Description

Though worlds of wanwood leafmeal lie;
And yet you will weep and know why.

- "Spring and Fall", Gerard Manley Hopkins

In Elysium, you don’t have to do a job you hate. That is a very fundamental part of what makes Elysium wonderful. You do not have to do the job you hate; you will not starve of it, you will not be beaten, you will not even be shamed and mocked. You can simply choose to do something else, because all of your time is yours.

Of course, you can also choose to do the job you hate.

Some people enjoy being trial lawyers, and others manage not to hate it. Nievendrasiel is not one of those people. They hate the Boneyard, hate the judges, hate the abject helplessness when the verdict is handed down. They remember those that they saw damned, and their own inadequate arguments. Then there is the next case to prepare, with the feeling of drowning in words, so much ink spilled on matters that seem utterly irrelevant to the question of whether someone ought to be tortured for eternity.

Yet deaths, trials, and damnations are always happening, whether or not they look at them. The choice to continue doing this work is the only way to have any say in the outcome.

Once upon a time, Nievendrasiel died, and they received a trial. Now they can choose, each day, to do the job they hate. This is their great fortune.
