"They're evil but they're on our side." He picks out a practice bow for him.

"Oh, well, as long as we're all evil."

"Nah, see, it's not like there's the evil team and the good team and you can check if you're evil by checking if your allies are. They're evil, we're - up to us."

"So. How do you use that bow thing?"

He demonstrates that. The other kids trickle in. Marcie Ross has stopped worrying she's sometimes invisible.

Karen helps the advanced students! At a certain point she starts hanging out with Mercy.

"Karen. Have you returned to hunting vampires?"

"Yep. New-and-improved less fatal methods, too."

"That does not sound improved."

"Well, I mean, we're not letting them go or anything. We just think we have a way to stop them without all the murder and stuff."

"Why should you want to? They're a demonic infestation. Enemies of humanity. Fundamentally evil."

"Well, yeah, but - I mean you had that whole infestation thing that one time, and we saved you?"

"Vampires don't have anything in them to save. They're pure evil, and sympathizing with evil will only lead to - evil."

"That is a perspective."

"There is one problem," he says, wandering over, "which is, once you teach yourself not to sympathize with evil, you find it hard to sympathize with anyone on Earth, and you leave for somewhere nicer with no evil, and it seems like that's evil."

"Why should it be, unless you consider yourself to have an obligation to rid this world of evil?"

"Well, ridding this world of evil is pretty hopeless but it seems like fighting it is better than not doing that, more often than not."

"I question whether people can effectively fight what they feel sorry for."

"Do you."

"Perhaps I'm wrong."

She does not sound like she is seriously considering this.

" - so I'm gonna go help Marcie," says Karen, and she does that.

"People sometimes get sad and tired when they're killing sympathetic enemies but they sometimes get bloodthirsty and reckless and - bad at predictions - when they're killing things they hate, it sorta looks like downsides all around to me."

"It makes sense that those are things to watch out for."

"And, you know, if you're running any kind of real operation with a lot of people, you're going to have a lot of each, which is better than all of one or all of the other."

"I suppose you will."
