"What, because you asked nicely and promised to tell him a secret if he behaved himself?"

"Because why would it be in his interest to change up his plans just because I told him I had new information - which, by the way, is not the first time I've said that - and that I thought he'd want to hear about it once I knew more. I didn't say I was leaving Haven, or hint at it."

"You don't think he can guess?"

"Gah," Jisa says quietly. She holds the Gate, because it seems like adding in her own yelling to the mix is not going to help at all, but seriously

:Maurabel?:

:Yes?:

:I'm, er, not sure what to do about it, but my f– my Uncle Van seems to be having a fight with the King about whether or not he can come, I'm going to try to hold the Gate until they decide, I guess...:

Also they're saying all sorts of things about the Problem that she doesn't think they would normally let slip in front of her, so she's just...not going to draw attention to the fact that she's standing here listening...

:Should I come over there?:

:Ummmmm I'm not sure what you can do either but maybe?:

:I can run to the edge of the city and bring you here faster: Enara suggests, Mindspeaking to both Jisa and Maurabel.

:Okay. No great loss if I can't help. I'll meet you where the trees start:

:Coming: And Enara gallops off.

Vanyel and King Randale are still glaring at each other.

"You can't know for sure that he won't betray us," Randi says harshly.

Shrug. "I guess we can't ever be sure of anything. Seems to me the chances of him surprise-attacking Haven on any given day, when he hasn't for almost twenty years, are pretty damned low. And I can learn the Gate from Jisa, and figure out how to get the communication spell to work from there, and I'll stay in touch."

Randi finally flings up both his hands. "For the sake of all the gods, Van, I think you must be the most stubborn man in the goddamned world. Since my daughter is standing there holding a Gate looking ready to drop, fine, you can go with the others."

Vanyel nods, his expression level. "Thank you, Randi."

He holds the King's eyes for another ten seconds or so, then turns and ducks through the Gate, Yfandes on his heels, followed by a couple of newly-graduated Heralds who she doesn't know well.

Vanyel gives Jisa an apologetic smile. "Sorry about that."

She is so confused. It's hard to think when she's dizzy from the power-drain. "Can I take it down."

"Yes, go ahead." Vanyel's voice is absent.

She does and then sits down on her bottom.

Enara meets Maurabel at the closet point to the university that she could manage to reach under tree cover. :They resolved their fight, sounds like, Van's come across with a couple other Heralds, a Fetcher and a Farseer. Still seems like a good idea for you to come introduce yourself:

:Thanks for the lift: She hauls herself aboard. :Can you warn all the newcomers not to read my mind if they might not know that for sure?:

:- Yes, of course, though really, every Herald gets the lessons on Gift-ethics hammered into them and most are better listeners than Jisa: Fond exasperation.

:I mean, she had accidentally killed two people so I can understand wanting to tread carefully, I would just prefer different sorts of care:

:Fair enough: Enara kneels so she can mount more easily, and carries her back at a trot. It's not hard to stay on; her gait is very smooth.
