Then they will keep at this and play cards in between at least until someone comes to tell them to stop.

Playing cards is permissible, though there isn't actually a table in the hall so they will be sitting on the floor to do it.

They can catch bits of incoming reports, when a shift change makes it so the report taker is a different lieutenant who prefers to stand in a different place. Mostly there's nothing, sometimes there were footprints and they investigated and there was nothing, one party reports a group of three stunned dretches they took out with no incident.

Well, Fia promised a full day, so if no one comes to break them up for a 'sleep' shift that seems fine for now.  As long as people occasionally pass by with full bellies.  (Sometimes they will want to break for five minutes for whatever passes for a bathroom here but it would be surprising if that weren't fine?)  They can also copy unstiffness so the lack of table is not that inconvenient.

The outgoing patrols are usually recently fed. Nobody comments on the bathroom breaks if they time them responsibly.

A full day is long enough that some people encounter them twice, by the end of that period, and are notably cheery about their presence, having put together that these guys are why they get Endures even for patrols in the daytime when the wind isn't ridiculously awful! This takes the form of fairly subtle facial expressions and also someone trying out some kind of stupid nicknames but with an attitude that they'd be better nicknames if he could think of any.

What nicknames specifically??

There is a slant rhyme available in Chelish between "wand" and "million" but it makes a stupid nickname whichever order you put the words in! "Slot" and "prince" alliterate but this is immediately identified as a dirty joke and shot down by the guy's squadmate!

That's charming!  He's tempted to point out how 'warm' and 'magnanimous' sound like they have a root in common, but he's not sure of it and maybe it would be tacky for him to suggest anything.

Surely at some point someone will show up to relieve one of them?

Grec himself is going out on a patrol toward the end. "I've got my squad. You've been at it a day, that's at least your coats and such bought," he says. "If you need anything while I'm out, the Commander's in and I've caught him up on your deal."

"...Have we already gotten everyone who'll be going out while we're off?"

"Not literally everyone, there'll be somebody doing a double from two away and such. Most of them."

It would be good to know whether there's a convenient way to let unEndured people know that they can flag one of them down, and also Aten would like to know how to obtain their coats and such, and for that matter what 'such' is (the food and room, probably?  But if there was something else he wouldn't know about it).  But it seems like Grec's on his way out and after yesterday it's probably better to keep unobtrusive.

Unless he went out some side door Bartra should still be in the building?  Is he hanging out in some findable place.

Bartra has an office, though he has to share it with some other wizards! Before they find it Caldentey delivers them their coats, though.

With their names embroidered and everything?

No, that would make them look like they were Chelish enlisted.

Aha.  Well, they're warm if the two of them end up in a situation where they need that.

Oh hey a room with Bartra's name next to it.  Knock knock?

He happens to be in! So is another wizard, reading a book. And Torus the owl is there too. "What is it?"

"We wanted to note our appreciation for you causing us to have the Endure spell and check whether there was something we could do to make clear our gratefulness.  We didn't initially know that copying spells would be a delicate matter."

"...huh. I mean, you can buy spells, usually. If you stay on long enough it'll come out even between getting more of my slots to myself and getting the spell on even in survivable weather."

This is conciliatory enough for a Chelish person that the other wizard looks up from her book, a bit taken aback, but she doesn't say anything.

"Grec said he would make sure there wouldn't be a problem but we also wanted to make sure of that."  Shrug - wow he is also maybe worse at shrugging than Fia, he feels like that looked unnatural.  (Fia can't tell from the inside how it looked.)  "And if we make worse mistakes in the future it would be nice to have established a record showing we're not working in bad faith and will make good on this sort of thing."

"Well, you know, stay in the bounds of the treaty and the Commander'll see you're safe for it, he's very big on that."

Huh.  Nod.  "Well, we're putting the Endures on everyone, so if something comes up for you in particular, let us know."

(Feradi is Also Here, not contradicting any of this.)

"Are you looking for a third for your game or was that all?"

"If you're free.  I think I've figured out almost everything for two players but he's really aggressively not been giving me all-but-rhombuses and odd two-hearts to test things against.  It's not urgent."

"I'm free, yeah."
