The cables block it -- fuck, she didn't expect it to be right there --

Is there any high ground she can get to? A roof, maybe?

Up and to the right, but she'll have to clear the demon to get there.

She's a magical girl. She has complete control of a body that can be re-shaped to her will. She jumps.

The demon reaches but fails to grasp her.

She vaults onto the roof and sets up and each of the two seconds she spends doing it feel like an eternity. She aims and fires.

It drops, and the projectors giving it its appearance flicker out, leaving a robotic shell. The "buildings" begin to retract back into the floor.

She's not sure whether she should be hiding from any additional minions. Are they gone too?

"Hey Ellie! Was I supposed to be able to one-shot it?"

"If you were able to engineer a situation in which you could effectively bring your primary weapon to bear in an environment mildly hostile to that task, that would not be an unexpected outcome."

"... you can make the simulations as powerful as you want, right? Are they based on the power levels of real demons or am I going against weak ones for practice?"

"It was typical of one you might encounter, though you would seldom see one at that level alone."

"... I'm going to be really screwed if there are too many, aren't I. Maybe I should practice firing it from short range too. I wouldn't hurt myself doing that."

"Yes, that can be arranged." More terminal typing, and walls once again slide up from the floor. This time they form a shooting range with three tiers of targets: close, midrange, and far.

"Fast!"

This time she stays on her feet and forgoes the gun's mount. She fires at the close range target several times, as quickly as she can, and ... well, she hits it, but she was aiming for the center of mass and clips the shoulder instead.

She frowns, tries again while giving herself the half-second it takes to aim, and fires true. "Rate of fire's going to be a problem."

"It's a different sort of information gathering than hacking a database."

"Yeah. Feels kind of like muscle memory, like it's expecting me to go at a specific pace depending on how far I am from the target."

"Why?"

"You mentioned that fighting instincts come with the magic? It's like that."

"Instincts are well and good, but don't let them limit you."

"Practice makes perfect!"

"Continue, then."

Mid range and long range! Aim is easier if she's mounted, closer to the ground, or closer to the target. For long-range she averages a round every two seconds, for short range she goes down to a half-second per.

"So you can fire faster over shorter distances."

"Takes less time for the targeting program to work, I think. But it's not fast enough to matter unless I really practice. Half a second is a long time." Instincts feeding her information, so handy.
