"I got her out. I saw her get out. Both of them."

“Oh. Yes. I knew to look for you because I’m friends with your daughter. She’s wonderful.”

There's a pause, a squelch, a twitch in the unblinking eyes like Arjun is taking a minute even with the diamond's help to come up with his next remark, but he says eventually: "Just like her mother."

“I’m given to understand there are stylistic differences. And she looks more like you. …I would have brought the mirror to her first, before I called you, if I knew you wouldn’t start out just screaming. I’m very impressed by that.”

"Whatever you're doing isn't... screamy. Not sure I could, if I tried."

“Oh. I didn’t know exactly how this was going to come out. I’m glad, I think.”

"Yes." Pause. The eyes are not shown with lids, so they don't have much range of expression, but they - glance down a few degrees, as though tired, perhaps? - and then he says: "What did Gwen call her."

“She says that naming her ‘Galadriel’ is the worst thing Gwen ever did. She goes by El.”

"...that was on the shortlist if it was a girl. What's wrong with it?"

“…It’s…unusual, in Britain. Like, the kind of unusual that has other kids making fun of you in primary school.”

Meanwhile, Karee’s external body is bolting up the stairs faster than is probably wise. She’s prevented from skidding, smacking into something, and falling over when she reaches the library landing only by the grace of Lightfoot.

She’s somewhat more circumspect when she actually enters the library, but she still darts into the stacks at maximum reasonable speed, hissing “El! El!” in a soft but carrying tone.

The school is kind to her: there's El's carrel after less than half a mile!

"What?"

“We finished. It worked. He’s talking.”

"What's he saying?"

“He wanted to know your name. He said to tell his grandmother that he won, because you and your mum got out. Do you want to talk to him?”

"- what has his grandmother to do with anything - I -"

"How old is she, how long has it been -"

“I don’t know what his grandmother has to do with it.”

”She’s a junior in the Scholomance right now.”

"I guess there's the business where his side of the family wanted to have me murdered."

"A junior. And Gwen's all right?"

“Sorry, what?”

“She’s a famous healer, and she makes really good mana storage”

"Mum tracked them down eventually and a grandmother, maybe the same one, made a prophecy about me and Mum had to whisk me away before anyone got too far along in trying to prevent it."

"Good. That's good. I didn't remember - to give her my number, or address -"

“—If you aren’t ready to talk to him, or just don’t want to, then I won’t pressure you. But I think it would mean a lot to him.”

"I just don't know what I'd say. Maybe we'll just stare at each other. Can he see?"

“I’m pretty sure! I haven’t specifically asked.”

“You can see out of the mirror, right?”
