And he learns some of the Orc language, quite eagerly, and then grimaces. We're just going to have to make contact with everyone and hope they trust me, there's nowhere to put them...

Do you need my help with that...? I guess there's no local reason to expect fire and mind powers to be connected so demonstrations are dicey.

People will think you're a Maia. They might obey you for that reason, but it's not ideal.

Not really, they'll have expectations of me that won't hold up if they think that.

The Maiar are spectacularly unreliable. But I agree it's not a good solution.

Even if you don't know the people around here your guess will be better than mine what will go over reasonably well.

I'll ask Maitimo, he says as if that resolved it.

I'm not sure I've met him.

She hasn't. Maitimo's been unobtrusively avoiding her.

I'll tell him to come.

Okay. Does this revision seem to be holding up okay, should I go replicate it on the others?

I think so, yes.

Deep breath. Okay.

Off she goes to each other orc and she repeats the process.

Their reactions vary, a lot, but when another Elf comes over, giving Kiri a wide berth, they don't glare at him.

She does not close the distance with the Elf, that would be rude and unjustified by conditions of warfare. This is all of them? she asks Fëanáro.

We can go get more, should we? Maitimo, it's only five feet.

Maybe give it more than that if I'm not sitting down, she says, because of my balance. I'm not running down any scarce resources other than time and, I suppose, unimproved orcs, repeating this.

We don't want there to be more than we can handle if it somehow slips, he says. I can have a few more caught, though.

You know your capacity, she agrees.

The new arrival smiles at her. Hello. Maitimo. I have on occasion sworn to keep people's secrets so I'm going to stay  over here, but I want to reassure you and the orcs that we'll talk to everyone who needs to know and see that they are safe.

It is absolutely reasonable to avoid going near me even if only by default, Kiri says emphatically. Thank you.

It must be difficult, though, he says, avoiding everyone as carefully as needed to be responsible, and I commend the effort and world ordinarily desire to lessen it.

I have practice. And Aleko helps.

Him I've met! I like him! You're lucky to have him!

I am. Best twin. He copes way better than I would with having a mindreading sibling, hands down.

Anyway, the orcs are as safe as politicking can make them, and I know how limited a reassurance that is.
