"Yeah, me either."

"If it helps, it's a real physical place in the material plane."

"But does it have an exit."

"It does if you are good enough at portals magic."

"I'm curious if we can rank up or if we're stuck at the rank 0 witchy stuff."

"My guess would be that ranks don't form hard limits to you the way they do to us but we'll find out."

"Would you recommend any specific starting experiment?"

"Um...hm. Maybe a high-level divination?"

"Sounds lovely! Book me?"

"I'd be expecting Bella's affinity to be helping her with this except I could cast Sending too."

"Do we actually have any books on high-rank divinations yet."

"Well...not rank five, not yet, but..."

"I have books on high-level divinations!" Lisao says brightly, and vanishes briefly into her room and comes out hefting a very thick textbook.

"Why do you have that, I know for a fact that you are divinations rank one at the moment."

"Because I am an enormous nerd, keep up," she says lightly.

High level divinations! What've they got?

The book is incredibly jargon-dense and most of it assumes that the high-rank divination spells you are casting are leveled-up versions of lower-rank spells you are already familiar with, but there is one entirely new spell, Masking, which blocks or alters the information area-of-affect divinations can glean from the area around the caster. Several chunks of moving parts are highlit as being "like so-and-so in thus and such book in reverse" for reader convenience, but the highlighted areas are fully written out in and of themselves in case you aren't familiar with the thing in question.

Well. She likes the sound of this spell but she doesn't know how to do witch spells in other books backwards so she needs to pick it up the long way. She will puzzle over it for a while anyway. "Lot of documentation," she remarks. "I guess maybe this is what you mean about the self-driving car?"

"I think so? All that documentation is necessary, for me. Or, like, some of it is a little extraneous, but--not by a lot."

"Many wizards spells can be cast with just the incantation and a couple pointers along the lines of 'point at thing' or 'only works if you're startled'."

"But they're still hard to learn?"

"Sometimes the incantations are long. Sometimes very long. And sometimes mana handling or holding on to intent are tricky, even if they don't outright make it impossible for a given wizard to cast. And also if you say the incantation incorrectly that is bad. But sure, lots of spells can in principle be learned in five minutes if they're just a limerick and you have a good memory, those just don't tend to be the fancy ones."

"Fair enough. I wonder if there are any spells that are also mundane poems, that would get confusing."

"There are! Poems or songs. But generally one won't cast them by accident."

"I wonder if anything in the Chuci is a spell. That'd be funny."
