His parents got brainwashed by a cult who used dark magic to bind a rage demon into him. They tried to make him a Dark Messiah. His teenage rebellion was to reform and try to do something good. Later discovered that he was also bound to an angel, who helped him discover his purpose, which apparently was to convince a god not to try and take over the world.
