"Hmmmm. I guess it's probably not that important. Probably just having the best library in the world is good enough. But I'm going to make sure the redesigned mushroom god magic system has allowances to invent the things I want later."

"Of course," says Raivethrani. "May we all be capable of inventing whatever magic we may desire."

"I'd better memorize everything really carefully so I can tell Wilbur. We're going to have a real advantage at magic stuff because we know how it was built, and he's gonna love inventing magic stuff so much."

She smiles, and tries not to let it turn faintly quizzical as she puzzles over why Lucy said those things, and only half succeeds.

"So before the question of libraries arose, where were we?"

"Technology level?"

"Yes," says Tabitha. "It sounds like you might want either Faux Medieval, so Raivethrani can keep up with the wordlbuilding as well as possible, or something later but before Contemporary to avoid the issue of information-age technological disruptions?"

"I will admit I feel more comfortable building a society whose foundations I understand better... and the earlier we set our story in that society's history, the more plausible it is that discoveries in magic like the ones you plan to make are waiting just around the corner."

"I don't know all that much about Medieval even when it isn't Faux, is there any non-information-related technology that I might be expecting to have around and wouldn't?"

"Many of the ordinary conveniences of your era like clean running water and ubiquitous cheap lighting are usually implemented by magic in Faux Medieval settings with magic," says Tabitha. "That's the 'pleasant and convenient' part. Is there anything specific you're thinking of and want to ask about? Or would you like to take some time to think about it now, or move on to the next section and think about it more later?"

She thinks about technology she, personally, has experienced.

"Will there be...pipe organs?"

"Certainly, if you want them."

"What is a pipe organ?"

She makes the pipe organ noise she made earlier to demonstrate her vocal range. "Those. They're a musical instrument."

"In that case I too would like there to be pipe organs."

(Tabitha scribbles down a quick note to this effect.)
