Haru sometimes gets coffee at Tim's, when he happens to feel like it on a random morning, or when he needs to be up long enough to finish out a guiding session with June. This morning it's the first thing.
"- led astray?" he suggests, coming in for a landing on his doorstep and setting her on her feet.
"...yeah. Lead astray." She'll hop back on her feet, keeping in as much skin contact with him as she can.
Inside, unshirted, snuggles? She can read to him, now, if he wants that.
Unshirted! Snuggles! "You wanted to know about natural categories in esper powers, right?"
"Oh, yes! Thank you for remembering, it'd slipped my mind with the flying." She cups her ear with a hand, smiling at him.
"So people talk about espers as having categories like 'sensor', 'mobility', 'combat', 'healer'. Healers are a real thing. There is a genuine grouping among espers with powers useful for healing that isn't just 'has powers which are useful for, and therefore used for, healing'. But not every esper who works in a hospital is a member of that group! The trend, named after a guy named Breisacher, is that a quote-unquote true healer will have the true intuition that their powers are to help, not harm, and will have a quite rigid limitation to that effect. But people also find work as healers if they're, say, psychics who can work as anesthetists, or there was a guy who controlled blood and did a lot of very neat medical research."
"huh. Do a lot of monsters have blood? Did he do anything besides hospital work?" She nestles herself against his skin, drinking in the contact.
"He did not dungeoneer. A fair few monsters have blood, though, lots of them are at least pretending to run on biology. Sensors are sort of a real thing. There's not a unifying secondary feature of the human-identified group like there is for healers, but there are plenty of powers that just deliver information to the esper who has the power. But like healers there are members of the human category who don't have a power that's exactly like that. I, for instance, sometimes operate in a sensor role."
"Ah, with your normal hum- normal superhuman eyes and ears and free reign to explore unimpeded? How expensive is that backlashwise, usually?" snuuuggle. She's vaguely considering making a case for making out, but probably it's too soon? She doesn't want to wait a week to kiss him if she can help it, but...
"In dungeons that are hazardous only because of monsters and not because of lava or something, I can walk right past them taking photos, yeah. It's pretty cheap for me as long as I don't also have to fly to get around."
"Neat! What percentage of your deployments are like that?" Maybe after dinner! or when she zeroes him out after second flight...
"Maybe one in five? I'm pretty all-purpose, so I'm seldom worth teleporting outside the Toronto area and can usually be put on some dungeon that is bothering Toronto whenever I want one; if that happens to be when a dungeon that a selfie stick suggests is not full of lava appears, I'll case the joint, but if it's not, I'll go shoot giant newts and carry victims out."
She nods. "Local superhero Traceless!"
...okay, actually, what's his backlash level feel like through the skin contact?
It's not something she can tell directly; she can gauge her own backlash level, though she doesn't yet have a lot of practice at this, and tell if his is climbing (during the flight) or dropping (since then, and at times during when he was coasting), and if in the process it's getting closer to or farther away from her own (it was very close toward the end of the flight but has been pulling farther since; he's dropping a little faster than her).
"Yeah, I love being a superhero, it's very ego-syntonic."
"It suits you well!" okay, fuck it, this is too distracting. "...can I try and convince you of something, or would that be rude at your current backlash level?"
"You can try to convince me of something! My backlash is just as happy for me to argue against you interminably as to agree as long as you don't, like, make blatant emotional manipulation attempts."
"Okay! so the thing I want to convince you is that I am basically competent to consent to makeouts. And that I really want to kiss you. I mean. if you're interested." She stays pressed against him and tries to keep eye contact, but she's blushing kind of a lot.
"- oh. Well. I mean I have any reservations about this happening for the first time while you're backlashed but - I guess that's kind of... not... the way your backlash points...? Unless you're, like, picking up on some kind of signal off me, which, like, I'm trying not to be weird about it but I'm not an actor."
Oh!! Her face splits open into a big grin. "Oh! No, no need to worry about that - you actually were doing great on not-signaling-interest front, I've been attempting to lightly flirt with you all day and could not for the life of me tell if you were picking up on it and being... your usual careful self... or if I was just firing below your personal flirt-detection threshold?"
She's blushing pretty hard still, but she continues on. "And - yeah, the core of my argument is that my backlash is about... reducing my agency, my ability to notice the things I want, my ability to act on my own desires and not those of others. And despite no signals of interest from you, I have been wanting to make out with you for a while now, and it was getting distracting enough that I figured I would rather ask than risk seeming like I wasn't enjoying talking with you?"
"...mostly flew beneath my notice, I may not be amazing at detecting flirting, but - okay, I'm convinced."
She props herself up with an arm behind his head and moves her lips in towards his, slowly, carefully.
He lets her be the one to close the distance, the first time, in spite of having been convinced, but then he will quite actively participate in kissing her.
Oh good. She's also a very active participant, shifting her weight into him, running her hands along his back, opening her mouth -
Fun fact! Open-mouthed kissing is a very high bandwidth guiding activity! He pulls her close and hums happily.
Oh. oh wow. It feels amazing, almost overwhelming. She melts into him, moaning softly when she pauses to take a shaky breath before going back for more
