Erika knows the route to school pretty well. She walks it every day, after all. She could do it almost in her sleep, which means it's a good opportunity to get lost in her own thoughts for a while. Something new and unexpected she needs to pay attention to almost never shows up.
"And it was a bit of a childhood dream to represent Earth during a first contact..."
Ail and An let them into the apartment – they look human right now, though their eyes are oddly shaped. Sailor Makai is waiting in the living room, transformed fully. She's sitting calmly on the main couch, and she rises to greet them when they enter.
Sailor U is leaning against the wall opposite the couch, arms crossed. She looks over when the door opens, but she doesn't move.
She nods, seriously. "To preface this... Makai is a small, remote world. I am the only Sailor Guardian in that star system; I awoke when my world experienced its first flush of life, and I oversaw my people's rise. They never saw a reason to join the wider galaxy, and the wider galaxy scorned me as a weak, minor Guardian, and... I was content with that. For all those years, there was nothing of interest on my planet, and so we stayed neutral in any wars. We were rarely even seen as worth demanding tribute from. When a new imperial power arose, I was expecting much the same; even if they reached us, we'd surrender immediately, and at worst we'd have to pay taxes."
"But the Shadow Galactica was... I couldn't surrender to them. Sailor Galaxia razed entire star systems and slaughtered every Sailor Guardian who didn't join her army. She would often destroy the planets of even those Guardians who did surrender; I heard a rumor that this was to force them to be dependent solely on her for their power. And so, for the first time in history, Makai joined an alliance of star systems, to defend ourselves and our neighbors against the Shadow Galactica. Dozens of Sailor Guardians took the field – all of them weak like me, the last dregs of the galaxy, but there's never been battles that big, not before this war – but Sailor Galaxia and her forces slaughtered us. I realized partway through that she was stealing Sailor Crystals, and I used the last of my energy to send out a warning to the other Guardians, both on that battlefield and echoing throughout the galaxy – I collapsed, and my people retreated back to Makai with me. We had some breathing room, then, but... Sailor Galaxia pursued us. I tried to lead her away, but she still destroyed my planet – I pulled on reserves I hadn't realized I had, to form a barrier around as many of my people as I could. My body dissolved with the effort, and Ail and An say that my Sailor Crystal went dark. Sailor Galaxia must have thought me fully dead, or perhaps she couldn't find a single inert gem as my people scattered."
"They traveled the galaxy after, trying to find a way to restore me to life, but found only a dying galaxy. My people dwindled over time, too, and... Ail and An, who were barely out of infancy when Makai fell, are all I have left."
"She is – but I don't know if she knows you're here." She shakes her head. "Four Sailor Guardians... That's a lot, and that many wouldn't have awoken just in the time since my death – but this entire section of the galaxy... It's empty. There's no Sailor Guardians, of course, but... Makai isn't that far from here. I always knew I was on the edge of inhabited space. I should've known if there was a planet with complex life out here – I checked Ail and An's computer, and this world isn't even in their database as somewhere our telescopes detected an oxygenated atmosphere for, which is impossible. They stumbled on this world on accident."
"The only reasonable explanation is that you're being actively hidden, but that'd require an insane amount of power."
"The Kingdom of this solar system. It fell three thousand years ago – we were isolationist, sure, we were an island in the galaxy and we liked it that way, but we were attacked several times, and we did interact with our neighbors ever."
"How do you not remember? How do you not know?!"
"How did you have a kingdom with so many Sailors and only one inhabited planet, anyways?" Ail asks.
