She gets the pen! It is indeed very fancy, nice swirly wood with gold trim.

"Thank you very much!" says the captain. "Here, take this HM as a thank-you present. You can use it to teach your Pokemon to cut down trees."

Aw, sweet! Taptap. "You're welcome!"

Presumably there isn't much of this cruise left. She'll find out which of her Pokemon can learn to cut down trees while she waits to get back to Vermilion City.

Yup, they pull back into the harbor pretty soon. And everyone except Gywa can learn Cut.

Yeah, Magikarp aren't known for having any sort of sharp edges. She will return to her bike and then zoom to the Pokecenter, because it is evening and she has a sleep schedule to maintain.

The sunset is gorgeous and the Pokécenter is right where she left it.

Ooooh. She'll stop to enjoy that for a few minutes, and then continue on to sleep.

Morning! Breakfast! Whaaaat's Vermilion City's Gym like?

Overgrown, for one thing; she needs to cut down a small tree just to get in the door.

Aw, come on.

... Muuushyyyy, you wanna learn Cut? Of course you wanna learn Cut. Come learn Cut.

Mushy can totally learn Cut!

Inside the gym is a grid of little pillars, and a sign saying "Test your brainpower in the Electric Gym! Find the secret switch to face Lieutenant Surge!" Surge is presumably behind the door in the back; a couple of optional warm-up trainers are hanging around drinking bottled water on the side of the room.

Hmmmm, puzzle! Does she feel like puzzle?

... Yes. Time to weave in and around the pillars, trying to get a good look at all of their sides.

Three of the pillars have numbers on them! When she finds the pillar that's five away from the one with a five, and four away from the one with a four, and three away from the one with a three, and presses on it, it goes ding and the door opens!

"Congrats!" Says one of the optional trainers. "Want to fight us anyway even though you didn't need hints?"

Grin, nod, bounce over. She'd better make sure her team's up to handling Electric-types!

There's no type advantage on either side, and she has effectively four Pokémon to these guys' one through three (Gywa still needs to watch more fights and learn from them before she's ready to take the lead in one). She beats all the optional trainers, though she'll need to heal before facing Surge.

Her team is so good and she loves them so much. Off to the Pokecenter, and then back for Surge!

She's not quite ready for Surge, whose team and muscles are both very impressive. She loses. "You've got hustle, kid," says Surge, grinning, "but you have to Train and Fight! I hope to see you back here when you and your team are stronger!"

Aaaar-- no, you know what, that's fair. She will just have to take his excellent advice. You know, after healing her Pokemon and having an early lunch, because tromping around in the tall grass is hungry work for all of them.

Tromp, tromp, fight fight fight! After enough days of this, she should be ready to face Lieutenant Surge again. Fern is a Gloom now, Beedle is a Beedrill, Mushy is a Parasect, and Gywa is a Gyarados!

!!! Gywa is so good and so big and all of them are great but wow, Gyarados are big!!

But still going to get super zapped if Gwen brings her out during the fight, so she'll only come out if the rest of Gwen's team gets too tired. Everybody else, let's get that badge!

They can get that badge! Lieutenant Surge says, "That's the way to do it!" and hands over the sparkly pin.

Yaaaay! Sparkly pin can go with her other pins, to be admired because she has an amazing team who she loves very much.

Neeext.... Route 11.

Route 11! It's a beautiful day to battle random trainers, and battle random Drowzee, and find a coil of rope hung on a bush with a sign saying "up for grabs--lost my rope, bought another, found the first one, ha ha".

Fights! Many fun fights!

Heehee, she had that happen once with a pack of crayons. Her rope now, it'll come in useful at some point.

Aaaand that's as far as she can go; there's a black thing the size of a house blocking the road. Oh, it's got a head on one end, must be a Snorlax.

Aw, come on.

.... She's gonna poke the Snorlax.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
