"I guess if your leaders don't die they can stay in charge indefinitely. Are they good at adapting to changing times?'

"They have rather been the cause of times changing, for the most part."

"I wish I had a better handle of what they want. Versus what most magical girls want. I get the impression that there's a lot of desire to -- stay comfortable."

"How do you mean?"

"Setting people up with cushy jobs, keeping the masquerade up. That's not to say they don't also do charitable things. Just that people might prefer to stay safe and not take risks even if they might be helpful."

"There are factions which advocate the MSY take a more active role in the world. But a significant disruption to the masquerade would have far-reaching and certainly unintended consequences, and many say that it is better to prioritize resources to those already in the know."

"Does the faction that wants to take a more active role in the world also advocate for a reduced masquerade? I could imagine them wanting the former without the latter."

"Usually not in so many words. That is one of the very few things the Incubators have offered their opinion on. They say widespread knowledge of magic will decrease average expected potential and reduce efficiency."

"Why am I not surprised that those cat-things are in favor of keeping more secrets."

"Because you've met one."

Sigh.

"I want to be positioned so that I can help MSY share its resources with as many people as possible. Sustainably, obviously, but ..." she frowns. "There's too much inequality. People are angry. And it's only going to get worse. If there -- if there are more products we could make and disseminate, that help more people, that bring people out of poverty ..."

"You almost certainly want a political track, then."

"I'm. Uh. Bad at politics. Does the research branch have no way to influence how their inventions are used?"

"Fewer, and less effective."

Frown. "What about Soul Guard?"

"In general, you would be following directives, not giving them."

"Not my preference, yeah."

"But if you distinguish yourself in such service, it may be that you would be afforded more opportunities to talk with important politicians than you would otherwise have."

"Do you think it might be faster than trying to make it up through politics?"

"If you approach politics with the mindset that you are "bad at politics", you will not succeed. In that case, alternative methods will certainly be better."

"I mean, I could learn how. It would just take a while. They'll probably want me doing stuff related to my power, anyway, and unless there's crossover between data management and politics ..."

"A significant portion of the back-end work is keeping track of who owes what favors, voting habits, relationships, and so forth."

"I suppose I could do that ..."

"If that sounds like secretarial duties, that's because that is what it would be. Choosing to pursue that path would likely begin with you managing someone else's appointments while you build your own network and contacts."

Nod. "What path do you think you're going to take?"
