"Who even gets into a war they expect to last that long?"

"We're much longer-lived than humans, thinking on those timescales might be more natural for us."

"How much?"

"Elves - and Dwarves, the other peoples we're allied with in this war - don't actually die of aging, though for some the awful conditions of the war takes its toll eventually."

Jim looks around at the awful conditions of the war. They're lovely. "Gotcha."

"We spend a lot of time out in the field."

"Yeah, that did look pretty rough. Is it radioactive out there? I wasn't thinking, I didn't have the demon make me anything for that - can't even summon an angel -'

"Yes, it is, at least in some areas. A couple hours shouldn't pose significant risks, but I'm sorry we didn't get there sooner. Refugees on the ground is one of the Enemy's favorite setups for an ambush, and we've lost a lot of lives responding in the past."

"Demon, what've you got for post-exposure -" She guesses-and-checks her way through another negotiation and gets a pill and takes it.

"A hundred fifty years after nuclear weapons were first used in the war he set off a bunch more of them, we think just to keep the surface uninhabitable."

"...why?"

"It hurts us more than it hurts the Enemy, not being able to live outside. Elves are sensitive to that kind of thing. And his real quarrel isn't with us, it's with the planetary leadership on a different planet, Valinor, so I don't think he cares very much about the state this world will be in if he wins."

"Why isn't he fighting on Valinor then? Why are you guys involved?"

"We think he's not strong enough to beat Valinor yet, or wants to have destroyed the resistance here first. He started here because the societies here were all peaceful and newly industrializing, and no one here could stop him. We're from Valinor - I was born there - and when we heard that he was slaughtering people by the millions here we came as quickly as we could. Everyone else on Valinor is waiting for the fight to come to them, I think, there's a lot of ideological resistance to intervening in foreign conflicts no matter how many innocent people are being murdered."

"But if he's ultimately mad at Valinor that's not very foreign."

"As a member of the faction that obviously decided we were morally obligated to intervene, I'm worried I won't do a good job of summarizing the concerns of those who remained behind. Many of them think he will never really have the strength to bother them, many of them oppose killing even in self-defense, many of them think the war here is unwinnable or that resources spent here protecting refugees could be better spent at home..."

"Huh. Why's he mad at Valinor, anyway?"

"He had a war with them a very long time ago. The one during which he engineered the orcs, actually. He lost. He was imprisoned for three thousand local years afterwards."

"This is all a little overwhelming."

"I can only imagine. I'm sorry, we don't have to discuss it further."

"Do you have a lot of orc refugees around?"

"No, just the ones picked up last night. They have brain chips too, which means they transmit information back to their side, and many of them attack all Elves on sight. It's made the refugee situation exceptionally difficult to handle."

"Oh. What do you usually do?"
