces, "Is it just me or have we been abandoned?"

"I guess detention probably doesn't go until six thirty."

"Yeah I'm pretty sure we've been abandoned. The question is how thoroughly."

"Sorry guys."

"Oh, now you're sorry."

Azalea's already come and gone. Her parents are going to be so annoyed if she has to be picked up by one of them at this hour.

"We could check the school office for a phone?"

"Good plan!"

The school office has been locked up, and the lights inside have been turned off.

"I think breaking into the school office is a crime or something," she says seriously. "Do any of the clubs go past six?"

"They do not. Well! This is exciting."

"I vote we break in anyway."

"Let's not."

This is the worst thing that has ever happened. It is not the worst thing that could happen, but it is the worst thing that ever has.

"We could leave school grounds and find a payphone or something?"

"Leaving school grounds could be an adventure, I think they lock the gates when they close up."

"Hey, breaking out of school can't be a crime, can it?"

"I don't know about you, but I couldn't pick that lock. And I'm not keen to climb the fence, either. I am small and fragile."

"We could probably break the lock, but that's definitely a crime. Whether leaving school grounds is itself a crime depends on the specific legal definition of truancy."

She puts her hands in her hoodie pocket and tries not to do anything that'll make the internal screaming worse; it's getting less polite by the minute, and in a few more she won't be able to hear herself think.

"Let's just circle the perimeter and see if we can find a janitor or something."

"Sure."

"I mean, morally speaking it shouldn't be a crime to leave school after they accidentally locked us in. Actually I bet you could argue that somebody here is committing false imprisonment, although you might have trouble pinning them down for it since the person who left us here and the people who locked the doors aren't going to be the same."

"The law isn't concerned with morality."

There are no janitors. There is, however, a gap in the perimeter - someone's already taken some wire cutters to the fence, and now it's possible to move from school grounds to the construction site immediately adjacent to school grounds.

"Oh good! We get to benefit from someone else's crimes!"

"...Yeah, I think this might actually be our best prospect of making contact with the outside world."

Aaaaaaaaaaaa she has to make decisions, she doesn't want to make decisions, someone is going to get crushed under a pile of bricks, probably Merry because everyone likes Merry, and then the rest of them are going to be tried for manslaughter, and they're going to be standing in a courtroom and someone is going to ask her why she didn't do the obvious thing, and she doesn't know what the obvious thing is right now but when she's standing in court it'll seem super mind-numbingly obvious, and it's going to be so obvious that they're going to end up trying her for third-degree murder -

"Possibly."

"What are they even building back there?"

"Oh, they aren't. It was going to be a fancy apartment building and then somebody ran out of money or something and now it's the foundations of a fancy apartment building with dirt piled on top and weeds growing in it."

"I guess that explains why we never see anybody actually constructing."
