"Balrogs don't get tired?" He leads them out of the hanger bay and down a hallway and down another one; they're all deserted.

"I think they do if you don't let them caffeinate themselves but not like really tired."

The balrog follows them down the hall.

"If he'll be up while you rest, can you let him write things, so we can teach our people your writing system?" he asks carefully as they reach a door.

"I mean, I guess I could, but I don't like the idea much," says Jim. "Demons are nasty beasts and they're very smart, you can't let them have unrestricted communications or they'll steal people's souls and suchlike."

"Ah." He opens the door; the room is an enormous suite with a wall that's all computer screen, glass doors leading to a balcony leading to an underground stadium of some kind, another wall with vines climbing up to fake skylights, and a series of fountains which empty into a large marble bath. "We could have him exclusively communicate with someone who was physically prevented from surrendering their soul."

"Physically prevented?" says Jim. "Wow, this place is super shiny."

"We could have them on another continent and having said-the-way-you-cannot-break that they would not give it their soul. I am glad you like the place. I can have someone bring food."

"I was going to have the demon make me food," says Jim, "dunno if I can eat what you eat. Not sure I know what you're talking about, and anyway the issue isn't that he'd take it right now, I'm the summoner now, he'd just get them in a soul-offering mood for later."

"Ah. He can talk with the person who is in charge of this part of the continent, then, Melkor already has his soul."

"Not sure you're as good at English as you sound," says Jim. (The demon looks concerned.)

"If Melkor gets to a body before the soul is destroyed he takes it, and he makes copies in Angband, millions of them, on computers so they can have experiences faster. I think it might be for information at first, but after for fun. That is why we are having a war."

"That thing you're saying isn't the thing I'm talking about," says Jim.

"Oh. Well, rest well."

"Will do," says Jim, "can you show me how to turn out the lights - demon, I propose that, hm, in exchange for permission to create the English alphabet once in physical medium under paragraph-A constraints, you make me chicken parmigiana and a root beer float -"

The demon nods and hands her her dinner. She learns to turn out the lights. She shoos the demon into the hallway and goes to bed.

The demon creates a set of alphabet blocks and spells out HI, then I AM, then CAM.

Allandur studies this with fascination. "Okay. I don't actually know how to learn an alphabet from someone who can't talk - are things spelled the way they sound?"

They do that for a while. "Okay, I think I can start guessing. Thanks.

Uh.

Are you okay? Are demons, generally, okay?"
