It is, all things considered, a very nice drawing room. Portraits adorn the walls and the heavy drapes are open to let starlight from the moonless night through. There's a table far too small for the large room with a pot of tea, a set of tea cups and an arrangement of cookies and fruit. Two oaken doors are firmly closed to one side, and to the other a single door is slightly ajar, the sound of sobbing coming from past it. Every once in a while it's possible to hear a page being turned in the other room as well. The drawing room on its own is silent, save for the ticking of a grandfather clock and then, with no prelude, an exclamation.
"I don't think I can help you with that unless you want to assign me more dance partners."
"Happy to oblige. Y'know, before I awakened I had a balance disorder, couldn't run without falling down let alone dance."
Nod nod. She should say something given his backlash.
"Is losing clumsiness a normal feature of awakening?"
"Dramatically improved condition in general is. I wasn't sure if it'd cover my balance situation or not till it did, there aren't that many espers that there's data on every possible thing a person could have and awaken with."
"Espers are stronger and faster, have better hearing and eyesight, aren't allergic to anything, we're like more symmetrical and have really nice skin. Sometimes people get a hair or eye color change - I actually got both but they're subtle, my eyes were black and now they're dark blue and my hair iridesces in bright enough sunlight. If somebody had patchy skin color for some reason - I don't know if you'd have ever seen somebody with that - or, like, a lot of freckles, awakening can redistribute that. The cosmetic changes are generally how the newly awakened esper likes it."
"I don't think I look that different in most ways unless I'm standing in the sun and my hair does the thing."
"Symmetrical," he supplies. "Mostly the big change was the balance thing and also the superpowers. I didn't notice my eyes for weeks or my hair for months."
"I've definitely noticed your eyes."
"Because empowered have unusually good vision. Most likely."
"I'm hoping everyone just thinks it's Narnian ethnic variation even though there's no normal human with navy blue eyes, let alone iridescent hair."
"Yes, though I've never seen anyone Japanese and the illustrations I've seen were highly exaggerated, judging by your features."
"Were you looking at illustrations by Westerners or by people from Japan or China or something? The art style also differs."
"One time I saw an old picture of a white man drawn by a Japanese artist, who'd heard that he had 'blue eyes' but wasn't clear on what part of the eye was blue, so he was printed with black irises and blue sclera."
"-that sounds like it must have been quite something. I think the portrait I remember was done of an actual person, just with an added emphasis on their exotic features so as to sell better."
