HEY BACKCHANNEL PLEASE HELP.

He is apologizing for not knowing how her powers work because he did not take time to read her pamphlet fully in the middle of studying for his test.

Okay! That does make sense, but there were a lot of other possible interpretations.

"It's fine. I'm just glad you read enough to know to call on me when you needed it."

Nod nod. "Thank you."

"You're welcome. What did you want from the supply cabinet?"

"Uh. Pencils. Or pens would've done. - do you need anything?"

She pulls several handfuls of pens and pencils out of various pockets. Not all of the pens are spooky and eye-covered, even. "Not right this minute, I do have a thing to get back to, but at some point I'd like to be walked through a relatively beginner artifice project."

"Oh, I'm - not an artificer but I did get a ticket to the Baby's First Knife lesson at the nearest enclave."

Hey Backchannel could you possibly elaborate on baby's first knife, and if there's any significance to visiting an enclave separate from belonging to one.

Baby's First Knife is a lost wax casting knife-making project that students almost invariably do first in shop, learning basic make-and-mend incantations in the process, and is so standard that it is now common to have thirteen-year-olds do the same thing in advance so they'll be in good shape to replicate it in school. Not every indie wizard household has a workshop but enclaves do and some will let nearby families send their soon-to-be-admitted teenagers to attend the class.

"That sounds helpful, yes. I've never actually artificed anything before, and," she takes out a copy of the pamphlet and shows him Anything You Can Do, "I learn better with someone to show me."

"Yeah. Sure. If you don't have anybody better to do the knife with you."

Well, she's not ruthlessly optimizing every little thing. But she's not going to say that.

"What's your name? I didn't ask, earlier."

"Ken...?"

"...Ken Santisteban."

"I'd rather not assume you're the only Ken in the whole school."

"I think I actually am but I guess I don't know for sure if there's a Japanese one?"

"Okay. Anglophone Ken."

Nod nod. "Uh, I have shop third period on Tuesdays."

"I'll remember that." And then she is going to leave, sprinting back down to where she left the non-freshman artificers as soon as she's out of sight of Ken's doorway.

(Lightfoot handles the sound of her footsteps, when she wants it to, he's not going to hear her.)

Ken's gonna... close his door and lie down for a while as the potion does its work.

The artificers in the shop are still hard at work, though they've had somebody standing guard instead of working on his magic sword since she left.

"Sorry about that!"

"I assume it was urgent!"

"Mhm. Someone invoked Great Responsibility."
