Hi, my name is Jayce. Professional hero, I guess. If you need advice on a problem, I've been told I'm not bad at giving it.

... And I've gotta admit I'm curious about what people from other universes have as problems in their day to day lives.

What's caught in my web? It has four legs and squishes when poked like a lizard, but it's brown and fuzzy more like a spider. Also it's really loud.

Not sure if this is a "problem" in that it's not time-sensitive, but it is important: What are the optimal ways to grow algae (or possibly some other, more efficient nutrition source), given some combination of a fairly steady electrical supply and limited and unreliable amounts of solar energy? Currently the standard seems to be a setup with a bunch of red and some blue LEDs.

Enthusiastic Seeker of Novelty, that sounds like it could be a mouse? I don't know. How big is your web? How big is the brown fuzzy four-legged thing?

I'm good at advice too!! I can help people!

(But algae and bugs are things I would usually ask someone else about and I can't ask her right now. Sorry!)

I know the chair complaint wasn't in the advice thread, but Faith, do you have printer access? If so, there's a resize-able chair design on the Free Objects Library that I can post a copy of, if the file conversion works well enough. Otherwise, if you have a chair, you could try to saw an even length off of each leg. Be sure to leave the legs with flat ends, or your chair will be unstable.

Sometimes there are specific chairs I want to sit in! And I don't want to CARRY A CHAIR AROUND all the time! And I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO! And even if I did that THE TABLE WOULD STILL BE TOO TALL!!!

A footstool would be easier to carry around with a chair, and then you could have something to put your feet on and the table wouldn't be even taller for you? This isn't a perfect solution, I know. Also, then other people would feel awkward if you carried a stool around all the time, and maybe that would make them want to solve the problem more.

My web is across a cave tunnel. This creature is several feet long.

What are chairs?

If I KNEW how to solve the problem then MAKING OTHER PEOPLE WANT TO SOLVE IT would not be a problem. But I don't know how to solve it except PUT NEW CHAIRS EVERYWHERE and that will take FOREVER and there are OTHER THINGS they need to do.

Maybe I can make someone carry around a stool FOR me, though. That would not FIX the problem but it might HELP.

Faith, do you have an aesthetic preference towards being short or do you simply lack the ability to replace your body with one better suited to the environment?

...is that a thing where you're from because it's not where I am.

When I'm bothering to wear a body at all I tend towards flexible ones with no specific height yes.

Hey all, me again! (I apologize for all the questions.) As per issue #178 (and I guess maybe #45?), continuities currently aren't paginated properly if they have subsections. I'm not sure how to go about implementing a fix – ones without sections paginate fine.

Options include:

  • Collapse the sections to just the headings when there are more than X (4?) sections
  • When more than X (10?) sections are in a continuity, page them with Y (… 10?) sections per page (has issues if some sections have a lot of posts)
  • When more than X (25?) posts are on a page, split it to a new page (has issues where sections may be split across pages, would probably be aesthetically dispreferable)
  • Implement an approach like the above, but ensure sections get kept together – that is, a page has at least 25 posts on it, a page has at least one whole section on it, and otherwise it has the least number of sections & posts that satisfy this (potentially causes unbalanced pages)

Sadly this wasn't implemented at the time sections were (we just special cased sectioned continuities to display all the sections, grouped together) and most of the options seem like they'd be annoying to implement behind the scenes. (Option 1 would probably be simplest? Maybe we could do expandos for the sections.)

Opinions?

Edit: typo

Oh, forgot to respond earlier (apologies for the double post but some people are probably subscribed to this, might like a ping):

The first thing has actually already been suggested in issue #144! We will try to get to it timely (and you may find it was fixed all along or you may find it appears without any notice in a few weeks and then gets announced a week later), but ordering things properly is hard and so, like, if you want predictability… maybe make this clear so we can ensure stuff is done in the right order?

(Ha! I do make myself chuckle. :P)

(Edit: no, seriously, we would like to know what order you want things in – we don't get much feedback on this.)

User , you seem to have made a post consisting entirely of memetic/magical hazards, which was filtered. (If you wish to see what the filtration looks like, the image below should be filtered.)

This may be a deliberate attempt to protest a forum policy, or something, but the complete lack of accessible content in your message means that nobody can understand it.

… I accidentally posted this to the wrong forum. It was meant to be (he says, embarrassedly) to a roleplay thing.

Oops? Anyway, carry on.

Do you have any advice on solving gods, because my sister's in a stalemate with some, it's indefinitely stable but there doesn't seem to be a way of solving it besides "get squished" and "squish them" and the former is obviously unacceptable and the latter is a) currently outside her capability set and b) a lot of people would be unhappy with us probably forever if we did that, I mean more than they already are and with better reason.

Sorry, deities are a little out of my comfort zone.

1) Get better capabilities.

2) Squish gods.

3) ????

4) Profit!

If step one were straightforward we wouldn't be having this conversation.

I mean I'm not totally sure if we have any gods in my world so I am not super an expert (except maybe I kinda am???) anyway have you tried explosions?

There were some explosions when my sister was fleeing the Sacred Forest with her filled Soul Crystal but that was more of a distraction, gods aren't reliant on physical forms such that blowing them up would do more than piss them off.

Araisha: I am not sure if your god situation is at all like mine, given the difference in what souls do.

My solution is mostly to find areas that they don't care about (namely: "basically everywhere besides Earth, if you keep the lights down"), and do stuff there.  Also to be useful to transhumanity so that they will buy me medical supplies and tungsten rods and such for me to, er, distribute.

Most of the deities around here are limited primarily by attentional capacity and bickering, so if you could form some big conspiracy that would potentially be useful, they'd have trouble keeping track.

If you have outright matter creation that is also mostly limited by not attracting attention, I can tell you about what I did before I attracted too much attention, but I'd need to trust you more, and it might not work anyway.

The fuck is that.

Anyway the problem with our deities is that they want all Elves under their control; they didn't care about the desert we fled to until we went there.

She can do matter creation but attracting attention isn't her primary bottleneck on doing that, and also I have no idea what a tungsten rod is so I'm not sure how useful relevant advice would even be.
