Yup, it totally is a scanner! And her brain is telling her that she completely and deeply understands how it works, even though... if she tries to think about it she can't actually come up with any details.

... It'd be great if playing along with the insanity that is this simulation didn't result in changes to her brain that are just false. That's upsetting.

Anyway, whatever, she still ~made a thing~, so she is going to go gleefully scan some things. Plants in the lab first, she absolutely wants to scan other sims, but she thinks it's very important to get good habits about how and when to use the weird magic science things on her coworkers sooner rather than later.

...

Ah. Hm. That was the obvious result of getting the metadata, wasn't it. Information that she has absolutely no idea how to translate.

So clearly her scanner needs an upgrade of some kind, to put the... that... into terms she can understand. She might need to learn programming for that. Or at least get more practice with making stuff.

She does go around scanning anything and everything first, though. Maybe there's some metadata here that's intelligible. (Plus, she made a thing! She is letting herself have that victory even if the confines of this simulation keep ruining that a little.)

Unfortunately it all looks like that. She can get the name and the type (entity_tree, entity_furniture, entity_electronics, entity_sim, etc) but all other information is obscured in the unintelligible sea of random characters.

Yeah. About what she expected. Confirmation that she was right about being in a simulation is nice, though. Kind of. In that she doesn't feel crazy.

"Hey, what are the requirements for getting promoted?" she asks one of her coworkers, once she's had her fill of looking at unintelligible characters.

"...doing well at your job? Having good ideas?" they try, unsure.

"Oh. Okay, thank you." So, nebulous promotion criteria, just do your best. Less structured than she'd like, but workable.

Next thing to ask:

"Has drinking things made from the chemical synthesis table killed or permanently debilitated anyone?"

"It can be very dangerous to drink untested chemicals."

Thaaaat is not a very reassuring statement in this context. Also not what she asked. Sigh.

"Do you know of any of the effects drinking untested chemicals?"

"Well you'd need to test them to know."

"I sure would."

It would be unethical to use her coworkers as test subjects. It is not their fault that they are missing some very important logic and reason circuits. It is her duty to the people they might wake up to be to not mistreat or use them as they are now.

She'll just have to get the scanner set up so she can get around this problem, by scanning the untested chemicals and having the simulation tell her what they do.

She expects she needs more practice with making stuff, or possibly with programming, to manage that, so, now that she knows the secret of turning her brain off - hey, can she go make that perpetual motion machine?

Yup!

"Good job," says the robot, dryly. "Took you long enough."

"It was a stupid idea, so I didn't feel all that motivated to bring it to reality," says Yvette, sugary-sweet. Pity that she can't have the robot test the strange chemical substances. Or, maybe not, ethical dilemmas don't become simple just because one member is an asshole.

"Your motivational problems are yours alone. I don't care."

"Then kindly stop the color commentary when it's not requested~"

That's most of her workday done; she makes another one of those meal replacer serums and downs it before it's time to go home. Do her efforts earn her a promotion today?

Yup! She is now a Junior Tinkerer, making §39 an hour.

Excellent. She's not actually sure if getting promoted will make it easier for her to crack the secrets of how to immortalize herself and turn everyone around her into proper people, but it vaguely feels like she'll have more resources and ability to aim the mad science in the direction she wants as she gets higher in the Science career track. Yes, that is the phrasing her mind uses, no, it doesn't make much more sense to her, either.

It's also nice to have extra money to throw around, just in case. And the feeling of achieving something really does ground her and make her feel more in control of her life, when: hahahaha she's a simulation at the mercy of whoever is in charge of the processors, and there's no guarantee anyone's even noticed she's woken up.

But instead of having that existential crisis, she'll just head home and see if her house has been changed.

It has acquired one lonely extra window, approximately where she wanted it.

It can be directed!!!!

She will spend a while cooing over what a nice and beautiful and well placed window it is, so as not to hurt the house's feelings. She's not really sure if it has feelings or not, but if it does, she's definitely not hurting them. What a good house that put a window in the exact correct spot.

It doesn't immediately acknowledge the cooing, at least, if that's evidence of anything.

It's not, but there's also no compelling reason not to give it a try. She gives a wall a friendly pat, requests another bookshelf ("Up against this wall, right here, please," she specifies, patting the wall behind the couch) and then heads out for her now routine jog.

Hopefully by the time she gets back she has another bookshelf!

Nnnnope. Seems like the cooing was not enough to make it less modification-shy, at least for now. But she does have a new rug now! It's the same one it had originally suggested.

You know what, that's fair. She will coo over the rug as well, it is a pretty solid rug choice, even if it's pretty small and kind of the wrong color. She'll pitch the same rug but a different color tomorrow, clearly she has to go slow with changes to this house.

She then starts looking up ways to cheat death on her phone, because: she does actually think the most likely life extension option is the science based serum creation, she just... can't really safely test any of them. Only drinking the ones that don't look like poison is clearly better than nothing, but is a liiiiittle too risky for her taste when she's not driven by spite and the desire to do a good job at work. So: insurance policies would be great, actually.
