"I think your power's a little too conspicuous to practice in the park."

"Okay... hmm... maybe a library? I know a couple hereabouts."

"Maybe if you could go from thoroughly altered to normal faster than a librarian could round a corner, but you can't. Yet."

"If we were in a remote corner behind some shelves and I had my back to them, they might not notice..." she suggests tentatively.

"Yeah, until I have you trying to sprout wings. I don't wake up in the morning meaning to be creepy," she says, technically accurately, "but what exactly is wrong with your house?"

"Well, mainly, if you try to kidnap me it'll be a lot easier if we're here than if we're anywhere else," she says, either lacking any kind of tact or not wanting to apply it.

"I'm not going to kidnap you! What good would that even do?"

"I don't know, I'm not a kidnapper. Why do you want to kidnap me, huh? Huh?" She giggles. "No, I guess it's just, safety precautions, since you're a strange adult who appeared out of nowhere with magical powers, and literally all the information we have comes from you. Like, there could be some conspiracy of witches somewhere and you want to steal me away for it—by the way, if there is one I am so in you can just tell me and I'll join."

"Alas, I have no conspiracy to offer, it's just me and people I've visited before whose powers don't grow anymore. Would talking to some of those people help?"

"It certainly wouldn't hurt, as long as you don't kidnap me to do it." She shrugs. "Do you have any suggestions of suitably private places that would make it nevertheless not ridiculously easy for you to kidnap me?"

"I could call them on the phone. But unfortunately the nature of privacy is that mostly people are not supervising it to make kidnappers' lives inconvenient."

"The phone's good, I guess, though not a guarantee. But I guess if you really really wanted to kidnap me you had a pretty good chance with the cat." She shrugs. "Alright, we can keep coming here, I suppose."

"Thank you." Pause. "So, did you know some humans are born with extra fingers?"

"I did!"

"But I'm sure Ms... Addy must be very tired of you occupying her time like that," Laura's voice can be heard before the woman can be seen coming from the kitchen again, with a book in her hand. "Besides, it is a school night. It might be best if you resume experimentation tomorrow."

"Sure. When would it be convenient for me to come back?"

She looks at Sadde then back at Addy and says, "After Sadde has come home from school, at around the same time as today, would be a good time, I suppose. I won't be home until a while later, however."

"Well," says Addy. "I won't let anyone kidnap her."

"Oh good," Laura says, dryly.

Sadde giggles. "Bye, Addy! See you tomorrow!"

"Bye!"

And Addy departs.

She is back punctually the following afternoon.

Sadde is waiting the next afternoon!

"Hi, Addy!" she greets, waving and then gesturing for her to walk inside. She might notice the hand Sadde's doing that with happens to have six fingers.

"Oh, lookit you, you did it!"

"I did it! It wasn't really any harder than growing the nail but it took longer. I was working on it at school, I had my hand inside my pocket and it was weird, I had to first create the skin then start filling it with bone and tendon and it hurt at first but I started doing the nerve thing so it didn't hurt anymore but it was still pretty slow. And now I was trying to untie the tendons of these two fingers and then you arrived and I can’t really move my hand much at the moment.”
