For the last few weeks, Hyacinth has been having... dreams. They're scattered and fractured, only remarkable for their unusual vividity and the fact that in all of them she has her actual body - purple hair, fox ears, the whole nine yards.
She dreamt of fighting - in a war with guns, and in a forest with a sword. She dreamt of exploring; hallucinatory landscapes like someone's grand art project, an enormous illuminated book with paper trees, guiding a personal island through the sky. She dreamt of going to school, except everyone was a girl and there were shadowy things in the background.
Today has been an exhausting day. She hasn't gone outside the house for months. It feels like every day her world gets smaller and smaller, as she loses activities and misses opportunities. She gets her groceries delivered and spends all her time on the internet.
She lays down in bed, and closes her eyes.
