No, it doesn't reset. Even the templated version needs to be recast every time it triggers. Though this bit over here reminds her of how you can make ""wands"" that are not really wand shaped, look at this quartz magic lamp all you really have to do is insert will at a steady pace and it will be a light that lasts a couple hours, and the engravings down here that are responsible for it work kind of like this she thinks---

Nicole will cook- Well, 'cook' as far as reheating low-prep things counts- Here's some sausages and jerky and pasta and fruit and biscuits on a steel pan over a fire.

She's very nervous.

"...Hey.  Hey.  It's gonna be okay.  Promise you."  ...She's a little bit nervous, but - Nicole's her friend.  She cares about her friends.  And those nerves are not going to stop her from reassuring her friend that this will be okay because if it isn't she will damn well make it so, you hear her, future me?

Hug.

"I'm sure. Just- This isn't as fun as Tamamo seems to think it is. It's... Maybe not as bad as I've built up in my head, but it's like waiting for a vaccine shot."

"...I have generally met vaccinations with a kind of profound equaniminity, except for the being stabbed parts which are annoying, but I think I see where you're going with that.  ...Honestly, I kind of am looking forward to -"

"I am a fundamentally anxious person, and it's going to be nice to have that metaphorical voice shut the fuck up for once, you know?"

"Or an important test, or a job interview, if you like. ...I can kinda see it."

Pet, pet, pet.

"I'll try to channel some of my own Red Dream energy along with you, when you get to it. Not to the point of causing problems, but go with the flow, you know? Hm. I guess... We should maybe talk about advance directives or something like that..." (Slight blush).

"Yeah.  Yeah, we should.  That...  Is really important.  Though I've no idea how that would work for me given that the whole thing is that in the moment I'm not going to be giving a damn.

"But yeah, advance directives.  ...It's awkward, but it would help me figure out what I'm looking for if we could be slightly more specific...

"...I guess - nothing damaging, nothing permanent?  Is the rule."

"I'm going to physically stop you from casting spells that seem too high-power and unstable, if I can in time. If the horny wins I'm pretty sure almost anything you would, uh, do, that's not deeply kinky, would be fine, and that you'd listen to nonverbal cues that I'm not having fun if I stop being okay. You might get bored and want to wander around or head for the nearest village, and I think you'll want me to try to stop you from doing that. But I think you might, actually, end up stronger than me in some ways, or sneakier. I assume you'd want me to actually hurt you if it prevents you from hurting other people? Oh, you might manifest a bonded item- They're weird, and possibly divine in origin. Occasionally people turn up with them but kitsunes turn up with them at a much higher rate. I have a bonded toolkit, if you've seen me use it sometimes, and it lives in a sort of hammerspace, an inventory that only one thing can go into? Uh..."

"Yeah I would endorse hurting me to stop me from hurting others but honestly just put me on a leash and I'll be a good girl.  Ahem.  ...Ooh bonded items sound cool."

Okay skip over the leash thing...

"They are. Here, look, toolkit. Pretty much whatever I need is magically in reach when I go for it- Oh, seam on this shirt is getting a little loose so-" Boom, needle and thread. "I fixed the lantern with it, I tried making a steam engine with it, and so on..."

"Damn that's neat.  ...Hey wait a minute could you ask it for a meterstick or something?"

...She folds up the leather satchel, waits a moment, and unfolds it again to reveal a collection of levels, rulers, tape measures, calipers, a compass, and what looks to be the top part of a theodolite.

"...I don't know if we should trust them..."

"I think we could at least crosscheck them with eachother, if you can do weights.  Given that the density of water is approximately 1, so if we do a cube we can check whether the grams are equivalent to the cubic centimeters.  But that sure does look right.

"...Can it do magic tools?  Or powered ones?"

"No, nothing it produces is innately magic, by itself. I've tried that before. It doesn't do high technology well either- I can get an oil lantern, but not an LED flashlight."

"Damn, though I don't think that that intrinsically rules out asking for uncharged spell circles..."

She rolls up the toolkit and opens it- Engraving tools, brushes, and compasses. Template-making tools.

Try again... Focus on crafting things with magic, perhaps that metal-melding cantrip...

...She gets a metal template with the right holes in it, complete with the relevant runes. But no charged magic chalk.

"I managed to get the template for a spell I already know by focusing on the idea that I was going to use that spell to make something. But I would still need charged chalk or ink to actually write the circle. Or I could freehand cast it," which they both know is something like five times as tricky, "This is a simple welding spell and I'm good enough at that by now."

"...Right.  ...Have you ever tried asking for reference books?"

"I have. No books, sadly. It seems to be a somewhat narrow definition of hand tools."

"Ah.  ...how the heck do slide rules work..."

"Let me know if you figure that out!"

...She yawns.

"Looks like I do still need sleep."

"...I should probably also try to do that.  Even though I really don't expect I'll succeed."

...What could she spend her time doing hyperfixationally if she can't --

Witchcraft?  She had already been thinking about that.

"Read my books and notes if you want. But I really should rest up so I'm fresher when it happens."

"Yeah, you sleep well."

What even makes sense as a casting metaphor, anyway...

(And thusly either she will sleep, or the Dream will overtake her.)

It happens during predawn twilight.

The experience is hard to describe but- It's sort of like the 'it seemed like a good idea at the time' machine is running at 300% capacity. And lots of things seem like good ideas.

That rising tone finally reaches a crescendo and blooms, giving her a humanoid form and a rush of joyous energy. She could run. She could SCREAM AS LOUD AS POSSIBLE. She could dance. She could wake Nicole up and kiss her. She could cast spells. She could rub her hands on the cave stone to feel the nice texture. She could steal more food from Nicole's pack. She could touch herself. She could summon her items. She could brush her tail (which is wagging excitedly without much conscious input right now). She could put on some of those clothes they packed. She could untie the knots on Nicole's packs and bags and tent, as a prank. She could go splash in the stream outside. She could HUNT a RABBIT.

She could do anything. But she certainly could not do nothing.

Well this sure is a rollercoaster on steroids.  Items.  Possibly also clothes but mehhhh.  Wait, no, frostbite hurts.  Darn.  Clothes it is.  What a shame.  Hands though!  Hands are great!

Hands feel reaaaaally nice when they touch things! Maybe she should touch lots of things.
