Okay excellent time to fix - well, not everything, but some of the everything!

Modify Memory.

So, Modify Memory is a tricky spell - memories are fluid, hazy things. This is an art, more than a science, a trick of what seems like it would fit and what makes sense, and carefully changing everything to fit the new reality. Linzi is actually really good at this kind of use of it, even if it makes her feel complicated feelings sometimes. (Look, it's just a hard spell to use ethically, is the thing, even when one's a member of a very extremely Good party.)

Dealing with flashbacks is more straightforward.

She finds the root memory, the one of - blowing Ridaya to pieces, yikes - and gets to squishing it. That did not happen. There was no horrible realization of what she would have to do, and the pain of then doing it. None. But Umakhi is a very smart person, so just blotting out the memory entirely would be jarring, and probably a bit upsetting in itself, so - it can make sense by having Ridaya already be dead. Her body peacefully composed, not even looked at by Umakhi herself in the rush of blowing the lich up. Which is a perfectly nice thing to replace the memory with, actually, just hook that back in to her muscle memory of throwing bombs - and they can all be aimed at the demilich who did this. Because fuck that guy, actually.

Then, that done, she starts carefully backing up, erasing all of the flashbacks, too. Squish, squish, squish. What flashbacks? No flashbacks. Those can just go.

This whole thing involves Linzi sitting quietly for several minutes, until -

"- done," she says, tying the last of the spell together. She - has the urge to explain her reasoning for why she did it this way, because she always has that urge, but - actually? This is not about her. How does Umakhi feel about it, and what does Zan say?

Oh. Oh

She pokes at it with her mind, almost compulsively, and she knows what should go in the hole but it's not there and that feels weird but she's not - constantly seeing it happen - this is so much less awful  "Thank you," she gasps out, and leans against Zan, breathing heavily.

"You're so welcome," says Linzi, brightly and sincerely. Yessssss she did a good thing yessssssss.

"- Um, let me know if there's anything else in this vein I can help with? I'm really very happy to."

Zan hugs Linzi, since Uma isn't going to, and someone definitely should. "Thank you so much," she whispers, too quietly for Uma to hear. "I was so worried about her."

Hug!

Though um, a hug between a human woman and a halfling woman is, uhm, slightly fraught, but at least now she can confirm she did not drool! This is really not the time to be a disaster lesbian, thanks!!!!! She would like that to turn off for a while!!!!!

"Really happy to help," she repeats, at a slightly higher pitch.

D'awww. She's not going to tease Linzi for it now, not after she's just done them such a huge favor (besides, there'll be plenty of time for that later~). She pats the bard's hair instead, humming happily.

Umahki steadies herself, and finishes processing Linzi's comment. "...If you could be ready to cast it again, when we get Ridaya back? Being undead is... very painful." She looks troubled.

... okay being pet is very nice and also very good for quieting her anxieties, hooray~

Then: words! Words, she can words!

"Oh! Oh, yes, of course, absolutely."

"Thank you," she whispers again, and then she's leaning against Zan's side, reading a book that Linzi didn't see her retrieve. (And, for the first time since Linzi met her, there's a smile on her face.)

Petpetpet. (Zan could tell how soothing she was finding that.)

She'll wake up Luto at some point, but not yet. She always does better with extra sleep after a stressful day, and yesterday was horrible for her.

Oh, back to pets.

Okay~

D'awww. She's really cute.

This can continue for some time, with the sound of Uma's page-turning in the background. (Either that's a small book, or she reads unreasonably fast.)

Linzi does eventually shift a little, and gets out a book of her own. She's writing in hers, though, and it's a good thing Sivi made her that quill of endless ink! She's not writing anything important, just her observations about Highhelm and her thoughts on it so far.

But this is - nice, actually. Writing, and snuggling, and being pet.

Awww. (Ridaya and Vakt not being here hurts, hurts bad enough that she's keeping it packed away in a box and has been since yesterday, but... this is still really nice. And they'll get them back. Soon, soon it will be okay.)

Eventually, Luto yawns and stretches, accidentally pushing her long arms into Linzi's side.

This earns a little giggle of surprise, but doesn't cause any writing related accidents.

"Good morning!" she says brightly, to Luto.

"G'mornin'." Luto yawns again, brain still turning on.

wait, that was Linzi's voice, did she just...

She blushes. "Sorry!"

"It's fine! I've actually got a lot of practice not messing up my writing, this honestly doesn't hold a candle to trying to write while riding in a wagon. Not to mention it's much nicer."

... Brain catches up to what she's saying. And where she is. "....... oh um! I hope it was okay that I slept here?? I don't think I snore, but I don't think I know for sure..."

"You don't!" Zan says brightly. "And we all appreciated the company." (Uma mostly because it was good for her to have a background stream of words to fall asleep to, but that counts.)

petpet to stave off bardish anxiety?

Yep that works great, shuts the anxiety right up. Pets are nice~

"Oh, good," she mumbles, leaning in to the pets.

(Luto gives Zan a Look. Zan raises an eyebrow at her. Luto blushes.)
