Samson grumbles, but he stops, he didn't want to play with the stupid stick anyway.

"Well," Esdras says, "would you mind answering my question?"

She sighs and shrugs. "Yeah, that's about right."

"...No hobbies?"

"Oh, I'm talking about a less momentary kind of boredom. Hobbies are fine but within my parents' bubble I couldn't do anything meaningful, so I left."

Nod. "Do you have any plans for... meaningful things to do?"

"Not yet, no. But Oran seemed like the kind of person meaningful things happened around so I decided to stick around and see what happened."

Nod. "How long have you two known each other?"

"Oh, a few weeks."

"How did you meet? If you don't mind my asking."

"Well, one of the most interesting things one can do is go on an expedition, and Oran's good at those."

Nod. "I must say that talking to him while he was organizing this was rather reassuring."

After this long contemplating nature (and getting bored by it), Samson finally asks something about Rafa. "So, what is your power like?"

Rather than explaining she demonstrates by drawing some sand in the area and making it fly around her in pretty patterns, grinning.

"Huh, how do you use that in a fight?"

"Put sand inside eyes and make them explode," she suggests.

Well here's someone who can't decide if that's disgusting or wonderful.

Yeah, second that.

Samson stands still for a moment. "That... is kinda disgusting."

She shrugs. "You asked."

"You could just throw the sand in the eyes and be done with it," Samson says.

"Oh, please do grievously mutilate monsters," Esdras says from over where he is, "I can stand being nauseated but alive."

"I wasn't thinking this was a playground scuffle when you mentioned a fight, I was imagining a monster," she agrees.

"Yeah," Samson says after a moment, "I was talking about monsters and you have to fight them to kill because they don't feel pain."

"They feel nothing but pain," Esdras corrects again, "so much that any given injury adds very little to them."

"How do you know that?"

"There was a culture that called monsters 'incarnated pain' and I was curious why. Every single case where someone tried getting a read, the result was always the same: monsters are in constant pain. Which is also consistent with how they don't appear to care about wounds and often ignore mental effects. The pain is just way too strong for them to care about being too wounded to survive or having their emotions controlled and what have you."

"...wow. That's. Kinda awful."

"Oh, absolutely," Esdras says earnestly. "For a while people thought it was some kind of natural defense, but it's just another thing wrong about their bodies."

"Well, what did you expect?" Samson asks, "Voragera made them, everything about them is wrong."

"How about we change the subject?"
