Dana is around! She's organizing movement of the pews to make more open space. She waves back.

Khalida will move over to where Dana is and flop into a chair that hopefully won't need to be moved immediately.  "Hi again!  I went to the public library, it's so so cool!  It closes soooo early though.  But the librarian showed me an encyclopedia and a book about mechanisms and a biology textbook- and a physics textbook but I didn't have time to get to that one."

"-I'm glad you had fun." Dana seems kind of stressed. "It sounds like you didn't have much chance of going to school where you were before, if all that is new and exciting?"

"No- I mean yeah- I mean, I didn't go to school school, my stepmom taught us, but that's not-"  She gets stuck on her words briefly and has to take a long breath and marshal her sentences, scrubbing a hand across her face.  "What I mean is we didn't have the things, back home.  Or the printing press, we had to copy everything out by magic."  (She says this last in the exact same tone one might use for 'by hand'.)

Living in a third world country is one thing and she already sort of suspected that, but...

"By... Magic? I wonder if you learned that word wrong."

"I guess it is kinda weird that you have the word for it but not the thing- uh, like miracles, but people can do them just by themselves in their heads, without a god needing to give it to them?  Mine does still work here, I did check- I don't have the copying one today though."

"Hon, as far as I've ever seen or heard of, magic is not something that people can reliably do, and miracles are only possible through the grace of God, and He doesn't do so many of those nowadays by all accounts. Now, I'm open to being proven wrong if you want to demonstrate."

That might be the best way to get this mistake sorted out.

"Oh, uh, sure?  Prestidigitation-"  her scarf is green now.

"-That's... Huh. Huh."

Pause. Could it be stage magic of some kind? A hidden tab being pulled that changes the weave or swaps out the scarf?

"May I hold the scarf and have you do it again? To... Purple. If I understand this right."

"Yeah, that one's-" and the words freeze on the way out of her mouth.  Because this language doesn't seem to have a word for 'cantrip' even though it has one for 'spell', and also her brain has caught up to her mouth and there's strange men here (although they're not paying a ton of attention) and also she is introducing arcane magic writ large to an entirely new planet and should probably have thought about how to do that at all beforehand.

Breathe.  Until further notice she is here for a reason.  Breathe.  Assemble the sentence before starting it.

After a moment or so, she stops looking quite so much like a deer in headlights and ventures, "I, um, there's guys around- would my coat work?  Or, um, one of the bench pamphlets?"

"-Oh, of course, you don't need to undress. It's even better if it's something you can't possibly have prepared, anyway."

She opens her purse and pulls out a handkerchief. "How about this?"

"Sure, thanks.  Prestidigitation."  It is enpurpled.  (It's the same nonsense word and hand gesture as before, if Dana is paying that much attention.)  "That one lasts like an hour, it'll turn back to white after."

"Now this is really weird, I could've sworn magic isn't real, that it's all tricks and stage shenanigans. Sleight of hand. I'm not sure what to make of this, I admit."

"Oh, I mean, it takes years to learn enough to be actually useful, somebody had to be first but it's totally possible nobody here's happened to get there yet, especially if you've only got the one god and He's stingy with miracles- um."  She adds in the direction of the cross, "sorry, no offense."

"But- It is teachable? This is a thing you could go to school for? Do experiments on, perhaps? That anyone could learn if they just do it right? I don't know about miracles- There's free will, of course, and that the age of dire need is long past, but mostly God operates with fate and coincidences, I think- Anyway. You could go for the Randi prize! He's put out a million dollars as a reward for anyone who manages to perform real magic, things that we can't explain with current science, I mean. And I think remote color changes probably count. Even if you are doing some kind of crazy con with aerosol dyes or something..."

Half a dozen questions collide in Khalida's head and she has to take a moment to put 'wait so this planet still has prophecy' and 'a million dollars is a lot, right' and 'what's an aerosol' aside for later, but she nods enthusiastically while she's putting her sentences together.  "Yeah exactly!  I've actually been thinking about starting a school- I had a tutor, but there's a country back home that sends everyone they think can handle it to magic school- oh, I should say actually, it's not literally anyone who can learn it?  You have to be, like, smart enough to do the math in your head, but it's just math, you don't have to have a magic ancestor or anything like that."

"This is amazing and were it any other time I'd have so many ideas for how to show it off--" Dana bites her lip. "Maybe we should get you out of state, if this magic is - I mean - where did you come from, I was assuming it was Egypt or Iran or something but if actual magic is on the table that's probably wrong?"

"Oh!  Right, sorry- I didn't- I told the priest but-"  aaaaaugh Aroden didn't have a Stupid Talking Problem-  breathe-

"He said 'Earth is the only planet God has given us', so I didn't know if it was rude?  And I wasn't sure I wasn't just on the other side of mine, not until after I'd been in the library, I don't know a ton about the other continents?  But I'm really pretty sure now- if anybody on Golarion had airplanes I would've at least heard about them- um.  Sorry.  That's my planet, is Golarion."

"I don't think he thought you were really magic. In the sense of being able to learn techniques that you can do by waving your hands and saying words, not using complicated machines, and are repeatable, and are not just praying for miracles. If we're wrong about magic not existing, what else might we be wrong about, no other planets than Earth being habitable?" Dana shakes her head.

Shrug.  "I don't know anyone who's been to another planet- and, uh, I still don't know how I got here- but back home they say the stars are other suns, and some of them have worlds around them, and there was a-" it is really not surprising that a language spoken somewhere without arcane magic wouldn't have a word for 'archmage', but it throws her for a moment anyway- "um, a, a really powerful and clever wizard figured out how to travel to them?"

"Well... I don't know where to go next on that. Maybe we should get you out of here... If there's only one wizard, that's an irreplaceable opportunity. The thing is though, we've been preparing all day and the gossip about the epidemic just keeps getting worse."

"Yeah.  It seems- bad."  She is, maybe, going to be a total coward and not say anything about how she killed a guy in the woods, because turning that into words she can get out to this kind woman in this peaceful church is maybe literally actually impossible.

"I have a book, it's not really a textbook but it should help, I've been going to copy it out as soon as I can find enough paper, and then I can get started on translating in case I die before I can teach people-"

"Oh!  Wait sorry, I totally didn't say earlier, I'm also a priestess not just a wizard?  Only a tiny bit of one, I can't do miracles, but I have faith healing- and I can do clean water but you have indoor plumbing for that- I was going to do one this evening- wait should I maybe do it out in the parking lot?  The priest said Jesus Christ wouldn't mind but if he didn't believe I had real magic maybe he also didn't believe I have faith healing?"

"Miss Khalida. Please explain what you mean by faith healing in simple sentences? This now seems very important, and it would be bad for us to talk past each other."

"Um, the thing where-"  a priest heals people, which is going to tell her literally nothing the word doesn't-  "um, okay, so you know how when you get a bunch of injured people together, and a priest stands in the middle and reaches out to their god, and the god sends, um, holiness out through them into the real world, and the injuries get fixed?"

Really the more standard case of divine healing would be a spontaneous Cure, but she can't do those so it's not like she can offer it-

"Oh shit, sorry- I can't cure diseases, not till I'm a lot stronger and maybe not for years, it only works on, like, physical damage.  I didn't mean to get your hopes up."
