So there's a sense in which some conversations come "before" or "after" others, right, that's why it's valuable for me to come up with power and drawback ideas, is so other people can use them "later." The idea is something that lets the Spirit give me a drawback that doesn't exist now, when someone else comes up with it later, if I would definitely want it if I knew about it.

Oh!

That would be a drawback. And it wouldn't be one that could appear in the list, because... offering someone that option is a scary thing to do. The Spirit wants people to be able to trust that they definitely get the options they choose and not the options they don't.

It is possible, though, if you want it.

I want it. I trust the Spirit.

Name: Informed Consent - Grants: +16
(Requires Live The Role)
Your list of powers and drawbacks is open to adjustment based on narrative considerations and your long-term preferences. Your memory of this drawback may be hidden from you in order to increase the narrative impact of adjustments, or for other reasons.

Ah. Hmm. I’m not saying absolutely not, but that is a bit more open-ended than what I had in mind.

I do see what you mean, but... Informed Consent is, itself, a drawback. And if you took a drawback that invited the Spirit to grant you more drawbacks in situations where it's clear you would want them, then you might get Informed Consent one day, in a situation where it was clear you'd want it. (Questions of which powers and drawbacks are invented "later" or "earlier" are sort of complicated and would be hard to use as criteria.)

Well, that’s fair, but my criteria for “later” mostly have to do with them not being available to me to choose. Informed Consent is right there, so it doesn’t qualify. There’s a reason I wasn’t sure the thing I wanted would be a drawback.

I guess the question is, do you want to be sure you won't get the full effect of Informed Consent, even if it turns out someday that you want to? If so, then I should come up with something more limited.

I…I’m not sure. I’ll have to think about it. It’s a big decision.

I understand. Take your time!

She mulls it over for a couple of days, and then she comes back and says,

So there are a lot of drawbacks that are sort of characteristic of someone going in a lot harder on the Sexy Helplessness thing than I am, and I feel like this might be the kind of thing that somebody who takes those takes? If that makes any sense?

Hmm... I think I see what you're saying but I'm not sure. To me, what Informed Consent represents is... someone who trusts the Spirit to change their powers in ways they would agree with and not ways they wouldn't.

...Well. It does call itself Informed Consent, and not Sexy Nonconsent.

I think someone could pick Informed Consent for a lot of reasons, and you're right that one of them is feeling happy about putting their fate in someone else's hands, but I think it's also true that the Spirit can do a lot more to help someone who takes Informed Consent than someone who doesn't. I could imagine someone taking it, for example, if they had a power they wanted to try but they weren't sure if they would be okay with having it in the long term, and wanted the Spirit to be able to take it back if it didn't work out.

...Yeah, okay, you've sold me.

Also that is kind of a lot of points to play with.
